Social media 'played a huge role' in 2017 elections ➤ Party affiliation also enters local contests for the first time this election

With the 2017 election cycle having wrapped up last week, one of the popular topics between the public and candidates was the role of social media in this year’s local election.

Following the 2016 presidential election where social media was a polarizing topic - this year’s local elections followed suit.

In the biggest upset of the election, challenger Marshall Keene defeated incumbent Elizabeth Hutchins for the Stevensburg District School Board seat.

Keene was extremely active on social media, utilizing Facebook from the start of his campaign in the spring to advocate for his main issues in the race - the ability for school resource officers to be armed and the bus driver shortage Culpeper County faces.

Almost daily, Keene had a post on Facebook discussing his stance or alerting constituents where he could be found to talk about the issues. The use of social media was a direct way to communicate with parents, he said.

“I think it played a huge role in it,” Keene said. “I think social media is the new form of reaching voters.”

Facebook, when it was first introduced, was used primarily by the younger generation. Keene notes that many of those have “graduated” to adulthood and still utilize the platform. His ability to inform, communicate and engage on Facebook helped him win the district, he said.

“The big thing I learned with my Facebook page, whether people agreed or disagreed with my ideas, they always came to my page with an open dialogue and they knew I’d give them a response,” Keene said.

The dialogue extended to his opponent, Hutchins, who said that her interactions with social media

haven’t always been positive but it allows her to communicate knowledge others might not be privy to.

“I think social media plays a role in any election, there’s no way to get around it,” Hutchins said. “Having experience with social media on school issues, sometimes people don’t get all the facts and that’s unfortunate.”

Keene and Hutchins sparred on Facebook often, with Hutchins directing people to contact her if she felt the information was being misrepresented.

“I think it was a mixture of both (of people believing what was written and others asking for more information), more folks simply took what was out there,” Hutchins said.

“I had some people who said their minds had been changed after talking to me. I know I changed some votes with conversation.”

Keene was constantly responding to his opponent’s conversation, usually with a mount of information he had gleaned from Freedom of Information Act requests.

“I did respond to them and I followed them up with facts,” Keene said. “I was able to prove where those facts came from. I provided FOIA requests from the school system themselves. With social media you have to be careful with words, but you have to be able to back up what you’re saying.”

He said he intends to continue to use social media as a school board member.

“I will not shut down my Facebook page, it’s the easiest and most effective ways to communicate with parents,” Keene said.

During the school board forum on Oct. 26, Jefferson District candidate Michelle North (who was running unopposed and was re-elected) commented on the social media aspect of the race.

“One thing that has brought me great concern is the use of social media in this election cycle,” North said. “It has not brought out the best in our community. board candidate. Unfortunately I’ve been the recipient of some of that behavior. This is unacceptable and our community deserves better than this.”

Other candidates stayed with the more traditional route. Jefferson District Board of Supervisor Brad Rosenberger, who won over challenger Chuck Duncan, said he avoided online conversations. He advertised in the Voter’s Guide published by the Culpeper Times and participated in community forums.

Rosenberger ran on character and trust and he thanked those that showed trust in him.

“I just want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting me,” he said. “I’m humbled by the results and I look forward to serving you for another four years.”

In the Town Council Election, incumbent Jon Russell was the only candidate with a website and Facebook presence. He attributed that to helping him garner the second most amount of votes and being reelected.

“For me to get my message out, to communicate what I wanted to the public, it was very beneficial,” Russell said. “I can see how many people looked at it or it crossed their feed.

“It’s more the name identification. People get on Facebook and they see an advertisement or a post that crosses their stream. They just want to know what you’re about and if anything, just to know your name.”

Party affiliation within local races Another phenomenon this election cycle was the fact that Keene ran as a Republican.

Russell, also the chairman of the Culpeper Republican Committee, agreed that it may have been the first time he’s seen a school board member run with party affiliation.

“It’s an interesting dynamic, typically school board and town council you don’t run on a political party,” Russell said. “Marshall decided that’s what he wanted to do.

To his credit, some of that paid off.

He made an appealing case that it

was time for a change, and that was part of it.”

Keene said it was important to him to communicate to voters what he stood for.

“When I first started this thing, I wanted people to know where my party affiliation lies,” Keene said.

“It’s important for people to know what opinions are as far as my political morals and values and my moral compass.”

Russell said that while most local candidates don’t advertise or run on their party affiliation, most have one.

