‘The Merry Wives Of Windsor’ Feelin’ Groovy CURTAIN CALLS

There is a tradition in Shakespeare lore that Elizabeth I, upon seeing a performance of “Henry IV, Part I”, so enjoyed the comical John Falstaff that she requested another play be written in which Sir John would fall in love. But a “request” from the queen means “Kindly have it done in fourteen days.” This may or may not be true, but it would explain the thin plot of “The Merry Wives of Windsor” in which the bumptious Falstaff does indeed fall in love – with the money of the husbands of the Merry Wives.

Sometimes you just have to let a thing be what it is. “The Merry Wives…” is, at best, a rom-com in which the greedy would-be swain is humiliated, goes in for a second try, is humiliated worse, is found out, and eventually repents. There are plenty of laughs along the way with the requisite feel-good comeuppance.

In that regard, Folger’s production (the last at this location while a two-year renovation gets underway) satisfies what you come for. A tip-top cast does their job with sparkling timing and well-placed buffoonery.

Where things get a little far out is in the concept.

Director Aaron Posner has an earnest and well-intentioned theory behind setting “Merry Wives…” in 1972. Something about the Women’s Lib movement, the social energy of the times, the general zeitgeist, I suppose.

He even imagines that the play tells “a little uncomfortable truth” in its exposure of mortals’ flagrant flaws. I must have missed that part in my puzzlement over Tony Cisek’s 1959-era House Beautiful inspired set (loved the Mondrian color-changing windows, whatever the point), the late ‘60’s slogans, and the mish-mash of costumes and styles ranging from early ‘60s to mid ‘70s. And while it’s true that in 1972 many folks were still too stoned to know what year it was, a bit more clarity in setting and purpose would have been welcome here.

Sir John dreams big, and his armor-plated ego persuades him that he can court two married women with the same love letter, thus winning their affections and access to their husbands’ funds.

Mistress Ford (Ami Brabson) and Mistress Page (Regina Aquino) play him for the big fish he is with complications authored by the suspicious husband, Ford (in a splendid performance by understudy Ryan Sellers). Fearing cuckolding more than death, poor Mr. Ford disguises himself as Brook, a hopeless suitor of the virtuous Mrs. Ford and pays Falstaff to try to seduce her in order to find out if she can, in fact, be led astray.

Meanwhile, three hopeful swains vie for the hand of their lovely daughter, Anne Page (Linda Bard). The aptly named Abraham Slender (Brian Reisman) woos in an outfit that, even

Cody Nickell is a treasure in this role and makes all that time and place confusion irrelevant, so wickedly funny is his every appearance.

As an assistant to Dr. Caius, Mistress Quickly (played by the inimitable Kate Eastwood Norris) is one perfectly groomed nurse right out of a 1964 yearbook, topped off with an everyhair-in-place blonde flip. She’s also warm, and droll, and burdened with other people’s messages which put her in the line of fire. Sir Hugh Evans (Todd Scofield) unwisely asks her to support Slender’s love suit, a proposition which presages an invitation to duel from the

choleric Dr. Caius. Be not alarmed. This is a comedy, so no one dies.

There are a few moments when servants or messengers run in and out with urgent news and can’t seem to resist acting out Every. Single. Word. complete with hand gestures and full body exclamations. It’s not necessary.

We get the gist.

Never let it be said that Mr. Posner didn’t want his cast to have fun. The energy crackles, and references to songs of the time were like raindrops falling on my head. The most shameless of all these side doors from the script is delivered by Ford (as Mr. Brook) wearing his very best Rolling Stones shirt and complaining that he can’t get no satisfaction. I blush to report it.

Trying to relate this two hours of whimsy to an era best remembered for demonstrations, civil rights marches, sit-ins, paisley bell-bottoms and horrified parents is iffy at best; the comic potential is realized, but the connection is a strain.

SAFE hosts 2nd Annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball Feb. 22 in Culpeper SAFE is encouraging supporters to Don’t Hide Behind the Mask.

The Friends of SAFE will host the second annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball at the Culpeper Center Feb. 22 from 7 to 11 p.m.

Cindy Hedges, executive director of SAFE, said tickets cost $75 and includes a mask and a drink ticket.

Hedges said this year several local chefs will be providing food for the event this year.

Last year the Masquerade Ball raised $35,000 and the funds helped renovate the new SAFE shelter.

