Bright Spot Inclusive Playground still in need of donations

The Bright Spot Inclusive Playground is nearing completion, but more donations are needed to finish the project.

According to John Barrett, director of Culpeper County Parks and Recreation, the project needs funds for additional parking and incidental fees.

“The Bright Spot Inclusive Playground Committee is working diligently to close the funding gap,” Barrett said. "Still, there are needs that if realized will provide an all-inclusive facility that will have the community beaming with pride."

The Bright Spot broke ground March 11 and is slated to be finished in the fall. It will provide a swings for children with differing abilities while also providing regular playground equipment at the Culpeper County Sports Complex.

Barrett said the response from the community has been impressive.

“Community businesses and individuals that have been contacted for donations, have acted handsomely towards supporting the Bright Spot inclusive playground,” Barrett said.

“This is a total community effort, to create a play environment that promotes disability awareness and establishes a platform for children of all abilities to play together.”

Germanna recognized for campus police force Germanna Community College was recognized Friday as one of the state's safest campuses.

It became the first college in the 23-school VIrginia Community College System to be honored with State Certified Crime Prevention Campus status. The honor was awarded at Friday's first GCC College Council meeting of the 2017-18 academic year at the Locust Grove Campus.

Germanna is only the fifth college of any kind in the state to be so honored since the award's inception in 2014.

The Virginia Criminal Justice Services Board decides campus police work worthiness.

GCC Police Chef Craig Branch accepted the honor along with other college police staff, Germanna President Janet Gullickson and GCC Local College Board Chair William Thomas.

To be certified, a college or university must detail crime prevention goals, programs and accomplishments. A certified crime prevention campus must have 11 core safety elements and four electives; these include having a certified crime prevention

Franco Calabrese, co-chair of The Bright Spot Inclusive Playground committee and the adaptive physical education teacher at Culpeper County Public Schools said there was a definite need for the park.

“We’ve almost reached our goal,” Calabrese. “We’ve been lucky, we’ve had a lot of generous donations from people in the community.”

He cited a flea market fundraiser at the beginning of August that was well attended and help raise funds for the equipment.

“The number of people that showed up to the flea market just showed the willingness of everyone to see what’s going on with the playground and to see what they can do,” Calabrese said. “Learning what an inclusive playground is and spreading the word, it’s just been a positive response.”

Chief Branch said credit must be given to a lot of people, including campus police staff, the college's Threat Assessment Team and Germanna leadership's willingness to host events like summits addressing the opioid crisis.

"I feel safer just standing here," Dr. Gullickson joked as she posed for a photo with Chief Branch.

“I think the cool thing about the inclusive playground is that it’s truly inclusive,” Miranda said. “It’s a space for everyone. I think it’s going to be a great spot for anyone to use. Anyone can play, they might play differently, but they can all

play together.”

Sandy Bright, co-chair of the Bright Spot committee, said in March she was overwhelmed by the support the park has received.

“You know you hope that the community gets involved and the environment has been very good and surprising,” Bright said.

Salvation Army disaster teams have deployed in Texas following Harvey making landfall as a Category 4 hurricane.

The Texas Division fleet of 34 mobile kitchens will be joined by 10 units from the neighboring Oklahoma Arkansas Division along with an Incident Management Team.

In Corpus Christi, Salvation Army staff spent the night after landfall alongside first responders and law enforcement personnel at the FEMA dome. Led by Captain Patrick Gesner, the team served coffee and meals throughout the day. "We ventured out in the early hours and it appeared that The Salvation Army building was intact. We collected some extra food from our freezer and fired up the generator on the mobile kitchen.," said Captain Gesner. "We've already been serving coffee this morning and the police and first responders have expressed how pleased they are we are here."

The Florida Division has deployed two mobile bunk houses and two shower units to Texas.

It is expected that a number of mobile kitchens will be deployed to affected communities along the coastline on Sunday while others remain in anticipation of service needs in San Antonio where many evacuees have sought shelter.

State Theatre in foreclosure; auction set for September 13

Almost one year to the day that it abruptly went dark, the financially strapped Culpeper State Theatre is in foreclosure — set to go on the auction block Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m.

