H E A LT H Novant taking steps to protect community In recent weeks, COVID-19 has created intense pressure for health systems around the world and across the country.

Novant Health UVA Health System remains in a constant state of readiness for an expected patient surge and continues to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Virginia Department of Health and Virginia Healthcare and Hospital Association during this challenging time.

“Our top priority is to protect the health and safety of our patients, providers, team members and communities,” said Al Pilong, chief executive officer, Novant Health UVA Health System. “We’ve made several key operational changes to increase available bed space, conserve critical resources and maximize our ability to care for our communities.”

Recent changes at Novant Health UVA Health System facilities include the following: • Hospital visitor restrictions and

screenings are in place. Visitation for hospital patients has been restricted, except for laboring mothers and patients who are minors (under age 18).

• Patients have been advised to come to clinics alone, if possible. If visitors are required, only one visitor may accompany each patient in the exam room. Visitors must be healthy and age 13 or older.

• Patients with symptoms (fever, cough and shortness of breath) have been asked to call their provider before visiting a clinic. Providers will set up a care plan to keep others from getting infected/exposed.

• All non-urgent elective surgeries and procedures have been suspended.

However, emergency and essential services continue uninterrupted.

• Novant Health UVA Health System team members who normally work in areas that have been impacted by the reduction of in-person visits and elective procedures are being redeployed to areas needing additional

help to meet the needs of patients.

• Additional licensed bed capacity has been requested for Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Centee, Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center and Novant Health UVA Health System Haymarket Medical Center to respond to the expected patient surge.

• Novant Health UVA Health System team members have readied triage tents outside the health system’s three emergency departments to prepare for an increase in patient volumes.

The tents can be used for potential emergency department overflow, if needed.

• NovantHealthUVA.org/coronavirus has added information to stay up to date on COVID-19 and manage medical care through Novant Health UVA Health System. The site also features a virtual coronavirus screening tool that gives recommendations for care.

• Novant Health UVA Health System is providing virtual options to care for patients at home. Patients can connect

with their provider through online services to receive minor diagnoses, prescriptions and professional advice.

Patients seeking care at Novant Health UVA Health System hospitals and clinics can request a video visit or e-visit through MyChart. Patients that have had care at Culpeper Medical Center are encouraged to sign up for MyHealthConnection or call their provider’s office to discuss virtual options that may be available.

“We’re grateful for the outpouring of support that our organization continues to receive,” Pilong said.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their continued support and partnership as we work to bring the best of health to our communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Mount Lebanon Baptist awaiting new home

By Amy Wagner Contributing Writer Mount Lebanon Baptist Church will have a new home in Culpeper five months from now.

Founded in 1833, the congregation of Mount Lebanon has worshipped and offered fellowship in a building significantly smaller than the new building of 19,000 square feet being constructed just 3 miles closer to Culpeper.

The land was purchased 10 years. Construction is taking place just down Sperryville Pike over the Rappahannock line, where the groundbreaking occurred Nov. 10, 2019. Preparing the site, breaking ground and beginning construction has been on the radar for 16 years, during the previous pastor’s tutelage. When he left, he put the plans on hold, so the church would not incur debt.

Pastor Steve Harrelson came on board five years ago and has turned on the green light ever since. “We are growing,” he said.

Average attendance on Sundays, for both services, is 230. The church has activities and groups for all ages, “using every single square inch of current space,” said Harrelson, who added that the college and career age groups are the strongest.

In the aftermath of going to daylight saving time, spring was on the doorstep.

Sports teams were practicing, festivals were being planned, professional baseball was starting, families were looking forward to a school break, and others were just happy to be outside walking and doing yard work. The daily routine of work, school, travel, social gatherings and recreation were going as usual. And just like that, it all changed.

We became acquainted with a new term, COVID-19, the coronavirus.

This invisible menace which started in Asia, spread to Europe and now engulfing the United States, was causing sickness and death across the world. Because of its ascendance, we were now told to practice “social distancing,” and to “stay in place.”

