Revolutionary War soldier honored during Memorial Day service Contributed report The Society for Preservation of Culpeper History participated in the nation-wide “Wreathsacross-America” Memorial Day Commemoration with a solemn wreath-laying at the historical site of the home of John Spilman.

Spilman was a revolutionary soldier. His family’s homesite is now preserved as part of Culpeper County’s Spilman Park on Colvin Road near Jeffersonton. He was a descendent of the German colonists who pioneered in the Little Fork area of what is now Culpeper County in the early 1700s.

Wreaths were laid in front of the stone chimney remains of the Spilman house site by representatives of Society for Preservation of Culpeper History and of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Mike Dennis, Leonard Cowherd and Charles Jamison presented the wreath on behalf of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter. Peter Stetson and Ron Bird presented the wreath on behalf of the Society for Preservation of Culpeper History.

settlement in the Little Fork area was presented by Col. O. H. Perry Cabot (U.S. Army, Ret.). Col. Cabot displayed a map showing the interconnections among the

early settlers’ land grants in the Little Fork area. The Little Fork area is centered by the community of Jeffersonton and comprises much of the Jefferson Magisterial District of Culpeper County. The term “Little Fork” describes the area between the conjunction of the Rappahannock and Hazel Rivers in Culpeper County.

“Remembering our history and preserving historic places is essential for maintaining America’s greatness,” said Peter Stetson, resident of nearby Roseland Farm.

Mary Jo Browning, on behalf of the Little Fork Episcopal Church Preservation Foundation, led the group in prayer for the nation.

Little Fork Church served as the established center of worship for the area in colonial times.

Located in the same vicinity as the Spilman historic site, the current church building was constructed in 1776, and is the oldest serving church building in Culpeper County.

Society for Preservation of Culpeper History is a non-profit, nonpartisan research and educational organization.

SPCH’s mission is to promote knowledge and appreciation of the historical heritage of Culpeper County.

Space is still available for a Pollinator Habitat Training scheduled for Wednesday, June 7 in Culpeper, to support a native plant pollinator habitat project proposed for Yowell Meadow Park.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries is hoping to bring together volunteers from multiple partner organizations in the Culpeper community who will collaborate to implement a small pollinator project at Yowell Meadow Park and then use the habitat in their subsequent education outreach. This could include Master Gardeners, Master Naturalists, 4H and scout leaders, Native Plant Society members, volunteers from local civic organizations,.

Banks has worked at several newspapers, including the Journal Press, where he began as a graphic artist in 1995, and was later promoted to sports editor.

Originally from Lynchburg, VA, Banks attended Howard University.

His passion of news coverage extended to Washington, DC, by covering Broadway plays, such as the Gin Game [Charles Durning, Julie Harris], Fences [James Earl Jones, Leslie Ugams], Lion King, and numerous others over a period of 20 years.

In addition to working for the Washington Redskins public relations office, Banks also spent 15 years on the sidelines as a photographer.

His most cherished moment in journalism was serving as Aretha Franklin’s personal photographer. During the 2008 Presidential inauguration, Banks, with his wife by his side, photographed the legendary singer as she left the Four Season’s Hotel, in Washington, DC., to sing before the world.

Beauregard Farms receives river basin award Beauregard Farms was nominated by the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District for the Rappahannock River Basin Award Recipient at the Annual Meeting of Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

They were awarded as with a plaque, farm sign and Proclamation from the Governor as winners of the recognition.

Beauregard Farms has a long, rich history in Culpeper County, but its legacy of conservation began in 1981 when former farm manager Jim Bowen retired the old moldboard plow.

Cover crops and crop rotation over the course of 20 years has helped rebuild the soil’s organic matter.

In the 1990s, focus turned to pastures and livestock operations. Today, 200 cowcalf pairs are pastured on 400 acres and rotationally grazed through 30 fields.

More than 6.2 miles of streambank are fenced off from livestock, creating a 37.7-acre riparian buffer. In the 2000’s, the farm entered the world of precision agriculture and began using GPS targeting and a variable rate fertilizer spreader.

