Here you can get to know one of our providers, Dr. Armin Harandi.

How long have you been practicing medicine?

I have been practicing for over 15 years.

What is your background?

I grew up in Iran and earned my medical degree from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran. I then moved to the U.S. to do a joint replacement fellowship at University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville followed by a sports medicine fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I practiced orthopedics in Michigan for a few years but moved

back to Virginia when a position opened with UVA Orthopedics.

What made you pursue a specialty in orthopedics?

My father is also an orthopedic surgeon, so I grew up listening to him discuss cases and conditions that really intrigued me. I pursued medicine and orthopedics largely because of him.

What attracted you to UVA Orthopedics, a department of Culpeper Medical Center?

When I did my joint replacement fellowship at UVA in 2009, I liked the culture and camaraderie of the orthopedic group. When the practice had an opening, I decided to join.

What specific conditions and injuries do you treat?

Joint replacement surgeries are a big part of our practice and we see a lot of patients with hip and knee arthritis.

We also treat fractures, sports-related injuries, including ACL tears and meniscus tears, as well as shoulder injuries, such as rotator cuff tears.

What do you want readers

to know about hip and knee replacements?

These surgeries are impressive in how they can improve so many aspects of a patient’s life. Their pain is removed and their mobility improves, which can help improve other health conditions and mitigate some health risks.

Is there a particular patient experience that stands out to you?

One of the first patients I saw at UVA Orthopedics had avascular necrosis of the hip, an extremely painful condition where the bone deteriorates.

She had gone undiagnosed for years and was actually misdiagnosed with a spine condition that she underwent surgery for, which of course didn’t resolve the problem. I’ll always remember the joy in her eyes after we’d accurately diagnosed her and performed a total hip replacement.

What are you most passionate about as a provider?

I’m a perfectionist, so I’m passionate about creating perfect results every

single time. We do hundreds of similar surgeries, but I look at every one of those as a unique case.

What are your hopes for the future of orthopedics?

I am hopeful for more progress in the field of tissue engineering.

We are years away from getting to those goals, but it would be a huge advancement to someday be able to use tissue-engineered cartilage and bone instead of metal in total hip and knee replacements.

What would people be surprised to learn about orthopedics?

Patients are often surprised to learn about the tools and materials that we use in orthopedics, such as drills and power saws. They’re surprised that we use tools that look similar to ones they have around the house.

Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center remembers infant lives Having a child should be the happiest moment of a person’s life so when that happiness turns tragic - it can often be debilitating.

Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center is looking to remember the little lives lost - either during pregnancy or infancy - with a candle lighting at the Culpeper Medical Center Healing Garden Oct. 13 from 6 to 7 p.m.

Cindy Curtis, RNC,IBCLC,CCE,CD, with the Culpeper Medical Center Birth Center, said Oct. 15 is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day and that the hospital is striving to recognize the lives lost and help parents cope with the loss.

Curtis said that about 10 to 15 percent of pregnancies nationally end in miscarriage and that still birth - pregnancy loss after 20 weeks - is about 1 in 100.

“A large population of women have had miscarriages, we see that all the time at the birth center,” Curtis said.

Remembering those lost and showing the parents that they are not forgotten is important to Curtis - who lost a child due to miscarriage nearly 30 years ago.

“I think it’s very important, the couple of years that we’ve done it it’s just about knowing that you’re not alone,” Curtis said. “People forget that you were ever pregnant. To have a day dedicated to remembering a baby that you lost - whether it was at six weeks or at birth, is really important to help with the healing.”

The hospital has hosted the candle lighting the past couple of years and has had a small turnout, but Curtis hopes more parents who have dealt with infant loss or miscarriage come out to the ceremony.

“The population we have here in our smaller area, it’s smaller than if you went to Charlottesville,” Curtis said. “We still feel like even though our numbers aren’t huge, it’s very important for the parents.”

Amy and Brian Bowling will speak, as they know all too well what it feels like to lose a child.

Amy has founded the Fertile Soil Foundation, after losing a child in 2010 and suffering through infertility issues.

My whole academic life has had one purpose; getting me into college. Now that this time has finally come, I need to find a new objective.

My idea of how college will be has been based off of Hallmark movies and stories from my peers ahead of me. What I do know for sure about college is the type of experience I want from it. I want my experience to be full of personal growth and enlightenment, two things that I haven’t quite achieved in a small town. Being from a small town with limited opportunities, I’ve felt that my personal growth has been stunted. My whole life I’ve been bound to a town with less than 20,000 people. I’ve made do with what there was but I’m ready to broaden my perspective and college is the perfect opportunity for that.

