Stafford High Cost to rename Godwin sparks new debate to return to AGENTS OF CHANGE

T
he Prince William School Board is turning the page on its controversial decision to rename Mills E. Godwin Middle School, in part because of the late governor’s segregationist views. The next chapter: how to pay for it.
By next school year, the 46-year-old Dale City middle school will be named for George M. Hampton, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and philanthropist whose military and community service inspired his supporters to lobby the board to honor his legacy. The board’s March 2 decision to rename
Godwin for Hampton was initially a surprise proposal offered as part of a compromise that also named a new county elementary school for fallen Prince William firefighter Kyle Wilson. Amid accusations that board members acted too abruptly and failed to seek community input for their initial vote,
the school board revisited the decision April 6, but voted again to affirm its initial decision. Va. 17 business crossover in Stafford to be closed The Virginia Department of Transportation will close a Route 17 Business crossover in Stafford County at the intersection with Melchers Drive and Washington Street to reduce crashes and prevent additional injuries. Closing the crossover means left turns will no longer be possible from Washington Street onto Route 17 Business northbound, or from Melchers Drive onto Route 17 Business southbound, according to VDOT. Right turns into and from Washington Street and Melchers Drive will continue to be permitted at the intersection. The decision to close the crossover was made after a review found 53 crashes occurred at the intersection over a fouryear period between 2012 and 2015. Most of the crashes were angle crashes, and 30 people were injured. “Changing the traffic pattern at this location should significantly reduce the crash risk for motorists exiting at these streets, as well as for motorists traveling on Route 17,” said Kyle Bates, Assistant Fredericksburg Residency Administrator. “We recognize this will require residents to adjust their daily travel pattern, and we apologize for any disruption this may cause. However, the safety benefits of closing the crossover were clear.” The crossover is scheduled to close by June 1. A raised concrete median will be installed across the current opening. Message boards will be stationed on area roads leading to the intersection approximately one week before the closure date.
One-way signs will be posted on Melchers Drive and Washington Drive for motorists approaching the Route 17 Business intersection, indicating only right turns are permitted for traffic exiting these streets. Traffic is expected to divert to Route 1 northbound or Route 212 (Chatham Heights Road) and Route 218 (Butler Road). Additional lane capacity that opened at the Falmouth intersection in September 2015 can accommodate the increased number of vehicles. During peak morning and afternoon travel periods, only 1-2 vehicles per minute turns left from Washington Street onto northbound Route 17 Business, on average. Lower traffic volumes are present on Melchers Drive. Traffic projections show these vehicles can be accommodated on surrounding primary roads and the Falmouth intersection. “We waited to study traffic conditions until after the opening of the expanded Falmouth intersection last September,” Bates said. “We wanted to be confident that surrounding roads could handle the additional number of vehicles if we closed the crossover.” Motorists are reminded that a 25 mph speed limit is posted on several residential streets in the Falmouth area, including Ingleside Drive, Lendall Lane, Melchers Drive and Washington Street.

1 involves taking Washington Avenue around to Va. 17 and making a left on Va. 17 to go west. I confess that I took that cut-through many times and can attest to how difficult and treacherous it could be to make a left turn from Washington Avenue onto Va. 17 west. And recently we learned just how risky it is to use that cut through. VDOT reports that 53 crashes occurred at that intersection from 2012 to 2015. They also report that 30 people were injured by cars coming together at a difficult-to-see angle for oncoming traffic. Now a raised concrete median will prevent cars from crossing into the oncoming westbound Va. 17 traffic. Some folks might initially find this inconvenient, but a crash into a hard-tosee oncoming westbound car is a lot more inconvenient. This is a good decision and is another well-thought-out change for that intersection. We also tend to forget that the project was finished on time and, unless I’m mistaken, on budget. Folks in Stafford and Fredericksburg routinely complain about the traffic. While much remains to improve the overall commuting traffic issues, the Falmouth intersection improvement projects is one success that deserves a standing ovation for a job well- done.

