Stephen Donnelly, director of marketing and public relations for the company, says that as a whole, scrap yards have gained a bad reputation because of those that aren’t kept properly. “We’re big on making sure that we’re community conscious, especially as a new neighbor,” he said. “We brought a crew from the main location in Owego to start this place.” Donnelly says that Adam Weitsman is adamant about making sure that all facilities are paved, buildings are freshly painted, that fencing and noise abatement and storm water treatment plans are in place. The new facility, which is a little over three acres, is fully paved and concreted. It’s designed for easy operation of equipment and safe, efficient traffic flow. “We want to make sure that incoming trucks not only have plenty of room to deposit, turn around and exit, but that their vehicles aren’t compromised in the process,” he said.

A new metal shop was constructed on the property for handling small lots of metals. Personnel at the weigh station are in constant communication with those in the metal shop to let them know what’s coming in. Although scrap prices are in constant flux, Donnelly says that most people who bring scrap are well aware of prices. “We pay cash right on the spot,” he said. “It’s really a pretty simple business. People come in, weigh-in with the scale master, and get an inbound weight. Then they dump whatever they have, then weigh out.”

An Enviro-Rack is in place to remove all fluids from scrap vehicles prior to shredding, and there’s a Broce Broom at each facility to make sure that the lots are kept clean and dust free. “It’ll be run several times every day,” said Donnelly. “The last thing we want is for someone to say that there’s a nail in their tire. We want to make sure everything is kept up, and we really want to make sure that as the new neighbor coming in, we have a good image. A lot of these people who don’t know about our policies will see that a scrap yard can be a nice, clean facility. We keep the machines clean and well maintained and the property attractive.”

Weitsman accepts metals including aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, lead and large items such as vehicles, appliances, radiators, and motor blocks. General manager Scott Collins says that Weitsman makes sure that the appropriate equipment to work through incoming scrap is present at each site. “Every yard we have has Sennebogen machines,” said Collins. “Typically, one machine will be using a grapple for cars and tin, and the other has a magnet to sort ferrous products. The Sennebogen has about 55-foot of reach, which allows us to stack high. Our ultimate goal is to not stockpile. Then we’ll have 100-yard walking trailers come in and the grapple will load these trucks and take it to our Megashredder® in Owego, NY. That’s where we shred the material and turn it into ‘shred’.” Collins says that they want to get everything sorted and placed appropriately as efficiently as possible. “There’s a complex chemistry behind the formulations steel mills are looking for,” he said. “The operator can make us or break us. We don’t want to throw higher value products into the tin pile, which is what we would shred. When we start getting construction materials, that’ll be another category. C&D material will go into a pile for the shredder. Our ultimate goal here is to recycle everything. If we don’t buy it, it’s ending up on the side of the road or in a landfill.

We’re a very green company.”

An open house is planned for July 23 to officially introduce Weitsman to the community. “We want to welcome people and let them know what we’re all about,” said Donnelley. “We want to be proactive, not reactive, and make sure everything is right from the beginning.”

Although Weitsman says that he was literally crushed during his first years in the business, he says he has learned a lot through toughing out the hard times. “I was clueless,” he said. “I was close to being done, but I had to work through it. Now we’re acquiring the people we used to buy from. I never had a plan to do this — never in a million years did I think I’d be here. It’s surreal now.”

Tracey Road Equipment delivers quality products and service

by Jerry and Debbie Tracey over 35 years ago has grown into a multi-line conglomerate with five locations in New York State with service to Pennsylvania. The Traceys are active in the daily operation of the business, which is based in Syracuse, NY. “We handle both trucks and construction equipment,” said Dick Ridings, director of lease and sales for Tracey Road Equipment.

“We serve both the municipal and private sectors. Our customers include heavy highway contractors, quarries, pipeline contractors, site developers, landscapers, municipalities and we’re heavily committed to serving the scrap and recycling businesses.”

Ridings says that he’s seen an upstart in sales to scrap and recycling operations, and that the company handles numerous products used in the scrap industry including material handlers, excavators with shears, wheel loaders and trucks.

“We are a full service repair and parts distributor for the products we sell,” said Ridings. “On the equipment side, we offer everything from minor repairs to complete rebuilds, custom fabrication, warranty work, welding and line boring. We do it all, minor and

major repairs. On the truck side, we have a complete testing and diagnostic system for engines, transmissions, differentials, air conditioning and New York State inspections.” Tracey Road Equipment also has a frame and collision shop with a full paint booth and custom detailing, fabrication shop with full welding services, frame rail extensions, plow and body installations.

