EVHS, CCHS embrace STEM through derby

Eastern View and Culpeper County high schools are “making” their way into the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby.

Eastern View’s Maker Space club created two adult soap box derby cars earlier this spring and unveiled them at the annual gravity challenge where regional schools compete against each other.

Soap Box Region 8 education coordinator Frankie Gilmore reached out to EVHS Maker Space co-coaches Heather Glick and Lisa Lisa Ann Richardson Groves in early April to see if they would be interested in building an adult car for the Piedmont Downhill - the corporate challenge hosted by the Piedmont Area derby in the fall.

Instead, the club went to work and churned out the derby car in about two weeks.

“It was amazing,” Glick said.

About 10 students, out of the 15 in the club, participated in the challenge.

Led by Kendrick Jenkins and David Barrett, the club met whenever they could to finish the project.

“We put it in front of the kids and told them we only had a couple weeks, we asked them if they wanted to get this done and they said ‘absolutely,” Glick said. “Everyone took a different role.

Every spare minute they had, they were coming to the library to work on the cars.”

Glick said it was a total team effort as everyone came together to build the cars quickly and efficiently.

“For them I don’t think it was (hard),” Glick said. “It was all hands on deck and they jumped in. That’s just the kinds of kids we have in our maker group.”

The group meets every Monday from 11 to 11:30 a.m. during the school year and they’ve completed other community projects - including building the mini golf holes for the Culpeper County Public Library’s 25th anniversary earlier this year. They have students who work on artistic projects and others are interested in engineering and work on drones donated by Germanna Community College.

Gilmore said it was amazing to see the high school kids step up the challenge and said CCHS will build their cars at the start of the new school year and have them ready for the Piedmont Downhill.

The annual gravity challenge pits school sponsored teams - and now church sponsored teams - against each other.

Culpeper County Public Schools had two teams from Culpeper Middle School and teams from Floyd T. Binns Middle School, Sycamore Park Elementary School and Pearl Sample Elementary School.

Sue Jenkins, Instructional Specialist Math/Science Culpeper County Public Schools, watched as students raced down the hill and then excitedly reported their results to advisors.

“It helps the kids be able to apply their knowledge and see how it works in real life,” Jenkins said. “That’s the best connection, to what happens in real life.”

Jenkins said she watched the EVHS club work on their car through their Twitter feed.

“It’s really good to see it extend,” Jenkins said. “Some of them may have been connected with the derby in their middle school and elementary years and now to see them use their science and math they have gained through the school system to continue this interest.”
