H E A LT H Orthopaedic surgeon or innovator? ➤ Dr. James Ramser weighs in on total hip health The hip is a major weight-bearing joint in the body and is responsible for many functional activities such as walking and running, sitting and standing, and climbing stairs. By keeping hips strong and mobile, folks can enjoy life to the utmost.

How can people keep their hips healthy? What is good routine care of hips? Dr. James Ramser, Jr., MD, orthopaedic surgeon, weighs in to offer helpful pointers for folks to bear in mind. We get to know his history, ties to Virginia, and love of all things mechanical, at the same time.

“Unfortunately, there is very little that can be done to prevent hip degeneration,” says Ramser. “Usually the arthritis is more of a hereditary problem. Staying active and keeping

strong muscles around the hip joint is probably the best way to manage things. I recommend walking as the best exercise.”

Q: What is something you’d like people to know about hip health that may surprise them?

Dr. Ramser: There is a condition called hip impingement syndrome that can be treated early with arthroscopy and delay the need for hip replacement, so if a person experiences groin pain or catching, they should get an evaluation for this. This brings up a point that most people don't realize.

Hip problems tend to cause pain in the groin. Buttock pain is usually unrelated to the hip, and is more of a back problem.

Q: We understand that you were the first surgeon in the area to begin anterior hip replacement.

Can you tell us more about how this development changed

surgical outcomes for patients?

Dr. Ramser: I began doing direct anterior total hip replacement in 2010, and to the best of my knowledge, I was one of the first surgeons in Virginia to routinely perform this procedure for essentially all of my primary total hip replacements – regardless of age, sex, or weight. The procedure is more difficult in heavier patients and especially in muscular men.

I've developed some techniques to overcome this difficulty.

I had previously done the more standard posterior hip replacement for 18 years, and decided to switch to the anterior approach to decrease the risk of dislocation, decrease the need for blood transfusion, and to more reliably restore equal leg lengths. The anterior approach has met this goal beyond my expectations.

The dislocation rate has decreased to less than 0.5% and the need for

blood transfusion has decreased more than 10 fold. There is typically much less pain after an anterior approach, and, in my experience, the postoperative return to activity is usually much faster.

Q: You have been in practice for a long time. What do you love most about your trade? What motivates you?

Dr. Ramser: The favorite part of my work is seeing a very happy patient who walks with no pain 4-6 weeks after surgery. This is true, especially, when prior to surgery they could barely walk or sleep due to the pain. It never gets old. I am also very attracted to the mechanical aspect of my work. It's in my blood.

My grandfather was a mechanic in the coal mines in West Virginia and my father was an orthopedic surgeon.

“I just hope things I’ve done and I’ve tried to accomplish, that I’ve made a difference in people’s lives in the community,” Barrett said. “I’ve had a great staff and I’ve had an amazing group of employees in the county that have helped and warm support of the community embracing the department and showing their love through donations and contributions.”

Supervisors volunteer to look into grant for syringe services program Culpeper County could be facing an HIV crisis.

April Achter, Population Health Coordinator, with the Va. Department of Health, warned the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors that a recent increase in Hepatitis C in the Planning District 9 health district could portend an HIV outbreak due to substance abuse and the use of dirty needles among users.

“Communities that have this outbreak, have a subsequent HIV outbreak,” Achter said. “We need to intervene now, so we can prevent an HIV outbreak in our community.”

Achter said that while prescription drug abuse has been on the downtrend in the health district, injectable substance abuse has been on the rise.

That has led to a 303 percent increase in 2015-2017 of Hepatitis C cases.

Hepatitis C has tripled in the U.S. There is no vaccine for it, and treatments cost $200,000 per patient.

Achter said the increase has affected the 18-30 year-old demographic.

In addition, Hepatitis A has seen an increase - especially in the homeless and substance abuse population.

Hepatitis A is orally transmitted, which makes it even easier to transmit.

“A lot of our folks who use substances work in restaurants,” Achter said. “We run the risk of having Hepatitis A in our community.”

She suggested a syringe services program - where users would be able to exchange dirty needles for clean one.

Fifty-five centers have been approved in Virginia and three are open in the state - Richmond, Wise and Smyth counties.

Catalpa Supervisor Sue Hansohn Suggested the board act quickly proposing asking to vote on a grant to put a center in Culpeper, but other supervisors cautioned that may attract the wrong type of person to the community.