Soil mapping, soil testing and data from yield monitors created a wealth of information for making better, smarter decisions.

Waterloo Bridge restoration discussed, but not funded

A historic bridge that services residents from both Culpeper and Fauquier counties is being considered for restoration by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

The 139-year-old Waterloo Bridge was closed to traffic Jan. 15, 2014 due to its deteriorated condition.

Built in 1878, the truss structure made of wrought iron was posted for a three-ton maximum vehicle weight prior to its closure. According to VDOT, despite that restriction and numerous repairs, advancing age and weather took its toll on the bridge’s supports.

According to Howard M. Tomlinson, VDOT project manager for the Culpeper District Design Section, the bring saw 680 vehicles each day. Now, that traffic is detoured to Route 211 (Lee Highway) and Route 688 in Fauquier County.

Routes 613 and 622 in Culpeper County handle the detoured traffic.

VDOT recently held a public hearing on the proposed project, Tomlinson said. More than 90 residents from both Culpeper and Fauquier counties have commented on the restoration project, even though

no funding is in place yet.

The project, estimated at an approximate $4 million, can not move forward past the public hearing stage until funding is determined.

Culpeper County administrator John Eggertson seemed skeptical that funding could be found quickly.

Last year was the first time in 15 years Culpeper County did not receive revenue sharing funds, for which they had requested for secondary road paving. Egertson said that it would be surprising if the county received revenue sharing funds for the bridge restoration.

“Culpeper and Fauquier counties have been on the same page about the bridge being rehabilitated and not rebuilt,” he said. “But we don’t have the funds set aside for that and we have no funding source identified.”

The Piedmont Environmental Council said a private donor could contribute $1 million to the project, Tomlinson said, but he has not seen anything in writing about the possible revenue yet.

Egertson said the subject hasn’t been discussed by the Culpeper County BOS in quite some time.

Donna Ellis was drawn to Elvis Presley at a young age.

She recalls a story her mother used to tell, of her as a toddler staying up late one night watching TV. An Elvis movie was on - she surmises it must have been “Jailhouse Rock” or “Love Me Tender” when Ellis made her move.

“I walked over to the TV and kissed it,” she said with a laugh. “I’ve been a lifelong fan ever since.”

She now shares her passion for Elvis with the public, as she is hosting the Memories of Elvis with Classic Country July 29 at Orange County High School as a fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She originally held the fundraiser in 2013, starting with a show in Fredericksburg and Orange. In 2014 and 2015 she moved the show to the State Theatre in Culpeper.

After a year hiatus, she is hosting it from 1 to 5 p.m. with tickets costing $15.

All proceeds go to St. Jude.

The fundraiser started after a visit to Memphis for Elvis Week in 2012.

“I met an Elvis Tribute Artist from England and we were just talking and I always knew that was one of Elvis’ charities was St. Jude’s,” Ellis said “I said ‘I would love to have a show and I would love for you to come.’ He said tell me when and I’ll be there.”

That was Andy Wood, who came in 2013 and 2014.

The Elvis Tribute Artists performing this year are Andy Svreck, from Cressona, Pa. and Michael Hoover.

“I’ve known Michael Hoover since the early 1990s,” Ellis said. “I took my mother down for a show and it was the first time I had ever been to an Elvis show.”

Ellis stopped following the ETAs for a few years, but fell back in with the crowd after her trip to Memphis. It’s Elvis’ generous spirit that keeps drawing people back to him, she thinks.

They also keep giving back, the way that Elvis would have. Ellis wanted to carry on that tradition and chose St. Jude because of the ties the legendary singer had to the hospital. She says that the previous concerts have averaged about $3,000 per show, which has all been donated to the hospital.

This year, the 40th anniversary of Elvis’ death, she will travel to Memphis to personally deliver the check to St. Jude.

The one change Ellis has made this year is to adjust the start time to 1 to 5 p.m.

