County Regains Judgeship; Will Funding Follow?

The 17th Circuit Court soon could return to a four-judge body for the first time in six years, if the two houses of the General Assembly can come to terms on
funding the fourth slot. Gov. Northam has signed legislation increasing from three judges to four the maximum number allocated to the 17th Circuit, which incorporates Arlington and Falls Church. But for those seeking the additional judgeship, that’s only half
the battle – funding for the position currently is caught in the middle of budget negotiations between the state Senate and House of Delegates. “The funding for a fourth judge is in the House bill, but not in the Senate,” said Del. Patrick Hope (D-47th). “The House
funded the judge – and a bunch of other things – because Medicaid expansion brings in federal revenue that frees up money we can apply elsewhere. The Senate budget doesn’t have expansion, so we Continued on Page 22
