Coronavirus testing is an oral or nasal swab administered after someone has been screened and identified as a person at-risk for infection.

Q: The media keep talking about the importance of flattening the curve. What does that mean?

A: That refers to a model that tracks coronavirus cases over time. And that model includes two predictions. One is the sharp spiking cases that would occur if we don’t take preventive measures, such as social distancing, practicing good hand hygiene and covering coughs and sneezes. The second prediction is the possibility of fewer cases spread out over a longer period of time that would occur if we’re

successful with our preventive measures. If everyone uses the recommended preventive measures, we can flatten the curve and thereby prevent healthcare systems from getting overwhelmed with cases.

Q: It sounds like the vaccine is still several months away. What should people do in the meantime to protect themselves?

A: Continue practicing everyday preventive actions.

Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue. And don’t forget to throw the tissue away! We’ve said this before, but it can’t be emphasized enough, wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

The CDC has made a number of recommendations over the last few weeks about reducing the size of group gatherings. The most recent recommendation is that people should avoid groups of 10 or more. And if you’re healthy, there are a number of proactive measures you can take to prevent infection. Social distancing is a good example. A good rule of thumb is to maintain at least 6 feet of separation between you and other people to reduce your exposure to germs.

Q: What is the difference between isolation, quarantine and shelter in place?

A: Self-isolation is a measure that we take to prevent infection.

So, if you’re concerned you might have the infection you should stay home. It’s really a step up from social distancing – maintaining at least 6 feet of separation.

Shelter in place is very similar to self-isolation but usually involves the closure of businesses and schools, similar to what we’ve seen across the country.

Quarantine is for people who have been exposed or have symptoms of coronavirus and intended to prevent the spread of the virus.

Quarantine is usually established for the incubation period of the communicable disease, which is the span of time during which people have developed illness after exposure.

Q: What do you do if someone in your house has been diagnosed with coronavirus?

as COVID-19, and other viral respiratory infections, such as influenza, pregnant women have had a higher risk of developing severe illness.

There is increasing concern that pregnant women may be at increased risk for significant complications related to this infection. It is always important for pregnant women to protect themselves from illness and discuss their concerns with their physicians.

Q: Do children and adults experience different coronavirus symptoms?

A: While children continue to experience much milder symptoms than adults, some children did not experience a fever and had more digestive symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Old House Vineyards now distilling hand sanitizer

Old House Vineyards is fighting back against COVID-19 and serving up a new style of alcohol, ethanol-based hand sanitizer, produced from gin out of their distillery.

The bottling process began early last week and later in the week they began distributing 6,000 bottles to core town personnel so that essential services may continue to be provided to the community throughout this pandemic.

Ryan Kearney, general manager at Old House, gives much credit to James Rutledge, brewery manager, for the hand sanitizer idea. Amidst these times of social distancing and quarantines Old House recently discontinued tastings and single glass sales, then transitioned from indoor seating to outdoor seating only, then pared all the way down to strictly parking lot pick up orders; the shutdown phase had begun.

Initially the plans were to place dispensers at different locations downtown but since the product is thinner than the typical commercial hand sanitizers, Old House is instead distributing smaller individual bottles. Old House has entered a partnership with the town of Culpeper for this endeavor.

“They are floating us some money for some costs to cover bottles, labels and such,” said Kearney. Old House has been working side by side with Paige Read [pronounced Reed], Director of Tourism and Economic Development for the town of Culpeper. “Our goal is to keep everyone healthy, so we don’t have any interruptions while providing necessary services to the community,” said Read.

“First responders, police, light and power, public works, sanitation, and of course Town Hall are among the first receiving the hand sanitizer so people can stay safe and pay bills effectively,” Read said recently. “It’s important to keep things running smoothly during this time,” she said, “Our immediate goal is to work with priority partners to make sure they are equipped”. Town supplies are down due to the public demand so providing this product was an interest of Old House owners and employees.

