Early’s Carpet and Flooring adds room to grow

Entering their 51st year of serving the community, Early’s Carpet and Flooring is still growing.

The longtime Amissville flooring company recently finished a 1,184 square foot addition to the business, adding four offices for much-needed administrative space.

“It’s so we can have more room for the customers to sit down while we write up their contracts,” owner Lorraine Early said.

Early’s used to have a room upstairs for sewing and upholstery but that has become room for storage.

This addition will take the office space out of the showroom and add back in

a kitchenette that was taken out in 2013 when they put in a handicap bathroom.

The new offices will include the kitchenette, a board training room for employees and offices for Lorraine, the installation manager Solon Betts - her son-in-law and an office for their water restoration manager Tori Braley.

Early’s employs between 15-22 employees depending on the season, with the water restoration side of the company quickly growing.

“Five or six years ago we went into the water restoration part,” Early said. “When people have bursting pipes, flooding or backups we are on call 24-7 for that. That’s where my grandson, Ted Robson, is head technician.”

Early’s, as Lorraine and her husband John opened the business in 1966, and that now includes seven family members. Her daughter Sonja Betts is the manager while Solon does the installation, just like John and Lorraine used to.

The new addition showcases products Early’s sells, including a stunning wood, plastic composite flooring.

Flooring isn’t just for floors anymore, though, as some of the same product is used as an accent wall in Sonja’s office.

“We have always used our showroom to showcase our products,” Early said.

Early’s will be offering sales throughout the month of October, including specials on Mohawk and Karastan.

A Winchester man was killed following a one-vehicle wreck Oct. 3.

Virginia State Police responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 4 a.m. along Rt. 615 (Rapidan Road) at the intersection with Rt. 652(Mitchells Road).

A 2013 Hyundai Sonata was traveling south on Rt. 615 when it ran off the right side of the roadway just prior to the intersection with Rt. 652. The Hyundai crossed Rt. 652 and continued through a field and the struck a 2003 Chevrolet pickup that was parked in the driveway of a residence.

The operator of the Hyundai is identified as Louis Keith Milani, age 51, of Winchester, died at the scene as the result of the crash.

He was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol does not appear the be a factor.

Keen earns state lifting records, set sights on football

Mikey Keen is no stranger to records.

The 15-year-old Culpeper native is a five-time state champion in football, a national champion in wrestling and this summer he added more accolades to a growing resume - state records in powerlifting.

Working with Gold’s Gym strength and training Matt Stanton, Keen increased his bench press by 27 pounds, his squat by 75 pounds and his deadlift by 45 pounds during the summer.

A football player by trade, Keen was working to be ready for the season at St. John’s in Washington, D.C., where’s he’s seeing play on varsity as a freshman.

From the moment Stanton laid eyes on him, he knew he was a physical specimen.

“He started fast,” Stanton said.

“He’s probably the biggest increase I’ve had in three months.”

He set the state record for the United States Powerlifting Association at 352 pounds in the deadlift and 226 pounds in the bench. It was just another notch in the belt for Keen, who has high expectations and lofty goals when it comes

“Hopefully I’ll try to make it to a D-I school, study, get my education but the dream is to make it to the NFL,” Keen said.

Football is his number one love, but he’s proficient in other sports.

He’s a national champ in wrestling through the Mid Atlantic Wrestling Association and now he has state records in powerlifting. His mindset is he can do whatever he sets

out to accomplish.

“It’s pretty hard, you have to put in a lot of dedication and a lot of hard work but it all pays off,” Keen said.

He drew the attention of St. John’s last fall, playing for the Maryland Heat. Now a freshman, he’s seeing time on kickoffs and hopes to play at linebacker by the end of the year on varsity. On junior varsity, he’s playing running

back on offense and linebacker on defense. He was drawn to St. John’s in part due to their reputation, as they are ranked in the Top 25 in the country.

“St. John’s has good academics, the coaches are good and the team is good,” Keen said.

Keen had trained before, but he had never attempted a deadlift prior to this summer’s training.

He quickly took to it.

“When I started working out with Matt, I don’t think I had deadlifted at all and I found out I could go up there and break the state record,” Keen said. “It surprised me for how good I was, for having done it before.”