“I’ve never had it during the day,” Ellis said. “I’m hoping having it during the day, it will give the older crowd a chance to come out.”

Elvis brings people together This year will also feature local author and Culpeper Media Network personality Mark O’Connell.

O’Connell has a unique tie to the concerts - as the one in 2014 at the State Theatre turned out to be the first date for him and his wife Diana - the Commonwealth Attorney for Orange County.

O’Connell laughs about how the arrangement came about, remembering that he ran into Ellis outside of the Orange County Courthouse putting flyers on people’s cars. He was working as a probation officer at the time and had a 1:30 p.m. appointment on the docket.

Ellis asked if he would attend the Elvis concert, but O’Connell scoffed at first, until learning that his future wife was going and

“So Donna and I sort of conspired, I had to be back in court at 1:30, so I told Donna to go tell Diana that you invited me and I’ll know by her demeanor whether she said yes or no,” O’Connell recalled with a chuckle.

“I knew things were going well because Dianna sat next to me and said ‘I heard you want to go to the Elvis concert.’ Though we went as friends, that really turned out to be our first date.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

The couple married on April 25, 2015 - just in time to attend the Elvis concert again.

This year, Ellis approached O’Connell about being the MC and he quickly accepted. Despite not being interested originally, the ETAs that first night in 2014 changed his mind quickly.

“I really enjoyed it,” O’Connell said. “I was a little surprised. I was never a really big Elvis fan, I had family members who were. I watched these guys before and they are so good about what they do.”

It also helps that the concert raises funds for St. Jude.

“I do have a heart for kids,” O’Connell said. “Nobody wants to see kids suffer.

It tells me a lot about Elvis and Danny (Thomas, founder of St. Jude’s) that they always wanted to do something for kids.”

Ellis encourages everyone to come to help donate and to enjoy the memories of Elvis.

“When you you see these Elvis tribute artists in concert, they are so dedicated to what they do, it’s the next closest thing to seeing Elvis,” O’Connell said.

None of the equipment is high powered. Archers use traditional bows and arrows with natural fletching (feathers). Arm guards and finger gloves are recommended to help protect the archer while shooting. The horses that are used have been trained to ride off of your body movements, rather than artificial aids such as reins.

They are also taught that the sights and sounds of flying arrows are nothing to worry about.

There are many styles of courses, featuring targets in varied positions and spacing, making each course more difficult.

Targets may be in front of you, alongside, behind, and even above you.

Some courses create a physical barrier to keep you on track, while others are run in an open field, challenging the horse and rider to communicate with each other through body movements.

It is, after all, not possible to use much else when your hands are full

of bow and arrows. This sport has even adopted a speed-loading drill, in which riders practice pulling an arrow from their quiver, getting it nocked, and shooting without the need to look down.

One of the best attributes to the Mounted Archery community, aside from the comradery, is the fact that anyone is welcome to participate.

There are no restrictions on age, ability, background, or discipline.

Our local club, Roving Knights in Stevensburg, VA, hosts all manner of participants from dressage riders to rodeo queens, Paso Finos to Percherons, and everything in between.

Some participants have more horse experience, some have more archery knowledge, and still others are just starting out in both.

Host facilities usually have spare equipment and seasoned horses for those archers who may not have their

own, or for folks who are curious to try the sport.

Anyone can be a mounted archer as long as they have the desire and are willing to learn. Our number one rule is respect for our horses and each other.

History of Hansbrough’s Ridge In 1812, Peter Hansbrough of “Zhe Hol” purchased “Cole’s Hill Estate,” an acquisition including Cole’s Hill and a milelong wooded ridge tracking south of Cole’s Hill— inevitably called Hansbrough’s Ridge. Peter Hansbrough’s house (no longer standing) was situated on an eastern spur of Cole’s Hill, overlooking Mountain Run. Other old structures encircling Hansbrough’s Ridge were the Fitzhugh home, “Milton Mills” (standing); the Stout place, “Hilldale,” (fell down); the Wishard Doggett and McVeigh houses (destroyed); the Grayson home, “Salubria” (standing); the Norman home, “Fairfield” (gone); Norman’s Mill (destroyed by arson); and “Glen Ella,” (torn down), the Dr. Pembroke Thom residence.