Tracey Road Equipment maintains a hydraulic service shop and can custom make hydraulic hoses for any application. Technicians can repair or rebuild pumps, motors, valves and cylinders, and if the appropriate parts aren’t available, they can be made on site. Because they handle a number of equipment lines, Tracey Road Equipment has product specialists for each segment of the business. “We have truck specialists and equipment specialists,” said Ridings. “We have people who are specialists in street sweepers, sewer cleaners, recycling and compact construction equipment. We have the right people for the job.”

Customers who aren’t sure what they need for a job can try out new equipment on site, or Tracey will deliver to a jobsite for rent or lease. “We do daily, weekly and monthly rentals,” said Ridings. “We also offer customized

financing for trucks and equipment, tailored to our customers’ needs.”

To further serve customers, the company offers insurance services and extended warranties through their own insurance company.

Tracey Road Equipment has fully equipped, road ready service trucks and also offers a parts delivery service. “We can provide service immediately,” said Ridings. “When people call because a machine is down, we react immediately and offer solutions to their problems.”

Ridings says that the company has factory trained service personnel who are very good at what they do. “When someone has a problem, our factory trained service technicians are dispatched to the site,” he said. “We want to get the customer up and running as quickly as we can.”

Ridings says that Tracey Road Equipment’s mission statement sums up the company’s philosophy: “We want to be our customers’ fleet solutions provider, and we accomplish this by consistently delivering quality products and superior services. Each customer is different, and we try to tailor our products and solutions to that customer’s needs.”

All wear parts are different, but most everyone uses some sort of replaceable tip that is impregnated with tungsten carbide chips for longer wear life.

Tungsten Carbide, or Carbide as it is commonly called, is a combination of Tungsten and Carbon*. Tungsten, a mined natural element, is in limited supply on this Earth and the supply is decreasing rapidly as its use on new and old wear applications is increasing.

There are currently no man made substances that provide the same wear resistance for a comparable price. Therefore the price of tungsten carbide is sky rocketing, which is directly affecting the cost of your wear parts. You have prob-

ably already noticed the increase in price this past year.

A Carbide impregnated surface (or coating) provides a greater wear resistance than the base steel that the wear parts are made of, but carbide is more brittle and will break off or chip off wear part surfaces when it impacts solid objects like rock or steel.

Limiting the number of edges or surfaces the carbide is placed on can reduce your costs.

What to do: 1. Review your old tips that have already been replaced; 2. Which surfaces are wearing and which are not using YOUR grinder on YOUR material?; 3. Why pay for carbide that you are throwing away?;

4. Only pay for what you are using and it is possible to save $5 per tip; and 5. Your supplier should offer you choices, otherwise, find another supplier.

The end goal is for the individuals to successfully complete training, become AWS certified, and to ultimately become employed at Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc. Mark Luchtel, manufacturing manager at Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc., said an increase in equipment sales has led to a need for more welding professionals.

“We have seen a steady increase in business activity during the past year, as have other area manufacturers,” Luchtel said. “This has resulted in a shortage of skilled welders in the Yankton area. This AWS grant is a great opportunity for KPI-JCI to work with RTEC in recruiting promising individuals and training them to become welding professionals.”

EZ-Screen 409 trommel screener plays big role in recycling green waste into green profits Out in California’s wine country, Paso Robles Waste Disposal, Inc. is conducting a green experiment which, according to Operations Manager Ian Hoover, could result in a whole new business opportunity. Every week the

company’s trucks make the rounds of their 10,000 residential customers, picking up trash and green yard waste.

The Paso Robles experiment is focused on what can be done with all that green material,

some 350 tons a week.

“The idea,” says Hoover, “was to set up an operation to separate out the mulch and then use it in a land application manner that’s novel, natural and profitable.”

First, all the recyclable green material, such as grass clippings and yard waste, goes through a grinder. Stumps, rocks and other similar waste products are eliminated.

Next, what’s left goes

through the company’s EZ-Screen 409 Trommel Screener, purchased last August from Argus Industrial Products, where the remaining trash is screened out. The 409 Trommel Screener is perfect for this task because the constant tumbling action stirs up material over and over, adding air to lighten it, and keeps it in contact with the rotating mesh longer so more material slips through faster

and more easily. What comes out is good, clean mulch, pure and simple.