Keen has been successful in just about every venture. In addition to sports, he shows pigs for 4-H. “I love hanging out with animals and I love raising them,” Keen said. “That’s the one time of a year I get to hang out with my friends and have a showcase with them.”

According to his dad, Michael Leavell, Keen has always had the work ethic to go along with his talent.

“If he’s not first, he feels like he’s last,” Leavell said. “He can’t stand second place, he pushes himself. He has pushed himself since he was a kid. He and I spend a lot of time driving and putting in the effort. He sees something he wants, he goes and get it.”

While he’s motivated, he doesn’t forget his beginnings. One of the more striking aspects of talking to

the 6-foot-1-inch 15-year-old is his manners. Every question is met with a “yes, sir,” a trait that has been taught at home.

Stanton, a former football player himself at Culpeper County High School, said those manners set him apart.

“It was ‘yes, sir,’ after everything,” Stanton said. “I train a lot of kids and not many of them are as well-polished as he is.”

Leavell, who played football for CCHS, has been a tireless coach and cheerleader for his son.

“I’ve always told him I wanted him to be better than me and he’s surpassed me by 10 times over,” Leavell said. “Everybody that knows me knows I’ve done some bad things, so it’s nice to see my son learn from my mistakes and go to another level.”

The close knit family gets together every weekend, when Keen comes home from St. Johns. They attend church together and watch football before he heads back at the end of the day on Sundays.

“I cried like a baby the first three weeks,” Leavell said with a laugh.

For Keen, the work is never done. After a recent tough loss, he was ready to go back to look at the film and learn from his and his team’s mistakes.

“I have to worry about making my reads, keep up on my skills and go back to work,” Keen said.

Lake Pelham Connector Trail officially opens to the public

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer A public-private partnership has led to more recreational opportunities for visitors to Yowell Meadow Park and residents of the Lakeview subdivision.

On Sept. 27, the town officially opened and dedicated the Lake Pelham Trail Connector - a more than 1-mile bike trail that connects the back half of Yowell Meadow Park with Lakeview.

The process began in the spring of 2016, Mayor Mike Olinger said, as town planning and zoning staff met along with the Lakeview Homeowners Association to discuss a multi-use trail that would connect Yowell Meadow Park to portions of Lakeview.

The trail ties into the townowned property at Lake Pelham, which is currently under construction for a new dam.

“These meetings led to a publicprivate partnership,” Olinger said.

Lakeview’s Homeowner’s Association donated $75,000 to make the project possible. Olinger also praised town staff, especially Gary Wise and his crew, for clearing and preparing the base for asphalt, which was completed last winter.

“All of this would not have happened without council and the town manager’s foresight and vision to allow this project to come to light,” Olinger said. “This project truly exemplifies the power of public-private partnerships.

Peter Reuvtin, Lakeview HOA President, said members of the

association asked for more recreational opportunities during a survey the HOA distributed in 2013.

“About 2 or 3 three years ago we started talking about building walking trails owned by the HOA,” Reuvtin said. “In turn the town had similar ideas for the areas down here. We had money to invest by strengthening our financial position. The town has long term resources for maintenance and legal support.”

Reutvin, who has been president of the HOA for three years and on the board for 11, said that at first the HOA had to establish itself before contributing funds to projects such as this one.

“Back 11 years ago, we had to work to stabilize the internal operations of the HOA,” Reuvtin said.

“It was a very young organization. We built up over the years to have better process infrastructure.

Building up reserve funds for these types of efforts.”

Other projects the HOA are planning include a satellite park off Fairview Drive and improvements to Lakeview Circle. The HOA is also partnering with the town on a public park located near the new dam at Lake Pelham.

Fall happenings in the hive

The seasons are changing; fall is finally here! As the weather cools, you may not see as many honey bees foraging about, as their work is shifting from outdoor activity to in-hive activity.

Here’s what’s happening: The summer forager bees have literally worked themselves to death collecting enough food for the hive to successfully overwinter. These worker bees are quite protective of the 50-60 pounds of honey they’ve collected and stored, and none will go to waste. This includes the feeding of unnecessary occupants, namely the male drones. Although drones are key in reproduction of the species, they are not contributors to the day-to-day winter operations of the hive. Therefore, as the chill sets

in, female workers will mercilessly kick the drones out, so as not waste valuable honey. No worries, more drones will be produced by the queen in spring so that they can continue their dual purpose of mating with a queen and raising overall morale of the hive.

