New crusher gives Recycle Depot Sanitation more options by Jon M. Casey

The Rubble Master RM 100 serves as one of Recycle Depot’s most important pieces of equipment. In this photo provided by Recycle Depot, the RM100 is being used to produce Item 4 aggregate, Rip Rap and other sub-base materials. At first glance, visitors to Poughkeepsie, New York’s Recycle Depot Sanitation facility, might think that this operation has been a C&D recycling operation for far longer than the five years it actually has. With Recycle Depot rollback trucks filled with construction debris, dumping their loads at regular intervals on the center’s tipping floor, we see the work of a well run operation effectively designed to handle a never ending supply of recyclable material that comes across the scales. “We have three scales on the property,” Joe “Peppy” Trocino points out as he takes us on a tour of the facility. “We have a scale for weighing trucks that come in and one for the trucks that go out of the facility. We have a third scale inside the operation where we load out the transport dump trucks that haul our unusable waste to the landfill. That scale helps us to get the

trucks loaded with the proper weight the first time. That way, they don’t have to adjust the load when they are ready to leave the facility. That saves us a lot of time and frustration.” Known for his foresight and desire to “stay ahead of the game” in business, Trocino, co-owner and CEO of this Duchess County recycling business recalled how despite only being in the recycling business for the past five years, he was well aware of the need long before they were able to process C&D material. “We began serving the area with metered concrete more than 25 years ago,” he said. “We began doing business as Mid-Hudson Structural Concrete, Inc. It was during those years that we routinely were asked about where C&D people could get rid of their waste materials. As time passed, we did extensive research and found that there was a need for a recycler to help

Once material has passed through the eight man picking system, the unusable remaining material is taken to a landfill. Trocino is looking into ways to turn this unwanted material into a marketable byproduct of his recycling business.

keep recyclable materials out of our landfills.” Trocino said that he and his wife Rita along with his brother Constantino, began to see that the construction industry in their area was heading for a downturn. It was then that they decided that it was time to consider making changes that would ultimately benefit the business and the community as well. That was in the year 2000. It was then that the Trocino’s started working on the permitting process for Recycle Depot. Their site was a property that they had owned since 1990. “It took five years to get appropriate approvals, per-

Margarita “Rita” Trocino serves as CFO and office manager.

That is when Peppy and Constantino (known as “Gus” to his family and friends) began to lay out the facility. When that was done, they began building. On March 5, 2007, we opened the doors.” The Process Peppy said that what makes their operation different from many in the area is that Recycle Depot processes, sort and reduce the waste from the waste stream which is more than the typical transfer station offers. When the material goes onto the tipping floor, they initially shred it to a 3-foot minus material for easier sorting and picking using a Vermeer Annihilator. From there, the material passes through the eight man picking station, where workers positive pick material such as plastic, glass, wood, cardboard, metal, wire and concrete from the mix with the remainder of unusable material going to approved landfills. From the recycled materials, they are able to produce marketable products such as topsoil and clean fill as well as wood mulch. Rita said that in the early years of recycling, they rented a tub grinder to grind wood into mulch, but found that because of the need to produce a variety of materials that sometimes would require a second or third grinding, it was more cost effective and efficient for their needs to purchase a grinder rather than rent one. So in 2011, they purchased a Diamond Z 1460 Tub Grinder. Recycle Depot specializes in colored mulch, which they sell in three colors, red, brown and black. “We color our mulch with Greenville Colorant Powder because we have found that the color lasts longer after it is put on site,” he said. “This gives our customers more decorative material for a longer period. We sell the mulch to landscapers and residentially in bulk. It is available for delivery in a roll off container, if the customer prefers.” This year, seeing the need for a crusher to help expand their recycled asphalt and concrete business in similar fashion, they purchased a Rubble Master RM 100 2.0 from COR Industries. Having seen the RM100 in operation at demonstrations at other locations, Peppy said that his primary reason for going with the RM 100 was its size and quiet operation. Now, they are able to crush and screen concrete and asphalt that they receive and turn it into value-added products. “With the RM 100, we make item 4 aggregate for use as sub base material and clean fill,” he said. “These crushers are powered by an onboard generation system that powers electric motors to do the crushing

