Culpeper Car Wash supports local youth

CULPEPER YOUTH SPOTLIGHT

Culpeper Car Wash owners Tom Boyd and Steve Corbin, will donate $2 for every car washed at their car wash this Saturday, June 27 to charity. The Car wash is hosting local group Culpeper Youth, who will have volunteers on hand providing free tire cleaning and dry downs. The donations from Culpeper Car Wash plus cash tips collected by Culpeper Youth will benefit “Teens Dress for Success” an initiative of The Culpeper Crisis Team to provide up to 50 Teens with new school clothing.

"As a locally owned and operated carwash, we take pride in giving back to our community. We support all of our veteran’s, First Responders, Churches, civic groups, and our local 4-H groups. Stern elected as FCCLA National Officer Abigail Stern, a senior at Eastern View High School, was one of 10 national officers elected to serve on the Family, Career and Communities Leaders of Stern America’s (FCCLA) National Executive Council at the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California.

Stern, the daughter of Nicole Stern of Culpeper, will be serving as FCCLA’s Vice President of Membership throughout the 20192020 school year.

As Vice President of Membership, Stern will be a part of efforts on a national level to increase FCCLA membership and make current members more active.

Last week Terry Jackson and I represented Eastern View High School at the 2019 YADAPP (Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project) Conference hosted at Longwood University with Deputy Dana Martz as our adult sponsor. This purpose of this conference is to give students the resources and opportunity to create a year long action plan to be implemented in their communities at the conclusion of the conference. Throughout the week Terry and I attended a variety of workshops, planning sessions, and listened to keynote speakers.

At the different planning sessions throughout the conference we created our event, YPSL (Young People Saving Lives), a day long camp open to teens in our community. We plan to host this event in the Culpeper community in either February or March. The purpose of YPSL is to raise awareness of underage alcohol use, drug abuse, and driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Our event won us a mini grant which is awarded to groups who create an organized and creative event. We will use this grant when hosting our event.

We are thankful for the support provided to us by CAYA (Come As You Are). We enjoyed our week at the conference filled with networking, activities and planning. We are hoping to attend the 2020 YADAPP Conference next year!

Last year, Stern served as Virginia FCCLA Vice President of Programs and said she was excited to now help the organization grow on a national level.

Approximately 8,700 students from across the country attended the 2019 National Leadership Conference earlier this month.

Stern was one of 28 National Officer candidates vying for the 10 council positions and competed in a series of intense interviews, a FCCLA knowledge test, and presented a prepared speech on-stage during the five-day conference. Once the council was selected, they met and determined roles for each member of the group.

“We did a lot of team-building activities and we really got a feel for everyone’s strengths,” Stern said.

“We sat down and went through the selection process and that took about five hours.”

Hooper named to Dean's List at JMU Macy Hooper, of Lignum, has been named to the dean's list at James Madison University for the spring 2019 semester.

Students who earn Hooper dean's list honors must carry at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a GPA of between 3.5 and 3.899. Hooper is majoring in Justice Studies.

Macy is the daughter of Ronnie and Glenn Hooper of Lignum.

Cedar Mtn. Battlefield commemorates 157th anniversary

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Cedar Mountain Battlefield is celebrating its 157th anniversary with a living history weekend Aug. 10-11.

Diane Logan, President of Friends of Cedar Mountain Battlefield, said an initiative to name Cedar Mountain Battlefield and Brandy Station Battlefield a State Park has helped increase interest in the annual anniversary weekend of the bloodiest battle in Culpeper County during the Civil War. “We’ve gotten a lot of attention,” Logan said. “The 10th (Virginia Infantry - a living history unit) has been doing this for about three years and when you are developing special events it takes about three years to really get the word out. We’re very excited this year because we are adding new things.”

She’s extremely excited for the planned torchlight tour the evening of Aug. 10, starting at 8 p.m.

“I describe it as an outdoor historical drama,” Logan said. “You’re kind of taken back into time and led through different vignettes and each vignette will tell a story of what happened here on the battlefield.”

During the Battle of Cedar Mountain, about 3,600 Union and Confederate troops were killed in the battle, which took place on Aug. 9, 1862. Logan said they will host a burial scene, which is always a moving experience.

