January and bills are mailed out in the spring, so property owners “will not be allowed to deduct the prepayment on their federal tax returns [for 2017],” the federal tax agency said.

Arlington Chamber Aims to Preserve Victory on Towing SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Having successfully manhandled the county government last year on the issue of towing regulation, the Arlington Chamber of GENERAL Commerce is ASSEMBLY working to ensure there is no backtracking on the issue in 2018.

The Chamber’s legislative policy positions call on the General Assembly to oppose any efforts that would impede property owners from “safely managing the parking on their property.”

“In a community such as Arlington, where space is at a premium, responsible parking management is a vital component of private-property rights,” the business organization notes in its policy positions.

In 2017, the Chamber went to Richmond to secure the overturning of a measure adopted in late 2016 by the County Board, which would have mandated a “second signature” beyond the required blanket authority given by property owners to tow vehicles that are improperly parked on their property.

The towing industry and Arlington Chamber went to Richmond and won General Assembly approval of a bill that not only neutered the County Board’s

changes, but further restricted the ability of Arlington and other Northern Virginia localities from regulating towing. Gov. McAuliffe signed the legislation into law.

As a result, Arlington board members later in 2017 were required to rewrite rules not only addressing trespass-towing regulations, but also composition of the county’s Trespass Towing Advisory Board, which includes representation from the police department, towing industry and one member of the public.

Prior to the tangling between the County Board and Chamber of Commerce, the citizen member had always chaired the local towing panel; under the changes approved in Richmond, the chairmanship now rotates among the body’s members.

(Arlington also found itself prohibited from appointing non-voting members to the panel, which County Board members had been doing in recent years.)

Being brought to heel by the General Assembly was a reminder to County Board members that Virginia still very much operates under the constitutional interpretation of U.S. District Court Judge John Forrest Dillon, who more than a century ago – in a case having nothing to do with Virginia – opined that local governments have no inherent powers, only those that are conferred on them by their respective state governments.

Students Get Tips from Real-World Legislators

“It’s an amazing idea – a very cool way of addressing the gun-violence epidemic,”

Lopez said.

Stamos, who has participated in the forum each of the four years it has occurred, provided some real-life guidance, telling students that the focus of any legislation should be the common good that would be achieved.

“Be very careful of the person who begins a conversation with, ‘There ought to be a law . . .’” Stamos said, quoting one of her law professors.

Stamos is a big booster of the young people taking part in the Model General Assembly effort.

“It’s always great to see such great young minds and such enthusiasm,” she said.

Hope (D-47th) advised students to be respectful of different points of view from those across the commonwealth. “You just have to be prepared for those cultural clashes that are going to come up,” he said.

(Hope’s group was proposing bills ranging from decriminalization of marijuana and campaign-finance reform to a requirement requiring rabies vaccines for pet ferrets.)

Each year, approximately 450 students from across Virginia travel to Richmond for the three-day Model General Assembly session, taking on roles that include elected officials, lobbyists and media. The program, sponsored by YMCA, takes place in the actual legislative chambers used by members of the General Assembly.

Statewide, more than 50,000 Virginia students have participated since the program began in 1948, including some who have ended up in elected office themselves.

Arlington began taking part in Virginia’s Model General Assembly in 2009, when six students from the Arlington Career Center traveled to Richmond. The 2017 contingent of more than 70 students was the largest ever from the county.

“Each class gets better and better and more thoughtful,” Hope said.

1971 constitutional revision, and have been a staple of legislative sessions since, but have never gained traction – in part because of squabbling between the legislative and executive branches on what the former would get in return for providing the latter with more power.

Ebbin was among legislators to introduce a similar measure in 2016; his bill was killed on an 8-6 vote in the Senate

Committee on Privileges and Elections.

Were it to win passage, the measure still would face procedural hurdles: As a constitutional amendment, it would have to be passed in a second session of the legislature (no earlier than 2020) and then win support of voters in a referendum.

Of the 36 men who have occupied the Governor’s Mansion since Reconstruction, only one – Mills Godwin – has

served more than a single four-year term.

Godwin was elected in 1965 as a Democrat, could not run for re-election in 1969, but won a second term (this one as a Republican) in 1973.

Ebbin’s measure would limit any individual to two terms as governor, but would allow a governor to serve a total 10 years if he or she filled less than two years of a predecessor’s term of office.

The 62 Arlington high-school students who will head to Richmond in March for participation in the 2018 Model General Assembly program got a head start Dec. 8, as they sat down with real-world legislators and picked up suggestions on how to build alliances in the state capital.

