Time for peanuts and cracker jack ➤ Culpeper 4th of July Car & Motorcycle Show has several firsts

Mike and Betty Melton’s car looks like it would at home coming out of the bullpen at Nat’s Park in Washington, D.C. The 2000 Volkswagen GLX Turbo Beetle is painted like a baseball - white paint with the seams of a baseball painted on the hood running the length of the car.

Mike Melton smiled broadly as he talked about his unique car one of only 16 of its kind in the U.S. “It was a giveaway in 2000 by Frito Lay,” Melton said. “I found it on Ebay and bought it for my wife.

The guy I bought it from bought it for his wife and she grew tired of it.

Mine grew tired of it after two days with everyone wanting to come up and see it. So we decided to show it.”

Melton says it’s a good kids car, as children are attracted to the unique paint job. Now he drives it for golf and takes it around to a

few car shows in area. He said he’s aware of only of a couple others still driving - one in California and another from Ohio.

“I see the guy every once in awhile from Ohio,” Melton said.

“When we get together we call it a doubleheader.”

The interior is just as unique as the exterior. Inside the steering wheel is painted like a baseball and the gear shifter has a baseball on it.

It’s the seats, however, that are the real gem. Made by Rawlings, they are crafted from baseball leather and need cared for just like an old glove.

“I have to put glove oil on it, to keep it from wearing,” Melton said.

Melton, from Glen Allen, said he was enjoying his time in Culpeper and baseball fans throughout the car show flocked to see him home run of a car.

Children also flocked to a 1994 registered Roadster owned by Marty O’Brien, of Stafford. While many car owners had signs on their vehicles to not touch, O’Brien offered little kids to take a seat in the hot rod and have a photo opportunity.

“A lot of people don’t like kids touching the cars,” he said. “This is for the kids. It’s a play toy. They can climb in it and look at it.”

Detroit and had been searching for a Roadster for 20 years.

“On my wedding day in North Carolina, my wife and I were allowed to take a Roadster for a ride,” O’Brien said. “I fell in love with it.”

He bought this model for $4,500 and has put quite a bit of work into including a new fuel tanks, side-

bars and is having it upholstered.

This was his first car show displaying the car, and he - along with the kids - was having a good time.

“This is a blast,” he said.

Duncan announces candidacy for Jefferson District BOS seat Chuck Duncan recently announced he will run for Jefferson District Supervisor against Brad Rosenberger in the November 2017 election.

Duncan, 71, opposed Rosenberger in 2014 but lost.

Rosenberger has served as the Jefferson District Supervisor for 32 years.

Why, after losing in 2014, is Duncan running again?

“I want to give the voters an alternative, a choice,” Duncan said. “It sounds silly, but the other two Chuck supervisor races are Duncan unopposed. It tends to keeps supervisors honest.”

Duncan, the Culpeper Republican Committee chairman, is running on a platform of bringing Culpeper together, making Culpeper more business friendly and creating more jobs for the next generation.

“We really need to bring the Culpeper community together,” Duncan said. “I’m talking Democrats vs. Republicans, big government versus little government, and one of the things I did back in 2015 was I opposed the town’s maintenance ordinance.

Wonderful ordinance, wonderful idea except they never defined what blight was.”

Duncan said that he reached out to the NAACP to help battle the ordinance, which raised a few eyebrows. He was concerned about the program affecting the elderly poor.

“The general members were surprised to see a conservative Republican down there trying to help out the poor,” Duncan said.

“I was trying to help out everyone because when I see government trying to assume an arbitrarily determined role, that’s tyranny.”

That led to a wider interaction with the NAACP and Duncan said he recently met with them to discuss the Virginia Republican principles.

“We really need to go ahead and talk together and maintain a bridge,” Duncan said.

One of his strengths that he says he would bring to the Board of Supervisors is ability to analyze situations.