“It’s so touching because people know men were killed and they know it took days to clear the battlefields, but I don’t think the story of actual battlefield burials has been told,” Logan said. “The impact of such a personal experience that you’re sharing.

This is something that actually happened here on the battlefield. We have a diary that describes the burial of this young man.”

Most of the Union army killed during the battle were buried in the Culpeper National Cemetery while many of the Confederate soldiers were moved to the Fairview Cemetery.

The American Battlefield Preservation Trust has preserved almost 500 acres of the battlefield.

“I was told when I moved to Culpeper this was one of the best kept secrets in the Civil War world,” Logan said. “I think through the 150th and publications such as the Civil War Trust’s magazine we’ve got a lot more interest.”

Logan said that the battle was unique because while many think of Sherman being the first to bring the war to the civilians, it actually occurred during the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Farmers lost all their crops, their livestock and soldiers lived off the land. Logan said the most famous story is of Miss Crittenden refusing

Her house riddled with bullet holes, she watched as a cannonball came through the front door and hit a beam in the home, the deadly projectile coming to a rest at her feet.

One Union soldier returned to the Crittenden home to check on the inhabitants, finding it covered in blood as it served as a Confederate hospital.

“It was just such a horrific description of what happened,” Logan said. “I think the stories are as horrific as we read about in the larger, better known battlefields such as Gettysburg.”

The Battle of Cedar Mountain was also the scene of Stonewall Jackson pulling out his saber, still in its sheath, to rally his troops.

It also became an iconic scene due to how heavily photographed it was.

“This battlefield was one of the first to be photographed as intensely as it was,” Logan said. “It was the first time dead animals were photographed on the battlefield.”

Logan said that the push to name the battlefields a state park will have a small window of opportunity to go before the senate, but cautions it may not get there this year.

Last year the Medicare debate took up the entire focus of the senate, but Logan is hopeful that with the support of other entities the battlefields will

get their moment soon.

“We have very strong support, we just have to get it in that very small window to get it approved,” Logan said. “We’re still very optimistic and we’re still planning different activities and creating opportunities for a state park beyond the reenactments.

“The state park initiative is one of the major reasons we’re seeing a lot more visitation because of people being so interested in having a state park here.”

Logan also pointed out the partnerships the battlefield group is building, mentioning the George Washington Carver School Museum. During the anniversary weekend, the museum will host a special presentation of Their Sacrifice: Our Freedom, an exhibit curated for the Carver 4-County Museum, highlights some of the more than 200 African American men from the counties of Culpeper, Rappahannock, Madison and Orange left their homes to join on the side of the Union during the Civil War. Logan said that if residents want to help support the push for a state park the best way to do so is to volunteer.

“The more we can show the state and demonstrate rich history here in Culpeper and show them we have viable organizations that are here and want to promote that history,” Logan said.

Hemming takes the helm of Culpeper United Methodist Church ➤ New pastor takes over for longtime minister Randy Orndorff, who recently was reassinged to Northern Virginia

By Amy Wagner Contributing writer Pastor John Hemming recently arrived at Culpeper United Methodist Church after seven years pastoring Powhatan United Methodist Church. Arriving from a smaller church, with an average Sunday worship attendance of 220, Hemming is excited about serving at CUMC where the average attendance is well over 300.

With an undergraduate business degree, Hemming left an information technology position in Northern Virginia to attend seminary.

“Day one in the IT field I felt I was nowhere I was meant to be, but I waited it out,” said Hemming admitting he didn’t answer the call to seminary readily. Although, contrary to his IT career Hemming said he knew he was where he wanted to be, and needed to be, day one of being a pastor. Hemming was commissioned in 2008 and in 2012 he was ordained and began serving his first charge, in Powhatan.

Hemming, 42, came to Culpeper with his wife and their three children.

They officially moved into the parsonage, Tuesday, July 9, but Sunday, July 7, was his first at CUMC. According to Hemming, his top priority is to get deeply engaged in CUMC. He describes his preaching style as note free and he readily admits he worked hard to learn that.

“It’s about being conversational,” said Hemming. “I really want people to be engaged with their words and their hearts,” he said.

Hemming likes the feel of Culpeper; a mixture of both small town and rural.

