Search narrows to three finalists This week the State Board for Community Colleges has certified three finalists for the position of president at Germanna Community College. The finalists were among more than 100 applicants from across the nation.

The three finalists include Dr. John R. Donnelly of Charlottesville, VA; Dr. Janet Gullickson, of Spokane, WA; and Dr. Linda Thomas-Glover, of Onley, VA. “This opportunity at Germanna is attracting an impressive breadth and depth of talent,” said Glenn DuBois, chancellor of Virginia’s Community Colleges. “We take that as a vote of confidence in the college, as well as the entire Virginia Community College System. Our focus on student success, our innovative approaches to providing short-term workforce training and our stability make us attractive to community college leaders who yearn to make a difference.”

Dr. John R. Donnelly is currently vice president for instruction and student services at Piedmont Virginia Community College, a position he has held since 2010. Prior Donnelly to that, he served for two years as vice president of academic and student affairs/provost for Massachusetts Bay Community College in Wellesley Hills, MA. Donnelly began his community college career as an adjunct instructor of history at Germanna Community College in 1999 and rose through the ranks serving as a full-time faculty member and eventually an assistant dean and dean at the college. He holds a doctorate in higher education from the University of Virginia, master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a bachelor’s degree from James Madison University.

When I came back from my most recent trip, I thought there was a new pizza place in the old Long John Silver's building which sits right on 29 just down from Ruby Tuesdays. Turns out it is a familiar restaurant. Ciros has been in business for 30 years, only in a new spot. It was formerly near Rue 21. Now it is bright and shiny and new...new, location (barely), new building, new owners etc. The business passed from father to son and cousin. These young guys are the co-owners. They are Antonio Borgia and Onofrio Castiglia. They feature pizza, subs and pasta and you can eat in or carry out. Prior to that, she served two years as chief academic officer for the second largest district of the Community Colleges of Spokane. Gullickson served as president of Front Range Community College in Westminster, CO, between 2004 and 2005. She was also interim president and provost of what is now known as Minnesota’s Northeast Higher Education District.

Gullickson holds a doctorate in education from the University of Minnesota, a master’s degree from South Dakota State University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Dakota.

Dr. Linda ThomasGlover is the current president of Eastern Shore Community College, a position she has held since 2009. Prior to that, she served as provost/ Thomaschief academic officer Glover of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College in Kentucky beginning in 2004. Thomas-Glover also worked for more than a decade at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, NC, rising through several positions, ultimately serving a nine-month term as the college’s interim vice president of instruction. She holds a doctorate in chemistry from Temple University, a master’s degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and a bachelor’s degree from South Carolina State College.

The three finalists are vying to succeed Dr. David Sam, who has served as Germanna’s president for nearly a decade. Sam announced last summer that he would retire at the end of the current academic year.

The finalists will each spend a day or more on the campuses of Germanna between Monday, March 20 and Thursday, March 30, 2017, to meet with faculty, staff, students and community members.

Germanna Community College, which opened in 1970, is a twoyear, public institution of higher education, serving a total headcount of about 13,000, including both students in academic courses and workforce development training, in the counties of Caroline, Culpeper, King George, Madison, Orange, Spotsylvania, Stafford and the city of Fredericksburg.

Robo Hamster looks to take first at FIRST

It may have been a premonition years ago when the Vesperman family became the proud owners of a Robo Dwarf Hamster.

Paige, as youngest daughter Angel named the animal, became a mascot and namesake of the Vespermans’ other hobbies - robotics.

The Vesperman clan first got into the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) when oldest son Jeremy was in high school. The first year competing, their team - the Robo Hamsters - qualified for the world championships.

Since then, it’s been a hand-me down hobby of sorts.

Jacob, 16, a junior at Culpeper County High School tagged along when Jeremy, now a junior at Kettering University majoring in computer programming, first started the club in 2013. Josh, 14, an eighth-grader at Culpeper Middle School followed suit and Angel, 11, joined the team last year.

For parents Colleen and Matthew Vesperman, the competition helps spread their love of robotics and helps ensure their children a

higher education. Jeremy earned a FIRST scholarship for $22,500 and that has helped pave his way into college.

While it can help with tuition, the biggest aspect for the Vespermens is the focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math).

“It gets you more involved in STEM activities,” Josh said. “It opens a lot of opportunities for college and other careers. Also, it’s a lot of fun.”