“I think everyone knows that even if you run as an independent in a non-partisan race, you still have party affiliation to some level,” Russell said. “It’s kind of the unspoken thing no one says but is there.

Everyone has a political bent, no one comes with a blank slate. Everyone comes with their own belief.”

Keene believes that his victory will lead to other local candidates following suite and seeking out party endorsements.

“I think it is going to be a blueprint,” Keene said. “Politics have turned around since the last presidential election. They want their local elected officials to align with political parties. They want to know how they’re going to vote.”

Another interesting note on the Stevensburg race was it was the first time since 2000 that the seat was contested. Hutchins had been the Cedar Mountain representative since 2001, but was redistricted in 2013. She ran unopposed then for the Stevensburg seat and won.

She wondered this year if the redistricting played a role in her loss.

“Last time I was unopposed, there wasn’t much of an issue but I’ve pondered over that and I think it was a factor. I’m on the outer edge of Stevensburg,” she said. “I was for Cedar Mountain, too, I was on the edge of the line for both of them. I think it was a factor.”

With all the different factors in play, it will be interesting to see how the local races in 2017 influence elections going forward in Culpeper County, with another national election looming in 2020.

CCVFD, Culpeper Police partner for Blue and Red Santa Project The Culpeper Volunteer Fire Department Co. 1 is also partnering with the Culpeper Police Department to help spread joy during the Christmas season.

Started last year, the Blue and Red Santa Project helped 122 children in the Culpeper community receive gifts last year, working through the Department of Human Services.

This year, CCVFD President Steve Corbin said he’s hoping to help even more children.

“How many kids we take depends on the amount of funds we collect,” Corbin said. “We’re trying to average $100 a person. Last year we were able to spend $130 per person. It’s all about the general public and local businesses, how much they contribute and how many kids we can take.”

There are several different donor sponsorships ranging from $100-$500 (Elf), all the way to a Christmas Angel ($2,100) or more.

The program begins with breakfast at the fire hall provided by civic organizations on Dec. 2 at 7 a.m.

Children will then be taken on a shopping trip to the Culpeper Wal-Mart, where an additional 10 percent is taken off the purchases for the kids. Santa will also be there to greet children and a school band provides a festive feel.

“It’s just a heartwarming experience,” Corbin said.

The theme for the Red Kettle Campaign this year is to Fight for Good.

The Salvation Army promises to do the most good for the most people in the most need.

Eighty-two cents of every dollar donated goes to support the lifechanging mission to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination. Donors of The Salvation Army provide utilities assistance, a food and commodities pantry, angel tree, summer camp scholarships, emergency disaster services, and a weekly youth program in Culpeper called Youth Downtown.

In 2017 donors helped 1,932 unique individuals by giving to the Army. This is a 9.21% increase in the number of people served over 2016.

Kettle sites this year in Culpeper include: Walmart, Safeway, TJ Maxx, Big Lots, Walgreens, the Post Office, and ABC. Kettle sites in Fauquier include, Walmart, Safeway, Giant, Walgreens, Dunkin Donuts, and the three Food Lions.

Puzzle Room Live tests residents problem solving skills

Culpeper will welcome its first escape room Friday.

Dan Glanz Jr., a Culpeper resident, decided to open the Puzzle Room Live, LLC after falling in love with escape rooms while on vacation with his wife.

“My wife and I probably did our first escape room about five years ago,” Glanz said. “We were on vacation in Nashville. They had one of the earlier ones in the states.

Whenever we travel around, we do different rooms and we really enjoyed it.”

Glanz, an engineer at Aerojet Rocketdyne, moved to Culpeper about a year and a half ago and saw a need for more entertainment.

Previously living in Orange, he had hoped to open an escape room in Charlottesville but was beaten to the punch. So after visiting and moving to Culpeper, it only seemed fitting to try the venture here. Puzzle Room Live will be located at the old Reformation Lutheran Church building (around back) at 509 S Main St. “For me it’s an interactive experience that you don’t have another opportunity to do, there’s nothing

It’s a great family experience as well, and he hopes children as young as 12 will be able to help their parents solve the problems presented.

“I want this to be family friendly, I want people to be able to bring their kids and not have to worry about them being scared,” Glanz said.

