The Culpeper Town Police Department announced Friday that Lieutenant Jeff Dodson will be the Culpeper Police Department's Public Information Officer (PIO).

“We continue to strive and evaluate the best ways to serve our community, to include our media outlets. Lieutenant Dodson heads up our Community Policing Division, which Dodson oversees our new Facebook site and other social media sites. Thus, he and his personnel, will be in charge of distributing lots of information to our citizens,” said Captain Chris Settle.

Police use social media to engage with community The Culpeper Police Department continues efforts to improve the police service that is provided to community members and also advance further into 21st century policing initiatives.

Recently the department began using Facebook and has plans of creating a Twitter account in the next couple weeks. The department is urging both residents and tourists to engage with the department on their social media pages.

The department's presence on social media provides so many benefits to not only the agency, but also the citizens. Utilizing social media allows the department to positively engage with citizens, solve crimes, issue incident or traffic alerts to citizens, and also keep everyone informed about department happenings. The social media presence will allow the department to increase public trust and transparency with its community members.

"We are hoping to reach a bigger audience and also disseminate information much quicker using this technology" says Chief Chris Jenkins.

The Culpeper Police Department is encouraging all residents and even those visiting the Culpeper area to view their Facebook page for the latest updates. FAMILY OWNED FOR 40 YEARS In the nine years I have lived in the Peper, I must have passed the Culpeper Wood Preservers lot and their stacks of lumber at least once every other day. I finally decided that I would put on a hard hat if that is what it took and go in there. I went to the office and found that I needed a safety jacket but no hard hat while the Operations Manager Matt Finch drove me around in his cart.

This is Matt and he filled me with facts and information as we drove around. This, along with four other facilities just like it and located in areas from the Mississippi River to New England, are owned by one of Culpepper's most prominent citizens Joe Daniel (Daniel Technology Center is also named after him). This group of lumber processing yards are the largest of their kind in that entire geographic area I just referenced. How large is our plant? Last year 145,000,000 (that is million, folks!) board feet of lumber were processed through Culpeper. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over The Culpeper Police Department‘s goal is to end drunk driving. Virginia’s law enforcement will be out in full force during the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization, and the local Checkpoint Strikeforce mobilization, which runs from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5, 2016.

Impaired driving prevention is the focus of the mobilizations, which are held in advance of and include the Labor Day holiday, one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

In combination with increased enforcement, law enforcement agencies, DMV’s Virginia Highway Safety Office and the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, along with other traffic safety advocates across the Commonwealth, are teaming up to provide education and outreach efforts about the dangers of impaired driving to Virginians.

Sixteen people died in traffic crashes on the Commonwealth’s roadways during the four-day Labor Day holiday last year. And in Virginia in 2015, there were 241 alcohol-related fatalities and 4,917 alcohol-related injuries.

The 241 people killed in alcohol-related crashes in Virginia represent 32 percent of all traffic fatalities.

As of Aug. 11, 2016 in Virginia, 86 fatalities, 2,657 injuries and 4,093 crashes were alcohol-related.

“These facts gravely highlight the need for increased enforcement and awareness of impaired driving issues, especially surrounding the Labor Day holiday,” said Chief Chris Jenkins.

“Decreasing overall traffic deaths in Virginia starts with preventing drunk driving,” Chief Chris Jenkins said. “We want to encourage everyone who plans on drinking to make a plan before the party begins. Not doing something as simple as choosing a sober driver could result in severe injury and even death. So, this August, and every day, remember: there is never an excuse to drink and drive. Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

Chief Chris Jenkins offered advice for would-be drunk drivers and all motorists on the roadways: -Always drive sober.

-Use a designated driver, call a cab or a friend, or use public transportation. Never drive if you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

-Always buckle up. Seat belts are the most effective traffic safety device for preventing death during a crash, and belts are the best defense against impaired drivers.

Finding good help can be difficult at best, but Honey Brook Farms in Brandy Station needs their team not only to put in a regular (tough) work week but also to get up at 3:30 or 4 a.m. in the morning twice a week to sell their products at local farmers markets.

