LOCAL NEWS Pamper Me Pink uplifts cancer survivors, community

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Pamper Me Pink saved Emma Pomerleau’s life.

Wiping away tears, the thyroid and breast cancer survivor thanked Pepperberries’ Sharon Welch Clark for starting the Pamper Me Pink fund 16 years ago - and told her tale of survival during a panel discussion at the annual event.

This year’s Pamper Me Pink, hosted by Pepperberries and Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center for the 14th year, once again pampered women of Culpeper, introduced them to area providers and connected them with cancer survivors who told their success stories of being treated in Culpeper.

Pomerleau, who has lived in Culpeper for five years, was diagnosed several years ago with thyroid cancer.

Last year, she started to see symptoms again and thought it was back - in-

stead it was breast cancer. Her grandmother had breast cancer and after genetic testing it was discovered that her family carries a gene that makes them susceptible to several strands of the disease.

As she and fellow survivors Jon Carter, Scott Kurtzman and Annie White told their stories, Pomerleau leaned over to Clark and tearfully thanked her.

“If it wasn't for Pamper Me Pink, I wouldn’t have known I had cancer,” she said.

Pomerleau explained she had insurance, but the mammogram wasn’t covered. She filled out the Pamper Me Pink fund paperwork and a few weeks later was called back into the office when they discovered the breast cancer.

“If it wasn’t for your program they wouldn’t have found it so early and it could have been much worse,” she said.

She pointed to the more than 400 in attendance and said it’s because of donations from community members that keep the fund going that has helped more than 600 people receive mammograms in Culpeper.

She said that Pamper Me Pink brings together people that might only see each other once a year at the event - and they all share a special bond.

For Pomerleau, that bond saved her life.

I have been involved with Culpeper Youth since May 2018. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience, and made lifelong friendships within the group. It is great to interact and collaborate with such a dedicated group of people. In addition to that, we hold several activities such as holiday parties, cook-outs, and movie nights. This year, I am secretary of Culpeper Youth. I am extremely excited to try new activities and hold events within make the program a yearly event.

Silent auction set for Rodney Moyer Saturday

Bethlehem Christian Fellowship will host a fundraiser silent auction for longtime member and worship band member Rodney Moyer Saturday.

Moyer, a member of Remnant, the church’s worship band, came to church a few weeks ago with an eye patch on, said Pastor Sue Gregg.

At the time, he was experiencing double vision but he still wanted to play guitar in the worship band.

It was only later that week that he found out what was causing it - nonHodgkin's Lymphoma that presented itself as two masses at the base of his brain stem. According to Gregg, it’s a rare strain of the disease as he has no evidence of the disease in his lymph nodes.

Now the church is planning a silent auction fundraiser for the man Gregg calls “a Godly man.”

“He’s a great guy, he’s been a member of the church for longer than I can remember,” Gregg said.

“It’s been progressing so fast.”

Moyer, who’s been a student at Bethlehem Christian University as well, has been lifted up by the church.

“We’ve just been praying for him, and him knowing what the word of God says for healing,” Gregg said.

“His family has been overwhelmed by the prayers and the stuff that has been brought in for the auction.

That’s been a great encouragement to them.”

The silent auction will be held from 1-4 p.m. p.m. Oct. 26 at Bethlehem Christian Fellowship, 371 Lakeside Drive, Culpeper. All proceeds benefit Moyer’s ongoing medical costs and chemotherapy.

Moyer, who is a self-employed carpenter, hasn’t been able to work since his diagnosis so Gregg said the family appreciates all the help.

“We’ve been given some magnificent things,” Gregg said.

“Grand Furniture Store donated a Lazy Boy, we have a $1,500 drum kit, we have a $1,500 four-wheeler. We have $300 and $400 guitars, studio time. Just an amazing amount of things have been donated by local businesses. We have a lot of gift certificates.”

Gregg flipped through a large stack of papers, representing easily more than 200 auction items.

“I think it’s just Culpeper, people are just giving,” Gregg said. “It just warms your heart to see so many people donate and most people don’t

“It’s difficult to believe for a healing when you’re feeling the pain, but when you see God moving in such a way it makes it easier to believe he has it physically as well,” Gregg said.

Gregg said if the public can’t make the silent auction, folks can donate to Bethlehem Christian Fellowship in Rodney’s name and the money will go to his family.