“I want to find out how we, as a church, fit in here and what we can do in the community,” said HemHemming ming. “It is important to figure out how to do less, better; to make the most impact.

This is where I want to lead the congregation.

We want to do a few things excellent.”

No stranger to travel, Hemming’s father was an Army Chaplain so, growing up, the family moved around every two to three years.

Through these travels Hemming learned there were many different ways to do things, an attribute he uses in his work daily.

“I like to work together to make things happen,” he said recently in his office. “I like to bring ideas to the team and see how we can make it happen – teamwork,” said Hemming.

Preaching, teaching, relationship building, and being a father and husband are all things Hemming enjoys.

He also enjoys reading and the outdoors (yearly participant in Tough Mudder since 2016).

Hemming holds family time in highest regard and keeps that time sacred during the week. He is a huge fan of board games and rollercoasters.

Jumping in with both feet and excited about his new church family Hemming is trying to wrap his head around learning to be a lead pastor.

“I haven’t had this opportunity before,” he said. “I am excited to be in this role, working with staff and leadership, to implement ways to build God’s kingdom better.”

H E A LT H Playing It Safe - The 411 on concussions The start of a new school year means a new season for high school and college sports, including football, cheerleading, field hockey, cross country, golf and volleyball. As teams hit the practice fields, it’s a good time to be reminded of one of the common injuries associated with playing a sport: concussions.

Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center who frequently treats sports-related injuries in young athletes. Dr. Harandi and his team see the full gamut of sports injuries at their practice and are well-prepared for varying levels of severity.

“The majority of injuries we see are ligamentous or soft tissue, such as overuse injuries, sprains, strains and contusions. These injuries

usually heal quickly and without lasting impact,” said Dr. Harandi.

“Concussions, however, are a big concern among young athletes and their parents due to their potential for long-term neurological impact.”

Signs of a concussion can include: A history of head injury followed by a headache • Lightheadedness • Dizziness • Fatigue • Difficulty with balance • Sleep problems • Increased anxiety In serious cases, individuals might also lose consciousness, experience seizures or exhibit unusual behavior.

These cases should be evaluated immediately by an athletic trainer or emergency medicine provider and may require a computed tomography (CT) scan.

Since neurologists generally don’t have the availability to assess athletes on a weekly basis, the last decade has seen marked improvements in concussion diagnosis and management among primary care providers. According to Dr. Harandi, primary care sports medicine doctors who are trained in concussion management are much better at treating concussions efficiently and effectively and getting athletes back to play safely.

“Even head injuries that seem minor can lead to ongoing symptoms,

so follow up visits are an important part of concussion management,” said Dr. Harandi. “In the past, doctors diagnosed concussions acutely and recommended taking a week off, but rarely saw the patient again unless there were persistent symptoms.

We now understand that wasn’t an effective way of managing a concussion.”

To return to their sport, an athlete must be symptom free and back to baseline measurements. The athlete gradually increases activity in accordance with a three- to five-day “return to play” protocol. If symptoms are observed during this window, the athlete restarts the process. Doctors caution against sending athletes back into play before they are fully recovered and symptom-free.

Don’t Live in Fear Despite the risk of injury, Dr. Harandi emphasizes the benefits of kids and teenagers participating in sports, including teamwork skills, lessons in sportsmanship and healthier lifestyles. In fact, many doctors encourage kids to be multisport athletes, which helps avoid overuse injuries.

“There is always a risk of injury, but you can’t live in fear,” said Dr. Harandi. “You can do the same amount of damage slipping on ice or tripping on stairs. I would never

discourage athletic activity because of the overall health benefits of exercise.”

Primary care sports medicine providers are trained to recognize even subtle injuries. To offer more comprehensive treatment to patients, many have expanded their training to also include eating disorders and mental health conditions.

You don’t have to agree with her politics to give a smile and a nod to Ann Richards, first woman governor of Texas, pro-choice mother of four, recovered alcoholic and advisor to Democratic politicians all the way to the President. Though she died in 2006, she lives again in this ninetyminute one-woman show written by Holland Taylor.

Politicians and would be runners take note: audiences respond to humor and honesty, but most of all, to the kind authenticity you can’t get from polls and focus groups. If “Ann”, directed by Kristen Van Ginhoven is a reliable source, then Ann Richards had all of those qualities and much more.

