Because he didn’t want to overextend himself financially, renting equipment made the most sense. So, for about the first five years, he rented brush chippers from a number of different area dealers. “Doing that kept operating costs down,” he says. “However, it also allowed me to see the good and the bad in every machine I rented. Eventually, I found myself coming back to the Morbark dealer more and more. It seemed I was always pleased with the job the Morbark did, and I really liked its reliability and durability. Based on that, and the fact that the jobs were coming in fairly regularly, I decided to purchase one outright.” All About Performance In 2005, Taylor took delivery of a Morbark Tornado 15-inch brush chipper. himself. The unit is powered by a 140 hp Caterpillar engine and, as the chipper’s name implies, it easily processes trees up to 15-inches in diameter. Additional features on Taylor’s chipper include a TorqMax™ dual feed wheel compression system which generates 6,600-foot-pounds of material pulling force; a reversing auto feed system to reduce wear and increase the life of the unit’s knives; and an option that has proven invaluable: a 5,000-pound capacity hydraulic winch. “I was debating whether or not to order the chipper with the attached winch and I’m glad we did. We see it pay dividends on almost every job we do. People don’t realize how difficult it can be to get the debris to the chipper once it’s cut. Being able to hook large limbs up to winch them in, saves a lot of wear and tear on my crew and keeps things moving along.” Good Night Irene What Hurricane Irene lacked in punch by the time she got to Maryland, she more than made up for in damage. Felled trees were seemingly everywhere; many had fallen on houses. Taylor says the impact on his business was immediate and substantial. “I was already fairly busy before Irene hit, but after that, our business probably increased by 50-75 percent,” he says. “Three months after the event, I was still looking at a backlog of trees to cut and process. Mind you, that was in addition to trying to do work for my existing client base. It was just unbelievable.” “Sometimes, I had as many as ten different jobs waiting for me at one time. When that happened, we had to prioritize. We tackled the most dangerous ones first say, one in which a tree has fallen on a house, then we would go down the list. It’s tough to tell people to wait, but the customers in a situation like that really seemed to understand.” Future Looks Bright “My business has always been built on referrals and good word of mouth,” he says. “We work hard to take care of the customer and leave the property looking like we were never there, and that’s paid off. After starting the cleanup work, word spread about the quality job we do and the phone has been ringing off the hook.” He adds that the time after the storm was demanding on him, his crew and his equipment. His crew, Clayton Glassman, Steve Nichols and Pat Johnson, answered the call nicely, working overtime as needed. “This kind of work can really tax the capabilities of a machine, but I have literally not had a single issue with this chipper,” he says. “I maintain it well and that, coupled with the support of a very good dealer in Elliott and Frantz, has helped us maintain the momentum we have. We’re excited for what lies ahead.”

Ready response effort keeps Taylor Tree busy by Jon M. Casey Since Hurricane Irene came ashore a little over one year ago, Bob Taylor and his crew has been busy with his regular clientele until recently when the area was hit once again by the remnants of Hurricane Sandy. In much the same way, Taylor Tree & Lawn Care, Inc. responded to the needs of the Harford County Maryland community to assist in the cleanup effort. In late November 2012, Bob Taylor commented on the cleanup efforts by him and his crew. “We are on call for several insurance companies here in our local area,” said Bob. “When a storm like Sandy or Irene hits, we drop what we are doing and the storm damage takes priority. We were hit very hard in this area with Sandy, so we were very busy in the past several weeks.” Taylor said that the storm damage was much like the last time with trees down on houses, trucks, sheds, horse barns, all the typical kinds of structures that are targeted by the wind blown trees as they fall. “Since Irene, we received several new customers that wanted their trees pruned to prevent future damage, so that has kept us busy along with our regular customers since Irene.

