Lee Hwy. Effort Kicks Off in Fall County Board Chairman Says Redevelopment Is Key Priority SCOTT McCAFFREY Staff Writer
It’s been delayed, delayed and delayed some more. But, Arlington’s top elected official promises, the long-awaited study of development options along the Lee Highway corridor will be up and running by the end of the year. “This analysis is overdue,” acknowledged County Board Chairman Katie Cristol. “We aim to kick off this process in November.” County Board members earlier in the year reinstated some of the planning funds that had been scheduled for elimination by County Manager Mark Schwartz in the fiscal 2019 budget, a move that will allow the planning process to move forward. Lee Highway (U.S. Route 29) runs in Arlington from Rosslyn to the Falls Church city line. It is an amalgam of zoning uses, largely small-scale commercial properties with housing found about a block or two behind them. Redevelopment to date has been sporadic and piecemeal.

The Lee Highway Alliance, a group formed to promote improvements in the corridor, is aiming for low- to mediumdensity mixed-use redevelopment with building heights that are tallest fronting the highway and then taper down as they move closer to residential areas. Improved “gateway” areas, updated signage, better landscaping, a range of housing options, better lighting, undergrounding of utilities and a focus on open space also are among the goals of the advocacy group.
