ulpeper County is full of treasures. Twice a year, we like to pull back the curtain on some of the businesses, people and areas in the county that many may not know about and tell their stories.

In this issue of Treasures, we visited Culpeper's antique and vintage shops - exploring deep inside what they have to offer, why they started and how have they thrived for as long as they have.

This project started after taking some visitors down to the MinuteMan Mini Mall and having them marvel at the wide array of items available there. Realizing that Culpeper has a multitude of antique dealers very similar to them, I decided to grab photographer Ian Chini and go do some 'tiquing.

continued to amaze me that almost all of them had one thing in common - they started between 25 and 27 years ago.

What was it about the time in the early 1990s that led to people wanting to open antique shops, and why do people keep coming back to buy items at them?

In one word - nostalgia.

By the time the 90s rolled around, the hippy heyday of the 60s was long gone, the carefree disco ridden 70s were fading into the limelight and the decadence of the 80s had left people with disposable income. What's the best way to relive your glory days? By buying the stuff you might have seen in catalogs or admired at a friends house but never had the extra scratch to purchase.

With every store Ian and I walked into, I'd catch myself turning around wide-eyed and exclaiming - "My mom had this," or "I remember this from my Grandma's house."

memories I had long surpressed of sitting on my Mom's sunporch on a warm summer day in Northwestern Pennsylvania, the sunlight reflecting in different colors off the antique pieces she would store in there.

It's not a unique personal experience - we encountered many folks digging through the treasures at the antique shops exclaiming the same things.

They remembered the old English china, which their grandmother would store in the very top of the hutch so the kids wouldn't break it.

Inside Country Shoppes of Culpeper there were old toys that made remember playing with my much older brothers hand me downs - the old block phone you pulled with a string, a Cookie Monster piano and the see and say clock that made animal noises.

There were things that I forgot that existed - Marilyn Monroe dolls, random sports figurines from the early 1990s, hand planers that I vividly recall hanging in my grandfather's basement.

Then there were items I never heard of and never knew that existed.

Inside Quail of the Wood in downtown Culpeper, who would have thought you'd find a Victorian era coin purse made out of a paw of an alligator, or find a Seminole war club, used to bash away at enemies of the tribe.

The whole experience was surreal in a good way, it makes you realize that they old saying of "there's something for everyone," truly applies to antique shops in Culpeper.

Our travels for this issue also took us deep in the bowels of the Library of Congress' Packard Campus - an area that is still filled with intrigue in the area.

Deep inside the government building visitors - touring the facility back in October - found classic films

meticulously preserved by an expert group of employees who have an unmatched passion for the medium for which they care for.

We heard amazing stories of Hollywood's yesteryear and saw how nitrate films are carefully stored and restored - keeping the memories of the early 20th century alive.

Finally, we chat with Culpeper County librarian Susan Keller about the momentus 20th anniversary of the Culpeper County Library at its

current location.

There's nothing quite like sitting down with a good book - especially one that you didn't have to pay for.

However, the advent of technology seems to be making that a lost art so we get to the bottom of how a community library stays relevant and how times have changes in the past 20 years.

So I hope you enjoy our trips down the aisles and through the years, it really was something.

MinuteMan Minimall has it all Vendors provide a glimpse into the past with a wide-variety of offerings

MinuteMan Mini Mall has you covered.

The iconic antique store truly has something for everyone. Located at 746 Germanna Hwy, the 22,000 square foot building houses 187 vendors and 175 booths filled with an item for every whim.

Into cosplay? There’s a booth for that.

Like to collect Civil War antiques? There’s a vendor with a booth for that.

Trying to find a Marilyn Monroe Barbie doll? They’ve got it.

Do you like old doors, door knobs or window frames? Primitive is in and MinuteMan has it all. Literally.

Manager Dawn Walton explained the store opened on May 1, 1991 by original owner Edwin Reeves Jr. with four vendors and a train room. Reeves was well known for his love of Lionel trains and would entertain visitors with his set up. He passed away in Dec. 2010 and his daughter Wanda now owns the operation.

