Snakes Alive slithers into Culpeper

They didn’t bite or squeeze anyone--instead they captured the attention of a receptive audience, while erasing their fears.

Last week, the Culpeper County Library introduced 24 slithery visitors to the Summer Reading series. Ron Cromer’s returned with his Snakes Alive annual program.

Instead backing away from his cast of non-venomous reptiles, the room filled with curious children and parents actually gravitated towards the fork tongue critters.

In fact, during the final presentation, Cromer allowed parents and library helpers to hold the snakes and lizards. The grand finally of the event took place at when it took 10 adults and children to hold Freda, the 15-foot Burmese python. Although based on her size Freda raised a few eyebrows, during her temporary arm held containment, she remained docile while Cromer’s audience petted her.

ing the three-day event, sponsored

by Karen and Paul Laski included: a milk snake, hognose snake, rat snake, Burmese python, corn snake and black snake. After petting Cromer’s snakes, the tone of audience went from anxious to calming. Instead of confronting a slimy, wet creature, the curious onlookers were greeted with a cast of docile, leathery skinned reptiles.

Cromer’s snake program continues to be an instant hit with the public.

“I think it’s great because I think snakes are misunderstood,” Culpeper County Library Youth Services Coordinator Laini Bostian said. “It teaches kids which ones you need to be worried about, and they get a chance to see that they are not gross and all scary. Like he (Cromer) said, they (reptiles) are a part of the ecosystem.”

The predominant venomous snake in the Culpeper area is the copperhead, with rattlesnakes existing in the outside mountainous areas. Cromer added that ➤ See Snakes, Page 3

Video shows harrowing moments during CCSO deadly shooting

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Deputy Kerry Grigsby and Sgt. Rick McKinley only had seconds to react.

The two Culpeper County Sheriff’s Deputies were in pursuit of Eric Wesley Clark, 43, of Culpeper, July 17 when the incident turned deadly.

In video shown to the Culpeper Times by Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins, the deputies acted quickly in having to stop the threat Clark presented.

“I can’t think of a thing I would have done differently in the shoes of either officer,” Jenkins said. “I commend them for their actions and obviously they reverted to their training and experience. It all played a vital role in them being able to survive and come away from the incident unharmed.”

The deadly incident began shortly before 10 p.m. July 17 when the CCSO received a 911 call for a domestic assault at a local residents, and was told the suspect, Clark, had left the residence. Deputies were told to be on the lookout for Clark’s minivan.

At approximately 11 p.m. Grigsby spotted the vehicle near the town of Culpeper on Route 229. He followed the vehicle onto Old Rixeyville Road where he put on his emergency lights.

In the video from Grigsby’s dash cam, the deputy follows the car along Colonel Jameson Blvd. at a normal rate of speed. At one point, a few minutes into the pursuit, Grigsby pulls alongside Clark in an effort to make himself be visible. Clark extends his hand outside of the driver side window, making a gesture that appears to resemble a gun.

Shortly after that, Clark turns left onto Griffinsburg Road, back in the direction of his residence, where Grigsby rams into the minivan sending it spinning.

That’s when the incident turns deadly.

Grigsby can be plainly heard on the dash cam yelling “drop the gun, drop the gun. Put it down now.”

That verbal command is followed by a burst of shots and then Grigsby saying he has the gun and the shell.

Later as, the dash camera continues to roll, Grigsby and McKinley can be heard administering CPR to Clark.

Grigsby can be heard saying he’s OK, following by “I was scared of death for you, that gun was pointed right at you.”

The incident was captured in another angle by Sgt. Chris Hibbs’ dash cam, as he arrived on the scene just seconds after Clark’s vehicle was spun.

clearing the weapon away and then the two deputies attempting to save Clark’s life.

“Our policy manual is similar to most any law enforcement agency,” Jenkins said, explaining the situations in which the CCSO has to use deadly force. “Use of force starts with your physical presence, and verbal commands and it escalates all the way up to deadly force. When faced a force that is likely to cause death or serious bodily injury, the officers are authorized to overcome that danger with the use of deadly force.”

Jenkins commended the deputies for attempting to save the life of the man who just posed a threat to them.