The money this year will help cover aspects of the renovation, especially exterior, that isn’t covered in the grants.

“The grants cover very specific things and so there are things that aren’t covered,” SAFE Board President Jamie Clancey said. “If you think about families that are going from an unsafe environment to another, there are day to day things they don’t have.”

Clancey said that the new shelter will be able to accomodate pets something many don’t think about when they are leaving a dangerous situation.

“We don’t even like to think of it as a shelter,” Clancey said. “It’s their home.”

The event is held in conjunction with Culpeper Renaissance Inc.’s annual Mardi Gras. Clancey said that helps boost attendance.

“I think it’s a fun event, there’s not one like it,” Clancey said. “What SAFE does for the community, no one else does. I think people understand that and expect that and what to help support that. Last year was so much fun, this year is going to be so much more fun.”

women, and children who are victims of domestic & sexual abuse in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange & Rappahannock counties. It is the only agency providing shelter for domestic & sexual violence victims in these five counties. All services are free and confidential to their clients.

In 2019 SAFE answered 660 hotline calls, provided 3,323 nights of safe, secure shelter to 82 clients and assisted 146 survivors of domestic violence.

Hedges said the funds raised by the Mardi Gras fundraiser helps keep people safe.

“It gives us the discretionary funds where if someone is fleeing I don’t need to think twice about getting them to safety,” Hedges said.

Servant leaders encourage others to grow as individuals as they seek to become the best leaders they can be within their families, careers, and communities. While ordinary leaders often focus on increasing their power as individuals, servant leaders do not lead for their own benefit or personal gain.

I have been a servant leader within FCCLA throughout all of my high school career.

A leader should not lead with the mindset of self- gain, but rather with the mindset of putting others first and encouraging them to reach their goals. I have demonstrated this selfless quality in my years of serving others while never asking the questions "What will I get out of this?" or "How will this benefit me?". I am always willing to put in the extra effort to ensure the success of this incredible organization. As a chapter, state, and national officer, I lead and mentored fellow members while preparing for competitive events, planned National Program projects, and executed fun and productive meetings. This positively contributed to my own chapter as well as chapters across our state, and nation.

Through my involvement in FCCLA, I learned to consistently look ahead and focus on how I can help the organization grow into the future. I examined how decisions made today will affect tomorrow, taking into consideration how I can help leave a legacy that prepares others for future success. Through my servant leadership I have aided in the growth of others, while developing and strengthening my 21st century skills.

Death Ridge Brewery close to grand opening

By Amy Wagner Contributing writer Death Ridge Brewery, in Jeffersonton, Virginia is the area’s newest brewery.

Owners Zachary Turner and his wife, Lauren, are constructing the brewery on their property, Hallowed Ground Farm, and while just recently under roof, they plan to begin pouring cold brews this spring. Located about ten miles outside of Culpeper, the Turners broke ground in late August of 2019, and Death Ridge Brewery is not far from its grand opening.

Standing outside the brewery recently, the Turners explained that the name comes from a stream, Death Ridge Run, which runs through the property. While the farm is rich in history, the brewery itself sits on an old Civil War camp site.

Turner purchased the farm from his dad in 2015. “We have always wanted to do this,” he said with his wife nodding at his side. “A winery just wasn’t our style,” she said. His wife said that they originally thought they’d just grow hops to distribute but looking around she said, “that has grown into something more”. That “more” began as a Christmas tree farm, five years ago, where people could come for a fresh Christmas tree.

They later added a two-acre pumpkin patch and strawberry patch. Tulips were planted this past fall and sunflowers will be planted this spring. ➤ See Death Ridge, Page 7

The Culpeper Lions Club donated $82,913 to the Culpeper community Thursday at their monthly meeting. Zack, 38, said they plan to have bands for live music and rotating food trucks. He also shared that they plan to host different festivals with wines to compliment.

“When people come pick strawberries, we will have our strawberry ale available,” he said. Lauren, 37, said the brewery is part of the Harvest Host program. “People can come with their RVs, when they are travelling, and park free,” she said. The couple also shared about their member program. For just over

$100 a year members will receive a larger pour when they visit, new beer tastings, exclusive events and access to the upstairs member only room.