Few are as upset about the historic 500-seat theatre’s demise as the unnamed individuals from Rappahannock County who generously opened their wallets to keep the circa 1938 vaudeville-style showhouse afloat.

Although their identities are not known, the Rappahannock residents reportedly made a total of $5 million dollars in loans to the theatre on two separate occasions, once through a limited liability company, Melbell, LLC, which was organized on March 9, 2011.

“As the attorney that was involved for both of the lenders to the State Theatre any of my information is confidential and I wouldn’t be at liberty to disclose any identities with respect to Melbell, LLC,” Washington attorney Michael T.

Brown tells the Rappahannock News. “That’s the reason that was done through an LLC, so that the identity would not be a matter of public record.”

As is usually the case, this LLC lists as its address the representing legal firm, in this case Walker Jones Law, 211-A Main Street, Washington.

Quoting court documents, the Culpeper Star-Exponent reported last week that “a Rappahannock County couple made a $2 million loan to the State Theatre Foundation in 2012 with a scheduled maturity date by the following year. The repayment schedule was extended in 2013 to 2020, as the request of the State Theatre Foundation, and the creditor agreed so long as the loan did not default, according to court documents.

“We had hoped that with the changes in staffing, our new direction of diverse programming, and our community partnerships and educational outreach that we would be able to create renewed interest for the community and the region to provide the contributed income necessary to sustain operations. Unfortunately, while we saw a trend of positive results, we fell short of our fundraising goals to keep us moving forward . . .”

at the request of the Foundation, according to court documents.”

The newspaper says the 2017 real estate assessment for the restored theatre puts its value at only $2.68 million, even though a reported $13 million restoration took place in 2013.

Until it closed Sept. 14, 2016, the theatre was led by a volunteer board of directors headed by Jerry Whitlock (chair), Joseph Wills (vice chair), Gary Lee (treasurer), Elizabeth Hutchins (secretary), Alex Forte, Chris Hamilton, Don Haight, Mike Hudson, Octavia Yates, and Joe Grills (board advisor).

While Whitlock did not return phone calls, the board had numerous fundraising efforts underway at the time the theatre was shuttered, including tax-deductible donations, a preservation society, individual and corporate annual memberships, seat dedications, personalized engraved bricks, and sidewalk stars similar to those in Hollywood. The board also welcomed donations through estate planning. All of which, it turns out, wasn’t enough.

A multi-alarm fire discovered late Saturday night that burned well into Sunday has destroyed the Communications Corporation of America (CCA) printing plant just over the Rappahannock County line in Boston.

The good news is plans are already underway to rebuild while keeping as many of the CCA’s 300-plus employees as possible working in the process, perhaps in an offsite facility.

More than 200 firefighters from nearly

three-dozen responding fire departments, including every volunteer company in Rappahannock, battled what resembled a raging inferno against a darkened sky.

The fire, the cause of which remains under investigation, burned so hot that metal portions of the structure either disintegrated or melted. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported. All day Sunday a towering plume of smoke was visible from miles away. Rappahannock County realtor Trish Bartholomew said she could see and smell the smoke from Skyline Drive. ➤ See Fire, Page 7

➤ Fire, from Page 6 “It’s gone, nothing left,” said one downcast CCA employee, his head lowered to the ground as he walked through the thick smoke back to his car early Sunday morning.

In an interview Monday morning ahead of an urgent workforce meeting in Culpeper, the CCA’s owner and president Steven Fisher told this newspaper that he and his team were already “working on a strategy towards getting everything replaced.”

“The good news is we have a lot of money through our insurance company,” Fisher disclosed, adding that “millions of dollars worth of equipment” was destroyed. The large warehouse-style building had no sprinkler system.

“Did you see the black plume of smoke?” he asked. “It was just awful. It resembled a dark cloud. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.”

Nor had a Culpeper County Volunteer Fire spokesman reached on Tuesday. “I have never seen a fire like that,” he said, saying the cause remained under investigation.