“I think because of their training and professionalism the officers have in their daily mental approach, it makes it not a difficult thing to do,” Jenkins said. “We train very regularly, not just on a firing range but in actual shoot/don’t shoot scenarios to be able to prepare them in that split second situation.”

Jenkins pointed out that the deputies had the information that Clark was armed and dangerous, and he had already committed a violent act earlier in the evening sending the victim to the hospital.

This was the third deadly shooting involving the CCSO in four years, the first coming in 2013 and the other in 2016.

McKinley has 17 years experience and Grigsby seven years, including two on patrol.

Both are now on modified duty until the investigation is complete.

Jenkins praised the firearms training the deputies received, for helping keeping them safe. He mentioned the fact that McKinley had to fire through his windshield, falling back on his training despite having a threat pointing a shotgun at him just over the hood of his cruiser.

“I’m just grateful for the training Bryant Arrington and the firearms instructor group has done here at this office for the last five and a half years,” Jenkins said. “We have a higher standard than anyone in the region for our firearms qualifications. State minimum for anyone is 70 percent, we’ve had 75 percent minimum score for years but we’re increasing it to 80 percent for anyone.”

SWAT officers and school resource officers have to shoot 90 percent of better to hold those positions.

Jenkins gave members of the media an opportunity to view the videos in an effort to quell concerns about use of force by law enforcement. He pointed to the incident in 2016 where Willis Walker Jr., 49, was fatally wounded by a sheriff’s deputy responding to a report that Walker had shot and killed his neighbor and assaulted his estranged wife. In that incident, Jenkins invited the NAACP to view the dash camera footage to show there was no wrongdoing on the part of the sheriff’s office. In the July 17 incident, he wanted to be as transparent as possible to let the public know the deputies involved followed procedure.

According to the VSP, shooting remains under investigation.

Every year, thousands of snakes are needlessly killed due to preconceived notions of whether they are dangerous. Using a powerpoint presentation, and bit of folky hu-

mor, Cromer meticulously focused on snake identification, while cautiously pointing out that all snakes, venomous and non-venomous in the wild should be given their distance and respect.

“When people come up on a snake in the wild or in their yard, they get so scared because they try to tell which ones are venomous,” Cromer said. “They are not too sure and as a result they have a what I call a bad attitude.”

Adamant about safety, both for

the snake and people, Cromer made it clear that all reptiles in the wild should be approached with caution. “Kid’s I have to warn you, do not pick up any snake in the wild,” Cromer said. “If you pick up a wild snake it will not be friendly, it will be scared and it will bite you.”

Cromer’s process for handling snakes takes over a year of constant physical interaction before they are introduced into educational public presentation environment.

Wellspring@Home helps manage patient’s conditions ➤ Wellspring Family Practice melds technology with human interaction

Wellspring Family Practice is making it easier for patients with chronic ailments to manage their conditions from home.

The family practice, which also operates an urgent care facility at 15237 Creativity Drive, has recently partnered with Cloud DX and the Good Samaritan Society, to offer Wellspring@Home – which is a remote patient-monitoring service designed for daily engagement with chronic care patients.

Medical Director Dr. Khalid Athar said the response to the new

program has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Any patient who has chronic medical conditions that need ongoing care and monitoring, we will be able to provide those patients, monitoring at home,” Athar said.

The state of the art technology allows Wellspring to monitor the patient's blood pressure, weight, respiratory rate, temperature, blood sugar levels and oxygen saturations in the comfort of their home.

If inconsistencies are discovered during the daily monitoring, Wellspring will ask the patient to come in for a consultation or send them in for urgent care.

“We can make early interventions to prevent outcomes to keep patients away from unnecessarily going to the emergency room,” Athar said.

“Technology is great, but at the end of the day it’s the human touch,” Athar said. “We are going to have the capability to send a nurse practitioner to the patient if need be. They may not need to come to our clinic, they may just benefit from having a visit from a nurse practitioner. We are going to try to incorporate that into the model.”

Part of the program is providing a method of telemedicine. When a patient leaves Wellspring with the Wellspring@Home kit, they are provided a tablet for face-toface conversations with a medical provider. They are also provided a blood pressure monitor, scale and other instruments to be able to track their condition. The tablet will also be used to help push educational material to the patient, Athar said.

It’s just another way to help provide the patient with more than just a one time visit, Athar said.