Phase two of the Paso Robles experiment involves a local ranch where the recycled mulch is disked into the soil, enriching it. As there are a great many weed seeds throughout the nutrient rich material, the resulting weeds develop into a highly desirable lush growth which serves as fodder for the ranch’s

sheep and goats.

Hoover’s goal is to be able to extend this pilot program and recycle as nutrient rich mulch as much as half of the 350 tons of weekly green waste material that’s collected, then market it to the many vineyards in the area. “This is definitely going to be a successful side line to our business,” says Hoover. “And as we

After several attempts at Sea Gull control, Cooper the Border Collie has proven to be the most successful method. During our visit to the facility, there were no birds to be seen anywhere on the property.

After a two year process, they settled on the Wilmington site and once the appropriate permitting and variances from the local officials was complete, they closed on the property in April 2009.

By June, work on the facility began and by December that year, the facility was up and running.

Today, with the addition of Waste Management into the ownership of the operation, PCC is comprised of partners including the EDiS Company, Port Contractors and The Peninsula Compost Group (TPCG).

“We work closely with the local Southbridge community,” said Widell. “We negotiated an agreement with them that provides a 24 hour hotline to receive calls about community concerns. We provide them with free compost for their homes and businesses, and we have assured them that no trucks will pass through their community when entering or leaving our facility. Most importantly, we have assured them that we will make every effort to eliminate odor and pests that are commonly associated with facilities of this kind.”

Clearly, they have accomplished their goal. As we toured WORC, there was no sign of flies or rodents.

More interestingly, there were no seagulls or birds commonly found around everything and everyone near a port. “We tried several methods of bird control,” said Widell. “After trying imitation predators, noise generators and other recommended techniques, we found that our Border collie ‘Cooper’ has been the most effective means of keeping the birds away from the site.” Indeed, Cooper’s success was obvious the day we were there.

Finished product in eight weeks!

“Everything coming or going goes across the scales,” said Widell. “From there, material is dumped in the tipping building and is put through the Doppstadt DW-3080 low speed shredder before going through the picking station and out to a new windrow. The shredder sizes the material into a 4-inch minus size. From there, once it is sorted, it goes outside to a pre-staging area, then to a new windrow.

Each windrow is comprised of 600 tons of material covered by a Gore-Tex™ fabric designed for this purpose. The entire process is a part of the Gore® Cover System, a technology that was designed and advanced by the Gore Company. According to Widell, Gore composting systems are in use at more than 200 facilities worldwide, with new proposed sites under consideration.

Once the windrows are built and in place, they are covered with the fabric, using an apparatus specifically designed for that purpose. With the windrows stretching for the better part of 100-feet and towering more than 10-feet in the air, it is amazing to watch the precision with which this process takes place.

After the covered windrow has processed for four weeks, the material is uncovered and moved to another windrow location where it is re-covered and allowed to cure for another two weeks.

“The moving of the material mixes and re-blends it which helps in the composting process,” said Widell.

“After the second phase, the compost is moved once again into a third windrow, where it is allowed to compost uncovered as its final stage before completion. Once the compost has processed for eight weeks, we put it through a Doppstadt SM-620A trommel that is outfitted with a magnet and a Doppstadt Windsifter, to remove unwanted metal and plastic.

From there, the finished material is screened through other equipment like our Powerscreen or McCloskey trommels, where the products are sized for use as composted mulch, soil amendment ingredients and various grades of compost for yard applications. We are currently blending a soil product across the road, using our McCloskey unit. All of our equipment is electrically powered as a way to reduce emissions to the surrounding area.”

Environmental concerns are number one Widell emphasized how important air quality is, as an integral part of WORC. From the safety of the workers in the tipping facility and picking station, to the outdoor odor considerations that often plague facilities of this kind, air quality has taken top priority here.

“We ventilate the tipping building moving the air from inside via four underground air ducts, to this 14,000-square-foot bio-filter,” he said. “The air in the building is replaced at the rate of four times per hour.

The feed table and feed roller pull material into the grinding chamber or reverse material away from the chamber when prompted. The operator can reverse the feed roller independently of the feed table to reposition irregular material as it enters the hammermill. Feed roller hydraulic down pressure can be applied using the remote control unit. Down pressure aids in feeding difficult material sizes and shapes.