They lease out 5x8 sized booths at $2.50 per square foot, charging approximately $100 a month for a six month commitment. The vendors keep the inventory in check while the staff at the minimall sells the products. Each booth has a three letter code assigned to it so the staff knows exactly what they’ve selling.

“Everybody finds something,” Walton said. “It’s very rare you see somebody leave without something.”

Antiques, primitives, architecture, industrial items, vintage home decor, movies, books, art, collectibles, crafts, homemade jewelry - you name it, MinuteMan sells it.

Despite being in the same location for more than 25 years, Walton said that some in town still marvel that the mini mall exists.

“Believe it or not we have people who live in Culpeper and come in and they’ve thought it was some kind of warehouse,” Walton said. “They’ll say they can’t believe this is what it is.”

A sign posted along U.S. 29 has helped educate and attract visitors, and they have a steady stream of regulars who stop in to see what’s new.

Vendors and the staff work hand-in-hand to find new items, utilizing a bulletin board to find a particular item a customer may have requested.

“We work with everybody on trying to find things,” Walton said.

Customers also can help identify items. One vendor wasn’t sure what she even had, displaying a primitive block of wood that had hinges on it so the wood would “clap” together.

She even marked it “what is it” on the tag.

A few days later, a customer came in and said “I know exactly what it is.” Turns out, it’s an early 20th century noisemaker that scares off birds.

Yep, a little bit of everything.

“These come from old homes they are tearing down, and the vendors buy it,” Walton said. “The younger generation likes this type of iron, the old metal cabinets. We try to find things the younger generation can repurpose.”

“It’s amazing what people buy.”

The weekends are the busiest times, as customers come in from out of town - mainly from Northern Virginia. Many are quickly attracted to the Attic, an area of the store where the staff sets up several items from different vendors, to help give an idea on how to possibly decorate your home. They also feature a vendor of the month on Facebook, taking pictures of that vendor’s wares and the vendor offers special sales on different items.

“We have a lot of people ask if we have something on social media,” Walton said.

“We’ve sold a lot of their items through Facebook.”

The vendors are loyal, all happy to have a place to call home to host their business.

Ellie Scarola, of Locust Grove, has been a vendor for more than five years. She thought about opening her own business but was afraid of all the extra costs associated with it. Having a booth and still being able to sell her floral arrangements, handmade soaps and home decor has been a perfect answer.

“This is the best of both worlds,” she said one recent Monday, while rearranging items from the weekend.

“They really take care of us,” she said. “If we’re not here and somebody has a question, they call us. It’s an amazing place to have a business. I just love it here.”

“It’s unique,” Walton said, pointing to the pair of Wolverine's claws. “People hear about it through word of mouth, that’s the best advertisement.”

Country Shoppes of Culpeper celebrates 25 years Store offers a little bit of everything

Country Shoppes will be a quarter century old this year.

The longtime antique and collectibles store along U.S. 29, owned

by Lois Alperstein, has weathered the economic storm by keeping regulars coming back and attracting travelers visiting from Charlottesville and Washington, D.C. The 17,000 square foot store features more than 100 dealers that offer antiques, collectibles, primitives, jewelry, Civil War pieces and much more.

Walking into the store, customers are greeted by manager Terri Crawford with a friendly “good morning,” and then they are immersed in a cavalcade of collectibles.

On your left are baseball and football cards, directly in front of you are primitives and home decor and the offerings just grow as you walk through the store. It’s the dealers who search out unique items that keep the store thriving.

“We still have some original dealers from the beginning,” Crawford said. “They rent the spaces from us. We give them a dealer code and everything that comes up front, we take care of.”

Reeves helped the couple get the business going. Alperstein and her husband had collected for years and have been up and down the East Coast scouting, so setting up shop in Culpeper only made sense. The business has grown over the years, thanks to the work of the vendors, Alperstein said.

“I expanded the store the last several years, took an additional 1,500 square feet,” Alperstein said. “We’ve really had a lot of vendors for a very long time. A lot of them have stayed with us for a while, they are exceedingly loyal to us. We are very grateful for that.”

The longtime customers, obviously, have played a big role as well.