The CCA and the stately Longlea Conference Center, a Catholic Church retreat, share the same brick entrance off of Sperryville Pike Route 522. Instead of an industrial setting, what still stands of the plant is surrounded by rolling green hills where private hunting invitations have been extended by the CCA. According to a Bloomberg business profile, the CCA is “a direct mail production facility [that] specializes in continuous form printing, data processing, personalization, finishing, and mail processing. The company offers specialty work, such as embossed and thermal plastic cards, notepads, address labels, and carbonless form impact printing.

It offers direct mail services to clients in the United States and internationally.”

A national Republican Party consultant, who had visited the CCA on several occasions, said “the plant was basically a print and letter production shop for direct mail conservative causes — RNC [Republican National Committee], NRSC [National Republican Senatorial Committee], NRA [National Rifle Association] . . .

“Have done a lot of work there and known the Fisher family for 25 years,” he said, “and a dear friend of mine works there . . . what a shock to read this.”

The CCA was founded by Steven’s father, John Morris Fisher, who was well known in White House, congressional, military and academic circles. He advised several U.S. presidents, and most notably won the praise of President Ronald Reagan.

“My idol,” Steven Fisher told the News.

The elder Fisher, who died at age of 90 in 2013 and is buried in Culpeper, was a decorated World War II veteran and former FBI special agent. He left the bureau in 1953 to become National Director for Security with Sears, Roebuck and Co. Two years later he became founder and president of the American Security Council.

In 1971, his obituary in the Washington Post stated, he founded CCA and served as its chairman until his death while his son, as the president, ran day-to-day operations.

Locally, Fisher was president of the Culpeper Hospital Foundation.

But he is perhaps best known nationally for developing the National Strategy of Peace Through Strength.

“To help accomplish this, he organized the Bipartisan Coalition for Peace Through Strength,” the obituary noted. “This coalition grew to include 231 congressmen, 42 senators, and 20 governors from both parties; 169 national organizations; 514 colleges and universities; 3500 member companies; more than 2500 admirals and generals; and more than 350,000 individual members.

President Reagan remarked of Fisher: “As an early member of the coalition . . .

I supported your resolution for a Peace Through Strength strategy, and it was incorporated as a part of the 1980 Republican Platform [when Reagan was first elected president].

“Quietly and effectively, your coalition,” said Reagan, “has made a great contribution toward restoring the credibility of America’s defenses. Your work on Capitol Hill and with the public at large has been a principal factor in returning America to the days when she was militarily strong and morally principled.”

The mower of the future is in Culpeper

A passerby stopped and stared.

Along the grass outside Gary’s Ace Hardware, a sleek, almost-Batmobile looking form glided along the grass.

“I want one of those,” the bystander yelled over to Gary Walker, owner of Gary’s Ace Hardware in Culpeper.

Meet the Automower by Husqvarna, now being sold at Gary’s Ace Hardware.

The driverless mower, made since 1995, has become all the rage now thanks to advancements in technology.

Don’t have time to mow? The automower does it for you. Programmable by your smart phone with an app (that is either included with the higher-end model or can be purchased for $224), the automower has a GPS capability that allows it to map where it’s supposed to mow.

For the demonstration in the Southgate Shopping Center, Walker laid down wire along the grassy area where the mower was working.

The mower follows along the grid, grazing like a goat.

“It continuously goes off and mows, about an eighth of an inch at a time,” Walker said.

The mower will operate for about three hours, before needing to return to its charging station. It senses when the battery is 20 percent, then will return for a charge.

The lithium-ion battery is good for 8 to 10 years.

The mower, only 9 inches wide, can mow up to an acre and a quarter, depending on the model purchased, Walker said.

Walker said the higher end 450 model sells for $3,499 while the 315 model retails for $1,999. Rebates are available until Oct. 15 for all models.

Three couples find love at soap box derby

Championships aren’t the only thing being won at the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby - hearts have been won too.

Committee members of the Piedmont Area derby recently hosted a party honoring derby racers and volunteers who have not only sped down the hill, they’ve sped into love.

Brandon Feagan won the Master’s Division at the All-American Derby in 2008 and has raced in the Piedmont Area derby since 2005.

Growing up, his father Charlie owner of the Culpeper Machine Supply - would always ask him why he didn’t date a girl from the derby.

Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby committee member Frankie Gilmore still laughs at his answer.

“Brandon’s answer was always ‘they’re icky,’” she said with a laugh.

