It was just a formality – probably like the general election will be – but U.S. Rep. Don Beyer kicked off his bid for re-election during a speech to Arlington Democrats on Jan. 6.

“I’m going to run,” Beyer (D-8th) said to absolutely no one’s surprise, as supporters passed around petitions to help him obtain the requisite number of signatures for ballot access.

Elected to succeed U.S. Rep. Jim Moran in 2014, Beyer sits in one of the most Democratic-leaning congressional districts in the nation, and is unlikely to face any hurdles to a third term.

Much of his focus will be on winning a Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Democrats need 24 additional seats to win back the majority they lost in the 2010 elections. Beyer, who is treasurer of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said he believes 91 Republican-held seats potentially could be flipped, and “we have good candidates in 88 of those 91.”

Arlington Jobless Rate Again Is Lowest in Virginia Arlington’s jobless rate was unchanged in November, with the county retaining its position having the best employment picture in the commonwealth.

With 145,265 county residents employed in the civilian workforce and 3,544 looking for work, Arlington’s jobless rate of 2.4 percent in November stood lowest among the state’s 133 cities and counties, according to data reported Jan. 4 by the Virginia Employment Commission.

The lack of any change from October to November was emblematic of the region as a whole, which saw only a little month-over-month movement in most jurisdictions. Unemployment rates for the month stood at 2.8 percent in Alexandria (unchanged), also 2.8 percent in Falls Church (up from 2.6 percent), 3 percent in both Fairfax and Loudoun counties (up from 2.9 percent in each case) and 3.3 percent in Prince William County (up from 3.2 percent).

Overall, Northern Virginia’s jobless rate of 3 percent in November was steady from

a month before, representing 1.56 million the workforce and 49,011 looking for jobs.

Statewide, the non-seasonally-adjusted jobless rate for the month was 3.6 percent, unchanged from a month ago.

Both private-sector and publicsector jobs were down slightly from a year before.

Among Virginia’s cities and counties, the lowest jobless rate was turned in by Arlington and then a five-way tie for second place (2.8 percent) between Alexandria, Falls Church, Charlottesville, Greene County and Madison County. The highest rates were found in Petersburg (7.1 percent), Buchanan County (7 percent), Martinsville (6.8 percent), Dickenson County (6.6 percent) and Wise County (6.2 percent).

Among the commonwealth’s metro corridors, Northern Virginia had the lowest jobless rate, followed by Winchester (3.1 percent) and Charlottesville (3.2 percent). The highest rates were turned in by Lynchburg (4.2 percent) and Newport News (4.1 percent).

The Washington area was among 17 of the nation’s 388 metropolitan corridors where jobless rates were steady in November, according to figures reported Jan. 4 by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Year-over-year improvement in joblessness was reported in 304 metro areas, while 67 areas saw worse conditions.

In the D.C. region, there were 3.38 million in the civilian workforce and about 122,600 looking for jobs during the month. Both categories showed

slight numerical increases from a year before.

Nationally, the lowest unemployment rate for December was reported in Ames, Iowa, at 1.5 percent, followed by Mankato, Minn., and Honolulu, at 1.9 percent each. The highest rates were found in El Centro, Calif., and Yuma, Ariz., at 19.8 percent and 15.6 percent, respectively.

The national, non-seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate of 3.9 percent in November was down from 4.4 percent a year before.

Among the nine Virginia metropolitan areas outside the D.C. region, unemployment was either down slightly or unchanged from a year before.

Winchester and Charlottesville posted the lowest jobless rates, at 3.2 percent, while Lynchburg had the highest, at 4.2 percent.

Malinosky Lauded As Tenure Nears Its End

Arlington Democratic Chairman Praised for Kindness, Attention to Detail SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Kip Malinosky’s run as chairman of the Arlington County Democratic Committee began with that rarest of political events – a Democratic loss in a local election – when independent John Vihstadt defeated Democrat Alan Howze in a spring 2014 County Board special election.

Vihstadt thumped Howze a second time several months later in the general election.

Anyone who thinks the defeat might have sidetracked Malinosky’s enthusiasm for his job and the Democratic message doesn’t know his resilience.