A single piece 48-inch wide belly and discharge conveyor belt eliminates the transition point from belly to load out, helping to reduce the occurrence of plugging or bridging in some conditions.

Vermeer also enhanced the overlap of the infeed and discharge conveyors to

reduce spillage on the ground, resulting in less cleanup time under the machine.

The thrown object deflector (TOD) is designed to reduce both the quantity and distance of thrown material, allowing operation in smaller and controlled worksites. The TOD can be temporarily raised to reduce interference when loading over length or bulky material if required.

Thunder from 21 ning strikes, and Safe Electricity joined the National Weather Service in urging everyone to observe Lightning Awareness Week June 19-25. The goal is to increase awareness about the tragic loss of life and debilitating injuries that result from being struck by lightning and how to stay safe from lightning.

The National Weather Service says lightning fatalities average 58 per year, with permanent injuries to hundreds of others. More than 300 people were injured by lightning in 2008 alone. With an estimated 25 million lightning flashes annually in the U.S., a great potential exists for casualties. Protect yourself and your family from lightning with a safe storm strategy: • Be aware of weather forecasts and watch for developing thunderstorms, which occur in greater frequency in spring and summer. As the air is heated by the sun, energy is created with air movement and lightning typically comes from towering storm clouds. But as the Utah teens found out, that is not always the case; • Lightning can strike many miles ahead of a storm front. If you hear thunder, seek shelter immediately, because that indicates lightning is within 10 miles of you. If you are outside, go inside a building. If you are at a park, do not seek shelter at an open pavilion.

A building is safest; • Lightning will typically seek something tall, such as a tree, building or flagpole, but can also strike at lower objects. That was the case at Kenosha, WI

in March of 2011, when seven deer were grazing in an open field and were killed by a lightning strike. There have been reports of livestock huddling under a tree during a storm and being fatally injured when lightning hit the tree. Do not seek shelter under trees, and if you detect a tingling sensation, crouch to a low position with your head between your knees to reduce your height; • If you are inside a building, the National Weather Service advises you to stay off corded telephones, or away from any electrical device that could carry an electrical surge if lightning were carried into your home through wiring. Turn off or unplug such appliances, stay away from television sets and do not depend on surge protectors to absorb a lightning strike. Conductors can also include the plumbing in your house; and • Since water is an excellent conductor of electricity, lightning is particularly dangerous for anyone in a swimming pool or engaged in water recreation.

Swimmers, boaters, fishermen and others on lakes and rivers should seek shelter if storms are threatening and lightning is seen or thunder is heard.

Authorities warn against outdoor activity until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder is heard.

If a person is struck by lightning, call 911 and care for the victim immediately. You are not in danger of being electrocuted by the victim. More information on lightning safety can be found at www.SafeElectricity.org as well as l as www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov.

Gypsum is a natural soil aerator and is a great source of calcium and sulfate when dissolved. USA Gypsum recycles scrap gypsum drywall and manufactures lawn, agricultural and industrial gypsum products in addition to animal bedding.

The RMC continues efforts with USA Gypsum to provide feedstock leads, marketing assistance and new product evaluation. USA Gypsum is partnering with the RMC as a Center of Excellence Business to develop additional new markets for its gypsum

New McCloskey impactor designed for high production and ease of use McCloskey International is proud to announce the new I-54 impactor, designed from the ground up to be the most productive track mounted impactor in the sub 50 ton, ‘one piece move’ class.

It features a 47-inch x 53-inch four bar horizontal impact chamber with a class leading 53.3-inch x 32.5-inch feed opening to allow for high production rates and large feed sizes.

An 8.9-cubic-yard hopper with vibratory pan feeder flows material over a fully independent 4-foot-6-inch x 5-foot-9-

inch double deck inclined pre-screen, removing fines in advance of the impact chamber.

Stephen Donnelly, director of marketing and public relations for the company, says that as a whole, scrap yards have gained a bad reputation because of those that aren’t kept properly. “We’re big on making sure that we’re community conscious, especially as a new neighbor,” he said. “We brought a crew from the main location in Owego to start this place.” Donnelly says that Adam Weitsman is adamant about making sure that all facilities are paved, buildings are freshly painted, that fencing and noise abatement and storm water treatment plans are in place. The new facility, which is a little over three acres, is fully paved and concreted. It’s designed for easy operation of equipment and safe, efficient traffic flow. “We want to make sure that incoming trucks not only have plenty of room to deposit, turn around and exit, but that their vehicles aren’t compromised in the process,” he said.