As the Civil War began, troops from both sides marched north and south on the “Old Carolina Road” (Rt. 663), strategically positioned at the western base of Hansbrough’s Ridge. Further, the east-west, “Kirtley’s Rolling Road” interdicted the ridge at the south end and proceeded west into Stevensburg where it intersected with the Old Carolina Road, creating the most significant military intersection in Culpeper County.

The junction of these two major wartime transportation corridors at the immediate western base of the ridge ensured the “high ground to the east” would be heavily fought over and camped upon in the Civil War simply because control of this lofty ridge— commanding the terrain of eastern Culpeper County—was all-important to military commanders. Indeed, numerous forces, both sides, utilized the ridge as an artillery platform, and cavalry battles swayed back and forth on Hansbrough’s western slopes.

Further—and notably—during the Stevensburg phase of the Battle of Brandy Station, June 9, 1863, a

regiment of Confederate troopers affixed themselves facing east upon Hansbrough’s Ridge, ultimately thwarting an entire Federal division’s attempts to hook up with their mates fighting General Jeb Stuart’s Cavalry Division on Fleetwood Hill.

During the winter of 1863-1864, 20,000 soldiers of the Army of the Potomac’s 2nd Corps moved into the Stevensburg area, with the bulk of this command camped for five months on the slopes and crest of Hansbrough’s Ridge.

Corps Headquarters were established, successively, at Dr. Thom’s Glen Ella, and Blucher Hansbrough’s home. The 2nd Corps signal station was established upon Hansbrough’s Ridge, guarded by the nearby 20th Massachusetts Infantry—including Captain Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., future Supreme Court Justice.

A massive trench complex was constructed, and because Union artillery crowned the pinnacle, camping soldiers termed Hansbrough’s Ridge, “The Fort.”

It is singularly noteworthy that trenches; hut-sites; fire-pits; fighting holes; signal platforms; and the remains of military roads yet today courses throughout the crest of the ridge. It is indeed a fact that Hansbrough’s Ridge boasts the largest concentration of untouched Civil War encampment features in the entire United States.

On May 4, 1864 “ the faces and feet” of the Army of the Potomac were suddenly turned to the Rapidan.

Arising from their campsites, soldiers forevermore departed Hanbrough’’s Ridge. But as they resolutely proceeded to The Wilderness, Federal soldiers of course left behind resonant historical memory, and in October 1991—based on a National Register application submitted by the Brandy Station Foundation—the Virginia Board of Historic Resources listed “Hansbrough’s Ridge Winter Encampment District” as a “Virginia Historic Landmark.”

I have been a cynic most of my life, long before it became trendy. I have always believed it is healthy to challenge the status quo, to question, to display a lack of trust in the government or individuals. I've even written books on being cynical at work. I favor the thought that people tend to be selfish in their actions. For most of my life, cynicism was a lonely affair. Talented cynics are rare.

With this last election, what emerged was that many more people jumped on the cynicism bandwagon… in fact, most of the country did.

The questioning of events became something beyond mere questioning or raising of differing perspectives - it became harsh, damning, vicious and even threatening. People confused a healthy skepticism with outright attacks, distortions of the truth, unfounded conjecture, or lies. Little memes put on social media not only attacked candidates, but the people that supported them. In a given week I was indirectly accused, on the net and by quotes from politicians, of being deplorable, a racists, a sexist, a misogynist, and xenophobic (which is true, I am against aliens coming to our planet).

emerged. People showed up at congressional town halls, not to make a point, but to simply be loud and angry.

They confused live meetings with being on the internet. People protested things that were made up. In Berkley Calif., the students rioted against people that did not agree with their ideology.

