Salute to our Veterans Help support the Battleship Texas Foundation Editor's note: Howard Mills, a World War II veteran from Culpeper served on the Battleship Texas. He has asked that we share this letter and information about the foundation and hope you will donate to remember those who served in World War II. Today when a young man turns 18, his birthday is usually one of joy and celebration with family and friends.

When Howard Money Mill turned 18 in June of 1943, he was drafted into the service and appointed to the Navy.

In August, he was given 14 weeks of basic training and then sailed from Pier 51 in NYC aboard the USS Texas.

Like many of his shipmates, he was just a teenager full of excitement and fear going into the unknown perils of war.

The USS Texas would be Howard's home for the next three years. He was assigned to the deck division on the starboard side of the ship. There were no bunk beds available at the time so Howard slept in a hammock for three months. His letters to family were

censored. We can only imagine the challenges of living and working with about 3,300 other young fellows under the age of 21.

Howard's 19th birthday, June 6, 1944 D-Day, began in the heat of the battle.

The USS Texas moved constantly, shelling bunkers on the beach and was then asked to take out a church steeple where Germans were sniping troops on the beach.

The ship's gun range came up short, so the captain flooded the bow to raise the aft guns out of the water ... mission accomplished!

Afterward the Texas and her men stayed in Normandy for 52 difficult days, continuing to fight while picking up wounded rangers and German prisoners of war.

This is just one part of the history of the USS Texas and sailors like Howard.

They would go to the Pacific Theatre to take on another enemy in Okinawa.

It was a long, hard three years for

CCVFD parade and carnival this week

The Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department Co. 1 kicks off its biggest fundraising effort of the year May 24 with its annual carnival and parade.

The fundraiser helps pay for fire trucks and equipment and the volunteer fire department has a new engine purchase planned in the near future.

According to Joey Perryman, chairman of the carnival for CCVFD, a new pumper truck purchase is in the early stages and is expected to be completed by mid-September.

According to CCVFD Co. 1 chief Kenny Mills, the new truck will cost between $700,000 and $800,000. The department recently secured a loan for $400,000 so they are hoping the money raised from weekly bingo and the carnival will help cover the other half.

The truck, which will be called Engine I, will be used for structure fires and is replacing a truck that is 20 years old.

“It helps a lot in purchasing new equipment,” Perryman said of the annual carnival.

Mills said that the department covers about 80-85 percent of the county on fire calls so they put a lot of miles on the pumper. The trucks are on a 20 year rotation, so the next replacement will be needed for another pumper in 2025.

The fire department also hosts bingo every Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. to help defray costs.

Last year the department responded to almost 800 calls.

The carnival will be hosted from 6-10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 6-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets for those times are $15 for all-you-canride. A Saturday matinee will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. and tickets for those times are $10.

The rides are provided by Valley Amusements and the event will be held at the Culpeper Agricultural Enterprise grounds, located at 220 James Monroe Highway.

In addition to the carnival, CCVFD will host its annual parade at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25 beginning at the intersection of Piedmont and Main streets.

Main Street will be closed from the intersection of Route 522 to the intersection of Route 3 during the parade.

As of Monday, 151 entries have registered for the parade.

Piedmont Publishing Group promotes three Rappahannock Media’s Piedmont Publishing Group, parent company of the Culpeper Times, last week made changes to its organizational structure, promoting two local leaders.

Tom Spargur was named Publisher/Group Sales Director of the Culpeper Times, while Jeff Say was named Editor of the paper.

Jim Kelly was named Sales Director, Media Tom Spargur Operations of Piedmont Publishing’s magazine group based in Warrenton.

Kelly will oversee the sales operations of the Piedmont Virginian Magazine and the Jeff Say Warrenton, Broad Run and Haymarket Lifestyle magazines and their associated digital sites.

Piedmont Publishing Group owns the Rappahannock News, Jim Kelly the Culpeper Times, the Piedmont Virginian Magazine and the Warrenton, Broad Run and Haymarket Lifestyle magazines.

Spargur has been working for the company as group sales director and was named Publisher for the Culpeper Times and will remain group sales director for the newspaper division.

Say has been with the Culpeper Times since 2015, serving as graphic designer. He has previously worked in the community as Community Editor and Sports Editor of the Culpeper StarExponent.