A new metal shop was constructed on the property for handling small lots of metals. Personnel at the weigh station are in constant communication with those in the metal shop to let them know what’s coming in. Although scrap prices are in constant flux, Donnelly says that most people who bring scrap are well aware of prices. “We pay cash right on the spot,” he said. “It’s really a pretty simple business. People come in, weigh-in with the scale master, and get an inbound weight. Then they dump whatever they have, then weigh out.”

An Enviro-Rack is in place to remove all fluids from scrap vehicles prior to shredding, and there’s a Broce Broom at each facility to make sure that the lots are kept clean and dust free. “It’ll be run several times every day,” said Donnelly. “The last thing we want is for someone to say that there’s a nail in their tire. We want to make sure everything is kept up, and we really want to make sure that as the new neighbor coming in, we have a good image. A lot of these people who don’t know about our policies will see that a scrap yard can be a nice, clean facility. We keep the machines clean and well maintained and the property attractive.”

Weitsman accepts metals including aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, lead and large items such as vehicles, appliances, radiators, and motor blocks. General manager Scott Collins says that Weitsman makes sure that the appropriate equipment to work through incoming scrap is present at each site. “Every yard we have has Sennebogen machines,” said Collins. “Typically, one machine will be using a grapple for cars and tin, and the other has a magnet to sort ferrous products. The Sennebogen has about 55-foot of reach, which allows us to stack high. Our ultimate goal is to not stockpile. Then we’ll have 100-yard walking trailers come in and the grapple will load these trucks and take it to our Megashredder® in Owego, NY. That’s where we shred the material and turn it into ‘shred’.” Collins says that they want to get everything sorted and placed appropriately as efficiently as possible. “There’s a complex chemistry behind the formulations steel mills are looking for,” he said. “The operator can make us or break us. We don’t want to throw higher value products into the tin pile, which is what we would shred. When we start getting construction materials, that’ll be another category. C&D material will go into a pile for the shredder. Our ultimate goal here is to recycle everything. If we don’t buy it, it’s ending up on the side of the road or in a landfill.

We’re a very green company.”

An open house is planned for July 23 to officially introduce Weitsman to the community. “We want to welcome people and let them know what we’re all about,” said Donnelley. “We want to be proactive, not reactive, and make sure everything is right from the beginning.”

Although Weitsman says that he was literally crushed during his first years in the business, he says he has learned a lot through toughing out the hard times. “I was clueless,” he said. “I was close to being done, but I had to work through it. Now we’re acquiring the people we used to buy from. I never had a plan to do this — never in a million years did I think I’d be here. It’s surreal now.”

Tracey Road Equipment delivers quality products and service

by Jerry and Debbie Tracey over 35 years ago has grown into a multi-line conglomerate with five locations in New York State with service to Pennsylvania. The Traceys are active in the daily operation of the business, which is based in Syracuse, NY. “We handle both trucks and construction equipment,” said Dick Ridings, director of lease and sales for Tracey Road Equipment.

“We serve both the municipal and private sectors. Our customers include heavy highway contractors, quarries, pipeline contractors, site developers, landscapers, municipalities and we’re heavily committed to serving the scrap and recycling businesses.”

Ridings says that he’s seen an upstart in sales to scrap and recycling operations, and that the company handles numerous products used in the scrap industry including material handlers, excavators with shears, wheel loaders and trucks.

“We are a full service repair and parts distributor for the products we sell,” said Ridings. “On the equipment side, we offer everything from minor repairs to complete rebuilds, custom fabrication, warranty work, welding and line boring. We do it all, minor and

major repairs. On the truck side, we have a complete testing and diagnostic system for engines, transmissions, differentials, air conditioning and New York State inspections.” Tracey Road Equipment also has a frame and collision shop with a full paint booth and custom detailing, fabrication shop with full welding services, frame rail extensions, plow and body installations.