Robots not in disguise Josh watched his older brothers work on robots around the house and quickly picked up the love of the craft.

“I like to build things and experiment,” Josh said. “I like seeing what works and what doesn’t work.

I like trying to solve problems.”

One of those problems manifested itself a couple of years ago when he was participating in the FIRST Lego League. Josh wanted to build a miniature robot to do some chores around the house, but wasn’t very good at programming. ➤ See Robots, Page 5

“I got it to at least move around,” he said.

This year, he and his sister will serve as “gunners” for the Robo Hamster team while older brother Jacob handles the driving responsibilities.

The competition each year has a theme and this years is Steamworks. Creators must build a robot that is able to pick up balls, putting them in a goal to score points and then be able to move gears to attain more points. The two and a half minute challenge is split into three categories - autonomous, teleop and end game - with the robot operating only with its programming during the autonomous stage. The driver and gunners direct it during the teleop section and finally in the end game, the bot must climb a rope to earn points.

It’s a time consuming, but ultimately rewarding experience.

“We’re crossing our fingers. We’re very confident in our bot this year,” Colleen Vesperman said.

This year’s strategy for the Robo Hamsters is defense, which is what their bots are known for.

“Our first year, we got to worlds because we were kind of a big bully,” Matthew said. “In that we had one of the strongest drive bases on defense, and we were able to interrupt the flow of the other teams.”

Three teams form an alliance and must battle off against other alliances.

“We have a little bit more offensive things, so we will be able to pick up balls to score and we can place gears up,” Jacob said.

Last year, they attempted to use cameras to help maneuver, but having two feeds caused issues. This year, they are using a Raspberry Pie 3 to combine two camera feeds into one which will allow the driver coach to see almost a picture-in-picture screen of what is going on with the bot.

As a female, Angel hasn’t encountered those that scoff when she says she’s interested in science but has heard of that issue. Instead her friends are more amazed at what the family does.

But the Vespermens do, and this year’s creation is 40 inches long, 36 inches wide and 24 inches tall. At the moment it weighs around 80 pounds but is not quite finished. It can weigh no more than 120 pounds and the family has six hours before a competition to put the finishing touches on it. The first competition they will participate in is March 17 in Hampton Roads.

“The advantage we’ve had in the past was that we were very consistent,” Matthew said. “Last year the weight was an issue for us, because we were top heavy.”

The family credits local STEM enthusiasts with helping, especially TE Connectivity, which has provided funding since their second year in existence.

“They approached us our second year,” Matthew said. “The local plant was told to a find robotics team to sponsor. They fully funded us for the first two years.”

They have also received help from local businessman Tony Troilo, owner of Rosson & Troilo and a longtime STEM supporter through the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby. He rents a building to the Vespermans so they have space to create their bots.

“The last couple of years we built in houses or apartments we rented,” Colleen said.

Kilby Pediatrics also sponsors and the family has set up a gofundme page for others who want to contribute.

Jacob, who works at Chili’s, has also helped bankroll the hobby, at a time when most 16-year-olds would rather spend their money on themselves, he gives back to his family's’ team.

“It means a lot,” Jacob said. “I’m hoping it can help me going to college.”

“It’s hard...a lot of people don’t get it,” says Scott from her small office on a lot nestled near Rusty’s Towing and Ron’s Tires.

Between cutting hair and towing vehicles, she’s a busy lady.

“And we can cut trees,” she laughs looking to her husband Mike who owns Scott’s Landscaping and Tree.

“I’ve worked my whole life,” says Scott who started years ago with one tow truck, a hefty monthly payment and no customers.

But that soon changed as she went doorto-door to apartment complexes, businesses and local law enforcement. It took her two years to get on rotation. She was competing with several other established tow companies in the area.

Now, she’s proud to say that Hook-NUp covers over 35 properties for illegally parked and abandoned vehicles and is on rotation with the police department, sheriff’s office and state police.

When you think towing, your first thought may be your broken down vehicle or having cars removed from an accident scene.

That’s certainly a part of it but there is the other side and that’s where a tinder box can come with a tow.

“People are never happy when you are messing with their vehicle,” says Scott of cars removed from shopping centers and apartment complexes for illegally parking, expired tags, overstaying a 24 hour limit, or blocking a dumpster.

“There are all kinds of situations when you are called in for a tow,” said Scott. “It’s not personal for us...it’s our business...it’s what we do and I try to always do my best and respect their situation.”