The new generation of worker bees, or winter workers, will now take over.

Their sole purpose is to see the queen through to the next season.

Amazingly, these winter bees are genetically altered to survive the next 6 to 8 months (not mere weeks like the summer foragers), and will live to see the queen through the spring brood-rearing season.

Their bodies contain a compound that helps store food reserves to better resist the cold. These bees will collectively form a “cluster” around the queen, which will ebb and flow as outside temperatures change to maintain her at a constant temperature of 92 degrees Fahrenheit.

This cluster of bees will move

around the hive, consuming honey stores as they go. It is not uncommon, though, for the cluster to become stranded and unable to reach honey stores because outside temperatures are too frigid and the honey is too far away from the cluster.

This brings devastating consequences to the survival of the hive.

What we can do: Our beekeepers have an important role in assisting the survival of the hive over winter.

Beekeepers often have an Autumn “to do” list for this reason. Most importantly, they ensure that the hive is full of enough honey to last through spring, and will supplement with concentrated sugar syrup as needed. It is also important to have the hive equipment properly arranged so that the honey is accessible to the bees all winter and arranged in such a way as to promote dense clustering around the queen. The hive entrance must

be protected from mice and other intruders with an entrance reducer and mouse guard. Tilting the hive forward and adding a top entrance will provide proper ventilation, and protection from moisture and mold growth. By early fall, beekeepers have already treated for mites and other diseases to ensure a healthy hive going into winter. So please, next time you see one of our local beekeeper friends, thank them for all they do to ensure the winter survival of our honeybees!

The 10 most common pregnancy myths

When it comes to pregnancy, everything from web articles to books, to relatives and strangers have advice for mom on the do’s and don’ts.

Some of the advice may be pretty sound, but some of it is nonsense.

With all the pregnancy “advice” out there, it’s hard to know what – or whom – to believe.

Dr. Alta DeRoo of UVA Obstetrics and Gynecology, a department of Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center gives us her take on 10 of the most popular pregnancy myths.

1. Skip the coffee. “One 12-ounce cup of coffee a day is perfectly fine,” DeRoo said. “Caffeine in moderation has never been shown to be dangerous in pregnancy, just don’t drink the whole pot! Generally try to limit your intake to 200 mg of caffeine a day, for example, a Grande coffee or two 20 ounce servings of diet soda. On average, an 8 ounce cup of green tea has only 35 mg and is a winner,” says

You can’t color your hair while you’re pregnant. “Hair dyes and perms and things like that are completely fine, though we usually tell people to wait until after the first trimester,” DeRoo said. “The skin absorption of chemicals in hair dye is minimal, but make sure the space is well ventilated so you aren’t breathing in the fumes.”

3. Manicures are out. “Manicures and pedicures are no problem during pregnancy,” DeRoo said. “In any case, make sure you’re in a well ventilated space to avoid breathing in fumes.”

4. It’s okay to have a drink.

“No amount of alcohol use is safe during pregnancy,” DeRoo said. “The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends no alcohol during pregnancy. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is the leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities. There is no proven safe amount!”

5. You can’t fly during your first or third trimester. “This is simply not true,” DeRoo said. “If you have a low-risk, healthy pregnancy, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to

fly before 36 weeks. However, always discuss your travel plans with your doctor before booking a flight. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists discourages flying after 36 weeks.”

6. Say no to fish. “Fish that have low levels of mercury, such as tilapia and salmon, are actually good for women during pregnancy,” DeRoo said.

“Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are good for both mother and baby.” DeRoo suggests skipping raw sushi and avoiding fish like mackerel, shark, tilefish and swordfish, bigeye Tuna all of which are high in mercury.

DeRoo says, “In general, 1 to 3 servings of fish a week is safe.”

7. No hot baths. “It’s fine to take baths as long as the water isn’t too hot,” DeRoo said. “Avoid saunas and whirlpool spas which can raise your body temperature over 102 degrees. A temperature that high could become dangerous for both you and your baby.”

8. Don’t lift your hands over your head. “A popular wives’ tale says that if a woman lifts her arms above her head while pregnant, the cord could get wrapped around the baby’s neck,” DeRoo said. “You won’t do

any harm to your baby by lifting your arms.”

