Reformation Lutheran Church senior job fair makes connections Staff report Reformation Lutheran Church's inaugural Active Senior Job Fair connected seniors with prospective employers Sept. 21.

"We experienced great success at our inaugural Active Senior Job Fair," said church administrator Heather Nungesser. "There were many different employers recruiting for equally diverse types of positions to fil.

"All of the participating recruiters confirmed that they will join us for future job fair events."

Nearly 100 potential employees attended with resumes in hand.

Nungesser said there was such a positive response, that two recruiting employers ran out of applications.

Nungesser said Pastor Brad Hales and Ingrid Gormly, leader of Senior Ministry, at Reformation Lutheran Church are so pleased by the outcome of this event, that they are already planning the next Senior Job Fair for March 2018.

Rappahannock renews Stuart Field lease; Recreation chair Makela resigns

The Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to renew the Rappahannock Athletic Association’s (RAA) lease of Stuart Field in Amissville.

The vote in favor of a five-year extension of the lease was recorded at a special meeting of the BOS originally convened to consider applications for a permanent county administrator.

That position has been vacant since Debbie Keyser resigned in July. Brenda Garton, the interim administrator, is leading the search for a candidate to fill the position.

Garton added the lease consideration to the agenda when it was learned that a decision had to be made on the lease by September 30. The next supervisors meeting, scheduled for Oct. 2, would have

been too late for a vote.

The county leased Stuart Field to the RAA in 2008 for 10 years with options to renew for two fiveyear extensions.

The facility is used by Rappahannock and Culpeper youth for baseball games.

More than two dozen people — mostly RAA supporters — attended the meeting, which appeared to surprise the supervisors.

The Visitor’s Center building, which is undergoing renovations, could not hold a crowd of that size, so the meeting was conducted outside on the lawn.

A Facebook posting last week by Amissville resident Page Glennie suggested the intent of the county supervisors was to get rid of the Stuart ball fields.

Additional rumors over the last week mentioned the possibility of the RAAC Community Theatre tak-

ing over what is known as the Ruritan building at Stuart Field. RAAC, which holds its performances in the more centrally located county seat of Washington, denies it was ever interested in taking over the building.

Commenters on the county’s email listserv, RappNet, Facebook and a Culpeper newspaper story pointed fingers at Amissville resident Ron Makela, chair of the of the Rappahannock County Recreation Facilities Authority. The RCRFA manages the recreation center across Route 211 from the Town of Washington.

Hours after the BOS vote to renew the lease on Stuart Field, Makela resigned from RCRFA. His letter resignation submitted to Garton read in part: “The County has owned the ‘Stuart Field’ property for 10 years and has done nothing to take advantage

of the benefit that could be derived from the old Ruritan building as a community gathering space for all the citizens of the County.

“This was a project I felt the RCRFA could take on, and at no expense to the taxpayers, finish the work that needs to be done and make it available for use by non profits, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, Commit to be Fit and through user fees to private individuals and groups.

“As a result of the vote taken on Friday, September 21 by the BOS, that opportunity is lost. I consider the vote to be a ‘no confidence’ vote in regards to the RCRFA and my leadership abilities and therefore tender my resignation effective immediately.

“I will continue my volunteer work with the many other county organizations I enjoy working with throughout the year.”

Hetmanski named president of Culpeper Medical Center

Maggie Gill, CEO, Novant Health UVA Health System, and Charles Barrell, board chairman, Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center, announced the selection of Jeff Hetmanski as president of Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center, effective Oct. 2.

Hetmanski joins Culpeper Medical Center from the University of Virginia Health System, where he served as director of finance and community operations. He also previously served as chief financial officer at Culpeper Medical Center from 2014 to 2016 and was responsible for all financial areas of the hospital.

“Jeff's tenure at Culpeper Medical Center combined with his experience at UVA make him an excellent fit,” said Barrell. “The board and leadership team at Culpeper Medical Center are excited about his appointment and trust that there will be leadership continuity as Jeff begins serving in this role.”

As president, Hetmanski will also partner with Novant Health leaders to leverage resources and expertise.

Age: 14 Grade: Ninth School: Eastern View High School Hobbies: I love any type of outdoor or physical activities and my favorite sport is basketball. I am also actively involved in my church's Youth Ministry at Mt. Olive Baptist Church where I sing in the youth choir and serve in the Usher Ministry.

