A split Arlington School Board on June 29 approved a new four-year contract with Superintendent Patrick Murphy, whose eight-year tenure has coincided with an ongoing growth spurt and has brought mixed reviews from the public and school system’s rank-and-file. A board majority of Tannia Talento, James Lander and Chairman Nancy Van Doren provided the cushion for contract approval. Barbara Kanninen and Reid Goldstein voted against. Murphy’s previous contract ran through mid-2018, but Virginia school districts Patrick Murphy often renegotiate contracts a year before they end. When he was first hired, Murphy earned just under $200,000 a year, a figure that has risen to about $230,000 a year. Under the new contract, Murphy will earn just under $239,000 for the 12month period beginning July 1. Van Doren pressed to give the superintendent a vote of confidence, suggesting that a change in leadership at a critical moment would not be in the best interests of the school system or, ultimately, students. “We need stability and strength,” she