What happened to "When they go low, we go high?" Berkley only lacks the book burning to be the very fascists they claim they are rising against. The irony is not lost on many of us. The left, in sending messages of "resist" are creating a new political climate where anger and even violence are being ordained by their leadership. Know this, the chant of, “Resist” will eventually lead to violence.

The media has attempted to convert this cynicism into news. They parade pundits and political consultants on the air as “experts.” Almost every political consultant/expert said Trump was not going to win the election right up until midnight the night of. They had one job to do every four years and blew it, by astronomical proportions. Yet how many of them lost their jobs as a result?

None. So why listen to their take on anything? They are literally making stories off of their speculation and guessing, which we already know to be faulty.

The blur between outright lie, misperception, speculation, and reality is a threat to our very way to life. It leaves us with no source for the truth because all truths become suspect. In a world divided by cynics there is no calm voice of reason. All that remains are snarky and biting commentary and

It may be the worst of the Godfather trilogy, but that quote pretty much encapsulates my life lately.

For those unfamiliar, allow me to reintroduce myself. I’m Jeff Say, I’ve lived here since 2005 and I’m the new editor of the Culpeper Times.

It’s a bittersweet moment for me, as I return to the editor position but I do so replacing a mentor and friend.

As Anita Sherman leaves, I hope that I’m able to carry out her caring-style of journalism that endeared her to many.

In that regard, I’m very similar. I want to share the stories Culpeper has to tell and educate the community about issues we face here in the community. While the task can be daunting, I always look forward to meeting my neighbors and telling their tales.

It also will likely mean the return of my column, which I’ve written on and off for 10 years at various publications.

It started on the sports side and then changed more to a lifestyle column, chronicling my life as a firsttime dad figuring out how to be a parent to my daughter Mady.

Mady was shortly joined by her sister Maura and I thought I was done.

Mady is now 7, Maura is 4. We’re out of diapers, baby food and cribs. We were one year away from no longer needing daycare and preschool and I imagined the life of luxury I could

The internet has not elevated us, it has lowered the bar to provide every moron a place to voice their often bizarre frustrations.

Cynicism is a good thing, in proper doses. Thanks to the internet, everyone believes they can thrust their opinions on others. Anyone that does not agree with them is to be bashed in social media. For many, it has driven them to not express any of their personal opinions on anything other than their preference regarding cats, lest they become a target.

This is not a game of "the loudest voice wins." Most of the time the loudest voice is just that - loud (not right). Cynicism has a place in our society. It is good to question authority and our leaders. What isn't healthy is the thinking, "You can only question leaders of the other party." We have gone past cynicism here and have entered the realm of talks of ousting a legitimately elected leader because half the country didn't vote for him. This is a dangerous road these newly branded cynics are goose-stepping down in the name of "resistance."

To the people who have decided to become cynics in the last year - stop it.

Most of you are not doing it well; and this was my thing so it's okay to judge.

Remember, every time you bash a politician you are simultaneously attacking those that voted for him/her.

Well, old Michael Corleone was right again.

In September, we’ll be welcoming our third child to the world - and yes, it’s another girl.

Being that my wife is a teacher, a majority of our life is planned.

Every meal, every vacation, every appointment is carefully scheduled and thought out. There’s a reason I jokingly call my wife Sarah “Captain Planner.”

This was one of the rare times my spontaneity came to pass. I think I’ll be more structured from now on.

Seriously though, we’re all extremely excited - but Maura most of all. I haven’t written as much about my soon-to-be middle child but she fits the bill perfectly. Feisty, headstrong and independent, she’s already planning to take care of the new baby.

I’ll need all the help I can get.

I look forward to seeing everyone and sharing my life with three little girls with you.

This 'Death…' surges to life The shoeshine is scuffed and the smile has turned grim; his shoulders sag and every line of his face and body says “exhaustion.”

Willy Loman has come home from the road.

Arthur Miller’s 1949 hit, “Death of a Salesman” won the Pulitzer Prize for drama, the Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and twelve Tonys, but unlike so many hits of another age, it didn’t fade quietly away. The strange tragedy of the forgotten man trapped inside his own head lives on for the same reason all classics do – it speaks to times other than its own.