Kearney acknowledged that Old House is not the only distillery doing this. Many are starting to pop up, so supplies are low and harder to find. Locally, Belmont Distillery in Culpeper, Rappahannock Cellars in Huntly, Virginia and Silverback Distillery in Afton, Virginia have also started producing their own hand sanitizers, though on a much smaller scale.

“I, personally, don’t think I have used as much hand sanitizer in my life as I have lately,” Kearney said recently. “We are planning for up to 50,000 bottles because we are going to be in this phase for a longer time than we initially thought,” he said.

Kearney added that the plan is to be able to provide the much sought after product to the general community as well but stressed the importance of meeting the needs of the front line first.

“After this [pandemic] dies down, we would like to transition back to a liquid focus, for consumption,” Kearney laughed.

Read called it “liquid love.”

During this time of social isolation and uncertainty the focus of Old House Winery has temporarily changed. Kearney said, “we have the ability to do something and this is something we can do.” He noted how roles changed during World War II; how the roles of women changed and how factories changed their focus from producing household goods to war goods. “So, this [hand sanitizer] is a little bit of our ‘war time effort,’” said Kearney.

“The Kearney family are local heroes. They recognize the need and importance of contributing to

the health of the community. They have done creative troubleshooting to fill that need. They are just really good people doing really good things with the resources available,” Read said.

Old House winery, distillery, brewery and pub is open only for drive up purchases. All bottles of wine are 10 percent off and crowlers of beer are $8. Distilled spirit products are also available, however, all beverages are sold strictly on a to go basis.

Ming, Max, Maddy and Cadence Most of my friends are rescues. They either show up at a human’s door or are brought home from an animal shelter. But Ming, Max, Maddy, and Cadence are Siamese. That’s literally a different breed. It’s more upper crust, and usually involves a breeder.

Ming, for example, was a beautiful Lilac Point Siamese who was acquired by a retired Navy captain. He was a lonely widower and needed company. Ming was young and eager to produce beautiful kittens to fill his house. But when the Navy captain took her to the breeder to begin the process, Ming had second thoughts. She decided she had “scruples.” No one-night stands for her. She wanted a long-term relationship.

Thinking it best not to argue with a Siamese, the breeder introduced her to a young Blue Tonkinese named Max. Ming gave him the once over and said "yes."

Max and Ming then began a relationship that produced three litters of gorgeous kittens. When asked about their longterm marital harmony, Max said it was no mystery. He learned from the start to always agree with whatever Ming had in mind.

Ming, however, was not blessed with a long life. Max grieved quietly at first and then settled into being a dad to one of their daughters. Still being his agreeable self, he always let his daughter have the last word; and the rumors began to grow that Max was henpecked.

Maybe so, but he outlived his strongwilled daughter and ultimately found a new soul mate in a Blue Point Siamese via the internet.

Maddy, or Madelyn Rose, was an experienced mother thirty times over, and was ready for a peaceful retirement.

Max and Maddy get along famously, I am told. Max, the perfect gentleman, keeps his thoughts to himself and, as always, lets his companion run the show.

Which brings me to Cadence, one of Ming and Max’s other daughters.

CALLY TALES Cally

Cadence had an extraordinary amount of curiosity. First it was the “thumbball” mouse in the center of the computer keyboard which she attacked and demolished along with the four surrounding keys. Cadence pretended to be the wide-eyed innocent. Didn’t they say it was a mouse? Didn’t they expect her to eliminate the mice in the house?

Her staff made the necessary repairs and forgave her, deciding it was an honest mistake. However, they kept the computer under tight watch.

Cadence next explored the sewing room. There she found some clothes to be mended, and a threaded needle. Being curious about the taste of this strange new thing, she swallowed the needle whole and bolted from the room with the thread hanging out of her mouth. When her staff caught up with her, the thread was disappearing.

The vet took X-rays and found the needle and thread in her stomach.

He advised that surgery was possible but that the conventional wisdom was “sharps will pass.” His advice was to keep an eye on Cadence and her litter box.