Many think that college is just another necessity for the career that you want but I believe it’s a necessity for figuring out who you are when you’re not confined to your small town. The atmosphere in college allows for many different opportunities and avenues to go down. The diversity of the student population will allow me to learn more about different cultures than any textbook could teach me. Along with the student population, the opportunities from just being on a college campus near a lively city are endless.

These opportunities will not only help me in my career but with the personal growth I’ve been striving for. don’t have that child to bring home that’s part of what we do in the birth center is that we have the resources to give,” Curtis said.

Fauquier Health Ethics Committee Presentation On October 23, 2019 from 12 pm

to 1:30 pm the Ethics Committee will present a discussion entitled “Dilemmas in Caring for Patients with Dementia.” This free event will be held in Sycamore A and B rooms at Fauquier Hospital and is open to community members and employees of the hospital. Karen Lee will talk about the issues she addresses while caring for a relative with Dementia in her home. Sophia Cameron, Community Relations Director at The Villa at Suffield Meadows will talk about the option of an extended care facility.

The emphasis of this presentation will be to encourage open communication between all family members about ethical/legal issues.

Patients will need a comfortable setting to be able to make their health care decisions known to their families and health care professionals.

Culpeper Tourism Dept. hosts cemetery walking tours Join us for a walking tour of the Culpeper National Cemetery. With over a dozen stops, the tour will primarily focus on the original section of the cemetery. You will hear the history behind five monuments and the stories of many who fought in Culpeper during the Civil War. Every single person buried in the National Cemetery decided to defend our country during their lives. Many paid the ultimate cost, others died peacefully in their beds. Each one of them has a story. We will share some of these stories during our afternoon tour.

LOCAL NEWS Art of Aging Expo a huge success with seniors

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Aging gracefully is an art - one that was addressed at the Art of Aging Expo Tuesday at Germanna Community College.

More than 65 vendors turned out to talk to approximately 500 attendees, about Medicare, health hazards, scams targeting seniors and nonprofits that can help citizens as they age.

Ellen Phipps, Executive Director for Aging Together, said this was the largest expo the organization has coordinated.

“It’s really critical, because a lot of older adults are really quite isolated and they don’t really know where to go to get information,” Phipps said.

“We’ve had five buses from each senior center here today and that’s what Aging Together is really about

- connecting people to resources.

This is like a one-stop shop.”

Seniors had a chance to get a flu shot, have health care screenings, get their antiques appraised, receive information on Medicare, have their documents shredded and more.

Phipps, who took over as executive director in July, credited Jenny Biggs with putting the expo together. Seniors from the five-county region - Culpeper, Fauquier, Rappahannock, Madison and Orange - roamed the tables at Germanna, learning about the communities they live and the services available to them.

Phipps said the area is attracting many seniors who are retiring to these communities.

“First of all, it's a beautiful area,” Phipps said. “You have the hospitals, you have a plethora of services that you didn’t always have in this ➤ See Seniors, Page 7

➤ Former church building finds new purpose as fitness studio

By Amy Wagner Contributing writer Built in 1901 as an Episcopal Abbey in Sperryville, the historic a-frame church operates today as Stonewall Abbey Wellness, Rappahannock’s only wellness and fitness facility. Co-founded by Gordon Wicks and Susan Huff in 2014 the Abbey is open seven days a week and serves clientele from Madison, Culpeper and Fauquier counties though the majority are right out of Rappahannock county.

Business partners for the past five years, Wicks and Huff also co-founded Golden Harmony Fitness in Culpeper in 2014 however they later decided to close that location so they could focus on the Abbey.

“We wanted to put 100% of our energy into the community here in Sperryville,” said Wicks, a Fauquier County native and martial arts enthusiast.

Centrally located on Main Street in downtown Sperryville, Stonewall Abbey is open seven days a week and provides small group fitness classes; personal training; body work and cardio, strength and conditioning equipment. A year ago, Wicks and Huff decided to expand the Abbey and built the gym addition which provides a martial arts area, sauna, two bathrooms with showers, free weights, and manually operated cardio equipment.

Yoga is a primary draw at the Abbey, which is Huff’s specialty. Huff, who has been

practicing yoga since 2005, believes there is a yoga style for everyone. “Susan brings a pragmatic and simple approach to yoga,” said Wicks. “There is no fluff. She meets them where they are.” “It is important to find a balance between what you naturally possess and what you want to do,” said Huff.

Qigong (chee-gong) is another appeal at the Abbey and happens to be Wick’s specialty. Being very competitive growing up, and with no sport teams available at the time, Wicks found a physical outlet in Qigong.

At eighteen years of age, while in culinary school, Wicks met and began training with his master, Sifu Harvey. “I became enamored with everything about it (Qigong). I always had a large interest in world religions and philosophy. Qigong offered deeper insights into Asian philosophies,” said Wicks who is a nationally certified level three advanced instructor and a certified master instructor of the art.