“We will open with four beers,” said Zack, “and scale up to twelve. Some will be seasonal, and some made up of winners of the homebrew competitions we would like to have.” A roofing estimator, who works at home, Turner said this is an ideal time to tighten things up and complete the brewery’s interior. “We are under roof now and it’s dry. We will start insulation this week and keep going from there,” he said. The brewery is located at 5550 Higher Ground Trail in Jeffersonton and the Turners invite everyone to stop by this spring.

The struggles of a beekeeper in 2019 Good tidings Culpeper, I have not written a column in quite some time and thought it was time to share!

As we move from January into February, I have to be honest, 2019 was a challenging year for me and others that worked extremely hard to keep our bees healthy. I can’t figure out this weather lately and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.

A few weeks ago, when it was warm, the sun was shining, and as people were taking advantage of the warm weather so were my bees as I watched them bringing in so much pollen.

Now granted I am not the best videographer (as my children have told me on numerous occasions), but I tried to capture my bees as they brought pollen into the hive I have at my shop (www.labeedaloca. com, check out my short video).

They were working extremely hard and I was able to share with those customers that came in to see them and explain what they were doing, then shortly afterwards we had a cold snap with a lot of wet weather.

I’d like to take this time to explain what happens to bees in the winter. And what exactly is a winter bee?

Rather than living four to six weeks like most of their summertime sisters, winter bees may live up to four months, or sometimes even longer. These are the bees that determine whether

the colony will survive the winter.

Winter bees care for the queen, help the colony with temperature control, and help to raise the brood that will take over the colony in spring.

While nectar provides energy, pollen provides everything else.

One cannot raise bees or children or some other living beings on sugar alone; you also need protein, fat, lipids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and trace elements, the same with bees.

Pollen contains all of these and more. And here is where it becomes problematic. Pollen more times than not can become scarce during wet weather, dry spells, and especially during the winter. Yet a colony does not store pollen on the same scale as it stores nectar.

A winter bee has an enlarged fat body with enlarged hypopharyngeal

glands which secrete the food for the brood as well as possessing a large store of vitellogenin which is a protein, recent studies have indicated that it may have a more comprehensive function in bees. As the winter bees continue to feed the brood their fat bodies shrink and the glands produce less, but it depends on a few variables such as how much food is stored for winter, the quality of the food, and of course, the weather.

The winter bees are phenomenal creatures, it doesn’t sound like they work hard but they do, it falls upon them for the survival of the hive to get through winter and hopefully spring will be around the corner.

In 2019, private landowners, working together with land trusts and public agencies, protected 12,430 acres of land in Albemarle, Clarke, Culpeper, Fauquier, Greene, Loudoun, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock counties. The 2019 conservation easements bring the

Driggers takes flight of his life

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer John Driggers is a self-professed adrenaline junkie.

The Culpeper resident and the face of Multiple Sclerosis in the community, John recently fulfilled one of his lifelong goals of flying in a biplane.

The Hospice of the Piedmont patient said he’s always loved adventure, recalling stories from his youth.

“It started when I was 13 years old: I climbed Mt. Fuji in a hurricane and spent the night on the mountain,” he said. “We were reported missing when we weren’t heard from after our ascent, but we had no idea we were in trouble, and I was hooked. My need for adventure started then.”

Since he was diagnosed with MS in 1998, the disease has not slowed him down. In fact, the self proclaimed workaholic continued his full time job for two more years before finally retiring in 2000 and settling into his family life at home – and more escapades.

“My favorite adventure so far was the one that took place recently,” John said of the opportunity he had this fall to fly with a

stunt pilot in a small biplane over the town of Culpeper, where he and his wife Janet live. Because of John’s disease, he is confined to a wheelchair, which made the mechanics of getting into the biplane a little trickier. Luckily, a local friend named Chuck had access to a truck with a cherry picker and regularly uses the cherry picker to take disabled veterans on plane rides. Chuck was dispatched to help move John from his wheelchair into Rick’s Boeing PT-17 Stearman 220 HP for the flight back in October.

“Chuck picked me, dropped me in and I fit in the cockpit like a glove,” John said.

As members of John and Janet’s family looked on, John took to the sky.

As the pilot of the Pitts Special acrobatic plane, Rick, maneuvered the machine through loops and drops, John’s family below stood in awe… and John had the time of his life. John’s wife Janet noted that, as he was doing rolls in the sky, he was looking out the cockpit, waving to the crowd below “like Miss America.”

“When he did his parachuting, I was scared, since then as much as he looking forward to it, I was

John said that the poem, High Flight, by John Gillespie McGuire Jr. popped into his head as he soared through the air.

"Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sunsplit clouds and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence.

Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through

footless halls of air.

"Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle, flew; and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God." “At the very end, it says I reached out and touched the face of God, that’s the feeling I had,” John said. “I was free, I was soaring and I’ve done 100 things that people would not do. I felt lucky. I made a concerted effort to concentrate and enjoy it. It was euphoria.”

Being a true crime and history writer, I felt compelled to go down to the US Senate and watch the impeachment trial myself. It is a show that is impossible for a guy like me to resist.

The process for getting in requires a pass that you need to get from your senators. There are two kinds. A blue VIP pass means you get to sit and remain as long as you want.

The green pass is one that gets you in for up to an hour of time, then leave. The VIP passes are for, “friends and family,” of senators, in other words, big money donors. I believe that giving money to a career politician is equivalent to giving the car keys to a drunken teenager, needless to say I got a green pass.

You are not allowed to show anything political, nor can you say anything or you will be arrested and escorted out. I did wear my Donald Trump socks, but avoided crossing my legs so no one could claim I was making a statement.

You spent a lot of time in lines, roughly three hours in line to watch 45 minutes of presentation. It was totally worth it.

When you watch the impeachment on TV, it’s not engaging. There are things going on during the presentation that

A different point of view on immigration

While I understand this is a very difficult discussion in today’s environment, it remains that there is a side of immigration that is completely forgotten and ought to be discussed.

I am certainly not trying to convince either side, rather to elevate the discussion about the subject and the acknowledge the elephant in the room.

While my heart goes out to anyone who is facing their daily life in constant fear for their safety and the inability to provide food for their families, it remains that the word illegal aliens means what it means and yet, many would disagree.

I immigrated twice from France, my birth country: first to Israel where I met my wife of thirty-five years and followed her back to her home in the United States, and we built our

What I really enjoyed was watching the senators and other officials in the chamber. I got to see a number of people that would never be President, which was personally amusing. My senator, a red-faced Tim Kaine, squirmed in his seat constantly, looking like an anxious seven year old in church. He tried to recline in seats not designed for that, and was fidgety to the point where it was distracting.

Mitt Romney sat unmoving and unblinking. One person in our group said afterwards, “I think Mitt was asleep.” I countered with, “I think Mitt was dead.”

Elizabeth Warren scribbled notes and tweaked her hair. I give her credit for at least looking like she was paying attention. In the back row was Cory Booker and Kamala Harris. Like Romney they were in the back row on opposite ends of the chamber – apparently the seats reserved for those that had tried and failed.

Adam Schiff whispered to the other members of the prosecution team, chuckling several times during Starr’s presentation. I found it irritating given he was only a few feet away from Starr.

A number of senators looked over at him with scornful faces. His lack of respect didn’t seem to be playing out well. Then again, I think most of the senators had their minds made up before the trial started. Several of them, as “jurors,”

directly benefit from voting against the President since they are running against him.

Most of the senators sat stone-faced.

Some scribbled page after page of notes, and I respected that. Chief Justice Roberts, who smiled throughout, spun his pen on his notepad several times, but I didn’t see him jot down anything. Then again, his role is mostly to maintain order.

The prosecution team mumbled amongst themselves, with the junior staffers taking notes. Trump’s team took notes, but watched the senators for reactions. At one point, Jay Sekulow, looked up at the gallery for a good three minutes, seeming to stare right at me. I get it, he was curious to see how we, the people, were reacting. You don’t catch that stuff when you watch it on TV. When we were done and escorted out, our little party of twelve finally talked.

As it turns out, all but two of our group were Trump supporters. A couple came from Kentucky to see the proceedings.

Two of the guys in our group were law enforcement who sang praises for the President.

We all came together to watch the process, to watch our elected representatives, to check on them and make sure that the process was working.

We didn’t have banners to show our support for the President, we showed it by coming and being there for him live.

To learn how to become a success, I remembered the stories I was told about my great grandfather who immigrated to London from Russia and my great-great-grandparents who immigrated from Prussia to Paris in the mid 1850’s.

In the 1902 London census, my great grandfather made every effort to ensure that his family would be able to integrate into London society.

The first steps he took was to convert everyone’s first name from Russian to English, his son, my grandfather, was born Chemje (chmj) and in 1902 he became Harry and when the family moved to France after 1912, he became Henri. My grandfather was raised in London and spoke English fluently and then French. In France, both sides of my family had to fend for themselves and at times it was not easy. Once they were able to speak and understand French, their lives became much easier.

