The Internal Revenue Service on Dec. 27 announced that pre-payment of 2018 state and local property taxes would only be deductible for 2017 if assessments on the property already have been made. In Virginia jurisdictions, including Arlington, assessments come out in mid-to-late

January and bills are mailed out in the spring, so property owners “will not be allowed to deduct the prepayment on their federal tax returns [for 2017],” the federal tax agency said.