“We are taking 21 bills – our goal is to be ‘Richmond-ready,’” said Josué Rocha, a ninth-grader at H-B Woodlawn Secondary School, as he and other students gathered at Central Library for a session with state Sen. Barbara Favola; Dels. Patrick Hope, Rip Sullivan and Alfonso Lopez; and Commonwealth’s Attorney Theo Stamos.

It was the fourth year that the Arlington branch of the YMCA sponsored the pre-session gathering with elected officials, designed to provide the students with real-world feedback and advice.

“I was enormously impressed,” Sullivan (D-48th) said of the students and legislation they proposed. Sullivan and other lawmakers will convene in Richmond Jan. 10 for what is expected to be a 60-day session, then will turn the facilities over to students for the three-day Model General Assembly gathering.

This being Arlington, most of the proposed legislation came from a progressive-leaning slant, whether it be making Virginia a “sanctuary state” or enacting a tax on carbon-dioxide emissions.

(Among the more unusual proposals: Retaining Virginia’s death penalty but substituting a firing squad for lethal injection.)

Like Sullivan, the other elected officials came away dazzled by the students’ preparation.

“We had a lively discussion. It was a great group, very pragmatic. I think their bills will fare very well,” said Favola (D31st), who worked with students whose bills ranged from mental-health training for teachers to raising the maximum

If it passes – which seems possible, albeit unlikely – the bill would allow localities to set alternative minimum wages beginning July 1, 2019, with the wage being increased annually based on changes in the federal government’s Consumer Price Index.

Local legislators have tried related efforts in the past. Among them: In 2015, state Sen. Barbara Favola (D-31st) introduced legislation allowing localities to mandate a higher wage than the state minimum, but only after approval by a jurisdiction’s voters in a referendum.

In 1933, the New Deal’s National Industrial Recovery Act set the first national minimum wage of 25 cents per hour, but the measure was ruled unconstitutionalFinancing by the U.S. Supreme available Court two years later. In 1938, Del. Mark Levine the Fair Labor (D-45th) Standards Act set a minimum wage of 25 cents; its constitutionality was upheld by the Supreme Court three years later.

The national minimum wage of $7.25 per hour has been in effect since 2009; states (and in some states, localities) are able to set their own rates higher than the national one. A majority of states have rates higher than the national average; six states and the District of Columbia have rates higher than $10 per hour, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Ironically, the first wage law of its kind – promulgated by England’s King Edward III in 1349 – set a maximum, rather than minimum, wage for many in the country’s working class. (It wasn’t entirely repealed by the British Parliament until the 1700s.)

Highs & Lows THUMBS UP: To the careers of Jay Fisette on the County Board and James Lander on the School Board, each of which came to an end Dec. 31.

Fisette wrapped up five terms totaling two decades, giving him the longest tenure in County Board history excepting the 24-year run of Ellen Bozman.

In that time, for the most part by our reckoning, Fisette proved a sober, realistic local leader with a relatively conservative (by local standards, at least) fiscal outlook.

Perhaps the most wrenching period in Fisette’s political life came in late 2014, when he and fellow board member Mary Hynes switched sides and effectively killed the Columbia Pike streetcar project. That decision came after voters, clearly upset with the profligate spending of the Demo-

cratic-dominated County Board, twice that year rejected Democrats at the local ballot box.

(Had the Democrats on the County Board not dawdled in the years leading up to 2014, and had they – as we suggested back then – put the matter to a public vote early on, the streetcar would have won public backing and likely would be operational right now.

But the delay allowed opposition to germinate, and the resultant anger over gold-plated spending also doomed the Artisphere and required a downscaling of the Long Bridge Park aquatics center.)

Fisette was a leader on a host of issues, and was a credible representative of Arlington’s views on regional, state and even national affairs. And he served as chairman during a number of momentous events, from the 9/11 attacks to

the federal government’s BRAC process, which significantly impacted commercial real estate in the community.

For his efforts over 20 years, Fisette deserves the community’s thanks.

Lander, who has wrapped up two School Board terms totaling eight years, always seemed to have both supporters and detractors. (But then again, what School Board member, anywhere, has been universally loved?)

We think Lander deserves credit for his focus on student achievement across all racial, ethnic and economic boundaries, and also for his willingness to challenge the school system’s leadership – and his own colleagues and even student leaders – when the need presented itself.

He, too, deserves thanks.