Three days passed and Cadence showed no signs of distress. Her litter box, however, produced a waste deposit the size of a tootsie roll with the needle in the center and the thread connecting several segments.

I’m not making this up. Not even a talented and imaginative Calico like me would dream up such a story. I submit it’s a tribute to an amazing Creator who designed our systems to protect us — from ourselves.

Next time I’ll tell you about my California friends, Katie and Racer.

Church offers outdoor Stations of the Cross

By Pat Fitzgerald For the Culpeper Times The congregation of Little Fork Episcopal Church in Rixeyville has found a way to help families come together for prayer this Easter weekend despite churches being closed due to the coronavirus.

While Little Fork Episcopal will not hold in-house church services, Rector Stacy Williams-Duncan and her congregation have created a religious experience that is open to the public.

People will have the opportunity to pray the Stations of the Cross, which depicts the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, from either inside their car or by walking along a country lane full of blooming cherry trees.

The religious artwork was created

by Choctaw artist Melonie Twelves, a friend of Williams-Duncan. The two women worked together along with others in the community to bring the artwork to Culpeper County.

➤ Stations, from Page 8 Nation,” Williams-Duncan said. “I have a very dear friend in Oklahoma who is an artist, Melonie Twelves, and who is a member of the Choctaw Nation. So, I’ve known these set of Stations of the Cross for over a decade. I’ve known them and seen them and experience them.

“When the Episcopal Bishop, Susan Goff, first told us in a conference call … with all the clergy in the diocese that we were not going to have church and there’s a chance that it’s going to last through Holy Week, I began to say, ‘Oh my gosh, this so bizarre and how are we going to do this?’ I was completely weirded out. What do you do?” WilliamsDuncan said.

Last weekend, church leaders placed large copies of the Stations of the Cross up on Little Fork Episcopal Church’s property at 16461 Oak Shade Road in Rixeyville.

“My first thought was, ‘How am I going to get copies of Melonie’s Native-American Stations of the Cross?’ Because it seems to me there’s just something that we needed to tap into the resilience of native people who survived pandemic after pandemic after pandemic in order to find the spiritual resilience of this pandemic,” Williams-Duncan said.

“I kept feeling there is something we can learn from this.

“That night I called Melonie on the phone in Oklahoma, and said ‘I’m wondering about it.’ And she very generously said, ‘I completely trust you, let me send you the artwork. So she sent it to me and I began to think about what I am going to do,’” Williams-Duncan added. “A long time ago I thought, ‘Someday I want to hang Melody’s Stations of the Cross on this ground to pay homage to the native people who lived here long before any of the European settlers who came here.’”

Little Fork Episcopal Church was founded on the same Rixeyville property in 1731. “The building that’s here was consecrated in 1776 and that was the third church building on this property,” WilliamsDuncan said. “When I think about standing in the place and praying, this is very close to that story of who was here and who lived here. I just decided, I thought ‘well, OK, I am going do it this year. Maybe this is the year to do it.’”

With the help of a banner maker in Charlottesville, and volunteers Ed Dodd, Richard, Beau and Renae Gutridge, Joel Duncan and Bill Gaylene and Laimbeer, the rector’s vision has become a reality.

“Some amazing engineers from my congregation determined how we can put stands up that were temporary but sturdy enough to survive the wind,” she said.

Or they’re far enough apart that you can walk them and you can still pray them individually as you were praying them,” WilliamsDuncan said.

“I was talking to a friend who said, ‘what about people who can’t drive out to Little Fork. What about people in other parts of the country?’

So, I began to wonder about what we were going to do and how that was going to happen.”

Williams-Duncan noted that while Stations of the Cross are considered a Roman Catholic tradition, they’re not exclusive to that church.

“I think that it’s important to recognize that this is not a Catholic church,” the Episcopal rector noted.

