LOCAL NEWS Annual deputies vs. teachers game full of laughs

The Scott H. Jenkins Youth Sports Benefit Basketball Game between the "Deputies vs. Teachers" took place at Culpeper County High School last Friday evening. Organized by the Culpeper County Sheriff's office, all proceeds from the game will go towards the annual Youth Summer Sports Camps that they sponsor. The evening consisted of fun activities that incorporated the spectators with a kick off Tug of War game. The main event, the teachers vs. deputies game, was action packed with the teachers ultimately winning, 62-42. Women In Worship Ministries 'EXCEL' nominations open Women in Worship (WIW) Ministries is pleased to announce the 2019 “EXCEL” Honors are OPEN for NOMINATIONS. After the Nominations process is completed and the 2019 Honorees have been named, a Honors Luncheon will be held on October 26, 2019, at the Daniel Center, Culpeper, VA. Nominations are open through June 1, 2019.

Recipients will be recognized at the local, regional, and national levels for their outstanding achievements in areas such as International government, Education/Administration, Women’s History and Business/ Entrepreneur., etc. The public is invited to celebrate the occasion with the Honorees to be announced later in the summer.

In addition, 10 young women and girls will be recognized during the ceremony as “Generation NEXT”. Please see the website www.womeninworshipministries. org on how to nominate someone.

With being a non-profit organization, there is always stipulations about views and opinions. The Youth Advisory Council has heard it all, whether it be that we “must be politically biased” or that we “must be religiously affiliated” because we meet in a church. The truth is, we use the resources we have been provided with and we keep other business matters out of this organization. Although many of our members are involved in the political scene, especially the vice president, Culpeper Youth and the YAC have never subjected that upon the members and our events. We focus solely on the importance of bettering the community, and all of our interests are in relation to bringing youth involvement to Culpeper. We frequently get questions such as “well what IS your mission after all?” and “how do you all have any clue how to run things?” Culpeper Youth is a non profit organization that gives Culpeper’s youth a voice in the community. Whether it be through events and projects, or spitballing future ideas for consideration at a meeting, each member works incredibly hard to ensure a great future for this organization. The Youth Advisory Council uses their meetings to create the master plan, molding the events that we take part of. The organization members then as a whole use that framework to execute the plan and set it in motion. Not a minute of our time is ever wasted. And being a part of Culpeper Youth doesn’t stop at meetings and events, it continues everyday. Our members are dedicated to helping within the community in many aspects of their lives. They use their free time to send emails and make connections, expand their networks. They recruit new members both in school and during out of school clubs. They showcase their Culpeper Youth pins proudly in hopes that it will reach others. We advocate, we strategize, we execute. We do it for the community, we do it for the youth.

'Sisters of Shanktown' celebrate birthdays

In the past 107 years there have been two World Wars, the Great Depression, social unrest and 19 Presidents.

Laura Hoffman has seen them all.

On Saturday, the Reva resident celebrated her birthday with someone who can remember almost all of those same events her sister Dolly Berry.

Laura, who will be 107, danced as she walked into the Reva Fire Hall arm-in-arm with her younger sister Dolly Berry, who just turned 105.

The two centenarians celebrated their birthdays in front of more than 300 family and friends - hugging family members and greeting well-wishers with a loving and still firm grip.

When Hoffman was born on March 26, 1912, William Taft was President, World War I was still two years away and the first television airing was 15 years away.

Sitting at the table reserved for the “Reva Divas,” Laura smiled, clapped and danced as her family surrounded her - posing for photos and stories with their grandma, great grandma and even great-great grandma.

What’s the secret to her and her sister’s long life?

“God is my secret, he’s the only one that keeps me here,” Laura said. “God could have done took me a long time ago.”

Her life was a typical one of African-Americans of that day and age. She was born on a farm in rural Culpeper County to Burnett and Sallie Shanks Booten, She was the third youngest of 10 children, her younger sister Dolly was born March 7, 2014. Dolly moved to New York to live with an aunt when she was 13, but later purchased a home in Culpeper County and splits her time between the two states.

According to a column written in 2012 when Laura met President Barack Obama - by her longtime friend Zann Nelson, Hoffman and her siblings were “raised in a community populated by tenant farmers like her father though most of the others were white. Her memories are filled with tales of the neighborhood children all coming to Aunt Sallie’s house to play, eat and sleep over if need be.”

