Dr. Hortense Hinton-Jackson is a native of Culpeper and graduated from GW Carver Regional High School. Her career spanned 40 years as an administrator Hintonin higher education Jackson before she retired in 2012. Dr. HintonJackson served two terms as a gubernatorial appointee to the State Equal Employment Opportunity Council.

In Culpeper, she has served on many community service projects with the Museum of Culpeper History and Culpeper Library, as President of the local NAACP branch, Women in Worship Ministries, and GW Carver Regional HS Alumni Association, the Trustee Board of Free Union Baptist Church, and as a gospel and jazz vocalist.

Dr. Hinton-Jackson is listed in “Who’s Who Among AfricanAmericans.” She has been a presenter, keynote speaker and workshop facilitator at local, regional and national conferences on education, African-American history, leadership development, personal and spiritual growth and cultural diversity. She continues to serve as a mentor and coach to former students and young professionals. She is the mother of three and grandmother of eight.

Last week we had an unseasonal snow storm. I went out in hopes of finding someone who I could shoot in the small amount of snow that we got. In a year of so little snow I thought it important to record the event. It was my lucky day because I ran into Taylor Stynes at the Post Office. Taylor is a Jr. Kindergarten teacher (that is 5 year olds) at the Culpeper Baptist School.

She was most willing to drive over to her school where there was a hill of snow and where we could take this picture. Pearl Sample Math Specialist Tasha Fitzgerald recently received the William C. Lowry Mathematics Specialist of the Year Award. The presentation took place during the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Conference (VCTM) in Harrisonburg on March 10.

At Elkwood, caring for your pets is their passion

The building that houses this group of veterinarians isn’t that large but the work done on the inside by its team of doctors and veterinary technicians outweighs its physical size. This June Elkwood Animal Hospital will celebrate its two-year anniversary at its current location on James Madison Highway.

Serving the communities of Culpeper and Fauquier, they are located close to Elkwood, Remington, and Brandy Station.

In the business of caring for animals for several decades, Dr. Lisa Gibson knew early on when she was in middle school that she wanted to become a veterinarian. All those dogs, cats, horses, and chickens that occupied their acreage were close to her hand and heart.

Starting with Compassion Animal Hospital in 1994, clients from this area were happy when she and her husband Don, who handles the business/finance end, decided to open a location in Elkwood. ➤ See Animal, Page 5

However, if more advanced care is necessary including orthopedic surgical services they can do that as well. They can also provide cold laser therapy, ultrasound and oral surgery.

Bringing a smile to her face, Dr. Gibson is proud of the fact that their daughter Julia, who graduated from Virginia Tech in 2014, made the decision to join the practice in May of 2015. After graduating with her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine, she had worked at an animal practice in West Virginia but has been very happy to do what she loves closer to home.

Beyond dogs and cats, Dr. Julia Gibson will travel to area farms to treat ailing horses, goats, sheep and pigs. “If you are dealing with a larger animal, it’s simply easier to go there,” said the younger Gibson.

Both mother and daughter believe strongly in prevention and keeping the animals in their care healthy. Each month a different aspect of animal health care is emphasized like learning about Lyme Disease or good dental care.

Dr. Lisa Gibson says that they see a lot of animals that are overweight and stressed the problems and challenges that animals face if weight is a factor. She laughs. “I know...we just love them so much and they are part of our families and it’s natural to want to give them treats or snacks from the table.”

“We want to keep your animals well,” stressed Gibson, “so we try to educate and make folks more aware about preventative care.”

Being part of the community they serve is important to both. As such, Dr. Lisa Gibson or a member of their staff will frequent the Culpeper Animal Shelter.

➤ Nursery, from Page 6 your children and grandchildren, his business may have skipped a generation in terms of ownership, but now it has landed in the lap of 26-year-old Paul Hutcheson and his grandfather couldn’t be more pleased.

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” he said with a smile that said it all.

As a youngster Paul would help in the greenhouse and Carl Stafford, who was on hand from the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office, reflected on the young man that he remembered training in a master gardener class. He watched over the years as the elder Hutcheson’s fondness for growing and cultivating things had a ‘trickle down’ effect on the young boy who eventually headed off to Virginia Tech to study, what else, but horticulture.

In 2011, Paul returned to the family business and the following year, in January 2012, Mason officially sold it to his grandson Paul.

Never far from the operation, the elder Hutcheson admits that he helps out watering and is always there for advice. And his pleasant personality is a fan favorite for locals when they stop by.