Every Wednesday from May to December, about three members of Honey Brook’s team get up that early to load a van with their products and drive about 90 minutes to the McCutcheon/Mount Vernon Farmers Market in Fairfax County. At the market (one of 11 run by the Fairfax County Park Authority), they spend an hour or so unloading coolers of meat and eggs and crates of vegetables, setting up their stand

and displaying their products in time for the market’s 8 a.m. opening. Then, the two or three team members manning the stand will spend the next four hours selling their products and, more importantly, talking with customers and potential customers about their products and farm. After that, they have to take everything down, load the van and make the 90-minute drive back home.

On Saturday, everybody starts getting up at around 3:30 a.m. so that they then can fan out to six different farmers markets. They sell beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey, eggs, honey, teas, baked goods and produce. A full list of their products is available on their web site, honeybrookfarms.com. ➤ See Farm, Page 5

Culpeper Times • August 25-31, 2016 ➤ Farm, from Page 4 When it came to finding a team of good workers, Honey Brook Farms owners Mark and Alice Wilkes had a simple solution — their Christian faith and family. The farm is operated by eight of their children (Adam, Daniel, Hannah, Joshua, Kenan, Mark Christopher, Matthew and Sarah, ages 15 to 31) and two daughters-in-law (Amanda and Lisa). Five grandchildren (Annalise, Nathanael, Josiah, Peter and Titus) round out the household. Another daughter, Jennifer, now lives in Wisconsin with her husband, Derrick.

Everyone pitches in as needed, but they divide up the responsibilities. Adam is in charge of turkeys and the raw milk herd share dairy; Daniel, produce; Hannah, baking, flowers and baby animals; Joshua, fruit trees, honey bees and office work; Mark Christopher, pigs and guard dogs; Kenan, chickens and eggs; Matthew, beef cattle; and Sarah, baking and helping with the dairy.

Mark and Alice started their family more than 30 years ago.

“As our family grew, we looked for a way for all of us to work together, and farming was the answer,” Mark said. They bought the 90-acre farm in 2000 but — in order to remain debt-free — didn’t start farming operations until 2011. The land was overgrown but “with lots of family work days bush-hogging, fence clearing and weeding, we slowly took the property back,” he said.

Farming also fit with their strong Christian faith.

“Along with their spiritual needs, Christ met people’s physical needs,” Mark said.

NEWS Honey Brook accurately bills itself as, “A family farm for this generation and the ones to come.” That tag line has a doubleedged meaning. The Wilkes employ farming methods designed to produce healthy food and maintain the land for generations to come. Their vegetables are “beyond organic,” grown with no pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or other chemicals.

Their animals are not just free range, but pasture-raised, feeding on grass and grain that has been tested to ensure it contains no GMOs or chemicals. Their baked goods are gluten-free and whole grain (they grind their own wheat berries).

They rotate crops to preserve the soil, and also rotate animals in their pastures.

Cows, sheep and goats come first; they eat and trample down the tall weeds and their droppings provide fertilizer. The egg laying chickens come next; they scratch the cow pies for fly larvae, scattering the natural fertilizer. The chickens are moved from one spot to another in the pasture every day. A hen house built on a wagon makes it easy to move the layers. They use pairs of geese to guard their pasture-raised broilers. The geese can chase off foxes and alert the farm’s dogs if a coyote shows up.

Their approach takes a lot of labor, but the family sees as its mission the need to grow food as it’s meant to be grown and to maintain the land.

“It brings us a lot of joy to meet people’s needs for healthy food,” Mark said. “For us, it’s not just a way to make a living, it’s a calling.”

From retirement to refirement: O’Neil back on the job He did “more fishing than schoolwork” in his younger years, and the passion born of fighting fish on the line still charges up his world, but that passion is bounded now by an attention to detail that goes far beyond tying lures or stalking Rockfish on the Potomac.

Court Security Officer Chris O’Neil’s life seems to be a succession of jobs and interests with one common denominator: exacting attention to detail. In the world of courtroom security that is a necessary characteristic.

Tying a lure is half the fun for O’Neil, the other half is giving the lure to a friend knowing a “fifty pound Rockfish” will eventually take it. Just as the most fun he had in his career was the painstaking investigation that it takes to track down a fugitive. “I’d almost do it for free,” he said. “It’s hard to explain,” he said of finding fugitives. “It’s like finding the pieces of a puzzle and putting them all together.”

