Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: Growing in each position I’ve held. From coaching swimming to my position at Ruth’s Chris and then Creighton Farms, I’ve worked hard and had incredible opportunities. Moving from an entry-level position to one of management and sales, especially [at Creighton] taught me a lot. Most significant charity work/community involvement: I’ve hand-delivered baskets to women who were waking up from their mastectomy. It’s an incredible feeling being able to deliver a tangible good in person to someone who’s already been through so much. Personal background and family information: I am a proud K-12 Loudoun County public school student! I have one younger sister who’s following in my George Mason University footsteps. Person you admire the most and why: Mom! After being a teacher’s assistant for almost 10 years, she went back to school to get her BA for elementary and special education – all online. Even though she technically “graduated” in December, my family and I pushed her to walk across the stage. We took a weekend trip to Arizona, and it was well
Professional accomplishment of which you are most proud: During the 20122013 school year, I had the opportunity to serve as the principal of Frederick Douglass Elementary School during our charter year. This was an amazing opportunity because of the deep historical roots of Frederick Douglass Elementary. It is an honor and privilege to be the principal of FDES.
worth the jet lag. One piece of advice for other young professionals: I have a block at my desk that says “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” I didn’t always heed my own advice; I really lost out on the work-life balance. Don’t settle for less but learn how to juggle your daily life—in the office and out. Someone very dear to me, and much wiser, tells me all the time to “stop, listen, think and react,” and also emphasized taking time to “smell the roses.” Favorite app/program on your smartphone: The little green phone icon, since that’s what it is, right? My friends know I prefer voice chat over texting…I’m always picking up the phone to call instead. I think a lot of this world is lost on text and email. Okay, all seriousness aside, I do enjoy Instagram – I love being able to document my adventures in the kitchen and special times with friends.
Most significant charity work/community involvement: My family and I are members of Leesburg Presbyterian Church, and this year I will serve as the assistant den leader of my son’s Cub Scout Pack. Personal background and family information: I earned a bachelor of science from SUNY Fredonia in elementary education and a master’s degree from Shenandoah University in educational leadership. I have spent my entire 17-year career in Loudoun County. My wife, Krista, and I reside in Leesburg with our two children.
I saw the courage he had to lead a school during a challenging time. It is evident that his love for educating children motivated him to put all of his efforts into his school. One piece of advice for other young professionals: I would encourage people to learn from the experience and knowledge of their colleagues. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by remarkable educators who have taught me a great deal. Favorite app/program on your smartphone: ESPN.
Person you admire the most and why: I met Mr. Drummond, former principal of Frederick Douglass, when I was appointed as the principal of Frederick Douglass ES.
