Leaders of civic associations ringing Virginia Hospital Center are engaged in an effort to beat the clock, attempting to win further design concessions to

the hospital’s development plan before it obtains expected County Board approval. “I believe a deal can be made [so] the communities can be happy,” said Alexandra Bocian, president of the John M. Langston Civic Association, who repre-

sents one of three neighborhoods surrounding the hospital. The hospital’s plan to extend its campus north, to property currently owned by the county government adjacent to North Edison Street, is expected to come before the Planning Commission

and then County Board in early July. Approval of the plan is a precursor to a long-anticipated land swap between the hospital and the county government, which would receive a large tract on Continued on Page 20