“Stations of the cross are a Roman Catholic tradition, but they’re not limited to the Roman Catholic church. As an Episcopal Church, we consider ourselves both Protestant and Catholic in tradition, and they’ve always been part of the Episcopal tradition, but they’re also being prayed at lots of other churches.

This website went up and I had emails from a Presbyterian Church in Kansas City that said, ‘we have those stations,’ and another church in Arizona that said, ‘we have a set of those stations.’ So, I think that was a beautiful thing to have happened.”

Williams-Duncan even gave a history lesson on the Stations of the Cross.

“In the Middle Ages, it was a tradition to travel to Jerusalem, where Jesus had died, and walk the

Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem.

That was considered the ultimate religious pilgrimage for Christians, to go to Jerusalem and walk each of these stations that were throughout the city and pray these prayers,” she said.

Just like today’s coronavirus has called for creativity in getting the Stations of the Cross to the masses, the same was true back in the Middle Ages, Williams-Duncan noted.

“A couple of things started to happen; one plagues and diseases, and two, the Crusades started to happen. It was no longer safe with wars happening in that part of the world for people to travel to Jerusalem,” she said of ancient times. “Instead of traveling to Jerusalem, the great cathedrals in Europe started to set up these visual Stations of the Cross that mirrored all of these places in Jerusalem that you would stop and pray if you were going to walk the end of Jesus’s life. It became this artistic visual pilgrimage that people could do anywhere you were. That is the tradition of the Stations of the Cross.

This set of Stations of the Cross follows that ancient tradition.

Going into more detail, WilliamsDuncan noted: “As always happens in ancient traditions, they’re not exactly literally biblically accurate.

There is one where Jesus is meeting Veronica, the woman who wiped Jesus’s face with a cloth, which actually never occurs in the Scriptures. It’s never been in the Bible, but it always has been in the tradition sense of the Stations of the Cross.

“One of the things that happened in the 1960s was that [Pope] John Paul II renamed a set of Station of the Cross that are completely biblical. So, there is always a question when you’re doing the Stations of the Cross, is this the ancient set of Stations of the Cross or is it the biblically accurate set of Stations of the Cross? This pattern of the Station of the Cross follows the ancient pattern,” WilliamsDuncan noted.

“I called two other creatives that I know really well and what came about was a whole website where all of the Stations, along with the scriptures and the prayers and the musical refrain and meditation, are now available on a website for people who can’t come to Little Fork,” Williams-Duncan said. “It just sort of grew out of people’s desire to have a connection and a way to pray. And we’re going to leave them up through the end of the governor’s order.

“There is one last Resurrection Station that will go up for Easter, a big cross, a resurrected Jesus that will go up for Easter,” she added.

Board seeking to keep tax rate the same

By Pat Fitzgerald For the Culpeper Times Culpeper County residents should not see a tax increase next year after the Board of Supervisors agreed to slash the budget Tuesday in the wake of the coronavirus.

Instead, supervisors are most likely to cut additional funding for schools, pay raises and step increases for county employees, and freeze all hires for the next fiscal year. The Board of Supervisors will continue to work on the budget until early May. After meeting online Tuesday, the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors decided to hold the fiscal 2021 tax rate steady at 62 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

Because of the uncertainty caused by the coronavirus' impact on the economy, supervisors aren't ready to nail down exact budget numbers.

However, the supervisors directed county staff to look into considering a number of scenarios before officially publishing a budget a week before a May 5 public hearing.

According to Culpeper County Administrator John Egertson, the budget calendar originally called for a public hearing on the budget

on April 21, and budget adoption on May 5. However, he said, the state budget won't become clearer until April 22.

He said the county was looking at proposing a $184,740,655 budget for fiscal 2021, which begins July 1. That budget would have no tax increase, he noted, with the realestate tax rate remaining at 62 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

That budget would have included more than $4 million in additional state funding for the schools and approximately $5 million in additional state and federal funding for capital-improvement projects at the airport.

