H E A LT H Pamper Me Pink promotes breast cancer awareness Each October since 2005 Culpeper Medical Center, a facility of Novant Health UVA Health System, and Pepperberries have participated in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by teaming up to host Pamper Me Pink – an event that invites women to come together for an evening of pampering, health education and support. The event also helps raise funds for the Pamper Me Pink Mammography Fund which has raised over $220,000 and provided 600 free mammograms and follow-up imaging services to women and men of financial need within Culpeper and surrounding communities over the last 14 years.

“It’s hard to believe that Pamper Me Pink, an annual event that has grown to over 500 attendees, started in a space above the Pepperberries store with a group pf 25 women,” said Sharon Clark, owner of Pepperberries.

“Since then, Pepperberries and Culpeper Medical Center have been partnering together to provide free mammograms for men and women in our community.”

This year’s event, to be held Tuesday, October 22 at Germanna’s Daniel Technology Center, is an opportunity for women to relax and be pampered with chair massages, hand wax treatments, refreshments, door prizes and entertainment.

But the main focus of the event is health, and attendees will receive valuable information about breast health and hear from a panel discussion with cancer survivors hosted annually by Sharon Clark.

They will also have the opportunity to receive their annual mammogram screenings in a supportive, informative and fun environment. To emphasize the importance of breast health screenings, breast-imaging specialists will provide mammograms onsite during the event. All women are encouraged to participate in these important screenings, particularly those over age 40.

Jonathan Nguyen, MD, a breast-imaging specialist with UVA Radiology Group, explains the importance of mammogram screenings.

“Mammograms are very important, especially as women get older,” said Dr. Nguyen. “We have the technology to detect abnormalities earlier than ever before, often before a woman would notice anything unusual in a self-exam. Through early detection, we can catch cancerous tissue and treat it before it spreads to another part of

This can also result in quicker treatments that have less impact on a woman’s day-to-day.

Someday, we hope to eradicate all forms of breast cancer, but until then we want to do everything we can to treat the disease quickly, successfully and with minimal impact.”

Novant Health UVA Health System offers screening and diagnostic mammograms, as well as 3D mammography. 3D mammography uses an X-ray arm to capture images of breast tissue one-millimeter at a time and allows doctors to see fine details more clearly once the images are pieced together. All mammograms done at Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center are read by UVA fellowship-trained breast radiologists, who are trained to detect small cancers early in their progression.

State Theatre sale imminent?

The State Theatre may have new life.

Late last week, a sign showed up on the front of the venerable downtown building that has had a checkered last few years - indicating the former theater is being split up into suites.

Contacted Monday, local businessman Jim Wells confirmed a group he is involved with is in the process of buying the State Theatre.

“We are purchasing the building and will be breaking the building into manageable sections,” Wells said in an email. “In the back , we are going to have a climbing facility that will be run by Dos Allen. Leslie Maryk will be moving into the building with a fitness studio. In the front, there will be some storefront spaces.”

Wells said the group is looking into offering co-work space and would like to attract a restaurant for the right side of the building.

In June, the theatre was listed for sale for $949,000. No records of it being sold have been registered with the Culpeper County assessor.

In January 2018, the State Theatre was sold at auction to Marcus Silva, President of Villagio Hospitality Group. The final sale price was $726,000, following a 10 percent fee added onto the sale.

At the time, Silva said Villagio, which owns several Northern Virginia businesses including Farm Brew Live, Trattoria Villagio, Little Villagio, The Black Sheep and Two Silos Brewing, planned to use the State Theatre as an entertainment venue, but Silva said it was too early to share their full vision. Since then, the building has seen some activity in terms of construction but for the most part sat silent.

Built in 1934 and originally part of the Pitts chain of theaters across Western Virginia, the State Theatre had a renaissance in 2012 with a $13 million complete renovation and

furnishings/systems upgrade.

Investors from Rappahannock County, identified only as Melbell, LLC., and another unnamed couple have invested $5 million in the 500seat theatre.

Until it closed Sept. 14, 2016, the theatre was led by a volunteer board of directors.

Second public meeting On Chronic Wasting Disease to be held

I am finding that as I have gotten older I have much less time for myself. Between school, work, and other commitments I am left with just a few hours at the end of the day before I go to sleep, and even that is usually taken up by either homework or getting ready for another meeting. It gets very tiring, but I avoid complaining because I know that there are plenty who work harder than I ever will.