“Kip is probably the most reliable, the most conscientious person. If he promises he is going to do something, you can check it off your list,” said Maureen Markham, a former deputy chair of the Arlington Democrats and one of about 100 people who came to the organization’s annual breakfast Jan. 6 to salute Malinosky’s four-year tenure.

“There’s not a kinder guy. He is full of integrity,” said Carol Fontein, who leads the committee’s precinct-operations ef-

forts (a job Malinosky had before being tapped as chairman). “Kip has been the best boss I ever had. He is the model of equanimity.”

And he never misses an opportunity to interact with the public. Malinosky “knocks doors in his sleep,” Fontein said with a chuckle.

“He creates and cultivates a culture where everyone is involved,” said County Board vice chairman Christian Dorsey.

U.S. Rep. Don Beyer (D-8th) said efforts by Malinosky and others have

helped to turn the Arlington County Democratic Committee into “the most powerful, organized, fruitful, productive” such committee in the nation.

By day, Malinosky – whose first name is a derivative of Christopher – is a teacher of civics and history at Glasgow Middle School in Fairfax County.

“I’ve seen Kip in the classroom. It is like a conductor leading an orchestra,” said Charley Conrad, a veteran Demo-

cratic activist, friend and educator himself. “He’s affecting the lives of a lot of folks; we all remember that teacher that made a difference in our lives.”

Malinosky got the last word, and said the breakfast had proved “really special and really amazing.”

“The walk was not always easy,” the outgoing chairman said, pointing to the twin Democratic losses to Vihstadt in 2014 and the election of President Trump (even though Virginia supported Hillary Clinton) in 2016. But he zeroed in on the camaraderie and shared values of those in the local Democratic ranks.

“We really make each other great,” he said. “We need to be our brother’s keeper and our sister’s keeper – we have to double down on that.”

The party will pick a successor on Jan. 10; Steve Baker and Jill Caiazzo are seeking the post. Malinosky said he plans to stay involved, and likely will remain a fixture in the retail politics of precinct operations.

“We’ve still got a lot of doors to knock on,” Conrad told Malinosky.

“Yes, we do,” came the reply. “Eat, drink and be merry – for tomorrow, we knock.”

A year after a rare tussle over who would serve in leadership posts on the Arlington County Board, there was unanimity on the dais POLITICAL for 2018. memPOTPOURRI bersBoard on Jan. 2 voted 5-0 for Katie Cristol to succeed Jay Fisette (who has retired) as board chairman, and Christian Dorsey to serve as vice chairman. The two posts traditionally rotate among board members on a calendar-year basis.

A year ago, in January 2017, the vote for Fisette as board chairman sailed through on a 5-0 vote, but board members then split on Cristol as vice chair, with Libby Garvey and John Vihstadt backing Vihstadt’s bid for the second post but Fisette, Cristol and Dorsey opposing it.

(The Vihstadt-Garvey tag team ended up voting to support Cristol as vice chairman in 2017 after their measure to install Vihstadt in the position failed.)

At the time of the January 2017 vote, the Fisette/Dorsey/Cristol coalition did not question Vihstadt’s competence, but 4

said his lack of commitment to progressive ideas made him unsuitable for a leadership post in Arlington.

Left publicly unsaid was the fact that giving Vihstadt the vice chairmanship in 2017 would have put him in line to chair the board this year, when he is seeking reelection.

Those supporting Cristol for vice chairman in 2017 had history on their side: Back when Arlington was more a two-political-party community, whichever party had a majority on the County Board installed its own members in leadership posts, excluding those from the other party.

Democrats have controlled the board continuously since 1983, and for much of that time (though not now) have held a monopoly on seats.

During the January 2017 tussle, Vihstadt pointed out that the Democratic majority on the School Board had twice tapped Republican David Foster to serve as chairman of that body a decade ago; Fisette noted, correctly if not entirely convincingly, that the School Board technically was a nonpartisan body, while the County Board was not.

in Top Spots: Incoming Gov. Ralph Northam is keeping two Arlington residents in the statewide posts they have occupied during the McAuliffe administration.