The developer in charge of building a new Hampton Inn along U.S. 29 is expecting to break ground by the end of May. Kord Pfeifle, project manager for Hospitality Builders, Inc., based out of Rapid City, S.D., said that the survey on the land beside 84 Lumber had been completed for some time and they hope to break ground in the next couple of weeks.

“This project started about eight years ago before we took over the project, I was handed it about a month ago,” Pfeifle said.

The four-story, 98-unit hotel with an indoor pool will likely take about 10 months to complete, Pfeifle said.

HBI is the contractor and is looking for subcontractors to frame up the building. Materials used will be provided by 84 Lumber.

HBI has built more than 500 hotels and motels and is licensed in all 50 states.

This is the first hotel they’ve built in Culpeper.

The contractor has been operating since 1975, “using the most efficient construction methods and best material available without compromising quality at economical costs,” according to its website.

Sam McLearen, director of Culpeper County Planning and Zoning, said that the site plan has been approved since February 2008.

“They’ve been going through some fits and starts for a number of years,”McLearen said.

The utilities have been in place for years and the entrance and drive is the same as the adjacent Storeland facility. The Hampton Inn acreage is 2.84 acres while the rest of the property in the area is owned by Storeland, which is another 6.02 acres.

The Hampton Inn reapplied for a zoning permit in May 2016, and McLearen said the permit is good as long as they are actively pursuing the project. The area is zoned for as a commercial services district, which is a mix of commercial and industrial.

The original site plan was for two hotels, but just the one Hampton Inn is planned for now.

➤ 9th Annual Aging Together Senior Prom celebrates senior citizens

It all starts with a couple of steps to a favorite song or perhaps a little shuffle.

Then like magic a dance erases the aches of aging quicker than any medicine. As children people learn to dance before they understand what they are dancing for even before they understand music.

People intrinsically know that it just feels nice to move to the rhythm.

The Austrian writer Vicki Baum once wrote, “There are shortcuts to happiness and dancing is one of them.” This was certainly the case at the 9th Annual Senior Prom sponsored by Aging Together held last Saturday. The theme was a Hawaiian-style “Luau” and well over a hundred senior citizens from across five counties enjoyed the rejuvenating power of music, dancing, food and friendship inside the gymnasium of Culpeper Christian School.

Seated by the front door wearing a necklace of blue flowers, floral dress and grass shirt was Freda Tarza, 76, of Warrenton.

She greeted local senior citizens with a welcoming smile as they entered the decorated gym. She is a self described “Jersey gal” who loves to dance and have fun. She is the perfect ambassador of fun and she’s been the life of the party for eight-out-nine years the Senior Prom has been in existence.

Tarza is a whirlwind of energy. She dances to every song and even manages to teach other attendees how to limbo, twist,

Between dances Tarza requested an anchor tattoo painted on her arm to honor the military from Sandy’s Face Painting, a local business that annually supports the prom.

“See my anchor with the flowers? It honors the Navy and all the people serving in the military,” said Tarza. “You have to live your life and have fun.”

Event volunteers and local businesses all joined together for a festive afternoon.

The event offered food, a photo booth, live DJ, face-painting and door prizes. The prom concluded with the selection of a king and queen of the prom.

In the grand finale Jack Clatterbuck, 73, of Unionville and Bess Lucking, 91, of Sperryville were crowned king and queen of the 2017 Senior Prom respectively.

The queen nearly missed her own selection.

“Funny thing is I was ready to leave a little early to get home and feed my two cocker spaniels Rocko and Cloe,” said Lucking with a wide smile. “I’ve come every year and I always have a good time. I was completely surprised when I was selected as the queen.”

The king was also elated to preside over an event that has brought so much joy to area seniors.

“It’s a wonderful prom… it always is.

I’ve been attending for the last four years,” said Clatterbuck proudly sporting his newly earned crown. “I hope they keep this event going—it’s a great experience and so much fun for all the senior citizens in our area.”

Each year the Senior Prom has gained popularity among senior citizens in the

NEWS five-county area. The dance organized by Aging Together is supported by families, individuals, non-profits and businesses.

The event is also a labor of love for the Culpeper Town Police and volunteers from all the area’s senior groups including a few from neighboring Orange, Rappahannock, Madison and Fauquier Counties.