Now in charge of courtroom security at the Culpeper Courthouse, O’Neil began as a technician for Xerox Copiers after he graduated from the Fairfax County school system in 1985. In 1988 he was working on a copier at the Fairfax County Jail “when they kinda recruited me.” Life was never the same.

He began working in the Fairfax County Jail and from there his career moved upwards as he trained with U.S. Marshals, taught at the Fairfax Law Enforcement Academy and worked with the FBI Joint Fugitive Task Force among other things. Later in his career he was

the liaison for the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office during the the county’s jail expansion. “I’d like to take that experience and help with Culpeper’s jail,” he said.

O’Neil moved to Culpeper in 2003.

“I liked the rural character of the area,” he said. “It fit me.”

When he retired from the Fairfax Sheriff’s Department Jan. 11 of this year, after 27 years of service, “the last thing I thought I would do is start working again,” he said.

But Culpeper Sheriff Scott Jenkins had other ideas and he recruited O’Neil to come work with the Sheriff’s Office. Now the man who was on the advance team for the Lee/Malvo sniper trial is working courthouse security as a First Sergeant for Culpeper.

“I like the fact that we get the benefit of all the training and experience Chris has – at no cost to the county taxpayers,” Jenkins said.

“I’ve known him for years,” Jenkins said. “His is the sort of ethics and

Commemorating the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe expedition

A cool morning, cool costumes and an enthusiastic crowd gathered at the Germanna Foundation in Locust Grove Tuesday morning for the send off of a very special group of riders.

They were there to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe expedition led by Governor Alexander Spotswood in 1716.

That ride not only took the intrepid group to the top of the Blue Ridge Mountains but paved the way for English colonization beyond that terrain. Keep in mind that the French were also vying for territory at the time but Spotswood had creative plans and an eye toward westward expansion.

Who better to lead the group than Culpeper’s own Tom Seay perhaps most famously known for his Best of America by Horseback program.

Seay, along with his niece and cohost production coordinator Kristen Biscoe, are descendants of the original German settlers that occupied this area so for them a very

unique ride.

Seay was effusive.

“I’ve ridden in Mexico, Canada and many areas but this is home.

I love my Virginia. When I was five, I rode to school on a shetland pony.

When I got there, the pony would return to the barn on his own. In the distance I would see those Blue Ridge Mountains and it was my dream to ride there on my pony.

Now, I’m living that dream of a 5-year-old,” said Seay as he looked to the forest they would soon enter.

It was from this spot at the Germanna Foundation that the original group ventured out.

“We wanted to keep it small and manageable,” said Biscoe of the eight riders that comprised the group.

In addition to herself and Seay, Sandy and Wayne Gifford came from Michigan, Paul Fucsh from West Virginia who rode a very handsome mule, Robyn Yeager also from West Virginia, Jane Yarborough from Fredericksburg and Mary Maleski from Florida.

On Thursday, Aug. 25, in partnership with the Museum of Culpeper History, the riders will be at Andora Farm from 5-8 p.m. talking of their adventures. There will be food, activities for children and plenty of photo opportunities.

The ride culminates with a proclamation ceremony held Saturday, Aug. 27, at Big Meadows from 1-2 p.m.

fundraiser for the Orange County Parks & Recreation Foundation.

The Liberty Ride will begin this year at James Madison’s Montpelier, located at 11350 Constitution Highway, Montpelier Station, Virginia. The ride still begins at James Madison's Montpelier, but participants will enter at the main entrance this year. The ride begins promptly at 10 a.m., so it is highly recommended that participants arrive before 9 a.m., though participants are welcome to arrive as early as 8:15 a.m. Anyone arriving after 9:45 a.m. may not be able to participate.

The length of the ride is between 7 and 10 miles round-trip (route may change based on weather and trail conditions), and the terrain is pasture land, wooded trails, and

gravel roads, so please make sure horses are shod accordingly. We highly recommend that horses are shod, without shoes some horses have experienced fatigue on the gravel roads. This is a group trail ride, there will be a trail master who will lead the ride. This first portion of the ride is optional since it will expose horses to crowds of observers. The news media - TV, radio, and newspapers - have become BLAINE PARDOE corrupt and manipulative.