Puzzle Room Live features two rooms, “Uncle Bart’s Untimely Demise” and “The Mad Scientist.” In the first, visitors are tasked with finding clues to help solve Uncle Bart’s murder. In the “Mad Scientist,” players are pitted against the formidable mind of Dr. Helmut Conrad, a disgruntled biologist who has created a super virus to prove his scientific genius. Plays have to come up with an antivirus to save the day.

“The overall focus is problem solving,” Glanz said. “The genre can change, but the idea is to fix a bunch of problems to fix an overarching situation.”

The experience costs $20 per person and generally takes about an hour to complete, Glanz said to usually expect about an hour and a half with instructions.

“We want people to have fun, we don’t want people to feel like they are frustrated or they didn’t make any progress,” Glanz said. “If you make it too easy, it’s not fun either.”

Glanz, who comes up with the concepts on his own, said they plan to open another room after the first of the year and then switch out the rooms every six months.

One of the common complaints heard in Culpeper is that there is little for teens to do, and Glanz hopes this helps solve that issue.

“It’s perfect for teenagers for something to do,” Glanz said. “Culpeper has a lot going on for older people, but for younger folks there’s not a lot of other stuff.”

After a soft opening last weekend, Glanz said players were excited to come back and try again.

Puzzle Room Live employs six people, including Lindsey Broyles and her daughter Kaylee.

The Broyles family learned about escape rooms while on vacation in North Carolina and had to be part of the newest one in Culpeper.

“We were always trying to find stuff to do on vacation in Nags Head,” Lindsey Broyles said. “We did everything there and then we discovered an escape room and we fell in love. It’s the best family bonding experience ever.”

The Puzzle Room Live will be open Friday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The annual event honors residents who have demonstrated leadership in the stewardship of local soil and water resources. Where do bees go in the winter?

What happens to bees during the winter? Do they hibernate? What happens to the queen? How do they survive the cold winter months? These are questions people always ask.

Honey bees are very organized and work efficiently.

Each and every one of these small insects have a job and when born they know instinctively what their job will be in order to survive.

As the weather changes and it becomes colder, bees start to die off, the colony becomes smaller and not as energetic with their sole purpose being to keep the queen alive and healthy. With a smaller colony, they no longer have the ability to keep the whole hive warm and only concentrate on the cluster,

remember the queen is the priority.

They cluster the queen and use vibration to keep the cluster warm but how exactly are they able to generate that heat?

When clustering they need to be able to produce enough heat to keep the hive viable, having those bees on the peripheral allows them to insulate the cluster and reduce heat loss.

Those bees then rotate towards the center of the cluster. These are known as the heater bees. What is absolutely remarkable is that these bees can actually get their core body temperature up to 111 Fahrenheit, they can then burrow into an empty cell and thereby warm the surrounding cells and brood.

We have taken steps to move our hives back to our bee yard, we then take any boxes that are not needed so that the hives are smaller and the bees do not have to work so hard to keep their home warm. It also makes it easier for them to get

Having the observation hive in my shop is a little bit different because it is inside a nice toasty building, but they do get chilled if we do not take steps to make the opening of the tunnel to the hive smaller. They do somewhat cluster the queen and at times it is difficult to see her, they do become less active but are still phenomenal to just watch. The heat they generate

can be felt through the glass of the observation hive and people are incredulous that they can actually feel that much heat emanating from them.

Ignite Fitness, LLC hosted Drums Alive creator Carrie Ekins and COO Karen Watanabe. The duo led an Ability Beats class for those with social, emotional, and/ or physical disabilities at Culpeper Baptist Church.

Ignite Fitness Founder and President Sharon Gregory said that Culpeper doesn’t have enough programs that address the needs of individuals that face these challenges.

“By actively engaging participants while meeting their sensory needs, we can allow them to grow not only physically, but socially and emotionally during their time with us,” Gregory said.

Ignite Fitness offers the most unique activities and programs such as Drums Alive: Ability Beats,

a whole brain, whole body cardio drumming program made successful for everyone. Creative movement/cooperative games, relaxation techniques and laughter yoga are also utilized to help participants achieve stronger self regulating and coping techniques they can use not only in our classes, but outside the gym in everyday life.

Gregory has more than 30 years of physical education teaching experience as well as being certified in Adapted PE. She has also completed a six-month Inclusive Fitness Training Program called BeHuman to help her launch her new endeavor, ensuring that she has the tools she needs.

After witnessing first hand how well attended and successful the few Adapted Family Fun Nights have been at her school, she knew it’s time to take action and make her dreams of offering more for this population a reality.

