Staying safe while beating the heat Sweet, sweet summertime.

Vacations, pool parties, grilling out and general time outside — what’s not to like, right? Well, as the saying goes, “it’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.”

Nael Hasan, MD, an emergency medicine provider at Culpeper Medical Center, a Novant Health UVA Health System facility, discusses some of the injuries emergency departments commonly see during the summer months and tips for preventing them.

Sports Injuries No kid wants to be stuck in a cast in the summer heat, but according to Dr. Hasan, some of the most frequently treated summer injuries are for kids who have had sports-related accidents.

Kids and families are outside riding bikes, skateboards and hoverboards and those who aren’t paying attention, or are riding without protective gear, put themselves at high risk for accidents and injuries.

“We tend to treat more broken bones, contusions and head injuries in the summer,” said Dr. Hasan. “These can be avoided by wearing helmets and knee/elbow pads, obeying the rules of the road and being aware of your surroundings.”

Heat-related Illness Speaking of being aware of your environment, check the forecast before heading outside. Heat waves put emergency departments on high alert for an uptick in heat-related illnesses, from cases of mild dehydration to lifethreatening heat stroke.

“Intense physical activity in extreme temperatures of 90-plus degrees can be very dangerous,” said Dr. Hasan. “We advise exercisers to get outside early in the day and increase intake of water and electrolyte replacement fluids. It’s important to listen to your body, too. Nausea, headaches, dizziness and cramping are

all signs that you should slow down or stop.”

In some instances, heat exhaustion and dehydration can warrant visits to the emergency room. Heat strokes, however, always require immediate medical attention. Signs of heat stroke include vomiting, confusion, hallucinations and gait imbalance.

Burns Fireworks and grilling out are fun ways to celebrate Independence Day. Unfortunately, unsafe behaviors also make them two of the biggest causes of emergency room visits for burn treatment.

“Unfortunately, we usually see a few cases of children with burns due to people setting off fireworks and sparklers in their backyards to celebrate the Fourth of July,” said Dr. Hasan. “It’s also a big holiday

for grilling, so we also treat injuries from improper grill use or accidental contact with the hot surface.”

For your safety, and the safety of others, neither fireworks nor grills should be used under the influence of alcohol.

Water-Related Injuries Dr. Hasan also advises avoiding alcohol around water.

Though he says drowning incidents are relatively infrequent, being near the water in an intoxicated or drowsy state puts people at higher risk for drowning or other injuries. Boats, jet skis, water skis or other water-sport equipment should never be operated after you’ve been drinking.

The old folk wisdom that says, “don’t swim for 30 minutes after

you eat,” isn’t entirely factual. Light snacking before diving in is generally well tolerated, Dr. Hasan confirmed, but large, heavy meals that could cause cramping or drowsiness should be avoided or given plenty of time to digest.

Summer is a fun time of year in many ways, but also comes with its share of risks — whether from heat or human error. Spend more time enjoying the season and less time in the emergency room by making safety and preparedness a priority this summer.

CCPS extends contract of Superintendent Brads On Monday, at their regularly scheduled meeting, the Culpeper County School Board announced the reappointment of Dr. Anthony S. Brads as its Superintendent of Schools.

Members of the School Board, with the Superintendent's concurrence, voted to terminate the Superintendent's current contract ending June 30, 2021, and extend Dr. Brads' appointment, as Superintendent, to a new four year contract beginning July 1, 2019 and ending June 30, 2023.

Dr. Brads' budgeted annual salary will be $183,224.00 pursuant to the approved School Board budget.

In addition, the School Board will continue to provide a contribution to a tax deferred annuity and a vehicle allowance. Earned regular employee benefits, as specified in the agreement, will remain the same. Prior to Monday's action on the Superintendent's new agreement, Dr. Brads’ current contract ran through June 30, 2021.

School Board Chair, Pat Baker (East Fairfax) stated that "The Board continues to be very pleased with Dr. Brads' leadership and wanted to ensure the continuation of the relationship."

Additionally, “Dr. Brads built a respectful and supportive relationship with our County Officials providing the vision and impetus for a CTE facility to serve our students and the community."

Also, "Dr. Brads uses his experience and leadership ability, relative to budget development and implementation, to benefit teachers, staff and students. Dr. Brads continues to keep our students in the forefront of all decisions from school safety, technology, and Higher Education possibilities to 21st Century work force skills." “Dr. Brads is one of the most experienced superintendents in the Commonwealth, and this Board feels very fortunate to be able to say he is our Superintendent of Schools."