In perpetual training mode, Wicks travels to Thailand for martial arts, trains with his master in Canada and trains here at home.

“By bringing ourselves back into our natural state, we are able to get back in touch and connect with nature,” said Wicks. “There is something greater than ourselves that we are part of. Qigong is a medical practice; a daily preventative to help promote body wellbeing,” said Wicks who describes Qigong as an art that embraces mind, body and spirit.

Fundraiser for Perez to be hosted by Premier Auto Saturday

By Amy Wagner Contributing writer A local business owner is hosting a fundraiser car show to help a local family offset some financial hardships after losing a young family member recently. A 2019 Eastern View graduate, eighteen-year-old Aris Eduardo Lobo Perez, was found dead in his jail cell in Pulaski County, Virginia just hours after his arrest on Sept.12.

This weekend the community is invited to come together to celebrate Perez’s life and provide some much-needed financial support to his family.

The community support seniors receive is also well known, just as Culpeper Senior Center coordinator Gladys Williams.

Williams said her seniors, many of whom were bussed to the expo, loved the opportunity to mingle with community members.

“This way they get out to see folks their age and it gives them the opportunity to see the freedoms they really have,” Williams said. “We go back and we talk about what’s out there and what will benefit them.”

Culpeper Town Police Department Master Police Officer Mike Grant greeted seniors as they came into the room, talking to them about the latest scams and what to be on the lookout for.

“When I teach at the senior center, I always tell them of the newest scams we’re aware of,” Grant said. “If they want information on the phone, don’t give it. Hang up on them and call that company back and see if they called you. You don’t know who you’re talking to 100 percent, don’t give any information out on the phone.”

Especially if the caller says they are a grandchild and need to post bail money with an ebay gift card or iTunes card.

“They are calling these folks and they know the grandkids names and they want money,” Grant said. “Any time they want money on a pay card or iTunes, it’s wrong.

Once you send it, we can’t get it back.”

Pastor Brad Hales, of Reformation Lutheran Church, has long been a staunch supporter of ministering to seniors. He listed the many ministries available at his church for older citizens - Caregiver Support, quilting and prayer shawl ministry, grandparenting ministry, senior counseling and more.

“This event has grown through the years, to see all the folks who are here sharing about what they do to help older adults in Culpeper is wonderful,” Hales said. “We

Khoury met Perez at Trull’s house and knew of him from the local soccer complex where Perez often played. When Khoury heard of Perez’s death he immediately wanted to help in some way.

“He has a very big heart,” said Trull of Khoury recently. “He is always trying to help others out.” Khoury invites the community to visit his shop this Saturday to enjoy the car show and music, grab a burger and support the Perez family. Representatives from Novant Health UVA Health Systems interacted with seniors, talking with them about where they can go to receive services locally.

“We are able to provide services locally, that many of those in our community could utilize including orthopedics, rehabilitative services, heart health services with our cardiovascular department and it’s right here in their backyard,” said Travis Chaney, R.N., director of surgical services at Novant Health UVA Health Systems Culpeper Medical Center.

Greg Harpine, director and owner of Souls in Harmony - a nonprofit that uses music to help with memory, talked about how his business has grown. They will be moving to Southridge Parkway and expanding the services they now offer.

“Our goal is to open up to the homecare community, you have people taking care of their loved ones - family members at home with dementia and Alzheimer’s and they have no resources,” Harpine said. “This is going to allow us to reach out to the home care community and offer these music services to them as well as educational components and support groups for caregiver stress.”

Rich and Jacki Kiser roamed through the expo and enjoyed talking to all of the vendors.

“There’s so many other vendors here that relate to us as we age,” Jacki Kiser said.

“This is a great place, if you have something in your work history that you can offer to the community - this is the place to talk to someone and they’ll help you out. There’s lots of them that will come and talk to your group there’s no charge for that. We just stopped at a booth where they told us about Medicare fraud.”

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Culpeper’s back roads were full of bicycles Saturday, thanks to the Culpeper Cycling Century.

Nearly 250 riders signed up for the 12th annual bicycle ride that traverses Culpeper, Madison and Fauquier counties.

Tabitha Riley, Programs & Facilities Supervisor for Culpeper County Parks and Recreation, said the annual ride has become one of the premiere bicycling events in the state.

“The first year this event was coordinated, we had 45 riders,” Riley said. “It’s been a lot of word of mouth, people come one year and then bring a friend the next year.”

“We’re a small ride, there’s a lot of other rides that are 2,500 participants and a lot of cyclists here don’t want to ride with that many people,” Riley said.

“We cap our ride at 500 people to provide that small, intimate feel. We provide quality rest stops, we have wonderful volunteers.”

while volunteer fire and rescue squads also provided support.