"Another great Senior Prom—it’s our ninth! Special thanks to our fantastic committee led by Mary Ellen Clark of Hope in Home Care. Because of our generous sponsors and enthusiastic volunteers, over 100 seniors danced, ate, listened to music and had a fun time at Culpeper Christian School. We loved the enthusiasm of our seniors who did the limbo, electric slide and chicken dance with great gusto. Age is just a number" One of the largest groups in attendance was the Silver Club, a Culpeper Parks and Recreation sponsored program. The group had four tables for its members. Among the group were at least five former kings and queens of the prom in past years.

“We will be back next year,” said club member Pat Kosalinski, of Culpeper.

Most attendees carpooled to the event with friends and there were many opportunities to meet other people from seniororiented groups and clubs.

“This is the fourth time I’ve attended the senior prom. I love dancing and spending time with my friends,” said Jackie Porter, of Woodville. “I’m here with my oldest son Jeff today and we’ve had so much fun.”

As the final songs emanated trough the gym a familiar lady in a blue dress took a few minutes to teach two young volunteers how to swing dance.

“I have to teach these young fellas how to do the swing,” said Tarza. “Their future dates will thank me.”

The treefrogs are calling, and I must go

Much of the spring, I have felt like a private eye specializing in divorce cases — stalking animals, camera in hand, to try to catch them in flagrante delicto.

One evening last week, it was the calling of gray treefrogs that put me on the hunt for mating herps once again.

I had heard the slow, deep trills of at least two treefrogs calling, so I grabbed my camera, cell phone and a flashlight and walked down the hill from my house toward the garage. With the recent deluge of rain and the direction of the calls, I was pretty sure the frogs were breeding in my landlord’s small fishing boat down there, which had collected water in its bow.

It was a warm night, with the humidity rising, a sign of temps also on the rise, reaching the 90s by mid-week.

of blooming blackberry, Japanese honeysuckle and multiflora rose.

The light was almost gone by the time I reached the boat. As I crept up to it, the calling stopped. Shining my flashlight around inside, I saw a gray treefrog, about two inches long, sitting quietly on some plywood at the bottom, near the water-filled bow. I took a few shots in the dark, trying to hold my flashlight on the frog while focusing my camera, which did not result in the best shots.

I stepped back, listening in the growing darkness for the two sets of calls to start again, to try to pinpoint the other frog’s location, recording the calls with an app on my phone. When the calls restarted, I checked the boat again, finding the frog I had photographed was now sitting in the water at the shallow edge of the water. Although I could see the air sac around in its throat fill and empty, no sound came out.

This frog also looked a bit fat, and only males call, so could it have been a gravid (egg-filled) female instead? I finally determined that one of the frogs

Giving up, I decided to let the little herps get on with their business and wandered home, savoring the soft night air and the sweet smells wafting through it.

In checking out the boat daily since that night, I didn’t find any eggs. By last Saturday night (May 20), the temperature had dropped into the 50s, and the treefrogs had gone silent. My landlord finally needed to use the boat, so I asked if he could put some water in a large, shallow, plastic tub that I use for gardening and place it in the forest edge near the boat, which he did. As I’m writing this on Monday (May 22), the frogs are still silent, and there’s no sign of breeding activity at the tub or boat, which has now collected more water from today’s rain. Perhaps only males had shown up and, failing to attract females, had quit for now. Or perhaps, the fat frog I had seen had been a female and she had decided not to mate, for whatever reason.

In the meantime, I worked on expanding my skimpy knowledge of treefrogs, finding that we have two species here in Virginia that are gray: gray treefrog (Hyla versicolor) and Cope's gray treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis).

The former is more common and the only one I’ve ever heard calling where I live, in Rappahannock County. This jibes with Virginia Fish and Wildlife Information Service (VaFWIS, at vafwis.dgif.virginia. gov/fwis) distribution maps for the commonwealth’s six native treefrog species.

H. versicolor has a slower, deeper trill than Cope’s, as can be heard on the recording I made (hear online at rappnews/wildideas), and has a white mark under each eye, which shows clearly on the frog I photographed.