The aftermath included closed business, closed schools. job losses, no physical, public worship and a run on grocery stores for toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizing products and other items. Hoping that the health pandemic would not cause an economic crash, our government has had to intervene with stimulus and support. And as we long for more testing, ventilators and face shields, we revere the heroics of our healthcare professionals, first responders, grocery workers and those on the front lines risking their own health to care for others in need. It just seemed to happen so fast.

No wonder there is fear. Fear of the virus. Fear for our loved ones.

Fear of not having the money to pay for a mortgage, rent and food. Fear of isolation and loneliness. Fear that our retirement savings is dwindling. Fear of the unknown. Fear that our way of life will never be the same again.

While fear is real and needs to be expressed, we certainly don’t have to allow it to dominate and overwhelm us, do we? Just ask God.

In Isaiah 41:10 it is written, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Instead of focusing on fear and grief, how about hope?

During this crisis, I am seeing the hope of Jesus all around us. I see hope when people are reaching out to their neighbors by calling, texting, emailing and visiting. I see hope when individuals are willing to serve older adults by running errands and getting groceries. I see hope when families are talking, forgiving and spending time with one another. I see hope when free lunches are being provided for children in need. I see hope when local businesses are being supported.

I see hope when meals and day care are offered to our first responders and their families. I see hope when people are reading the Bible and praying. I see hope when individuals are generous, giving, gentle and encouraging.

Hope is contagious, especially in these difficult times. It is pure light shining in the darkness. When it comes to attitudes, there is that illustration of a glass which is half

filled with liquid.

Some who tend to be positive might say that the glass is half full. Some who tend to be pessimistic might say that the glass is half empty. Here is how I would like us to respond. That we’re glad and excited that there is just something in the glass! And that’s the gift of hope which Christ is offering us through this crisis.

Yes, its inconvenient. Yes, it’s scary.

Yes, it came like a thief in the night and changed our living. But its fear cannot be our focus. We have Jesus Christ, the hope of the world. So, let us be open to a new recording in our hearts, souls and mind. Yes, we are going to get through. Yes, we are going to come back stronger. And yes, God is with us and he is going to help us.

As it says in Deuteronomy 31:6 — “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord our God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

➤ Church, from Page 3 to COVID-19 restrictions but had to do so from a member’s home in Culpeper. “Not being able to live stream from the church is driving everyone crazy,” said Harrelson, acknowledging how greatly improved telecommunication will be in the new location. “We need to be a Biblical church in the 21st century. We have technological needs.”

The new site has been home for the church’s Easter sunrise services every year for the past 75 years. Despite ongoing construction, this year is no exception. With the current pandemic, however, the format has been changed.

“We want people to come to the sunrise service but stay in their cars. Service will be led from the hillside beside the footprint and, much like the Christmas light shows, people can tune their radio to a particular station and an echo transmitter will be used to share the service.” This year’s sunrise service will begin at 6:15 a.m.

Harrelson said the congregation is eager to move into the new facility, which sits on 22 acres.

A vision team is being created to pray over how to best utilize all the acreage. Standing recently at the new site, Harrelson pointed all around. “The sanctuary will be here,” he said indicating space to the left. “The fellowship hall will be right here,” he said, pointing to the right of the same space.

Standing next to the elevator shaft, he glances behind to where the family life center will be constructed.

A large conference room will also be created in the new building. In that room, many of the historic furniture pieces from the current building will be displayed, including memorial plaques and

the name plates from the original stained-glass windows.

Harrelson is not sure what will happen to the old building after the congregation moves and is praying that a Hispanic or Korean church might want it.

“Worshipping God and making disciples here and around the world, “ that’s the purpose of the church, said Harrelson. A pavilion, already constructed, sits further back on the property where the congregation holds multiple functions throughout the year.

Salvation Army has many supplies available The Salvation Army’s food pantry is providing free toilet paper, sanitizer, rice, whole potatoes, and much more. Many of these items have been absent from local store shelves, but these items are available while supplies last, for anyone in need.