But that isn’t always easy.

“Sometimes you get cussed daily,” said Scott, “you deal with a lot.”

And then there are the repos.

“People will try to hide their vehicle, chain it to a tree or try to give us money,” said Scott. “We have none of the details of their particular situation..we do the best we can...let people take their baby seats out... things like that.”

Once a vehicle is impounded, the only person who can retrieve items from it is the owner providing they can prove that with a driver’s license and registration. That may

seem reasonable but there are cases where a relative or friend was driving the vehicle or there is a divorce involved and one party wants access without the permission of the other.

“You can have someone just out of jail for a DUI or drugs and they want their vehicle...it can be the middle of the night,” said Scott.

The phone rings and Scott answers.

She’s pretty much a one woman show with the exception of help from her husband and two other part-time helpers.

It’s a tough business and not without requirements, licensing and knowing the law.

Scott laughs.

“Quite frankly, being a woman can help in some circumstances but come up against another woman and there will be words flying.”

At 82, her mother Gladys, worries about her daughter’s safety.

As does her husband Mike.

“As long as she’s treated fairly...it’s good with me,” says Mike, “but I don’t want any harm to come to her...you gotta watch your back.”

Scott chuckles again.

She recalled one situation where they were called to a tow and the owner of the vehicle, a young woman, tried to run her husband down. “She tried to hit him in the knees...there was no need for that,” said Scott.

Seed potatoes are now available in many farm and garden stores.

Basic varieties are familiar to most folks. Russet, a smooth ovalshaped potato, is great for baking and Frenchfrying. Kennebec, large, bumpy, and diseaseresistant, is a later-maturing variety. It is good for boiling and mashing. Pontiac, a wonderful early potato, has red skin and is very tender. Yukon gold has yellow flesh and looks like it has already been buttered. More recently, blue and red flesh potatoes have become available.

As I was selecting potatoes to plant in my garden, I started to wonder about the origins of this crop. Have you ever noticed there are always a variety of potato dishes

Why do I need to plant Certified Seed Potatoes? After all, potatoes are readily available in any grocery store. In order for a seed potato to become certified, it is inspected at least twice in the field during the growing season. Once the potatoes pass these field inspections for signs of disease, they are harvested and put into storage. Samples are taken from the various lots of the harvested crop, then shipped to a warmer climate where they are grown December through January.

These test batches must be verified through onsite inspection not to exceed acceptable tolerances for various diseases such as blights, mosaic viruses, wilts, and others.

Once they pass these inspections, the lots can be certified and the bags are given a Blue Certification tag. This is your assurance that you are buying a healthy spud for your field or garden.

Potatoes are vegetables but they contain a lot of starch (carbohydrates) that make them more like rice, pasta and bread in terms of nutrition.

Much like rice, wheat and maize (corn), potato crops are an important part the world’s diet.

Potato plants are usually pollinated by insects such as bumblebees.

How to grow them If you haven't harvested new potatoes in the spring, you may not know what a treat you are missing!

To get started, about 1 pound of seed potatoes will provide roughly enough eyes to plant about 10 feet of garden row. You should plant 1.5 to 2-oz pieces of potato. Each piece should have at least one good eye. The spuds should be spaced 10 to 12 inches apart along the row, and allow 24 to 36 inches between rows. Fertilizer requirements are 2.5 lbs of 5-10-10 per 50-ft row. Plan on side-dressing 1 or 2 times through the season with 1-lb 10-10-10 per 50-ft row. Virginia Cooperative Extension Publication 426-413 offers complete detailed information about planting your potatoes.

Traditionally, folks plant potatoes around Saint Patrick’s Day in our area. Actually, you can plant anytime from mid-March through April in this region. If you want to plant by

the phases of the moon, you should plant a root crop like potatoes when the moon is waning. This idea caused me to head to the Internet for more insight. The lunar planting theory goes something like this: The gravitational pull of the moon that causes higher tides during a full moon would also affect where the moisture is located in your garden.

A waxing moon pulls water nearer the surface. A waning moon allows water to concentrate lower in the soil.

Did you know there is an easy way to determine if the moon is waxing or waning? As you observe a crescent moon in the sky, draw an imaginary line across the open end. If this forms the lower case “d” then the moon is waning or dying. If that line across the open end of the crescent forms a lower case “b” then the moon is waxing or birthing!