Tracey Road Equipment maintains a hydraulic service shop and can custom make hydraulic hoses for any application. Technicians can repair or rebuild pumps, motors, valves and cylinders, and if the appropriate parts aren’t available, they can be made on site. Because they handle a number of equipment lines, Tracey Road Equipment has product specialists for each segment of the business. “We have truck specialists and equipment specialists,” said Ridings. “We have people who are specialists in street sweepers, sewer cleaners, recycling and compact construction equipment. We have the right people for the job.”

Customers who aren’t sure what they need for a job can try out new equipment on site, or Tracey will deliver to a jobsite for rent or lease. “We do daily, weekly and monthly rentals,” said Ridings. “We also offer customized

financing for trucks and equipment, tailored to our customers’ needs.”

To further serve customers, the company offers insurance services and extended warranties through their own insurance company.

Tracey Road Equipment has fully equipped, road ready service trucks and also offers a parts delivery service. “We can provide service immediately,” said Ridings. “When people call because a machine is down, we react immediately and offer solutions to their problems.”

Ridings says that the company has factory trained service personnel who are very good at what they do. “When someone has a problem, our factory trained service technicians are dispatched to the site,” he said. “We want to get the customer up and running as quickly as we can.”

Vermeer HG6000 features new productivity enhancements and Tier 4/Stage IIIB engine PELLA, IOWA — Vermeer Corporation has redesigned the HG6000 horizontal grinder with new design enhancements and a Tier 4i/Stage IIIB engine to meet wood waste processors’ needs for productivity and government emission regulations.

“Vermeer spent considerable time redesigning

the HG6000 horizontal grinder,” says Jay Sarver, environmental sales manager for Vermeer Corporation. “The machine incorporates features that will help enhance productivity, and a new Tier 4i/Stage IIIB engine provides more fuel efficient horsepower while meeting tier regulations.”

The HG6000 is powered by a Cat C18 Tier 4i/Stage IIIB engine that meets all U.S., Canada and European Union tier regulations while producing 755 horsepower, a 20 percent increase in horsepower over the previous Tier 3 engine.

and matched to attain the desired end product. The screens are also reversible and interchangeable to obtain the maximum usage of the wear portion of the screen. Vermeer eliminated the transition area between the anvil and screen, increasing the screen area on the HG6000 by 20 percent, which allows for more throughput.

Vermeer from 7 The Series II duplex drum hammermill consists of 10 hammers and 20 cutter blocks with a 36.4-inch cutter tip diameter and 62-inch cutting width. This patented design helps to decrease daily maintenance time, while increasing the life of major wear components simply by reversing the cutter blocks, hammers and center section of drum.

A box beam style anvil — with replaceable wear surfaces on top — uses a wedge system to maximize retention while providing good resistance to bending. Additionally, serviceability is increased by providing ground level access. All hardware used to secure the anvil is located on the outside of the machine, away from the wear path of material.

Vermeer also increased the thickness of the mill box sidewalls in front of the mill, as well as made it easier for the plates between the end of the mill and sidewall to be replaced. Optional, abrasion resistant wear plates are available.

The Vermeer exclusive SmartGrind system stops and reverses material from feeding into the hammermill when engine rpm drops below a preset droop speed. This helps increase machine and jobsite productivity by reducing operator effort. The feature reduces wear to vital engine and machine components by constantly monitoring engine loading. The feed table and feed roller pull material into the grinding chamber or reverse material away from the chamber when prompted. The operator can reverse the feed roller independently of the feed table to reposition irregular material as it enters the hammermill. Feed roller hydraulic down pressure can be applied using the remote control unit. Down pressure aids in feeding difficult material sizes and shapes.

A single piece 48-inch wide belly and discharge conveyor belt eliminates the transition point from belly to load out, helping to reduce the occurrence of plugging or bridging in some conditions. Vermeer also enhanced the overlap of the infeed and discharge conveyors to reduce spillage on the ground, resulting in less cleanup time under the machine.

The thrown object deflector (TOD) is designed to reduce both the quan-

tity and distance of thrown material, allowing operation in smaller and controlled worksites.

The TOD can be temporarily raised to reduce interference when loading over length or bulky material if required.

Improved site maneuverability and a smaller turning radius were achieved by moving the fifth wheel pin under the 20-foot long infeed. This design change also allows for enhanced weight dispersal for better tow vehicle traction and reduces the load on trailer axles.

A multifunction, wireless remote allows the operator to control most operating functions from as far away as 300-feet.