He cited an example from last year, when the Culpeper County Public Schools discussed buying land for new schools. He said he sat in on a meeting when it was asked what the number of

If you have not met me before, this is a picture of me ... Rich Crowley. About nine years ago I began a photo blog I called, "Faces of Culpeper." Shortly thereafter I met with the editor of the Culpeper Times and we hatched the idea of a weekly feature that we would call "Rich Crowley's Snapshot of Culpeper." We have had a lot of fun with it as I have included nearly 1,000 people from the "Peper" in my "Snapshots." Then five years ago at the urging of my son, Andrew, I began a facebook version of "Faces of Culpeper." That project has been unbelievable.

This week alone my piece on veterans (much like my "Times" entry) has garnered well over 11,000 hits. I am retired and very much a people person and have thoroughly enjoyed introducing myself to people and taking their picture. My photographic projects were meant to make a difference in my new community, Culpeper (check), give me some recognition in that community (check), and widen my circle of acquaintances and friends (double check). I have had a ball and no, I have not been paid one penny for any of this ... I have done it for the shear enjoyment of people, photography and Culpeper. Now it is time for this chapter of my life to end. We are moving to California to join a son and four grandkids in the Fresno area. This was not an easy decision at this time of life, giving up friends and our dream house, but one that we are embracing with enthusiasm.

students was, and the answer was “I don’t know.”

“I just sort of went ‘you can’t figure out what number of kids to make a guestimate,” Duncan said.

“When you actually look at the number of kids at the time, based on what had happened the last several years, I said you have at least five years before you have a problem.”

In the end, the schools had a survey completed and found that they did not need to add schools at the time.

“This is what I call an analytical approach to what is going on,” Duncan said.

“That said, we’re in our biggest part of uncertainty because of Donald Trump. If Donald Trump succeeds in cutting government employment we lose a lot of pressure on the expanding suburbs.”

One of Duncan’s other main goals is improving transparency when it comes to the county’s budget.

“We should be watching the budgets carefully,” Duncan said.

“I would like to see the county’s checkbook put on the Internet,” Duncan said.

“They did it in Goochland County. You can see who gets what, where and when. Money coming in and going out. The average citizen is probably never going to look at that but it becomes interesting when strange things happen. It would great for the taxpaying voters to know how much is going where and when.”

Locally, in his district, he knows that broadband access is one of the biggest discussions.

“It’s an extremely difficult one,” Duncan said.

“People would like to telecommute. I ran into one guy who has Hughesnet and he said he had offered the cable company thousands of dollars to run a cable half a mile to tie in. They wouldn’t do it. To me the first thing you have to do is make it easier to put in the cell phone towers. The next thing to do is can you make feeders off a centralized point. As far as the county role in that, it has to be more friendly to putting up towers than they have been.”

Duncan wants to make it easier for businesses to relocate to Culpeper by working with legislators to make it easier to start a business and to reduce unnecessary regulations.

“I’m running on my record and the goal to reach out and bring Culpeper together,” Duncan said.

Duncan and his wife Carol have two children and four grandchildren. He is a member of Culpeper Reformation Lutheran Church and is a volunteer for the Amissville UMC Food Share program.

Habitat For Humanity home receives renovation ➤ JES Foundation repairs crawl space

Hunched over in a cramped space, working for hours to repair an intricate moisture retention system isn’t how most people would like to give back.

The employees at JES Foundation Repair aren’t most people.

The skilled workers were busy repairing and resealing a crawl space at a Culpeper Habitat for Humanity home off Griffinsburg Road.

Originally built in 2012, the house was foreclosed by Habitat for Humanity and is being repaired to

be offered to another prospective habitat homebuyer. Jerry Martire, Culpeper Habitat for Humanity construction coordinator, said this is the first time anything like this has happened to the Culpeper habitat homes, of which there are about half a dozen in the county.

Martire said there has been about $20,000 worth of repairs done on the house and the location is almost ready for another prospective homebuyer to move in.

“This is not a gift,” Martire said.

“They buy the house, it is advantageous for the homebuyer, but they do buy the house. They are also required to do ‘sweat equity.’”

Foundation worked to remove the inadequate crawl space vapor barrier and install a new crawl space encapsulation system.

“I contacted JES Foundation Repair to see if they could help with the crawl space encapsulation since they are the region’s foremost experts in crawl space moisture control,” Martire said. “I was pleased that they offered to provide the materials as well as the team of experts to do the installation.”