His wife, Danielle Hunley, started racing in 2009. The two started dating in 2013 and were married in 2016.

When he and Danielle got married, it was a given - I can’t tell you how many people said ‘Brandon married an icky girl,’” Gilmore chuckled.

For the Feagans, the derby wasn’t even the catalyst for their relationship. They had raced together for years and went to high school together, both graduating 2011. It wasn’t until they went to community college together that the romantic feelings came faster than a car down Paul Bates Raceway.

“It just happened,” Brandon said.

“She had a close friend that was a longtime family friend of mine and they asked me to go catfishing. We started talking and the rest is history.”

The fact that they had raced together in the master’s division helped strengthen their bond,

Brandon said. But growing up, he never imagined he would marry a derby girl.

“It never even crossed my mind, she was another derby friend,” he said with a chuckle.

Once they became a couple, they couldn’t wait to tell the derby family - knowing they would be thrilled.

The night of the second derby fundraiser for Paul Bates Raceway, in April 2013, the duo were inseparable. No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get Gilmore to notice that they were more than just “derby friends.”

Feagan played a role in one of the other derby romances too, helping introduce longtime friends Hunter Chapman and Kay Graves.

The Chapmans were married in March of this year and now live in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Hunter is a flight instructor and Kay is a bond trader.

Hunter started racing at age 8 in 2003 and as soon as he and Kay started dating, he brought her into the derby family. She was in charge of the heat sheets while he handled the starting blocks at the top of the hill.

The volunteering at the derby helped bring the two closer together.

“I think that anytime you can spend more time with each other, it’s a good thing,” Kay said.

It also highlighted a side of Hunter, Gilmore explained.

“We were talking one day and Kay said that she sees a side of Hunter at the derby and that’s one of the reasons she loves him,” Gilmore said.

Kay said the derby family is important to the couple, pointing out that the Feagans are coming to visit them to celebrate their one year wedding anniversary in a couple of months.

It’s those bonds that she and Hunter hope to pass on their children in the future.

“We haven’t found a derby down here yet, but I’m sure we will, it’s something to look forward to in the future,” Kay said.

or 12, he said. They started dating in between their senior year of high school and their freshman year of college, and he was quickly roped into the derby.

Suzi started racing in 2006 and fell in love with the sport. She, along with Feagan and Chapman, were some of the first members of the derby’s junior committee. Along with longtime racer and friend Sean Brown, the group spoke to the National Convention at the World Championships for the race directors.

“All three of them have been huge in the success of the derby,” Gilmore said. “All three of them were part of the junior committee and all three still continue to volunteer when they can.”

So it only made sense that Suzi would share her love for the derby with Drew.

He quickly joined in and while being too old to race, found other ways to contribute. For the past four years, he’s been the voice of

the derby - announcing the racers as they come down the track.

“I think the people is what makes the derby special,” he said. “Everyone is enthusiastic and helpful. You can feel the love for everyone and for the organization.”

The pair have a wedding date set for May 26, 2018, conveniently before next year’s derby. While life may sometimes get in the way, Kelliher said the derby is something they’ll cling to.

“It’s something that will stick with us for a long time,” he said.

“With Suzi’s interest in teaching science, engineering and math and me being an engineer, it’s close to both our hearts.”

When it comes time for a family, he said he wouldn’t force his kids into the derby or swimming, but he’ll highly recommend it.

“It’s a great thing to do,” he said.

In the end, the derby is all about family - and Gilmore couldn’t be happier that more families are being grown out of the derby.

Magical sounds of “… Night Music” CURTAIN CALLS

What but the genius of Stephen Sondheim could turn the labyrinth of Ingmar Bergman’s film “Smiles on a Summer Night” into the musical “A Little Night Music”? And trust the wizardry of Eric Schaeffer and company to bring it gloriously alive on stage. Signature Theatre blossoms as it meets the kaleidoscopic range of artistic challenges, and the night smiles on every one of them.

Isn’t it rich? Fredrik Egerman’s affair with the actress Desiree Armfeldt resulted in a daughter that he doesn’t know about; meanwhile, in a rash attempt to recover his lost youth, he has married the eighteenyear-old Anne, a porcelain doll of a girl who sits on his lap and teases him as she would an uncle and refuses to sleep with him.