“Colored men and women were not addressed as Mr. or Mrs., but my mother was known to the white children as Aunt Sallie, it was their way of respecting her,” Hoffman said.

She dreamed of an advanced education, but unfortunately her father became ill with heart trouble and she turned to a life of domestic work. She moved to Washington, D.C. for two years to experience the big city life but moved back to Culpeper to marry Jesse Hoffman. The couple raised five children together before Jesse passed away ➤ See Hoffman, Page 7

Nelson, a local historian, isn’t sure that there have ever been two siblings 107 and 105 before.

“I think it’s unprecedented,” Nelson said.

“There are a few people who have reached 107 and a few older than that, but two siblings? Think about it, they’re combined ages are 212 years. It’s stunning to think about what they have experienced in that time.”

Laura’s daughter Liz said her mother is still sharp and full of spunk.

“I don’t wish for that age,” Liz said laughing. “No money in the world could get me to wish for that. “She’s sharp enough that she can still fool you.”

Dolly is just as sharp, though partially blind. Her daughter Joan Montgomery attributes her mother and aunts long life to their lifestyle.

“They lived clean lives,” Montgomery said. “They believed in nature, they believe in the teas that came from the Earth. If someone got sick, they knew how to get the

bark and help heal them.”

“They eat from the garden, they are garden people,” Liz said.

Their family has grown - Liz looked around the room and estimated that the family now numbers close to 400.

“It’s a large family,” Liz said. “This is five generations.”

Despite having some many kin, the Hoffman family is tight.

“I give that to grandma Sallie,” Liz said.

“That bond they have, that sealed it. They taught family values. My grandmother was one awesome person.”

Sallie Booten passed away when she 87.

Her daughters have long outlasted that remarkable age.

“I’m going to be gone and they’re still going to be here,” Liz said with a laugh.

“They’re strong women,” Montgomery said. “They have the sanity of their minds.”

What is the legacy that Laura and her sister will be remembered for?

“Laura’s legacy is a vision of what life lived with all kinds of obstacles can be,” Nelson said.

“Growing up in this kind of church, it’s just nice to have this group of kids that can get together and do things they enjoy,” Upton said.

“I’ve seen LEGOS be a huge part of things that people love to do. It’s just a

fun way to get together.”

She’s a member of Journey - the oldest group of Awana. They play games for about half an hour before going through different books of the Bible.

“It is a lot of fun for me,” Upton said.

“Growing up here I’ve made some of my best friends through the church, it’s a really uplifting church for me.”

amount of content that was being tracked from programs I watched and the type of ads I was being served. This caught my attention because I had just purchased a brand new 42-inch, 4K, TCL Roku TV for just over $200. And as you can guess, one of the reasons that the TV is this cheap is that ad companies subsidize it. The remote is hardcoded with buttons for specific services paid by these companies.

Unfortunately, I can’t change how they are programmed.

So, down the rabbit hole I went.

I spent hours researching how ad systems functioned for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Your large online web services such as YouTube have built their own ad delivery system. Most smaller websites integrate ad delivery from 3rd party websites that are invisible to you.

And a lot of services are designed to load ads before the main content of a web page. It’s one of the reasons some web pages load slower.

I have used a 3rd party tool for my web browser called, uBlock Origin, to cut down on the ads on my computer for a while. Now, I was ready to see what was happening with the other devices on my network and I came across a new tool I had to give a try: Pi-hole.

Pi-hole is a free, open source program that runs on an inexpensive $30 computer called a Raspberry Pi. Let me be clear that this is highly technical to implement, as you will need a pretty good understanding of command line operating systems, TCP/IP, DNS, and caching. It’s easier than manually looking at my firewall or using another free tool, Wireshark.

Pi-hole integrates the Cloudflare DNS service and incorporates total ad blocking before it hits devices on your network. If a device requests an ad on the internet, Pi-hole checks

the online ad blacklist websites and stops it cold.

It’s not 100% effective, since YouTube has their own ad services and this device cannot block those without blocking all of YouTube. The good thing is that it will stop ads from places that integrate 3rd party services. Now, instead, I see blank white spots on web pages or on my smart tv where an ad used to be.