The goal of the urgent care is to not only provide 12 hours of service, but to give patients an opportunity provide ongoing care.

“We are a family practice with the option that we offer our patients a walk-in service,” Athar said. “One of the key features that

we have is the urgent care services without any of the urgent care copays or fees.”

If a patient needs financial assistance, Wellspring offers Care Credit, which extends special financing options that customers can’t get using regular credit cards.

Wellspring offers on-site lab, xray, and testing equipment make diagnoses in real time at one location possible.

“We can do just about any and every test in an outpatient setting,” Athar said.

They also now offer ultrasound on site for all patients.

The practice is growing, now having two physicians and six nurse practitioners – allowing Wellspring to see more patients per day and to be open seven days a week.

“Our hope is to not only provide seven days of walk-in urgent care, but to provide seven days of family practice,” Athar said. “You will have the opportunity to schedule an appointment on Saturday or Sunday.”

Wellspring Health Services provides primary care and urgent care health services to patients throughout the Greater Piedmont Region.

“The hope and the expectation is to keep services local,” Athar said. “To keep patients local and to be able to do a good job.”

The process for bringing a YMCA to Culpeper continues with West Fairfax Culpeper Board of Gary Supervisor Gary Deal leading the way.

The native of Culpeper has taken the dream of having a community center with sports programs, a wellness center, an Olympic size swimming pool and a host of amenities into a reality. However, although the interest is higher than ever, the actual approval phase is at least a year into the future.

“It’s a process that we have to go through,” Deal said, stressing these are his personal thoughts and do not represent the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors. “From a support standpoint and a location standpoint we are looking at several sites in Culpeper. We are hoping that

the landowner will contribute the property to use in order to go forward with concept plans that we can take to the board to get approval - starting with the Building and Grounds Committee.”

In order to push the YMCA project forward, Deal and his supporters will need the full Culpeper Board of Supervisor’s support. Along with the Building and Grounds Committee support, cost estimate, and concept, the next step in the path to building a YMCA is the full support of the community. Provided that everyone is on board with the YMCA project, the one of the final phases of the process is taking through a referendum and a vote by the citizens of Culpeper.

“I think we have the support, and I think everybody feels like we need a community center and a pool at this stage,” Deal said.

“There is no place in Culpeper that has a facility that brings people together. If we have people that want to go swimming, a lot of times they go over to the Wharf, in Fauquier.”

While Eastern View High School and Culpeper High School have competitive swim teams, neither has a pool. Both teams have to travel to Warrenton or even ➤ See YMCA, Page 7

Passionate about community youth support, Culpeper Town Council member Jamie Clancey, is thrilled at the concept of introducing a YMCA to her beloved county.

The clinical social worker is supportive of a conversation that involves talking about a YMCA, Boys & Girls Club or subsidizing youths at risk.

“My point of view as a community member and a council woman is that I am totally open towards working with the county to create whatever the end result is,” Clancey said.

Whether it’s swimming or a place to engage in daily exercise, Deal believes that the community deserves to have a community center that is cost effective, and affordable not only for the middle income families and up, but middle income down to lower income as well.

“There are a lot of families that cannot afford $70 dollars a month to be a part of a club or private party,” Deal said. “We need a place where a kid can go and shoot hoops during the day if he or she wants too.”

Most recently, in the hope of a finding a model for a potential Culpeper YMCA, Deal along with several fellow supervisors, toured Fredericksburg area YMCA sites, including the King George Family YMCA. The first impression from visiting King George was gratifying for Deal.

“I was very impressed when we went in there - it was very vibrant,” he said. “They had all the amenities we were looking for.”

Culpeper Mayor Mike Olinger believes due to the growth of the community there is a need for a YMCA - however, he has concerns about funding it.

“I personally don’t have a problem with

the YMCA, but I don’t think it should be taxpayer funded,” Olinger said. “It needs to be funded by a public private partnership with the government and the YMCA. It doesn’t have to be funded by the YMCA - it can be done by another group or at the end of the deal, the YMCA is running it, not the government. It should not be a burden on the taxpayer’s back.”