The Northam transition team announced that Richard Holcomb will be reappointed to serve as the commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Holcomb has served in the position since the days of Gov. McDonnell in 2010, and previously held the job under Govs. George Allen and Jim Gilmore.

In addition, Jaime Areizaga-Soto will continue in his position as deputy secretary of veteran and defense affairs for the commonwealth, a position he has occupied since 2014.

Prior to the state position, AreizagaSoto served at the U.S. Agency for International Development. He also is a colonel in the Army National Guard.

In 2011, Areizaga-Soto competed against Barbara Favola for the Democratic nomination to run for the 31st state Senate seat held by Mary Margaret Whipple, who was retiring. Favola, then serving on the County Board, won the nomination and went on to win election and, four years later, re-election.

Encore Stage & Studio continues to wend its way through its 50th-anniversary season, this time ON with something a more cerebral STAGE little and heavier on intricate plot development than many of its productions.

“Sherlock Holmes,” an adaptation of the 90-percent serious, 10-percent comedic stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, puts the title character in a battle against the evil Professor Moriarty, with nothing less than world peace hanging in the balance.

Well, world peace is one of the plot threads. There also are some missing letters (of the postage, not the alphabet, variety); a royal wedding; a gang of rogue suffragettes; some underworld shenanigans; and the very honor of Queen Victoria in the mix. Plus a very budding, and alas thwarted, start at a romance.

The 100-minute roller-coaster ride begins in a London home, where a young woman appears to be held against her will. Holmes arrives and things begin to get, well, complicated. In a hurry.

Kevin Cabral, a junior at Yorktown High School, has the always-challenging task of setting the right tone in the complicated character that is Holmes. Make him too much a smarmy know-it-all – “I’m not clever, I’m brilliant” – and the audience starts to root for the bad guys.

Cabral’s take added just enough goofiness and humor to make it very palatable.

(Aidan Foley was along as Watson, and did a good job in limited stage time.)

As Moriarty, Declan Roberts effectively plays the evil meanie with a smatterings of buffoonery, a nice touch.

Also worth pointing out among the cast: Gia Jackson and Oliver Meek as the couple trying to pull a fast one on Holmes; Tara Hall as the young lady who holds the key to the plot; Ryely Rogers as “Gashouse Gertie,” always ready to whip up a bomb (“I stand by me product”); Josh Ramthun as a safecracker; Jacob BowenGlazeroff as a servant with a secret; and Elena Wear as Moriarty’s efficient second-in-command.

As noted at the top, this is a show with more complicated plot development than most Encore productions. It’s described as suitable for ages 6 and older, although it’s a toss-up whether some audience members will be able to follow the twists and turns without some helpful explanations

along the way. It probably was a wise move to eschew an attempt at English accents, which would have muddied the waters further.

Director Sarah Conrad moved the pace along, and the sets (Kristen Jepperson) and costumes (Debra Leonard) were up to Encore’s usual high standards.

Saturday’s productions were perhaps unique in Encore history, as a boiler issue at Gunston Middle School meant digging, scraping and jackhammering were taking place a floor below as emergency-repair work progressed. There was an impact, but both cast and audience seemed to take the noisy disruption in good humor.

Did I like it? Yes. It was nice to see a change of pace in the Encore repertoire, and it was effectively done.

While this probably only has relevance to a small core of Arlingtonians who spend their time at board meetings, it is in fact a positive step in transparency, and hopefully will further encourage county-government staff to get THUMBS UP: To County Board information about board items members, for what seems a posi- posted in a timely manner.

And then, after dealing with that first rush, staff of the office had to contend with residents – some of them in a cranky mood – who wanted their cash back. They’ll get it, but it may take some time.

All in all, it was a good job under trying circumstances for the staff.

(And just to throw out a firecracker, we’ll wonder aloud: How many of those people who tried this end-run around a higher federal tax bill are the type of people who rant and rave when corporations use the tax rules to their own advantage? Just askin’ . . .)

The More Parkland Acquisition, the Better

Editor: The request to acquire land for a “pocket park” in Aurora Highlands reflects the strong desires of Arlington residents for more parklands. This mirrors many similar appeals from neighborhood associations and the public in response to the uncontrolled private and public development occurring at a dizzying pace in Arlington [“Acquisition of Parkland Draws Fisette Caution,” Dec. 28].