and screening. That makes them very quiet. That is a real plus when it comes to being a good neighbor.” “We also produce Rip-Rap and mill ends when the customers call for it. By owning our own machines gives us more flexibility to make material and provide specific blends of recyclables to meet the individual customer’s needs,” he added. “We primarily sell these materials to local excavation companies.” The People Trocino said that Recycle Depot employs approximately 30 people, with the business offering a full line of services that include six roll off trucks that service the 300 containers for C&D waste, that range in size from 10 to 40-cubic-yards. The roll off containers available for construction and demolition debris, bulky waste, trash and recyclable materials that include wood, cardboard, concrete, brush and metal. They offer weekly residential and recycling curbside garbage service throughout the Hudson Valley and are open to all commercial haulers, remodelers and the public for drop off of recyclable waste. Keeping up with the latest in recycling, Recycle Depot also offers an E-waste program. “We accept all construction and demolition debris which is ideal for remodelers, small contractors and homeowners who need a place to take their materials when they are doing home remodeling projects,” said Peppy. “If someone wants to clean out their basement or garage, this is the perfect place to bring all of that material.” Rita noted that it is their people that make things happen. She said that Peppy’s brother Gus takes care of the daily operations of the materials processing while Peppy manages the overall operation. Rita serves as the chief financial officer while their daughter Cassandra handles the weigh master responsibilities. Another important member of the staff is Nancy Thomas-Finn, director of Sales and Marketing. “She is the one who keeps the business coming in and

Brothers Constantino and Joseph Trocino, work together to oversee Recycle Depot’s daily operations. finding new outlets for our recycled products,” Rita added. Today, as Recycle Depot continues to grow as one of the Hudson Valley area’s leading providers of solid waste collection, transfer, recycling, disposal and dumpster rental services they serve as members of the U.S. Green Building Council, with certified LEEDS accreditation for all post consumer waste both residential and commercial. For more information, contact them at 845-452-3939 or online at www.recycledepotfacility.com.

COR Equipment Sales helps Recycle Depot increase profits COR Equipment Sales, exclusive dealer for Rubble Master Equipment in the northeastern U.S., first started working with Recycle Depot in 2008. “We had a small demonstration of an RM100 at our facility and we invited Peppy Trocino for the event,” said D.J. Cavaliere, co-owner of COR. “This was the first RM100 crusher to be imported into the US. Peppy was very impressed with the compact size, the low noise, the production and especially the quality of the manufacturing of the machine.” “When the time came for Recycle Depot to consider owning their own crusher, they came to us. We rented them an RM100 for a month and they were completely satisfied. In early 2012, Recycle Depot purchased their own RM100 2.0 and it has been operating at their facility since. As a part of the purchasing process, COR took Peppy to Linz, Austria to the Rubble Master factory. “That was on one of my customer visit trips,” said D.J. “As Rubble Master does with its customers, Peppy was able to see the assembly process, the quality of the facility and how dedicated the Rubble Master employees are

to the manufacturing of their products and to their customer’s success.” “COR Equipment was founded in 2006 by my brother Lou Cavaliere and me,” noted D.J. “We come from the excavation, paving and milling sector of the construction industry. Lou and I saw a need for this type of machine and the need for the mobile crushing business.” “As we began the business, we would perform mobile onsite crushing with the Rubble Master product. This gave us the opportunity to learn the business and most importantly market the Rubble Master product line. Since then we have built a solid customer base, which in turn gave our purchasing customers the opportunity to buy an RM and know that there are customers looking for companies to crush for them.” “COR Equipment has grown significantly since 2007, and by that we mean it has grown through our customer’s successes,” he added. “Over the years, we have found that we do not measure our size by how many employees we have or how big our facility is, we measure it by how our customers have