Event showcases world cultures in Culpeper A sampling of world cultures with

local connections will be showcased for the public at the Culpeper Celebrates Unity program on October 24 at 7:00 p.m. at A. G. Richardson Elementary School.

“Culpeper is blessed with an amazing richness of people representing cultures from around the world. We want to learn about and better appreciate our friends and neighbors at this event,” says organizer Joan McBride.

Featured will be singing, dancing, instrumental performances, and stories and traditions from Africa, Europe, South America, the Middle East, and the Far East, plus some home-grown American offerings.

Governor Northam announces $180,000 in Virginia Community Business Launch awards. The Town of Culpeper is one of four recipients this year, sharing the spotlight with the Town of Buchanan, Giles County and the Industrial Development Authority of the City of Norton.

The Community Business Launch (CBL) program builds on the tradition of DHCD’s business support strategies, placing the community at the heart of entrepreneurial and small business development. “We know community support plays a crucial role in the success of an entrepreneur. It starts with a community’s unique vision for its future and then uses the competition to find and foster the entrepreneurs that connect with that vision” said Jessica Hartness, Business Launch Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

The CBL is designed to assist communities in taking a systems approach to defining and pursuing an asset-based small business development strategy. It is designed to excite and educate the community from local residents to local elected officials about the opportunities and impact of entrepreneurial and small business development. This grant will provide the tools to effectively prepare multiple entrepreneurs to operate successful businesses in a designated area.

The Town of Culpeper’s designated area focuses on the heart of the historic downtown. Covering .22 square miles, the designated area includes the Culpeper Downtown Urban Development area, which is the Town’s sixth designated growth area that encourages adaptive reuse of existing buildings, higher density new construction, and intentional design to complement the Town’s historic characteristics.

CCPS breaks ground on Career & Technical Education School

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer The “Coolest Thing in Education” broke ground Thursday.

The new Culpeper County Public Schools career and technical education school will be built on property along McDevitt Drive, leased from Germanna Community College as part of a 60-year lease.

The CTE school will house a nursing program, culinary arts, maker spaces, cosmetology, five different areas of building trade, automotive (including diesel), EMT, cyber security and more.

The $17.3 million facility is slated to be open Jan. 2021 and the construction is expected to be finished within a year.

Holding up a shirt made for the occasion, CCPS Superintendent Tony Brads pointed out that while CTE means career and technical education - it also can mean the “coolest thing in education.”

Brads pointed to a sea change around 2016, when CCPS recognized that technical skills and laborers were needed. Brads approached Culpeper County Administrator John Eggertson about forming a joint CTE committee. That

Brads praised CCPS CTE director Randi Richards-Lutz for helping move the conversation along.

“I think Culpeper County and CCPS is blessed to have the best career and technical director, in all of the Commonwealth of Virginia,” Brads said. “She is passionate about career and technical education and programs - the students and the adults they will become.”

The committee found that CCPS did CTE very well, Brads said, but more space and education was needed. Hence, the CTE school was proposed.

It was unanimously embraced by educators, politicians and the public.

Now, within a year, Culpeper will again be on the cutting edge of CTE education in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

➤ MCW brings familiar faces, rising stars to Eastern View

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Nov. 2, there’s going to be Chaos in Culpeper.

For the first time in more than three decades, professional wrestling returns to the town.

Eastern View High School athletic director Mark Settle has fond memories of wrestling.

He recalls in the late 1970s/early 1980s the iconic Ric Flair and Chief Jay

Strongbow wrestling for the National Wrestling Alliance at Culpeper Junior High - selling out the building and sending a unique energy through Culpeper.

Now, he and the EVHS Athletic Boosters are looking to bring that same energy in a resurgent period for “pro graps.”

“This has been on my bucket list,” Settle said, laughing when told he would make a good pro wrestling promoter.

“Part of me has been wanting to bring wrestling back to the Central Virginia area.”

Settle had heard about other athletic directors that had hosted wrestling benefits - so he started to reach out to promotions. At first, it was crickets - no one answered his calls. ➤ See Chaos, Page 7

Dennis Wipprecht, owner of MCW Pro Wrestling, said the promotion has been open since 1998 and their passion for the product is evident.