“We’re going to have people coming from Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, it’s going to attract more people to our area as we’re providing the service,” Cedar Mountain Supervisor Jack Frazier said.

“We have to look at what’s coming right now and we have to address it,” Hansohn said.

In the end, Hansohn and West Fairfax supervisor Gary Deal agreed to volunteer to reach out to other municipalities in the health district to discuss a grant and center possibilities.

Culpeper Soccer Club Wins Big at Northern VA Cannon Cup

State Theatre listed for sale again

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer The State Theatre is up for sale again.

According to a listing on Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, the iconic Culpeper downtown theatre is for sale for $949,000. Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Simpson Realtors of Fredericksburg posted the listing last week.

Calls to the realtor were not returned Wednesday morning.

The listing reads: The historic State Theatre is situated on Main Street in downtown Culpeper. This 25,000 +/- square foot building was completely renovated in 2013. The property is zoned C-2, Central commercial district which permits a wide variety of uses to include retail, auditoria, theaters and assembly halls, hotels and a variety of other commercial and residential uses (complete list is attached). The property has a large theatre/auditorium which seated 548 (chairs have been removed) complete with a balcony and a projection room. The stage measures approximately 2,000 sf and was designed to accommodate theatre productions, bands and dance performances. Behind the stage are dressing rooms along with a loading dock and receiving area. The front of the theatre includes a large lobby, a box office and a concession area. Upstairs features a small intimate ~black box~ theatre space along with a

conference room, catering kitchen and a large outdoor balcony.The property appraised in June, 2017 for $5.8 million (real estate ONLY, not including FF&E).

Paige Read, Director of Economic Development and Tourism for Culpeper, had no comment on the listing.

In January 2018, the State Theatre was sold at auction to Marcus Silva, President of Villagio Hospitality Group. The final sale price was $726,000, following a 10 percent fee added onto the sale.

At the time, Silva said Villagio, which owns several Northern Virginia businesses including Farm Brew Live, Trattoria Villagio, Little Villagio, The Black Sheep and Two Silos Brewing, planned to use the State Theatre as an entertainment venue, but Silva said it was too early to share their full vision.

Since then, the building has seen some activity in terms of construction but for the most part sat silent.

Built in 1934 and originally part of the Pitts chain of theaters across Western Virginia, the State Theatre had a renaissance in 2012 with a $13 million complete renovation and furnishings/systems upgrade.

Investors from Rappahannock County, identified only as Melbell, LLC., and another unnamed couple have invested $5 million in the 500-seat theatre.

Until it closed Sept. 14, 2016, the theatre was led by a volunteer board of directors.

Culpeper Soccer Club (CSC) Travel Teams recently participated in the Memorial Day Cannon Cup Tournament hosted by partner club Virginia Soccer Association (VSA).

After competing for the last year in Club Champions League, an elite soccer league in VA, CSC teams found significant success in the Cannon Cup tournament to close out their season. Of the nine CSC teams competing in this tournament, five won Championships, two were Finalists, and two had 3rd Place finishes.

Dan Bales, CSC Technical Director, said, “The Cannon Cup is a fantastic tournament for our teams, and we couldn’t be more proud of the achievements earned by all CSC teams throughout the entire year. VSA operates a high-quality event every single year and we’re always excited to compete against strong teams in Northern Virginia. The coaching staff and players have worked so hard this year and I am extremely pleased to see them finish the Travel soccer season with such positive results.”

CCHS, CMS students find beauty in 'Shrek'

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Culpeper County High School and Culpeper Middle School students live happily ever after - after school’s out at least.

The two theatre groups have combined for the summer stages production of “Shrek Jr. - The Musical,” presented Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m. at the CCHS auditorium.

CCHS director and musical theater teacher Maxi Mitchell said it wasn’t hard to convince the students to come back to school just a week after the year wrapped up.

“I think we just have a passionate group,” Mitchell said. “They just love the arts and that’s what the program is all about, supplying them with a musical theatre summer camp - allowing them to keep doing it as much as they want. If it’s

Shrek gives them an opportunity to practice their comedy chops, while diving into a deeper meaning behind what it means to be an “outcast.” Rising junior Reilly Tanner plays the title role, while recent graduate Schuyler Hagen portrays Princess Fionna. Tyler Bowyer plays Donkey, Cole Edwards takes on the character of Lord Farquaad while 2019 graduate Sarah Hoy plays Pinnochio.