become more profitable by starting another revenue stream with crushing. Unlike a typical equipment dealer that carries five to ten lines of equipment that requires a large sales staff to move that inventory, COR Equipment operates differently. We want our customers to think of us as a ‘personal dealer,’ rather than an ‘equipment dealer.’” “We offer two product lines and our anchor product is the Rubble Master crusher,” he said. “We feel that by concentrating on one main product, we can dedicate 100 percent of our time to the Rubble Master clientele. Our successes can only come from our customer’s successes. What more would a customer want?” As of 2012 COR now maintains over 20 Rubble Master units though our Stamford, CT shop. We provide sales, rentals, service & parts but most of all we offer unequalled, personal customer support. Ask the Ginder Guy Hey Grinder Guy, does it make a difference what type of hole I use on my Grinder Screens? This is one of the most overused benefits made by all kinds of Salespeople, Operators and Manufacturers. My screens are round and they give me a better product! My screens are hexagons and they give me a better product! My screens are a square and they give me a better product! I’ve heard it all. And all may be correct. They all may be wrong also. So lets figure out what they are really saying. Here are some facts: • The same size hole does not give the same size product in all materials. Green wood is different than dry wood, logs are different than yard waste, etc. The more moisture in materials, you will need a larger screen to be able to grind it. Dry wood requires a smaller screen because you need much more cutting action on all the pieces for consistency. • The thicker the screen, the more baffling effect you will get, which means more fines • Screens cut on an angle will give you less fines and more production but also larger material • A great piece of advice from Lori Rheinberger of QueenofParts.com, an Aftermarket Manufacturer: As a rule of thumb, 70 percent of your material will be 1/2 the dimension of your

screen size or smaller. So, for example, with 4 inch screens, 70 percent of your material should be 2” minus with the balance being larger than 2”. Good rule to start from when trying to size a product initially. Any screen you buy, from the OEM or Aftermarket Manufacturer, are all design engineered before they are cut, unless you and your torch are making them in your shop. On every engineered drawing the actual open hole space should be shown. That and only that can actually compare 2 screens and how they compare to the actual product and production versus each other. Because if a screen doesn’t have the same open area, they are not equal. What does that mean? With 4” screens, maybe 50 percent of the actual screen is open space for material to fall through and the other 50 percent is the steel framework making the 4” holes. If you increase to 6”, that open space may increase to 60 percent, thus more production and larger product. But what about using the same dimension? For example: • A round 1 1/2” hole measures an area of 1.77 square inches • A square 1 1/2” hole measures an area of 2.25 square inches • That is over 25 percent more open space in the square hole • This means you will get larger pieces in the square hole and more production. • Multiply the 25 percent times every

A diamond-shaped screen like this one will produce a different kind of material than the square-holed screen seen below it in this photo. Sometimes diamond-shaped screens are used for material with higher moisture content. hole in the screen and you see how much more open space is in the screen and how your production will increase because of it. In addition, when the square hole pattern is layed out on the steel for cutting compared to a round hole, the pattern lays out much more efficiently creating more holes, which means much more production because of the extra space created by the extra holes. So the operator that says, “My square hole gives me a better product” might be comparing his production to a round hole screen.

But because the Round hole screen is smaller and then will have less holes per screen, it will make a finer product than the square screen, which the other operator may say, “My round hole gives me a better product” because he has smaller material. Lastly, the hexagon, which seems to be the latest greatest in the industry. Layed out for cutting on steel plate it is probably the most efficient. But be careful, because a 2” hexagon does not have the same dimension area as a 2” square

EarthSaver Equipment, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of Paul Elias to our nationwide sales team. With two and a half decades of industry experience, we are very excited to have Paul joining us as our Western Region Sales Manager for Used Equipment; representing Earthsaver Equipment in the states of California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii. chase or consignment, and sale, of all equipment used for recycling wood and greenwaste materials, specifically; tub grinders, horizontal grinders, screening equipment and composting equipment. Twenty-five years ago Paul joined us as the manager of a new greenwaste recycling facility in Berkeley, CA, called Recycled Wood Products, Inc., a real gamble for him as recycling wood and greenwaste was not actually considered recycling in the 1980s and there were no markets for the finished products. Paul’s dedication and enthusiasm helped us establish some of the first wood and greenwaste recycling facilities in the country; including facilities in Hurffville, NJ (south of Camden), Woburn, MA (north of Boston), Tampa, FL, and Berkeley, CA. where we demonstrated how to recycle greenwaste materials into something useful. The facilities were the first permitted sites in several states and were on the conference circuit day trips where many public officials were able to see for the first time how they could recycle their greenwaste. After working with our recycling facilities for several years Paul moved on to selling new grinders and other wood and greenwaste recycling equipment throughout the western states. Paul is a very valuable resource to EarthSaver Equipment as well as our customers. We believe that he embodies