Arena presents “Ann” in association with the Dallas Theatre Center, and from the moment she steps out on to the Lone Star stage, we feel right at home at an imaginary Texas college graduation. Jayne Atkinson in the titular role absorbs the warmth of the audience and feeds it right back – in personal anecdotes, self-deprecating humor, motherly advice, and one very risqué joke.

She traces her ascent into politics from housewife and mother to Travis County Commissioner, to State Treasurer, to main speaker at the 1988 DNC, and finally, first woman governor of Texas. And she thrived. “Texas politics is a contact sport” she declares.

But it wouldn’t have happened without the people who loved her staging an intervention on her alcoholism, and

From the graduation address, “Ann” takes us into the Governor’s office for a “day in the life” snapshot of this frank, funny, feisty woman at work. She balances whiny interruptions from one of her grown children with affectionate calls for advice from Bill Clinton.

She takes calls, avoids calls, kicks her high heels off to rest her tired feet and is never less than transparent about her motivations and votes. A capital punishment case is looming large and only she can stop the execution. Why would anyone stop the execution of a punk who raped and murdered a 76-year-old nun?

She explains. This is a boy who was born without a chance. The nuns themselves have forgiven him and beg for his reprieve. Ann Richards looks for the humanity in her decisions first.

Ms. Atkinson is a wonder in this role, and even if she doesn’t convince you to her point of view, she convinces you that this is the way politics should look. Dressed in her signature gleaming white “power” suit and heels, snow white hair neatly coiffed, she radiates the assurance of a woman ➤ See Curtain Calls, Page 11

It’s to be expected that in a city like D.C. (is there any city “like” D.C.?) at a theatre such as Arena, the audience of hip young progressives will be eating out of her hand. They were, of course, “oohing” like a call and response service to anything she said that could be remotely rewired to today’s political scene. And while a few members near me were annoyingly loud about their political fervor, it didn’t detract from the mastery of Ms. Atkinson’s performance, or the fluidity and coherence of the script, with one

exception.

To have her announce to the audience that she has died and reflect on later developments, in my view, revokes the silent contract between audience and stage. She’s alive. We came to see her alive. If what she had to say while she was alive resonates with us today, all the better.

Regardless of whether you sit right, left, in the middle or on the fence, there is a hunger for decency and authenticity from our public servants today. An evening spent with “Ann” won’t solve anything, but it will renew a flicker of hope in humanity.

1926) Eddie Cantor was already an established stage star when his Broadway musicalcomedy "Kid Boots" opened in December of 1923, a smash hit that ran for over a year. Paramount signed Cantor to recreate his role for the cameras where he was paired with rising star and future “It” girl, Clara Bow. Directed by Frank Tuttle, Cantor plays the hapless “Kid Boots” who is rescued from a bully by a handsome young playboy named Tom (Lawrence Gray); in return, Kid agrees to help Tom get a divorce from the gold-digging Carmen Mendoza (Natalie Kingston) who tricked him into marriage. Also on board is beautiful Billie Dove as Tom’s new love interest. Digital presentation, 77 min. The two-reel comedy short “The Way of All Pants”(1927) starring Charley Chase will also be on the program.

For decades only nine minutes of this film, missing most of the first reel, was the only version available on the title.

Club of Culpeper is pleased to present its’ first annual Jr. Open Golf Tournament. The tournament, sponsored by Friends of Youth Golf, is scheduled for Monday, July 29.

Friends of Youth Golf are a group of individuals that wish to inspire and encourage kids of all ages to learn and play the game of golf. The event is for players from 9 to 18 years old. Open to all youth from the surrounding areas, schools, and clubs. The younger group (9-12 years old) division will play 9 holes and the older will play 18 holes.

There will be prizes in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions. Players may use a caddie. The Club will host a pool party for players and families following the tournament and the cost is $25/player.

VIEWS Wild and Free the Way it Should Be A traffic cone, an orange plastic totem of man’s desire for a more Marshall Conner controlled world stands in mute witness to the parking follies of mankind. It bears the scars of wheels and weather.

It stands on the edge of a paved parking lot—the border between man and wild.