The crawl space encapsulation system will isolate the home from the earth. The humidity level in the air will be lowered, reducing moisture. The dehumidification/air purification system further reduces mold growth.

“The system we are installing not only provides protection to the structure itself, but also improves the health of the living space,” said Lance Ziolkowski, one of the volunteers from JES. “The next family that lives there will breathe easier with a new, healthier crawl space beneath them.”

Ziolkowski explained that the plastic that was currently in place, a 6 mil version, was prone to rip on the gravel underneath and that would allow the vapor to escape into the house.

He said the difficulty of the work was strenuous, but the crawl space in Culpeper at least made it easier to access.

“These are some of the worst to repair,” Ziolkwoski said. “This one isn’t so bad because there’s a fourfoot crawl space. Think of some of the ones that are 18-inch crawl spaces. This has gravel down and plastic, this is the best case scenario.”

and the surrounding area on foundations and crawl spaces. She said it only makes sense to give back to the community.

“It’s very important for us,” Williams said. “The community gives back to us so we want to do our duty in making sure that we are assisting in any way possible.”

Martire said the 1,650 square foot house is larger than what Habitat would normally build, but they were required to due to the land being donated to them back in the 2000s.

Martire said several community organizations and businesses donate their time to Habitat, but the volunteers have been hard to come by. He said that on this renovation project, he had four volunteers.

“One of the big issues we have are volunteers and getting enough people to do the work,” Martire said. “I wish I had an answer, we’re

going to be breaking a ground on a house in the early fall and I can’t build a house with four volunteers.”

Martire said they are close to being done with the renovations and then expect they will be able to have a homebuyer purchase the house.

He said the fact that the house needed to be foreclosed and renovated was an anomaly.

“We have not had an issue of this magnitude at any of our other homes,” Martire said. “Other affiliates have had the issue where they’ve had to foreclose, it’s the first time it’s happened here.”

To qualify for Habitat for Humanity, residents must complete a screening and interview process and they are sent to a financial management course at Alum Springs Baptist Church.

That is, until Frye gets hold of it.

The chainsaw roars as it comes to life, a gleam comes into Frye’s eye and he begins to work.

It’s all amazing to him, because he picked up the hobby on a whim.

“We’d go to Tennessee and the beach a lot and we’d see the carvings,” Frye said.

“So I decided to make a tiki pole, and then I made a bear and next thing I know we’re selling the tikis and it just bloomed.”

Frye started his hobby four years ago while still working on the night shift at Giant. He retired last year after 36 years there, “It’s a hobby, but it’s kind of full time,” Frye said with a laugh.

“I just enjoyed making them come to life slowly,” he said.

Frye, who has dabbled in cartooning and graphics for years, gives each of his creatures a different personality. He does it through multiple ways, either in the expressions he carves into them or on the paint he uses to finish them. Unlike many other wood carvers, he puts a healthy splash of color into his carvings.

“A lot of people carve them and don’t paint them,” Frye said. “I think that’s what people like about ours, we carve and paint them. And we kind of do surf and turf.”

A quick look at his garage gives that away. Beside the bears, owls and eagles his mountain setting - are tikis, parrots, fish, wizards and dragons.

“I try to do a lot of realism, and realism is good, but it seems always turn cartoony,” Frye said. “People seem to like that as it gives it some character.”

Working with mostly cedar and pine, Frye finds his logs through locals who have wood to sell or give away and through a couple of saw mills. Once he gets started, he can carve three or four bears in a day.

The painting takes a little longer, but he admits that with creatures like the bears, he’s figured out the color patterns so it moves a bit quicker.

Flanked by his faithful canine companion Elsa, Frye will go out in the morning with a cup of coffee and sometimes just starts carving what comes to him. Other times, he has a list of ever growing requests from customers who have heard about his talents.

Knowledge about his craft has spread through word of mouth, mostly after he has sold his creations at craft shows in Sperryville, Culpeper, Madison and Warrenton.

“We go to a lot of craft venues,” Frye said. “We have a few who are more like collectors. I have one guy who has probably more than 20 in his yard.”