His dyspeptic son, Henrik (by a former marriage) is a seminary student who disapproves of everything - himself most of all for falling in love with his father’s young wife. Fredric visits Desiree only to get caught by her present lover, Carl-Magnus, a bellowing sort who lectures his wife on

the importance of fidelity in women.

And Desiree’s mother, a grand dame who was once courted by Europe’s loftiest titles, decries the lack of flair in modern liaisons. Behind the scenes, Petra, the worldly young maid, flits from one lusty celebration to the next.

Don’t you love farce?

Sondheim himself said that this was a show about “people wasting time”; at least in 1900 Sweden in the season of perpetual sunset, they waste time with extraordinary panache. With thematic roots stretching back to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “A Little Night Music” is one continuous waltz through the more forgivable follies and delusions of human beings.

Under Eric Schaeffer’s direction, this dream cast blooms with elegance and wit. Act I introduces the fools on whom the night is said to smile and reveals the petty discontents that keep them nipping at life’s heels.

Act II brings them together under one roof where life – or perhaps Fate - playing the clown, treats them to a metaphorical pie in the face. One by one they trip on the cumulative result of their own foolishness only to discover real happiness offering a hand up.

No casting decision in this show was less than inspired, but the real triumph is the pairing of Bobby Smith as Fredrik, middle-aged, discontented

Smith brings a touch of dignity to the pathos and humor of his no-fool-like-an-old-fool role, and his interactions with the lovely Anne, (Nicki Elledge) his infuriatingly chaste wife, only accentuate his desperation. The braiding together of the complicated arrangement, “Now,” “Soon,” and “Later” with the dismal youth, Henrik, (Sam Ludwig) is one of Sondheim’s more spectacular musical juggling acts.

Bursting the stage at its seams with each entrance is Will Gartshore as the Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, the ultimate male chauvinist, a human dartboard if Fate be a woman. How else to play this character except to the hilt – and Gartshore succeeds in making us love to hate him, even as he solemnly warbles “In Praise of Women.” Why his devoted wife Charlotte (the fabulous Tracy Lynn Olivera) remains devoted is hard to fathom, but Ms. Olivera leaks resentment into some of the driest, funniest lines of the night. That her dagger-pointed wit is merely protecting an aching heart is apparent in her duet with Anne, “Every Day a Little Death.”

Wheelchair-bound Madame Armfeldt, played with aristocratic gravity by Florence Lacey, is a sometime Philosopher Queen who doesn’t quite know what to make of finding herself old, infirm, and without lovers. Having profited handsomely from a series of statusenhancing affairs throughout Europe,

she now has only her mansion, her granddaughter, and her solitaire game.

Her song “Liaisons” gives vent with poignancy and humor to her acerbic view of the world.

And they all have one thing in common: Desiree Armfeldt. Scoring the popular Holly Twyford in this role was a casting coup, for she delivers the full battery of her magnetic stage presence and comedic timing to this enticing character. “You Must Meet My Wife” sung with Fredrik brims with insouciance, but the show’s best known number, “Send In The Clowns”, reaches all of its heartbreaking potential delivered in Twyford’s unique, crushed glass voice.

Only one person revels shamelessly in the abundance of her appeal.

Petra, Anne’s maid, is only shocked when people don’t take advantage of sex. Maria Rizzo brings lusty joie de vivre to her part and sums up the predicament of her life’s station in “The Miller’s Son.” Robert Perdziola has dressed the cast in turn of the century lines with most of the ladies in sandy rose and lace. Desiree is the exception, of course, in rich, bead-encrusted fabrics. There is a porcelain, play house quality to the characters which accents the fragile, superficial surfaces overlaying their turbulent interiors – breakable dolls, every one.

Paul Depoo’s elegantly spare set and Colin Bills’ lights provide in swift moving area staging just the backdrop for a time of year when night never fully comes and the sun never completely sets. For characters who hope beyond reason and love without reward, that anticipation sums up Madame Armfeldt’s pensive conclusion that “What you want so rarely happens.”

Monkey puzzles and lawmakers: make 'em take the pledge!