“Our shows have a blend of everything,” he said. “Hard hitting, high flying, some fun and games and everything in between. We’ve been looking to expand to Va. and got a call from Eastern View High School about helping them raise some money. So it was a no brainer for us. Anytime we can come to a high school and help them we are ready for it.”

Wipprecht said it’s important to support the schools, volunteer fire departments and smaller businesses that prop up MCW. “As a small wrestling company a lot of people don't give us a chance,” he said.

“And these schools and fire stations are happy to have us. So without them we wouldn’t be in business. This is our passion. It's not our regular jobs. So all of us love to help any school of community we can.”

It’s an advantageous time for EVHS to get into the pro wrestling game, as the longtime TV staple - especially in the South - is having a bit of a resurgence.

WWE has been a mainstay since the 1980s but young upstart company AEW has younger fans and diehards talking with renewed energy about the athletic event. WWE Smackdown recently moved to FOX, AEW and WWE NXT are engaged in the “Wednesday Night Wars” for viewers and even Settle’s beloved NWA is making a comeback with their YouTube show “Powerrr.”

“I see it back on FOX on Friday nights, it seems like there’s some hype out there for it - any fundraiser you have to strike when the iron is hot,” Settle said.

The EVHS boosters have had innovative fundraisers before - all to help support the approximately $7,500 in scholarships they give out each year and to help supplement the fund for general athletics. In years past they’ve had a mattress sale, a car test drive and a comedy night.

Now they dive into the world of spandex, suplexes and snapmares. Settle is hoping the MCW show is a hit.

“I think they will be,” Settle said. “I’m putting the trust into him (Dennis) that he’s going to give us a good card. We’re

hoping this isn’t our last, we’re hoping this is a series and we can add a layer or two each time to make it a fun night for families and beneficial for the boosters.”

The card is headlined by former WWE performer Swoggle - formerly known as Hornswoggle. Portrayed by now best-selling author Dylan Postl, the character of Hornswoggle had many roles in the WWE - as the son of Fit Finlay, the son of Vince McMahon himself and finally as the mascot of the Three Man Band, where he competed in the first “WeeLC” match in wrestling history.

Postl, born with achondroplasia, a condition that causes disproportionate dwarfism, lived his dream of being a professional wrestler and chronicles it in his book “Life is Short and So Am I,” it’s a memoir of elation and anguish, triumph and disappointment, and of how an endlessly positive outlook combined with the unwavering support of family and friends helped a long shot become a success in his industry and a loving, responsible father.

Also appearing on the card is former WWE/TNA star Billy Gunn, former WWE star Melina, Dante Caballero, Brandon Scott, Portia, Gia and Aria Palmer as well.

For Settle, none of those names ring a bell but he’s hoping they can make the same memories Ric Flair did for him.

“In my older age I hadn’t followed wrestling so I stayed out of touch with all of this stuff,” Settle said.

“From the business side he had what we wanted. Hopefully this grows, I’ve had positive feedback this week. We’d love to fill the gym, what we do get is a win-win for our boosters and our scholarship recipients.”

Tickets are $40 for a ringside front row seat, $30 for the second row, $25 for floor seating and $20 for bleacher seats.

TECHNOLOGY Attack of the Drones Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a plane, its sup…nope it’s a squadron of drones in a “Finger-four” formation delivering prescription medications to your neighborhood. We are on the precipice of major drone utilization in the United States, commonly known as UAS (unmanned aircraft systems).

Expansion & Utilization Over the past several years we’ve seen an increase in personal drone usage. You may have a neighbor that flies them for fun, your favorite youtuber incorporating them into their videos, and new businesses popping up offering drone photography.

The wide spread adoption of

drones led the FAA to create a drone certificate program. This was to adopt safety standards and educate new-pilots on different airspace, how to operate around airports, weather planning, and maintenance procedures.

For years we’ve heard about Amazon testing drone delivery programs. UPS has recently started testing package delivery. CVS and UPS announced just this week they will begin delivery of prescription drugs. This was in response to FedEx and Walgreens teaming up to do the same with a test program in Christiansburg, Virginia.

I also learned the US Postal Service is now soliciting experts to begin their own testing procedures similar to what UPS is currently doing.

It takes a Village The adoption of drones goes beyond just the drone hardware itself. There is an entire ecosystem that allows these devices to function autonomously

depending on the mission at hand.

This includes skillsets in big data, artificial intelligence, software development, robotics, network infrastructure, cybersecurity, and advanced videography to just name a few.