APS Has Bigger Issues than School Names

Editor: In today’s political environment, divisiveness often seems the point. Divisive “virtue signaling” has become an unfortunate and all too common feature of our public dialogue.

(Definition from the Urban Dictionary: “To take a conspicuous but essentially meaningless action to support a good cause but actually to show off how much more moral you are than everybody else.”)

The recent decision in Fairfax County to change the name of J.E.B. Stuart High School and the pressure in Arlington to change the name of WashingtonLee High School are current examples.

As the great-grandson of a Union officer, I have no particular dog in the fight over school names or street names or Confederate monuments. However, I do believe such fights are relatively unimportant given our current problems, and that the divisiveness they engender bleeds away political capital and unity that could be better used. And these days, they often seem grounded in a gross simplification of long-ago history such as the origins of the Civil War. While slavery was a moral dilemma for our country virtually from the beginning, it was not the cause of the Civil War, nor what the fighting was about. In

Lincoln’s first inaugural address, he said: “I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.” After the war began, he reiterated this position in 1862 in a letter to Horace Greely: “My paramount objective in this struggle is to save the Union and not either to save or destroy slavery.”

The relative balance of power between the states and the federal government had long been an issue as well, with many believing that having ratified the Constitution and joined the Union, States could also leave – in other words, that states were sovereign. The Civil War decided that question, just as it also laid the political groundwork for emancipation and ultimately for the abolition of slavery.

With conflicted loyalties, Lee chose his state. Yet the Union decided not to treat him as a traitor. After the war, his leadership became an important part of Southern participation in national reconciliation, and Southerners have been loyal and important members of the U.S. military ever since.

Now, 150 years after the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, Arlington County faces a real moral problem. The

county’s housing patterns have resulted in a divided school system, with wealthy and primarily white north Arlington schools performing extremely well and less affluent and more diverse schools in South Arlington performing less well. As a consequence, there is a large gap in academic performance between white students and Hispanics and African-Americans. Inevitably, this disadvantages these minority children as they advance in life.

Arlington needs to provide the leadership and resources to address this real problem.

Editor: Regarding the article on County Board Chairman Jay Fisette cautioning against acquisition of parkland [Dec. 28], it’s important to note that all conservation is local. As the world and our country drifts to environmental degradation, our decisions in Arlington show our true colors.

Let us put our dollars where our supposed beliefs are – preserve more green natural space in Arlington as a matter of investment and faith in a better environmental and economic future.

With the knowledge, political beliefs and wealth in Arlington, we can do no

less.

The benefits and payoffs are enormous for current and future generations.

It is environmentally dangerous to pave and manicure too much of any city. The time is now. Let Arlington do its part to preserve and create valuable green space in our rapidly developing county. Pocket parks and other natural-land solutions are not “willy nilly” concepts.

With Jay Fisette’s personal environmental interests, I hope he would lead the way on creating more natural spaces in Arlington.

The attempt to remove “Lee” from its name (not to mentioned renaming many of our neighborhood streets) will fracture and divide our community.

And to what end? To rename the school after someone nobody has ever heard of, at a huge financial cost to taxpayers, when the school system is already up against its debt limit and facing large, unknown costs for new buildings and programs?

It is time we move on, just as Lee tried to do. Otherwise, we will continue to fight the Civil War for generations.

Casually dismissing alumni, her only dog in this fight seems to be her sense of self-congratulatory rectitude.

So many Founding Fathers are inconveniently implicated in the establishment and practice of slavery, proponents of a

draconian change to Washington-Lee’s name find it convenient, for their purposes, to elevate Lee’s defense of slavery as uniquely immoral.

If this zealotry must overwhelm reason, change the school’s name to Washington-Lee, as in Richard Henry Lee or Francis Lightfoot Lee, both signers of the Declaration of Independence, as has been proposed by another letter-writer.

Why the Rush on a Name Change?

Editor: In reply to Kristine Montamat [“Time to Drop ‘Washington-Lee’,” Letters Dec. 21], this is NOT the time to change the name of Washington-Lee High School.

Nor is it the time to topple the Washington Monument, raze the Jefferson Memorial or blow up the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (though some commuters may disagree).

What it IS time for is uniting the American people, and forcing a re-naming of Washington-Lee will have the op-

posite effect. Bear in mind that the root cause of the protests in Charlottesville was the decision to remove the statue of Robert E. Lee from Lee Park. Renaming Washington-Lee likely would have a similar effect.