Since many video or images ads aren’t loading, I also save bandwidth. Imagine if you could save some bandwidth on your mobile hotspot by blocking video and image ads.

It was after forcing all my devices to use Pi-hole that I saw how often the TV “phoned home”. My TV shoots out a request every 30 seconds, which is equivalent to 66% of all requests out to the internet.

Pi-hole blocks those requests. Now shooting out a request doesn’t equal bandwidth, but for some reason, the TV is programed to stay in constant contact with the parent company and I have the log files to prove it.

I’ve read numerous ideas around this level of “phoning home”. The most common response was lazy programming. If lazy programming is the cause, that leads to more privacy and security concerns.

Some parts of me hope it’s more deliberate, but this isn’t limited to smart TVs, as it can be anything connected to the internet.

Before you go buy that next cool gadget that uses the internet, do a little research on what it may track and any known security issues with the company.

HISTORY Zann's secret academic life Zann has been keeping a secret.

Last August I enrolled in a degree program at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. No, no, I have not lost my mind, just the opposite, I have found more of it!

Frankly, I did not tell the world earlier, because I was not sure how well I would fare. Now that I have cleared almost two semesters and 27 credits/hours and am on the Chancellor’s List with a 3.9 GPA, I am pretty sure I will make it to the finish line.

It has been grueling, fascinating and all-consuming. All the courses - four in the Fall and five this Spring- have all been online; I have yet to set foot on the campus. However, the support from the

professors and the administration has been amazing. In addition to the course material, it has been a challenging but rewarding task to master new technology. We are required to write several discussion posts on assigned topics every week and then respond to our classmates. You probably can guess that I am the oldest student … and not by just a small margin. It isn’t that our viewpoints are that different, but our frames of reference are miles apart. Nonetheless, every part of this adventure contributes to a fabulous experience. If you don’t find it too boring, I will share some of the challenges as well as some of the interesting perspectives. I will be taking classes through the summer and again next Fall with the anticipation of completing all requirements for graduation by December of 2019, otherwise, it will be May of 2020. I am being advised to seek more after this completion, but we shall see.

My studies are concentrated in two areas: Communications and Peace and Conflict Studies; difficult to address one without the other!

Let me tell you about the technology.

Hangouts, Google Slides, videos presentations, live video chats are all second nature to my student cohorts.

Not so much for Zann, but then I am not a neophyte either and most willing to ask for help. The biggest problem I have is that I suck at texting; my product looks more like hieroglyphics!

Several of our assignments require a video presentation. We must look professional, the background needs to not detract or distract and we generally are asked to stand. We can use notes, but the professor does not want to see them. What? How does one do that especially while standing? From my own experience in giving talks, the answer is a podium or a teleprompter and I have no access to either. In a previous presentation, I was criticized

(nicely) for shuffling my notes. I needed a podium, but I could not afford to purchase one. Hmmm? Could I make one? There were several cardboard boxes on the parch- I have been decluttering- and I picked one about fourteen inches in height. After staring at it for some time, I cut down the sides so that the top could be slanted, left a lip where the papers could rest, and spray painted it black. Voila’! It was perfect. No one could see my papers and on the slant at the designed height, I was able to refer to them without looking down or shuffling. One of the peer reviewers commented that having the podium made my presentation look very professional. If they only knew!

It's finally reaching spring!

Nurseries are brimming with new plants, soil temps are steady and warm and moisture is plentiful.

Everything needed to get your lawn growing is right at your fingertips.

I am often asked 'what's the secret to a beautiful yard'.

The secret is quality materials, start at the right time of year and know what you're up against.

The first step is always to get a soil test, you can't fix it if you don't know what's broken. Second you have to decide if you're going to be fighting weeds this year or installing new grass. These two cannot usually be done effectively at the same time so don't go grab two bags of pre emergent

weed and feed and a bag of grass seed from Lowes and hope to fix the lawn.

Truth is the weed and feed will most probably just kill your new grass seed.

Instead lets concentrate on getting the desirable grass strong and new grass growing. We can battle weeds at all times of year but establishing new lawn is best in spring.

To take a soil test get large zip lock bag and a claw hammer with about a 3" claw. Use the claw portion of the hammer to pull plugs of soil from at least 15 different locations or one plug per 1k square feet, then mix soil up and bring it to a place like CFC by Wal-Mart to have it tested. This test results will let you know exactly what your lawn will need. Once you know what your lawn needs you can choose a fertilizer that meets those needs.