Virginia is one of the leaders in the advancement of UAS. The Center for

Innovative Technology runs their own Unmanned Systems Center . They work with leading universities and policy makers to help innovate and cultivate business opportunities within Virginia.

Advantages The advantages of an advanced drone program are numerous for specific industry sectors. For first responders, sending in a drone is clearly a safer alternative to sending a person in mountainous regions or other hazardous situations (fire, chemical).

Drones are also a cheaper alternative to traditional pilot programs as well. The commercial industry drones are typically much smaller, run on batteries, and of course there is not a traditional pilot to pay in the cockpit.

Drones can also be a faster solution to acquire critical data for large infrastructure projects such as building highways or high-rise towers.

T R AV E L Rest days are needed In my last article, I wrote about entering the Meseta, the arid plain in the middle of the Camino.

After the Meseta I entered the city of Leon which is the official end of the Meseta.

Coming into Leon—a large, bustling city—is a bit of a culture shock after days of hiking in the quiet flatlands of the Meseta. I’m happy to be there, though, because this is where I will be take a rest day. After three weeks of walking, a rest day is welcome indeed. Leon is a lovely city, full of pedestrian walkways, medieval buildings, and busy cafes. It is a great place to rest up for the mountains of Galicia which await me and the other pilgrims.

people. It was once a Roman garrison and the name ‘Leon’ derives from the word ‘legion’ because a Roman legion was once garrisoned there. Leon has a truly magnificent cathedral (the Pulchra Leonina) which belongs in the same conversation with the other great cathedrals of Europe. Built in the 13th century, the cathedral has 125 stained glass windows, many of which are truly magnificent. (Thanks to a grant from the Getty family, the windows are currently being cleaned and restored.)

I also spend an evening at the 11th century basilica of San Isidore where the relics of St. Isidore are housed. An American priest with whom I have been traveling served a Pilgrim’s Mass at the basilica alongside a Spanish priest. It was nice to hear English as well as the Spanish at the service.

The walk out of Leon was a long one—nearly 21 miles. I walked nearly 45,000 steps on that one day alone.

at the end. Set in the countryside of Villevante, the hotel has a lovely stream next to it where weary pilgrims can cool their feet. The hoteliers were incredibly gracious, offering drinks and carrying my bag to my room. Dinner was delicious and plentiful.

I should say a word about lodging on the Camino. Accommodations are quite varied, both in terms of quality and price. Many pilgrims stay in albergues which are like youth hostels. Albergues are cheap, but spartan, usually with bunk beds, shared bathrooms, and shared laundry facilities. They are many different types of albergues (municipal, privately-run, parish-run, etc.) and the quality can vary. Albergues are quite cheap, running from $4 to $12.

Some albergues are actually donativos (by donation only—whatever amount you wish to give). Hotels are also quite varied, from lower-priced hostals (around $30-$40) to fancy paradors which are old buildings such as monasteries or castles which have been restored into luxury hotels.

I had a Spanish company set up my lodging beforehand and am staying

mostly at modest hotels. The company also arranged to have my luggage transferred from hotel to hotel, so I only have to carry a day pack with basics in it (water, blister care products, rain gear, etc.) The company has laid things out very well. The days are generally not too long or too hard, though occasionally a day can be quite challenging (as in the 21-mile day I just mentioned).

Tomorrow I attempt one of the most strenuous days on the Camino—a long climb to a Celtic town called O’Cabreiro. The walk is basically eight miles straight uphill. After O’Cabreiro, though, I will have only 10 more days until I reach the cathedral in Santiago.

After nearly a month of walking, I’m happy to be nearing the end.

As a result, Rodney has been unable to work and has subsequently had to close down his small construction business.

Dr. Janet Gullickson, President of Germanna Community College, said that only 25 to 30 percent of occupations require a bachelor’s degree - the new CTE school will help cover the rest.

“We have to change the way we do business now in education,” Gullickson said. “We have to support people who want to do the work.

It’s so exciting to think 50 years from now, that we can come here and see it.”

Brad Rosenberger, Culpeper County Board of Supervisors Chairman, said the board has desired a CTE school for some time.

“It’s a great day for Culpeper County,” Rosenberger said. “I was thinking on the drive over here that it’s a windy, blustery day - but it’s winds of change. We are going

So, it is election time once again.