Sometimes while I am driving to a meeting or sitting at my desk, I think about what I am doing with my time. There are times when it seems much more appealing to fake being sick or to cancel the meeting scheduled for that night. It is at times like these where you have to know your reason for doing what you are doing. Why do I work: so I can afford an education that will help me pursue any career I would like. Why do I volunteer: to help my community and my country.

It is easy to stay at home and talk about the things you want, but it is only by acting that these things come to fruition. Once you begin there will be times when you want to stop. Always remember your reason.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) confirmed Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) for the first time in Culpeper County in February 2019.

Due to the increased response and support from the first meeting, the Department will hold a second public meeting on Oct. 9, from 7-9 p.m., at Eastern View High School located at 16332 Cyclone Way, Culpeper, VA. In response to the recent detection of CWD in Culpeper County, DGIF has created a Disease Management Area (DMA2) that includes Culpeper, Madison, and Orange counties and variety of regulatory changes have been enacted within DMA2 to minimize the spread of the disease.

Deer feeding is now prohibited year round in DMA2 and whole carcasses (and certain carcass parts) cannot be exported from DMA2.

CWD has been detected in twentysix states and three Canadian provinces. In Virginia, a total of sixty-eight deer have tested positive since 2009. There is no evidence that CWD can be transmitted naturally to humans, livestock, or pets, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advise hunters to test all deer harvested from known CWDpositive areas and to not consume any animals that test positive for the disease.

Saluting Branches honor veterans with tree service

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Sean Harman wanted to honor his father.

The owner of Sean Harman’s Tree Care, LLC did so in the best way he knew how last Wednesday, participating in the fifth annual Saluting Branches at Culpeper National Cemetery.

His father, Capt. Dick Earl Harman, a Vietnam veteran passed away a few years ago from complications from Agent Orange and cancer - and Harman wasn’t able to make his ceremony when he was honored at Arlington National Cemetery.

So on Wednesday, Harman put on his harness, strapped on his helmet, grabbed his saw and went to work in an effort to help honor all of those including his father - interred at national cemeteries across the nation.

“It was just important to me to give back because almost all of my clientele is military,” Harman said.

“That’s what Saluting Branches is about - is to show people about the importance of arborists. We’re very proactive about taking care of the trees and we’re professionally trained about tree health.”

“We’ve had to have a lot of tree companies come in and remove them,” he said. “Funding is always difficult is acquire. It’s nice to have companies like this one to sacrifice their time and come out here and do this for the national cemeteries.

“We’re honored they stepped up, they contacted me a couple of weeks ago and we got put on the list,” Priest said. “This is the first time they’ve been here since I’ve been here, we’re honored to have them.”

Harman said the Emerald Ash Borer is a huge problem for ash trees in the area and it’s important to keep trees trimmed and to remove dead ones to stop infestations. “(There are) huge problems with trimming trees in the middle of summer, they can become infested with borers,” Harman said. “They can destroy thousands of trees.”

Harman is one of just about a dozen certified arborists in Culpeper County, though he mainly works in Northern Virginia.

On Wednesday, the removed dead trees - including one in the cremation area - and trimmed trees in the older section of the cemetery.

Harman climbed a pair of trees down in the older section, using a pulley system to get closer to the dead branches.

“The most important aspect is safety,” Harman said.

Priest said that the ash borer has been a major problem and the cemetery is always looking for donations for new trees to replace the ones that have been lost.

“With the Emerald Ash Borer killing all these trees, it wasn’t planned and (buying new trees) isn’t in the budget,” Priest said. “If someone wants to donate, we have a list of trees that can be donated. We do not plant trees in burial sections anymore but we do have areas we can plant trees.”

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer The Association of Social Work Boards new home is going to be green.

Being built at 17126 Mountain Run Vista Court, the 26,000 square foot building was having solar panels installed last week that will power approximately 50 percent of the complex.

“We started some values that we wanted to incorporate, one of the big ones was sustainability,” Chief Operating Officer Dwight Hymans said. “It ties in very well that we want to be as environmentally friendly as we can be. We want to reduce our carbon footprint as we can, the solar ties into that very well.”

The ASWB now employs 50 and has added room to grow, the new building is designed to old up to 60 staff.

The new building construction started in October 2018 and is expected to be finished later this fall.

“It’s always been a bit of a moving target,” Hymans said.