Why I joined Youth Council: I recently joined the Culpeper Youth Leadership Program so that I could have a voice in the community and to learn more about our local government and businesses in Culpeper. I believe that we are the future and that we should have a say on decisions that are made that will eventually affect our future.

How to make Culpeper a better place: I believe we can make Culpeper better by having more leadership roles that youth can be involved in, more activities such as tutoring programs, sport events and fund raisers that will keep us working together because teamwork makes the dream work! As long as we work together and understand that we may not always agree on everything but as long as we keep an opened mind and be willing to work together, this community can and will grow to do even greater things that will make our future a GREAT ONE!

the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation (NPCF) presented an additional $77,000 in grants to 11 nonprofits in Rappahannock, Culpeper and Fauquier counties.

Created by PATH Foundation last year to provide funding for emergent community needs, Community Assistance Grants cover a broad range of causes.

This September round of funding will support a variety of social services, the performing arts, and more.

Hospice of the Piedmont received $15,000, the highest amount awarded in this round, to help its Center for Children and Center for Grief and Healing. Renowned as the go-to agency for grief and crisis care, the organization maintains programs for children and adults dealing with the loss of a loved one.

The grant will help fund critically needed counseling and healing sessions, all of which are provided at no charge.

The Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board says it was thrilled to receive $10,000 — the full amount requested — to create a loan fund that ensures participants in its Housing Choice Voucher/Rental Assistance Program don’t lose their assistance through no fault of their own.

Several Culpeper-based organizations were grant recipients, including Culpeper Literacy Council, which was awarded $6,700 for its Seeds for Success program to help young adults improve their basic literacy skills, as well as Culpeper YoungLives and the Museum of Culpeper History. In addition, three performing artsrelated organizations — Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, Windmore Foundation for the Arts, and Castleton Festival — benefited from grants.

George shares her story of sexual abuse with SAFE ➤ Second annual STOP event encourages women to open up about sexual assault

Anna George had never shared her story in public before.

On Sept. 22, she stood up in front a group assembled by Services To Abused Families, Inc. and took a deep breath.

“I was sexually assaulted when I was 14,” the strong, cheery 22-year-old said.

A recent graduate of Radford University, George was working as a server at a restaurant one night when she served two ladies in town for a conference. Karen D. Brown, Executive Director of SAFE, and Dawn Delacruz had a craving for wings, but they got a more than a meal - they made a lifelong connection that night.

George was at the end of a long shift and when she heard where the ladies were from, she asked if ➤ See SAFE, Page 5

It was a Halloween party eight years ago - she was 14 and a freshman in high school. Several of her friends planned a party, it was supposed to be just a few silly freshmen getting together for a good time. As it is in high school, word got out. What started as an intimate get together turned into a party. Then students of all grades arrived at the party and eventually alcohol made an appearance.

Met a junior she had previously hang out with before, he started to flirt with her “I was anxious and excited that this boy might actually like me, and I might end up with my very first kiss,” George said.

Later on the evening, he pulled her aside and said he wanted to speak to her alone upstairs. Being young and naive, she agreed.

“What started off as a friendly conversation ended up being confusing and frightening,” George said. “I felt uncomfortable and wanted to leave, but the answer no was not accepted. He proceeded to take advantage of a scared, young, innocent girl.”

That night changed George. A vivacious, energetic young lady pulled herself into a shell. She

told only her best friend, who she swore to secrecy. For years, she held this dark secret inside herself, even while the assaulter was a popular football player at her school.

“This night became burned, etched, a painful reminder of innocence snatched away too soon,” she said.

“It was because of this one individual I pushed away loved ones and I never felt so alone in my life.”

She pushed away her family, she pushed away God. Once strong in faith, she questioned why God would let this happen to her.

“My life started to spiral out of control after this night,” George said.

It wasn’t until six years later when she told her mother and her sisters that she began to heal.

Now, after meeting Brown and Delacruz, she was able to share her story at the second annual S.T.O.P event at Reformation Lutheran Church.

For George, it’s all part of the healing process.

“I think it’s really important to be able to share your story with others,” George said. “I kept this dark secret for such a long time, I want to be able to help other women and men out there. It’s OK to tell your story, you’re not alone and you can be who you want to

be at the end of the day. The person who did those things to you is not going to hold you back from the person you are.”

She praised the SAFE organization for being a beacon of hope for other women, and men, dealing with abuse.

“At the time I was in high school, back in 2008, I never really knew anyone I could have reached out to,” she said. “I’m from a smaller town, it’s not a bigger city. Even a small town like this, they have someone you can reach out to.”