Riley said that the ride also gets help from the Culpeper Town Police Department, Culpeper County Sheriff ’s Office, Madison County Sheriff ’s Office and Fauquier County Sheriff ’s Office, Funds raised go toward the Culpeper County Recreation Foundation.

“The money goes back into building recreational amenities for the county,” Riley said. “Right now their main focus is the Culpeper Sports Complex. Their main focus the past few years has been the Bright Spot Inclusive Playground.”

decline in number of homes sold, though Culpeper County had a 1% increase and Caroline County had no year-over-year change. Inventory also fell throughout most of the region aside from Fredericksburg City, which had a 3% increase.

Evaluating the past month’s performance, Larry “Boomer” Foster, president of Long & Foster Real Estate, said, “the story remains the same in Fredericksburg—inventory continues to contract, though there are decent sale price increases.”

Culpeper AirFest celebrates 20 years

From what started as just a “pilot appreciation day” to now the “Best Little Airshow in the East” the Culpeper AirFest has had quite a ride in 20 years.

“We’re really proud of how the AirFest has become a unique combination of aviation and education,” Norm Laudermilch, AirFest Chairman said. “You see the education components now of every aspect of the airshow with the STEM program on Wednesday and Thursday and our Girls in Aviation program.

We’re about the marriage of aviation and education.”

The Culpeper AirFest originally started more than 20 years ago just as a fly-in, as pilots would meet up with their friends and give other folks rides. It evolved when Mike

Dale moved to Culpeper and he and his friends attracted the “Warbird” community. These planes used in World War II, Vietnam and other conflicts have a real following and have become the cornerstone of the Culpeper AirFest.

“It really is the backbone of our show,” Laudermilch said. “We’re a Warbird culture here at Culpeper Airfest.”

What sets those aircraft apart?

“People aren’t used to seeing those and they are loud,” local pilot Steve Nixon said. “It’s rolling thunder in the sky.”

Airport mechanic Tom Hazel said it’s fascinating to get a chance to peek into the history of war aviation by taking a deep dive into these aircraft.

“These are airplanes, they are machines, that’s what I like about it,” Hazel said. “Maintaining a Warbird today, isn’t just picking up a telephone and ordering a part. There’s a lot of thought that goes into how you get the end result because there’s

not a lot of parts out there.”

Andrew King, who owns Bald Eagle Biplane Rides, will be participating in his first AirFest - flying a 1928 Travel Air for the airmail demonstration. His plane was used for an air mail demonstration in 1938 commemorating the 20th anniversary of an airmail drop. He purchased it a few years ago and the majestic blue biplane has sparked many others interest in aviation after taking a ride in it.

For King, his love of flying was stoked by his father. In fact, he started flying before he could even drive.

“My dad was into it,” King said.

“He and my uncle were both into RC model airplanes and I grew up around it. I do biplane rides for money but generally I’ve worked on them. I have a one man shop in Culpeper County and I restore antique airplanes.”

Laudermilch said King is modest, that he has an extensive knowledge of over 100 types of aircraft and has flown and worked on many unique

planes and helicopters.

“Most of those types of aircraft are not flown by the general public,” Laudermilch said.

King said he’s excited about flying in the 20th anniversary AirFest.

“What’s neat about it is it’s our home airport,” King said. “It’s a 1928 biplane, they may be more rare than the Warbirds. It will be fun to educate the public about that.”

Education is important to pilots - and they are never at a loss with information.

“Most pilots are talkers,” King said with a laugh. “We’re evangelists for flying. Giving rides to people is a lot of the fun to it. I almost never have anyone get out without a smile on their face.”

The AirFest has typified that and grown over the years. The crowds that come out to see what we do here get to see what we are and what we offer to the community.”

Spreading the love of aviation is what’s important to all the pilots.

Nixon said he’s had at least three students come up and want to learn about flying a helicopter after seeing his R-22 demonstration at the AirFest.

Culpeper’s unique diversity of aircraft - from the Warbirds to Manfred Radius’ silent glider - is one thing that keeps the crowds of almost 10,000 coming back - but there’s more to the air show than that.

“Two things set us apart - one is the focus on Warbirds - and the second thing is the family nature of our show,” Laudermilch said. “Art Nalls was giving an interview the other day and he said that he was going to get out of the air show business - but there were two he would always do and one of them was Culpeper.”

Nalls, who pilots the iconic Harrier, had his first air show with the jet in Culpeper. It’s unique experiences like that, that keep pilots coming

“We’re not a high budget show,” Laudermilch said. “People come to Culpeper because they want to come and hang out.”

The 20th anniversary was a hot topic among pilots.

“We got phone calls from performers, twice as many as we could accommodate, that wanted to perform for us,” Laudermilch said.

many educational opportunities the AirFest presents - from Hazel’s Bearcraft program, which makes an aircraft from scratch, to Germanna’s drone races, all set the AirFest apart.