Gelbert named new principal at Emerald Hill Elementary school Culpeper County Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Tori Gelbert as the new principal at Emerald Hill Elementary School. Tori has been working for Madison County Public Schools for the past eight years.

She started as a 5th grade teacher and also taught for a year as a middle school STEM teacher. She was promoted to the Assistant Principal at William Wetsel Middle School where she worked for two years before moving to Waverly Yowell Elementary School where she has been for the last two years.

Ms. Gelbert is a graduate of Longwood University where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She later attended James Madison University for her Master of Education in Education Leadership. Currently, she is working on her Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction through the University of South Carolina.

Averett University and LifeSpire of Virginia launched the first-ever educational partnership for LifeSpire in a ceremony June 7 at Lakewood, a LifeSpire of Virginia continuing care retirement community in Richmond’s west end.

Averett University President Tiffany Franks and LifeSpire of Virginia’s President and CEO Jonathan Cook signed an agreement that includes a three-pronged partnership between the school and LifeSpire’s four continuing care retirement communities.

The partnership allows employees of LifeSpire to earn their degree at Averett with scholarships awarded by Averett, LifeSpire residents to attend collegelevel lectures right where they live and Averett students to serve as interns at LifeSpire.

Cook praised the agreement as a step forward in positioning LifeSpire communities as employers of choice across Virginia.

“We are excited to partner with Averett to offer these opportunities,” Cook said. “Averett prepares their students to make a difference in the world. LifeSpire helps team members achieve their full potential and believes that providing educational opportunities is a key piece of that process.”

Franks agreed, “LifeSpire and Averett University both value and encourage lifelong learning, a commitment to intellectual growth throughout one’s entire lifetime. We hope that LifeSpire employees and its residents will be excited about the opportunity to become a part of the Averett University family.”

The partnership builds on the organizations’ shared mission and values as members of the Baptist General Association of Virginia.

LifeSpire employees automatically qualify for Averett scholarships once they meet admissions criteria. For each undergraduate course taken, Averett will award a $250 scholarship and a $350 scholarship for each graduate course taken.

In addition, Averett will offer residents of LifeSpire communities the option of attending Averett University lectures and courses at home – right in their own community – beginning at Lakewood and expanding to LifeSpire’s other communities in Culpeper, Daleville, and Newport News. The program will launch in the fall 2019 and LifeSpire residents will be able to choose from classes in religion, communications and criminal justice/ sociology.

Averett students will also benefit directly from this partnership, with opportunities to intern at LifeSpire in the areas of business, communications and accounting.

LOCAL NEWS Caregivers workshop fills a void in Culpeper ➤ Pat Bankhead saw the need while taking care of her late husband

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Pat Bankhead felt helpless.

Last fall, the Culpeper native was taking care of her late husband Walter Erksine Bankhead and she felt despair.

She was serving as a caregiver for her ill husband and she didn’t know where to turn. So, she turned to the Lord and her church.

A visit to Culpeper Presbyterian Interim Pastor Chris Shearer revealed a void in Culpeper - there were no support groups for caregivers.

It was a conversation that led to a

Caregivers Workshop being presented at the church June 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, to give caregivers information on how to deal with the difficulties they face and show them there are others that are dealing with the same struggles.

Shearer said that there are a growing number of spouses, children, aunts, uncles and more who are having to serve as in home caregivers as we face the growing number of aging baby boomers.

“Not just here, but nationwide,” Shearer said. “It’s somewhat of an unaddressed need at the life of the church at large. Pat is not the only one at our church. It’s meeting a real need. The beauty of this to me is that this is meeting a real need identified

by Pat, now we get to figure out how to address it.”

However, by 2015 his health was in decline and Pat became his primary caregiver.

“It was a deteriorating situation as my husband hand neuropathy from diabetes in both legs, he lost balance and feeling in both his legs,” Bankhead said.

A gallbladder surgery in 2016 started his decline and for more than two years he suffered through numerous illnesses - including a bout with Bell’s Palsy that was undiagnosed for months, leaving his family grasping for straws at what was causing their husband and father pain.

Despite having family, workers and the church to help, Pat said it was a daunting task to take care of her hus-

band.

“As we got towards the end, I was fortunate enough to get a caregiver from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” Bankhead said.

“But then from 2 on, I was alone with him. As time went on, it got harder and harder.

“As I got toward the end, he developed Bell’s Palsy toward the end. I got so frustrated because I couldn’t help this man. Those were the times that you just ….” she said trailing off.

She said conversations with the Lord helped her come to the realization that it wasn’t just her that was having these same frustrations, and she realized that others in the community may benefit from a support group.

