LOCAL NEWS Hundreds turn out to support Second Amendment rights By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Hundreds supporting Second Amendment Rights marched peacefully at Yowell Meadow Park Saturday afternoon, in hopes legislators in Richmond would hear their voice. “There are enough existing laws on the books for gun restrictions, we need no further, it’s only going to impact the law abiding citizens and not the criminals,” Culpeper County Sheriff Scott Jenkins said. The rally, which drew more than 500 people, was in response to proposed background checks and red-flag restrictions Gov. Ralph Northam and legislators are considering. The Culpeper response was peaceful but stern, do not impede our rights to bear arms. Patrick Heelen, of the Culpeper County Second Amendment group, spoke passionately about why he - an ordinary citizen - felt compelled to

fight back against the proposed laws. “I’m here because my family has been affected by crime,” he said, addressing the throng Saturday. “I’ll be darned if Richmond, or anyone, tells me what I cannot use to protect my girls and my wife.” Marshall Keene, with the Culpeper Republican Party, said the organizations co-sponsored the event. “I can assure you on behalf of the Culpeper Republican Party we will stand with each and every one of you to send a strong message to the governor and any other legislator in Richmond that our right to keep or bear arms are non-negotiable,” Keene said. “Unlike our local Democrat Party counterparts, who I quote from a media source ‘Culpeper 2A members are a bunch of fanatics.’ It is our goal, like many of you, to have a peaceful resolve and to be heard for the preservation of protecting all of our Constitutional rights. Fauquier Health limits visitation due to flu outbreak

Due to high levels of respiratory viruses in the community, Fauquier Health is implementing seasonal influenza precautions. Visitation restrictions will be in place during peak flu season, which generally lasts through the first of April. Fauquier Health recommends the following individuals limit visitation to the hospital during peak flu season, unless presenting the need for care: • Children under 13 years of age, • Pregnant women, and • People with chronic lung diseases. In order to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its patients and to help prevent the spread of infection, Fauquier Health also asks the community to: Please limit the number of visitors to three (3) per patient. • If you have flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough or runny nose, please do not visit. • Remember to wash your hands before entering and exiting a patient’s room and after leaving the hospital. • If you are in the hospital for tests or procedures and have a flu-like illness (fever over 100 degrees with cough or sore throat), please ask for a mask. The best ways to protect against the flu are to: • Get vaccinated. It is not too late to get a vaccination. • Practice good health habits. Avoid close contact with others; stay home when sick; practice good hand hygiene; cover your nose and mouth with a tissue; and avoid touching your eyes or mouth. • If prescribed by a physician, take flu antiviral drugs.

At the beginning of each year, many of us are guilty of making resolutions that we don’t always follow through with. This year is something different though, as it marks the start of a new decade. This decade is an exciting decade for us all, but especially those in my age group. Many of us will be graduating from high school, college, and possibly even going further. We’ll be starting our own families, buying our own houses, finally doing the all adult things that we’ve heard about for so long. While this may sound overwhelming, it’s important to remember to stay positive and look forward to all of these changes. Take this as a reminder to make the best of every situation that comes your way and start your new decade off in a positive manner.

The Scrabble School Preservation Foundation will celebrate Black History Month on Saturday, February 1 from 1-3pm. (Snow date, Feb 8.) Our special guest will be Lillian Aylor, who will discuss her newly published memoir, I'll Get It Done: A Life Journey in Rappahannock. In the book, Lillian shares the story of her early life growing up during segregation in the Gid Brown Hollow area of the county—in a house without running water or electric—to her prominence in the community before and after integration. It's a chronicle of faith, perseverance, and a life well lived.