“We always thank them for being part of the Country Shoppes family,” Alperstein said.

She credits the staff, two full-timers and four to five part timers, for their dedication to customer service.

“We have an amazing staff who are on top of their game, and are very friendly,” Alperstein said.

She can’t believe that it’s been 25 years.

“I keep pinching myself, that this is absurd,” Alperstein said.

“This wasn’t a whim, but close to it in a way. I’ve really enjoyed it.”

pull to the past that keeps people coming back. Crawford said it’s normal for people to walk in and exclaim “I remember my mom or grandma having this.”

“The love for antiques and collectibles is still strong,” Crawford said.

Over 25 years, the styles people have looked for have changed from country to vintage - but people still want that connection to their past and they love to collect.

There’s been thousands of pieces come through their doors over the years, many unique furniture pieces and Civil War finds that the dealer digs up himself.

“You never know what he’s going to find,” Crawford said.

In the Civil War and military booth, now sits a pair of artillery shells - certainly a conversation piece.

Regulars stop in once or twice a week, knowing that the vendors constantly find something new.

“They know the dealers are always changing out their booth,” Crawford said. “They come in and do their walk through.”

Crawford said it’s fun to meet all the families that come in through the door.

The store is open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. On May 12, there will be a spring event celebrating their 25 years of existence and on Dec. 1 will be their annual Christmas open house.

Crawford said that it’s been a team effort to be able to celebrate 25 years.

“Through the recession, a lot of antiques closed up and we’re still thriving,” Crawford said. “It’s a testament to our dealers, to our loyal customers. It’s a combination of everything.”

and buy that stuff the next day,” Settle said. “Then we have people who stop by and say, I have this stuff in my garage. We buy stuff every day.”

Slindy’s opened 27 years ago in downtown Fredericksburg by two ladies named Sandy and Linda - hence the name.

The store is a treasure trove of new and used goods - from books, to glassware, to small appliances, to the aforementioned furniture.

“Sometimes we find things that we don’t know what they are,” Settle said. “Sometimes we’ll find things and leave them out on the counter with a little note. We learn a lot from our customers.”

On a recent day, a customer walked out with a piece of the Liberty Bowling Alley in Fredericksburg, ready to turn it into a countertop.

“One of the strangest things that happened was we picked up a flower vase and it felt like it had rocks in in,” Settle said with a laugh. “We dumped it out and it has costume jewelry in it. You wouldn't think you’d find a flower vase with jewelry in it. You just never know.”

A majority of the customers are looking for pieces they can make their own.

“We want things will stand up to time and refinishing,” Settle said. “A lot of our customers come in looking for things they can repurpose.”

The 5,000 square foot building has knick knacks, costume jewelry and a military surplus room.

Unlike many thrift stores, they don’t carry clothing or shoes - unless it’s in the military room.

One of the more unique items in the store is a concrete mermaid, part of a collection by Roger Corbin. He makes the cement figures and is selling the mermaid for $30. A display outside has snowmen, candy canes, trucks and fish all made out of molds and many hand painted by him.

“They’re just fun to build and I like to see people’s reaction to them,” Corbin said.

Settle said she just enjoys meeting people and helping them find something special.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Settle said.

Slindy’s hosts a yard sale the first Saturday of the month and hosted a fall flea market in October. They’ll offer a spring flea market Saturday, April 7 and are still looking for vendors.

Fox Den Antiques relives the past

here’s the old saying “they don’t make it like they used to,” and that’s why Fox Den Antiques and Collectibles is here.

Diane Newman, whose family owns J.D. Newman Trucking Co., has been in the area for 39 years and dealing in antiques for more than 20. A few years ago she decided to expand her booth that she had at Country Shoppes of Culpeper, and moved into the space right beside them at 10044 James Madison Hwy. “When this became available, I decided to rent and expand,” Newman said.

Her collection comes from auctions, pickers and items she’s hung onto throughout the years, including times where she would travel to antique shows.

“I’ve accumulated it over the years, I’ve got storage filled with stuff,” Newman said with a laugh.

