Even After Being Selected in NFL Draft, Community Still Comes First for Stewart DAVE FACINOLI Staff Writer
M.J. Stewart was inside the Langston-Brown Community Center near his Hall’s Hill neighborhood the night of April 27 when word came. It was via cellphone that the Yorktown High School and University of North Carolina graduate learned that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had picked him in the second round of the NFL

draft. “I am ready,” the 6foot, 205-pound defensive back and punt returner said as he waited to learn his fate. He becomes the first Yorktown High School alumnus to be taken in the NFL draft, where he was the 53rd overall selection. “I have done all I can to prepare myself to play in the NFL,” Stewart told the Sun Gazette. “Now
Every great journey starts with a single step, and every great political career begins with the first voter convinced to cast a ballot for a particular candidate. Only this time, it’s not a certainty which of the Democratic contenders for County Board got it. A whopping one voter turned up on April 27, the first day of absentee voting in the June 12 primary that will decide whether Matt de Ferranti or Chanda Choun becomes the Democratic nominee to take on independent board member John Vihstadt in November. than Republicans, as there were no first-day voters in Arlington in the GOP’s U.S. Senate primary that pits E.W. Jackson, Nick Freitas and Corey Stewart against one another. In-person absentee voting will continue through June 8 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the county elections office, 2100 Clarendon Blvd., as well as on Saturday, June 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Absentee ballots also can be cast by mail. (For information, see the Web site at https://vote.arlingtonva. us/absentee/.) May 21 is the deadline to register to vote in the June primary. Those who are 17 years old now but will be 18 by the general election can Continued on Page 22
Still Waiting on Country-Club Deal Deal, or no deal? That is the question. Signals last week continued to point toward an agreement between the Arlington County government and local country clubs on real-estate tax assessments, but as of the start of this week, no agreement had been confirmed. See www.insidenova.com/news/arlington for updates as the situation unfolds.