Choose a slow release fertilizer that matches the required nutrients and spread just before a rain to maximize your investment. The three main

Spring finally begins?

Although spring just officially starts March 20, here in Virginia the season usually arrives earlier — but not this year.

Wood frogs were among the species that got a late start breeding this year.

Finally, on Feb. 28, Lyt Wood, director of Rapp Nature Camp, reported wood frogs calling in a small pool at his house, along the Hazel River near Sperryville.

But even a few intermittent warm days were not enough to get the frogs started breeding where I live. They typically do start later than at Lyt’s, because of the higher elevation and location deep in the woods, but haven’t really gotten going yet.

On March 10, while my brother, Dana, was visiting from Alaska, we found one lone wood frog at the pond in the woods above my house. No other wood frogs were in site there, or in an old concrete trout tank below the dam — the main breeding sites here for wood frogs and spotted salamanders, which breed at the same time of year.

I injured my foot the next day, so we didn’t get up to the ponds. The day after that, on the way to taking Dana to Dulles for his return flight, we visited Leopold's Preserve, near Haymarket. We hoped that, in that open area at lower elevation, we might see more signs of spring.

The last time I’d been at the preserve, in 2016, the water levels in the wetland on the western side had been low, but last year’s torrential rains had apparently raised those levels considerably. The trail that looped through part of that wetland had substantial water on both sides of it.

As we got onto the trail, we could hear spring peepers calling — the first time I’d heard any frogs this year.

Peepers usually start breeding later than wood frogs, and I have no idea if the latter breed on the preserve, but plenty of peepers were, judging by the din we heard. For their tiny size, peepers are extraordinarily loud but elusive. Many times I’ve been just a few feet away from ones that are calling but have rarely seen any. I finally did spot one little head poking up out of the water that day, but by the time I’d gotten my camera out of my pack, it had disappeared.

On the west side of the trail, where the most water is, we found a lot of

What do these do for your lawn you ask? Well, nitrogen promotes new growth in the blade of the grass and aids in photosynthesis, Phosphorus is important for healthy root development and Potassium helps your lawn stand strong against drought.

Choosing a quality grass seed is absolutely necessary if you want to have a beautiful lawn. Choose a seed mix designed for our region and your specific needs.

We prefer to use Blends of fescue.

My top choice for grass seed is 'Winning Colors. This is a blend of 4 top rated fescue seeds with a 0.00 % weed seed, 0.00% Other crop seed, 0.46% inert matter and a 90% germination rate. Winning Colors will grow in shade and sun handles heat as well as the cool it is applied at 4lbs per 1k square feet for over seeding and

8lb per 1k square feet on new lawns.

As far as I know we are the only local supplier of Winning colors. We do also use Southern Lawn, Southern Lawn shade, and Southern Lawn extreme when conditions warrant them.

Southern Lawn blends can be found at our nursery and the Co-op down by the train depot. These blends have been blended specifically to work in our regions. Probably not something you're going to be able to find in the box stores.

If it's needed be sure you purchase high quality compost and preferably not animal or straw compost. Often time’s animal and straw compost will have live weed seed in the material. I recommend using leaf compost with a ph around 7, blended with our local soils it creates a fantastic seed bed.

stumps of small trees, apparently gnawed by beavers. Looking out over the wetland, we saw a large beaver lodge, along with a few pairs of Canada geese and a couple of ducks. After dropping my brother off at the airport, I headed home, hearing more peepers in Fauquier County, but none after I crossed into Rappahannock County.

Checking the upper pond that evening, I still found no frogs. However, I did notice many globular egg masses of spotted salamanders attached to the submerged limbs of several small trees that were blown down into the pond during last year’s fierce windstorms. Apparently, the chilly weather didn’t deter the salamanders, which breed at night.

On March 14, temps rose into the high 60s. Sitting outside with my dog, I enjoyed the warm breeze that was blowing, bringing a storm of sycamore seeds raining down from the sky. An eastern comma butterfly flew by, heading into the woods. Other insects activated by the warm weather were flying or crawling around everywhere in the yard..