“It’s another part of our culture, it’s another part of our show that people like,” Laudermilch said.

“That’s how we got involved with the drone program with Germanna.”

“It’s kind of hard to take the airport to people, you have to get them out here,” Woodward said. “The multi facets of aviation, some people just know aviation as Dulles. They don’t realize all the things aviation has done throughout history. That’s why it’s so important to get people out here and see it, hear it and feel it.”

Culpeper Regional Airport 'a crown jewel'

While the Culpeper AirFest is celebrating 20 years, the home of the ‘Best Little Airshow in the East’ is marking its golden anniversary.

Tanya Woodward, Culpeper Regional Airport Manager said the AirFest helps highlight what makes the Culpeper airport special.

“It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the airport and the tenants we have here,” Woodward said.

Culpeper’s airport has grown in 50 years. Originally, there were two airports in Culpeper.

The one located out U.S. 29 and another located near where the Best Western is in town. The town and county decided there needed to be just one and the two airports were consolidated into one. When that happened, there were only seven temporary hangers at the airport located ➤ See Airport, Page 6

Now, the airport is home to 140 hangers, 158 based aircraft in Culpeper, two corporate hangers and 30 people on the waiting list.

“We have a wonderful culture here at the airport,” Woodward said. “All of our tenants get excited about it (the AirFest). The people who have hangars on the taxiway - which I call the oceanfront - they all have friends and family come. That’s their biggest event they do every year.”

While the county has always owned the airport, it didn’t actually take over operation until 1988.

Prior to that, fixed base operators ran it. Now, the county airport is self-sustaining, not needing any tax dollars to remain operational. It is able to fund itself thanks to hanger fees and jet fuel sales.

“It’s very rare for a general aviation airport to be able to do that,” Woodward said. “We are the second busiest non-towered airport in the state of Virginia.”

Girls in Aviation Day connects women excited about aviation

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Girl power will be front and center again Saturday morning at the Culpeper AirFest.

Girls in Aviation Day will be featured with two sessions on the morning of AirFest: 8:30 to 10:15 a.m. and from 10:30 to 12:15 p.m.

The event is free and open to girls ages 8-16.

Kelly Murphy, Director of Communications and Editor-in-Chief for Aviation for Women magazine said last year the inaugural event drew 125 girls to the AirFest, this year they’re hoping to host 200 young women interested in aviation.

“We’re excited and hope to have some returning girls,” Murphy said.

Attendees will be able to meet positive female role models - pilots, air traffic controllers, engineers and more.

“We’re all about trying to promote girls and young women to think about all the aviation possibilities out there,” Murphy said.

Highlights from last year’s event included an aircraft maintenance station, a flight simulator, remote controlled aircraft, and programming robots.

“Last year they got to meet positive female role models Each year Women in Aviation International gives out $600,000 in scholarships and Murphy said the event is critical for young girls and their parents to learn about resources to help them pursue their dreams.

This year, on the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum will have an exhibit.

Murphy said that females have an opportunity to break into aviation because of the needs of the workforce.

“We are about 7 percent of the commercial airline pilots today, about two percent of mechanics and technicians, demand for both those skill sets are very much in demand,” Murphy said. “There’s going to be this future demand for more pilots and more technicians.”

Last year, Girls in Aviation Day was featured at 95 events throughout the world involving 15,000 girls.

The Capital Region Chapter, for which Murphy has been a part of for more than 20 years, has about 200 members. She said that without the involvement of her father, she probably would not have been interested in aviation - and that is the role she is trying to fill for the young women involved with Girls in Aviation Day. The goal is simple, Murphy said.

“Getting more girls to under-

stand that this is a great career path and there’s a demand there in the future,” Murphy said. “It’s all based on STEM and its key to get them in the cockpit and working on an actual aircraft.”

Murphy pointed out that Girl Scout and Brownie troops are invited as it helps fulfill their “aviation fun” patch.

Students fall in love with STEM at Airfest

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Kaylee Clark and Alexis Harvey jumped into the cockpit of Steve Nixon’s helicopter, smiles covering their faces.

The two fifth graders at A.G. Richardson were just two of more than 700 fifth graders visiting the Culpeper Regional Airport for Culpeper AirFest STEM day - a collaboration between Germanna Community College, CCPS and local businesses.

The two young girls smiled broadly, sitting in the cockpit of the R-22, owned by local pilot Steve Nixon.

They touched the controls, they asked questions and most importantly - they learned.

“Most of them have not been in a helicopter so it’s a fun experience for them,” Nixon said. “I take a few minutes and explain the controls and then I tell them it’s like standing on a ball, they can reference that.”

Clark proudly recited that information when asked what her favorite part of the day was.