He guesses he’s made more than 500 critters already, with about 100 on hand in his garage. He admits his supply is constantly in flux, as customers have been visiting his home more often.

His favorite animal to make are the bears, but he’s created just about everything. Bears, owls, eagles, hawks, fish, beavers, turtles, ghosts, gnomes, wizards, tikis, dragons and buzzards line the one side of his workshop.

“There’s always someone who wants something different,” Frye said. “You go to a show and they want a flamingo or something. We like to do special orders for people. It’s always a first.”

One of his more intricate and realistic designs came with the request for a Cigar store Indian. It measured about five feet tall, but wasn’t nearly as large as the two eight-foot bears he sold recently.

Animals aren’t the only carvings he does. End tables, shelves and benches also adorn his workshop. On his porch sits a beautiful stained bench, part of his personal collection.

“My wife has a tendency to steal my

NEWS good stuff,” Frye said with a laugh.

On the floor of his garage sits his tools of the trade - a large chainsaw flanked by a small handheld model, grinders and torches.

“The chainsaw is scary anyways,” Frye said. “I use a really small one for most of my work.”

His prices range as low as $40 to upwards of $300, depending on the size of the creation.

Most of his medium sized bears average around $150.

“I just like to see customers happy,” Frye said. “Usually if they end up buying one, they’ll buy two. I just enjoy people being happy with them.”

Sometimes, Frye said, he’ll start working on what he thinks is a bear and it quickly changes.

“A lot of times when I’m starting out it’s hard to get going in the morning,” Frye said. “But once you start getting into it, and I do three or four at a time so I can look back and get the different angles on them. It gives you a different perspective.”

He’s had several unique requests, including a woman who had him make a llama with a welcome sign for a llama farm.

He added homemade eyelashes to give it more character and make it look like it’s big brothers at the farm.

His ideas for designs can come at any time, so he carries a piece of paper draws out his ideas, then returns to carve them into the wood. Once the carvings are done, that’s when he moves onto his favorite part.

“I go crazy with the spray cans,” Frye said. “I love the painting part. I’d say that’s my favorite part because that’s when they start coming to life.”

Frye and his wife Valerie have been regulars on the local craft show circuit, and recently signed up for the Graves Mountain Apple Festival again this fall. Every year that he’s gone to Graves Mountain, he’s sold a welcome sign Yoda from Star Wars that says “Welcome are you.”

“Every year it sells out,” he said with a laugh. “When you set up at one of the festivals, we’re different. You’ll see everyone stop and take pictures.”

His creations are one of a kind, each one having a different personality or a little quirk. It’s a conscious decision to do so.

“My wife will always say we should make one that looks like that, but you have to stop because you want them to be different,” Frye said. “But it’s good because then they’re one of a kind.”

His creations have ended up all over the East Coast, with people from North Carolina, Pennsylvania and other states buying his carvings.

“The biggest thing is just the thrill of people enjoying it,” Frye said. “It’s a good feeling knowing that you made it and somewhere someone is enjoying it.”

The Culpeper Madison Rappahannock Farm Show, known as the CMR Farm Show, is July 6 through the 10 at Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises (CAE).

The CAE is located on Business 29, just south of the new car dealers.

The first few days consist of check-ins/weigh-ins for 4-H livestock and the livestock showing competitions. Saturday and Sunday also include pet shows and the judging of items in the homemakers’ departments, such as baked goods, canned goods, and crafts. The Fair culminates with the annual livestock sale on Monday evening.

You can show your support by visiting with the exhibitors and asking them questions about their experience raising a project animal. You will be

Did you know the poultry entries include pigeons and doves? It is not hard to imagine the number of hours that each child has devoted to the care and maintenance of their animals.

They certainly learn a lesson or two about giving selflessly to a creature that is completely dependent on their care! In the case of production animals, 4-H’ers may shed a few tears after the show. The life of a herdsman is one of care and nurturing, combined with practical reality.

A fun event featuring the young 4-H Cloverbuds takes place on Saturday, July 8th at 11 am in the sale barn. The Fur, Feather & More Pet Show is for children ages 5 through 12.