Last Thursday, Hymans and staff watched as Sun Tribe Solar - based out of Charlottesville - worked to install approximately 600 solar panels. The panels are elevated and based in the parking lot, so they will serve a dual purpose as a cover for vehicles. The panels are fixed - meaning they will not track the sun but they are expected to power a majority of the building.

“Initially we talked about putting a solar array out in the meadow,” Hymans said. “We talked about putting on the building, we finally came up with the idea to have them in the parking lot.

Hymans said the organization has built in other kinds of efficiencies on the electrical side, including an extremely efficient air conditioning system that will feature 88 different HVAC units.

“The nice thing about the HVAC system we are using is that it’s almost as efficient as a geothermal system, but it’s less expensive to install,” Hymans said.

“This also allows us to have individual thermostat control in each office of the building.”

Conduits will run from the three solar arrays and will go directly into a pad on the back of the building.

All of it is shielded from view by a natural tree line and a rolling meadow on the east side of the building. Hyman said protecting the natural view of the area was important.

“We had the building designed and parking lot designed before we came up with the solar,” Hymans said. “It’s turned out to be very advantageous because it’s over our parking lot which is next to the building - so the view from the building is going to be of our meadow area. We’ve got the tree berm on that side so folks on that side won’t be looking at solar panels either. It ended up being a good design.”

The ASWB owns 35 acres - with the property stretching all the way back to Mountain Run. They plan to design walking trails and have already started planting natural Virginia habitat. own 35 acres. ASWB is celebrating its 40th anniversary and 30th year serving Culpeper.

They are heavily involved in community charities.

“We are an association made up of the licensing boards of social work throughout the U.S. and Canada,” Hymans said.

“Our primary services is a licensing exam for social workers. We have a lot of other services we offer now as well.”

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Culpeper welcomed its newest hotel recently, while the owners announced plans to expand to Bealeton in the future.

A ribbon cutting was held Sept. 12 for the Hampton Inn, where Sunset Hotel Group announced that a new Hilton product - Home 2 Suites - will hopefully be open in the Bealeton area next year.

“We have the land done, the franchise approved and we hope to begin next year,” Sunset Hotel Group Chief Operating Officer Lee Keller said.

Sunset Hotel Group owns 11 properties in the region, and reaches into Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Sunset Hotel Group Chief Executive Officer King Patel and Chief Financial Officer Dan Patel and Keller welcomed a group of about 35 dignitaries to the ribbon cutting - for the hotel that opened officially in May. Paige Read, Director of Tourism and Economic Development for the Town of Culpeper, said that tourism in Culpeper is growing and last tourism revenue reached $44.5 million.

“Without partners like we have this morning and our existing partners, Culpeper would be seen a lot more burden on their local tax dollars,” Read said. “It’s wonderful to welcome tourists to our downtown and it makes us all

Keller said Sunset Hotel Group was excited to bring a Hampton Inn to Culpeper. They started working on the project in 2014, took a year to do market research, bought the land at 18411 Gate Road in 2015, started building in 2017 and opened earlier this year.

“This is our first Hilton, we just wanted to go with a quality product,” Keller said. “We’ve done a lot of Holiday Inn stuff. We wanted to kick it up a bit.”

Keller said they are hoping to attract more business travellers with a Hilton product.

“If you want upper echelon, the business traveler, you’re going to do it with Hilton,” Keller said.

This is the first product Sunset Hotel Group has done in the Culpeper area and were encouraged by the early response.

“It’s a good market, there’s a lot of opportunity,” Keller said. “Culpeper has grown faster than most places in Virginia. We’ve already done a couple bus tours and weddings.

“It’s ramped up fairly well, we’ve had all positive comments. I think we made the right decision.”

Need A lift? See 'Jitney' CURTAIN CALLS

If you need a ride, don’t bother calling Yellow Cab, they don’t go to this neighborhood.

Call the jitney station. Someone will holler “Car Service” into the phone, and you just give him your address. And if Turnbo answers the phone, you’d better be ready when he gets there. He won’t wait.

It’s 1977 in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, the same location for most of August Wilson’s American Century Cycle of plays. And while “Jitney” appears eighth in the chronology, it was the first one he wrote. ”Jitney” proved a reliable vehicle, traveling to theatres around the country, even garnering some prestigious awards before Wilson took it in for an overhaul. That 1996 revision finally appeared on Broadway in 2017 and received the Tony for Best Revival, an award that fit nicely beside its Laurence Olivier Award, the Drama Outer Circle, Drama Desk, and Obie Awards. In classic Wilson fashion, the play is dominated by the colorful personalities who work, drink, tell stories, play checkers, bicker, and gossip under the gathering darkness of a conflict that will affect them all. But the play is the players, characters that we get to know and want to know better before it’s all done.