Through the center of the cone grows a few tenacious tendrils of crabgrass. Day-by-day these grassy arms inch higher and higher using the cone as a little green house.

Who knew that this bouquet of crabgrass could bring such joy? A marvelous adaptation.

There’s an odd beauty to it—because it serves as a daily metaphor of nature’s refusal to bend to the control of man. I admire the resilience and tenacity of nature— and I’ve always enjoyed the spirit of rebellion.

Sure, crabgrass can be controlled and halted by chemicals—but there’s always that little patch of drier than normal grass or a small crack in the pavement where it can sprout and be reborn.

The growth rate of crabgrass and its little weedy accomplices is legendary, it’s even comical.

During one week of vacation a well-maintained yard can easily slip into green anarchy.

What about dandelions? They are the favorite of my daughter-- those little yellow smiles. These things

These Amazing Citizens are people who go above and beyond making Culpeper better, who work behind the scenes or quietly with no public recognition. We want to recognize and honor these people.

seem to have super regenerative powers and the ability to grow just one half-inch lower than your mower blade.

In the insect world mosquitos rule the humid night, feasting on our cold beer infused blood stream.

Ticks creep up our sweaty calves to more fruitful feeding zones and tiny ants brazenly march across our cabinets avoiding our traps, barriers and potions. Sure, we may ambush a few dozen or crush a couple under a thumb but they return days later.

I once hired a pest control guy, a retired Marine. He said, “Those little sugar ants are like terrorists— you kill them and root out their bases and then they reemerge. I guess that’s why I like fighting them. It was an easy transition to civilian employment.”

It cracks me up sometimes when fish decide to stop biting or games are interrupted by rain—it is nature’s way of saying slow your roll mankind.

Last week while vacationing in Charleston, SC my family visited the South Carolina Aquarium, a true gem.

In between all the wonderful tanks full of interesting fish—my teenage son and I focused on a tank full of juvenile tarpon. In the tank were a collection of other fish including, spot, croakers and mullet.

An aquarium guide noticed us looking at a little tarpon picking on a struggling mullet. We are fishermen so we knew what was about to happen.

The guide tells my son, “The fish here are fed well, they have no need to attack each other.” My son

laughed and said, “Just watch.”

A baby tarpon promptly engulfed the little mullet headfirst. Crunch, crunch, crunch…as it went down.

The little tarpon swam back and forth proudly as a confetto of scales and blood puffed from its gills.

“A tarpon is going to be a tarpon,” my son added.

“I’m going to let the keepers know about its behavior,” she said slightly embarrassed.

On the same trip my family and I kayaked through saltwater estuaries checking out all the wildlife.

As we paddled up a tidal creek, we heard lots of splashing—a pod of dolphins had pinned a school of mullet against an oyster bar. This impact feeding behavior was raw, a bit violent and awesome. It was tails and teeth—flipper was not playing around. This was wildlife— being wild.

My family and I quietly paddled with the tide as the same pod of large dolphins gave us a deep breath of annoyance as they moved past our kayaks. With a few big sighs, they seemed to say, “This is our tidal creek—and you all interrupted a family meal.”

This was beautifully unexpected and that is why nature seldom disappoints.

I salute the unscripted, the unbridled and unmanageable.

Conservationist Aldo Leopold, called it the “fierce green fire” that he saw in the eyes of a dying wolf. It tells us that nature should remain wild and untamed.

Keep reaching for the sun crabgrass.

You see who’s doing incredible things in our community and who may not yet have been recognized for their hard work.

We need to hear from you. The only requirements are that the person nominated is currently working to better Culpeper and is not a member of the Culpeper Police Department. The nominee can be part of an organization or group whose work extends past Culpeper.

Please send your nomination directly to Chief Jenkins (contact information below) and tell him who you want to nominate and why. Nominations are accepted on a continual basis.

Our Command Staff will review the nominations and select one person be recognized at each Combined Neighborhood Watch meeting. These meetings are every other month so we intend to recognize six Amazing Citizens each year.

Pedro Navarrete’s love of food shines through in his cooking.