The tree that we are trimming today is one with several of its branches over a shed and a gazebo. The tree made it through Sandy but it certainly could cause damage if another storm should come through. The homeowner wanted us to prune the tree back so that it would be in better shape to withstand another storm without damaging the nearby structures.” Taylor said that his business has grown in the past couple of years because of the word of mouth referrals that Taylor Tree gets and because of their excellent rating with the Better Business Bureau. “We have an A plus rating with the BBB and customers will often check with them to select a tree company or lawn service. Our past customers are our best reference. We like to walk the grounds with our customers when the job is done to make sure that we have provided the service that they expected. If they are not completely satisfied, we stay and finish the job to their satisfaction. That helps us to maintain our integrity as a local company who is here for them.” “We are extremely happy with our Morbark Chipper,” he said. “Keith Brong is here today to deliver a parts kit upgrade for our

unit. We saw a cleanout door for the discharge chute at the TCI Expo in Baltimore earlier this month, and we ordered one to install on our chipper. Keith and Jeffrey Slebzak of Elliott & Frantz, Inc. our local Morbark dealer, are dropping it off to us here today.” Edward May, one of Bob’s two regular employees who work with him on a daily basis, said that he especially likes the Morbark Chipper because of the steady feed rate that the unit has. “Other chippers that we’ve used whip the material into the infeed at such a fast rate that they whip my backside when the branches go in,” he said. “With the Morbark, the feed rate is steadier and it doesn’t leave welts on the backs of my legs.” Bob likes the reliability and durability of the chipper as well. “With regular maintenance and service, this machine runs like new,” he said. “We bought this unit new, five or six years ago and it runs as well as it did the very first day. In Memoriam Eriez for 27 years, most recently serving as manager of the Minerals & Materials Processing Division, where he traveled extensively worldwide in growing the company’s global equipment sales to the Mining, Coal Processing, Industrial Minerals and other related industries into Eriez’ largest served markets. He was a respected member of several professional associations including the Canadian

Institute of Metallurgy, the International Minerals Association and the Society of Mining Engineers, where he served as National Committee chairman. In 2004, he received Eriez’ highest honor, Person of the Year, in recognition for “managing the Mineral Processing Division to its present key position within our Worldwide Operations.” Talented, intelligent and caring, Dan truly lived the in-

Dan Norrgran, 59, manager — Minerals & Materials Processing and Heavy Industries, passed away unexpectedly at St. Vincent Health Center in Erie on October 16, 2012. Dan was hired in 1985 as a technical representative in the Sales Department, coming from Anaconda Minerals in Tucson, AZ, where he served as technical manager — Beneficiation Applications and supervisor of the Mineral Beneficiation Laboratory. He was active throughout Anaconda’s mining/ milling operations — successfully reducing production costs by controlling operating expenses and increasing mineral recovery. Prior to that, he worked with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Twin Cities, MN as a Minerals Engineer. He participated in the engineering development of high intensity magnetic separators and developed a novel process for treating silver-manganese ores with high intensity magnetics. A native Minnesotan, he earned his BS degree in Physics from Hamline University in St. Paul, and an MS in Mineral Engineering at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where the emphasis of his work was on the electrostatic and high intensity magnetic separation of paramagnetic minerals. He then earned his MBA from Penn State University. He was a prolific writer, authoring dozens of technical papers on magnetic separation advancements which were published in professional trade journals around the world. Dan was employed at