Another visual cue is a bright orange patch on the concealed surfaces of this species’ hind legs, which barely shows in one photo I took and which Cope’s does not have. H. versicolor also has twice the chromosomes of Cope’s, which keeps the two species from interbreeding. Like our native wood frog, the gray treefrog has glycerol, a kind of antifreeze, in its blood,

HOME & GARDEN enabling it to survive freezing. Virginia’s four other native treefrog species, which are not gray, are all either further east, south or both.

While gray treefrogs are often heard in our area, “this species is not often seen on the ground or near the water's edge except during the breeding season,” VaFWIS explains. Instead, it “tends to forage while in small trees or shrubs near to or standing in water.” Special sticky pads on the frog’s feet enable it to cling easily to even vertical surfaces, such as tree trunks. And its mottled coloring (light gray with dark gray, brown or black patterns) camouflages it. It can also change color rapidly, tending to darken when its surrounding environment is dark or cold.

The other amazing thing about H. versicolor is the loudness of its voice, considering its size (1.25-2.5 inch).

From a few feet away, it can be almost deafening.

As Robert Stebbins and Nathan Cohen write in “A Natural History of Amphibians,” the high volume of one male can drive off another male. They also note that this species expends more energy than other cold-blooded vertebrates to generate a remarkably loud call to attract mates. Perhaps this is because gray treefrogs are terrestrial, and widely scattered, so a male must try hard to attract a mate to whatever small pool he finds that is suitable for breeding.

This species also has an “explosive bark,” the authors write, which in one study was shown to have “a repellent effect” on northern tailed shrews, one of the frog’s predators.

The gray treefrog’s breeding season is long. While sources vary on this, breeding may start as early as March and run as late as August. Up here on the mountain, I recorded the first sustained calling on May 5. Removing the stigma of mental health and addiction

You don’t have to suffer in silence.

That was the message Tuesday evening at Open Minds: Talking together about mental health and addiction.

Hosted by Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center at Germanna Community College’s Daniel Center, the seminar was an opportunity to invite community members to talk about a subject that is often overlooked or not willing to be discussed - mental health and addiction.

Spearheaded by Sharon Clark, owner of Pepperberries and a board member of the Culpeper Medical Center, the event brought together 31 exhibitors and multiple mental health professionals to talk about warning signs of mental illness and addiction and how to bring the subject out into the light.

Clark, who vividly and openly shared her story of being on antidepressants, talked about how a friend had reached out to her for help. Her friend’s family member had attempted suicide three times and the family didn’t know what to do or where to turn. Clark admitted neither did she.

So that’s when she began meet-

ing with groups from Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services, spearheaded by Alan Rasmussen and began formulating a plan to help the community actually discuss mental health.

Hence, Open Minds was born.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Clark said during her emotional speech. “Treat each other the way you want to be treated. It’s OK to talk about our feelings. It’s OK to ask for help.”

Dr. Karyn O’Brien, a clinical psychologist and senior director of behavioral health services at Novant Health UVA Health System, said that erasing the negative perception and stigma of mental health is key to getting people help.

“There is a lot of shame associated with the disease of mental health and addiction,” O’Brien said. “Part of what we’re doing here tonight is opening the door of communication to let people know this is a medical disease just like diabetes or cancer.”

She said that people know that it’s recommended to visit your doctor once a year for a medical check up or twice a year for a dental visit. However, there is no guideline for having a mental health checkup.

She recommended that people open up to their medical providers to

“We have to start the conversation,” she said.

More than 100 people filled Germanna Tuesday, talking to health care professionals and hopefully starting the conversation. Sprinkled throughout the room were organizations who deal with depression, suicide and substance abuse. O’Brien pointed to the important partnerships with those coalitions through RRCS. “It’s beyond essential, it’s critical,” O’Brien said. “We can’t do it by our-

selves.”

It all starts with talking, she stressed. Pointing out that there is no “one size fits all” treatment plan for mental health and addiction.

Tuesday night was a step in the right direction, to encourage people to start talking about a subject that has been swept under the rug for too long.

“It means everything,” O’Brien said. “If a person can walk out of here empowered to talk about their mental health and addiction concerns we’ve helped. We want the entire community to be able to talk about it and not feel awkward and uncomfortable.”

VIEWS Final Gifts My life’s journey met with momentous happenings last week. Let’s start with Thursday.