“We’ve got a farmer here,” said Stafford noting the role that the younger Hutchesons play in developing other farmers and bringing in new technologies to the business.

“Horticulture is a big part of the local industry...they are going to take us to the next level,” added an enthusiastic Stafford.

Steve Walker, who represents the East Fairfax District on the county board of supervisors, was there. I felt his presence had more to do with knowing this family and the beauty of their homegrown plants than in an official capacity. He was energized and eager to share firsthand knowledge about the quality of what you will find there and more importantly the quality of the folks who are behind the garden center’s success.

- something that he believes in and takes an active role in supporting.

Mayor Mike Olinger was there, again, brimming with good cheer and acknowledging what a wonderful place Windmill Heights is.

Meghan Taylor, who sits on town council, ended up purchasing a jade plant. Okay, I ended up with one as well. It is now sitting on my desk.

Absolutely stunning and coming along with good advice that hopefully I won’t do it in. They are a succulent after all and don’t need to be drowned in water.

Susan Keller was there. The Friends of the Library will be sponsoring their annual pansy and plant sale soon and Windmill Heights will be providing the product.

The Chamber’s Sophie Hudson, Sandy Boone and Martha Sanford are always bubbly at these events, thanking folks for coming as they spread their own brand of good cheer.

Aside from all the accolades and well wishes which are always welcome there is more that happens when the community gathers to honor one of its own.

There is a sincere warmth and outpouring of love that, for me, mirrored the affection that was given to that young infant as he was cradled in his mother’s arms. That kind of comfort and security that comes from the knowledge that you are on a path with a heart and that makes it easy to follow.

When asked how he felt about owning this business for the past five years, it didn’t take Paul long to respond. “I enjoy it very much...I’m making a living doing what I love to do.”

And that he is.

The business is literally growing with expansion into more perennials, tropicals and a larger selection of annuals. If you are new to the county and haven’t discovered them, check out their gardens. If you are a longtime customer, congratulate them. And if you want to bask in the beauty of the earth’s bounty, stop by for a tour. You won’t be disappointed.

The National Garden Bureau has announced that this year, 2017, is “The Year of the Pansy.”

HOME & GARDEN Winter survival for gardeners GARDENING GURU

So for those of us who long to get back into the dirt, good gardening magazines can help us wait it out till spring by bringing the recollection of the pleasure of the garden back to us and helping us plan for the upcoming season. Gardening publications are entertaining and informative all year round, but I find that I read them more thoroughly and even catch up on past issues during the winter. I’d like to share some of my favorites to which I have subscribed.

Fine Gardening This one is my favorite, and I continue to learn from this publication. I stumbled upon this particular one accidentally; my husband bought a subscription from a kid going door to door raising money and gave it to me as a gift. Many publications start to get repetitive,

but Fine Gardening still manages to show me something new with every issue.

Its content ranges from really useful garden tips to plant ideas for specific regions to profiles of prominent gardens and gardeners to beautiful photo essays of different gardens. Often included are features on a specific plant with a discussion of all of the different cultivars (Oxford Dictionary defines a cultivar as “a plant variety that has been produced in cultivation by selective breeding”), accompanied by photos of ideal specimens. I didn’t know there was a yellow Magnolia, but once Fine Gardening profiled them, now, of course, I have one. Every issue has a feature called “Expert Picks” in which garden experts from each of seven areas of the country work around a common theme and recommend three or four plants that do well in their planting zone. For example, a recent issue has “Favorite Native Plants.” Blair Durant, from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, suggests four perennials for the southeast region:

Each plant has a photo, latin name and a detailed description. I read all of the country’s regions because it is interesting to see what grows well in other areas. Fine Gardening hits all of the right notes for me.

English Garden Rob Woodman, formerly of Merrifield Garden Center, recommended English Garden to me as the absolute best magazine to read to see beautiful pictures of beautiful gardens, and he was right. English Garden is garden eye candy. ➤ See Winter, Page 9

However, given the vastly different climates, some plants that flourish in England’s moist, cool growing conditions will not thrive here in Virginia. So, even while disappointed that these incredible landscapes can’t be recreated in my backyard, I can fully enjoy them in these pages. So, if you have not spent time with English Garden, now is the perfect time to brew a cup of tea and spend some time in fantasyland.