I checked the amphibian breeding sites up the mountain again that afternoon and finally heard a few wood frogs calling. I saw a few wood frogs jump off the bank of the pond as I walked around it, and I could see about half a dozen more swimming around in the water. They just starting to congregate, so no eggs yet. Last

year dozens of frogs left masses of eggs up there, raising a racket with their courting calls that I could hear down at my house.

With temps soaring to near 80 degrees the next afternoon, spring peepers started calling in several areas in the hollow. Giving my foot a break, I skipped a trip back up to the pond.

Around the yard, the warmer weather had ramped up the songs and calls of birds, including eastern phoebes, which had left for most of the winter.

The next day, the temps plunged and stillness once again reigned. On Tuesday (March 19), just before I filed this column, I checked the upper pond and tank once more. The ambient temperature was hovering just above 40 degrees, and water striders were the only things moving up there; no sight or sound of frogs, and no frog egg masses.

But spring is now underway, with spicebush and red maples budding. SUMMER CAMPS Homeschoolers learn at Art Jam Drawing Academy ➤ Culpeper Parks and Rec met needs for class, will offer summer camp

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer K Art and Design buzzed Tuesday afternoon as visitors checked out artwork from the Culpeper County Parks and Rec Department Art Jam Drawing Academy Class.

The class, offered to homeschool students in Culpeper County, taught

by Kelly and Tony Rowzadowski of K Art and Design, was offered to students ages 6-10.

“I’ve always requests from homeschooled classes, it’s just finding the instructors that are available during the day,” Culpeper County Parks and Rec Programs & Facilities Supervisor Tabitha Riley said. “Kelly is

one of those available, so she does it every session and gears it toward a different subject.”

The class maxes out at 10 students and this eight-class group consisted of nine registered students - many of which who have signed up for the color academy being offered beginning April 2.

“I get a lot of requests, I do my best to fulfill them,” Riley said. “I’m always looking for new instructors.

You do not have to have a teaching background to teach it, you just have to be able to communicate well.”

Both of Erin Brown’s daughters have taken the class in the past, though 10-year-old Molly Brown was the one signed up this time.

“I just liked the different kinds of art we did,” Molly Brown said.

“We love Miss Kelly and Mr. Tony, we really love our time with them,” Erin Brown said. “The girls learn a lot and they are both extremely supportive. There’s a wonderful relationship built there. I look forward to it each time and I’m grateful it’s offered more than one time a year.”

For the Rowzadowskis, the class is an opportunity to connect the joy they feel with the excitement of the students.

“It’s wonderful, they come in so excited about things that when they leave Tony and I are still buzzing with the energy,” Rowzadowski said.

“I’m just so grateful to have the opportunity to work with them. We loved it at their age and we love being able to share it with them.”

This class they worked with students on lines, shadows and texture, and used some paint to talk about color. They even broke out charcoal for students to use.

“We thought that would be a good way for them to learn value,” Rowzadowski said.

She said that she enjoys being able to teach homeschoolers, because many parents have expressed worry that they wouldn’t be able to teach art because they aren’t artistic themselves.

“I think for many parents that if they aren’t artistically inclined themselves they are very intimidated to share it with their kids,” Rozwadowski said. “I think for a lot of them it took the pressure off.”

The Color Academy begins April 2 and runs through May 28. Register

Salvation Army's Camp Happyland provides life lessons Children living in poverty face many problems during the summer months. They are at greater risk of hunger insecurity because they do not have access to school cafeterias.

They are at greater risk for injury or getting into trouble because adults are more likely to be unattended during the day. They are more likely to experience isolation and poor health because they stay in-doors.

Camp offers a powerful solution to these problems. A summer camp provides meals, counselors, and a new group of friends.

A study by the American Camping Association indicates that long term life changes occur in children who attend summer camp. The study “Youth Development Outcomes in the Camp Experience” examines 5,000 families from over 80 ACA- accredited camps, exploring changes is four key areas: Positive Identity; Social Skills; Physical and Thinking Skills; and Positive Values and Spirituality. Results show that children typically experience growth in all four areas, even long after the camp experience was over.

The Salvation Army has long believed in the power of summer camps, which is why we operate 45 camps throughout the United States.

Campers participate in activities including swimming, arts and crafts, music lessons, sports, dance, hiking, wilderness camping, boating, fishing, Bible study, and much more. Many kids who attend these camps have never experienced anything like it in their lives. And nearly all of them walk away with invaluable life and social skills that give them hope for a brighter future.