On a recent day, she organized a game of “Jeopardy” with Aging Together’s Gina Mullins to keep the seniors sharp. Culpeper Mayor Mike Olinger said it’s that dedication that defines Miss Gladys. “Gladys is a quiet force in the community, she works very hard for the seniors in Culpeper, and most of the time her work goes unnoticed,” Olinger said. “She quietly advocates for the senior citizens of Culpeper and doesn’t like the spotlight, so this award is very fitting for her and all her hard work.” The Town of Culpeper Police Department helps Gladys with programs and volunteers during the annual Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Senior Bowl, which raises funds for the five senior centers in the RRCS region. “Gladys is the most caring and loving person that I know,” Culpeper Town Police Chief Chris Jenkins said. “Her unselfish nature and always giving to others along with her commitment and loyalty to “Her Seniors” is unmatched anywhere.”

Jenkins said he learned a valuable lesson about Gladys’ persuasive nature early in his role as police chief. “As a young police chief I soon learned when Gladys calls you and needs to see you, drop what you’re doing and go and when she asks for something (always for others) you absolutely don’t say NO!,” he said. “Our community is such a better place because of Gladys.” Her seniors love Miss Gladys. They look forward to coming daily to the senior center and she constantly finds new ways to entertain them and to keep them engaged with the community. Ivin Edwards, volunteers at the Senior Center, and he couldn’t praise Miss Gladys enough. “She is one of the greatest,” Edwards said. “She loves everybody. She will go out of her way to help you.” Esther Hart has been coming since 2007 and she said if it wasn’t for the senior center she wouldn’t get many of the things she needs. “It means a lot because I get a lot, sometimes I get things I need and I don’t have to go to the store,” Hart said. “She’s very nice to us and we have a nice time. I enjoy having someplace to come every day.” Gladys has helped fundraise for the renovations for the senior cen-

ter in recent years, reaching out to local businesses to help brighten up and freshen up the center. With the help of many individuals, businesses, and other organizations, the senior center raised over a million dollars to renovate and enlarge the facility so that it could accommodate a larger number of seniors. Quick to deflect praise (Gladys wasn’t aware of this award), she can rattle of the dozens who contribute to help. Dairy Queen, Pepper’s Grill, Jefferson Home Builders, the Culpeper United Methodist Church and many others make the seniors visits enjoy-

able. During a chat at the senior bowl, she praised Culpeper for their generosity. “They’re always willing to give more,” Williams said. “If I have a need, I go out to the community and they step up and they help me. I am the most blessed person in the world, to live in this community and have such wonderful friends.” However, it’s Miss Gladys who constantly interacts with them spreading joy and love in the only way she can. Congratulations Miss Gladys, we love you too.

A tribute to Adam

Readers of this column are used to my tales of being a father to three young girls and the hijinks that ensue. Today, I want to take a different approach. This column is to pay tribute to a late, dear friend of mine. I feel like I’ve known Adam DeSio my whole life. We grew up in the same small town - Kane, Pa. - where his grandad was the longtime mayor and his grandma owned the roller skating rink in town. His family owned DeSio’s Restaurant in Lantz Corners and we both attended CCD classes at St. Callistus Catholic Church. In fact, some of my earliest memories of Adam are of he and our friend Nick blowing spit wads at each other during CCD and then getting rapped on the knuckles by the nuns. I wouldn’t say we were particularly close in high school, but in a graduating class of 99 people it’s hard to not interact with your classmates daily. We were cordial, I’d say, and I have always admired his kind spirit, artistic talent and his big laugh. Years passed, we both went away to college and both had some escapades along the way. He went for a time to art school in Pittsburgh and eventually ended up going to school in Buffalo. I, while just an hour away from home, didn’t venture back to our small hometown much and so I hadn’t thought of him for several years until I moved to Culpeper. After I moved down to be closer to my then fiance - now wife - Sarah, we ran an engagement notice in our local paper, the Kane Republican. One day, while working at the Culpeper Star-Exponent, I got an email from an address I didn’t recognize. “Hey Jeff, my mom just sent me your engagement notice from the paper and I see you’re in Culpeper. I live in Lake of the Woods with my wife.” It was Adam. I replied back that we’d have to get together at some point as we lived so close to each other. At first, we didn’t because of our busy schedules. About six months later my wife Sarah started a graduate class through George Mason University. She was taking a cohort class in Fredericksburg and on the first day the students had to stand up and introduce themselves. Sarah started off with her standard line, “I’m from a small town in Pennsylvania,” and a few moments later a girl beside her followed with the same. “Where are you from,” Sarah asked. “You’ve never heard of it,” the girl replied. Then, a second later, she said “Kane.” Sarah nearly jumped out of her seat - as they shared stories of the Westside Grill, Texas Hots and mutual acquaintances. Sarah realized she hadn’t asked her name and when she did, it all came together. “Stephanie DeSio.” Stephanie graduated three years after Adam and I did and just like Sarah and I, he followed her to Virginia when she got a teaching job in Spotsylvania County. It wasn’t long after Adam and I finally