The true common denominator amongst people is a common language, if the country of Israel can function with seven million or so inhabitants speaking 193 or so languages and dialects and yet the majority learn to speak Modern Hebrew, then why can’t the same principal work in the United States or any other country for that matter.

The French language did not come easily to my maternal grandfather and I recall him writing a sign on their business door saying that they would be closed for the day. I did not want to offend him with his French writing skills, so I told him a white lie and rewrote it.

How did I learn the English language? We kept an English dictionary to help us find words, but it was mostly by my wife recommending that I watch the Cosby show and the Golden Girls, and this is how I was able to develop me improve my ➤ See Letter, Page 18

In partnership with The Piedmont Environmental Council, the National Trust for Historic Preservation this year permanently protected 1,024 acres of historically-significant land at James Madison’s Montpelier, adding to its previously conserved 915 acres in Orange County.

The permanent conservation easement provides additional protections to Montpelier’s beautiful landscapes, as well as agricultural and forest areas, scenic open space and wildlife habitat on the property, which all serve as a living classroom for the visiting public.

“The amount of conservation in the northern Piedmont demonstrates the tremendous appreciation landowners hold for the character and quality of this region. In many ways, their commitment to long-term land protection makes this a very special place for every one of us,” said Mike Kane, Piedmont Environmental Council’s director of land conservation.

In Albemarle County, the James C. Justice family donated to the Albemarle Conservation

Easement Authority an easement protecting 4,500 acres near Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello.

It is the largest conservation easement in Albemarle County history. By limiting development on the entire property and preserving its current forestal and agricultural activities, the easement donation limits future threats to public drinking water supplies and preserves the spectacular scenic views enjoyed by visitors to Monticello and residents of the region.

A catalyst for land protection in 2019 has been a $500,000 grant from The Volgenau Foundation to accelerate the pace of farmland conservation in Upper Rappahannock River watershed. Through enhanced outreach and education by The Piedmont Environmental Council to landowners in the watershed, dozens of landowners have expressed interest in ensuring the long-term protection of their land through permanent conservation.

A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement between a landowner and a public agency or a nonprofit conservation group, such as The Piedmont Environmental Council. By limiting development on the land, easements provide various financial benefits to landowners while also protecting the natural, scenic and cultural resources of the land for the benefit of the public. The 421,370 acres conserved in the northern Piedmont area is more than twice the size of Shenandoah National Park.

“In our region and throughout the Commonwealth, we are fortunate to have a history of state and local leaders who understand the critical value of open space and have implemented incentives and programs that assist landowners with the cost of donating conservation easements. The Piedmont Environmental Council is here and happy to educate and guide landowners through the process,” Kane said.

For Culpeper, conservation easements in 2019 protected approximately: • 2.7 miles of streams; • 82.5 acres of wetlands; • 12 acres adjacent to scenic rivers; • 522.8 acres of prime farmland soils; • 160.4 acres of forests; • 12 acres along scenic byways; • 22.5 acres in the viewshed of the Appalachian Trail; • 199.9 acres of Civil War battlefields.

A funny story was my first job in Burlington, Vermont, working in the Finance department for Digital Equipment.

I came home and told my wife that I would be assigned to work with Petty Cash in the morning, and that while we never met, I was looking forward to work with her. Once my wife got herself under control, she explained to me what Petty Cash was.

English is the language of our nation and it ought to be a requirement for everyone to learn our language, because most who do not, will find it difficult to elevate their social status and

succeed in our country.

I became a US citizen 30 years ago this year and this is the nation I pledged allegiance to when I took the oath. I feel as a nation and a society we need to work harder to find solutions and not create more problems.

I am sure some of you, will think that it is a short view of the problems and yet this article is a solution to help adults better integrate into the American society. This is great country with so many opportunities and I hope that I will be around to see the changes.

VSP investigating fatal crash following pursuit involving CCSO deputies The Virginia State Police are handling an investigation of a fatal crash on Stonehouse Mountain Road that occurred at 2:45 a.m. Jan. 19 involving two Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office deputies.

“Deputy Spicer and Deputy Wayland were involved in a brief pursuit of Mendez-Lopez during which the suspect struck the right side of Deputy Spicer’s vehicle causing enough damage that he was unable to continue.