Camp Happyland is no average campground. We own two ponds, a river, pool, nature center, climbing wall, sports fields, and cabins and activity buildings with utilities; all stretched out on 635 acres of beautiful woodland. 75 employees worked together to serve 968 children last year. Some children attended twice, resulting in 1288 weeks of camp provided for children out of a maximum capacity of 1352 weeks possible. Salvation Army officers from all over Virginia and Washington DC spend a full week of camp duty every year in order to ensure the highest possible quality of program. Happyland invests a budget of about 1.7 million a year into children.

Our local plan is to broadcast an invitation to camp far and wide so that as many kids as possible are able to take advantage of this tre-

mendous opportunity. Our most important partnership for connecting with children will be the Boys and Girls Club. We will send flyers to children’s parents and then our social worker will go on-site to sign up kids when the parents come over several evenings. We will also extend an invitation to the client families who have received Salvation Army services through Angel Tree, food pantry, and utilities assistance.

We will place information in the newspaper and advertise it at our family stores, e-mail blast, texting our volunteer base and email blasts through Partners for Community Resources and Healthy Culpeper.

With this communications plan, we

hope to sign up 60 children for Camp Happyland. This represents a significant increase over the 34 local children we sent to Happyland in 2017.

We will provide transportation to camp on Monday and back on Saturday. There are several weeks available so that families can choose the best time for them. There are different camps every week, starting June 17 and ending July 27. These unique camps offer a broad range of options, such as sports camp, leadership, wilderness camping, and badge work similar to Boy Scouts. The age range of each camp is different, but depending on the camp, we invite children starting at age 6 up to teenagers at age 17.

CONCERT• The Barclay Brass ensemble will perform in the sanctuary of Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S. West Street, Culpeper, at 4 p.m. Barclay Brass is a premier ensemble comprised of some of Washington DC’s top brass musicians.

They have performed with leading military bands, major symphonies and are in demand as freelancers all over the country. From the Pope to the President, members of the Barclay Brass have performed for some of the highest profile officials and ceremonies.

These musicians created the Barclay Brass for the opportunity to perform a wide variety of classical music arranged specifically for brass instruments. For almost a decade, they have performed diverse genres of music – from patriotic and classical to ceremonial and seasonal – for audiences of all ages. In 2017, Barclay Brass was part of “The Force at 40,” the 40th anniversary celebration of the release of Star Wars, which was held at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. A wellness check on your estate plan ESTATE STEWARDSHIP

“I’m not looking for a fair fight!”

The statement has in my Katherine Charapich resonated mind throughout these last two weeks and I agree; I’m not looking for a “fair fight.” Indeed, I’m not, nor I would hope are you.

Living life purposefully is an incredible focus.

Exploring the implications, the layers, and the variations in one sitting, or in a lifetime of sittings, is just not feasible. I share there is one aspect of this life that I know I have gotten right – at least for me, from my perspective. My faith is that. I claim that victory - trusting, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”

Romans 8:31 NIV There are no promises that such a faith will make this life easy, in fact, there are days that life may be so much more challenging. I am okay with that; I believe the ultimate score is in my favor.

As I age, I have gotten better at assessing whether I am living life purposefully, a goal being to become more disciplined in the service provided and the witness affected. It is a work in progress. I think of it as a wellness check. Such an assessment works well in most areas of one’s life, including planning for your care while you are on this earth, the use of your assets for your benefit, and the ease of distribution of those assets upon your passing.

As an estate planning attorney, I encourage clients to ask pointed questions about the estate planning documents they have in place, such as a trust, a last will and testament, a power of attorney, an advance medical directive, and an operating agreement if they own interests in an LLC. Such estate planning tools are made available within the Code of Virginia enabling you to protect and to plan ahead. The goal in having estate planning documents in place is to not leave any loose ends, to have affected the appropriate level of risk management.

Have you done a wellness check on your estate planning documents lately? The following are questions you may want to ask regarding your estate planning documents as you assess whether they meet your needs and intents.

When may you need your revocable trust modified?

Questions: Does an adult child, who may be a named beneficiary in your trust, lack the capacity to manage money or has the potential to carry a large amount of debt? Are you concerned that your adult child may face marital challenges? Have your named successor trustees become estranged from you?