As a reporter and journalist I pride myself on being an effective communicator, a good conversationalist and connecting the vast array of information that is received on a near daily basis. You put all the cards on the table and assess what is rumor, hearsay, verifiable information and established fact.

Then you discard, rearrange, and put together words in ways that are hopefully compelling and of interest to your readers once you pen your piece.

When I went into a meeting with our publisher Thursday morning and he told me that I was being laid off for fiscal and company reorganization reasons I hadn’t put together the dots.

I didn’t see it coming. I was no longer the editor.The meeting was amiable and without drama. While I accepted the dynamics of the decision knowing well that over the years newspapers have suffered from dwindling ad revenues, cut back circulations and downsized newsrooms, the result was that within

Marshall Keene receives another endorsement Marshall Keene is honored to have received an endorsement from Retired Spotsylvania Sheriff Howard Smith.

half an hour I was taking artwork off the walls of my office, packing up books, photographs and an array of desk ornamentation and plants.

I was no longer the editor I had taken the hit well and was functioning. As the hours and days passed I realized that I had been hit and the wound was bleeding and I was hurting aware that not only was my time with this paper over (it would have been nine years in November) but 17 years of community journalism starting in Fauquier, moving to Rappahannock and now in Culpeper.

There’s a deathlike quality when something ends. You find yourself grieving and feeling mournful. You need to give grief its due, then brush it off so that your vision doesn't become permanently clouded.

It didn’t take long for the clouds to part.

I started to hear from many expressing their shock and sadness at my departure and thanking me for my time spent in the community. With each message, I smiled more and more knowing that a chord had been struck, relationships forged and that all would be right with the world again. Another door would open.

Now, let’s back up a few days before last Thursday to Mother’s Day. Our oldest, a daughter, Sophia, presented me with a small box and big smile. She was staff have greatly benefited from his contributions. His contributions to the community are numerous and are vital in keeping a positive community/law enforcement relationship.

Marshall was an SRO at Massaponax HS in 2003 and was on the football coaching staff until he relocated to Culpeper. His presence as a law enforcement officer at Massaponax HS helped provide a safe environment for the students and faculty, which is critical for a good learning environment. The students did not fear him, but respected his position. He was easy to approach by students and staff. He took the time to counsel students and was respected for his fairness.

And the tears flowed.

Our firstborn is having her first child. Anticipated delivery in December, my birth month.

Our middle son Douglas and his wife Rose have gifted us with two beautiful grandbabies - Maria and Piers. Now we anticipate the arrival of Sophia and David’s baby.

So within a week’s period I learned that our daughter is having her first child and that I had lost my job and do need to find another.

I’ve always believed and been nourished by the notion that there are no ends, just a series of new beginnings.

As I write these words, I want you to know how much I have appreciated your gifts to me.

Your trust, your confidence, your patience and understanding, your support and your conversations allowing me to share your stories, events, and opinions.

This chapter of my life is finished but the book isn’t over.

A job ends but a new life announced.

For me, the new life, the new beginning is the bigger news.

‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ Has the Spirit I don’t know who the target audience for Signature’s resurrection of “Jesus Christ Superstar” is, but I do know who it isn’t: busloads of Baptists from the back country.

The Andrew Lloyd Webber / Tim Rice 1971 rock opera centering on the last week of Jesus’ life was never intended to proselytize, but to contemplate the man behind the stories.

Special focus on Judas and his view of Jesus and the direction of his ministry, as well as the inclusion of modern references guaranteed that, like Jesus himself, the Broadway show and later movie would get plenty of attention but not always adoration.

Signature has chosen this dynamic show to close its 2016/17 season as a cap to its “tradition of reimagining musicals in…. intimate playing spaces.” Mostly it works, but there is one serious drawback: Sound.

When the Webber-Rice team first presented the concept of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, it was in album form – not even a stage show. As a rock opera, (all dialogue is “sung through”), one would suppose that words are important. Being able to hear and understand those words

is equally important.

The Max Theatre within Signature isn’t a large space, and with a live orchestra, singers in head mics, and sometimes standing microphones added, sound levels were frequently enough to blast one out of the seat. Ari Wilford as Judas Iscariot was perhaps the worst offender in this category for shrieking his songs. Add a tortured electric guitar to the mix and there were some truly unbearable moments. Note to Mr. Wilford: volume does not automatically equate to emotion.