9. I’m eating for two! “On average, pregnant women only need about 300 extra calories a day,” DeRoo said. “That equates to a bagel, turkey sandwich or extra serving of meat, fish- or --pasta. Eat to your hunger, but follow your normal habits with maybe a little more snacking to get those extra calories in. Talk with your doctor if you feel you have a diminished or supercharged appetite.”

10. You cannot exercise during pregnancy. “Not true! We actually recommend exercise during pregnancy for 30 minutes a day, 5 to 7 days a week,” DeRoo said. “Regular exercise has many benefits in pregnancy, including decreasing the chances of developing gestational diabetes or delivering by cesarean section. There are some pregnancy complications where exercise is not recommended, and even healthy women may need to make some modifications so be sure to discuss your plans with your doctor,” says DeRoo. “We generally suggest

Novant Health UVA Health System opens second Baby Cafe Novant Health UVA Health System opened a second Baby Café on Oct. 4 at DeJa Brew Café in Warrenton.

Baby Café is a free resource for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to get support from International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) and to share experiences with other moms. No registration is needed and children are welcome.

This Baby Café location is the second in the Commonwealth and offered as part of the international Baby Café program. Sessions are held every other Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. DeJa Brew Café provides space for the Baby Café with free snacks and drinks for program participants.

Baby Café USA, established in 2011, is a national network of free breastfeeding drop-ins, combining breastfeeding information with a relaxed, informal environment where moms can chat and learn about breastfeeding from skilled practitioners and each other.

It is related to Baby Café UK, started in 2000, which currently assists over 100 Baby Cafes worldwide. Mary Laybourne, RN, IBCLC, a lactation consultant at Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center, facilitates the bi-weekly meetings at DeJa Brew Cafe.

NRCS debuts new grazing initiative Contributed report If you think cattle and quail don’t mix, a new concept in managed grazing may just change your mind. USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is now accepting applications for a unique program that focuses on establishing productive warm season forages to improve cattle production AND provide large acreages of prime habitat for ground nesting birds and other wildlife.

The Northern Bobwhite in Working Grasslands initiative offers technical and financial assistance to help eligible livestock producers implement various conservation practices to address habitat loss without taking their land out of production. Virginia will conduct targeted restoration activities throughout the state with a focus on the following counties: Augusta, Bland, Botetourt, Charlotte, Culpeper, Fauquier, Halifax,

CULPEPER CYCLING CENTURY • The Culpeper

County Parks & Recreation Department is hosting the 10th Annual Culpeper Cycling Century bicycle pleasure ride.

Approximately 350-400 cyclist are expected with the cyclists beginning their tour of Culpeper, Fauquier, and Rappahannock counties from the Culpeper Baptist Church at 8:30am. Cyclist can choose between the 30, 60, or 100 mile ride. The course will take the riders from the Culpeper Baptist Church out of town via Chandler Street, to Mount Pony. Please be sure that while you are out and about this Saturday, that you pay special attention to the cyclist on the roads.

Cyclists are coming from all over the region to tour our beautiful county.

Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, the Old Rag Master Naturalists, and the Town of Culpeper will conduct a planting day for a newly designed Pollinator Garden in Yowell Meadow Park in Culpeper, starting at 9 a.m. The public is invited to attend and assist with the planting. The Pollinator Garden will contain a variety of native trees, shrubs, and perennials to attract and nurture a variety of butterflies,

Open for Business! The sign, when it graces the brick Katherine Charapich and mortar storefronts lining a community, or is virtually hung on the website of a local business, is an indicator of healthy commerce.

The variables of healthy commerce also include laws that promote local business, favorable tax structures, products and services useful to a community, and a business foundation that protects the efforts of the business owner.

If an owner of a small business has the vision, the courage, and the perseverance to step out in faith and establish a business in a community, she should have confidence that there are systems in place to empower that effort. Trusting that those who write our laws and tax code will do the right thing, consider the statement above a call-to-action - that small businesses endorsed during an election cycle are supported. The following focuses on the foundation of the small business itself, and its succession – a building block of estate planning.

Though our business main street seems to be advancing in directions that promote opportunity that perhaps even a decade ago could not have been envisioned, the need for fundamental structures of good business remain essential.