Virginia Gardener This publication is filled with good, meaty information. General gardening articles applicable in most areas of the U.S. are complemented by articles specific to Virginia gardeners, even going as far as to cover the different growing areas within the state. Virginia Gardener is a sound publication with good photography and a solid range of articles. Past topics include designing entryways, getting kids interested in gardening, night blooming flowers, making compost, controlling weedy vines, winter planters, winter spinach, and a Virginia garden designed to attract birds, bees and butterflies. It is a very real, practical publication, but lacks a bit of the “wow” factor for me.

Birds and Blooms The main reason to subscribe to Birds and Blooms (and it is a strong one) is the amazing photos of birds and butterflies. Many of the photos are submitted by hobby photographers and include a short story of the origin of the photo.

Actual gardening information is slight but the stories of all different kinds of birds and insects, mostly butterflies, are very entertaining. Recently I have been making nature photo collages and Birds and Blooms has been a

treasure trove of material.

Horticulture Horticulture is a jam-packed, really informative gardening magazine with very little advertising, making it best enjoyed—and digested—over some time rather than all at once. Article topics are wide-ranging and instructive, and the photography is lovely.

I gave up my subscription to Horticulture simply because I was getting behind on reading.

There are more: Garden Gate, Organic Gardening, Garden Design, Mother Earth News, Herb Companion, Country Gardens and The American Gardener from the American Horticultural society.

Sometimes a publisher, like Better Homes and Gardens, will run a special focus issue; the one dedicated to roses is my favorite. I always get that one.

While winter appears brief this year you can get knee deep in some fabulous magazines until you are knee deep in your garden.

Beauty and the Beast lights up the stage at Eastern View ➤ Classic musical set for Thursday, Friday, Saturday

According to director Jeff Walker it is purely coincidental that Disney’s Beauty and the Beast opened a week before Eastern View will present their musical version this weekend.

Dress rehearsals were ongoing this week in preparation for their four performances starting Thursday and continuing through Saturday. Friday morning some 800 of the county’s elementary students will be treated to this tale of the young girl who takes her father’s place in a magical castle where love ultimately weaves its spell. In the meantime, the castle’s inhabitants have now been turned into teapots and cups, clocks and candlesticks.

Costuming is fun and colorful.

Senior Amelia Elias plays the part of Belle, the young Beauty who finds herself in the enchanted castle dealing with the likes of the Beast, played by Justin Flemming.

As an aside, before Disney’s 1991 version of Beauty and the Beast and the blockbuster hit now playing there is another version that is worth the watch. In 1946, Jean Couteau produced ‘La Belle et la Bete’ in France. It is a hauntingly beautiful black and white version in French with subtitles. With none of today’s technology, the effects are magical.

Map making, part one: In February 1816 the Virginia Legislature authorized the creation of a state map. When completed the map would be housed at the newly created Board of Public Works and be a reference for the planning of public highways, turnpikes, canals, and later, railroads.

John Wood, a mathematician and surveyor, was selected by August of that year to do the surveys of Virginia’s counties. Around 40-yearsold, he was a native of Scotland and had been a master at the University of Edinburgh. He had arrived in the United States around 1800.

Wood was, reportedly, recommended for the job by Thomas Jefferson.

Wood noted in a letter from Lynchburg to John Tyler that he was borrowing surveying instruments from the former president.

Wood wished to begin his job in the fall of 1816, as he informed Tyler of “interruptions which would be caused by the foliage of the trees upon the banks of the rivers to proper observations, it would be inconvenient for me to commence previous to the first of October”.

He planned to hire four young apprentice surveyors to accompany him. He estimated expenses of $10 per day for “a good Boat, provisions, and four hands”, and requested $2 per mile for his salary.

before he actually signed his contract with the state. It may be that the state was raising and appropriating funds for the project during that time. Wood signed his contract with Governor James P. Preston on April 1, 1819.

The contract described the areas Wood was to survey and the massive job ahead of him and his assistants: A survey of the Ohio River from the mouth of the Great Kanawha to the Pennsylvania line, and thence with that line to the top of the Alleghany Mountain; also the Little Kanawha, from its mouth to Salt Lick Creek; al the Monongalia River, from the Pennsylvania line to Buchanan’s river; also the west fork; he will also lay down the outward boundary of each county, either by actual surveys thereof, or by reference to recent and authentic surveys of the same, upon a scale of 200 poles to the inch; the true positions of the corners of such counties as lie adjacent thereto, and all public roads, rivers, creeks and mountains which intersect such outward boundaries; where such intersection is by river, creek or run, the breadth thereof at the place of intersection; and when by mountain, the foot or feet of the mountain and the summit thereof. All mountains, rivers, or creeks that have not been surveyed or contracted for heretofore in the general survey, he will lay down and delineate with their general bearings with as much accuracy as practicable, together with the exact position of all the public roads, cities, towns, Court Houses and villages in each county. He will, moreover, lay down by actual survey, the following great leading or post roads, noting the most remarkable places thereon, to-wit: from Washington to North Carolina, via Richmond; from Washington to