They perform all-original songs created specifically for the musical version.

“They aren’t necessarily familiar with the musical, but they know the movie,” Mitchell said.

Hagen, who will attend George Mason University in the fall to be part of their musical theater program, said this is a role she was excited to portray.

“I’ve seen all Shrek movies so it’s an awesome role to get to be,” Hagen said. “She’s really funny and gets to act stupid, so it wasn’t hard to have fun with her. “I noticed at the beginning tries to be all ‘princessy’ and not an ogre but it comes out slowly during it. By the time she’s an ogre she’s already gross and smelly.”

Hagen said she wouldn’t want to be anywhere else this summer - de-

spite already walking the stage at CCHS as a graduate.

“Being a part of this theater department for four years, I had so much fun with it,” Hagen said.

“Having an opportunity to do one more show with all these people that I love, it wasn't hard to be part of it.”

Tanner said the role of Shrek takes more than just filling out a fat suit.

“I feel like I have a lot to live up to,” Tanner said. “Mr. Wayne, one of the directors, played Shrek when he acted. He had a one-on-one session with me and he talked about the deeper complexities of the character. I feel like I have a legacy to live up to, but it’s a lot of fun. It’s a fun challenge.

“Everyone treats him like the calm-minded individual, but he has a heart, you have to treat him like he’s damaged because he was cast away so many times by so many different people,” Tanner said.

Tanner, too, couldn’t wait to get back into the school despite the year closing out just a week prior.

“I just have a lot of love of theater,” Tanner said. “It just started out as doing funny voices from kid cartoons. As I got into I realized there was more than just making funny voices.”

Pippin and Scooter are not telling – ever Before I tell you about Sebastian, let’s discuss my history with cat carriers. The first time I made the trip to the vet, I was an innocent and trusting kitten.

I sat in a picnic basket and enjoyed the ride. By the time we made the second trip, my Widow had invested in a carrier with mesh windows so I could see out, although there was nothing to see but the dashboard and door handles.

I managed it so well she had visions of the two of us taking cross-country trips. She would drive, and I would ride shotgun.

We took several practice spins around town. Then my native instincts kicked in.

Wait a minute, I said to myself, I am a cat and cats are bound by the rules of the Cat Manual to vigorously protest being put into a cat carrier. It’s what I must do.

From that time on, whenever the cat carrier came into the room, I shifted into escape mode. There were three beds to hide under, a sofa, chairs with skirts, and closets.

When my Widow approached I went from one to another as quick as a hare.

Several times she cancelled the vet appointment because I wore her out.

The last time, however, was different.

After the initial chase, she pretended to give up and take a nap. I pumped my paw in the air. But no sooner had I settled down to snooze then she got up and ambled from room to room closing doors. Next she offered me a treat. I thought I had won. When she picked me up, I wiggled free, but with all those closed doors, I had nowhere to go.

She soon had me in the “stuffing in” position. However, the carrier’s wire

door came to my rescue and gouged her forearm. Blood gushed. She had to tend to her wound, and I was on the loose again. I think she called the vet and cut a deal to forget my appointment time and just show up as circumstances permitted.

Truly I was concerned about my Widow’s blood loss. Would it hamper her ability to tend to my needs? I was in the mood to show compassion. We met on the stairs, and I surrendered.

Into the cat carrier I went.

Soon after that epic event, I began to hear of cousins and nieces and nephews who rode to the vet snuggled in one human’s lap while the other drove. An idea worth considering since laps are warmer than the floors of cat carriers.

And who doesn’t love a warm place?

Then I heard about Sebastian, a distinguished tabby who rode to his vet sitting in the passenger seat like a human. Straight up, so to speak. Why in the world would he do that, I wondered.

Simple. Sebastian had diabetes and had to make so many trips to the vet, he decided to take control and do it on his terms.

Further, he “manned up” to his insulin shots. I might have faked seizures or run for cover. But not Sebastian. It’s possible he is the one who originated the saying, “It is what it is.”

I know Sebastian’s story makes you wonder. But it’s true. Sebastian was a living, breathing cat who did exactly what I said. His human said he was one of a kind.

Next time I’ll tell you what we cats do for kicks when our humans leave us alone in the house. In the meantime, beware of diabetes. Exercise whether you like it or not.

“Anything in the store is available for purchase up to 10 o’clock, except the deli,” Yoder said.