Whether a community’s main street consists of brick and mortar businesses or an online presence, each is in need of a solid foundation. In addition to offering a product or service that is sought after by consumers, the planning stage of an effective business model goes far beyond hanging a shingle. A business should become a formal entity. A consideration of identifying an entity that works well for a business is the protection against liability - constructing a wall that makes it very challenging for someone to reach over and into personal assets.

If you anticipate your business as being part of the stream of commerce by offering a product, or if you are providing a professional service, protect your interests - protect your assets.

Consider forming a limited liability company, better known as an LLC. The laws that govern LLCs are set forth in § 13.1-1000 et seq. of the Code of Virginia. LLCs are considered a hybrid between a "partnership" and a corporation. An LLC provides the benefits of limited liability, as well as pass-thru taxation.

There are some who, when considering the formation of an entity such as an LLC, take a wrong turn at this point in the decision making process. At first glance the purchase of an insurance policy seems sufficient, and they don’t pursue a formal entity.

Purchasing insurance is an essential element to have in place when running a business; however, it does not take the place of a formal entity. It is the properly established entity that

helps provide the protection against personal liability.

As a business owner, a goal is to provide the best product and service within the four walls of your business, and not provide a window or door into your personal assets. For example, there are many “mom and pop” businesses that sell consumable goods, and they have no entity protection. A common, and very exposed approach is, “We have always done business this way, and we only sell to family and friends.” Unfortunately, they are family and friends, until they’re not.

Let me present you with a hypothetical scenario of when such an approach can go wrong – very wrong. The business has been run successfully for years, and the owners now have quite a bit of land, and savings for a rainy day. The business raises livestock, and sends the livestock to a plant, which processes, packages, and mails the end product to the consumer. During the processing of an order, a chemical got mixed into the meat, and the infected meat was placed into the chain of distribution. A friend takes very ill. The tide shifts; the former friend is now a victim. Your former friend’s attorney is looking for answers. What protections did you have in place so that it is just the processing plant and not you, that answers for its negligence? Did you have a contract in place with the plant? Did you have a contract in place with the consumer? Did you give a personal guarantee? Better question - was it your LLC that had contracts in place with all of the parties, so when

Rosenberger, doesn't share Chuck's conviction about policy. In the mosque case he ignored policy by approving the sewage permit and Culpeper got sued, twice. With the noise ordinance in 2014, Mr. Rosenberger supported rewriting policy for the benefit of one citizen and to the detriment of everyone else.

The county needs a supervisor who will develop, promote and apply sound policy to support county decisions.

I first met Elizabeth when I interviewed to be the superintendent for CCPS. She was a tough interviewer, and I knew from the start that she knows education. Her questions were deep and to the point. She is passionate about all aspects of student opportunities and is actively involved, beyond her responsibilities as a Board member, in gifted education, the arts, and career and technical education.

Our first year together, 2009, was fraught with financial challenges.

Because of the economic environment, the funding for the school division was reduced by more than two million dollars from the state level. Mrs. Hutchins was resolute in the fact that tough decisions had to be made and worked to make the best decisions with the least amount of direct damage to students. Her work with the Board and administration allowed for minimal reduction in student programs. With this said, she will be the first to consider eliminating a program or

service if it is not having a positive impact on the schools and the people within.

I know no finer advocate for education. I hope the voters will carefully examine her successes and efforts for Culpeper County Public Schools. She is a voice you don’t want to lose.

You either know him as the Deputy who works at EVHS, the guy who does Behind the Wheel at both high schools, the Deputy who helps with the Sheriff's Sports Camps, or the parent who is always at school events talking to anyone who will listen to him and talk about anything while I'm

trying to go home. Imagine if your dad was the cop at the same high school you attended. His entire day involves around the schools and students.

I have first hand knowledge of my Dad's campaign. What intrigues me the most are the people who support my Dad. I have heard him say a million times, "Surround yourself w/ good people and everything will be OK"! I have heard state senators, delegates, School Board members,

parents, teachers and deputies stand up and say that my Dad is the best man to be Culpeper's next School Board Member. I'm proud of him.

My entire life every four years I watch my Dad stand up and publicly support who he thinks is best suited for Sheriff. I am standing up now for him. Please vote for my Dad, Marshall Keene!