She talked about “rape culture” and how victim blaming led to her wanting to hide her secret. A victim shouldn’t be blamed or judged on what she wears, or if she had a few drinks before being assaulted. The victim is not at fault, the assaulter is.

“It shouldn’t matter who they are, a normal person would not do this,” George said. “I want to be who I want to be, I shouldn’t be sexualized because I wear a certain outfit that I want to be comfortable in. I think that’s a really big issue now.”

Brown can empathize with her.

Her story is just as heartbreaking, but she too rallied from it.

Her mother was murdered when she was 6, her father remarried a year and a half later and she started to get molested by one of her step mother’s sons. She was later assaulted by an uncle and

then later in life was in a bad marriage. She since has remarried pastor Gary Brown, of Pilgrim Baptist Church, and now provides counsel to others who are assaulted. She called her meeting George a “gift from God.” She said that SAFE hears from women like George every day, and

by George speaking publicly it helps bring the issue to the forefront of the community.

Our phones are ringing off the hook every day,” Brown said.

“Every story is fresh. We don’t compare one story to another. We don’t judge for yesterday, we talk to them about today.”

Talking is key, Brown said. She calls it being “nice and nosy,” asking questions like “are you OK?” and “do you need help?”

“We have to vigilant, we have to talk, we have to educate,” Brown said.

George hopes that her story helps educate others. She worries about younger women being worried about being liked on social media and it leading to assault.

If her story can help one young lady not be assaulted, she accomplished her mission.

“I’m here tonight because I want to share my story and to confirm that you are not alone,” George said.

Can a young liberal couple of Hispanic descent move in next door to well-to-do “older” white Republicans and find, if not happiness, a friendly detente? Do good fences really make good neighbors? According to playwright Karen Zacarias, the familiar “primal and absurd” root of conflict that spreads like kudzo in local neighborhoods is not much

different when it appears across international boundaries.

This crackling comedy, set in Washington, D.C., ignited the audience with laughter at references to local neighborhoods understood to be upscale or just artsy but hip; neighborhoods where “those people” live. Directed by Blake Robison, “Native Gardens” begins with the differences and takes ninety minutes of steadily ramping antes to find a meeting place. A very pregnant Tania Del Valle (Jackqueline Correa) and her lawyer husband Pablo (Dan Dominues) have just bought an old house next door to the Butleys. Virginia (Sally Wingert) is an engineer, a deliberate can-do sort who has feathered a very comfortable career nest in the male-dominated defense field. Frank Butley (Steve Hendrickson), a bureaucrat at heart, satisfies a macho-driven competitive streak with his garden. Manicured, loved, symmetrical, Frank’s garden is not just a collection of carefully tended botanicals, it is his measure of himself.

Every year he girds his loins for the battle to win the neighborhood’s Best Garden Award.

Enter the Del Valle’s with their big, scraggly oak tree, dirt yard and languishing remnants of shrubbery. They have plans, of course, to tidy things up, and Tania earnestly lectures anyone who will listen on the benefits of “native gardens” – those happy plots of earth that grow only what the environment intended to grow.

But that’s not the problem. The problem is that before they can install a fence for the upcoming party that Pablo so ill-advisedly planned for his firm, they have to get a survey. And the survey shows that their property line extends into the Butley’s yard.

It’s a situation made for comedy heaven, and the jabs ebb and flow from strained insinuations to the insult direct to a garden hose used like an AK-47. But it’s not just slapstick with a happy ending. The ghosts of racial perceptions and class barriers permeate not just the scenes of allout warfare, but the restrained dance of privilege

and assumptions about privilege when the two families first meet.

The set design by Joseph Tilford joins the supplemental ensemble as a silent but essential character, for it sets out, in loving detail, the differences between the Del Valles and the Butleys before we even meet them.

Two respectable old brick houses, one raw, one painted; two back door lights, one in a tasteful cover, the other a naked bulb; and two yards separated by a falling down wire fence on one side, and a border of lovingly groomed flowers on the other.

As sharp as the comedy is, as well written and well played, the troublemaker in me wants to point out that the set-up, unlike actual life, carries the seeds of its own resolution within it.

All four of these people are well educated and well spoken. Pablo comes from an aristocratic family in Chile. Tania is a Ph.D candidate.

It’s easy to agree on how silly racial and class assumptions are when they aren’t all that different to begin with.