Wagner said their milkshakes have been a big hit, with customers commenting on how thick and flavorful they are.

“The milkshakes are something we put a lot of thought into,” Yoder said.

Another huge hit have been the pretzel logs, and the homemade dips they offer - like the honey mustard sauce.

“We want to start making some of the others from scratch as well,” Wagner said. “We’re going to add some new flavors to the pretzels as well.”

“I think the biggest thing we’re going to do in the next couple of weeks is we’re going to

start adding signature dishes, like pie and ice cream,” Yoder said. “There’s a girl that works for the store that’s going to make the pies in the store and we’re going to use that with the ice cream.”

Food is a common theme when it comes to the duo’s Amish roots.

“My dad was raised Amish, my whole family does food,” Yoder said. “There’s a very high quality and there’s recipes you can’t find anywhere else. There’s not a lot of other things they do, food is something we can all get behind and excel in.”

The store expects to offer live music in the future and community events, beginning with a car show fundraiser for the family of Ericka Estes. Estes, 20, died suddenly last month and worked at the Ole Country Store for four years. They will have a benefit car show June 22 from 5 to 8 p.m.

“We want to do it in memory of her and as a fundraiser for the family,” Yoder said.

DXA Bone Mineral Density Screenings now available at Culpeper Medical Center Novant Health UVA Health System is pleased to announce the addition of a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) machine at Culpeper Medical Center, a Novant Health UVA Health System facility, for use in testing mineral deficiency in patients at risk for osteopenia (thin bones) or osteoporosis (brittle bones).

Members of the Culpeper community are just as susceptible to these conditions as anyone else, but until recently, had no local access to DXA screenings to determine the thickness and density of bones. With the addition of this low-dose X-ray system, more accurate screening for osteopenia and osteoporosis is available at Culpeper Medical Center.

“DXA machines provide a lot of value to medical providers who want to evaluate their patients’ risk of bone fractures,” says Pranav D. Patel, MD, chief of the department of medicine at Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center and a hematology-oncology provider at UVA Section of Community Oncology. “Culpeper Medical Center physicians now have access to DXA screening machines to construct bone density assessments to ensure an accurate diagnosis and move toward treating patients effectively.”

A traditional X-ray machine is able to look at bones but does not offer standardization like the DXA machine. DXA scans standardize a patient’s bone health to their demographics’ averages and determine a T-score to quantify the amount of bone density lost between screenings. It is a valuable resource for measuring changes to bone density

over time. They can also be a valuable tool in determining the cause of a traumatic fracture.

Physicians’ recommendations for DXA screenings depend on age, body composition, health history and certain lifestyle factors, but there isn’t necessarily a specific age range or demographic that should be screened. However, post-menopausal women, tall and thin women, smokers, people with chronic kidney or parathyroid conditions and patients on long-term medication plans are the populations most prone to osteopenia or osteoporosis, putting them at a higher risk of fracture or traumatic fracture.

Patients whose cancer treatments may require medications that can weaken bones or cause loss of bone mineral density are also at high risk for low bone mineral density.

FILM • “The Big Red One”(United Artists, 1980) Sam Fuller wrote and directed this epic war film, based on his own World War II experiences as a member of 1st Infantry Division, whose nickname was The Big Red One. Lee Marvin plays the gruff, unyielding sergeant leading a rifle squad across North Africa and into Europe over the course of two years. The squad serves in campaigns in Sicily, Omaha Beach at the start of the Normandy Campaign, the liberation of France and the invasion of western Germany.

Marvin’s four green, frightened soldiers are played by Mark Hamill, Robert Carradine, Bobby Di Cicco and Kelly Ward. The two-hour original version being shown here was less than half the length of Fuller's director's cut, but it retains his uncompromising vision. Made when Fuller was in his late 60s, “The Big Red One” provided a crowning achievement for his long and controversial career, in which his renegade techniques and film noir sensibilities made him a post-modernist before his time. VIEWS Why Not Have A $15 Minimum HOW I SEE IT

It's been said over and over again by experts that raising the minimal wage COSTS JOBS. This is simple to understand but it seems the liberals, the radical left and Democrats can't.

From the Congressional Budget Office to academia to independent think tanks, studies consistently show that minimum wage increases result in a loss of jobs. One study indicated that an increase to $12 per hour – less than what has been proposed in many areas – would cost us over 24,000 jobs.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, less than 3% of the hourly workforce earns the minimum wage.