reconnected after nearly 10 years of not seeing each other - and I’ll always remember some of his first words. “Hey, I want to apologize if I was mean to you in high school,” he said as we shared a beer one evening. Having been bullied a lot in my younger days, that statement meant a lot - though I never remember Adam being mean, maybe laughing along with the guys at my expense but that was the least of my worries. As we reconnected, I discovered he had turned his passion for art into a career. He painted - in my opinion - masterpieces and he took the most lovely pictures. Some of my favorite photos of my family are the ones that he’s taken over the years - for no more payment than a couple of pizzas or a case of beer. He had an eye for light and a passion for the little things in life - walking his dog Rothko along the battlefields, his fantasy football league with all his buddies back home and then playing with his son Addison. Addison is six months older than my Mady, though he has his father’s height. Tall, with that impish, mischievous look that boys have, we’ve always joked with Mady we’ve had an arranged marriage. The last time we hung out with Adam was about a year ago. We sat in his new house and he played the guitar and drums, letting the girls take a turn thumping away at them. I always admired how talented he was, and how easy it seemed to come to him. I couldn’t keep a beat to save my life, but he would just sit down and pound out a song without breaking a sweat. His artwork, which I’m proud to say I own a few pieces, was breathtaking. Colorful, dynamic - they morphed his love of modern and abstract art into something that was just pure Adam. When we said goodbye that late October night in 2018, we promised we’d get together soon - probably after our busy holiday season finished. Then, one day early last year, Stephanie called distraught. Adam had been diagnosed with cancer. I guess I always thought the chemo treatments and the medicine would work, and soon we’d be enjoying a beer on a warm summer day talking about the upcoming fantasy football season and laughing about stories from our past. That day didn’t come. He kept getting progressively worse and I never got a chance to visit, in the fear that I’d bring some new infection or disease into their house. Last week, we got a text he was not doing well. Again, I thought - knowing Adam - he would pull through. I believe in God, I’m a faithful person, but sometimes even I wonder why bright lights are extinguished so early. As we sat Monday night in shock after hearing the news, my wife kept just saying how fun he was. Adam was the life of the party. He made sure you were having fun and he made sure to bring everybody into the conversation. He was a true friend - and one I’m glad I reconnected with. I don’t have a dog, but I think I’m going to take a walk in a battlefield this week to just listen to the silence and enjoy the colors. It’s how Adam would want to be remembered.