This feature enhances job site productivity by allowing the operator to control machine functions from the loader vehicle while performing other functions. An optional air compressor is also available to speed up end of the day cleaning of the machine.

EZ-Screen 409 trommel screener plays big role in recycling green waste into green profits Out in California’s wine country, Paso Robles Waste Disposal, Inc. is conducting a green experiment which, according to Operations Manager Ian Hoover, could result in a whole new business opportunity.

Every week the company’s trucks make the rounds of their 10,000 residential customers, picking up trash and green yard waste.

The Paso Robles experiment is focused on what can be done with

all that green material, some 350 tons a week.

“The idea,” says Hoover, “was to set up an operation to separate out the mulch and then use it in a land application manner that’s novel, natural and profitable.”

Set up is quick and once ready for action, the 409 works well paired with1/4yard to 2-yard loaders.

First, all the recyclable green material, such as grass clippings and yard waste, goes through a grinder. Stumps, rocks and other similar waste products are eliminated.

Next, what’s left goes through the company’s EZ-Screen 409 Trommel Screener, purchased last August from Argus Industrial Products, where the remaining trash is screened out. The 409 Trommel Screener is perfect for this task because the constant tumbling action stirs up material over and over, adding air to lighten it, and keeps it in contact with the rotating mesh longer so more material slips through faster and more easily.

What comes out is good, clean mulch, pure and simple.

Phase two of the Paso Robles experiment involves a local ranch where the recycled mulch is disked into the soil, enriching it. As there are a great many weed seeds throughout the nutrient rich material, the resulting weeds develop into a highly desirable lush growth which serves as fodder for the ranch’s sheep and goats.

Hoover’s goal is to be able to extend this pilot program and recycle as nutrient rich mulch as much as half of the 350 tons of weekly green waste material that’s collected, then market it to the many vineyards in the area. “This is definitely going to be a successful side line to our business,” says Hoover.

“And as we grow this business, the 409 Trommel Screener will be able to handle its role with no problems.”

After several attempts at Sea Gull control, Cooper the Border Collie has proven to be the most successful method. During our visit to the facility, there were no birds to be seen anywhere on the property.

After a two year process, they settled on the Wilmington site and once the appropriate permitting and variances from the local officials was complete, they closed on the property in April 2009.

By June, work on the facility began and by December that year, the facility was up and running.

Today, with the addition of Waste Management into the ownership of the operation, PCC is comprised of partners including the EDiS Company, Port Contractors and The Peninsula Compost Group (TPCG).

“We work closely with the local Southbridge community,” said Widell. “We negotiated an agreement with them that provides a 24 hour hotline to receive calls about community concerns. We provide them with free compost for their homes and businesses, and we have assured them that no trucks will pass through their community when entering or leaving our facility. Most importantly, we have assured them that we will make every effort to eliminate odor and pests that are commonly associated with facilities of this kind.”

Clearly, they have accomplished their goal. As we toured WORC, there was no sign of flies or rodents.

More interestingly, there were no seagulls or birds commonly found around everything and everyone near a port. “We tried several methods of bird control,” said Widell. “After trying imitation predators, noise generators and other recommended techniques, we found that our Border collie ‘Cooper’ has been the most effective means of keeping the birds away from the site.” Indeed, Cooper’s success was obvious the day we were there.

Finished product in eight weeks!

“Everything coming or going goes across the scales,” said Widell. “From there, material is dumped in the tipping building and is put through the Doppstadt DW-3080 low speed shredder before going through the picking station and out to a new windrow. The shredder sizes the material into a 4-inch minus size. From there, once it is sorted, it goes outside to a pre-staging area, then to a new windrow.

Each windrow is comprised of 600 tons of material covered by a Gore-Tex™ fabric designed for this purpose. The entire process is a part of the Gore® Cover System, a technology that was designed and advanced by the Gore Company. According to Widell, Gore composting systems are in use at more than 200 facilities worldwide, with new proposed sites under consideration.

Once the windrows are built and in place, they are covered with the fabric, using an apparatus specifically designed for that purpose. With the windrows stretching for the better part of 100-feet and towering more than 10-feet in the air, it is amazing to watch the precision with which this process takes place.

After the covered windrow has processed for four weeks, the material is uncovered and moved to another windrow location where it is re-covered and allowed to cure for another two weeks.