It's a little mystery that Culpeper-area voters have almost figured out, but not quite. Why are the realtors, the health industry, the beer wholesalers and bankers, coal operators and electric utilities shoving all that cash into the Virginia legislature?

"Puzzles plus money produce the view that the money explains the puzzles," legal scholar Lawrence Lessig has written. "In a line: We don’t trust our government."

If he's talking about you, you have lots of company. Three-quarters of American voters -- nearly equal numbers in both parties -- are convinced that Congress is for sale. Given its record, the Virginia legislature can't make a credible claim to higher public confidence, either.

William Black, a former bank regulator, summarizes the ordinary citizen's street-level, tragic view when he writes that "a campaign contribution always generates the best return on investment." But your government's yours, not Dominion Energy's. It's not for the benefit of the roster of corporate high-rollers that have given large amounts to this area's lawmakers -although we keep electing them.

So the missing puzzle piece is this: if they're making monkeys of us and we know it, what can we do about it? And you can find the answer in Roanoke.

Start here: 45 House of Delegates candidates so far, mostly Democrats, have signed a pledge that they'll refuse to accept campaign cash from Appalachian Power and Dominion Energy, the two state-regulated electric power monopolies. Among them are

Culpeper County’s BOS needs a true cost-benefit analyst Culpeper County’s Board of Supervisors needs someone with the capability to look at economic, population, and even legal trends to create policies that protect and move Culpeper forward.

The current board has one builder, a small business man, two realtors, a retired real estate specialist, and two farmers. While some might see this as a good “broad brush” of community experience, no one on the current board has

Arlington's Rip Sullivan (D-48, has also refused to take Dominion money.

But Roanoke's Sam Rasoul, a 35-year-old management consultant who has served in the House of Delegates since 2014, has gone even further. He has announced that he'll refuse campaign donations not only from Dominion and Appalachian, but any "gifts" above $5,000 from anyone.

In fact, he will take no more campaign cash at all from special-interest PACS and corporations.

Rasoul's a Democrat, but "...it is conservatives who should be leading the fight for campaign-finance reform,” Richard Painter of the University of Minnesota Law School has written.

“Why should conservative voters care?

First, big money in politics encourages big government. . . . When politicians are dependent on campaign money from contractors and lobbyists, they’re incapable of holding spending programs to account.”

So whether you're conservative, green, libertarian or liberal, here's the question: can your legislator explain why it's okay to accept "donations" from the two power companies and still cast votes on legislation that affects not only their profits, but also our electric bills and, crucially, our environment? For that matter, why is it legitimate to take money from any corporate interests who also have legislative needs that should not pre-empt the public interest?

The non-profit, non-partisan Virginia Public Access Project provides local data. Culpeper-area Delegate Nick Freitas (R-30) has gotten $1,000 from Dominion Energy, and Delegate Michael Webert (R-18), $5,000. State Senator Bryce Reeves (R-17) has received more than $14,000 from Dominion, Sen. Emmett Hanger (R-24), $23,500 and

Sen. Jill Vogel (R-27), $15,000. They have, of course, also taken donations from other corporate interests.

Meanwhile, those same public servants who take Dominion's money have voted on countless Dominionrelated bills, listened to the pitches of the sturdy corps of Dominion lobbyists.

Overall, the legislature has handed the company a lengthening series of legislative home runs worth hundreds of millions of dollars -- perhaps a billion or two by some estimates. And they routinely vote on legislation affecting the bankers, realtors, beer wholesalers, the health industry and their other benefactors.

Don't accept their easy answer: "I need the money to get elected."

Realistically: they don't need Dominion Energy money. And they should fight to transition our politics away from the other corporate payouts. Vermont, Connecticut and conservative Arizona have figured that out, with voluntary donation limits and public financing for candidates.

So ask each of your legislators and candidates: Will you pledge to reject that kind of campaign cash from now on, or fight to make public financing a major issue? Can you at least decline donations from the state-regulated utilities, Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power? If you think it's okay to accept their money, then will you pledge to abstain from voting on legislation involving those interests?

And get 'em on the record. We'd all like to know.