Since such a small percentage is earning the minimum, why would so many jobs be lost? Those being paid the minimum wage are disproportionately young, often working only part-time, and are rarely breadwinners.

For employers, these jobs are the easiest to eliminate, endangering extra income and opportunity for those currently earning the minimum wage.

While there are exceptions, those who do earn the minimum wage do NOT earn it for very long. It is usually a starter wage. Wages are rising across the board for the first time in decade, and unemployment is at record lows.

Dramatically changing what amounts to entry-level compensation endangers our economic vitality. A wide coalition of groups representing small businesses, chambers of

commerce, the hospitality industry, manufacturers, and agribusinesses all weighed in on the issue, uniformly opposing the increase.

But, some how there are those who regard this issue as an emotional issue. How many times have you heard someone like Bernie Sanders say, "No one can live on the minimum wage.." Well, he's right if that person worked for that salary for a lifetime, but THEY DO NOT!!

The handwringing, sobbing politicians who insist on elevating the minimum wage do it only to glad hand and dupe their lower wage constituents to get votes from those who do not realize how the raising of the minimum wage COSTS JOBS!!

If these politicians are not duping their public, then they are very much ignorant of the facts and should not be in a position to be voting on an issue they are ignorant of.

are flat out lying. The negativity can break some people, but not Emmett.

Emmett doesn’t hide behind a caucus, party or organization; he leads and works with others to share in that responsibility of moving Virginia forward. He doesn’t cower to challenges and he does it with a grace and demeanor I have seen from far too few politicians.

I love the verse, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” People forget true leadership is only successful by having a servant’s heart. It is only with humbleness and a willingness for second chances, honesty and faith that you can really be a true leader; otherwise you are just “running to keep your seat.” I can tell you he is not driven by ambition to “be” something, he is driven, ceaselessly, to “do” something. He works tirelessly to improve our

schools, mental and health care systems, environment, economics, and to put Virginia in the best shape possible for our next generations.

He recently was named “Top Ten Most Productive State Legislators in America.” Let that sink in.

Our area reaps great benefits from his service and opportunities like finance co-chairman that only come after years of service and experience; don’t let some slick opposition campaign tell you otherwise.

It is still one vote out of 140 General Assembly Members but Emmett is that one vote working to bring consensus and common sense to Virginia. Vote Hanger June 11.

'Pirates…' The Very Model of a Modern Operetta They fancy themselves a dangerous lot, but the grim list of killed and captured by the Pirates of Penzance is… nonexistent.

Their job is to be fierce and take hostages, but somehow - dash it all! – the hostages always turn out to be orphans! And being orphans themselves, they just can’t take ungentlemanly advantage. That means our pirates are no more successful now in 2019 than they were back in 1879. That’s when this Gilbert and Sullivan jewel first held audiences captive with its rapier wit, and it’s been swashing its buckles ever since.

In a whimsical modification, director Catherine Flye has renamed this the “Rascals of the Rappahannock” and brought the pirates to Fredericksburg in the time of George III, as opposed to the Victorian era Cornwall coast.

She has also captured a critical element in its success: tone. “Pirates” anticipates Monty Pythonesque humor by nearly a century, and this crew understands that a joyful embrace of English absurdity is the only way to go. And humor is a serious business.

The first bit of funny happened years earlier when Ruth, a hard-ofhearing nurse, misunderstood her employer’s directive to apprentice young Frederic to “pilots” and turned him over to “pirates” instead. (“When Frederic was a little lad”) They’re not particularly ferocious pirates, although they do say “ARrrr!” very well, and Frederic forged some tender friendships.

But now, apprenticeship over, he must go into the world, renounce his past, and get a job. Alas, honor dictates that his new job will be stamping out piracy.

The story would end here rather abruptly but for two things. Frederic sees for the first time in his sheltered life what real girls look like and promptly falls in love with Mabel. (“Oh, false one, you have deceived me” sung to Ruth). And Ruth, with the help of The Pirate King, convinces Frederic that, since he was born on Feb. 29, he is only five and must stay with the pirates until he has celebrated twenty-one actual birthdays. Frederic might be a tad dull-witted, but confound it all, he’s honorable! So he agrees.

The song titles alone signal the tongue-in-cheek approach to the era’s romanticism. “Oh, is there not one maiden breast?” (Frederic

Well, you get the gist.