Ms. Zacarias gets kudos for a successful play, but if she ever really wants to explore this topic, she’s welcome to visit MY neighborhood.

Paris was popular Tuesday night.

The ferret climbed all over Victoria Hamilton at the FFA Culpeper County Agriculture Showcase, as visitors laughed at her antics and enjoyed watching the students handle her in the small animal petting zoo.

“You just have to love them,” Hamilton said, as Paris peeked out from behind her hair.

The ferret was just part of the showcase, which FFA members started putting together in August.

Students set up 18 exhibits, ranging from the small animal petting zoo, to a bat house project, to rat Olympics, virtual welding and tractor troubleshooting.

CCHS agriculture teacher Ted DeLano said the teachers helped guide them, but most of the students came up with their own projects. It’s that initiative and leadership that defines FFA, CCHS FFA

➤ FFA, from Page 8 “I think it’s a great way to involve and educate the community on the things that we do,” Myers said. “We try to educate about the future of agriculture, food security and community service.”

Living in a historically agricultural county like Culpeper, Myers said many of the members have grown up with farming, but there’s more to it than just your typical mom and pop farm these days he explained.

“Not only is it a historical part of it, but agriculture is the future,” Myers said. “Looking at the biotechnology and different uses of pesticides and herbicides that are used today that need to generate more food for the future. I think that’s a great part of why so many kids are interested in agriculture today.”

Technology plays a large role in agriculture now, he said, pointing out that GPS equipment can be used on tractors to plant seeds within millimeters of each other.

For Miller, who started in FFA because of his older sister, the fact that there’s so much more than just farming in the FFA is what appealed to him.

“I always thought FFA was you farmed, that’s all you did,” Miller said. “I quickly realized it’s so much more than just farming. We have computer application, there’s so

much technology. I just love it.”

The duo were explaining to visitors issues that farmers and the agriculture industry face, and the solutions that the next generation have helped come up with using technology.

“Recently there’s been a decline in how much profit agriculture is making,” Miller said. “They’re developing new ways to make more money. There’s a lot of research going into this.”

Miller said there are close to 100 members in FFA at EVHS and said that many get indoctrinated with the animal sciences class but quickly learn that FFA has much more to offer.

“You just see how much stuff you can do. It’s just gets bigger and bigger,” Miller said. “You can see how it impacts your life on a day to day basis.”

Further down the hall, Emily Resau and Thatcher the service dog explained the importance of service animals and why they shouldn’t be interrupted with petting.

“I’m trying to teach them what service dogs are for, why people have to have them and why people aren’t allowed to touch service dogs,” Resau said. “Many people want to touch them, but they are a tool for the disabled person, so when you’re distracting the dog, you’re distracting their tool and they can’t work efficiently.”

While it started as a Girl Scout project, it dovetailed nicely with her involvement in FFA. “It ties well into FFA because it’s a dog so it ties in with animals,” Resau said with a laugh. “A lot of people in FFA are already interested in animals, so it’s easier for them to be interested in this topic.”

She’ll train Thatcher for 18 months, and she will go train with his new owner in August. He will officially be a serviced dog when she’s two years old.

Just up the way, another dog was being groomed and loved on by FFA members.

Destine Washington and Jonathan Azenon pampered Brody, a 8-year-old labradoodle that frequently visits the class.

His owner, Kimberley Ellis, said he loves the attention and affection he receives from the FFA members.

Tuesday was the first time he was out in a crowd with the class, however, he seemed to enjoy being the center of attention as he was groomed.

Ellis said she was happy to help with the showcase and thinks it was a great idea.

“I absolutely love it,” she said.

The charitable PATH Foundation has opened its Annual Program and Planning Grants cycle, with a total of $750,000 available for this upcoming 2018 grant cycle.

Those Rappahannock County organizations that plan to apply for grants must submit a preliminary application — known as a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) — no later than Friday, Nov. 3.

Bear in mind that the LOI to be submitted by Nov. 3 is just a preliminary proposal submitted through the foundation’s online grant portal. If accepted, applicants will receive an invitation in late January 2018 to submit a full application.

Full applications will be due Feb. 26, 2018, and award recipients will be notified in June 2018. Successful grantees must use funding within one year of award.

PATH’s 2017 grant beneficiaries in Rappahannock County included Foothills Forum (to explore critical health and transportation issues for the county’s aging population, which appeared as a recent series in the Rappahannock News); Headwaters Foundation (to provide an after-school enrichment program for Rappahannock County Elemen-

tary School); Rapp@Home (to help the county’s senior residents stay connected and live independently in their homes); Rappahannock County High School (to continue its PRIDE program encouraging positive social behaviors); and the Child Care and Learning Center (for child wellness and educational purposes).