This is where I’m going to cut to the chase. Having seen a number (we’ll call it “heaven knows how many”) of shows at the little allvolunteer theatre in Charlottesville, I can say unequivocally that the core cast of “Death of a Salesman” makes this the most powerful performance of a drama I have ever seen on the Live Arts stage.

I have a few quibbles, of course, but those come later. The important point is the success of Debra Drummond and Steve Tharp as Linda and

Willy Loman, and Martyn Kyle and (Culpeper’s own) Taylor Ballard as brothers Biff and Happy. When any combination of these four are engaged in their scenes, the tension is palpable. Yes, they have one of the all-time great scripts to work from, but under direction of William Rough the focus is precise, and the sense of inevitability has the measured progression of a slowing waking volcano.

Kyle’s Willy Loman is the heart of the story from which all turmoil, misplaced dreams, and explosive conflict must radiate. It takes about ten seconds to forget the famous Dustin Hoffman performance and buy into the big rumpled man with the face that looks like it’s been slept in. The sudden stabs of anger alternating with pathetic optimism create a centrifuge of dysfunction that envelopes the Loman family.

But where Linda enables it with desperately hopeful chirping and Happy feeds Willy’s obsession with “big deals”, only Biff refuses to play the game any longer.

But something else is eating Willy, and not just that the buyers are no longer buying and he’s lost his salary.

Fluidly segued flashbacks illuminate not only his hero-worship of brother Ben (Karl Pfefferkorn), who seemed to understand how to make the world

work for him, but the terrible moment when Biff first saw him for who he really was. Willy Loman can no longer fool anyone with his big talk and posturing about important people and being “well liked.” Years of hiding his secret from Linda and pretending it never happened are taking their toll.

His neighbor Bernard (Richard Cooper) is a clearly drawn character with an easy-going sense of himself and the world around him. He doesn’t change even as his offers of help are rebuffed and Willy’s downward spiral becomes more dramatic. His son Bernard (Winston Smith) grows from teenage Biff-worshipper in flashback to adult lawyer on his way to the Supreme Court. As an adult, he’s modest and in control. In the flashbacks, however, the exaggerated “geek-walk” is a distraction in an ensemble that delivers magical realism.

Willy’s confrontation with Howard Wagner (Matt Yohe), the founder’s son, is a masterpiece of contrast, delicately exposing how the cold, sane world of business regards its used-up cogs. When a boss half your age starts calling you “kid”, it’s all over.

The one element that doesn’t measure up to the quality of the play is the scene design. I don’t like to criticize tech in an all-volunteer theatre, but I have seen shows on

The one set area staging that serves this vehicle creates awkwardness that shouldn’t exist.

Biff’s bed is just inches above the refrigerator. Linda and Willy’s bedroom appears to be part of the kitchen. And with no defining walls, one actor had an uncomfortable moment of fumbling with the curtains to exit. I don’t expect Jo Mielziner’s work here, but a little more attention paid to the design could help the flow of an otherwise well-paced show.

For anti-capitalists, “Death of a Salesman” is an indictment of capitalism, a view that stridently overlooks the multiple layers of nature, nurture, and culture in Willy Loman, a man who balances his dreams of fortune on a shoeshine, a smile, and endless self-deception.

Attention must indeed be paid, but that doesn’t mean there is a solution.

In fact, Culpeper native and owner Gayle Coates Dodson has taken 30 years of foodservice experience and created a deli oasis. The restaurant’s mantra, “It not just delicious, its Deli-icious” speaks volumes for the vast assortment of sandwiches, paninis, salads, and ice cream.

Since the day it opened, the restaurant has been well received. “The customers are great - I haven’t had any complaint, Dodson said. “They like the product, and everything is just like the first day we opened.” Dodson’s business has taken a leap of success. Although the restaurant is opened seven days a week, from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Dodson will often close an hour later. Dodson’s business life continues to grow long after the doors close, with numerous catering opportunities.