CEO of the Rappahannock Area Family YMCA Barney Reiley is adamant that Culpeper is on the right path to bringing a YMCA to the community, and using the King George branch as a model. Built in 2006, King George embraced the family oriented institution as a mecca for both youth and senior wellness.

“It has become a focal point of that community, it’s been a huge success, as well as the Caroline branch,” Reiley said. “We think Culpeper is going to be extremely successful, given the size of the community and the supporting areas. We could pull from some of the people in Madison, Fauquier, Orange, Sperryville and Rappahannock County.”

With a population of 18,000 plus, the potential for the YMCA sustaining itself in Culpeper financially could reap health benefits for the entire community.

Provided that a YMCA is built in Culpeper, it could join the Rappahannock branches as the fifth branch. With a history of bringing families together, Reiley believes that a Culpeper YMCA could be perfect recipe for keeping seniors and kids active under the same rooth.

“We offer a wide array of programs for senior citizen and families,” Reiley said.

“We really try to offer a lot of synergy to keep the whole family engaged.

“Whatever Culpeper wants to do, I just want to help them get a YMCA.”

HOME & GARDEN Perplexing pollinators and pickerels As temperatures soared this past week, more butterflies and other pollinators started showing up in my gardens, while tadpoles down at the ponds were developing into froglets.

As I mentioned in my July 14 column (online at rappnews.com/ wildideas), few large butterflies had shown up at that point, although clouds of eastern tiger swallowtails were puddling along Old Hollow Road in the spring. With the native phlox in one of my gardens now fully in bloom, several spicebush swallowtails are now nectaring on them at any given time during the day. They join other pollinators, such as eastern carpenter bees, hummingbird clearwing moths (a hummingbird mimic) and ruby-throated hummingbirds. The hummers have been especially active

in the garden since I moved a hummer feeder there. Eastern tiger swallowtails are still scarce but should be more plentiful here soon.

Meanwhile, the small but lovely blooms of the short-toothed mountain mint in the same garden has attracted other pollinators, including yellow perplexing bumblebees, tiny harlequincolored wasps that I haven’t identified yet, and an even tinier black-andred beetle in the genus Macrosiagon (wedge-shaped beetle).

A lot was also going on with anurans this past week. Down at the trout pond, shortly after the tadpoles of eastern American toads hatched out this spring (see my May 19 column), I noticed some larger tadpoles swimming among them. From their general coloring and timing, I assumed they were the larvae of pickerel frogs (Lithobates palustris).

Last week I found a dead tadpole floating in the pond that had developed all four legs but still had the stubby head and long tail of anuran larvae. It had a pale, indistinct stripe running

This was the first year, in the six I’ve lived here, that I’ve seen amphibian larvae in that pond, let alone juvenile frogs, although eggs have been laid there. I think my landlords’ systematically moving the bass and bream out of the trout pond to the pond next to it has enabled amphibian eggs to finally come to fruition instead of being devoured by those voracious fish.

When I’ve walked around the pond in the last couple of weeks, lots of tiny frogs would jump into the water. In the brief glimpses I got of them, I noticed they had dorsal stripes similar to, but more distinct than, the stripes on the large tadpoles. However, they also looked darker and greener than adult pickerel frogs, and didn’t seem to have the leopard-like spots of the adults.

Checking photos of young pickerels online, I found the stripes and some other markings on them matched up with the tadpoles and frogs at the pond, so I was pretty sure I was seeing pickerels in various stages of development.

On Saturday (July 15), I found a tiny frog hopping around in my yard. This frog also had the dorsal stripes and the same general coloring of the tiny frogs at the pond. Pickerels, like wood frogs, are among frog species that become terrestrial once they transform from tadpoles to fully formed frogs, returning only to breed. I’ve found several in my yard over the years.

Since the tiny frog at my house was on the move and I wanted to get a better look at it and take some photos, I caught it and put it in a sprouting jar. This jar has a plastic mesh lid that allows air in, so it also makes a great temporary bug jar, which is what I use it for. I added a bit of grass and a twig for cover and sprinkled everything with a little water. Then I put the jar in the shade on my deck, among some potted plants, so the frog would feel less exposed. I then left the frog alone for awhile, giving it time to settle down a bit.

HOME & GARDEN removed the jar’s lid, jamming my camera lens into the opening before the frog could hop out. I took some photos that way, and also, from the outside, of the frog clinging to the side of the jar next to the embossed label.