But I still have a shred of hearing left in my right ear. Maybe he wasn’t trying hard enough.

Seriously. Orchestrated songs sung by the full ensemble – “What’s the Buzz”, “Everything’s Alright”, “This Jesus Must Die” to name a few could just as well have been nursery rhymes for all the clarity of the lyrics. Neither my companion for the evening nor I could understand a word, and I did see one gentleman fumbling with his hearing aid. This incoherence means that the show must depend on an audience of people who have seen it before. I can’t imagine that lyricist Tim Rice would be pleased.

Nevertheless, there are some positive notes.

The cast, all volcanic energy, rocks Karma Camp’s athletic choreography, and under the direction of Joe Calarco, still maintains individual focus about

who they are and what they’re doing. I suspect there were many cast discussions concerning what the person of Jesus must have meant for the apostles, the ordinary citizen of Israel, and the Jewish leaders.

Playing Jesus is no easy role, but Nicholas Edwards hits the right emotional notes.

In a play focused on his humanity, Jesus’ strengths, troubles, and doubts are made clear.

When the shouting of songs pauses, there are some lovely respites. Natascia Diaz as Mary Magdalene shows off a voice of crystal purity in “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”. Bobby Smith as Pontius Pilate meditating on what it all means in “Pilate’s Dream” delivers the force but not the reflective quality of the song. One number that is easily understood and communicates all the power written into it is “The Temple” where the lame, halt, and blind crawl to Jesus for release. “King Herod’s Song” on the other hand, is memorable from the movie for its over-the-top sacrilege and cabaret-style revelry, but here, with Sherri Edelen as King Herod, comes off as muddied. “Could We Start Again Please?” with Mary, Peter and the apostles is one of the beautiful moments of the night.

In keeping with the modern approach written into it, Frank Labovitz’s costuming is “college kid” bordering on “boho” – except for Pilate and Calaphas (Thomas Simpson) in business suits.

And the four entrances, one at each end, suggest biblical-era tombs while projected images around the doors add important information about the location of each scene. Calarco has chosen to update the show with projections of the decidedly unChristian atrocities visited on the world in our present age – nothing that should surprise anyone.

“Jesus Christ Superstar” was never intended to be a vehicle on any side of the religious debate, but a thoughtful questioning and examination of a life that has mystified, gratified, and inspired millions. However, in its quest to create an experience of power and immediacy, Signature has sacrificed clarity to thunderous volume and energy to exhausting pace. The good news is that it wouldn’t take a miracle to fix it.

Construction has ended and saw dust swept up at the Sperryville Corner Store, which now counts four spaces under one roof for dining and provisioning needs.

Just weeks after the Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen (RPK) opened to much fanfare — and subsequent rave reviews — in the rear of the historic general store, the Batchelor Family of owners has cut the ribbon for bar Francis, an intimate watering hole where Rudy’s Pizza was once located.

There are several “Francis Originals” and “Francis Classics” cocktails to choose from bearing intriguing if not familiar names like the Spirit of Sperryville, Appalachian Aviation, Rush River Aged Negroni, Rock Mills Goes French, and Hanky Panky, among others.

When we stopped in recently Colleen O’Bryant of Wild Roots Apothecary (WRA) was behind the bar expertly mixing botanical elixirs into the drink recipes, creating delicious and eye-appealing collaborations. Take the non-alcoholic Subtle Vacancy, consisting of strawberries, cucumber, lemon, verbena, WRA rosehip hibiscus, lemon juice, and soda.

“Bar Francis is a collaborative effort with Colleen,” says Craig Batchelor. “Colleen is the mixologist genius behind our cocktail menu. She is brilliant.

her own riff on all the stand-by classics, plus a lot of completely unique cocktails that capture and express her creativity. We are lucky to have her as part of our team.”

Francis also offers an impressive wine selection (not surprising, given Craig’s experience in the vineyards) as well as bottled and draft beers, including wheat, pale and amber ales, dark beers and Belgian styles.

As for the name Francis, the highway marker near the junction of Main Street and U.S. 211 in Sperryville explains that the town was laid out by Francis Thornton Jr. in 1817. Then again, there were no less than six Francis Thorntons associated with Rappahannock County between 1731 and 1840.