Just the same, the damage was historic. “Some of the stumps and root balls are the size of dump trucks,” he says. “Those stumps and big wood are something the Crambo can handle. Because of the Crambo’s low speed and high torque, there is less wear on the parts and it uses a lot less fuel. We’re able to run 24 hours a day because of the reduced maintenance time.” MTL has set up a green waste yard in Hicksville, NY where they have hundreds of thousands of yards on site. There, material comes in as raw material heads back out, shredded. At 7-10,000-yards per day, Potts says there is no time for down time. MTL, is one of the teams contracted to Looks Great Services, Inc., the company overseeing the entire cleanup effort. Looks Great Services is from nearby Huntington, NY, which is on Long Island. Water and waves pounded the coastline and with New York and New Jersey’s many rivers and Harbors, the disaster that unfolded was devastating. In many places, much of the shoreline, the buildings, the boardwalks, docks and businesses, are gone. Inland flooding left five feet of water into many homes in Long Beach, NY. As a result, crews had to establish piles of demolition debris in local Parks throughout in the County. As the cleanup continues, working to shred or reduce the material and haul it away, will take months. Michael says storms like this will happen elsewhere in the future, and he plans for MTL to be ready and onsite as well. He says one of the reasons for his success is his relationship with his banker, Gene Columbus of Regions Bank, Memphis, TN. “We’ve built a level of trust” (with Regions Bank), that keeps the train running” he said. “When we have 70-80 trucks working at one time, “you really do” need a great relationship with your banker.” Debris Management Plan Michael says that he has some sound advice for county and municipal governments. “The nature of nature is that it is unpredictable,” he says. “Planning is the key. A Pre-Event Contract is like an insurance policy. You don’t want to have to use it, but if you need to, it is already in place. With a Debris Management Plan in place and having sites available and able to take large amounts of material — in the hundreds of thousands of yards — makes after storm cleanup more effective. They need to have larger identified sites for the storm damaged materials and then they need to know where that material will go after it is collected.” Future Plans When not on storm cleanups, Potts says that his core tree service businesses include residential and commercial tree work, land clearing and municipal yard debris contracts. MTL provides mulch and colored mulch and other landscape materials from their own green waste yards. Komptech’s newest factory in Oelde (NRW, Germany) recently went into operation and delivered its first machine, a Cribus 2800 trommel screen for shipment to the U.S. Komptech has factories in several locations in Europe. Its existing Oelde facility specialized in trommel screens and separation technology, and as demand for Komptech trommels continued to rise, it was obvious that a larger facility would be needed. The lease on the old plant was set to expire, so instead of renewing, the company decided that the time was right to build new from the ground up. The new factory was constructed over the course of 2012 and went into operation in early October. On October 31 the first new

trommel left the factory hall, a Cribus 2800 semitrailer. It was the first of its kind to be built anywhere, and went to a customer in the U.S. Managing director Bernd Thielepape of Komptech Germany welcomed the possibilities the new plant affords: “Our growth had simply outpaced capacity in the existing Oelde plant. Now we have room to expand, and also room to be more flexible in filling special orders. The additional stock space also lets us pre-manufacture spares so they can be available faster.” Among other things,

the larger factory features a new pass through sandblaster and a new painting and drying station, for efficient coating and rustproofing.

The facility includes 60,000-square-foot space for welding, assembly and storage, a separate 6400-square-foot painting hall, and 10,700-square-foot office space on a six acre lot.

vide 4-6 week turnaround between order entry and machine delivery. Current capacity is 120 machines per year, which can be readily increased to 200 when it becomes necessary. With this new plant, Komptech has substantially added to its capacity in the expanding trommel market, and is well prepared to execute on its growth strategy for the coming years.

This patented design decreases daily maintenance time while increasing the life of major wear components by providing the ability to reverse the grinder tips, hammers and center section of the drum. Maintenance time is decreased by the ability to remove and replace single hammers along with the ability to externally balance the drum. A range of screen configurations are compatible with the HG4000 to help meet a wide range of end product needs. With a dual-screen system, screens can be mixed and matched for the desired product. Screens are also reversible and interchangeable to maximize wear life. For overall operational efficiency, the HG4000 offers several design considerations to reduce material buildup around the machine; among them are flared infeed table sidewalls, a round top infeed chain, 60-inch wide feed table and single piece belly and discharge belt. The discharge conveyor, rated at 14-feet, can load a standard semi trailer, helping reduce the costs involved with auxiliary conveyors. Class leading trailer ground clearance enhances compatibility in off pavement applications. Bolt-in wear plates are installed on the anvil surface, mill box side plates and mill lid. This enables the economical replacement of wear surfaces without torching and welding, extending the usable life of the machine and helping to lower the cost of operation.