“The moving of the material mixes and re-blends it which helps in the composting process,” said Widell.

“After the second phase, the compost is moved once again into a third windrow, where it is allowed to compost uncovered as its final stage before completion. Once the compost has processed for eight weeks, we put it through a Doppstadt SM-620A trommel that is outfitted with a magnet and a Doppstadt Windsifter, to remove unwanted metal and plastic.

From there, the finished material is screened through other equipment like our Powerscreen or McCloskey trommels, where the products are sized for use as composted mulch, soil amendment ingredients and various grades of compost for yard applications. We are currently blending a soil product across the road, using our McCloskey unit. All of our equipment is electrically powered as a way to reduce emissions to the surrounding area.”

Environmental concerns are number one Widell emphasized how important air quality is, as an integral part of WORC. From the safety of the workers in the tipping facility and picking station, to the outdoor odor considerations that often plague facilities of this kind, air quality has taken top priority here.

“We ventilate the tipping building moving the air from inside via four underground air ducts, to this 14,000-square-foot bio-filter,” he said. “The air in the building is replaced at the rate of four times per hour.

Even in the picking station room, the air quality is excellent.”

“The biofilter is 4-feet deep and is made up of shredded wood waste and compost,” he said.

SPRINGFIELD, IL — With record numbers of tornados and severe storms thus far in 2011, deaths and injuries from lightning strikes have also been on the rise.

Officer Jefferson “Jeff” Taylor was injured by a lighting strike on May 23 of this year while helping in the aftermath of the EF5 tornado that hit Joplin Missouri. He along with 12 other employees of the City of Riverside Missouri volunteered to

assist in the clean up efforts in the storm stricken city. Officer Taylor underwent successful skin graft surgery, but succumbed to other complications of the strike and died June 3 with his family by his side.

Earlier this month, 77 U.S. Air Force cadets

were sent to Mississippi hospitals after lightning struck a utility pole near their tents at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center near Hattiesburg. Two of the 77 who were closest to the strike were transported by ambulance and the others by bus to medical

Summer is the peak season for lightning strikes, and Safe Electricity joined the National Weather Service in urging everyone to observe Lightning Awareness Week June 19-25.

The goal is to increase awareness about the tragic loss of life and debilitating injuries that result from being struck by lightning and how to stay safe from lightning.

The National Weather Service says lightning fatalities average 58 per year, with permanent injuries to hundreds of others. More than 300 people were injured by lightning in 2008 alone.

With an estimated 25 million lightning flashes annually in the U.S., a great potential exists for casualties. Protect yourself and your family from lightning with a safe storm strategy: • Be aware of weather forecasts and watch for developing thunderstorms, which occur in greater frequency in spring and summer. As the air is heated by the sun, energy is created with air movement and lightning typically comes

from towering storm clouds. But as the Utah teens found out, that is not always the case; • Lightning can strike many miles ahead of a storm front. If you hear thunder, seek shelter immediately, because that indicates lightning is within 10 miles of you. If you are outside, go inside a building. If you are at a park, do not seek shelter at an open pavilion. A building is safest; • Lightning will typically seek something tall, such as a tree, building or flagpole, but can also strike at lower objects.

That was the case at Kenosha, WI in March of 2011, when seven deer were grazing in an open field and were killed by a lightning strike. There have been reports of livestock huddling under a tree during a storm and being fatally injured when lightning hit the tree. Do not seek shelter under trees, and if you detect a tingling sensation, crouch to a low position with your head between your knees to reduce your height; • If you are inside a building, the National Weather Service advises you to stay off corded telephones, or away from any electrical device that could carry an electrical surge if lightning were carried into your home through wiring. Turn off or unplug such appliances, stay away from television sets and do not depend on surge protectors to absorb a lightning strike. Conductors can also include the plumbing in your house; and • Since water is an excellent conductor of electricity, lightning is particularly dangerous for anyone in a swimming pool or engaged in water recreation. Swimmers, boaters, fishermen and others on lakes and rivers should seek shelter if storms are threatening and lightning is seen or thunder is heard. Authorities warn against outdoor activity until 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder is heard.

If a person is struck by lightning, call 911 and care for the victim immediately. You are not in danger of being electrocuted by the victim. More information on lightning safety can be found at www.SafeElectricity.or g as well as l as www.lightningsafety.noa a.gov .