The Salvation Army pantries provide free food and commodities to clients one on one. This method is especially helpful to those who would like to avoid large crowds.

While the COVID-19 coronavirus continues to spread across the region, many people — especially those among the older population — are needing access to information and resources more than ever.

That’s where Aging Together, a 20-yearold organization, is helping out.

“One of the biggest things Aging Together is trying to do, because we don’t do direct services but we are about trying to connect people, is update our resource list on COVID-19,” said Ellen Phipps, the group’s executive director. “We’re trying to get that through faith communities, through law enforcement, we posted it on Facebook.

We’re just trying to get it out to everybody and drive people to our website as well.”

“If you’re a healthy older adult, here’s what you need to know. You need to be reminded about everything from the health department, what the CDC is saying about taking precautions, but also here are some ways you can keep busy and stay active, connecting with families and friends and how important that is,” she said. “[Aging Tomorrow is] just helping people to know what help is out there and what’s available.”

During this time of crisis, for example, religious communities are stepping up with offers of food, grab-and-go programs and deliveries of other vital needs for seniors and others. “We’re working right now to try and get all of this good information in one place on our website.”

That website can be accessed at www. agingtogether.org.

“We are just going to get the information from the local health department, from the local resources, CDC, and we’re going to tell people this is where you can go for [more] information, this is where you can go if you need to get food right now, this is where you can go if you need to know what’s happening with volunteer transportation right now, here are some activities you can do at home if you’re really bored,” Phipps said. “That’s what we’re trying to do.”

While Aging Together does not provide direct services, it serves as a clearinghouse where other nonprofits and government agencies can some together and share ideas, and where anyone in need can find a central place for resources.

“We realize the immense concern for the safety and wellness of the older adult population right now, especially because the largest percentage of deaths from the COVID virus are age 70 and above,” Phipps said. “We have developed a temporary coalition of regional professionals who meet via weekly webinars to determine priorities and action plans that help lower the risk

to older adults while keeping them from feeling anxiety and isolation.”

The outcome of having a coalition like this is to remove some of the confusion about how to help people while ensuring they remain at home or within assisted living facilities, she said.

Isolation is one of the biggest concerns, as it leads to depression, confusion, anxiety and Phipps loneliness.

“There’s something about I’m choosing to be by myself, but I know if I really want to see somebody they can come over or I can go there,” Phipps said. “Just knowing that you can’t, that’s really hard.”

To battle that, Phipps said she’s looking into a grant to get Grandpads, a userfriendly tablet for seniors. “It’s like an iPad for older adults. You can get this app that’s just easy to navigate and you can connect with family or you can see pictures and do different things. We’re looking at possibly getting some grant funding to possible distribute those.”

Aging Together’s newly formed coalition met for the first time last week, and the response was enormous, Phipps said. She said Aging Together will regularly share resources and programs that are outcomes from this coalition, as well as contact information for existing agencies that are responding with emergency needs such as food delivery, transportation to doctors’ appointments, and other necessities.

“Aging Together does not provide direct services but is implemental in connecting people to services and resources that help, as well as forming partnerships to resolve issues,” she said. “We encourage people to check our website, social media sites, or call our number and leave a message. One can also ask to be placed on our email news list which has a frequent distribution to keep up with changes and news.”

That was Aging Together’s mission from the start. “We really a very broad spectrum of different agencies that partner and join with us. How they attend to do that is through every month we have volunteer team meetings in each of these five counties,” Phipps said. “What we do is sit at the table and we hear from the people who have their finger on the pulse, what are the gaps in services.

“One of the big gaps in services, for example, is education and support to family caregivers. People who are taking care of an older adult, maybe one with dementia,” she said. “The Aging Together team would come together and maybe plan for a caregiver workshop, for example. In fact, we have one coming up on Friday, which fortunately we scheduled as a webinar.”

Culpeper business community comes together How can we help?

Throughout this new reality we’ve faced due to the COVID-19 response, that’s the one question we’ve received the most — how can we help?

Culpeper is a caring community.