Jon first turned down taxpayer provided health care for councilmembers. This only makes sense because council members are not full time employees and part-time employees of the town do not get health insurance.

Not long after that he voted to

implement ethics rules on the town council which forces them not to use town resources that the public does not have access too. Lastly he sponsored and passed a rule change which allows the public to speak at every committee meeting. In prior years, committee chairs could lock the public out from speaking during

those meetings.

When should you have surgery for a herniated disk?

The cervical spine includes seven vertebrae (Fig. 7), identified as C1 through C7.

The most common cervical disc herniations seen in my practice were at C5-6 and C6-7, with a few at C4-5.

Herniations of the disc at C5-6 will produce pain in the neck, over the trapezius muscle, over the upper the arm (with numbness and tingling), and, if compression of the nerve is great enough, a reduced or absent biceps tendon reflex at the elbow (the jumping of a muscle when your doctor taps its tendon is known as a “reflex”). The biceps muscle may also become quite weak because of the pressure on the nerve in the neck short circuiting the electrical signals to the muscle.

At C6-7, a herniated disc usually causes pain in the elbow and the lower arm, reduced or absent triceps tendon reflex (back upper portion of the elbow), numbness and tingling in the forearm and the hand, and possibly weakness of the triceps muscle.

If your doctor finds that you

have neurologic deficits (new-rowLODGE-gick DEAF-uh-sits)— numbness, muscle weakness, or both, indicating pressure on a nerve—surgery may be considered because prolonged pressure on any nerve can cause permanent weakness and numbness. Sometimes, unfortunately, the nerve damage persists even after pressure on that nerve is relieved.

What should you expect from surgery for a single herniated cervical disc causing neurologic changes? Results can range from quite good to excellent.

The operation is usually performed from the front of the neck, where the discs can be more easily approached and removed. The entire

disc is removed, and the surgeon can see the offending disc fragment compressing the nerve and remove it as well. To keep the nerve tunnels, the neural foraminae (new-ral forAY-men-aye), open and to avert any further irritation of the nerve, the surgeon will insert bone fragments (Fig.8) and possibly metallic plates to stabilize them and eventually fuse two vertebrae together. This bone fusion is known as arthrodesis (arthrow-DEE-sis).

In deciding whether to have the operation, you will be told that any surgery carries the possibility of complications. But even though no one looks forward to an operation on his neck, if a herniated disc causes enough pain and disturbance in your everyday life, surgery is definitely worth considering. Ask your surgeon to tell you several things: l What procedure he plans Any possible complications What your limitations will be immediately afterward How long you will take to recover.

You can then decide whether to go ahead, although I always encouraged my patients to get a second opinion.

When stiffness of your neck gradually becomes apparent over a long period of time, the cause probably isn’t pure disc disease itself but arthritic changes in the facet

(FA-set) joints that are a part each vertebra and allow motion between it and the vertebrae above and below.

Over the years, disc degeneration and deterioration without herniation will occur in all disc spaces, and the slow loss of height eventually can cause an offset of the joints behind them, leading to degenerative arthritis with referred pain.

Referred where? You guessed it—the trapezius muscles. Treating this pain is a longer process, and while the pain may be substantially reduced, it can’t always be eliminated. Surgery is not often indicated for this condition.

Remember, then, that not all neck pain is related to a diseased disc, and true neck pain can usually be reproduced by certain neck motions.

There are certainly other obscure diagnoses for neck pain, but we’re focusing here on the most common pain patterns and conditions seen in an orthopaedic surgeon's office.

Next month, we’ll discuss some other neck problems not related to disc pathology.

Five hundred years and counting

October 31, 2017. According to the calendar it’s on a Tuesday. The day when both young and old alike will adorn themselves in an array of costumes soliciting for candy, and partying on the unofficial American holiday known as Halloween. But there is something even more significant happening on this date, and it all began five hundred years ago.

In a little town nestled in the Northeastern territory of Germany called Wittenberg, a certain monk, university professor and Roman Catholic Priest started a revolution that would change the history of the world, and his name was Martin Luther.

Luther, who grew in a rigid, discipline oriented household, was not raised for spiritual pursuits. His father, a mining manager, wanted his son to study law. But during a severe thunderstorm, fearing for his

life, young Luther prayed to St. Anne for protection, vowing to become a monk if he was spared. Luther lived, so his religious journey began. In his early years Luther never felt that he was good enough for God. He never believed that he could rise to God’s love and standards. But that all changed when he finally had the opportunity to study the New Testament in the Holy Scriptures.