Directed by Ruben SantiagoHudson, “Jitney” is set in a dilapidated neighborhood of families that have called the Hill District “home” for generations. David Gallo’s scene design, large scale magical realism, brings the cab station interior to life, right down to the peeling paint and the old gas can by the wall phone. Large, slightly dingy windows look out on the two sides of this corner business where

And that’s the approaching cloud.

Urban renewal. Tear down the old, built the new, broaden the tax base, upset and unsettle families with no idea of where they will go. But somehow this crisis, though two weeks away, seems remote compared to the immediacy of the lives inside the station.

Becker (Steven Anthony Jones) has found respectability and status.

Having retired from the local mill, he now runs the station where jitneys, those untaxed-because-they-don’tlegally-exist cabs carry the locals on

their errands. He’s the voice of reason, the one the others turn to for a sensible judgment. He also has a son just about to be released from prison for murder.

When Booster (Francois Battiste) comes in to see his father after twenty years, believing himself forgiven by society, he finds himself brutally unforgiven by his father. “Jitney” is full of personal conflicts, none more profound than this deepest of struggles between father and son.

Wilson’s ear for rhythm and genius for dialogue never flag, and while the play is not a comedy, the humor, ➤ See Curtain Calls, Page 9

➤ Curtain Calls, from Page 8 just because people can be so funny, is everywhere. Turnbo (Ray Anthony Thomas) may see himself as the resident sage, but to the others, he’s an incurable gossip. His observations on everyone else accompanied by the remark that he doesn’t get involved always brings a demand that he mind his own business – and a good laugh.

But Turnbo has his dark side and Youngblood (Amari Cheatom) knows how to find it. Something about the young Vietnam vet fries Turnbo’s grits, once to the point of violence.

If Fielding (Anthony Chisholm) can stay sober, Becker might just let him work a little longer, but that’s a big “if.”

They’ve probably all heard the story of the woman he loves who he hasn’t seen in twenty-two years, but even they are surprised to learn that he was once a master tailor. And for Doub, (Keith Randolph Smith) life kind of lost its purpose after the Korean War. He piled bodies six high, came home to drive cabs, and finally learned – and tries

to tell Youngblood – that whether he sends you to war or tears down your neighborhood, “the white man ain’t thinking about you.”

Becker could do without Shealy, (Harvy Blanks) who runs a numbers racket from the jitney station phone.

But nothing slows down the sharpdressed Shealy – except maybe the woman who put a curse on him. And Philmore, (Brian Coats) a doorman at the nearby hotel, only comes in when his old lady throws him out of the house and he needs a ride.

Five of the nine players performed “Jitney” on Broadway, but all are pitch perfect and keep the ensemble running like a well-oiled motor. Jane

Cox’s lighting design delicately sheds the hours from early morning to late evening, and Bill Sims, Jr.’s original music haunts the stage with a touch of blues.

Whether or not the faceless juggernaut that some call progress and others call displacement will prevail is left hanging in the balance between an unexpected twist and the ringing of the wall phone. Dramatic, funny, deeply personal, “Jitney” is an extraordinary ride.

Culpeper Recreation Foundation Inc. funds improvement for Bright Spot Inclusive Playground The Bright Spot Inclusive Playground located at the Culpeper Sports Complex, received a vitality important feature to lessen the intensity of the sun on warm summer days and provide a meeting place for users of the playground.

The Culpeper Recreation Foundation Inc. purchased and donated a 12 foot by 24 foot cabana shelter, to provide shade during family ac-

tivity at the Bright Spot Inclusive Playground.

The shelter features a large space with sitting benches on the north and south sides of the building.

VIEWS Saving the World Can Be Tricky Recent news and debates about climate change spawned a few Marshall Conner thoughts. I’m an independent thinker politically—a strange creature in today’s polarized world. Let me add that people have tried to pin me to a political philosophy and failed miserably. I like it better that way.

I enjoy communicating with everyone and finding common ground in a society subdivided by political parties, class, gender, religion and race.

I worry people, it’s been my talent since middle school.

I asked a few questions this week and I was surprised and slightly encouraged with the opinions that bounced back.

Here are the questions: Can we improve the environment without using it as a political power play?

Can we ALL seek and accept factual data from scientists without bias?