Chuck Duncan, a professional analyst, has decades of military and civilian experience looking at the impacts of change on people, organizations, and even countries. While he may simply describe himself as an “analyst,” he is actually an operations analyst.

He studies all aspects of costs versus potential benefits associated with solving problem.

What good is an analyst? Back in 2015, the school board wanted $750,000 of land for a new school to start construction in 2017. As a concerned citizen, Chuck Duncan evaluated both the school population

growth and the published school capacity. He argued that student population growth was too low to warrant a new school. The county commissioned a study that revealed no population growth for 5 years!

No need for new construction, and $750,000 taxpayer dollars saved!

Right now, Culpeper’s population is growing because of Baby Boomers retiring to our area. The immediate impact on the tax base should be good. But what about the long-term impact? That is why you need a skilled analyst like Chuck Duncan serving on the Board of Supervisors.

Hoptoberfest set for Sunday Culpeper Renaissance Inc. will get the fall season "hopping" with its second annual Hoptoberfest - a Gnarly Hops fall celebration.

Scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 3 from noon to 5 p.m. in the Depot District in Downtown Culpeper, the event is designed to satisfy the American Craft Beer enthusiasts with a German twist.

There's an added bonus for cider lovers too.

Downtown Culpeper, a Great American Main Street Award winner, is known for its natural beauty and historic charm and is the perfect stage for this outrageous "gnarly" festival. Surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains in the Depot District attendees can enjoy a blend of American and European craft brews, a refreshing selection of ciders and a tasty assortment of local foods.

“For the past five years, we have loved seeing the streets of Culpeper filled for Gnarly Hops... so much so that we continue it twice a year," said Kelsey Carlson, Hoptoberfest Committee Chairperson. "Hoptoberfest will be the perfect event to kick off the beautiful Virginia Fall season. What more could you ask for than a Labor Day Weekend festival full of beer, cider, great food and music?"

Hoptoberfest puts the fest in festival with more than 40 different beer selections and cider from Virginia and beyond in a variety of flavors to sample.

Delicious local eats to compliment all those liquid refreshments will also be available for purchase. Festival food provided by Bavarian Chef Food Truck, Uncle Elders BBQ, Captain Corbin's Seafood, N&A Catering – Mediterranean, North Cove Cafe and more.

All that food and drink is sure to make you want to dance. Entertainment includes live music by two phenomenal bands, Someone Else’s Problem and Henry featuring members from Gold Top County Ramblers.

For those looking to fulfill their inner artist craving, look to participating local artisans for inspiration.

ANOTHER STORY TO TELL: OK, we switched up our format this week so we could say congratulations to some of our favorite people we've met during our interviews for our Treasures of Culpeper magazine. We stopped out at Mountain Run Winery on short notice, but owners David Foster and Kayti Schumann welcomed us in with open arms and then regaled us with numerous tales about the generosity of the Culpeper community. Only open a little more than a year, Mountain Run Winery has succeeded because of the relationships they have made with the community. People have made them tables, artwork and have helped them harvest. It's given them many stories to tell and this weekend they'll be adding to it. The pair will be married Saturday, and are hosting a public reception on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. to thank everyone for welcoming them to Culpeper. David discovered the town years ago while competing in the Culpeper Sprint Triathlon and fell in love with the area - so much so that when he started to think about opening a winery, he immediately began checking into Culpeper. He and Kayti lucked into an old home for sale along Mountain Run Lake Road - the very road that he raced on the first time he came to the triathlon. They now give back to the triathlon racers, this year hosting them on their property and producing a special label for the occassion. They have several special attractions coming, including a wine honoring the Culpeper Minutemen and hopped and ginger cider for the fall. However, if you're a white wine fan, David says you might want to hurry up and stop out as the whites are expected to sell out in September or October of this year they've been popular. So congratulations to the happy couple - we raise a glass to you!

Cyclones win season-opener against CCHS Eastern View's football team rolled to a 56-7 victory over cross-town rival Culpeper County High School in the season opener for both teams Aug. 25.

D'Ago Hunter scored four times for the Cyclones and Trey Holmes added 119 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Coming into four scheduled events Aug. 30 between the two schools, they were tied at 10 points each in Community Cup standings.
