Acting at near record speed, perhaps in an effort to prevent opposition from mobilizing, Arlington School Board members on June 7

took action almost guaranteeing that Washington-Lee High School next year will have a new name. The unanimous vote all but assures Arlington will not be left behind as other communities across the nation strip names deemed

offensive by some from their public facilities. But it leaves open the question of the high school’s future name – and which other local schools might eventually face the same fate as Arlington’s oldest high school.

The 17th Circuit Court will have to wait a year to see a fourth judge sworn in, as funding for the position was not included in the biennial Virginia state budget signed this week by Gov. Northam. The General Assembly and Northam earlier in the year agreed that the 17th Circuit – which includes Arlington and Falls Church – could return to a fourjudge body for the first time in six years.