“The goal of Ignite Fitness is to offer programs that will offer opportunities for individuals of all ages, all abilities to live active, healthy and happy lives,” Gregory said.

Reistat: Country needs to put veterans first

Veterans put our country first every day, on Saturday the country and those in attendance at Culpeper National Cemetery put veterans first.

During the annual Veteran’s Day Ceremony, Brett Reistat, Past Dept.

Commander, and Candidate 201819 American Legion National Commander, spoke of the importance of honoring and remembering our veterans.

“Heroes returned from Vietnam and were discouraged from wearing their uniforms in public places,” Reistat said. “Due to the disrespectful actions of some protesters and others who disagreed with policies that were set by our elected officials. Too often the protesters failed to realize it wasn’t a campus agitator who insured our first amendment rights, it was the military veteran.”

Reistat pointed out the sacrifices soldiers make when they enlist or are drafted. They lose quality family time, they lose a part of themselves to protect this nation and sometimes, they pay the ultimate

price.

“That’s what veterans do, they put others first,” Reistat said. “Today is Veteran’s Day, it is a day we put veterans first. Putting veterans first also means support and care for their families.”

Reistat said Veteran’s Day is not just a day to honor those who served in a time of war, but any soldier who have given of their time in the Armed Forces. They need to know they are appreciated and cared for when they return home, and sadly many are not. Reistat said that about 20 veterans a day take their own lives, and that is a number that can be prevented. He said that if you see a veteran showing signs of depression - help them.

Guide them to the services available. He also said the American Legion can help, guide them to a local post and help a veteran who has helped protect us.

“You don’t have to live in a military town to know veterans,” Reistat said. “Veterans are everywhere. It is up to us that every veteran feels the service to his or her country is appreciated by their fellow Americans. There are many tangible ways to acknowledge their sacrifice. The easiest is simply to

say ‘thank you for what you’ve done for our country.’”

Reistat said while those who have served in a time of war should rightly be honored and recognized, the service extends far and beyond as they help prevent engagements as well.

“The best wars are the ones that are never fought,” Reistat said. “We need to remember that war is not a mere history lesson, for them the battles continue even after the firing stops. We need to remember that veteran benefits are a cost of

war. ” Matthew Priest, director of Culpeper National Cemetery, said the Culpeper community has strong ties to its veterans.

“It’s truly a blessing to see the community come out here and support the national cemetery,” Priest said. “The selfless sacrifice all veterans and their families take for this great nation should not be unnoticed. On this Veteran’s Day and every day this month, I want to say thank you, thank you for all you do.”

The Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission is pleased to announce the launch of the Purely Piedmont label program, developed to promote the region’s locally grown food and beverages. Similar in concept to the state’s Virginia Grown program, producers who register their products with the program will receive labels with the Purely Piedmont logo to affix to their products, in addition to digital versions of the logo to incorporate into their own marketing materials. Displaying the regional logo allows consumers to easily identify our farmers’ products and make more informed choices.

The Commission released the Purely Piedmont brand and logo in May of this year for use on marketing materials for the current public awareness campaign being funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. At that time, a label program was planned as a follow-up project to the three-year grant ending in September 2019.

Due to farmer interest following publicity of the brand, however, the label program was fasttracked.

The program currently covers products grown within Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock Counties. Use of the logo is governed by both product and use

TOP PLAYERS. The CCHS Blue Devil thespians placed 2nd at the 3B Regional Competition on Nov.11. The group placed 2nd out of 8 schools and which earns them an opportunity to compete at the State Tournament on December 5th at Monticello High School. Also, a huge congratulations to Chad McKnight for winning best actor once again! The cast and crew will hold another open rehearsal for classmates and staff before the teacher talent show on November 21.

SECOND IN THE STATE. Congratulations to Eastern View Field Hockey, who finished second in the state. The Cylcones lost to Great Bridge 3-0 in the finals Nov. 11. Cassidy Morrison, scored the only goal in the quarterfinals against Chancellor and then scored again in the semifinals to send the Cylcones into the state championship.

CYCLONES ADVANCE IN PLAYOFFS. Eastern View defeated Patrick Henry High School 54-6. The Cyclones will travel to Dinwiddie to play Friday night. Culpeper also won on Friday night against Spotsylvania, 29-27. The Blue Devils will be traveling to Richmond on Friday night to play Thomas Jefferson High School at Huguenot High School.