I recognize the irony of writing this in a newspaper please bear with me. For the most part I blame the media, but at the same time there are other factors in play.

We used to live in a country where there were facts. Walter Cronkite on the evening news would tell us what was happening in the world.

We accepted those facts and lived out our lives. There was no spin. Walter didn't tell us his interpretation of the news. He didn't try and twist what he said to fit his personal political agenda. He just told us the data and left the interpretation of the facts up to us.

Last year Brian Williams of NBC was called out for lying about being shot at in the Middle East and for things he reported during Hurricane Katrina. His punishment - several months off and a return to MSNBC. I’ve had worse punishment in grade school. It was a wake-up call for us, but we ignored it. Our "reporters" have become more like actors and media figures. They fulfill agendas and wander far from the facts, even going so far as to make stuff up.

I am not saying reporters shouldn't have political opinions - but when they clash with actual reporting - it is an issue.

NBC hired Chelsea Clinton, fresh out of college, for a salary of $600,000 - three times what other correspondents were paid (people

If this is not political favoritism then consider this - former Clinton Communications Director George Stephanopoulos, now ABC's Chief Anchor, donated $75,000 to the Clinton Foundation this year. How can he honestly report about their alleged corruption when he's a contributor? Both of these instances are clear indications that the media is slanted in their political views.

This year's Presidential campaign has highlighted this more than ever.

When Donald Trump encouraged support of the Second Amendment to do something about Hillary Clinton, the media twisted this into a story of him calling for her assassination.

CNN reported that the Secret Service had met with Trump about his "threat."

It was a bold-faced lie, refuted two days later by Reuters. CNN (The Clinton News Network) had completely fabricated the story.

Worse yet, they issued no retraction.

The reporter was not fired. Not a single news network that ran with the story retracted their reports. No one reported that the story had been contradicted. Why? It didn't fit their agenda to smear Mr. Trump. Think about this carefully - CNN made up a story to smear a candidate.

At the same time emails showing how Hillary Clinton manipulated the DNC against Bernie Sanders were released, yet the media gave this as minimal coverage as possible. We had the Attorney General meet with Bill Clinton 48 hours before his wife had to go and meet with the FBI and we were told they spoke about their grandchildren. The Clinton Foundations "pay for play" scheme has been glossed over in favor of nude photos of Mrs. Trump. Hillary

released her taxes and revealed that 96 percent of her “charitable” donations went to her own foundation – but the story the media ran with was that Trump had not yet released his taxes. Ideology trumps true reporting.

We have wandered far from our media reporting facts. Part of it is the internet's fault. For every "fact" that you find, there are a dozen websites refuting that fact. Where can you go for accuracy? Nowhere.

Your only hope is for you to do the research yourself. I don't trust the media when they interpret what Mr. Trump says. I go to the source and watch the video myself. I've read some of the emails at Wikileaks and I can tell you there are other nasty surprises in those emails that has never been reported on. If they misrepresent the truth so much, can we really trust their polls? I think not.

This may backfire on the media though. People are seeing them for what they are, charlatans and evil manipulators of the truth. If they continue to slant their reporting, it may cost Hillary the White House.

People will vote for Trump simply because they believe he’s getting a raw deal.

You may hate what Donald Trump says. You may cringe at his choice of words at times. But one thing he has done is shed light on how corrupt and overtly bias our mainstream media is. We all had doubts before but this campaign season has validated just how twisted "reporting" has become.

I don’t care what your age is; man or woman means nothing to me.

I have no conscience for what I am doing, I am insidious can’t you see?

I will leave them with a blank canvas where pictures were once stored.

I will rot their conscious mind of all the things they once adored.

I will tear apart their family; they won’t ever know what to do.

There is nothing that can mend their loved ones, there is no special glue.

I will leave them broken and battered, a shell of whom they once were.

And all that they remembered will now be one big blur.

Piedmont Downhill challenge builds teamwork, community relations

It’s not often a business can look forward to going downhill - that’s why the Second Annual Piedmont Downhill is perfect for local organizations.