“I said Lord I can’t do this anymore, the next thing I knew, I just felt this peace and calm and I knew I could do this,” Bankhead said. “When you feel ➤ See Caregivers, Page 5

That’s why it’s so important a support group comes along that is there for you that gives the caregiver time to get away, take a deep breath and regain their strength.”

After a visit with Shearer, she and Karen Gregg, Culpeper Presbyterian Church’s Director of Christian Development, started to search for a caregivers’ support group. It didn’t exist.

They reached out to Carol Simpson, of Aging Together, and began the conversation about starting one.

“Carol offered to help in any way she could, we determined we needed a trained facilitator to lead something like that,” Gregg said.

The seminar on June 27 is a start in that direction, as they’ve partnered with other local churches to help find qualified individuals to talk about the situations caregivers may face. They hope that the seminar will lead to a support group.

The seminar will feature Willi Dalaba, LCSW, a member of Culpeper United Methodist Church, who will discuss “Balancing Care: Yours and Theirs.”

That aspect was difficult for Pat. “I dropped all outside activities, the only thing I did was come to church,” Bankhead said. “Your total focus is on your patient.”

The talk will culminate with Simpson’s presentation on community resources for caregivers.

Pat is hoping the seminar will provide other caregivers with the peace she was searching for.

The church and the connections she’s made with them have strengthened her, she said.

“I have been amazed and blessed that they were right there,” Bankhead said. “It’s like God meant these things to be. People want to look out for each other and people need that love and compassion.

“They (caregivers) need to know someone is out there for them to support them,” Bankhead said.

“Our population is aging and one of the things we hope will be hopeful with this workshop is to present some materials for the range of care that are available,” Gregg said. “At what point do you say I can’t handle this anymore and I need a facility. For some this may just be an information piece to let them know they aren’t the only ones dealing with this.”

PRACEP honors 13 students who completed GED ➤ Plugged In Virginia honored another five participants who finished para educator program

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Mel Miller felt held captive by the fact he didn’t have his high school diploma.

As of May 22, he’s a free and happy man.

Miller was one of 13 students to receive their General Education Development degree through the Piedmont Regional Adult and Career Education Programs May 22.

Miller said that it was missions trips with McLean Bible Church that helped push him to earn his degree.

He left school when he was 14, and he promised his parents he would get his GED - but he never did. He had a 20 year career as a salesman, but “I carefully hid that I didn’t have my diploma. I

always felt like I was held captive by the fact I didn’t have my diploma.”

It was on a mission trip to Haiti that he first encountered special needs children - he felt ashamed and kept away from him but on a later trip he encountered more and found he had a heart for helping them. It was on a recent trip to Kenya last fall that he felt a calling in his heart to go get his degree.

“These kids fought and scrapped for every bit of education they could get,” Miller said.

“I’m sitting there and I threw away my education. That’s where I made the decision that I have to come home and get my education.”

He came home and started making calls - Ginger Hilleary, Regional Program Manager for PRACEP took his call and welcomed him in. He began taking courses through PRACEP and on May 22 was able to hold his head up high.

“I feel the Lord placed the calling to work with special needs kids in my heart,” Miller said.

Amanda Fetzer, an AmeriCorps Member, also received her GED that day and praised the organization for supporting her.

“I have gotten to explore different parts of Virginia with them,” Fetzer said. “This past year with AmeriCorps has opened a lot of

doors for me. I’m just so grateful and blessed that I pushed myself to get my GED to do this.”

Last year’s graduation ceremony featured 30 graduates - but that encompassed a three-year period. This year, 14 graduates walked in one calendar year. ➤ See PRACEP, Page 14

Know Your State and Your Vote’s Weight: Ways to Support Candidates VOTER'S GUIDE

In many districts across the state, voters turned out on Tuesday and made their choices for who would represent their party in November’s election. The remaining candidates are in need of more than just votes in November. They need voters’ attention and support now.

In this month’s edition of Know Your State and Your Vote’s Weight, readers can learn about the ways they can get involved and support their candidates for state and local office.

Find Candidates Culpeper County is part of three state senate districts and two house of delegate districts. If a voter is unsure of which state senate and house of delegates districts are theirs, all they need to do is type their address into https://whosmy. virginiageneralassembly.gov/ to find

out about both of these districts. To find out which district a voter is in for the board of supervisors, they can contact Kim Ellis at (540) 727-3427 ext. 108. Once citizens know which races pertain to them, they can choose their candidates and get to work helping those campaigns.

Raise Funds and Make Donations From the school board to the state senate, all candidates need money to run their campaigns. Their budgets help cover needs such as paid staff, offices, pamphlets, yard signs, advertising, and much more.