The juxtaposition enabled me to also determine the frog was 1.75 inches long.

I had measured the four-legged tadpole, excluding tail, and it was one inch, so I figured this froglet had only recently left its breeding pool.

Done with the photos, I let the frog out near where I’d found it. Fortunately, it sat unmoving for a few seconds before hopping off, enabling me to get a few more shots before it disappeared in the grass. In checking my references later, I confirmed that the little frog was a pickerel froglet. In observing and photographing it, I had noticed that it did have spots like the adults, but they were dark green against brown. More mature pickerels have brown spots against a light-beige background color.

Now I have shots of pickerel frogs in various stages of development, which will help in identifying them in the future, although that can be tough, sometimes coming down to different mouth shapes. I found a dead tadpole with a different mouth shape when I found the four-legged tadpole, and, judging by the state of development (no legs), I’m guessing it is a green frog (Lithobates clamitans), which usually starts breeding at the ponds right after the pickerels.

So what happened to the toad tadpoles, which had disappeared from the pond edge a couple of weeks after they hatched out? My landlord thought he’d seen toadlets jumping around when he was trimming around the pond, but so far I haven’t seen any. David Stubbs is one of those “one of a kind” triathletes that loves to tell you his back story and explain that without his family and faith he would not have the success that he has had in triathlon racing.

When you ask him how he got started competing in triathlons, you don’t get the glorious sportsman's answer.

Instead, he bluntly answers that nine years and ninety pounds ago, he was sitting on his front porch after work in Culpeper, smoking a Camel, as in cigarette, when Rebekah, as in wife, told him that was his last cigarette, as in “you need to shape up!”

That was the beginning for David.

He saw an ad in the local newspaper for the Culpeper Triathlon, and decided that was probably for him.

So he signed up and proceeded to the local gym to get in shape, and give swimming a try, and the rest

is history.

Well, almost.

Being a ranked, national competitor requires plenty of training, and this past March during a normal bike ride, he crashed, as in off the road crashed, as in his front wheel came apart at forty miles per hour.

A barbed wire fence, two fence posts and one tree later, and David was left seriously injured, as in a serious concussion, lacerations, and four fractured vertebrae.

What seemed like a disaster in March for his wife and family, now David talks about Rebekah and his family's faith and support for his recovery and re-entry into triathlon racing, as in he just finished third overall in his first international distance triathlon, since the injuries, in Jamestown.

Secrets of Centenarians

Living to be 100 years old was once considered a rare occurrence, but with advancements in medicine and lifestyle changes, attaining that age is not so improbable today.

There are more centenarians than ever before.

The latest statistics from 2013 show the average US life expectancy is 78+ years, with more than 70,000 Americans having reached their 100th birthdays and beyond. Worldwide, there are over 450,000 individuals over 100.

The US has the largest known number of centenarians of any nation, and the number nearly doubled during the period from 1983-2013. US Census Bureau predicts that the centenarian population will at least double again by 2020. l Over 25% of centenarians live alone l They are the fastest-growing segment of the population l Females outnumber males l The oldest living person on record was 122 when she died (she attributed her longevity to port wine, olive oil, and a sense of humor) l Centenarians are a diverse group with varied backgrounds, incomes, occupations, and a common belief that hard work is important to health l Most centenarians have a strong sense of individualism and self, and an ability to cope effectively with losses.

Fauquier Hospital has become like family I moved to Fauquier County in 2016 from New Jersey to help my aging mother. This was a huge transition for me; I felt very alone in this new environment. I became ill last December and within the last three months, my illness has progressed rapidly.

From the onset of my illness, I have been under the treatment of Dr. Paul Arnold, gastroenterologist and Melissa Nemith, NP, of Gastroenterology Associates in Warrenton. Dr. Arnold and Ms. Nemith have been so important to me. They have treated me like a family member. Dr. Arnold has never given up

Sardinia, Italy: Centenarians in Sardinia state that family is the most important thing in the world. Unlike the US where seniors tend to live apart from their children and grandchildren, Sardinian elders live with relatives until they die. Sardinia has some of the oldest people on earth, and Sardinians feel a sense of duty, community, and genuine affection for their elders. Living the Mediterranean lifestyle and eating a Mediterranean diet may be reasons for Sardinians’ longevity. They also drink goat’s milk (high in anti-inflammatory components), walk everywhere, drink wine every day and laugh a lot.