Wait, doesn’t it seem like we’ve all been in a perpetual election for the last three years? Remember when elections happened and then people went back to being

normal?

Those were the good old days, I guess. Like it or not it’s once again time for political bickering, social media grandstanding, battles in the comments section, commercials with creepy music and of course thousands of urgent letters to the editor. Send yours in we are waiting!

Everyone starts elbowing into my column space with endorsements, conspiracies, pleas and proclamations and it gets a bit crampy in the old editorial section.

Just keep it civil!

Perhaps my biggest election peeve is the dizzying onslaught of yard signs.

Has anyone ever looked at a political sign and said, “I will vote for this person because they have a nice name, a sexy font, dazzling colors or because one sign is larger?”

What about the homemade ones?

Those tend to be wacky. I saw one in the woods once near a fishing spot that listed at least 15 conspiracies—I walked a little quicker.

There’s another hand-painted one on Route 3 that reads “Feel the Bern

Laufer is the right choice for the State Senate On November 5th voters will be asked to make some serious choices between candidates for State Senate.

The incumbent, Bryce Reeves, born in California, has been in office since 2011.

In his eight years in office he has only recently sponsored bills, these involving a vanity license plate celebrating Virginia Beach in light of the mass shooting there, as well as funding a shooting victims donation program.

These are noble goals; however, Bryce has also supported legislation expanding gun carry laws which can potentially increase the likelihood of

All around town these signs are ruining everyone’s view, blocking sightlines and spoiling green hillsides.

Deer must weave in-and-out of signs to get hit these days!

Do signs really work? Do they equal votes?

They must, because it seems that all one must do is buy thousands of them.

Who picks them up?

An ancient alien theorist once said, “all politics are local.”

The other day I spotted lots of school election signs hanging in all six local elementary schools.

They were creative, funny and better than the ones grownups create.

I still recall one from a couple years back it read, “Please vote for me, I already told my parents I won.”

This kid must have had a few ethical concerns, but that never stopped a political dream in this country. Never let honesty ruin a strong run for office.

It also shows a solid sense of humor and a serious will to succeed.

There are plenty of traditional posters, like those that proclaim, “no bullying, better lunches and more social activities.” Those are a bit standard. Another favorite is the poster that touts little league success or a willingness to dress the part. I mean some kids really do dress like a treasurer or supervisor.

Those running for school president tend to be the kids that have it all--nicely matching teeth, cool hair, normal noses and plenty of successful

endeavors in and out of school. Their posters are most likely outsourced to a top-flight marketing firm or perhaps an overly enthusiastic parent.

Vice-presidential candidates tend to be Machiavellian in elementary school. They tend to be under-theradar types… the type of kid who suggests no homework on Friday or Tuesday.

As a kid there can be a shady past, including how your parents dress you, strange school photos, oddly cut hair, misshapen heads and of course the ever-embarrassing nose dig that you thought was cloaked in secrecy.

Are these candidates fully vetted by the press? Is there an active press in your child’s school? Don’t just rely on crayon scribbles on the bathroom wall for information on your preferred candidate.

Do they have a scandalous history of homework neglect, talking too loudly in the hall or perhaps a few careless tosses of tater tots in the cafeteria?

There must be a level of trust between student candidates and the school’s administrators, right? There can’t be any mavericks or budding revolutionaries in the mix.

Admittedly, I had a rebellious nature as a kid, and it led to a middle school journey to military school.

Be careful of the kids that boldly proclaim an end to all homework or believe in serving only ice cream for lunch. Be wary of too many promises that are largely out of their realm of power.

This seems inconsistent: does Reeves stand with gun violence victims or with the likelihood of increased mass shootings?

Reeves’ other positions would seem to restrict human rights and liberties: he would discriminate against those with alternate gender identities or sexual orientations, against hard working immigrants who need asylum whilst seeking American citizenship, against a woman’s right to make parenthood decisions in the privacy of a consultation with her physician, against those making a belowpoverty wage to earn more money for the work they do. And, that’s just a start.

Amy Laufer, a former teacher and school board chair, will support

all aspects of health care, including insurance coverage for pre-existing medical decisions, making the best decisions for the education of our youth and promoting fiscal responsibility (once a hallmark of Reeves’s GOP, but no more - just think of our out-of-control national debt).