Her store is filled with sturdy antique furniture - tables, chairs, couches, hutches and more. All harken back to a time where there was pride taken in the craftsmanship.

and glassware that made back then, that you’re not going to find today,” Newman said. “This stuff lasts.”

She specializes in primitives and antiques.

As soon as you walk in the door there’s a set of vintage Virginia mugs, a pair of colonial Virginians smiling to welcome you.

She keeps it as local as possible - mentioning that she just got a vintage chicken coop from Madison in.

Furniture is her best seller, with rare items appearing weekly.

“I’ve had a lot of rare stuff that’s come through,” Newman said.

She has a steady stream of regulars, in addition to the traffic she attracts off U.S. 29.

“People are into all sorts of stuff,” Newman said.

She deals in old English China, glassware, hedgewood and other collectibles such as Hummel figurines.

“People that come in, come back because of the quality,” Newman said. “We have affordable pricing.”

Folks from Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland - who have second homes or vacation spots in the area - regularly stop in.

There’s also a market for props - with production companies stopping by frequently searching for period pieces.

The store is open Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

And despite opening up her own shop, she maintains her booth at the Country Shoppes.

“I promised them I wouldn’t leave,” she said with a laugh.

There’s plenty of quality to go around.

Quail at the Wood Antiques is full of oddities D

id you know you could see something from the era of 57-935 BC in Culpeper?

Walk into Quail at the Wood Antiques and oddities such as a bowl from Korea or a 11th century Buddha stand out.

Sarah Hays has always had an eye for the unique. An appraiser as well as an antique dealer, her affinity for the strange has made for many a conversation piece coming through her door at 205 N. Main St. Quirky items - an alligator’s paw coin purse, a smiling Buddha, a Seminole war club, an ancient Chinese oil container - those are what catches Haynes eye.

She lovingly and jokingly refers to herself as a “magpie” - shiny items appeal to her.

Walking through the store is like walking through a museum.

There’s a late 19th century air pump made in New York - used either for tires or for providing air for shallow divers working on a pier.

On a table sits the alligator paw coin purse - a real sign of wealth in the Victorian era.

“It’s grotesque to us now, but if you put it in the context of the Victorian era, that was the era of discovery in the Southern hemisphere,” Hays said. “On Saturday nights, if you lived in a city that had a lecture series, you’d take your best girl to a science lecture. It’s a reflection of the socioeconomic developments of the time, which all antiques all. They reflect on what’s going on at that time.”

In one cabinet sits a plethora of Buddha’s reflecting on Hays time when she lived in Asia. She still visits and has a great affinity for the area.

A Victorian-era alligator paw coin purse, a bowl dating to 57-935 BC and a women's antique hair brush are some of the unique finds at Quail of the Wood Antiques.

On another shelf sits the Seminole war club - it’s rough exterior sporting a beak-like protruding spike.

“If they didn’t kill someone with this, it would leave a gash that would lead to death,” Hays explained, caressing the club. “They didn’t have antibiotics then.”

Her unique finds attract repeat customers from up and down the East Coast. Residents of Washington, D.C., New York, the New England area and even as far south as Florida return to purchase her marvels.

She specializes in silver, oriental items, early Virginia and MidAtlantic items.

“I find most of my things out of the state,” Hays said.

She also does appraisals, and often finds items of great value when people don’t even realize it.

“People who have inherited a household full of stuff, they need an appraiser because a lot of times they don’t know what they have,” Hays said.

“Of course, if I’ve appraised, then I can’t buy. If it goes to auction,

She not too long ago appraised a piece of French art glass for more than $5,000 - it was stuck in the back of a curio cabinet.

“They obviously didn’t know what it was, because it had been there for a long time,” Hays said.

But she keeps coming back to unique items, pointing out the Chinese oil vessel which has been repurposed throughout the years.

“People want things because they are beautiful and maybe they’re a little different from what someone down the street has,” Hays said.

She sits, polishing silver, smiling at the beauty of the pieces.

“Elegance is being maintained in the south,” Hays said, pointing out many of her customers searching for the silver pieces come hunting for unique wedding items.

a constant stream of new items.”

She has a collection that she swaps out by the season, and sadly she’s not looking to add to it at the moment, though she always gets people stopping by hoping to sell their collection to her.