Okinawa, Japan: Okinawans tend to eat a lot of vegetables, remain lean throughout their lives, and possess a strong ancestral connection. They visit with friends or family each afternoon, are avid gardeners, and receive lots of vitamin D from sunshine. They commonly say “Hara Hachi Bu” before each meal (“eat until you are 80% full”). They believe that living a long life comes from not worrying so much about yourself but by taking care of others and having a sense of purpose.

Okinawans have both genetic and nongenetic longevity advantages – the best combination.

Loma Linda, CA Adventists: Adventists follow a faith that discourages smoking, drinking alcohol, consumption of meat, caffeinated drinks, some spices and condiments, and eating foods deemed by the Bible as being “unclean”. Male Adventists who are vegetarians live 9.5 years longer than the average Californian male, and females live 6.1 years longer. They devote a day for the Sabbath, maintain a

healthy body weight, engage in regular, moderate exercise, spend time with like-minded friends, eat nuts, eat a light, early dinner, and drink 5-6 glasses of water per day.

Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica: Costa Rica spends only a fraction of what the US does on health care and yet its citizens live longer, healthier lives than those living in other developed nations.

The people of the Nicoya Peninsula are active, believe in God, have a strong work ethic, have a strong sense of service to others especially family, possess a strong sense of purpose, eat a large breakfast, moderate lunch, and small dinner; drink coffee with raw sugar cane; eat a diet mostly of corn, beans, pork, fresh veggies and fruit, mostly grown in their yards.

Ikaria, Greece: A typical day for an Ikarian consists of waking up late, working in the garden, eating a late lunch, taking a nap, and getting together with neighbors to drink wine or tea. The evening is completed by a light dinner and getting plenty of sleep. Ikarians get together for many holidays and pool their money for food and wine. They also drink goat’s milk, engage in an active lifestyle, drink herbal tea, fast occasionally, and make family and friends a priority. They eat six times more beans than the average American, eat fish twice a week and meat only 5 or 6 times a month. They drink up to six cups of coffee and four glasses of wine a day.

Although it is difficult to change our lifestyles once we are older, it is interesting to consider adopting one or more of these centenarians’ “secrets” for ourselves.

When Dr. Arnold told me that he felt I needed to transfer to a more specialized GI physician for treatment, I asked him if I could still call him. Dr. Arnold told me I could always call him. That meant so much to me.

I have always been an athlete, like my brother David. They have been like my football team since I got sick. They’re my team.

I have been admitted to Fauquier Hospital multiple times for my illness.

The nurses here all must have families and problems of their own, but you would never know it because they work so hard for you. This is the first hospital I’ve ever been to where everyone -- the doctors, nurses, food servers and housekeepers -- treat you like family.

I don’t know where I would be today if it wasn’t for Fauquier Hospital and Dr. Arnold. My move from New Jersey has turned out to be a blessing. If I was going to be sick, this was where I needed to be.

You cannot put a price tag on the staff here …. on what they have done for me. I’ll never forget them. They jump to help me, even in the middle of the night. Every single one of them has been awesome.

I also want to make sure that people who helped me outside the hospital Rick Clark, Cathy Davis, Vicky Bloom and her husband - know how much I appreciates all the help and support they provided during my illness.

The bus will proceed to and turn left on Reva Road resuming student pickups on Oak Drive and Little Oak Drive, back to James Monroe Highway. The bus will then turn right onto James Monroe Highway and right on Reva Road and continue straight resuming student pickups on Hudson Mill Road. The bus will turn right onto North Merrimac Road and continue picking up students on North Merrimac Road (including Over Street, Glendale Circle, Crestview Place, and Heritage Drive). The bus will turn right on Piedmont Springs Road picking up students to James Monroe Highway. Students living on Winterwood Court and Fernwood Court must meet the bus at Piedmont Springs Road. The bus will then turn right onto James Monroe Highway, proceed to the crossover and return back on the Northbound lane to North Merrimac Road and turn left.