The Arlington County government’s own 2016 survey of residents showed

the strongest support for investments in open spaces that were natural areas and green spaces. Waiting for a “master plan” for these acquisitions not only limits the opportunity to take advantage of unique opportunities like this, but also assumes that it is impossible to make a rational evaluation of the opportunities without a comprehensive picture.

Also, the assumption that “without many amenities, it won’t get used that much” (as voiced by Mr. Fisette) denies the value of open spaces and green spaces that do not have formal recreation fa-

cilities. Reduced density, common space and simple amenities such as benches or picnic tables could be the anchor for a wide variety of informal neighborhood activities that create a sense of community.

If this acquisition results in many similar requests, this is a positive development. The public has spoken regarding their priority for acquisition of land for green spaces, and the County Board should respond.

Arlington Centennial Now Just Two Years in the Future SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer

Arlington’s centennial – at least by one way of figuring it – is on the horizon. Is it too early to start planning a party?

Short answer: Yes. But it’s unlikely the 100th anniversary will go uncelebrated.

It was on March 17, 1920, that Gov. Westmoreland Davis signed legislation changing the name of Alexandria County to Arlington County, in large part to avoid confusion between the county and the city of Alexandria to the south.

The measure had proved uncontroversial in Richmond. Introduced by Del. Charles Jessee, a Democrat who represented both the city and county of Alexandria, it was approved Feb. 21, 1920, by the House of Delegates on a 59-0 vote, then won state Senate passage three weeks later on a 34-0 vote.

(The change merited front-page coverage in the Washington Star on the day it was signed into law by the governor, albeit just a single paragraph’s worth. Much of the front page that day was dominated by the increasingly bloody battles between right and left for control of post-World War I Germany.)

The name change did not at the time impact Arlington’s form of governance; since Reconstruction, the county had been led by a three-member, district-based Board of Supervisors. It would not be until 1932 that the current five-member, at-large County Board structure sprang into being – a change that also required General Assembly approval.

Johnathan Thomas, president of the Arlington Historical Society, said that while there have been no specific discussions about how to celebrate the centennial, it is on the organization’s radar.

“We have been pretty active with World War I centennial information, but will turn our efforts to the name change at some point soon,” he said.

Frank O’Leary, a former Arlington treasurer who has studied the community’s pre-1920 government structure, says he thinks the 100th anniversary of the name change is worthy of celebration.

This historical record is a tad hazy on why the name change took place when it did, and how much, if at all, local residents were involved in the process.

O’Leary is among those with a theory why the state government took action to change the name in 1920, although he acknowledges the story is unsubstantiated.

According to the version that has been passed down, the Army Air Corps had agreed to fly over the Alexandria County Courthouse on Nov. 11, 1919, to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the armistice that ended fighting in what at the time was called the Great War. But the nascent air force ended up flying over the wrong Alexandria, with their planes buzzing the city courthouse instead.

The change of name from “Alexandria County” to “Arlington County” was front-page news in the Washington Star in early 1920, albeit meriting just a single paragraph.

Pop-quiz time: Residents of which of these two communities – Sterling or Arlington – have the shortest average commute time?

If new data from the U.S. Census Bureau are to be believed, the answer is: It’s a tie.

Arlington and Sterling residents each have, on average, a 28.3-minute trip from home to work, according to the Census Bureau’s updated American Communities Survey.

Released in December, the survey compiled responses from 2012 to 2016 for

communities across the country related to demographics, employment, home-ownership and more.

Arlington’s average commute rate – by any means of transportation – was slightly higher than the 28.1-minute statewide average. In fact, only four of the 67 communities reviewed by InsideNoVa across the Northern Virginia inner and outer suburbs had commute times better than the statewide average. At 25.3 minutes, Herndon had the lowest in the region.

COUNTY KEEPING OPTIONS OPEN ON HIGHWAY RENAMINGS: Any action

to change the names of Jefferson Davis Highway or Lee Highway could boil down to “what it might mean in practical terms” – including how much of a burden changes would place on property owners in the two corridors.