By Jeff Say Culpeper Times Staff Writer Mary Haak was saddened, appalled and outraged when she discovered her ancestors kept slaves. Now she’s trying to find a way to rectify it. Haak is helping organize “A Day of Remembrance for the Enslaved People of Fauquier and Culpeper Counties, Honoring a Different Legacy on Lee-Jackson Day” Jan. 17. The event will be held on the Kelly’s Ford Bridge at 3 p.m. Haak, whose family lived in Loudoun County back in the 1700s, said that 30 years ago she discovered that an ancestor “rented” an African-American slave. She said that she “reconciled” with the fact but discovered more information recently. “I got my DNA tested and came to find out that my ancestors on both sides enslaved a large number of people - 187 of them just in Loudoun County alone,” she said. “So for the past eight to 10 years, I tried to find where they had buried the enslaved. I thought it was really important to remember those people. Since I couldn’t find the cemetery I had been throwing flowers in the river, usually on Memorial Day.” She spoke to a couple of friends, who agreed that they were not “terribly impressed” with the thought of Lee-Jackson Day - believing it encouraged people to run “around with Confederate Flags and uniforms.” They agreed they needed to do something about it and the Day of Remembrance was born. She posted about the event on Facebook on Jan. 4 and said it’s been shared 60 times since then. “I was surprised, I figured a couple of friends would say they’d be there,” she said. “I have no idea how many people to expect.” ➤ Amendment, from Page 2 governor’s threats affect all Americans.” Jenkins, who has been at the forefront of the battle for Second Amendment Rights, reiterated his stance that if it comes to it, he will deputize anyone qualified so they have access to their weapons. As a member of the Fauquier NAACP, she said the organization is supporting the event as is the Culpeper branch. She said the knowledge that her family was involved in enslaving African-Americans has boosted her awareness of the issues the Commonwealth faces. “I think we have a responsibility to acknowledge the damage that we’ve done,” Haak said. “We have a big racism problem in Virginia. As we move past the holidays and into the cold dark days of winter we begin to look forward. Forward to the warmer days, sunshine, birds singing, flowers blooming and the world around us wakening from a

long nap. But for now and the next 6 or so weeks, we get to enjoy winter. Cold snow days, early sunsets pushing us indoors. Hot chocolate and marshmallows shared with friends, long naps on a Sunday afternoon. All of this is so much fun, for a little while. Then if you're like me cabin fever to set in. We are, after all an outside people, wanting to be in our gardens, hiking a new trail or finding the next adventure to satisfy our sense of curiosity and give us any reason to not be sitting inside.

There are still some things we can do in the winter that will help us be successful come spring, and get us out into the great outdoors were we belong. Once of my favorite things about a healthy garden is the amount of wildlife it will bring into a yard. Birds and bees. Butterflies and of course all of our hairy little companions. Bird feeders are an incredible addition to any landscape, placed out in front of a bedroom or kitchen window. Birds are hunting hard for a food source this time of year so adding a new bird feeder could bring in some incredible cardinals and finch. Using bird seed to treat a secondary walk instead of chemicals is a great way to protect your garden and the animals. Winter pruning. When the leafs come off your shrubs and trees they show you every branch, offering up a perfect time to see what they might really need. Not to mention things like Hibiscus bloom on new growth so pruning in late winter will encourage more flowers.

Garden sheds and tools, can be cleaned up, oiled and serviced. Most of us have our favorite tools, shears, a set of pruners, the shovel that is just the right size. These things we have gone out to every day or every week that have been so reliable and always got the job done. Then as we finished the hard labor of fall they were placed back in the shed but did we clean them, oil them, sharpen them, or was the labor of the day so much that we placed them on the bench and walked away. I have read overwintering metal tools in a pot of clean sand and vegetable oil will prevent the steel from taking damage, and that Linseed oil rubbed on a wooden handle will prevent it from cracking. I personally like to just clean my tools with water, re sharpen and repair anything that needs repaired and then paint my tools to match with a bright colored paint specific to the material. This allows me to not only protect my tools but see them. It also allows me to quickly recognize if someone has borrowed them so I can quickly reclaim them. Quick winter check list to help keep