Some of the categories include Best Celebrity Look-Alike, Pet/Handler Look-Alike, Least Obedient, Best TailWagging, and others. Does your family pit bull look like Jay Leno? You might want to enter it in the contest!

Lots of other fun activities are scheduled for Saturday. The goatmilking demo begins at 9 am. Other things to see would be the 11 am soapmaking demo, noon honey harvesting and 1 pm fiber spinning & weaving.

Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. there will be a Basic Land Navigation Competition. There is no entry fee and it is open to non 4-H members as well.

this event you will be provided with a map and a compass. Now that sounds like buckets of fun!

If your interest is more of the culinary variety, some of the cooking competitions include the pound cake and apple pie contests. There is quite an extensive list of other baked goods including breads, biscuits, cookies, candies, and more. You might think about entering an obscure category with the hope that no one else will enter, assuring yourself a blue ribbon.

Think again! Rule # 9 under general rules and regulations. “Classes with only one entry will be awarded the placing at the judge’s discretion.” I fell victim to this obscure rule a few years back at another local county fair. I had the good fortune, or so it seemed, of being the only man to submit homemade cookies in the “adult male division.” I thought the blue ribbon was a lock. No such luck! The judges deemed my entry to be worthy of a third place ribbon at best!

Get out of the house this weekend and go on down to the CMR Farm show! You will likely run into your neighbors and get to know some other folks you may not have met before. Take the time to ask some of the exhibitors questions about their animals and you will return home enlightened and entertained!

It's been half a year since I wrote about the TV show that is being shot in the area - Daily Bread. Here is a quick synopsis of the show, Daily Bread is a faith based, post apocalyptic action drama.

It features seven millennial girls stranded on a farm with nothing but guns and food when a solar flare hits, knocking out electricity everywhere and creating disasters all around the world. Their battle is not only to survive but also to not lose their humanity in the process.

The show is being produced by writer and director Nina May and Renaissance Women Productions.

The goal is not only to make a great show that will entertain and educate people, but it's also about creating opportunities for aspiring ac-

tors and young people wanting to get experience on the production side.

They've discovered some great actors from the area in the last several months, from Dr. Russell Brear to Haley Billings a recent graduate of Eastern View High School.

2017 has been a coming out for Daily Bread, for most of 2016 they were shooting on Nina's farm out in Rappahannock. But then starting in January was NAPTE (North American Producers & Television Executives) where they were the hit of the show with their beautiful cast members and pink and camo booth.

After that they quickly got into production mode, this time out on location.

Nina was overwhelmed with how helpful the Culpeper Department of Tourism was getting permission from the business owners to shoot.

She also wants to thank the Culpeper Volunteer Fire Department for loaning them two wonderful men to be extras.

One of the big questions everyone who hears about the show asks, is how can they see it?

Although Daily Bread got quite a few good offers from several networks at NAPTE they have decided

to self release and make the show available online. Nina is confident that they will have Season One edited and ready for release by mid to late August.

She also is planning on having a special pre-release viewing of the first two episodes for the hundreds of mostly local people who have been involved in the project.

Mays' deepest appreciation and gratitude goes to all who have participated in any form or fashion.

Last call! There is one final chance to be in the show, they are shooting the season two finale this weekend, July 8 and 9 and they are looking for about 30 people to be extras.

Little Free Library opens in Rixeyville STAFF REPORT

Checkout the newest addition to the Culpeper County Library - a Little Free Library located at Ma & Paws store at 9040 Monumental Mills Road, in Rixeyville. This is the first registered Little Free Library in the Culpeper area.

"It was a great combination of community involvement" said Culpeper County Library Director Susan Keller. "A previous volunteer saw a Little Free Library, investigated it, found the plans and built us one of our own out of materials that he had on hand. Tina Scroggins at

Ma & Paws store thought it would be a great addition to an area she has at the store where picnic tables are located. Tina was just great to work with. She gave the Library the spot and the County installed it."

The idea behind the Little Free Libraries is to take a book, return a book and to keep it going.

The Friends of the Culpeper County Library support the Little Free Library through the registration process and by giving the library books to support the usage.

VIEWS My fitness journey: Getting started I noticed it in March.