Is it possible for the mass media to report fairly?

Can we seek solutions personally and locally before we try to change a climate?

Can the left stop using environmentalism to gain governmental control?

Can the right grow a heart and see that our environment can be protected and preserved?

Why can’t conservatives incorporate environmentalism into their platform too? Why are they largely hell-bent on either not discussing the issue or denying it?

clean air, waterways, and soil?

Don’t we ALL need to call out the sideshows our government indulges in?

Should countries be prevented from development? Is that fair? Why do select countries get a pass? Who is worthy of clean water? Electricity?

Free Wi-Fi? Craft breweries? Vaccines?

Do you think a dying bee or a malnourished rockfish cares whether you vote Democrat or Republican? I bet they would rather just live, maybe not starve. Omega Protein doesn’t care about exceeding catch quotas of menhaden and Virginia’s state government lets them keep on rolling in the nets.

Fish pills, fertilizer and fish food sure are fun to catch. Future generations would rather catch a rockfish.

How about a few points we can ALL agree on?

Environmentalism should include all--not just liberals. Pro-environment conservatives exist, but are encountered as frequently as the Loch Ness monster, according to my liberal friends.

Science should be believed--but we should verify its findings and results without interference from political, business or government sectors.

Liberals are being driven insane by President Donald J. Trump. One must understand that he is a New Yorker, which makes it tough for lots of people (sorry to the New Yorkers I know and like). We’ve heard it before… with an accent. Everything is the best there... and not here. They are geniuses and tough guys. Their bagels are better, their pizza is the best, they wear big ties and they never wave anything except a finger when driving.

What about Greta Thunberg? She does have a point. Give her some

Greta and the children of the world have many things to be worried about--the environment, economy, the fiscal fantasies of politicians, pollution, leadership of Baby-Boomers, over-harvesting of fish, remakes of classic films, war, famine, religious extremism, clean water, deforestation, mosquitoes, Area 51, and the odd, angry, asteroid of the apocalypse. Cut Greta some slack. No, she doesn’t closely resemble Veruca Salt from Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory—you snarky, non-conforming, libertarian meme artists!

This brings me to civility. We need to hear each other out in a civil manner. There are lots of ignorant people trying to speak for all of us.

Lots of liberals treated me like a captured Bigfoot for saying there are conservatives who want to improve and preserve the natural world. Didn’t conservatives advocate for saving our wildlands in the past?

The press needs to stick to the facts and use a couple named sources to verify all stories. Crazy, right?

The world might survive humanity, maybe it won't. We will have to adapt, work together or perish.

If warming brings the ocean closer to my house will I be able to catch tarpon and bonefish locally?

I want bees, more leaping smallmouth bass and big healthy rockfish.

We might all disagree and never find a solution, or we might be smarter and more effective than Congress or the United Nations. It’s time to grow up and work together again folks.

Together we brought off a fabulous evening of family fun and community unity.

The Culpeper Block Party. Hop N Hog will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29, from Noon to 5 p.m. in the Depot District in Downtown Culpeper. Event attendees can look forward to LIVE Americana Music, the best in regional BBQ, craft beer, Virginia cider, lawn games and fun for families, and an added bonus for wine lovers too with carefully selected wines to enjoy! Entertainment includes LIVE music by two phenomenal bands, A.P. Project and Gold Top County Ramblers. The day’s festivities open with local favorites A.P. Project playing Americana style, classic rock and country. The Gold Top County Ramblers keep the Block Party going with "rockin’ new-age bluegrass". In addition to our musical lineup we’ll have a variety of lawn games with prizes for adults and a kids’ area with moon bounce, face painting, and more.

For the HOP, the festival will serve up Downtown’s very own Far Gohn Brewing Company and Beer Hound Brewery craft beer selections.

A variety of Virginia craft beer including Blue Mountain, Strangeways, and Devil’s Backbone join the line-up, and refreshing Bold Rock Cider in a variety of flavors. As if it couldn't get any better, wine lovers will enjoy a selection of hand-picked wines that make perfect pairings. CRI guarantees there will be plenty of craft beer, wine, and cider to suit anyone’s taste!

Now for the HOG! We have six regional pit masters bringing their A game to the event. Burnt Ends BBQ, Davis Street Pier, Divine Swine BBQ & Deli, Smoked, LLC, Swill and Swine BBQ, and Uncle Elders will each feature their typical delicious menus along with $2 sample serving options.