Those were the words of County Board Chairman Katie Cristol, quizzed on the name-change possibility during the board’s Jan. 2 meeting with members of the Arlington County Civic Federation.

Even if Arlington wins the ability to change the names – more on that in a moment – there is “a much larger community conversation [needed] about whether we should,” Cristol said.

As part of their 2018 General Assembly legislative package, Arlington board members have asked for permission from the General Assembly to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway (U.S. Route 1) as it runs through the county.

That name was attached to the highway in the 1920s by the General Assembly, and the state attorney general’s office has opined that Arlington officials do not

have the power to unilaterally remove it.

U.S. Route 1 – officially known since 2010 as “Historic Route 1” in Virginia – is one of the longest roads in the commonwealth, but its name changes frequently depending on which of the 17 counties and cities drivers happen to be in at any given time. Besides Jefferson Davis Highway, they include Richmond Highway, Cambridge Street, Washington Highway, Brook Road, Chamberlayne Avenue, Richmond-Petersburg Highway and Boynton Plank Road.

As for Lee Highway (U.S. Route 29), the government might be able to petition the Commonwealth Transportation Board for a name change. Or, county officials alternately could go to the General Assembly.

Although Republicans – rarely friendly to Arlington’s desires – maintain control of both houses of the state legislature, the results of the Nov. 7 election could help the county’s cause, Cristol said.

The situation has “changed pretty dramatically with the changes in the make-up of the General Assembly,” the new board chairman said in what might be a case of unbridled optimism untempered by political reality.

Existing-Home Sales See Strong Pace in November Existing-home sales surged for the third straight month in November and reached their strongest pace in almost 11 years, according to new data from the National Association of Realtors, all major regions except for the West saw a significant hike in sales activity last month.

Total existing-home sales jumped 5.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.81 million in November – the strongest pace since late 2006.

Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, says home sales in most of the country expanded at a tremendous clip in November.

“Faster economic growth in recent quarters, the booming stock market and continuous job gains are fueling substantial demand for buying a home as 2017 comes to an end,” he said. “As evidenced by a subdued level of firsttime buyers and increased share of cash buyers, move-up buyers with considerable down payments and those with cash made up a bulk of the sales activity last month. The odds of closing on a home are much better at the upper end of the market, where inventory conditions continue to be markedly better.”

The median existing-home price for all housing types in November was $248,000, up 5.8 percent from November 2016 ($234,400). November’s price increase marks the 69th straight month of year-over-year gains.

Total housing inventory at the end of November dropped 7.2 percent to 1.67 million existing homes available for sale, and is now 9.7 percent lower than a year ago (1.85 million) and has fallen year-over-year for 30 consecutive months.

“The anticipated rise in mortgage rates next year could further cut into affordability if these staggeringly low supply levels persist,” Yun said. “Price appreciation is too fast in a lot of markets right now. The increase in homebuilder optimism must translate to significantly more new construction in 2018 to help ease these acute inventory shortages.”

Matching the highest share since May, all-cash sales were 22 percent of transactions in November, a figure that is up from 20 percent in October and 21 percent a year ago, according to NAR data.

VOTING FOR DECAL NEARS CONCLUSION: Jan. 15 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for

Arlington residents to cast ballots in the 2018-19 vehicle-decal competition, sponsored by the county treasurer’s office.

Four student submissions were selected as finalists in December. The design selected by the public from among them will be seen on about 160,000 windshields of vehicles garaged in the county starting over the summer.

Again this year, those taking part will rank the submissions in preference in an “instant-runoff” voting process. Results will be announced on Jan. 30.

DONATIONS FOR TRANSPLANTS UP IN REGION: For the second year in a row, the

Washington Regional Transplant Community surpassed expectations by recovering and allocating 444 life-saving organs in 2017, an organizational record.

The organs – hearts, lungs, pancreases, kidneys, intestines and livers – aided in saving the lives of 386 individuals throughout the metro area and the nation, while also contributing to the national transplant wait-list numbers dropping from 18,895 in January 2017 to 15,639 in January 2018, a decline of more than 17 percent.