PATH Foundation’s Annual Program and Planning Grants are 12-month grants for new or existing projects related to one or more of the foundation’s four priority areas: access to care, childhood wellness, mental health, and senior services.

Applicants may request funding for up to $100,000, though most grants will be lower.

Eligible grant applicants include 501(c)3 non-profits, religious institutions (for non-religious purposes) or local government entities in Rappahannock, Fauquier and northern Culpeper counties. From addiction to hope FROM THE DESK OF

The addiction crisis, and specifically opioid addiction, has hit Virginia and the 30th District hard.

Lives have been lost and families have been torn apart by this addiction which claims people from all walks of life and all ages.

Last session we worked to reform how opioid medications were administered with the intent of preventing over proscription of addictive drugs. We have also worked to make NARCAN available to local law enforcement and first responders in order to prevent overdoses from taking more casualties in our community.

These are positive steps, but more is needed.

Talking to first responders, medical personnel, counselors and law enforcement from all over the district and state, it is obvious that we are not going to “arrest” or “incarcerate” ourselves out of this problem. Felony convictions for drug use, which stay with you your entire life, can contribute to

the environment of hopelessness which addiction feeds on. One of the things that is desperately needed is more access to effective, long term treatment as an alternative to incarceration.

So what is the government’s role in this process? Like I said, we can’t arrest our way out of this problem, nor can we simply spend our way out of it.

If we’re serious about truly eradicating this, than we don’t need another cumbersome government program. What we need is to tackle this issue as families, friends and as a community.

One group in Culpeper is doing just that. Pastor Mark Jenkins of Mt. View Church in conjunction with other faith leaders has decided that they are going to take personal responsibility for providing long term treatment.

They are currently gathering resources, and adopting best practices from other successful programs in order to provide an alternative to the incarceration that many addicts face. I am working with this group to see how we can assist. One of the biggest obstacles is a lack of treatment facilities and funds specifically ear marked for treatment. These are two areas

where I believe the state can help without continuing to over burden tax payers.

We have state facilities sitting empty which could be used for this purpose. We have prisons which currently can’t afford to offer long term treatment plans.

And we have money and property confiscated from convicted drug dealers that could be used for rehabilitation. In all of these cases coordination and some legal changes would free up existing facilities and funds to be used to support those organizations within our community that are stepping forward to assist. I plan to carry legislation next year that will make these existing resources available and cut through the red tape that currently encumbers these organizations from trying to help their friends and neighbors.

Instead of empowering bureaucracy, we will empower those groups which are already motivated and active in our communities so they can work in people’s lives to bring about the kind of change that will result in genuine healing and reconciliation.

A meeting at the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce’s annual Business, Industry and Education Day led to a generous donation to Culpeper County High School’s Culinary Arts classes. Rex Hancock, owner of Rixeyville-based 3 DIMENSIONAL CREATIONS, was asked by Chef Jay Cohen if he would consider making a donation of one of his laser engraved cutting boards to the culinary arts program. Hancock agreed, and last week delivered six laser engraved cutting boards – one set of three engraved with weights and measures and another set of three with cutting instructions. “It was just something that it gives an opportunity for the local businesses to contribute and help support the culinary program here and education in general,” Cohen said.

"My whole life," she said. For Pat, it is this lifelong passion and belief that is expressed in her work, giving us a collection of art that is filled with a lifetime of experiences: from her Irish-Italian heritage to her urban art school education, the laughter of her children, and the simplicity of birds flying south for the winter.

As a dyslexic, Pat's art is paradoxically a P. Buckley refuge and a means of communication. Very early in life, when she failed at everything Moss else in school, her art became her solace.

What talent she lacked academically was more than made up for through art; whereas some people succeed in spite of a disability, Pat believes she thrives because of her disability.

As a young mother Pat moved her family south and increasingly found inspiration in the imagery of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, becoming captivated by the life and culture of the Amish and Mennonite people of the area.

She embraced the local landscapes, lifestyles, and traditions

and felt that the life and culture she was part of held an important message for modern society: live simply and enjoy every moment!

Pat's art seems to "speak" a language that ordinary folks are able to understand. Talent, determination, intelligibility, a little luck, and lots of caring are all parts of the Moss phenomenon.