your landscape beautiful 1st: get your soil test for your gardens and your lawn, these take about 2 weeks to arrive so you will get them back in Feb. giving you time to plan. 2nd: tie up or wrap fragile plantings to protect from snow and ice 3rd: After each weather event, check your plantings, gently knock off heavy snows to reduce risk of damage and prune any damage. 4th: keep an eye on the available water in your gardens, long dry cold spells can cause severe winter burn especially on your evergreens that will result in either permanent damage or death. 5th: check your ground cover (mulch, needle, ect.) be sure you have adequate cover to protect the root zone 6th: Be sure your gardens stay clear of organic litter. Late season leaf drop can result in piles of bug food in your gardens bringing in all kinds of unwanted pests as the weather warms. Contribute report In December 2019 Reverend Cleo Fry and Deacon Harrington, of the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association, presented the Board of Directors of Aging Together with a gift of $300. Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association is headquartered in Rixeyville and serves multiple counties, including those supported by Aging Together. Originally part of the vast Northern Virginia Baptist Association formed in 1877, the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association broke off into a smaller entity by resolution in 1889 so that the transportation barriers created by irregular train service and slow horse and buggy travel might be alleviated. The name of this new body “was adopted from the Old Wayland Seminary, of which many of its founders were products, and the chain of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which dotted the area here and there.” (www.waylandblueridge. org) Twice a year the current Association identifies charities and non-profits who receive gift funding. They are interested in support-

ing agencies that are positively impacting and helping people in the community. After visiting Aging Together’s website and learning about their work and vison, Aging Together was named as one of the charity recipients. “We are truly gratified to receive this gift from Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association”, said Ellen Phipps, Executive Director. “It means so much to be searched out as a worthy organization and to be offered support. Humanitarian organizations like this one allow Aging Together to endure and continue. They enable extended partnerships and programs for the aging population and caregivers. And we appreciate that they identify with our vision of assuring local communities are age-friendly. Thank you!” A check was presented to Lisa Peacock, Board of Directors Chairperson, and Ellen Phipps, Executive Director. The mission of Aging Together is, through partnerships, to connect people to communities and resources to improve quality of life as we age. Regent Carol Simpson (L) welcomes Sally Humphries, whose patriot is Thomas McIntire from Virginia and Betsy Smith whose patriot is George Glascock, also from Virginia. The DAR is the largest service organization in the world, whose members have proven ancestors who fought or aided in the War for Independence. Headquarters for the DAR is Constitution Hall in Washington, DC and it hosts an outstanding museum and library enjoyed by the public.

CCHS track team posts season best The Culpeper County High School Blue Devils Track team put together their best performance of the year at the Roanoke College Invitational on Jan. 9. The team had 33 season best performances on the day including a new school record in the 55m dash. The following are the performers that finished top 3 in their events. Justin Aggrey was 1st in the 55 dash in the time of 6.54 seconds. That is a new school record and currently number 2 in the state for 4A. Cameron Lacy was 3rd in High Jump with a jump of 5-6. Trip Beaver was 3rd in Triple Jump with a jump of 39-4. Sidnee Addo was 1st in the 55 dash in the time of 7.80 seconds. Isabella Hardaway was 3rd in the 3200 in the time

Second Annual Mardi Gras Ball benefits SAFE Contributed report Following a very successful inaugural event in 2019, Friends of SAFE will stage the second annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball on Saturday, February 22, 2020. The event will be held at The Culpeper Center, 137 S. Main St., Culpeper from 7-11 p.m., featuring music, a live & silent auction and culinary delights from the area’s best chefs in Culpeper & surrounding counties.

Proceeds from the event will help fund the continuing renovation & operation of a second shelter that was recently donated to SAFE, as well as help to support other ongoing programs. Founded 39 years ago, SAFE provides programs that serve men, women, and children who are victims of domestic & sexual abuse in Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange & Rappahannock counties. It is the only agency providing shel-

ter for domestic & sexual violence victims in these five counties. All services are free and confidential to their clients. In FY19 SAFE assisted its clients by: Answering 660 Hotline calls on their toll-free 24 hour Hotline in FY19 Providing 3323 nights of safe, secure shelter to 82 clients in FY19 Assisting 146 survivors of domestic violence to navigate the judicial system