In addition, Laufer will pointedly attempt to work across party lines to ensure effective compromises on legislation that will move forward and not stall due to partisan politics.

I want my vote to count for my personal safety - and for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all, so I plan to vote for Amy Laufer for State Senate.

Proven leadership needed for Culpeper While it is commendable for people to step up and run for public service, it is much more important to bring relevant life and professional experiences to the elected office. The demand for immediate contribution from elected officials does not afford the luxury of “on the job training” for a novice.

Culpeper is fortunate to have proven local leaders on the ballot in November- Sheriff Scott Jenkins, BOS candidates; Paul Bates and Tom Underwood, and NIck Freitas for Delegate.

Sheriff Jenkins, born and raised in Culpeper, has been in law enforcement for his entire professional life and has always put the safety and security of Culpeper citizens first. He showed courage in

signing an ICE Agreement despite all of the “false” narrative spun by the open border progressive Democrats who place illegal aliens well being ahead of the rights of U. S. Citizens. One only needs to look at Montgomery County Maryland where numerous violent crimes have occurred since July due to sanctuary cites and law enforcement’s refusal to uphold the law. Scott Jenkins is a proven professional law enforcement officer and will continue to do what is best for Culpeper.

Paul Bates’s family has lived in Culpeper for generations. In fact, Rixeyville was named for one of his ancestors. Paul and his family have a vested interest in Culpeper and his desire to provide a wonderful place for his children and grandchildren to call home. In addition to his family’s love of farming, Paul operated a successful automotive business for over twenty five years in Culpeper.

During those years, Paul supported community youth activities in addition to Culpeper School athletic programs. The community is truly grateful for the Bates family for their tireless work in bringing the Soap Box Derby Track to fruition.

Paul Bates is a proven leader and has Culpeper’s interest at heart.

Tom Underwood would bring a wealth of life and business experiences to the BOS. During his prior service on the BOS, he stood out as a clear leader on all financial matters, especially his expertise in analyzing the budget. Without exception, board members respected his commitment to financial integrity. Tom’s job required him to devote full time efforts out of Town. Thankfully, Tom returned to Culpeper to raise his family and operate Underwood Farms in Reva.

He is a proven leader and would bring invaluable expertise to the

BOS. Nick Freitas is a fellow military veteran who knows that the “price of freedom is not free”. All we hear from the Socialist Trending Democrats is “free college, free healthcare for all(including illegal aliens), open borders, and monthly check for all whether they work or not”. Our economy cannot survive such irresponsible policies. Sounds great, but as Margaret Thatcher once said , “Socialism is great until you run out of other people’s money”.

Look at history and you will see that Socialism fails and people suffer. Nick Freitas is a prove leader and will defend our interests in Richmond.

Please join me in voting for these proven leaders who will embrace all that is good for Culpeper.

Each one of us is to be a contestant. Some contests are not for us, but this is like a relay race in which we all must share.

This activity may be the defense of an intellectual position; it may be some generous attitude of moral judgment. The scene of the contest is simply the place where duty calls.

The action is a program of faithful living.

The great contest of faith is at once a risk and release. We were safe on the sidelines, where we could make no mistakes; now we are in

the game. We may fall openly, and we may receive the brickbats hurled by critics. We will be ridiculed, but we will not be ignored. This much is certain. We are no longer victims of cheap unworthy repressions, nor are we bound by cowardly acquiescence of evil. We have gone all out for truth.

When a challenger has nothing to say positive about their own position but relies on negative dialogue to drag a man down so they may appear better, you have to ask yourself if this who you want to lead

you into the future.

Looking back Scott Jenkins affirmed, “I have kept the faith”.

Faith to him had been a living, vital path to life, not some creed. Our sworn calling is a constant invitation to enter that contest of faith in which there is daily obedience to this vision. It is our supreme privilege to keep the faith day by day.

The choice is simple...vote Scott Jenkins for Sheriff!

Denise has strong communication and interpersonal skills, is very

knowledgeable, and looked at for information and leadership. She was recently honored at the 100th Annual Commissioners of the Revenue of Virginia Association Conference held in Williamsburg as a co-recipient of this year’s Outstanding Deputy Award.

To be successful, a Treasurer must motivate and oversee staff by possessing superior planning,

organizational, and supervisory skills to achieve short-term and long-range goals. I wholeheartedly encourage you to support Denise as I believe she is the candidate who has the critical knowledge, character, and strength to serve Culpeper’s citizens.