FAMILY TECH | MARK STOUT
Here’s some advice for using cell phones overseas Before my wife left for Israel, and my son and I visited her, I had to figure out how we could use our cell phones outside the United States. There are two kinds of cell phone technologies in the world. Here in the U.S., AT&T and T-Mobile use the GSM system while Verizon and Sprint use CDMA. Most of the world outside the U.S. uses the GSM system — think Beta and VHS or AM and FM. They are similar systems, but different. I checked the specs to our phones by googling the models online. Because my wife bought her iPhone at an Apple store, it was set up to work with both the CDMA and GSM systems. The Android phones my son and I have worked with both systems. Ask your cell company if your phone can work on GSM systems if you cannot find the information online. Next, check with your provider for advice. Sprint told me it had an international roaming plan I could put on our phones for free. In Sprint’s case, it allowed for unlimited data roaming but at speeds from 10 years ago, 2G technology speeds. That’s pretty slow. It also allowed for phone calls at 20 cents a minute. I asked it to activate its international roaming for our phones so we at least have this capability when we first arrived in Israel. I also asked it to unlock our phones. When you buy a phone from a provider like Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T, the phones come locked to its system. Phone companies are fearful people might subscribe to a two-year contract, receive a free phone, and then stop paying their bills and sell their
phone on eBay. Phones cost well over $500 in most cases, with some close to $1,000. Phone companies subsidize the phone’s cost and we pay for them as part of our monthly charge over the life of our cell phone contracts, often two years. While the phone is locked, you cannot use it on another carrier’s system. However, most carriers will unlock your phone if you ask. Your payments need to be up-to-date and you have to have been a customer for a period of time, perhaps as little as 90 days. By having our phones unlocked, and also able to support the GSM system common in Israel, we were able to buy new SIM cards for our phones. SIM cards are tiny electronic cards in a GSM phone that tell the phone how to access the local cell network. You will probably see kiosks and stores for SIM cards in the airport when you arrive. It is generally a good idea to pass those by and seek out lower-cost SIMs sold at many stores. My wife found a SIM card provider at the university where she is studying that offers unlimited phone calls in Israel and unlimited data at modern, high speed 3G technology for only $15 a month. Ponder that for a minute and compare it to what you are paying for your cell plan. Our first day in Tel Aviv we bought SIM cards for our phones and a data plan for a gigabyte of data. That would make our phones as if we’d purchased them from a cell phone provider in Israel, with an Israelbased phone number and all. The salesperson removed our U.S. SIM card and reminded us
FRIDAY, APRIL 15, 2016 | WWW.INSIDENOVA.COM/NEWS/STAFFORD/ | STAFFORD COUNTY SUN
to save it for our return to the U.S. The data didn’t come online right away, but we were assured it would recognize the system in about 20 minutes. By the time we returned to our AirBnB hours later, we still did not have data service. I called tech support and they helpfully had an English-speaking tech call me back. He asked me to check various settings in my phone’s settings app. He kept asking me to find a setting on my phone for “APN Servers.” Tech support told me what settings I should enter for APN Servers, and I was soon up and running with fast 3G data. Links for that app are in this week’s link post at FamilyTechOnline.com. When I got home, it was a simply a matter of removing the SIM I’d purchased and reinstall the Sprint SIM the salesperson in Israel had removed. I was then back on Sprint in the U.S. Had our phones not been GSM ready, or Sprint had refused to unlock the phone, many stores overseas will rent you a phone for the duration of your visit. I didn’t worry about making international calls, or costs of texting. By using Facebook messenger and Whatsapp, we were able to make calls and text to each other, and friends and family back in the U.S., using just the data plan.

Stafford youths honor local teachers JEFF SCHRADE
For The Stafford County Sun
Teachers from a variety of schools in Stafford County were recently honored by teenage members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at several different events. “When I see the success of our children, it is because of people like you. Tonight we thank and honor you for all you have done for all of us,” said Rob Carver to the teachers honored by the teenagers. Carver serves as the bishop of the Accokeek ward. Among the dozens of teachers honored were a mother and her daughter. Christine Thompson teaches history at North Stafford High School and Deanna Thompson teaches science at Colonial Forge. Christine Thompson was been recognized several weeks earlier at Rock Hill ward’s teacher appreciation night. “I didn’t know my mom was being honored until I

arrived,” said a surprised Christine Thompson. “I was really delighted to see my daughter here. It is real honor for both of us,” Deanna Thompson said. The sense of joy the mother and daughter expressed
was reflected among the many students who praised the individual teachers they had invited to the event. Among the comments from the kids: “My teacher is amazing,” said Alyson Burlew. “He’s just awesome. He makes the class fun,” said Carol Black of Mr. Tavenner. Olivia Carver spoke highly of Christine Thompson: “She helps us be all we can be. She’s just great.” “She loves each and every one of her students. She knows her subject and makes it fun to be there,” said Caleb Stark. “I never thought I’d enjoy history or politics, but he’s just wonderful,” said Madison Porter about her teacher, Tom Coen. The tradition of honoring teachers in the Stafford area began about 15 years ago and has been continued by the five Mormon congregations in the county. “Our ward was formed three years ago, and this is our third year honoring teachers in our area,” said Carver. “We believe that to glorify god, we should obtain as much education as possible. We couldn’t do that without great teachers.”

Colonial Forge High hosts Agents of Change Day ocal students who are members of Agents of Change hosted a morning of sharing knowledge, stretching their muscles and helping to feed the hungry. The multi-purpose room at Colonial Forge High School was packed with about 75 displays from county schools and businesses. Local organizations also got a chance to promote their causes. The seventh annual Agents of Change Day brought out about 600 visitors for the April 9 event, estimated Cynthia Lucero-Chavez, community involvement specialist at Stafford County Public Schools. For the physical development portion of the event, there were inflatable bounce houses and slides, along with a chance to take part in the
ever-popular Zumba workout. Students from each high school helped facilitate AOC Day and conducted their annual Celebration of Service-Learning with the theme of “Awareness. This year was the first for helping in the Stop Hunger Now program, which was begun by a Virginia minister in 1998. Students formed an assembly line to mix dry foods and then package the mixture into individual plastic pouches. Each pouch was sealed and boxed for shipment. During the three hours of production, the students packaged 10,159 meals, Lucero-Chavez said. To keep track of the number, every 1,000 meals packaged was signaled by the striking of a flat gong hanging near the cart of boxes ready for shipment.