“I learned how to pilot a plane and a helicopter and riding in a helicopter is very similar to trying to balance on a ball,” Clark said. “You have to balance and can’t go one way too much

or the other way too much.”

Harvey said she has a real interest in STEM and Wednesday just helped increase her passion.

“My favorite part is the robots and steering them around,” Harvey said.

“I like to code stuff.”

Students received first hand training on robotic exercises, airplane building, solar kit builds experiments in states of matter, magnetic principles and electricity and where electricity comes from.

Matt Ortman, Instructional Technology Resource Teacher, for A. G. Richardson said that many students have an interest in STEM now and the schools are able to tap into the information they learn at home and expand on it.

“It’s amazing to see how much they know, a lot of kids come in with a lot because they are exposed to it at home,” Ortman said. “Luckily the school system has set aside money the past couple of years to purchase these sort of things. At A.G. for example we have Spheros, so if they don’t get it at home, they get exposed to it at school.”

He said his students were excited to come out to the airport Wednesday.

“They love it, they look forward to all the different activities,” Ortman said. “They love the hands on stuff

they have.”

Jim Charapich, Workforce Development and Community Education for Germanna Community College, said it's important to help students realize what they are having fun with can be translated into a profession.

“It gives them the basis for understanding and awareness for the skills needed for future jobs,” Charapich said. “We’ve tried to bring the latest technology and the latest options out so the kids have a chance to have a hands on experience in learning in

an environment that’s outside of school.”

Nixon was just one of a dozen pilots and volunteers who enjoyed sharing their knowledge and passion.

“It’s like anybody who has a profession, they like to share their profession with other people,” Nixon said. “It’s rewarding for us to show other people what we can do and help them get an interest in it. We’re exposing more than 700 kids to aviation, what more can you ask?” ➤ See STEM, Page 9

Cruisin For Heroes Classic Vehicle Display In conjunction with the Annual Culpeper Regional Airport AirFest, Cruisin For Heroes will again be at the show greeting all spectators and providing their unique display of vintage, classic and special vehicles to benefit the Fisher House Foundation.

Cruisin For Heroes mission is to provide a family friendly Vehicle Display at an event that will help raise awareness and funding for military organizations, veterans, first responders, local community service groups and various charities throughout Northern Virginia while encouraging interest in preserving the great Classic Automobile hobby for future generations.

This will be the 11th consecutive year Cruisin For Heroes has been a part of AirFest affording spectators an opportunity to stroll among their display as an added free family friendly attraction to the show.

The display vehicles are selected each year by the leadership of this patriotic group from their membership list of volunteers who receive a special invitation to participate. This is not a car show and is only attended by a select group of Cruisin For Heroes members. Each owner is available to answer questions and share their hobby with the public.

She smiled as students raced from exhibit to exhibit - piloting robots, using a 3D engraver, trying on suits at Micron and doing something as simple as building paper airplanes.

The joy in the air was palpable.

“I love that they not only get to experience STEM, but it’s all hands on,” Richards-Lutz said. “I love that they can use their creativity. The fifth grade teachers have done a great job preparing them ahead of time.”

Richards-Lutz noted that the whole country is gravitating toward STEM and more children are becoming interested in technology at a younger age. It’s important, she said, to tap into that from an education standpoint.

“The jobs these kids are going to have, they’re going to have creativity and problem solving,” she said. “They are getting skills from things like this that will help them with any career they go into.”

Career Partners helped fund the day while providing volunteers who helped the students navigate the different stations.

“People don’t realize this is here, but the kids are so excited after their two hours here, they do go home and talk about it,” Richards-Lutz said.

“We hope they will bring their par-

ents and siblings back on Saturday.”

Tom Hazel, with the Culpeper Regional Airport, was excited to see the students’ learning at the airport.

“All of these youngsters have a lot of interest, most of them have never seen a collection of all of this in one place,” Hazel said.

“What I enjoy is sharing what I do, I have a riveting class and I enjoy sharing that with the youngsters who have never seen how that actually works,” Hazel said.

Germanna Community College’s Center for Workforce Development helped coordinate the day, introducing the students to drone flying and local businesses like Nextera Energy and Micron.

Micron’s presentation was a popular one because students participated in bunny suit races - learning how to put on all the protective gear the technology company uses. Micron, based in Manassas and in the midst of a $3 billion expansion, had a host of employees working with the students to spread their love of engineering and technology.

Another popular presentation was where electricity comes from and the job of a line worker, presented by Rappahannock Electric Cooperative and Southside Virginia Community College.

Almost every fifth grader said they were looking forward to attending the AirFest Saturday, their interest piqued.