While we navigate uncharted waters, our residents are thinking about those who are less fortunate, about the small businesses that are affected by the social distancing and our nonprofits that need extra attention.

We’ve been helping organize distribution of donations to Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center from several organizations.

The Ole Country Store, Cub Scout Pack 550 and Girl Scout Troop 3126, The Country Club of Culpeper, Operation First Response, Culpeper Mid-Day Lions Club, Chick-Fil-A and

individuals have made generous donations of food to help our health care professionals who are facing this pandemic on the front lines. It’s been heartwarming and overwhelming to see the support given.

Last week, our friend Hemal Gandi of Microtel Inn and Suites in Culpeper, generously donated hundreds of rolls of toilet paper that we helped distribute to the Culpeper Food Closet and the Salvation Army of Culpeper. What was even more heartwarming is when we called local churches offering to make a drop-off, they immediately directed us to those two organizations as they help the neediest in our community. The giving knows no bounds.

Kash Imprints has come up with an innovative way to help businesses and nonprofits, while providing residents with a cool way to continue to promote those organizations when we return to a sense of normalcy.

VIEWS Newspapers are in full force for our local businesses

Small and medium local businesses are truly the backbone of our communities. For hundreds of years, local newspapers have had a partnership with the local business community of which we are part.

Virginia businesses like the rest of the country have come to a screeching halt and are feeling the loss of their customer base every day. Virginia Press Association members and their sales teams are working closely with businesses to help them with ideas to change their messaging during difficult times, or to simply remind citizens of their long-standing relevance to the communities they serve. It’s not just about promoting products and services that residents have come to expect from local businesses, it’s more about the contributions that these businesses bring to their communities as they have woven themselves into the fabric of the local economy.

Restaurants have been asked to close and are unsure when patrons will pass through their doors once again. Downtown storefronts, including the many mom-and-pop operations that

It’s probably safe to say that many people in Culpeper didn’t vote for her. But, given Spanberger’s accomplishments and her positions on the important issues facing us, it’s clear we should return her to Congress for another term.

She is a strong supporter of the Affordable Care Act and believes that every American should have access to medical care without fear of financial ruin. In this time of coronavirus awareness, it’s worth considering that today the ACA insures millions more Americans than would have

• Visit your favorite local retail store’s website, purchase gift cards for yourself and others to keep some money flowing to their bottom lines.

• Support a community gym and take virtual online yoga/fitness classes.

• Buy gift cards from hair and nail salons, restaurants and bars, and other local businesses we want to

be there for us once the crisis has passed.

• If you shop online for things you’ll need while in selfquarantine, make these purchases from the websites of local businesses. Some may still deliver to you.

When you visit the websites of your favorite local businesses, please notice that many are offering discounts or telling their customers how they can assist.

Many businesses are getting creative and changing their commercial models already to offer services remotely or shipping their merchandise to their customers.

Our 175 newspaper members are proud to be essential business partners for the Commonwealth. Our wish – like yours – is that we can return to a somewhat more normal life soon.

Until then, if you’re a business owner, let your local daily or weekly newspaper help you get your message out. If you’re a loyal reader, support your local businesses in any way you can right now. Be well. Be safe.

had insurance before it. That means more people will feel comfortable about seeking early medical attention during these stressful times.

Spanberger is a true independent: a political centrist who believes in fiscal responsibility and a strong national defense. She has worked across party lines to achieve win-win outcomes for all Americans regardless of which party they voted for. Her experience in Federal law enforcement and for the CIA has given her a breadth of foreign policy experience not found in more senior politicians. And experience should count; the current administration’s poor handling of the covid-19 pandemic is a good demonstration of that.

Spanberger supports USMCA, and has called for a strong immigration policy that will deal fairly with

the dreamers and the millions of immigrants who work hard, obey the law, and pay taxes.

Spanberger understands that climate change is real. She wants to help Virginia harness its abundance of potential wind and solar power, both to provide free energy and to promote growth of jobs in the renewable energy sector. She is working to expand broadband internet access to underserved rural areas like Culpeper County. The coronavirus outbreak has shown how crucial broadband access can be for students and businesses.