We do not need to act in haste. If renaming W-L is truly a good idea, it will still be a good idea two years from now, so do it then. If it is not, then this is a hornets’ nest that we do not need to kick.

Bay Foundation’s annual “Grasses for the Masses” initiative provides an opportunity for local residents to help restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s rivers.

Participants will attend a workshop to receive a simple kit and instructions to grow native aquatic “celery” grasses in their homes, classrooms or businesses during the winter, and plant them at Mason Neck Park in the spring. The grasses filter nutrients and provide important habitat for fish and other aquatic creatures.

The fee to participate is $40, which covers part of the cost of the kit and includes a one-year membership to Chesapeake Bay Foundation.

Lone County Board Independent Lays Out Goals Vihstadt Is Likely to Face Challenge to Re-Election Bid from Democrats in November SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

As he gears up for what might be a complicated re-election bid, County Board member John Vihstadt laid out his priorities for the coming year during the board’s traditional organizational-meeting remarks on Jan. 2.

And while there was a little something for every constituency included – from Metro to parks to housing to education – Vihstadt largely kept his focus on the issue that propelled him to office in 2014: being responsible with the public’s money.

“We’ve got to instill a stronger sense of fiscal discipline and efficiency in county government,” he said. “There’s no doubt we will have difficult budgeting decisions.

Tradeoffs are coming.”

In remarks slated for delivery at the meeting, Vihstadt also called for more effective management of capital projects and reform of the county government’s procurement process.

“Cost overruns, defective workmanship and missed delivery deadlines are not

acceptable,” he said.

“Let’s build on the early success of our new, independent county auditor by conducting thorough performance reviews of the largest programs in every county department on a regular, but random, basis,” Vihstadt added.

Had things turned out differently, Vihstadt – the first nonDemocrat elected to the County Board since 1999 – might have been chairing the body this year. But, a year ago, three Democrats on the body (Jay Fisette, Katie Cristol and Christian Dorsey) voted against giving him the vice-chairmanship for 2017, which probably would have led to the chairmanship in 2018. Cristol was expected to be elected chairman at the organizational meeting, held after the Sun Gazette’s print deadline, with Dorsey as vice chairman.

Vihstadt in the spring of 2014 defeated Democrat Alan Howze in a special election called to fill the seat of Chris Zimmerman, who had resigned. In a rerun that November, Vihstadt against defeated Alan Howze, who has since moved out of the region.

Regaining the seat is likely to be a top priority of the Arlington County Demo-

cratic Committee this year. While some names have been floated as prospective challengers to Vihstadt, they may not have the name recognition or fund-raising ability to compete on an even footing in November.

Since taking office in 2014, Vihstadt has straddled the line between outsider looking in and insider looking out. Despite his calls for fiscal restraint, last year Vihstadt did support a tax-rate increase that socked Arlington property owners to pay the costs of higher school enrollment and fixes to the dilapidated Metro system.

In his remarks, Vihstadt called for implementation of a recommendation from the county’s 2015 Community Facilities study: a cost/benefit analysis of every proposed new residential and commercial development.

“Other jurisdictions do this; so can Arlington,” he said in comments that may raise eyebrows in the development community, which already is wary of the direction of County Board policy.

And some portions of Vihstadt’s remarks may not go down too well with the county’s Republican rank-and-file, who played a part in the coalition that first elected him to office. He said he would support a dedicated funding source for Metro, and would push to win local gov-

ernments more authority from the General Assembly.

“Let’s leverage the new political dynamic in Richmond by broadening the scope of community benefits to find new ways to help offset the cost and stress of additional development on our surrounding neighborhoods,” Vihstadt said.

The Jan. 2 County Board organizational meeting was a largely pro-forma affair; board members hold their first working meeting of the year later in the month.

Police Officer Dimitrios Mastoras of the Arlington County Police Department was among 14 public-safety officers across the region saluted Dec. 15 by the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) at the 20th-anniversary Law Enforcement Awards of Excellence for Impaired Driving Prevention.

The awards were presented at a ceremony held at Maggiano’s Little Italy in McLean.

The awardees “represent the front lines in the fight against drunk driving in greater Washington,” said Kurt Gregory Erickson, WRAP’s president. “Their collective effort to annually arrest and remove nearly 15,000 drunk drivers from area roadways has undoubtedly saved lives.”