Charlottesville, via Fredericksburg; from Washington to the Tennessee line, via Winchester, Staunton, Fincastle, and Abingdon; from Norfolk to Richmond, via Williamsburg; from Norfolk to Petersburg; from Richmond to the mouth of Big Sandy, via Charlottesville, Staunton, Warm Springs, and Lewisburg; from Richmond to Fincastle, via Lynchburg; from Richmond to the Northern Neck, via Tappahannock, and from Winchester to the Ohio River, via Clarksburg. He will moreover take accurately, by Astronomical observations, the latitude and longitude of the following places, to-wit: the Capitol in Richmond, Capes Henry and Charles, the Natural Bridge, Harper’s Ferry, Point Pleasant, White Sulphur Springs, New River, where it intersects the North Carolina line, ascending, and Cumberland Gap. Finally, the said John Wood covenants and agrees to make a connected map of the whole State, from the surveys of the respective counties, to furnish two copies of the charts of each county to the Executive, to be disposed of by them according to Law, and to complete the whole work in the space of five years from the date hereof.

And whereas by the different laws relating to the survey of the State, a sum not exceeding fifty thousand dollars is authorized to be expended in completing the same, exclusive of the expense of engraving and publishing the general map of the Commonwealth, and various sums have been paid, and contracted to be paid, to other individuals for services rendered in executing a part of the said work, and the said John Wood is willing to accept the residue of the said fifty thousand Dollars as full compensation for the services herein stipulated to be performed by him.

The Internet was still in its fledgling stages. Michael Jordan had just returned to the NBA. And Eric Galloway wasn’t even born yet.

The year was 1995, and it was the last time a Culpeper County High School had a state wrestling champion. Once a state powerhouse in AA, the Blue Devils 13 individual champions from 1971 to 1995. Then, a drought.

That drought came to an end after 22 years this season, when Galloway pinned Abingdon’s William Seymore in the state finals.

It was the culmination of a wrestling career that began at age 7, and it fulfilled a goal Galloway had of bringing a state title back to Culpeper.

“I didn’t pay much attention to it until it got closer to the end of the season,” Galloway said. “I just used it as the final motivation to bring a state title back to Culpeper.”

Performing under the intense spotlight in the state tournament was a motivator for Galloway, who finished third in the state in 2016.

“It’s exhilarating, it’s a pure adrenaline rush,” Galloway said.

“It’s really easy to get amped up and ready to go.”

Galloway knew he had to capitalize and score fast against Seymore, and in what he called “ball of craziness” found himself on top of Seymore with his opponent’s shoulders on the mat at the 3:59 mark.

He jumped up and celebrated with a yell as his father David, a coach at CCHS, cheered on.

For Galloway, it was the perfect cap to his wrestling career which began in the Culpeper Wrestling Federation.

“I tried a lot of sports as a kid and I just fell in love with wrestling,”

Galloway said.

He honed his craft in the Culpeper league and also wrestled with the Birds of Prey in Fauquier County.

But now with his state title in tow, he’s hanging up his singlet.

He will attend Radford University in the fall after graduating from CCHS and plans to study physical therapy with the ultimate goal of earning his doctorate.

“That was the thing for me, to finish on a high note,” Galloway said.

“It’s getting pretty tiring. I’d like to pursue what is important in life now.

It took a lot of work, but it all paid off in the end.”

Choose your cheese because your heart desires it Some six or seven years ago there was debate about the most expensive cheese in the world. As I recall, there were two contenders that were up for the proverbial title. First up was Great Britain’s entry, “Stilton Gold.” This cheese was a cows milk white Stilton cheese whose curds were turned with (insert drum roll here) edible gold leaf and gold-flecked cinnamon schnapps. None (that I know of, anyway) came to the United States. Stilton can be excellent, blue or otherwise, but in this case it was the gold that added the higher value to the cheese.

The second cheese, well that’s a bit more unusual.