"We had developed a budget; it began all the way back in November, collecting requests from departments and going through the capital improvements plan process and then beginning in the current year a series of different work sessions with the board of the supervisors," Egertson said.

"We had spent a great deal of time looking at health insurance and looking at outside agency requests, salary increases, departmental requests, capital improvement plan and the last meeting, March 12, was the schools' request.

"... Now we can forget about all of that," he said. "I don't want you to forget about all of it, but we have definitely gone back to the drawing board, if that's the right way to characterize it."

As mentioned at school board and supervisors' meetings last month, the increased local spending was being driven largely by a major increase in health insurance for Culpeper County Public Schools and raises for county and school staff.

But, Egertson noted in a presentation to the supervisors on Tuesday morning, "rapidly changing conditions and clear direction from the board has caused staff to find alternative scenarios to a budget that at one time looked fairly solid with just a few board decisions remaining.

The county administrator previously recommended an increase in local funding of about $500,000 for schools. The schools had originally requested an extra $1,477,251. However, Egertson is now recommending that the school system be "flat funded" for fiscal 2021. "However, the decisions you make on the county side should influence thinking on the school side as well, as we seek to be aligned in

health insurance and pay increases to the extent possible," he noted in his online presentation to the supervisors on Tuesday.

County officials have spent the last several days identifying operational expenses which could be cut by the supervisors, and putting capital improvement projects on hold for this fiscal year and fiscal 2021. Each project would be included in the budget, Egertson said, as there are some projects that the board may still wish to proceed with.

Those would be subject to individual appropriation by the board. For fiscal 2021, the county administrator recommends piece-meal funding, at which time the county will reevaluate if the economy improves.

"We've listed pretty much every reasonable operational cut that we could identify," Egertson said. "We were focused on local, true local expenses that are paid for with our local tax dollars.

"Many of the cuts listed are those we would recommend giving the scenario we are in currently," he said. "Some of them we may not recommend, but what we attempted to do was provide some different

Most of the supervisors said they favored a combination of the last two scenarios. "If we can put this [cost-of-living adjustment] off until January, and let's see what happens in the fall if things do start come back around ... I think we could air on the side of caution," said Catalpa District Supervisor Paul Bates.

"Don't get behind the eight-ball here, let's stay out in front of this thing and if things turn around to where we can compensate [county workers] and the unemployment comes back to normalcy, then we can revisit these things."

"There are public-sector people losing jobs, there are businesses that are not going to survive, I am very confident that our local revenue — if we're lucky, it will be done by only $4 million versus the prior year — seeing that, I cannot support budgeting for raises," Salem District Supervisor Tom Underwood said.

"We have to prepare a very detailed advertisement that lays out the funds," the county administrator said. "We need a decision today on what to advertise but you can still make changes up until the adoption date, which we may be looking at May 12 for that."

Egertson's second scenario would see a $3.6 million reduction in locally funded operational cuts, with additional cuts to Airfest ($25,000) and the Culpeper Quarterly publication ($45,000).

And although the RappahannockRapidan Community Services Board would get an extra $66,378, a total of $50,000 would be left on the table. In addition, the sheriff's office would not get its request for 18 new vehicles. A third scenario calls for a reduction of more than $6 million

Northwest Virginia Land Market Strong According to Local Expert Local Land Specialist Chad Pangle is an avid sportsman who has blended his passion for real estate and the outdoors with a career in land sales. Pangle was born and raised in Strasburg, Virginia. He grew up hunting, fishing, and spending time on small family farms throughout his childhood in the Shenandoah Valley where he still resides with his family today.

I’m a seventh-grader at Floyd T. Binns Middle School.

I am currently the treasurer of National Junior Honors Society and was on the cheer squad. I am apart of the youth ministry at Mt. Olive Baptist Church where I serve on the Usher ministry, youth choir also I do praise dancing.

When I decided to join Culpeper Youth it was because my brother Terry was apart of it and I was able to see all the things he was doing and I just knew that this was something

that I wanted to be apart.