Mountain View grad up to speed at Randolph lacrosse Other colleges that he looked at for lacrosse were Division III Hood in Frederick, Maryland; Division III Greensboro in North Carolina; and Coker in South Carolina. “The biggest thing about Randolph was the coaching. I just felt I fit in really well,” he said. Hunley was an all-conference, all-area and all-state player at Mountain View. He is the son of David and Rhonda Hunley, and his older brother, Jake, played lacrosse at Mountain View. Their father played high school baseball. Katie Jones of Mountain View is a member of the women’s lacrosse team as a freshman at Randolph.

It did not take Luke Hunley long to realize the difference between high school and college lacrosse. “The biggest change is really game speed,” said Hunley, a standout at Mountain View High. “College is a lot faster. In high school there are a few elite athletes. [In college] everyone is much faster.” The Stafford resident is adjusting to the college game as a freshman defender at Division III Randolph, a member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Wildcats won seven of their first 11 games overall and were 1-2 in the ODAC. Hunley, a three-year varsity player at Mountain View, saw action in the first 11 games at Randolph. “I am playing more than I thought I would, which is good,” he said. “I think we are very balanced. No matter who is on the field, there is no drop off ” in skill level. Hunley will be out of school in late April and hopes to play in an adult lacrosse league in the Richmond area this summer. Randolph lost, 6-3, on March 19 at Randolph-Macon in Ashland then lost two weeks later 11-7 at Roanoke – at the time ranked No. 19 in the country. “We lost a tough one to RandolphMacon, which is a good team. Swink headed to Virginia Chapter of National Wrestling Hall of Fame Colonial Forge wrestling coach Bill Swink is being inducted into the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on April 16 at the BILL SWINK Wyndham Virginia Crossings in Glen Allen. At the banquet he will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for all that he has done for the sport of wrestling over the past four decades, according to a news release. His coaching career started at Connellsville Junior High West in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, where he served as head coach for six seasons before moving to Virginia. Since the move, he has been the head coach at North Stafford and Osbourn Park, and has served as an assistant at Stafford, C.D. Hylton, North Stafford and Louisa County high schools. The Ferrum roster includes Stafford High graduate Tommy Davis, a freshman,
and Johnny Tallez, a senior from Mountain View. Tallez had a goal against Randolph. Hunley played several sports as a young boy, including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, track, swimming and wrestling. He went on to play for a club lacrosse team while in middle school.
MARY WASHINGTON BASEBALL The Mary Washington baseball team had a wild week as the Eagles split a doubleheader with conference power Salisbury, losing 11-6 and winning 23-6 on the road April 4. Stafford products James Keller (Colonial Forge), a senior catcher, and freshman infielder Ramsis Ruiz (Brooke Point) each had three hits and drove in four runs in the win over Salisbury. Mary Washington then lost 6-5 in 11 innings on April 5 at the Apprentice School and won at home April 6 against St. Mary’s, 9-4. Gregory a fixture in North Stafford lineup DAVID STEGON
For the Stafford County Sun
With the bases loaded in the fourth inning of a tight game against Mountain View, Austin Gregory moved in a few steps to catch a fly ball from his position in centerfield. Anticipating the runner coming home from third, Gregory crow hopped and unleashed a throw home that first baseman Logan Sanders cut off. The runner at third never budged, even though that’s a situation where most runners would make a dash for the plate. Apparently, Gregory’s arm has a reputation. A two-time all-state selection, Gregory will play baseball next season at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond as one of a handful of Stafford County players to receive Division 1 scholarships. “VCU always felt like the right place for me,” Gregory said after his team’s loss to Mountain View last week. “Ever since my first visit there, I knew that was where I wanted to go.” Gregory verbally committed to the Rams in 2014 and has never wavered. He’s been a fixture on the North Stafford baseball team, starting in right field as a freshman and then moving to centerfield as a sophomore. At 5-foot-11 and 155 pounds, Gregory admits he’s not an imposing physical player, but he mixes a number of things
coaches love: great reactions in the field, an ability to get on base, excellent base running and a hunger to improve. Gregory said he looks up to Billy Burns, the Oakland Athletics centerfielder who showed many of those same qualities during a semi-breakout season last year and also comes in a slightly smaller package. “The way he plays, using his speed, getting on base, playing defense, are all things that I try to do well,” Gregory said. “He shows that players can come in all sizes.” Gregory said he is trying to add some weight before heading to VCU. That includes extra weightlifting as he prepares for the demands of a college season. He said the VCU coaches have not talked with him about a position, but as a lefthanded thrower he jokes “there aren’t too many places in the infield you can put me.” As for his senior season, Gregory wants to help North Stafford reach the regional tournament. Despite a slow start that saw only one win in the team’s first eight games, he remained optimistic that the team could turn the season around. “We have a lot of talent and a lot of great players,” he said. “Everything is still coming together, but I think we can still accomplish a lot this year.”