Healthy Living Novant Health offers Grants available activity kit for The Culpeper Wellness Foundation will award $75,000 hospital stays in grants for health and wellness IN BRIEF

Novant Health is offering patients the option to choose a Meaningful Activity Kit as one way to help alleviate anxiety and reduce boredom during their hospital stay.

Patients receiving care at Novant Health hospitals will be able to choose between kits containing items such as playing cards, puzzle books, an eye pillow and earplugs or a blank journal/sketch pad.

"The kits offer patients a meaningful way to keep their minds busy during their stay," said Sharon Nelson, the program manager for integrative arts for Novant Health. "These activities can also be an ice-breaker. It gives the visitor or the clinician a way to interact with the patient as a person – something that allows them to feel normal, and not focused solely on their illness. That can be especially important for young family members." Novant Health is providing one kit a week to each patient free of charge.

Delivery dilemma The good news is that newspapers are alive and well and circulating in Culpeper. Be it a daily or weekly, like the Culpeper Times, we’re happy that folks still enjoy reading about their local world and advertisers are willing to support that effort.

Ours is a free paper designed to reach the most people in the most effective way.

To that end, we made the decision several months ago to make our paper available in racks in more than 300 locations throughout the area including Orange, Madison, Remington and Warrenton. You’ll also find it in those steel blue boxes.

Remember, it’s free so just pull the handle. No need for coins.

Culpeper Times & Treasures of Culpeper – My nomination for Best of the Best!

I feel compelled to congratulate The Culpeper Times for the February 23rd issue as it was, in my mind, clearly the “Best of the Best.” Like many area residents, I have at times been vocally critical of the local news coverage for using “canned” articles completely devoid of local content or real interest to readers.

So, am I not obligated to make public my feelings that this particular issue of the Times with the Treasures of Culpeper insert was clearly the “Best Ever.” The insert was Coffee Table Quality in respect to content, color and local interest. The insert

There is an exception. If you have a subscription, which you can certainly entertain, it will come via the postal system.

We come out each Thursday and routinely discover that by the weekend many of our locations are out of papers and we are refilling. That’s good news for us. We want to be as available as possible.

We also want to be environmentally friendly.

We learned this week that the town’s public safety committee discussed the issue of littering. Of particular focus is their desire to not add to the world’s accumulation of paper and plastic.

In addition to our delivery model we have a business-to-business carrier deliver a personal copy of the Culpeper Times to Culpeper's downtown businesses. It’s done for their convenience and did involve dropping

capitalized on Culpeper Treasures many of which can be observed by visiting the Museum of Culpeper History.

Interesting articles are accompanied by local merchant ads and expand to introduces a new vibrancy by bringing local business people and their stories to the attention of the readers. “Best Ever” overall award for the Treasurers of Culpeper!

Articles of particular interest included the features on the Village of Winston and the Winston family, on the Grass Rootes Cuisine, Destination Downtown which features local shopping and culinary treats that bring local as well as destination visitors to Culpeper.

If you did not receive the Treasures of Culpeper insert, come by and read mine. It’s right there on the coffee

off papers in front of their business housed in a plastic wrapper.

But, we wanted to be able to offer a solution. We listened and adjusted this week.

Our professional carrier who delivers to the downtown businesses will now begin delivery after 10 a.m. to make sure the stores are open and personally take the paper inside for better customer service.

Whether you are cradling your first newborn, sending another off to kindergarten, getting a sports physical for your middle schooler or concerned about your teen’s depression, as parents, the privilege of taking care of our children is a constant and cherished gift. At UVA Pediatrics Culpeper, their specialty is the well being of those lives from infancy to young adulthood (0-21).

In their new location since November, medical director Dr. Susan Werner is delighted to welcome old and new patients to a spacious environment that is staff and childfriendly. With tropical colors of aqua, salmon, and lime green, the interior is designed to be fresh, lively and very welcoming. A wind-

ing ribbon pattern in the floor encourages children to follow a path to one of 18 exam rooms. Each room has plenty of space for siblings, parents, books to read, and specially designed wall art that encourages children to find images. It’s all about the patient/doctor experience - making it friendly, warm and comfortable. Ceilings are higher, rooms are sound proofed for privacy, a lab is on site, there is a separate lactation room complete with a rocking chair and changing table and the list goes on. In the planning stage for some five years, the partnership with UVA has brought it all to fruition.