Since joining Culpeper Youth, I have been able to help out with many different events throughout the community and so far it’s been great learning experience.

My favorite event that we help out with is the third Thursday concerts. I also enjoy when we do the Teen Talks, which is a great way for all of us to come together and talk about different issues that can be some times hard to discuss.

I love being able to give back to the community and being apart of Culpeper Youth has been an awesome experience so far and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Culpeper Police ask for compliance, but will not demand people's papers In light of Gov. Ralph Northam’s stay-at-home order that was issued last month, the Culpeper Police Department stresses the importance of the order and for all citizens to comply with the order for everyone’s safety to include all first responders and health care professionals during this Covid-19 Pandemic.

Other than the travel exceptions in the order, everyone needs to stay at home and not gather in groups larger than 10 people. The Culpeper Police Department will continue to educate residents, businesses, and others to ensure compliance of the order. If any incident, business opening, or

gathering goes beyond this policy, it will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

The Culpeper Police Department has received information from social media posts and calls from citizens and business owners about a requirement of citizens to have “travel papers” or “travel documents” in possession to travel to their job, grocery store, etc. in compliance with the executive order.

In no way does the executive order nor any guidance received by the Governor’s Office require any resident to have any document in their possession to travel. Thus, the Culpeper Police Department

will not ask any citizen for any type of travel document during an interaction, with the exception what is required by law (driver’s license, vehicle registration, etc.)

The Culpeper Police Department will continue to handle all essential calls of service and conduct traffic stops to ensure public safety during this difficult time for all.

Police ask the community to comply with Gov. Northam’s executive order, recommendations from the CDC and the Virginia Department of Health. Compliance is for everyone's safety, their family’s safety, and the safety of those around them to include first responders and healthcare professionals.

Schools select teachers, classified employees of year All 10 Culpeper County public schools selected a Teacher of the Year and Classified Employee of the Year.

The Phoenix Alternative Education Program also selected a Teacher of the year. Classified Employees of the Year were also chosen from maintenance, transportation, technology, and central office.

The County Teacher of the Year will represent the school division in the 2020-21 Virginia Teacher of the Year competition. This annual program honors teachers who represent the best in teaching in the Commonwealth.

Country Club of Culpeper donates meals In partnership with the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce, the members of the Country Club of Culpeper have donated nearly 600 meals for area workers on the front line of the COVID-19 crisis.

The Country Club of Culpeper has closed its clubhouse except for takeout orders and saw this as an opportunity to do something positive and to help local heroes as well as provide a way to keep their employees working.

“This is a win-win situation,” said Larry Lucas, president of the Board for the Country Club of Culpeper. “People are looking for ways to help the heroes that are risking their health and well being to keep our community healthy and safe. CCC is trying hard to stay open to continue to provide service and value to our members. This program helps with both of those initiatives.

We want to thank the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce for organizing this meal drive.”

Hope amid uncertainty brings strength The greatest foe in our collective battle with this COVID-19 virus is Marshall Conner uncertainty.

Our foe is invisible, contagious and it doesn’t discriminate.

We can’t beat it over the head like a zombie, so it gets us with a handshake, hug or cough. It doesn’t care if you’re good, bad, young, old, rich, poor — it’s just a nasty virus doing what nasty viruses do.

Mankind’s best medical experts are having a hard time predicting where and when it will touch our lives.

Many people are working from home, others choose to wake up earlier and go to work longer by necessity or choice. Together we are all holding fast in a storm.

An increasing number of our fellow citizens are laid-off, furloughed or simply out of a job. Our 2020 calendars are losing plan after plan; vacations, meetings, schedules and events are being crossed out like days on a prisoner’s wall. Our best made plans are simply being erased or at

We count our blessings if we have work or even food.

There are grim reports, statistics and graphs with peaks and hot zones.