In conjunction with the record number of organs, the organization facilitated the gift of 372 tissue donors, which will be used in hundreds of life-enhancing surgeries across the country.

“Our team of experts exceeded expectations because of their passion, dedication and commitment to saving lives,” said Lori Brigham, president of the transplant consortium.

Currently, there are more than 2,300 patients on the transplant waitlist in the Washington metropolitan area. The Washington Regional Transplant Community works in partnership with six transplant centers and 44 hospitals, as well as providing public education.

The organization will bestow $2,500 scholarships on a 2018 Arlington Public Schools graduate planning on a career in education. Last year, 16 Arlington students received scholarships through the program.

A number of high school basketball games were postponed late last week because of weather issues, but some games were still played.

The Wakefield boys (8-4) lost at home, 56-43, and the girls (6-4) fell on the road, 57-42.

The Wakefield boys were tied with Marshall at 13 after one quarter, then never led, trailing 29-19 at halftime and was behind 45-32 after three periods.

A’Mari Cooper had 12 points for Wakefield, Ben Horsford scored eight, Chris Warner seven and Gabe Tham and Robbie Starkey six each.

Group of Yorktown Rowers Set World Record A Staff Report

There were 10 rowers from Yorktown High School who established a worldrecord time for rowing one-million meters in a continuous relay shortly before the new year.

HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP Some were members of the Yorktown boys crew team and others were students. The Million-Meter Challenge was a grueling physical and mental endeavor officiated by Concept 2, a manufacturer of indoor rowing machines.

The Yorktown group made its attempt in the small team 19-and-under heavyweight event.

The individual rowers were organized

into squads to take turns in six-hour shifts. Starting at midnight on Dec. 29, they rowed without interruption, transitioning between rowers, while the wheel of the single rowing machine continued to spin. They successfully reached the million-meter mark at 8:15 p.m. on Dec. 31, completing the challenge in 68 hours, 15 minutes and 24.1 seconds.

Each of the participants rowed approximately 100,000 meters (more than 60 miles) in less than three days.

The rowers were Cal Birgisson, Jacob Fyock, Harrison Gardner, Owen Gorman, Elliot Kim, Jack Lacey, Derek Martin, Will Satrom, Ethan Schmidt and Calvin Wiese.

The more than $1,500 raised by the event was donated to California fire vic-

tims, an organization called Direct Action, based in Southern California.

Coming this spring on a Saturday afternoon in April, for the first time since the 2010 season, the Bishop O’Connell Knights and Madison Warhawks will meet in softball. The contest is set for 3 p.m. April 14 at Madison in Vienna.

What a perfect time to resume the rivalry. The perennial-powers are coming off standout seasons, capped by winning 2017 state titles at the highest classifications – O’Connell on the Division I private-school level and Madison in 6A public-school play.

The Knights were 27-0 last spring and ranked in USA Today’s top five.

Madison was 27-1, winning its final 14 contests. Each team is expected to return top pitchers and numerous key players, although O’Connell was impacted a bit more by graduation.

For many years, the teams used to play each season on a Saturday night at Madison. The contests were hotly contested, usually low scoring, and the teams traded victories.

For softball fans, the showdowns were must-see events. Crowds were huge. The bleachers were packed, with many more leaning on fences along each foul line or standing atop hills beyond the outfield fences.

The contests meant nothing in conference standings, yet certainly impacted local rankings and those proud bragging rights. The losing team had to carry that bitter taste for a year.

The rivalry ended to the disappointment of many. The excuse given was because of scheduling reasons, with Madison no longer being able to fit the non-conference clash into its limited number of games. O’Connell never bought that explanation.

With a coaching change at Madison a few years back and extra vacancies on this year’s schedule, the rivalry has fortunately been resumed.

Now, Wind has become a novelist.

On Dec. 9, Wind published his first novel, a science-fiction techno-thriller with scads of character development that is titled “The Man Who Stole the Sun.” It is available on Amazon Kindle, plus in printed version.

Wind got the idea for the story back in 2013 when reading a newspaper article while riding Amtrak to a board meeting in New York. For the next two years, he starting writing an outline, major plot points and story sequences of the novel as

he continued on those train rides.