Candidates are accepting donations from citizens, but there are other ways to help them raise money. Voters can reach out to their candidates to see if they would like to do a meetand-greet fundraiser at a private residence. They can also check with the local Democratic or Republican committee to see if there are upcoming events or ongoing efforts to help their candidates. Some positions, such as members of the school board, must run as independents. Howerer,

both parties have declared candidates for most positions that can have a political affiliation.

Volunteer Having energized volunteers on the ground in the community can be a huge help. Canvassing is Knocking on doors to tell others about who the canvasser is voting for and why. This can be highly effective in gaining support. Both the campaigns themselves and their respective local committees are likely to have many volunteering opportunities in the coming months.Projects, such as postcard writing or making phone calls can also be effective. All of these efforts can be a great way to get more volunteers and establish a more widespread network.

Spread the Word Even just showing one’s support for a candidate can help inform others. This is especially important for candidates running against an established official up for reelection. It shows that there is, in fact, support for the underdog. Yard

signs, buttons, bumper stickers are great advertising tools. Sharing on social media can also help increase visibility for one’s candidate. This is not meant to encourage fights over social media. Sharing a position a candidate has on one or more issues and what the poster thinks about its importance can carry much more weight than name-calling and making generalizations across party lines.

This is what has the potential to sway undecided voters.

Vote Ultimately, the biggest way to show support for a candidate is by voting. Whether a citizen votes absentee or in person on election day, no amount of campaigning or volunteering carries the same weight as a ballot cast for their chosen candidates.

Now that the hotel is up and running, Derflinger expects that they will have no problem bringing in customers because of loyalty to the brand.

Indeed, Hilton honors program members receive impressive deals, and there are different levels of membership: member, silver, gold, and diamond. Derflinger talked about the special benefits that come with being a diamond member.

“They get all sorts of bonuses staying at these properties,” Derflinger said. Because of these perks, more and more people may decide to stay in Culpeper, even if it’s a little further of a drive.

“They will come this far to be able to get their points,” Deflinger said.

The arrival of the new hotel will boost tourism in Culpeper as well, according to Deflinger. In fact, some guests at the Hampton Inn have al-

His longtime friend John Harrison recalled his ability to solve seemingly every problem, telling of a time that Harrison complained about how much it cost to open and close his pool. Price came to the rescue and closed it that year and then came out to open it the following year.

“Our first wedding group was a group from the Netherlands,” Deflinger said, “they absolutely loved old town Culpeper.” Deflinger talked about how Hampton Inn will be working with businesses in Culpeper to boost tourism even more.

“We're going to be working with the local community to get some locally negotiated rates with companies here,” Deflinger said. Other than tourism, the new hotel may also lead to even more business, especially on the outskirts of Culpeper.

When asked if the new Hampton Inn will increase business in Culpeper, she didn’t hesitate to say yes.

“I do believe it will peak interest on this side of town,” Derflinger said.

She mentioned that since the hotel can hold up to 100 guests per night, the new hotel could lead to more businesses popping up nearby.

“It would be very smart of someone to maybe put a restaurant there because they're going to, they have, like I said, the potential of 100 guests almost every night,” she said.

Although it has only been a couple of months since the opening of the Hampton Inn, it is clear that the business will be successful. However, what is just as exciting is that Culpeper may be more successful because of the new hotel.

“The state recognized there was a problem, that employers were finding it difficult to get people into certain positions in their jobs, and the people applying for the positions didn’t have the skills,” PIVA Instructional Coordinator Joyce D’Urso said. “Now other states are looking at ours as a model.”

FARMERS MARKET • Culpeper Medical Center, a Novant Health UVA Health System facility, will host a community farmers market featuring produce and goods from local vendors every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning May 8 and running through October. The farmers market will be located near the main entrance of the medical center and encourages healthy eating for a healthier Culpeper. VIEWS Quality Ingredients, Good Fatherhood Fatherhood is like making jambalaya—it needs quality Marshall Conner ingredients, patience, love, timing and a highquality roux. Hot sauce should be used just enough to enhance the final product.

I’ve had good jambalaya and bad— that is the big 50/50 gamble of all things.

Fathers are no different.

The other night as my family watched a few family-shows on television it struck me that fathers are unfairly portrayed on television. Is this how Hollywood and the major network writers think American fathers live?

Who are these affable, easily fooled and clownish dads?

These men in no way resemble the good fathers I know.

It is always easier to go negative. To dismantle, has become an American art form.

Being chronically rebellious in nature I think that didactic rants of how it used to be different in the old days have made us all comfortably numb, as the Pink Floyd song laments. It is far too easy to find flaws in the current state of fatherhood in America—so let’s take a positive approach.