Doctors, nurses and staff walk the hallways with smiles on their faces soaking in the ambiance of their new surroundings. It’s made a huge difference and it’s clear that the most marked difference is for those babies, young children and their caregivers who likewise can bask in the new environs.

Dr. Werner feels very blessed.

A lifelong learner, Dr. Werner stays on top of the latest studies and research about children’s development. As an example, she and others in her profession are concerned about the amount of screen time that a child under two is exposed to...what that does to their growing brain’s ability to process information...is it all too much to take in...like ping pong balls ricocheting off the walls.

“Lots of times the parents and the child are coming in glued to their cell phones,” says Dr. Werner.

“I give them a while and then encourage putting them away for at least the time that I’m seeing them.

Perhaps I can give them a few breaths away to look at a book, find an image in our wallart or have a conversation.”

“Brain development is so important and complicated,” says Dr. Werner. “We’re learning more and more all the time.”

It’s not that screens aren’t in the exam room. They are and used for perhaps teleconferencing with another professional.

Dr. Werner can’t stress enough how important it is that when that baby comes into the world how critical it is to have constant loving care, eye contact and skin to skin contact.

Mealtimes together are another penchant for Dr. Werner.

“Some people think that getting your food and then heading to different parts of the house is sharing a meal,” said Dr. Werner.

Sitting together and sharing your day’s experience..even a few times a week..bodes for better communication among family members and strengthens the relationships and builds confidence when faced with difficult times.

Dr. Werner and her staff of physicians share similar goals of not only addressing the physical health needs of their patients but overall development to take in disposition, attitude, mental development and basically viewing the world from a

by Dr. Werner. One of 12 children, she shared that decades ago women had many children knowing that some could be lost to disease.

UVA Pediatrics Culpeper serves as the area’s specialists if a child is born at the hospital and needs immediate attention. There’s no shortage of new babies being born.

Nearly 30 came through their doors in February.

Most insurance carriers are accepted and Dr. Werner credits UVA

with offering free or reduced care plans for those who qualify.

Dr. Werner laughs. “I know I’m a talker,” she chuckles. But having conversations with her patients never gets old. “While we may try to keep office visits to under 20 minutes...it isn’t always possible... particularly when you are talking to new parents about wellcare... sometimes you just have to spend the time it takes.”

“It’s one patient at a time,” says Dr. Werner. “That’s why we are here.”

LET’S EAT!

Torrontes is a tempting Argentinian white to lure you into spring

Without a doubt, spring is in the air and according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration it’s looking like we have just experienced the third warmest winter on record. Cherry trees in D.C. are way ahead of schedule, as in peak bloom by mid-March is the current forecast. In and around Culpeper it’s looking quite springy too and white wine sales are more brisk than usual for this time of year. Suddenly we are making recommendations for lighter styles to enjoy with friends on picnics and outdoor entertaining.

There are a number of spectacular choices and one that’s a particular standout, but not so well known is torrontes. Very few customers specifically request torrontes, but it’s a super white wine grape to straddle that winter to spring transition. It’s not as heavy as chardonnay or as light as pinot grigio for example, and definitely worth getting to know.

Torrontes is the most widely planted white grape of Argentina, but is often overshadowed by the ever popular red, Malbec. Not only is it the most

widely planted, torrontes is unique to Argentina only and cultivated in the provinces of Mendoza, Salta, La Rioja, San Juan, Rio Negro and Catamarca. In fact, there are three exclusive varieties of torrontes with the most famous and extensively planted being torrontes Riojana. It’s a cross of muscat of Alexandria with listan prieto – a red grape.

It has a distinct personality with abundant aromatics, including a gorgeous floral/citrus nose, so much that you might wonder if you should drink it or wear it, but the beauty doesn’t just stop at the nose.

The flavors are fresh and lively with tropical fruit, orange citrus and a touch of green herbs. While its muscat roots and the flavor profile may imply sweet, torrontes is typically bone dry, refreshing and crisp.

Typically, the wine is aged in stainless steel, with just a handful seeing minimal exposure to oak for added depth and texture. One of my favorite regions for torrontes is Salta in northernmost Argentina and in particular, torrontes planted at higher elevations, 5,600 feet or more in this region. The vines benefit from hot sunny days for ultimate ripening and cool nights for retaining fresh acidity, making for the ultimate spring sipper in my opinion.