It’s called Pule, from Serbia. Low yield milkings are done three times a day to create this cheese. Cheese made from…okay, do really want to know? Consider that if you log into Facebook right now you can find, enter a contest, and possibly win an Aston Martin customized by Daniel Craig (James Bond), and see lots of puppies - cute fluffy white ones! Then for only $10 you can see how you can stand to change the world.

That, or you could still be reading this and learn that Pule is made from the milk of Balkan donkeys.

Yes, donkeys. It surprised me, too. Equally surprising was the cost. Ready? No, you can’t be.

More than $600 per pound. So how are you feeling now? Can you pick a winner between Balkan Donkey milk cheese and golden-flecked Stilton cheese? Don’t ask me, as I have not tasted either cheese. Nor, for the record, did I contribute the $10 to Daniel Craig’s relevant social cause that could have won me an Aston Martin Convertible.

Some things, that no matter how close they may seem or how amazing they may be, are always just out of reach. Cheese should not be one of them. Real cheese, one not made with cellulose (wood pulp) or described as “imitation cheese process food,” can be more costly. In fact, we are seeing cheeses that are $30 or even $50 pound. That price scale was once unheard of in cheese. Thankfully, equally amazing tastes and quality are matched to the somewhat higher prices.

Donkey and Gold) may still have your attention. They may sound steep at first, but consider that a pound of cheese is much more than most people realize or will ever eat at a sitting. While you ponder that, know that it’s not just my passion for cheese talking. Specialized coffee is the equivalent of more than $60/gallon. How much do you drink in a day? Betting it’s not a gallon.

Despite the high price, it has not stopped, slowed or deterred most people from specialized coffee. I mean have you ever been at a Starbucks without a line? Also consider specialty chocolate at more than $50/pound.

Other than my son, who can say “no” to chocolate?

At the cheese venues that I frequent, I regularly hear, “For that price I should be getting the cow, too!” as people explore options and discuss pricing. Ouch. Do the smaller farms, creameries and caves that produce and craft cheese no longer matter? Does the quality and uniqueness of the cheese that we buy not matter more than price? Has our collective desire for price made cheese a commodity?

Gimmickery and rare exceptions aside, real cheese is a natural product that reflects the place(s) that it came from or the personality of those making it. As I see it, you should choose a cheese that your heart desires and leave the budget concerns for later. You likely don’t need a pound of it, the cow it came from or even gold flecked cheese to be happy.

ONE YEAR AND COUNTING. Main Street welcomed a new addition to Culpeper’s foodie scene when Grill 309 opened its doors in March of last year. Recently they celebrated their one-year anniversary and customers flocked to the locally owned bar and grill which features fun American fare with a twist. For example, The Doughnut combines the rich full flavors of a burger but rather than a bun - you guessed it - let’s sandwich that baby in a big doughnut. Their onion rings, sweet potato fries and feta fries are legion. You can also opt for a turkey guacamole wrap or a Greek salad if a juicy burger - perhaps between a grilled cheese sandwich - doesn’t tempt you. Add to that a rotating tap wall of 12 beers and a selection of wine and you’ve got a winner. Passed peacefully on Thursday March 16, 2017 at Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton, VA. She entered this world December 1, 1932 in Washington, DC, born to the late Clifton and Eleanor Thompson.

She is survived by her brother Lester Thompson and wife Ann, Cecil Berry, brother-in-law, her children David Pompell, wife Tammy, Wayne Pompell, Rena Mitchum and husband Noah, Clifton Wilkins, Lester Wilkins, April Cross and husband Mike along with 7 grandchildren Jason Poletis, Mark Pompell, Christin Wilkins, Michael Wilkins, Victoria Martin, Jacob Cross and Joshua Cross. She also had 6 great grandchildren. Her spouses Leroy Pompell, Chesley G Wilkins, Jack Coffman; her sister Helen Berry; 2 brothers Merrill Thompson and Clifton Thompson and two sons Chesley Wilkins and Donald Wilkins all preceded her in death.

Her remains will be buried in the Quantico Cemetery with late husband Jack. No services will take place at this time.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating her life will be held at her home the beginning of May. Any donations should be sent to the Virginia Breast Cancer Society in her name.

Ruby T. Walker Brooker Ms. Ruby T. Walker Brooker, daughter of the late Fannie Mae and Reuben Walker, peacefully transitioned to her eternal home in glory on Sunday, March 19, 2017.

Her celebration of life memorial service will be held at Cedar Hill Funeral Home, Suitland, MD on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 12:00 noon.