Let’s toss aside the rudderless fathers presented for our entertainment and salute the ones out there making fatherhood great.

We should also give a tilt of the hat to grandfathers who raise grandchildren and the single moms that must serve both roles, but those are topics for another day.

There are fantastic dads we encounter each day—the ones hugging their kids before school. The ones out improving the community, making lunches at 06:30, working hard to

provide, leading their families, protecting and actively enhancing their children’s lives.

The best fathers constantly provide examples and teach with love, not always perfection. My late father never ran from his flaws, in fact, he had very few. My dad worked to create sons who thought freely, showed kindness, possessed courage, respected all and loved their country. Through his daily actions he showed us how honor, integrity, love, faith and courage are more than words.

He showed us how to honor and respect women.

As the father of a teenage son I am aware that the father/son dynamic evolves daily whether we want it to or not. With age, words often become harder to find through life’s ups and downs. I smile when I catch myself giving the same life lectures that my dad gave. Of course, some advice fails to create action, but a few lessons always slip past the defenses of adolescence.

My father’s words make more sense now… yet he is gone.

Throughout my own journey through fatherhood I’ve tried to build on what I learned from my father. I try to fill the gaps that I perceived as a son.

I rejoice in seeing everything my children do and say---every day. I am thankful to be able to learn about the world again through my children. I smile just as wide when my kids fall and get back up as I do when they win it all.

My heart soars with every goal my son achieves and there’s an unbridled joy in hearing my daughter’s feet dancing across the living room floor each day after work.

The victories and more likely the defeats in life bring resilience, humility and courage into play.

A friend of mine Jean-Michel Andre made this point, “Television is just a box, or a flat rectangular screen in today's standards. Life is real. There are great dads… rather than TV dads.”

“I don't watch TV and haven't seen many recent films so can't comment on that. I can say that I see a lot more guys around with strollers or holding little hands and they all look engaged and capable. That's something you didn't often see when our kids were little, and it makes me happy,” commented Kathryn Uphaus.

Today’s dads do many things that weren't common in the past. Most dads are present when their kids are born (it sounds funny) but 50 years ago many dads opted for a cold beer while mom was in labor. Many dads I know change diapers, cook meals, help with homework and read bedtime stories.

Fathers tend to show more affection than the traditional father figures a generation or two back.

“My father was in the service. He was rarely around and when he was, he never talked much, but I felt closer to him than anyone else in my challenging family. He taught me to fish, swim, hunt, but socially, he was tuned out. My observations today show more of a lack of unconditional love. My dad may not have been the world’s best dad, but he was loved by me, and even though he couldn’t express his love, I knew he cared,” said Michael Smith, a middle-aged father. “I was also in the service and away a lot.

I tried to make the best of what time I did have with my boys. Fathers have a secret. Their love never dies.”

I think many of the negative things projected on fathers are symptomatic of all-selfishness, distraction and absence.

The real threat to family life in America is the complete absence of fathers.

The fathers presented by television and film in no way resemble the fathers we encounter.

Here’s to wonderful fathers, strong families and good jambalaya this Father’s Day. Concern borne by the provider one.

My guess is that the shoulders of this proud, Yet humble man, feel the gravity of A time gone by and a time yet to arrive – That time that remains before the threshold.

You see - the knowledge he has is at its height.

He knows that he has provided well for others.

With wisdom already imparted, he has paid his fare.

Take back your cruel imbalances of taxing everywhere.

Hands off I say - this is their golden years.

We have within our borders the smartest minds I know.

Match them with those who comprehend the challenges Of old.

May we, with him, hold our shoulders back when we Design a system that guards the threshold with A fearlessness - protecting the now to then.

Weekly Tarotscope - June 13 9 of Swords Reversed, 5 of Wands This week we are taking a hard look at stress and Cara Cutro conflict. The 9 of Swords reversed can be seen in two ways. We are either coming out of an intense time of anxiety and hopelessness to face a difficult situation, or we are sinking deeper into an isolated time of fear, avoiding the perceived conflict.

The solution to this is recognizing that we are falling victim to darkness of the mind. We can say no thank you to fear.

How do you respond to your thoughts and negative mental activity? Breathe deeply and shine light on your thoughts by questioning their validity. Things are often darkest before the dawn. We are being asked to release the bondage of anxiety and negative thinking this week.

can see that there is something messy to work through. It’s no wonder we are having a 9 of Swords moment. We must embrace the mess and allow ourselves to be in the process. 5 of Wands is a little bit of chaos that’s finding the proper channels to move forward.