Spanberger is a smart and independent legislator. We need to keep her on our team.

It wasn’t supposed to end like this.

This year was suppose to be year of many lasts. Last prom, last football game, last homecoming and much more Recently, we got the news that schools will remain closed till the end of the academic year. With that news our hearts dropped, we won’t get our senior night, senior field trip, one last senior class picture, a proper goodbye to classmates that we may never get to see again, or even a graduation.

Since ninth grade we have been looking forwards to these activities and it hurts to not experience them. We understand everything that is going on with COVID-19 and how this is a necessary precaution to keep us

safe but we are still hurt by the decision.

Be thankful for all of the memories we have for the past 12 years and cherish them. Be thankful for the teachers who always pushed us and help motivate us. Be thankful for the coaches who always has our backs and pushed us to succeed.

Be thankful for friends who made us laugh during times we were down. Be thankful for all the parents who were your transportation to many games, who stayed up late to help finish projects, and always help relieve any anxiety.

Lastly, be thankful for the administration they have dedicated time to make sure we are safe and well taken care of.

Overall, there is a lot to be thankful for, it’s best to remember the positive during theses time because positivity outweighs negativity.

Health district reports first coronavirus-related death in area The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District is reporting its first death of a hospitalized patient who previously tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19.

The patient was a woman in her 80’s with chronic medical conditions whose close contacts were previously investigated. The cause of death was respiratory failure as a result of COVID-19.

“This is a tragic loss and our hearts go out to her family and friends,” said Dr. Wade Kartchner, RappahannockRapidan Health Director. “This most

recent death, along with the increasing numbers of coronavirus cases we are seeing, is a reminder that we all need to be diligent in doing our part to help slow the spread of virus in the community.

Most commonly, symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Symptoms generally appear within 14 days of being exposed to a person infected with the virus.

COVID-19 spreads primarily through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

To decrease the potential for the virus to be transmitted, the Rappahannock-

Rapidan Health District recommends: • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use alcohol-based sanitizer only if soap and water is not available.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Cover our mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects or surfaces.

• Practice social distancing by staying six feet or more away from others.

• If you are mildly sick with a fever, stay home unless you need medical care. Call

your healthcare provider prior to going to their office.

• Avoid non-essential travel, public gatherings, particularly if you have chronic medical conditions at any age, pregnant, or are elderly.

• Call your healthcare provider if you have concerns about COVID-19 and your underlying condition or if you develop a fever, new or worsening cough.

The weekly Culpeper Times, the largest circulation newspaper in Culpeper, Va., is seeking its next great Editor. Located just 70 miles from Washington, DC, Culpeper County is a mix of rural and suburban with a thriving “small town” downtown. It’s filled with interesting people and great stories.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic journalist with experience to write everything from local government issues stories to features. Reporting and writing are at the forefront of the job. While the Times has a network of freelance contributors, the editor should enjoy being in the community, cultivating — and producing — multiple stories every week.

Grymes students learning remotely The global pandemic has suspended Grymes Memorial School classes on campus, but joyful learning continues in creative and meaningful ways.

Since returning from spring break, Grymes teachers and students have engaged in a new remote learning program. Students now work from home, and teachers lead the way by focusing on core essentials while also providing a range of enrichment opportunities across the various subject areas.

Online platforms have been effective vehicles for communication and conveying course content. Direct support from teachers, whether through the internet or telephone calls, has worked to deepen relationships

and guide students in their progress.

Almost overnight teachers worked to put together a purposeful program that prioritizes the fundamentals of learning, including reading, writing and mathematics, and expands opportunities to grow in unconventional ways. Lessons and materials have encouraged students to work independently, in addition to inspiring them to explore areas of interest and hone important academic and personal skills.

Whether crafting a sentence for a paragraph, solving a math problem, participating in a virtual discussion, or creating a field guide for their back yard, students are learning in both new and old ways.