She said she’s seen people trying to reconnect with a certain era, with the 1970s being popular once again.

“People are looking for a specific era,” Parody said. “There’s a lot of people who want the 1930s and 40s. I have a lot of people looking for 1970s bell bottoms or peace signs. Some of the stuff I’ve seen walk out of here are my tie dye pieces.”

The desire to go back to simpler times seems to be the pull, but also the pride of craftsmanship that those eras also elicited seem to help.

“It’s a testament to how well things were made,” Parody said.

She sells a lot of costume jewelry and says it’s not just sentimental value,

but that the function that it offers.

In Culpeper since 2015, she has seen an influx in business since she moved to Main Street. She had prior locations on East Davis and East streets, but said that the visibility on Main has led to more foot traffic.

“We’re trying to populate Main Street now because there’s such a great breadth of commercial space here,” Parody said. “The exposure I’ve gotten here blows me away. I’ve had people coming in that never knew I was in town.”

Just having people stop in and meet her has helped.

“Foot traffic and word of mouth is critical,” Parody said. “Part of it is ambiance. Part of it is discussion with customers. It’s so fun.”

Galleria on Davis Street continues to grow

onnie Cole has always dabbled in antiques.

The owner of Galleria on Davis Street offers gifts, antiques and used books at reasonable prices. She took over the space after serving as a vendor in the location and it’s just grown ever since.

“I came by the door one day and it said vendors wanted,” Cole said. “So I rented a space, and it’s just grown. Now I have the whole thing.”

Nostalgia is what keeps people coming through the door. Antique glassware, paintings, china, silver harken back to a simpler time - one everyone can relate to.

“So many of them come in and say ‘oh my mother had that, or my grandmother had that,’ you hear that all the time,” Cole said.

Her two biggest sellers are artwork and lamps.

There’s much more than that in the store, with unique offerings like a large replica sailboat sitting on top of an antique hutch.

“We price things according to what we pay for them,” Cole said. “We want them to go out the door.”

Cole says that she finds her items at auctions and estate sales and often has people stopping in to see if she would want to buy their antiques.

“We get something everyday,” Cole said.

Regulars are the lifeblood of the business, and she guesses she sees at least 70 percent of people on a weekly basis. The others are tourists, who come to East Davis Street to walk around and stop in to find a special trinket. She’s had several unique paintings,

and people clearly have a favorite.

“They like anything with animals,” Cole said.

She used to have a booth at the Country Shoppes of Culpeper, but moved uptown when she saw the sign for vendors.

“I went there when the building was practically one big room, and they took a piece of blue painters tape and said this is your spot,” Cole said with a laugh.

She used to have a booth in the back of her current location but quickly moved up front and then took over the whole area. Looking around the 1,8000 square foot space, she admits that it’s a lot of work, but she enjoys finding new treasures to share with people.

“That’s the fun part,” Cole said.

Double J's sees something new every day

oug and Becky Jenkins were sad with Clark Hardware closed a year ago.

So they decided they would open their own store to fill the void, carrying antiques, collectibles, project pieces, some new products - such as Red Rider Wagons - Double J's held its ribbon cutting Sept. 30.

They want to bring personal service back to helping their customers, helping them find that special treasure.

Everyday, it’s something different.

“One day everyone’s looking for furniture,” Becky said one recent Friday, helping a couple check out with some shoes for a job interview.

“Another they are looking for toys. It runs the whole gamut.”

A lot of people are looking to repurpose antique and vintage items, using chalk paint to give the wood a true “rustic” feel.

They have their fair share of unique items coming through the door earlier in the week someone came by with three cow milker stations.

In addition to second-hand items, they have brand new toys like the Red Rider Wagons and John Deere tractors.

“We have a little bit of everything,” Becky said.

There are dolls, Precious Moments figurines, Barbies, holiday items and a wooden man cave sign - an eclectic offering.

She had one person come in and purchase old wooden step ladders - with the plan to use them as display areas for her Christmas house collection.

“We have a lot of regulars,” Becky said.