Wind eventually took a two-year pause from writing the book. He began again late last fall because he wanted to find out where the story went and how the characters developed. He added additional characters and story lines, then published the book Dec. 9.

“It has been a lot of work and a fun ride writing this,” Wind said. “There are a lot of angles and educating the readers about things like quantum physics, chess and the Russian language. Plus, the novel is about love, betrayal, the importance of honesty, and I had fun with the names.”

In his novel, one of the runners in the marathon gets a fusion reactor on line the day before the race in a building near the start/finish line near Long Bridge Park, a mile from the Pentagon. Terrorists take over that building and reactor, threatening the race with a cloud of gas.

Wind first started writing in the sixth grade for an underground newspaper,

then became sports editor of his high school paper, and wrote in college for the University of Wisconsin‘s Daily Cardinal. He has been a technical writer for many federal and state consulting firms in the D.C. area, and for many years as well has written a running column for the Sun Gazette.

Wind actually began a first novel 16 years ago, but never finished after much of the material was lost when his computer crashed. He did incorporate back-story ideas and characters from the story into his current novel.

Will Wind write a sequel or another novel? “I’m satisfied with how this novel turned out and I’ve received a lot of good feedback,” Wind said. “I will wait and see if there is an interest or demand for my work before I think about writing another.”

“The comments were, I think, more on the length of voicemails rather than the amount,” Linda Erdos, the school system’s assistant superintendent for school and community relations, told School Board members during a Jan. 4 presentation.

Erdos said the message from employees had been received.

“We just have to learn to be very resourceful and limit the amount of time [of individual voicemail messages],” Erdos said. “Tighten up things.”

School Board member Tannia Talento suggested one option – finding a way to tell those who are listening to the mass messages how long they will run before the message starts, so staff can determine whether they have enough time to spend on the call at that moment.

Talento suggested she’s at times found herself trapped by a lengthy message

when she needed to be doing something else. Her proposal was turned over to the school system’s information-technology staff for review and response.

In her report to School Board members – given annually – Erdos touched on a number of matters. In general, from her perspective, the school system’s staff- and community-relations efforts are working effectively and efficiently.

“We have a lot of tools in place,” Erdos said. “We feel like we’re on the right track, but we can always do better.”

Principal Named for New Montessori Elementary: Arlington School Board members on Jan. 4 tapped Catharina Genove to be principal of the new Montessori-based elementary school set to open in the fall of 2019.

It likely will be an easy transition for Genove, who since 2015 has served at Drew Model School, half of which has a Montessori program.

The Montessori portion of Drew will relocate to the current Patrick Henry Elementary School when students of that school move into the new Alice West Fleet Elementary School (adjacent to Thomas Jefferson Middle School) at the start of the 2019-20 school year.

Genove will move into her new role on July 1, when she will focus on oversight of the Montessori program at Drew. A new principal will be hired for the other portion of Drew, which is slated to evolve

New School Board Member Receives Liaison Assignments: The arrival of Monique O’Grady on the Arlington School Board has caused a reshuffling of some

committee assignments among the five members of the elected body.

New liaison assignments approved at the board’s Jan. 4 meeting give O’Grady the following civic associations to which she will serve as liaison: Arlington East Falls Church; Ashton Heights; Ballston-Virginia Square; Columbia Forest; Fairlington; Foxcroft Heights; Highland Park-Overlee Knolls; Lyon Village; Maywood; North Highlands; Shirlington; Tara-Leeway Heights; Waycroft-Woodlawn; and Westover Village.

In addition, O’Grady will serve as School Board liaison to the Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth and Families; Arlington Special Education Advisory Committee; and FairlingtonShirlington Neighborhood Conservation Area.

O’Grady’s school-liaison assignments will be Abingdon, Arlington Science Focus, Claremont Immersion, Drew Model and Key Immerson elementary schools; Swanson Middle School; and Arlington Community High School.

O’Grady last May defeated incumbent School Board member James Lander in a three-way Arlington County Democratic Committee caucus, and went on to win a three-way general-election victory on Nov. 7.

Like all five School Board members, she holds an at-large seat.