In fact, in 1731 Francis II was granted a patent

by King George II for 3,000 acres of land along what is now the Thornton River, including the stretch that flows through Sperryville right past bar Francis.

“Naming our bar ‘Francis’ is a way of bringing that history into the modern conversation,” Batchelor notes. “I hope everyone asks ‘why the name Francis?’ because there’s a great story to tell.”

Concludes Batchelor: “Bar Francis was designed to be small, special and sophisticated; a place where one immediately gets the sense that everything is well thought out and crafted with care. It’s warm wood finishes give a natural, clean and slightly old-fashioned industrial feel. At night it has a wonderful yellow glow from the low-watt Edison bulb chandelier. We take our drinks seriously and we are unabashedly geeky about what goes into them. We’ve got all the usual basics covered, but we’ve also got some wonderfully unusual and unique things for adventurous drinkers.”

RAVEN'S NEST CELEBRATES 10 YEARS. For 10 years, Raven’s Nest Coffee House has been feeding the people. For owner Jessica Hall, that doesn’t always involve edibles.“It’s not just food and drink that goes into sustaining the people,” she said. “It’s more than just what goes into your mouth.” Opened on April 26, 2007, Raven’s Nest has become a staple on the lower end of East Davis Street. Since Clark Hardware closed last year, the coffee shop is the anchor of the neighborhood now. A frequent stop for regulars and tourists alike, Raven’s Nest - called as such for its use of Raven’s Brew coffee - prides itself on consistency. Once located across the street at the current Moving Meadows Bakery, Raven’s Nest has been at its current location at 215 East Davis for six years. During its existence, Hall has seen the fluctuations of the community and has adjusted accordingly.“Like our country, our community is constantly in flux,” Hall said. “The street has become a conduit, but since Claude closed, it’s become more feminine.”While online shopping has curtailed some retail, her business has remained strong as the restaurants on East Davis Street have proved to be a tourist attraction. And people are always looking for a good strong cup of Joe and a tasty tidbit. Most of her fare is homemade or close to it. She makes her soups from scratch.

During a recent conversation, she worked on making crusts for pies. Hall has always had a diverse resume, working as an art director for 18 years, serving in sales and selling her own gourmet jelly for 14 years. So her eclectic background leads to an eclectic clientele.

Karen Crim Sullivan, age 59, passed away on Friday, May 12th at Inova Loudoun Hospital. Karen was born on November 29th, 1957 in Leesburg, VA to the late Edgar (Ted) Crim & Jacqueline Crim. Karen has been a resident of Fauquier county for 27 years.

Karen is survived by her three daughters, Kelsey Sullivan, Ashley Sullivan, and Molly Sullivan of Warrenton; her Grandson, Kade Gregg of Warrenton; her mother, Jacqueline Crim of Hillsboro; her brother, Edgar “Ed” Crim of Hillsboro; her nephews, Zach Crim and his wife Christen Crim, Hunter Crim, and Brad Crim of Culpeper; and her great niece, Harper Crim.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, May 16th at Hall Funeral Home Purcellville, VA. Services were held at Hall Funeral home on Wednesday, May 17th.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made at United Bank of Purcellville, VA. Checks can be made out to the Sullivan Family Memorial Fund.

JROTC AWARDS: On Friday, May 19, CCHS Marine Corps JROTC participated in The Physical Fitness National Competition at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Culpeper received 4 individual awards; Kaitlyn Snuffer and Alexis Banks both received the silver medal for second place honors and Trinity Berry received the gold medal for first place. Trinity Berry was also crowned the female first place overall in the National Competition and she received a $500 check from the Marine Corps League. The Team members were: Breanna Means, Alexis Banks, Kaitlyn Snuffer, Jharna East, Trinity Berry. Sgt. Major Allen L. Tanner will stand detached from Culpeper County High School on June 30 and report to Mountain View High School in Stafford County. Tanner thanks the MCJROTC students and all of the Culpeper family for five great years.

WELCOME: New signs were placed Monday on Route 522 North and Business 29, as visitors come into the town of Culpeper. The signs touts Culpeper’s designation as a Virginia Main Street community and encourages visitors to come downtown.