Culpeper County Library celebrates 20 years

Internet was in its infancy when library moved to current home

lot has changed in 20 years.

Just ask Culpeper County Public Library Director Susan Keller.

The library celebrates 20 years in its current location at 271 Southgate Shopping Center March 23, and Keller has been around the whole time to see how the library has evolved in that time.

The Culpeper Library was organized in 1926 through the efforts of Lucille Nelson Penniman and Mary Williams Tucker. Miss Crimora Waite was appointed the first official librarian and served in that capacity for over 50 years. In 1963 the first library building was constructed and served as home to the Culpeper Town and County Library. In 1996 the library became an agency of the County of Culpeper and plans were made to construct the new library, with the official opening being hosted March 23, 1998.

Technology is the first thought that pops into her head, remembering the size of the server that was first used in 1998.

“We joked about how much they put in for a computer system,” Keller said. “I can remember when they wheeled in the server. A phone has more memory than our server did 20 year ago, but we were state-of-the22 | spring/summer 2018 | Treasures of Culpeper

art at the time.”

Culpeper County Library was the first library in Virginia that had a web page and they were the recipients of four Internet computers through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Now, the library has 16 Internet computers, 16 iPad stations and wireless Internet.

“Wireless wasn’t a thought in anyone’s mind in 1998,” Keller said.

Technology also helps people access the library and the services it provides - event though many wouldn’t realize it.

Did you know you can borrow a book from the library on your Kindle or iPad? Keller explained that as long as you have a library card, you can use a program called Overdrive for audio and ebooks. They will be downloaded to your device for two weeks and there’s no late fees - they just go away when the subscription period is up.

“They can still go online and borrow them for free,” Keller said.

“It takes a little more work because Amazon makes you work for it if it’s free. A lot of people still don’t realize that’s available.”

She says between 1,000 and 2,000 books and audiobooks are checked out online and Culpeper and Winchester were two of the first libraries to form an online consortium for books.

While that’s a convenience for people who can search for books from the comfort of their own home, Keller points out there are still a large number of county residents who don’t have access to Internet at their homes.

The library can be a home away from home for them, and she says that they average between 300 to 400 people utilizing the library’s WiFi daily.

“On holidays, people will sit in the parking lot to pick up the Internet,” Keller said.

Something for everyone It’s not just books and access to Internet that the

library offers, there are a multitude of programs offered that keep people coming through the doors.

Keller mentioned a lecture and program on backyard birds and how to care for them as an example.

“That’s the joy of being a public library, anything can be of interest to us,” Keller said.

One of the more popular programs are the teen programs, ranging from groups that play board games together to a teen leadership group. While they have grown up all their lives with Internet and online interaction, many teens still crave the feel of a good book.

“The teens have determined if they want to read a book, they’re going to read a book and they don’t want it on their phone,” Keller said. “It interrupts them. It takes them away from their book. We’re finding that with more people that a book is still something humans tend to appreciate, they like the tangible.”

Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services helps provide funds for the teen programs, led by Youth Services Coordinator Laini Bostian.

She has helped devise a teen advisory group of about 28 children to help determine what programs should be offered.

“It gives them a leadership role,” Keller said. “They then take the lead in a lot of this stuff. She trains them and they are able to take on more responsibility and they feel empowered. A lot of the kids who use the library are readers already of some part.”

It’s not just for young people, there are citizens of all ages who utilize the public library. Keller said that people constantly tell her they are amazed at the programs they discover that are available at the library “They’re like ‘oh my God, I didn’t know you had that,’” Keller said.

There are Gale Courses designed for adults - that teach a wide variety of subjects, most notably the Microsoft Office Suite. It’s free with a library card and the student receives a certificate following completion of the program, which has 24 hours of classes.

There are courses in health care, Spanish speaking courses for medical and law enforcement professions, personal development courses, job searches, genealogy classes and digital photography courses.

The library also offers Pronunciator, similar to Rosetta Stone, that teaches 88 different languages and people can learn from English to Korean, Spanish to Japanese and so on.Training sessions and videos are embedded in the program.

One of the most popular classes is the computer class, which is usually filled by senior citizens ready to learn about the 21st century technology.