Radio Control flying demonstrations The morning Radio Control (R/C) model aviation portion of the 2019 Culpeper Airfest will again address all aspects of the hobby. The members of several northern Virginia model aircraft clubs will participate in an all day show-and-tell static display of various flyable scale, historic, classic, WWI, WWII, present day, and jet model aircraft.The flying day will start out when the gates open with experienced model aircraft pilots providing hands-on “buddy box” experience of flying fixed wing model aircraft for any of the Airfest guests interested in giving it a try. Interspersed in the first two hours of the “buddy box” operations will be demonstrations of model helicopters, quad-copters, drone racers, and the final Germanna College high school quad-copter challenge race of the season.

For the final hour prior to the start of the afternoon’s full-scale aircraft aerobatic show, there will be a continuous aerobatic demonstrations of large scale model piston and jet aircraft as well as a multiple aircraft 3-D demonstration.

VIEWS Control the Transition – Review your Assets It is amazing what a can of pumpkin, some strawberries, Katherine Charapich LIDL pumpkins, and one cake mix can add up to! Include adult children who love Fall, and the equation equals pumpkin muffins, crustless pumpkin pie, eerie looking strawberries with confectionary eyes gazing through white chocolate masks, and jack-o-lanterns lining the porch steps.

Adding to the festivities was one “very big dog” seemingly so happy with all of the attention that he took to dashing through the house as if a firecracker had been set off . . . onto couches, through the kitchen, back into the living room.

Priceless was the sound of laughter as the season known for its crisp weather, falling leaves, pumpkin spice, and shorter days was given a warm greeting. And, just to be sure that the new season heard our “hello” loud and clear – add in the traveling of country roads in search of apple orchards, coffee infused with hemp milk (who knew?), and a purchase of local honey – the welcome mat is certainly in position.

Many have traditions that they recognize when transitioning between seasons. Not all transitions are offered or are deserving of such celebrations. Some new seasons - whether related to weather, age, relationships, or work, can make one simply want to turn off the alarm, pull the covers back up, and hold out hope for tomorrow.

Beautiful prayer coverage for every season, every life-transition, is found in Ephesians 3:20 (KJV). “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us . . .”

Though not all seasons or life transitions can be predicted, there are some for which we can set forth carefully considered plans.

As an estate planning and elder law attorney, I am witness to so many of my older-adult clients who somehow – gracefully, face the passing of their spouse of many years – often having been married for over five decades. How does a surviving spouse face a day without her beloved, let alone a future?

ESTATE STEWARDSHIP

Many spouses have planned ahead, making the transition as free from worry as possible for the surviving spouse. The following addresses a checklist related to assets that married couples, who want to make sure they have planned ahead for their beloved so that the surviving spouse, upon the death of the firstto-pass, may experience the phases of grief, adjustment, and healing without the burden of worrying about finances, tracking down paperwork, and often learning what may feel to some like a new language – management of assets.

Perhaps one may think of this approach to estate planning as “paying it forward.” Do the hard work now, so that your surviving spouse does not carry the burden. Begin by considering your assets and the assets that you may have at the time of your death.

Those assets may include: real property (real estate – land or land with improvements), tangible personal property (the items you can touch – household goods, jewelry, your stamp collection, a car or boat), and intangible personal property (your cash (checking), savings and wealth management accounts).

Real Property – If your goal is to convey or devise your interest in real property to your wife upon your death, begin by reviewing any and all deeds to real property in which you own interests. If your deed indicates that you hold your real property as tenants by the entirety with rights of survivorship, then by operation of law your wife will become the fee simple owner of that property upon your death.

Best practice would be that your will is submitted for probate without qualification (unless there are other assets that will pass through probate), putting the public on notice that you have died and your wife is now the owner.

You may also hold interest in the real property as joint owners with rights of survivorship. When you die, best practice, just like real property deeded as tenants by the entirety with rights of survivorship, is that your will is submitted for probate without qualification (unless there are other assets that will pass through probate), putting the public on notice that you have died and your wife is now the owner.

Tangible Personal Property – If your goal is to bequeath your

interest in tangible personal property to your wife upon your death, begin by reviewing the titles to vehicles. If a vehicle is owned jointly with rights of survivorship with your wife, upon your death your wife will become the sole owner.

If you find that you own vehicles or any other items of tangible personal property solely in your name and you want those assets passed to your wife upon your death and not during life, you can bequeath the assets through language in your will, fund the assets into your trust and include language in your trust that upon your death the assets pass to your wife, or your wife may be able to use a Virginia Small Estate Affidavit (there are restrictions regarding the use of said Affidavit).

Cash, Savings, and Wealth Management – If your goal is to bequeath your interest in your cash, savings, and wealth management accounts to your wife upon your death, begin by reviewing the last account statements for each. In the event that an account is held jointly with rights of survivorship, then your wife will be the sole owner upon your death. Your wife will need to present the holder or provider of the account with your death certificate.