The downhill, a Corporate Derby Challenge, will be hosted by the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby Saturday, Oct. 29 from noon to 4 p.m. as a fundraiser for the educational programs hosted by the organization.

Originated last year in Akron at the All-American Soap Box Derby, Culpeper was the second derby location to host a downhill corporate challenge in November 2015. This year, Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby executive director Frankie Gilmore said she is looking forward to an even bigger event as more businesses become involved.

“The main benefit is the team building aspect and the collaboration of your co-workers,” Gilmore said. “Whether it’s having a manager from each division come in and work on the car or pulling in your sales team and having them work together, all of a sudden it’s that team building aspect in an adult setting.”

But while it’s fun for the adults, it’s all about raising money to help educate youth. Started as a way to support the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math summer camp hosted by the derby, the

program has expanded to add arts (making it STEAM) and is being geared toward the scholastic gravity challenge.

“It’s integrating Soap Box Derby cars into schools and afterschool programs for hands-on, engaged learning,” Gilmore said.

The downhill challenge provides businesses, organization and civic groups an opportunity have up to 10 co-workers work together to build a custom Soap Box Derby car and race it at the famed Paul Bates Raceway.

“It’s about these businesses, organizations, civic groups turning into kids again,” Gilmore said. “Leadership development, it doesn’t get any better. You build the car and you get to race. They are literally promoting their own organization or business using their creativity.”

Last year Culpeper Wood Preservers crafted a Taylor Forklift, Brown Harris Wealth Management recreated the Little Rascals derby car and Tanom Motors drove a sleek machine to first place.

In Akron, a group even built Cousin Vinnie’s Winnebago from National Lampoon.

“With the creativity, the sky's the limit for each business,” Gilmore said.

While stressing fun, Gilmore added that there are plenty of resources, including videos and instructions, to help businesses build a car safely.

It costs $1,000 for registration, with all the proceeds going toward the gravity challenge. If a business would need to purchase a car kit, that costs $500. Last year, the Piedmont Downhill had 12 teams participate, raising $12,000 for the derby’s educational programs.

Gilmore pointed to the generous $25,000 donation from SWIFT to get the educational programs off the ground and noted that more businesses means more opportunities for youth in our area.

She’s hoping that the Gravity Challenge can add a Stock division this year, in addition to the existing Super Stock division.

Engine Performance Have engine driveability problems (hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good repair shop. Cold weather will make existing problems worse. Replace dirty filtersair, fuel, PCV, etc.

Fuel Put a bottle of fuel de-icer in your tank once a month to help keep moisture from freezing in the fuel line. Note, too, that a gas tank that’s kept filled helps prevent moisture from forming in the first place. ase.com

“These businesses are going to help us provide these cars to our local schools,” Gilmore said.

Last year was such a success, that every team said “do it again,” almost immediately.

“Every team last year had a ball, and they all said definitely count us in,” Gilmore said. “We foresee having an even better year this year.”

Gilmore also pointed out that this year’s race takes place close to Halloween, and hopes that teams will take advantage of that.

Novant names new financial officer Novant Health UVA Health System has named Charles “Chuck” Coder chief financial officer. Coder joins the Health System from Community Health Systems, where he most recently served as the market chief financial officer for the Virginia region.

“With the formation of Novant Health UVA Health System, we knew we would need a chief financial officer who would provide the right guidance for this unique partnership,” Coder said Melissa Robson, CEO of Novant Health UVA Health System. “I am pleased to welcome Chuck Coder to our team.”

Coder has an extensive healthcare background and has worked in finance for Community Health Systems, Health Management Associates and Baptist Health Care. Coder held several positions with Community Health Systems, including chief financial officer for Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia, and chief financial officer for South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley, Alabama. He also served as chief financial officer with Health Management Associates for Spring Hill Regional Hospital in Spring Hill, Florida. Coder has a Bachelor of Science in accounting and a Master of Business Administration from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida.

Bird hunters: Register for your HIP permit All hunters requiring a Virginia hunting license including lifetime license holders who plan to hunt doves, waterfowl, rails, woodcock, snipe, coots, gallinules or moorhens in Virginia must be registered with the Virginia Harvest Information Program (HIP).