Have you only named one successor trustee? Does the language in your trust create by-pass trusts upon your death

that accounts for the Federal Estate Tax Exemption when the exemption was at a much lower level than the current level? Do you want to name different beneficiaries? Do you want to leave a specific bequest to a person or charity?

Have you made provisions for your pets?

Do you want to consider the inclusion of Trust Protector language?

Considerations: Using revocable trusts effectively and properly funding such trusts can mean that your real property (land and land with improvements), your tangible personal property (the physical items you can touch), and your intangible personal property (cash, savings, and wealth management) may pass outside of the probate process.

Have you properly funded your revocable trust?

Questions: Have you transferred your real property into your trust? Have you assigned your business interests into your trust? Are the assets in your cash and savings accounts held by your trust?

Are the appropriate assets in your wealth management portfolio owned by your trust? Is your tangible personal property held by your trust?

Considerations: That “initial $10 funding” into a revocable trust at establishment of the trust does not do much good after spending the time and resources just to discover upon one’s incapacitation or death that the funded value is $10.

Is your Last Will and Testament comprehensive enough to meet your intents?

Questions: Does the language in your Last Will and Testament consider to whom an asset will transfer if your named beneficiary fails to survive you?

Have you named successor Executors?

Have you included guardianship language in the event you die and leave behind minor children? Do you have a specific bequest you would like to include? Is it possible that one of your beneficiaries may have special needs and be in receipt of means tested government funding, and the inclusion of special needs trust language should be considered? Have you entered into a pre-nuptial or post-nuptial agreement and the respective document is not referenced in your Last Will and Testament?

Considerations: In addition to reviewing your Last Will and Testament, a conversation with your banker and financial advisor may be helpful as you examine each cash, savings, and wealth management account to make sure the interests are held as you expect, and that if not held by a trust you have named primary and contingent beneficiaries.

Is your Power of Attorney comprehensive?

Questions: Does your power of attorney give your agent the authorities

necessary to help you? Is your power of attorney effective when you may need the help the most? Have you named successor agents? Do you trust the agents you have named? Does your agent have the authority to affect longterm care planning for you?

Considerations: Keep in mind, that if you do not have a power of attorney in place, the alternative you leave for family, friends, or even a stranger is a petition for guardianship of your person and conservatorship of your estate.

Does your Advance Medical Directive reflect your wishes?

Questions: Does your advance medical directive set forth the medical care that would be acceptable to you in the event you are unable to make a medical decision for yourself? Does your advance medical directive sufficiently address your end-of-life wishes? Have you named individuals as an agent and successor agents who have enough courage to advocate for your wishes?

Considerations: Using an advance medical directive helps you set the parameters for your medical care and end-of-life wishes. An advance medical directive allows you to select who has the authority to make decisions on your behalf.

The same document may also help remove the guilt from the one making such decisions because the actions taken were based on your memorialized wishes.

If you own an interest in an LLC, does the Operating Agreement for your LLC include protections for your interests?

Questions: Have you maintained the decision-making authority? How do you maintain control of your LLC even in the event of accepting a capital infusion in the nature of an investor?

Do you have a right of first refusal on interests held by others so that the interests of the company you built do not become attenuated upon their deaths?

Have you planned for the possibility of your incapacitation so that you may still benefit from a stream of revenue? Do you want your company to continue after your death?

Considerations: You worked hard to make your LLC successful. A welldrafted operating agreement provides means to maintain control even when you are no longer able to manage your interests.

Wellness Check Action If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, it may be an indication that having a conversation with your estate planning attorney that includes a discussion about the “wellness check” of your estate planning documents will be well worth the time invested.

Estate planning is not meant to be about a “fair fight.” Estate planning is designed so that if you take advantage of it, there should be no fight at all.

The entire world is at war, and it doesn’t matter who’s winning because everyone is losing.

And there aren’t any “good guys”, but there is at least one faction that wants to appear to be ‘good guys.” They want to restore some of the priceless art that has been so casually defaced in the orgy of destruction. Then, whoever is left alive, can be consoled that at least the victors cared about what is important to humanity.

That, at least, is what I think this odd piece by Heather McDonald is about. “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, an unwieldy mouthful of a title, signals the ambitious ninety minutes now playing in Signature’s Ark Theatre.