The season of loss is hardly comparable to transitions between weather seasons where one finds comfort in traditions such as pumpkin carving. A season of loss often comes and interrupts and takes quite a lot of courage to face.

Steven Furtick, Pastor of Elevation Church, has a poignant sermon entitled, “Trapped in Transition.” that in a season of transition don’t let your world be cluttered by tasks, thoughts, and outside forces that are distractions; find comfort in and direction from the One who remains “Standing over your situation presiding, and prevailing.”

The focus of the above is intended to make the transition of a season of loss easier – less encumbered by paperwork and worry for the surviving spouse. Evaluate your assets. Review how your interests are titled. Plan ahead so that your loved one can rest during a season of transition, finding Peace in the One who provides.

When I step outside my hotel on the first day of the Camino, it is rainy, cold, and foggy. I am leaving late — most of the pilgrims have already left — but the rain forces me back into the hotel to put on my rain

gear.

When I finally get out the door, it is 9:00 which is a very late start on the Camino. A few yards from my hotel is a street sign saying “Santiago de Compostela, 790 Kilometers.”

This is the length of my journey (790 kilometers=491 miles). It is an iconic sign. While I stand there, a fellow pilgrim taps on my shoulder. “Would you like me to take a photo?” I hand him my phone. After posing for the photo and thanking the pilgrim, I am off for my first day of walking.

The first day from Roncesvalles is more challenging than usual due to the rain. In good weather, the walk is not so challenging, but in the rain,

the rocks and mud make everything very slippery. I nearly fall several times. An 82 year-old pilgrim I met fell twice, gashing his legs pretty badly. He almost gave up the Camino that day.

Luckily he decided to keep going. He is doing well now and is very happy he didn’t quit. He keeps saying: “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” He lost his wife last year and plans to do a memorial in O’Cebreiro—a mountain village in Galicia where we will be staying in about four weeks.

I sometimes call this first part of the Camino the Hemingway section because Hemingway refers to a few of these towns in his novel The Sun Also Rises. The first major town I reach on this first day is Burguete.

In Hemingway’s novel, Jake and Bill stay in Burguete when they go fishing.

Hemingway visited Burguete several times himself to fish and hunt in the area. The hotel where he stayed has a piano that Hemingway signed when he was there. The piano can still be seen there today.

second day. We walk through a rolling landscape passing old churches, quaint towns, and farmland. I meet two people from Washington DC and we visit a 12th century church together.

This destination today is Pamplona—a city made famous by Hemingway. The St. Fermin festival—when the famous ‘running of the bulls’ takes place—is held every July and draws millions of people.

That night, I have dinner with some fellow pilgrims at the Iruña Cafe where Jake and his friends had many a drink in The Sun Also Rises. I also visit the bull ring which features a large bust of Hemingway at the entrance.

The weather on the next day is also sunny and hot. Today we ascend the Alto de Perdon (Mountain of Forgiveness) where the famous metal statues of ancient and modern

pilgrims can be seen. An inscription there says: “Where the way of the wind crosses the path of the stars.” I make a side trip to the Eunate church—an eight-sided church like the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem.

There is a Camino saying: it takes a week to get your body right, a week to get your mind right, and a week to get your spirit right. The first week is definitely one of muscle soreness and a few blisters. But as I walk, I find myself getting stronger and less concerned about the physical part.

Hopefully my old body will hold up for the next 400 miles!

ARLENE E. BAKER MAY 15,1931 - OCTOBER 2, 2019 Born in Newark NJ. Raised in Elizabeth NJ. Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Artist, Seamstress, Real Estate Agent, Windjammer Girl, Secretary, Bookkeeper, Farm Manager. Our beloved Arlene is now "Over The Rainbow" where she so longed to be where dreams really do come true and blue birds fly. Cherished mother of five children, Arlene and her husband C.E. Myers, purchased and operated the 660 acre Flying M Stock Farm in Orange County, Virginia in 1966 where she was a working farmer and operations manager. She earned her private pilot license at the age of 48. Elected in 1987 to the Orange County Board of Supervisors, she was the first woman ever elected to the County Board. In 1992 Arlene began her new life in Culpeper, Va, where she was a founding member of the Culpeper Arts Group and later, The Artists of Windmore.

While there she honed her talents in Stained Glass, Water Color and theatrical set design and painting.

Arlene is survived by her beloved brother Carl Stolpe(Elaine), of Easton, PA; her children; Dennis Baker(Kim), Richard Baker(Donna), Pam Jackson(Wayne), Allison Harris, and Roxanne Sweeney(Rob); 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Her Life will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2019 at 3pm at the Manassas Seventh-day Adventist Church, 9858 Fairmont Ave., Manassas, VA 22109. In lieu of flowers friends are asked to please consider a donation to be named at the service.