A change for the 2016-2017 season is hunters will now be issued a HIP “permit” with their hunting license, when identifying that they will be hunting migratory game birds, instead of being issued a HIP number as in the past. A new HIP permit is needed for the 2016-2017 hunting season. Just select the HIP permit option when purchasing your hunting license and it will be added to your license and customer account. There is no cost for a HIP permit.

Local foodies pioneer the cheesy path to epicurean ecstasy JEFFERY MITCHELL

Maybe I missed the notice that allowed vehicles to make left turns at red lights.

Apparently “waiting” for a green light is out of style? Follow the laws of the commonwealth?

Fuggedaboutit.

As I have watched several occurrences of this phenomenon in Culpeper, I have finally been prompted to write about it. The last straw came when multiple cars and a rig decided to do just that and cut across two lanes of traffic to get to Wal-Mart. The rig driver waved – so that was nice.

Seriously, though, if that’s what is now acceptable to “Culpeperites,” I had to wonder what other laws no longer matter. Sadly, I did not have to look too far.

I will not make this a diatribe about a curmudgeon’s views of order, but instead ask an anarchistic question: If we don’t want to follow (or have the capacity or priority to enforce) the laws, why have them?

This is a timely parable for what’s happening in the world of cheese right now. Cheese is hot. The new “in” thing and so commonly implemented (in restaurants), that a noted Washington food critic opined that he would not be surprised to see a cheese and charcuterie offering at 7-11. Ouch. That’s a damning indictment on the lack of creativity going on with the potential of cheese.

Where are the maverick’s, the figurative people who started making left turns on red and saying (perhaps to themselves), “Hellz Yeah this is good”? Break a few eggs, rock the boat and let’s move this cheese party forward. I look around and I see a potential epicenter here in Central Virginia. Some of the people and restaurants are leading the pack of cheesy pioneering: Jess (and the team) at Before and After in Sperryville busted the rulebook with their Mimolette Crisps. The Graffiti House Heritage Day: The grand opening of the hospital room Contributed Report The largest cavalry battle of the 1861-1864 War Between the States took place in Culpeper County 153 years ago. It occurred in early summer at Brandy Station during June of 1863. General Robert E. Lee began moving his Army of Northern Virginia from Fredericksburg, Virginia on a campaign that would end at the Battle of Gettysburg. Therefore, he commanded General J. E. B. Stuart to screen his movements and Stuart encamped his cavalry division near Brandy Station. It did not go unnoticed by the Federal Army. Very early on the morning of June 9, Major General Alfred Pleasanton commanded his 11,000

men in the Army of the Potomac to attack the Confederate Army which numbered 9,500 soldiers.

The day long battle was a melee of smoke, dust, flashing sabers, the rattle of carbines and pistols, cannon roar, and soldiers of the blue and gray intermingled regiments ferociously charging and slashing in chaotic fashion.

The ambulances were assembled and the wounded were taken to homes to be treated. One of the houses was the Stone house located near Fleetwood Hill; previously the home of Postmaster John Stone where originally the injured Confederates were taken to be treated.

Later, while recovering in 1863 and 1864, soldiers of both sides

used the embers from the fireplace to write their names, thoughts, messages and artwork on the walls.

The Stone house is now known as the Graffiti House and the graffiti is being remembered, protected and preserved by the Brandy Station Foundation. The walls speak today about those days 153 years ago.

To that end, the Brandy Station Foundation will have a grand opening of the newly created 1860s hospital room during the Graffiti House Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Graffiti House is located at 19484 Brandy Road. in Brandy Station, Virginia.

Children 12 and under will be

admitted free and $5 per person donation is suggested.

Events will include the grand opening of the hospital room, a field war hospital, a speaker’s program, a memorial service for the gallant John Pelham led by the Culpeper UDC, Confederate and Federal bivouac areas, sutlers, a photo booth, a lecture on Civil War medicine, the Country Troubadours, Graffiti House tours, and a children's corner with vintage clothes and toys.

An “Army Enlistment” program for children will be presented with a reward upon completion. Food will be available for purchase.