The global village is cloaked by the same dark cloud — my friends across the world are all suffering similar anxieties. This is the big messy picture that we are confronting and right now it resembles a Jackson Pollock canvas.

Uncertainty stinks in every human language.

What is the end game? How will it change us? How long will our economy tolerate this? Can it all be restarted like a dead battery? How can our nation keep spending? How can it not? Are our political leaders capable of success or even agreement?

Locked in our houses for preservation we remain hopeful through faith. We also lighten each other’s anxiety with humor. The welltimed laugh is such good medicine.

Let me tell you about the good things I’ve witnessed recently.

I have noticed that there are some inspiring — yet often overlooked — people in our world. The ones manning cash registers, stocking shelves and cleaning stores. There are

tireless people providing healthcare in our hospitals, emergency services, law enforcement, truckers, construction workers, custodians and my colleagues in critical infrastructure childcare. I mention them not out of pride in myself but in my pride of serving alongside them.

Who knew that a grocery cashier and childcare worker would be at the forefront of a pandemic fight? Who knew that moonshine could be crafted into hand sanitizer with a vaguely familiar scent?

Another thing that I’ve noticed is the heightened value of the arts and artists that brighten our world and enhance our lives. Musicians, singers, writers, artists, comedians, poets and journalists are using social media selflessly to connect, help and entertain. So many of us need a few moments of joy.

On Sunday evening my daughter rode an electric hover board around the living room. Her hair was flowing, and our pet Border Collie tracked her movements. My daughter wore a princess dress while blasting Bill Wither's classic “Lean on Me.” The song was brand new to her.

It's funny how that little moment transformed into something greater.

A nine-year-old discovering the healing the power of a song from a man who had just departed this world. This glorious song provides Withers a kind of immortality. I think it would make Bill smile.

I always loved it when World War II veterans would say, “Back then we just accentuated the positive and

worked together — that was the secret.” The Greatest Generation knows the secret to overcoming dark uncertainty.

We are much stronger than we think — we’ve just gone awhile without being tested.

When I see chalk art that reads, “Stay Strong Culpeper” it helps.

When I see people taking the time to look after our most fragile populations it brings hope.

When I see restaurants (also worried about the future) still donating food and feeding customers I am inspired.

When I see masks created by friends or colleague it shows me that we are still capable of having each other’s backs in the bad times. We are only as strong as those who stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us.

Last weekend, as I fly-fished Falmouth Flats on my beloved Rappahannock it was eerily quiet. I only saw a few fishermen and I heard the water. High overhead Eagles and Ospreys were in an aerial dogfight about fishing rights. A shadowy school of Hickory shad—the shinyscaled heralds of spring swirled past my legs. Nature was doing what nature does best, unveiling its beauty, while progressing in cycles.

The river calmed the uncertainty in my impatient soul.

Historically, Culpeper has weathered tough times. It’s just our turn now.

This time of distancing will bring us all closer together once the clouds of uncertainty fade.

Here for a time such as this — mental health amidst an enemy Remember that seemingly age-old instruction, “a Bible apart and Katherine Charapich feet on the floor?”

(Yes, revealing my Baptist upbringing.) That encouragement was intended for those of us in our teenage years.

Now, the instruction is to remain 6 feet apart, wear face masks, and only leave our homes to obtain essential provisions — a message intended for everyone irrespective of age, as COVID-19 is seemingly indiscriminate.

For times such as this. … To my knowledge, there has never been a time such as this. Never did I imagine that a world-wide pandemic would be a consideration regarding our quality of life, lifestyles, and the running of our businesses.

One day our world seemed orderly with the dawn of the next revealing a way of life that had been upended, as well as a fragile infrastructure.

Caught unaware, many of us have improvised by purchasing supplies and being creative with our approaches to work. However, the efforts still don’t feel like enough – leaving one grasping for solutions, or mere comfort.

Jumping right into the heart of this message — with the sphere of what I had known being completely set offkilter by the tentacles of COVID-19, I was having a difficult time attaining a quiet moment of calm. The extra peanut butter, rice, soup, and paper products that now line a portion of my pantry were still not providing the comfort for which I longed.