The bus will resume student pickups on North Merrimac (including Lewis Drive) to a right turn on Lakemont Drive. Continue student pickups to Mountain Run Lake Road. The bus will then turn right on Mountain Run Lake Road and proceed to A.G. Richardson Elementary School with no pickups on Mountain Run Lake Road.

The bus will return back to Old Stillhouse Road, turn left and resume pickups on Old Stillhouse Road to a right onto Hazeland Lane to the turn around, picking up students on the return trip. The bus will turn right onto Old Stillhouse Road and continue picking up students until turning left on Sperryville Pike. The

The bus will turn left onto Sperryville Pike and resume picking up students on both sides of Sperryville Pike, including Lane’s Farm Lane, to Scotts Street. Turn right on Rixeyville Road and then right again on Berkshire Drive and resume picking up students.

Turn left on Southampton Drive and then left on Stratford Drive. Turn right on Fairbourne Drive to Colvin Road. Breakfast: It’s what’s for dinner!

The best dinner is often a breakfast. The image of pancakes, waffles, or omelettes on Jim Hollingshead the dinner table is usually tied closely to warm family memories.

My wife and I frequently indulge in this tradition, and will pass it down to our children. I, being the Wine Nerd that I am, can rarely pass up the opportunity to pair a wine with a food that is unusual or odd. As I am neither an alcoholic nor a playboy millionaire, I (like most human beings) don’t often pair wines with my breakfasts.

The results of such experiments have included some of the most memorable meals.

THE WINE NERD

Pancakes, Eggs, & Bacon: Sauternes The pairing that sparked my passion for pairing wines and breakfast foods was almost an accident.

Hot pancakes, scrambled eggs with cream cheese, and crispy bacon sat on the messy dinner table next to some groceries. In poking out of one of the bags was a small bottle of an inexpensive Sauternes that I had wanted to try(we can’t all afford Chateau d’Yquem…). I opened it on a whim, wondering how it would compliment the food. The end result: I skipped the maple syrup. The sweet, honeyed fruits of the dessert wine blended perfectly with the food, with enough sugar to make the meal itself seem to be a dessert. It was a thoroughly memorable meal.

Stuffed French Toast: Belgian Tripel Yes, yes, I know I usually talk about wine. I do, however, love excellent beer as well. Last year, I made french toast, and stuffed it with a concoction of cream cheese, dark chocolate, and raspberry jam.

Thinking of the Pancakes-and-Sauternes incident, I lamented that I didn’t have a dessert wine handy.

It proved to be fortunate, however, because I had a Belgian-styled Tripel instead. (For you beer geeks: it was the Golden Monkey, from Victory.) Lighter in color, smooth in texture, and rich in alcohol, golden

fruits and spices, the beer paired masterfully. This time, the sweetness of the food made the spice of the beer stand out in sharp contrast. It was a pairing that any wine lover would be unable to resist.

Loaded Waffles: Off-Dry Riesling Waffles, while delicious in their own right, can be used as a blank canvas for your palate. Fruits, preserves, and even ice cream can be used to add a plethora of flavors, from peaches and apricots to raspberries and blueberries. While individual waffles may have their perfect partner, there is one wine that I’ve found works wonderfully with any waffle on your plate: Riesling. Whether it’s from Germany or Washington State, a riesling with enough sugar to be a bit juicy(but not sweet; the fruit and syrup will take care of that) will work wonders across the board. Flavors of ripe apples and golden fruits will dance with the pastry no matter the flavors.

Eggs Benedict: Blanquette de Limoux Eggs are notoriously hard to pair a wine with.

Add hollandaise sauce to the mix, and you’ve got an even harder problem. When pairing with anything creamy, however, bubbles are your “get out of jail free” card. Bubbles cleanse your palate, removing that heavy creaminess, so you can experience that lovely first bite time and time again. I tend to like a softer, gentler bubbly with my Benedict, preferably with some Chenin Blanc in the blend. Limoux, in southern France, is one of my favorite locations for sparkling wine(called Blanquette de Limoux) for that very reason. Soft, supple texture, creamy bubbles, nutmeg, and oh, so much butter make brunch stand out it a way you won’t forget.

Of course, you could also always make a mimosa.

The business, owned by Rick and Sandy Combs, has become a mainstay of the community, supporting non profits and always giving back.