I was outside playing soccer with Mady and Maura, getting them ready for their spring season.

We weren’t playing long, and frankly not that hard with a 7 and a 4-year-old, when I had to stop.

I couldn’t catch my breath and my legs were weak.

Panicked, I went to the doctor a few days later, thinking something was wrong.

I’m perfectly fine, he told me, just terribly out of shape.

That was not a shocking find.

For the past two years, I’ve lived a sedentary lifestyle - sitting behind a desk designing a newspaper. Not to mention I was diagnosed with sarcoidosis a few years ago and that set my fitness goals back a bit.

But now my symptoms are gone and after a hard look at myself in the mirror, it was time to get back in shape.

I’ll be 40 next year so I set a goal for myself to be fit by 40. Going into this, I initially weighed 200 pounds and I didn’t even check my BMI because I was afraid I’d break the instruments.

Let’s put it this way - I’m more belly than anything else.

It never used to be that way. When I was in high school I was 100 pounds soaking wet with a brick in my back pocket. I wasn’t very strong, but at least I had a high metabolism and I could eat whatever I wanted.

By college, that ability started to waste away. At one point I was up to 250 pounds. Thankfully, I used to be able to shed weight quickly and got back down to a more manageable weight - until recently.

It is through play that children learn about the world, experience new sensations, learn about the strengths and abilities of their bodies, and how to make friends and negotiate social interactions with other children.

My back has caused me problems and my knees have always been an issue, having extra weight on my 5-foot-11-inch frame doesn’t help with those issues.

So, after a lot of research and soul searching I finally bit the bullet and joined Crossfit Culpeper.

Coach Mike Duff had a friends and family event in April that I participated in, and I got hooked. I did it for a week and then life got in the way again. I didn’t sign up right away but Mike never let me forget our conversations. Sometimes, you have to do something for yourself.

I have a third child on the way, I want to be able to play with her and keep up with her like I did Mady when I was in my early and mid 30s. Maura will always be active, I have to be able to chase after her.

So, my decision was made. I just wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into.

Thankfully, it’s been a smooth - but sore - transition.

I just completed my first week and come Monday, I could barely move.

Despite using muscles I hadn’t used in probably 20 years, I willed myself to the gym.

That’s the first step, Mike said.

As a coach, he can’t force people to come. He can only work with you once you arrive. Getting there is the first step. Frankly, it hasn’t been hard to motivate myself to go. It’s once we start training that my mind and body are saying “ohhhh, no, we can’t do that.”

I watch men and women deadlift weights triple of what I’m attempting and I feel embarrassed. I know I shouldn’t be, because they’ve been training for months or years and I’m just getting started. But I’m such a competitive person that I want to keep up, but my body barks at me that I can’t.

The Bright Spot playground location will be at the Culpeper County Sports complex off Greens Corner Road.

and lifting properly. I’ve struggled at that mostly due to the fact I’m stiff after years of not taking care of my body. My upper body is tight, my lower body is tighter and despite doing agility exercises, I still feel like C-3P0.

I realize I get there, but like my daughters, I’m impatient. That’s been one of the toughest parts, teaching myself to be patient and to listen to what my coaches are telling me.

Crossfit is different from normal gyms I’ve joined, there’s a camaraderie and level of one-on-one workouts that I haven’t experienced before. I constantly have a coach near me, telling me how to correct a position or giving me positive encouragement. It’s refreshing and not something I’ve experienced in other gym settings.

The other aspect that I've never been good with is nutrition. I wouldn't say that I've ever truly ate not healthy, I've always included fruit and vegetables in our diet and thankfully my girls love them.

Then again, I've never really watched what I ate. If it was avaiable, I'd take it. I guess that's one of the perks of being a writer, people will offer you food on a regular basis. When I was younger, it was how I fed myself.

Now, I have to learn to be careful about what I ingest - cutting down on carbohydrates and not eating as many sweets.

I love sweets, that's been the hardest part.

Just having someone to talk to about the process has been helpful, and that's the benefit of doing crossfit.

There's always a coach to help you plan and to encourage you on your path.