The threat seems so great, so outof-one’s control, that even though I had been determining solutions, I was left with the disconcerting feeling of a pervasive dread – even fear, that had descended. It felt like overnight, joy was put into a box. Perhaps many of you have been experiencing similar feelings.

As the sun streamed through my windows, the dogwoods are in bloom, the church bells still ring on the hour, and I have an extra roll of paper towels, I found those comforts to be nice; however, insufficient in the face of an enemy such as this virus.

This is not a time to mince words.

As many of you know, my faith is who I am. It is why I do what I do.

I unashamedly share the following — hoping it will help even one. On a recent morning, as my mind tried to process the enormity of what our world, country, and communities

face, I was trying to shake off the “muddiness” that seems to accompany the feeling of not being in control. I affected the one action I knew to do.

In the quietness of a single space, I pictured Christ’s Presence right beside me.

That audience if you will, was the strength I needed, as this enemy in the form of a virus that is present in such a pervasive manner in this very season of Easter, has managed to dominate the airwaves, conversations and our thoughts. It appears that the fluidity of this virus enables few answers.

Maintaining one’s perspective and mental health is so important. Even though there may be some moments where getting from one fifteen-minute interval to the next is the best we can do, if possible, capture a glimpse of a picture, a hope, far greater than a “time interval.”

Esther 4:14 (KJV) shares “... and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

As challenging as many of the moments seem, I am making a concerted effort to take to heart this Easter season, grasp it — catch it, and bring it into the weeks and months of the season we will be facing.

Lyrics in Bethel Music’s song, “Ain’t No Grave,” perfectly captures such a season, “Oh, there was a battle, a war between death and life. And, there on a tree, the Lamb of God was crucified.

And, He went on down to hell, He took back every key. He rose up as a lion and He set all captives free. There ain’t no grave could hold his body down.”

When pantry provisions, the daily news cycle, nor social media provide little comfort due to the scale of the battle taking place, conduct a “mental health moment” by: celebrating the Easter victory, turning off social media for one day, listening to the birds early in the morning, reading a verse or poem, writing, listening to music, or looking at the stars late in the evening.

In addition to maintaining one’s mental health, some are recognizing the fragility of life, that time is precious, and it is prudent to have an estate plan in place.

CONCERNS: The magnitude of this virus is truly bringing to the forefront the importance of having carefully drafted documents, such as a revocable trust, a last will and testament, a power of attorney, and an advance medical directive.

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS: Many estate planning attorneys are holding meetings and document reviews via phone or video

conferencing (using Zoom) until the threat of the virus has dissipated.

PROACTIVE: Take advantage of this time of social distancing to move forward on the drafting of your estate planning documents.

REC offers tips to conserve energy during outbreak While disconnection for nonpayment and related fees are being waived for all Rappahannock Electric Cooperative member-owners during the COVID-19 outbreak, member-owners need to understand that electricity used during this time is not free; meters will still be read and bills will be sent.

During these unprecedented times, REC will work with individual member-owners who need to make long-term payment arrangements as we go through and recover from this crisis.

One of the best things to do now,

is to carefully manage how much electricity is used.

As families spend more time at home, it’s natural that more electricity is being consumed as lights, kitchen appliances and electronics are used more than usual.

REC offers the following tips to reduce energy: • Focus on the thermostat.

During chillier evenings, keep your thermostat set to the lowest temperature comfortable.

REC recommends a setting of 68 degrees or lower. Likewise, on warmer days, set the thermostat to 78 degrees or

the highest setting comfortable for your family.

• Avoid placing lamps, TVs or other large electronics near the thermostat.

• Turn off any lights that are not needed.

• Take shorter showers to reduce the amount of hot water used.

• Consider cooking outside on the grill rather than firing up the stove or oven.

• Unplug any electronics that are not in use.