“We have waiting lists for that,” Keller said. “Often times they’ll get a computer and not know what to do with it.”

Staff member Evelyn Finley teaches tablet courses one-on-one and Keller said that it’s important to teach the basics - such as how to print and even how to even just turn off a laptop.

While the Internet allows the library to be accessed anywhere, there are other opportunities to do the same thing - even if it’s a little more of a throwback.

Keller referenced the Little Free Library offered at Maw and Paw’s Country Store along Route 229 in Rixeyville and pointed to another free library sitting in her office. She’s looking for another community business in the county to locate it, and hopes to have it operational soon.

Starting at an early age Getting people to use the library starts at a very young age in Culpeper.

The library offers Itsy Bitsy and Toddler storytimes, bringing in newborns and toddlers to get used to the experience.

“Not only accumulated to the library, but accumulated to people,” Keller said. “Bringing them in helps them become social.”

The staff registers the children and works through a program through the Library of Virginia focusing on gross motor skills for 2 to 3 years old.

“It’s more than just storytime,” Keller said. “It’s getting the kids used to being around other kids, it’s getting them used to working with their hands, reading stories themselves.”

The summer reading program at the library has been a mainstay and averaged 800 to 900 students last summer. Children sign out books and participate in summer programs as a way to keep their reading while school is out.

“The programs are just fun, Snakes Alive is a big one,” Keller said.

Puppet shows, STEAM programs, book clubs for kids and more are just some of the ways the staff attempts to keep the younger generation involved.

Keller said the library employs six full time employees, 17 part times and average about 50 volunteers - which grows with another 50 to 75 helpers in the summer.

The volunteers play a critical role at the library, shelving about 450,000 books annually.

“We always find when times are good, our circulation goes down,” Keller said. “When times are bad, it goes up again.”

That’s reverse of donations to the Friends of Culpeper County Library, as when the economy is booming they see more donations. The Friends group hosts a used book store in the library and the funds derived from that help with programs.

“The Friends do a great job, their book store helps raise money for the summer reading program,” Keller said. “We’ve been very fortunate to have people make donations to us. We couldn’t run the library with it without help from the county.”

Twenty years ago, the building was built for $2.2 million. They recently underwent an expansion, growing to 22,000 square feet.

On March 2, the library will kick off a month of celebrations by offering dessert and mini golf inside the library from 6 to 9 p.m. On March 3, residents will be able to mini golf for free inside the library.

There will be drawings and giveaways.

“The community has been very generous,” Keller said. “Each week we’re going to feature a collage of pictures from when this library started.”

The library is open Monday through Thursday 10 to 9, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 to 5, and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

Film and audio galore at Library of Congress Packard Campus More than 7 million recorded items are preserved in Culpeper County

eep inside a mountain in Culpeper County sits a videophile and audiophile’s dream.

More than 7 million recorded items - from film to television to radio to recorded sound - reside at the Library of Congress’ Packard Campus National Audio-Visual Conservation Center on Mt. Pony.

Once a year, on Columbus Day, the center opens its doors to the public to tour the full facility. The public normally gets a peek inside during free screenings of films in the center’s theatre, but they generally don’t get to venture inside the bunker-like facility.

David Critics, Administrative Officer for the Packard Campus, said the office in Washington, D.C. opens its doors twice a year but in Culpeper, it’s a yearly event to give the public an idea of what exactly goes on behind the scenes.

“We open the lobby are up to the public two or three times a week, but we never let them go really beyond the lobby,” Critics said. “This is the Treasures of Culpeper | spring/summer 2018 | 25

one opportunity each year for them to see our work spaces, get into the vaults and see the labs upstairs.”

What a view it is, as visitors walk through rooms full of monitors, editing equipment, televisions displaying videos ranging from political speeches to SpongeBob Squarepants.

Once the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, one of several federal reserve continuity of operation facilities across the nation, the building once housed billions of dollars in coin and currency in an effort to repopulate the economy in case of nuclear war.