So hopefully, I won’t bore you with my fitness journey, but I plan on reporting back once a month, soon in our weekly health section once we launch that here at the Times. Until then, if you see me and I can barely wave hello, you’ll know why.

Cheddar unites America and England

Thank goodness it was the tea and not the cheese that went overboard in Boston. Cheddar (dubbed America’s most iconic cheese) has a kinship that crosses the Atlantic. Yes, clothbound cheddar unites America and England.

Centuries old and complex, the clothbound cheddar relationship has at times made the two nations collaborators, and at others, competitors. Through industrialization and World wars, the clothbound process has survived.

Survived, but at a cost, as much of the knowledge of cheddar making (practical knowledge gained over centuries) has literally, disappeared. Disappeared in the movement towards automation that’s driven by lower costs and has moved consumers away from tradition, and frankly, taste.

Both here in America and in England, “Bulk Cheddar Cheese” has grown to dominate the cheese market. Thankfully, it has also been the spark for a revolution. A cheese making revolution that believes in consumer education and restoration of traditional cheese making with distinctive tastes. Ideas that closely parallel the goals of the American Slow Food movement.

In England, it may have been the same ideology that led Nick Saunders & Randolph Hodgson to open Neal’s Yard Dairy (in England) on July 4th, 1979.

Since then, Neal’s Yard has been at the forefront of restoring English farmstead cheeses. Their efforts are restoring awareness of cheeses that have survived near extinctions and helping others migrate away from automation to tradition.

These same English cheese producers are sharing their knowledge with American cheese makers who lost the clothbound cheese making traditions in this country. In his book “Cheddar”, author Gordon Edgar writes that many American Cheddar cheese makers are, in grateful to be re-learning from the English.

Vermont’s Cabot clothbound cheddar, aged at Jasper Hill, is one example of American cheese making that has learned from English traditions.

In part, what makes the transAtlantic sharing so interesting is that sharing the “how to” of cheese making only matters to a certain extent. Indeed Farmstead cheeses, wherever they are made, should reflect the character of where they originate. Grasses, the herd, starter cultures, rennet and more and define these natural cheeses and the resulting tastes. Unlike those made by process alone, the flavors are unique where each batch frequently follows the seasons in which the ruminants were milked.

To that end, I saw it fitting that as July fourth put America on the map, it also marks the start of a cheese revolution across the ocean and unites cheese makers in purpose. For your part, I recommend that you seek, find, taste and discover clothbound cheddars. The taste of place (terroir) is well worth the search and comes with the knowledge that you are helping continue a centuries long tradition. A tradition that in today’s world has become revolutionary.

FRESH LIKE AT GRANDMA'S HOUSE: Wally Hudson always had a dream of opening his own business. After working 15 years as a software consultant, he realized it. Moving Meadows Farm opened at 254 E. Davis St. in November 2013 and has quickly become a fixture of the Davis Street culture. Known for their delightful baked goods and grass-fed beef products, Hudson and his family welcome each visitor with a warm smile and courteous service. "We have an emphasis on farm to table, and we try to go out of our way to make people feel good," Hudson said. Grilling grass fed beef burgers outside on July 4, Hudson stressed that getting to know their neighbors was one of the top priorities at Moving Meadows. "When people come in we are interested in them as much as they are interested in our products," he said. "We try to be a good friend. If someone needs to talk, we let them talk." They might have trouble talking if they are nibbling on one of the delectable baked goods offered at the store. Hudson said the cinnamon buns are the number one seller. All of the baked goods are made from scratch, just like your grandma or great grandmother would create.

Moving Meadows uses no corn syrup, no growth hormones or other non-organic material. After leaving the software consulting business, Hudson opened the farm and for the first three years the family sold their wares at the Culpeper Renaissance Inc. Downtown Farmer's Market. The store still has a close connection with the market, as they are set up right beside it on Saturdays.

"Saturdays are by far our busiest day," Hudson said. They've also started supplying businesses, including Sperryville Trading and North Cove Cafe Food Truck out of Madison. Besides bread, they sell grass fed beef, goat and pasture raised chickens anens and turkeys along with eggs. Most of all, Hudson said, they just want to meet their neighbors.