Founded in 1982, the nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program provides public education, health-education programs and advocacy, and sponsors the free ride service for would-be drunk drivers, SoberRide.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF N.VA. PROFFERS GRANTS TO SUPPORT ‘STEM’ EDUCATION: The Community

Foundation for Northern Virginia’s Business Women’s Giving Circle recently announced recipients of a total

of $53,000 to five non-profit organizations and schools that provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) leadership-and-entrepreneurship programs to girls and young women in the local area.

Grants will go to support George Mason University Foundation’s FOCUS Academy; Hillsboro Charter Academy; Space of Her Own Inc.; Wesley Housing Development Corp.; and Year Up National Capital Region.

The grant program received 28 applications, up from 21 a year ago, said Lauri Isbrandtsen, who co-chairs the grants committee.

The grants are designed to “inspire young girls and women to acquire new interests, build their confidence and help them to realize their full potential,” said Isbrandtsen, a retired human-resources director at Lockheed Martin.

Since its inception, the Business Women’s Giving Circle has awarded $178,000 in grants. The new cycle will be presented on Jan. 30.

CATHOLIC DIOCESE DETAILS ENDOF-YEAR FINANCIAL STATUS: The

Roman Catholic Diocese of Arlington had 463,897 registered parishioners in 154,308 households in 2017, spread over 70 parishes and six missions incorporat-

ing an area running west to the West Virginia line and south to Fredericksburg.

The diocese detailed its year in review with a supplement to the Dec. 21-27 edition of the Arlington Catholic Herald.

“I can say that I am the beneficiary of a diocese stable, devout and prepared for future growth and opportunities,” said Bishop Michael Burbidge, who in December 2016 succeeded Bishop Paul Loverde.

In 2017, the diocese had 269 total priests, including 185 serving parishes.

It had 125 religious sisters, six religious brothers and 99 deacons.

For the year, there were 7,076 baptisms, 7,284 first communions, 6,244 confirmations and 1,486 marriages overseen by the diocese.

Total parish revenue from all sources, including schools, stood at about $243 million for the year, with more than 93 percent of parishes and missions ending the year with an operating surplus.

Va. Home Sales and Prices See Year-Over-Year Improvement Virginia’s real-estate market remained on solid ground in November, according to new data, with higher sales and prices pushing total yearover-year sales volume up nearly 9 percent.

A total of 8,982 properties went to closing statewide in November, according to figures reported Dec. 21 by Virginia Realtors. That’s up 3.9 percent from November 2016 and up a whopping 34.7 percent from November 2014.

“November sales show there are still buyers in the market who are ready to make the deal if they can find the house they want,” said Jay Mitchell, incoming president of the statewide trade group, which has a membership of about 33,000.

The median sales price of all residential properties that went to market was up 2 percent to $270,000 in November.

“While the fourth quarter can typically slow, we are still seeing tight inventory and high demand from buyers for homes that present well and are priced right,” Mitchell said. “The tail end of 2017 is significantly outpacing the final weeks of 2016, and prices continue to tick upward.”

Adding up the sales and prices, the total sales volume for the month was $3.02 billion, up 8.7 percent from $2.78 billion a year before.

Some buyers are hopping into the market now in an effort to beat expected increases in mortgage-interest rates and uncertainty about the impacts of the federal tax-reform package recently adopted.

For the moment, interest rates are relatively stable, having hovered at less then 4 percent for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage since early spring. The average rate of 3.92 percent in November was up slightly from 3.9 percent in October, according to Freddie Mac. Homes that went to closing in November spent an average of 62 days between listing and ratified sales contract, an improvement from 71 days in November 2016, 79 days in November 2015 and 80 days in November 2014.

Police Beat ROBBERY: n On Dec. 22 at 3:26 p.m., a man entered a bank in the 1700 block of North McKinley Road, approached the counter and passed a note to a teller claiming to be armed and demanding money.

The suspect then fled.

The suspect is described as a white male, 40 to 50 years old, 5’6”, chubby. n On Dec. 22 at 11:55 p.m., two individuals entered a business in the 1600 block of South Glebe Road, brandished firearms and demanded those inside move to the back of the business.

The suspects then stole items prior to fleeing.

The suspects are described as black males, in their early 20s. One is described at 5’10” with a slim build and medium skin tone; the other is described at 5’7” with a medium skin tone.

BRANDISHING: n On Dec. 22 at 7:41 p.m., police were dispatched to the 5200 block of Yorktown Boulevard for a report of an individual

holding another person at gunpoint.

According to police, three individuals were walking in a park when a suspect jumped out from the bushes, brandished a firearm and threatened the victims before allowing them to leave.