Thankfully, it was never needed but was in service from 1968 to 1993. After it was decommissioned, it was purchased by David Woodley Packard and the Packard Humanities Institute and redesigned to the tune of $160 million. Then, in the largest private sector donation in the history of the Library of Congress and the second largest donation (after the Smithsonian) from a private entity to the government, the facility was turned back over to the Library of Congress for its preservation efforts in 2007.

Greg Lukow, Chief, National Audio-Visual Conservation Center , said that it still amazes the staff that there are people in the community who don’t know about the campus.

“We still periodically when we have a screening in our theatre, we’ll ask for a show of hands how many people are here for the first time,” Lukow said. “We’re at the same time gratified and puzzled why they haven’t already been here before. Some people are still discovering us.”

Measuring 415,000 square feet, the Packard Campus is home to more than 7 million pieces of recordings.

The Library of Congress as a whole has close to 170 million items in its collection ranging from recordings, to published works, to newspapers.

Here in Culpeper, the Packard Campus is where film, audio and recordings are preserved and made available to the public.

Movies, TV programs, radio broadcasts, sound recordings, video games, DVDs and Blu-Rays are all preserved and then cataloged and stored in the vaults.

“Most distinctive here is that we have three preservation laboratories,” Lukow said. “That is where we make new copies from the old original analog media.”

The film lab has a very large focus on preserving approximately 140,000 reels of nitrate motion picture, all theatrical movies were produced on nitrate from the 1890s until around 1951 when it was replaced by modern safety film stock.

“We do a lot of work preserving our nitrate film collections,” Lukow said.

“We have original camera negatives for a number of the major Hollywood production studios here.”

During the October tour of the nitrate vault, George Willeman, Nitrate Vault Manager, showed an eager group some of the earliest recordings and spoke about the process that goes into preserving these films.

He explained the film was very flammable, not needing any oxygen to combust (providing its own) so the vaults are kept at a chilly 39 degrees fahrenheit with 30 percent humidity.

One of the oldest films in the collection is an experimental film from 1891 by Thomas Edison called “Indian Club Swingers.”

Using the tours to explain to the general public what goes on at the Packard Campus is an important part of the Library of Congress’ job, Lukow said.

“The education and public outreach components of what we do are really integral,” Lukow said. “We like to showcase our films here with the open to the public film screenings.”

The collection is expansive, with 3.5 million sound recordings and 1.6 million moving images.

There’s a collection policy for everything, with a mandate to acquire a comprehensive collect of the world’s knowledge and America’s creativity.

“When it comes to the motion picture heritage, television heritage, recorded sound heritage, we

try to acquire as comprehensively as possible,” Lukow said. “We are aided in that by the fact that the United States copyright office is located at the Library of Congress in D.C.” The collection is always growing, with many of the almost 120 staffers in Culpeper focusing their efforts on locating hard to find films and acquiring them. Sometimes, people approach them with their collections, which the LOC appreciates.

“We’re constantly trying to find lost silent films, early television we don’t have,” Lukow said. “We have some of the eclectic wide-ranging presentations of some of the rarest, little seen films imaginable. We have a mixed kind of curatorial approach to showcasing. We don’t privilege the well known,we don’t ignore the little known. You’ll see things here you’ll never see anywhere else.”

Talking with the employees at the Packard Campus, there’s a common thread among them the passion to preserve and educate.

“We’ve got a lot of people here who have been educated in the history of film and television,” Lukow said. “We’ve had a number of people on the technology side of things that come from Los Angeles or New York who have worked in the studios in post production environment.”

Catlin Hunter, head of the Recorded Sound Section at the LOC, says she’s constantly amazed by the recordings coming through the doors.

“One of the most unique recordings is a Voyager golden record,” Hunter said. “This is a copy that went up with the Voyager spacecraft.

One collection that I think is very unique is the Universal Music Group Collection. We got it few years ago and it has about 200,000 items. It includes these metal masters that have metal parts. Those you get a great sound quality from those transfers.”

She admits it’s a labor of love to catalog all the recordings - describing them, preserving them and then digitizing them.

Loughney said some of the most recent rare collections include the late Jerry Lewis’ collection and the archives of the Dick Cavett collection.