The playing space is naturally intimate as we sit within feet of the actors, a configuration designed to make us feel integrally involved in the dystopian world before us.

Playing through April 7 itself on us before it even begins.

Gritty shadows and hanging wires, a shattered statue, and piles of trash and bits of paper litter the space. We will contribute to the paper mess when Holly Twyford, welcoming us to her world, asks us to write on a bit of paper that one thing we would grab if we had only twenty minutes between life and sure destruction.

Directed by Nadia Tass, the real strength of this show is in the performances of the cast of three women.

Their artistry alone is the draw.

A military jailor (Felicia Curry), a refugee pretending to be a nurse, (Yesenia Iglesias) and an art restorer (Holly Twyford) are trapped in the dirty twilight of a shattered art museum, their purposes completely at odds with one another.

The soldier, though she initially has the power, is under the power of others who threaten her with her life if she doesn’t achieve her mission. The art restorer, tortured and battered, has been commanded to repair a priceless Rembrandt, but she has a broken arm and no tools or supplies. There are no politics here; the soldier represents the enemy only in the sense that the enemy is the one that destroys priceless art. And the nurse, a member of some opposite faction, wants only to escape to find her daughter.

How far will they go to get what they want – or avoid what they don’t want? How important is one Rembrandt painting of “The Two Marys” to the future of the reigning military faction? How important to the art restorer? And when is murder the correct answer to the question of finding your child lost in a world gone mad?

The story is improbable at best, and the symbolism of the “Two Marys” a little too obvious, but the tooth and claw fight-for-their-lives is played for pure truth, and the conflict arc between the soldier and restorer (Curry and Twyford) once the power shifts is a strong piece of theatre work.

McDonald must have wanted to offer at least a glimmer of hope in this

Together, haltingly, they might be able to repair a formerly enduring symbol of civilization as civilization itself collapses around them.

Bringing the beginning around to the end, Twyford delves through scraps of paper on the floor for more answers to the question of what should be saved when all else will be destroyed. While this play itself doesn’t merit such inclusion, the question it asks deserves at least a few moments pondering.

Culpeper Young Life is partnering with JK Enterprise to kick off their annual Mulch Madness Fundraiser. This mulch is premium quality, double-shredded, hardwood dark much and black mulch. Students sell mulch by the 2 and 3 CU FT bag at competitive prices, and deliver it themselves, with the help of willing adult volunteers. It's a way for them to raise money to go to Young Life camp by providing a quality product and the sweat-equity of free delivery.

Culpeper Young Life is a Christian ministry that values faith, friendship, and fun. Young Life leaders are actively investing time with students in Culpeper County high schools and middle schools to build lasting friendships and to help them live life to the fullest. Young Life is serious about adventure. Young Life’s summer camps are a testament to that.

On Sunday, March 10, the first lady Marvis Baker Pitts and the ladies of Beulah Baptist Church of Rixeyville were guest speakers at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Culpeper. Where they honored the African American Women in the Military from the past to the future with over 100 people attended.

During the ceremony, the Beulah’s ladies read how during the Civil War, while getting paid from the Union Army to raise cotton on plantations for the northern government to sell cotton, the black women’s services included nursing or domestic chores in medical settings, laundering and cooking for the soldiers.

Following World War II, racial and gender discrimination, as well as segregation persisted in the military.

Entry quotas and segregation in the WAC deterred many from re-entry between 1946 and 1947. President Truman eliminated the issues of segregation, quotas and discrimination in armed forces by signing Executive

In 1970, Margaret E. Bailey became the first black female promoted to colonel in the Army Corp.

In 1972, Mildred C. Kelly became the first black female sergeant major in the Army.

In 1979, Brigadier General Hazel W. Johnson-Brown became woman general officer and the first black chief of the Army Nurse Corps.

In 1995, Brigadier General Marcelite Harris, United States Air Force became the first black woman to attain this rank.

In 1997, United States Army Sergeant Danyell Wilson became the first black woman to earn the prestigious job of guarding the Tomb of Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery.

At the closing of the ceremony, first lady Marvis Pitts saluted all the women of the military. The ladies of Beulah received a standing ovation from the congregation. All those who attended were impressed with the knowledge that they received from a well-organized and thoughtful ceremony in honoring our African American women in the military from the past to the future.