Here I must point out an overlooked truth: the best designers and performers are not going to be the cheapest. Kudos to producing artistic director, Patrick A’Hearn, for throwing the net far and wide to score what is a near flawless cast. You don’t get these results by making “cheap and available” your first criterion.

I am reminded of this axiom while recalling some of the truly outstanding performances. Andrew Ross Wynn as Major-General Boshington, proud father of the seven damsels, blusters his way to the stage and holds us in thrall with the one song that has survived down to the present, “I am the very model of a modern Major-General.” It’s a virtuoso piece of patter and wit, the performance of which is the operetta’s version of a trapeze act.

The charmingly befuddled Ruth could have been thrown away on any smiling local of middle years, but was not. Sherri Edelen has the specific look, move, attitude, and voice for this important role and holds her own in solo and ensemble.

I’m not overly demanding about my Pirate Kings, but I must insist on a gent who can sing “Away, away!

My heart’s on fire” while looking splendid in purple silk and long curly wig. David Jennings is our man.

The strength of his stage presence balances the ensemble of his ragged pirate crew, and he is impossible not to watch.

Our lad Frederic is well served

by Samuel Keeler’s innocent good looks and rich tenor, though he does fall in love with shocking speed (2.3 seconds). But he falls in love with Mabel. Mabel! Let us put a star by Claire Leyden’s name. Not only is this lovely actress ideal for light operetta, her classically trained soprano has a crystalline purity that I rarely hear on professional stages anywhere. Add her to the entire company singing “Oh, men of dark and dismal fate” and prepare for goose bump-raising harmonies.

This rollicking band of pirates meets their archenemies in the Redcoated militia led by Sgt. Pomfrey played by Alan Hoffman, who shines in roles of dry absurdity. Linda Miller’s original choreography puts

All of this comes to us on April Vester’s set designed to accommodate the idea of a rocky Rappahannock shore with docked corsairs, as well as a platform for Joe Walsh’s live orchestra. George III and George

Washington observe the goings-on from their portraits on either side.

It’s all delicious, well-made fun.

Let us hope that audiences 140 years from now will still get “Pirates’…” swashbuckling appeal.

Eastern View High School celebrated winning the Community Cup May 30. The Cyclones won the Cup with 135 points while Culpeper County High School had 60 points. It was a close race until the spring sports season, when EVHS outscored Culpeper 70-10 to secure the victory. The cup, sponsored by Virginia Community Bank, is awarded to the school with the most wins in head-to-head matchups between the two Culpeper County high schools. Contests sanctioned by the Virginia High School League count toward the total. EVHS won the fall season with 230 points (CCHS had 25), EVHS also won the winter season with 35 points (CCHS -25) and EVHS finished strong with a 70 point spring.

CulpeperFest scheduled for June 14

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer CulpeperFest is moving back to Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center.

After being hosted at Eastern View High School the past four years, the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce Culpeperfest committee decided to move the annual business showcase back to the Daniel Technology Center.

“I think the biggest reason is the space at the Daniel Technology Center,” committee member Marshall Keene said. “It allows the chamber to expand the number of vendors and the type of vendors we can invite. For many of the chamber members the school setting wasn’t a good fit for them so we’re hoping Germanna can accommodate everybody.”

One of the highlights of moving the venue back to the Daniel Technology Center was the ability to host alcohol vendors.

Three local breweries - Far Gohn Brewery, Old Trade Brewery, Beer Hound Brewery - and several wineries will be able to offer their selections to visitors.

The venue at Germanna also allows for

vendors to be in the same space.

“Some of that was in response to the general public as well as the vendors,” committee member Mike Jenkins said. “People felt like they were separated. We wanted to get it back to one central location.”

While alcohol will be available, Keene stressed that CulpeperFest will still have activities for all ages.

“The goal is to still have a family event,” Keene said. “The town has loaned us their stage so we’re still going to have music.”

CulpeperFest has become the go to event for seeing friends and neighbors over the years.

“Not only do they get the opportunity to see the business people, but many people that don’t see each other between the event,” Jenkins said. “It’s a way to meet up with old friends and acquaintances.”

“It’s a way for chamber to showcase Culpeper’s businesses to the community,” Keene said.

CulpeperFest will be held Friday, June 14 from 4 to 9 p.m. Businesses do not have to be a member of the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce to be a vendor, though fees are reduced for chamber members.