None of the victims were injured, and nothing was stolen.

The suspect is described as a white male, in his late teens or early 20s.

BURGLARY: n On Dec. 26 at 11:53 p.m., a business in the 600 block of South Carlin Springs Blvd. was burglarized. Nothing was reported missing, but the building suffered damage.

LARCENY: n On Dec. 22 at 12:41 p.m., police were dispatched to the area of the 4600 block of 4th Street South for a report of packages being taken off porches in the vicinity and a vehicle being gone through.

They certainly wanted to win their tournament, but more importantly, the Wakefield Warriors used the three basgames BASKETBALL ketball and learned from a runner-up finish as preparation for the rest of the regular season and conference schedule.

Wakefield (8-3) lost to the Battlefield Bobcats, 88-81, Dec. 28 in the boys championship game of the 15th annual George Long Holiday Hoops Tournament. The Warriors were 2-1 in the high school competition, finishing second for the fifth time. They have won four titles, the last in 2015.

The loss also snapped Wakefield’s five game winning streak this season.

“We treat this tournament like three real good scrimmages with our uniforms on, to get us ready for our tough district schedule,” Wakefield coach Tony Bentley said. “We played three good teams and had three opportunities to improve Continued on Page 17

For the second year in a row, the Wakefield Warriors won the Park View High School girls holiday basketball tournament with a 2-0 record.

BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Wakefield (6-2) scored 40 points in each game, defeating Hanover, 40-31, in the first round, then Seton, 40-39, with a comeback in the championship game.

Wakefield trailed by as many as 11 points in the final, against a Seton team that scored 70 points in its first-round victory over Park View.

“We changed our defense when we got behind and started creating a lot of 16

ball pressure and trapping and converted some turnovers into layups,” Wakefield coach Marcia Richardson said. “We just got more aggressive.”

Wakefield was led by tournament Most Valuable Player Jami Tham, who scored 38 points in the tournament. Wakefield’s Hannah Foley and Nevaeh Wallace made the all-tournament team by leading the Warriors in scoring.

Against Seton, Tham scored 16, Foley and Wallace six each, Taylor Thompson five and Jayela Lopez four.

Against Hanover, Tham scored 21, Wallace eight, Foley four and Lauryn Freeman four. n The Bishop O’Connell boys (8-3) finished second at the Torrey Pines Holiday Invitational Tournament in San Diego,

losing to Archbishop Stepinac of New York, 67-66, in the championship game of the National Division.

O’Connell was 3-1 in the tournament, with the loss in the final snapping an eight-game winning streak.

In the final, Stepinac took the lead at 67-65 with 90 seconds to play. O’Connell had the game’s final possession, but missed a shot as time expired.

The Knights rallied from a 42-33 halftime deficit and trailed 56-52 entering the fourth quarter.

So why can’t the Bishop O’Connell Knights and Wakefield Warriors play once a season in boys high school basketball? The teams have met on occasion, but not with any regularity.

An annual showdown should be a “must” event, say on an early-season Saturday afternoon or night. Whatever gym hosts the game likely would be sold out, drawing tremendous interest from fans of all kinds throughout Arlington and Northern Virginia and making big bucks.

Rotate the games, one year at O’Connel the next at Wakefield.

Each season O’Connell and Wakefield often are 20-win teams and among tops in their conferences and earn state-tournament berths – the Knights on the Division I privateschool level and Wakefield in whatever public-school classification it falls under that particular campaign.

Both teams are off to strong starts again this winter.

On the map, as the crow flies, the schools are only three or four miles apart, so travel is no issue.

There is often talk about the teams meeting, but the chatter ends there.

Neither school nor head coach makes the all-Arlington showdown a priority. Certainly any scheduling conflict could be arranged, because each team plays multiple non-conference contests during their regular seasons.

Instead, excuses are offered with no followups to any official talks. As a result, high school basketball fans are cheated of a potential high-interest contest involving top-level players.

Maybe an intermediary could get involved to negotiate and finalize the scheduling of such a game by drawing the parties together.

Boys high school basketball fans in Arlington and the area deserve that O’Connell and Wakefield to play once a season.

The Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place between the boys and girls varsity basketball games against Herndon on Jan. 19.

Cooper had 17 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks. He and Horsford combined for 31 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. In contrast, the two combined for only one point and took just three shots in the third quarter, when St. Albans began making its comeback.

“They are our two senior leaders and we want to lean on them in those situations,” Bentley said. “It was their turn to come up big.”