The owner of Taco VIP has taken his cuisine inside recently, opening Taqueria Casa Frida in May. Located at 701 Dominion Square, in Culpeper, the restaurant was home to Maria Bonita for years before opening as Casa Frida last year. Navarrete and a pair of business partners decided to translate the success of his Taco VIP food truck to a sit downstyle restaurant and kept the name Casa Frida, adding Taqueria to the front for his own flair.

“They came to my taco truck and they said ‘we like your food, do you want to try something different?’” Navarrete said. “I said ‘why not?’ We tried to change the name, but it took more time so I decided to make it like in California, where everywhere you can find a taqueria.”

Those familiar with Taco VIP, which sets up shop down Route 3 in the town of Culpeper and can be seen at Culpeper Renaissance Inc.’s 3rd Thursday concert series, will know the quality of Navarrete’s food. It’s similar with tacos, burritos and quesadillas but features some styles that don’t translate well to a food truck.

“We can do a little more with sauce here, like enchiladas, wet burritos, something different,” he said.

He stresses that Taco VIP isn’t going anywhere, and he gets by with help from his wife Guadalupe Guerrero and his kids.

“It’s all family,” Navarette said. “It’s good, you know. My kids and my wife help so it’s a family busi-

ness. It’s real fun. It’s not as stressful. If you do something I like, it’s fun.”

Taqueria Casa Frida is authentic as it gets, offering a taste of Mexico.

When asked what his favorite thing on the menu is, Navarette answers “everything,” with a laugh.

“We like the tilapia, the mojarra frita, I love it,” Navarette said.

Taqueria Casa Frida is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., but that soon will be expanding.

Navarette said he will soon be offering breakfast at the restaurant and opening at 7 a.m. Breakfast will include huevos rancheros, pancakes, ham and eggs and more.

Taqueria Casa Frida also uses the Door Dash app on android or Apple devices - making it easier to order.

“You don’t have to go outside, you just order it and it’s delivered to you,” Navarette said.

Navarette and his family moved to Culpeper in 2003 from California and opened VIP Tacos in 2017 and they’ve quickly become a hit. It’s Pedro’s passion that shines through, as he quickly gets to work on the grill behind him as soon as a customer pulls up.

“I just like to cook, that’s more important in this kind of business,” Pedro said. Originally from Mexico City, Pedro worked in Mexican Taquerias in California before moving to Culpeper. He’s taken that expertise and the knowledge of the culture to create something truly unique and delicious at Taco VIP and now at Taqueria Casa Frida.

EDITH AYLOR THOMAS Edith Aylor Thomas “Nana”, 101, of Culpeper passed peacefully on Friday, July 12, 2019 at The Culpeper surrounded by the love of three generations of family.

She was born February 21, 1918 to the late Walter and Elizabeth Compton Nichols; she was the youngest of eight children.

Nana’s extraordinary gift was touching the hearts of others and spreading her infectious joy and optimism. Those who were honored to know her will remember her fondly for her fierce determination and independence. Nana lived every day of her life to the fullest and loved sharing life with others. Simply put, Nana brightened the lives of others. Nana cherished time with family, and food was one conduit for her love (and indeed she always had delicious homecooked meals ready).

She spent many hours surrounded by friends playing competitive card games, which she usually won. Nana also had a keen eye for dressing elegantly; this love of hers continued throughout her entire life. She also loved traveling and just in the past five years, traveled with family to New York, California, Hawaii and Florida.

Nana’s kindness extended to her work as well. For over 20 years as a dental assistant, she affectionately held the hands of children to provide safety and comfort.

She was and will continue to be a positive force in all the lives that she touched.

She is survived by her two children, George “Buddy” Marcellus Aylor, Jr. and his wife, Thelma, and Janet Holden and her husband, Francis (Pup); three stepchildren, Jonah Earl Thomas, Phoebe Anne Sorgen, and Sarah Mayhew; six grandchildren, Pamela Eng and her husband Joe, Jill Hinson, Jayne Christian and her husband Jim, Susan Harpine, Valerie Reid and her husband Butch and Johnny Mike Aylor; and eleven great-grandchildren, Tiffany Torres and her husband Jose, Brandon Jenkins, Cole Hinson, Dean Hinson, Hannah Eng, Christina Mathes, Ashton and Caylie Harpine, Trey Reid, and Hayden and John Aylor.