CJ’s leadership and law enforcement skills are evident. As Culpeper County Sheriff, I witnessed CJ’s unwavering gift to be a kind, caring individual, sensitive to the community’s needs. CJ is an excellent listener and is willing to examine all sides by not being quick to judge: qualities needed for a sheriff.

Relationship building is also a trait an effective, positive Sheriff

needs. CJ demonstrated that ability with law enforcement agencies when I appointed him to the first multi-jurisdiction Gang Task Force comprised of the Culpeper County Sheriff ’s Office, Culpeper Town Police Department, and Virginia State Police.

Through his Sheriff ’s Office experience and leadership, CJ brings knowledge of Sheriff Office divisions and operations. CJ also understands working with the federal government is important and has experience

obtaining grants for the Culpeper County Sheriff ’s Office, lessening county taxpayers’ burden. He is not one to waste taxpayers’ dollars.

CJ does not run from issues and knows how to fairly and honorably lead.

I ask the citizens of Culpeper County to cast their all-important vote for CJ Johnson November 5 as the next Sheriff.

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer “They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky, The Addams family.”

Culpeper will get a chance to meet the iconic, spooky clan during Culpeper County High School’s production of “The Addams Family - The Musical,” Oct. 24-26.

“Some know it, some know it from their families,” CCHS director Maxi Mitchell said. “We have a very dedicated group of theater followers who have known about this musical since it came out and they’ve been dying to do it.”

The cast includes Tyler Bowyer as patriarch Gomez Addams, Olivia Searle as Morticia, Kasey Mize as Wednesday, Mike Marshall as Pugsley, Kaiden Rojas as Lurch and Cole Edwards as Uncle Fester. Freshman Christian Soderholm portrays Wednesday’s boyfriend Lucas.

The comedy begins as Wednesday brings home Lucas and his parents - Mal and Alice - for dinner one night and the usual Addams family craziness ensues.

“Will love survive and conquer?” Mitchell asked with a laugh.

Most of the principal characters will admit they knew nothing about the source material but they love what they’ve learned.

“I didn’t even know who the Addams Family was until we got the script for the musical,” Bowyer said. “I think it’s cool that they are back in style now (with a new animated movie) and I think it’s cool that we’re doing the musical at the same time.”

Bowyer admitted he went back and watched some of the older TV shows from the 1960s and

the 1990s movie.

“He’s a combination of both, I try to incorporate some of my mannerisms as well,” Bowyer said.

Searle says the 1990s movie was one of her favorites growing up.

“I don’t know what that says about my childhood,” she said with a laugh. “I think the movies and the TV show give off a (goth) vibe but the musical has a lesson of growing up and coming of age.”

Cole Edwards, a sophomore, has played a lot of comedic characters already in his CCHS career, but he said Fester has other qualities as well.

“I think there’s this heart that a lot of other people don’t see in him,” Edwards said. “He has this undeniable childish feeling - especially when it comes to love. He’s almost adorable in the way he talks about the world.”

Mitchell said the comedy was tailored toward the cast of characters - with most of the students have displayed their comedic chops in the past on the CCHS stage.

“They have excellent comedic timing,” Mitchell said.

The cast, of about 25, includes an ensemble cast of spooky “ancestors” who dance around the set - which was designed by art teachers Nicholas Searle and Marla Bell.

Ashley Elkins, a math teacher at CCHS, is working on the “Broadway level” choreography with the students and said the entire cast has picked up on it quickly.

“The highlight is the tango, that’s what Morticia and Gomez do to ‘reignite the flame,’” Elkins said.

The musical will be performed at CCHS at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 and then at 2 and 7 p.m.

Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger visits Culpeper Head Start and Kid Central Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, 7th District of Virginia United States House of Representatives, toured Culpeper Head Start/Early Head Start and Kid Central's offices and classrooms on Tuesday morning.

Spanberger enjoyed touring classrooms and learned how Culpeper Head Start and Kid Central positively im-

pacts the lives of children, families and the community in Culpeper County.

Children had the opportunity to ask questions and even treat the representative with a few songs. Rep. Spanberger took time from a busy schedule to visit this local program and view renovations at the Galbreath/Marshall Building.