After reading Romans 3:28, “For we conclude that a person is justified

by God through faith, not by works by the law,” Luther realized that we are saved not by works, but only by a free gift of faith in Jesus Christ. This finally freed Luther to live in God’s eternal love.

So, when the Roman Catholic Church began selling indulgences, an opportunity for people to literally buy for themselves and their loved ones the reduction of sin punishment and time spent in purgatory, Luther vehemently disagreed.

He didn’t believe that this practice followed the Word of God that we are only saved by faith. Believing that this was a false teaching, Luther wanted to bring reform to the

Church. This sprang him into action on October 31, 1517.

On the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany, Luther publicly nailed 95 Theses (discussion points) on why the selling of indulgences was wrong. All Luther wanted the Church to do was to quit this practice and follow the bible.

Since the Gutenberg Printing Press had been invented earlier, his words were printed and distributed all over Germany at the delight of his countrymen. Luther was looking for the Church to simply reform, but that did not happen.

Instead, the Roman Catholic Church threatened Luther and his teachings. When the feisty theologian refused to recant, “back down,” and stand alone on the Word of God, the Church excommunicated him, literally “throwing him out.” This whole period, known as the Protestant Reformation, changed the world forever. Some of the outcomes of the Reformation included; the birth of several new churches(denominations), the translation of the Bible in common, everyday languages, and a renewed

focus upon the love and grace of God which can be found in Jesus Christ. The Protestant (protesters) Reformation affected the entire political and historical landscape of Europe, and the new, discovered lands which awaited habitation and mission.

On this October 31st, as the children are counting and hovering around the candy that they want to stuff in their mouths, and as the night slowly fades, may we set back and realize that this day is not all about Halloween. But a great historical thing happened.

The beginning of the Reformation, a spiritual revolution, which not only influenced the world then, but continues to shape faith today. It’s been 500 years and counting.

Age: 14 Grade: 9th grade School: Culpeper County High School Hobbies: My hobbies include singing, foreign languages and cooking. I have been singing since I was in second grade, and I love to perform in front of an audience. I also spend time learning Portuguese, my mother's first language, as I believe it is important to learn about my own heritage.

Why I joined Youth Council: I joined Culpeper Youth as a way to give back to the community, and to improve my leadership skills. I believe we can make a huge difference in our town by getting our youth involved in current issues and fostering a sense of community.

Young people have so much to give and by including them into government and decision making, we are preparing our future leaders for challenges that lay ahead.

How to make Culpeper a better place: Culpeper is a wonderful town, and I am happy to be able to contribute my time volunteering and engaging in current issues happening around our town.

Que & Cruz Fall Festival set for Oct. 7 in Louisa Que & Cruz is back, the Fall Festival featuring professional BBQ teams, live music, food and vendors of many types, plus an antique car, truck and fire engine show. A variety of music and entertainers will donate their time to this charity event, with all proceeds going to pediatric kidney research at the University of Virginia.

The Q&C Festival will be held at Small Country Campground in Louisa County from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Oct. 7, and is open to the general public at $10 for

folks 10 years and older; kiddies are free. Prize-winning barbeque, ribs and many other varieties of food will be available from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. or more.

The Que…more than 50 professional barbeque teams will compete in this Virginia state-level competition, leading up to the national fall competition, the Jack Daniels national championship cook-off held by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Teams seen often on television will compete for cash prizes and the rights to represent Virginia at the nationals.

culpeper TREASURES GALORE. Doug and Becky Jenkins were sad with Clark Hardware closed a year ago. So they decided they would open their own store to fill the void, carrying antiques, collectibles, project pieces, some new products - such as Red Rider Wagons - Double J's held its ribbon cutting Sept. 30.

They want to bring personal service back to helping their customers, helping them find that special treasure. Located at 1300 Orange Road - the old Cherrry St. Builders and K & M Equipment rental site - the business is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. Call 829-2200 or visit them on Facebook at Double J's.

WALKING IN MEMORY OF RUSTY: The Rusty Bowers Suicide Prevention Coaltion hosted its annual Walk for Rusty Sept. 9.