the level of character, knowledge, professionalism and integrity that really personifies EarthSaver within the industry and furthers our goal of contributing to the success of wood or greenwaste recycling operations. You can call Paul on his direct line at: 530402-8000; e-mail: paul@earthsaverequipment.com We at Earthsaver Equipment believe heavy equipment sales requires nation-

wide advertising and promotions, but with a local presence. With the addition of Paul EarthSaver Equipment now has four locations to serve our customers including: Sacramento, CA; Dallas, TX; Atlanta, GA; and our headquarters in Kalispell, MT. Cherry wins 2012 AGC APEX award for deconstruction of 711 Polk in downtown Houston HOUSTON, TEXAS — Houston-based Cherry, specialists in industrial demolition, dismantling, asset recovery and recycling, has won a 2012 APEX (Award for Project Excellence) Award from the Houston chapter of Associated General Contractors (AGC) in AGC’s bi-annual award ceremony held recently. AGC honored Cherry for its safe and efficient deconstruction of 711 Polk, a 28-story former hotel in downtown Houston in 2011. Cherry used a much slower, floor-byfloor deconstruction method in order to remove the high-rise with-

out negatively impacting an immediately adjacent 35-story office building (Total Plaza), an acrossthe-street Hotel (Hyatt Regency) and cars and pedestrians on the streets below. Project planning began in mid-November 2010, work commenced in early January 2011 and the job was completed in September 2011-on budget and well within the time frame established by its owner, Brookfield, and Houston city officials. “We’re most pleased that AGC is recognizing our work with one of the industry’s most presti-

Here is an example of the higher number of square holes that a screen can accommodate. hole, but just by having more holes, it will give you more open space and more production. So the operator that says, “My hexagon hole gives me a better product”, may be comparing his production to a square hole he used previously. You never know what the comparisons truly are? In conclusion, what do we do? • Try different screens • Ask your supplier for engineered drawings so you can compare open area of the screens

• Ask your supplier what customers are buying now compared to last year or the year before • Thinner is better for production quantity and fines reduction • Try to get screens that are angle cut to increase production and reduce fines I have some photos posted at www.askthegrinderguy.com for you to compare and review. gious awards,” said Mike Dokell, manager of Cherry’s Commercial, Interior and Residential Demolition Division. “The 711 Polk project presented a complex challenge. We could not use traditional deconstruction methods to take it down because

it was located right next to a 35-story office building and across the street from the Hyatt Regency hotel. And, we needed to minimize our impact to pedestrians and cars in the streets below. “Even though it took longer, we removed the

building one floor at a time in order to carefully manage debris, dust and noise levels. We proved that our 45 workers could function effectively as a team and successfully coordinate our activities with our customer and a large number of city officials.”

Cherry recycled nearly 99 percent of the building’s deconstruction debris, which included approximately 3,000 tons of carbon steel, 30,000 tons of concrete, 25 tons of aluminum and four tons of copper.

The all new Cribus series of drum screens from Komptech comes with patented “Wheelgrip” technology. The larger two models, Cribus 3800 and 5000 have a drive system which consists of four electronically driven wheels and a fifth wheel that provides downward pressure if the machine ever senses drum slippage. So what does this mean for the customer? This system offers 10 percent less energy consumption, less costs for wear parts, and minimal down time. Because there are no chains and sprockets changing between drums has now been reduced to 5 minutes. The “Wheelgrip” system also offers much more flexibility in drum speed. With frequency controlled electric motors, drum speed can be infinitely adjustable between 8 and 20 RPM, allowing the customer to accurately adjust the speed for varying materials. Along with the “Wheelgrip” the Cribus line comes with “Hybrid” Technology as

From Waste to Wealth by Laura Stoneburner, Ironclad Marketing, Inc. Ramirez & Sons increases output and profits with IROCK RDS-15 Crusher

Concrete in the distance will be crushed and screened in the near future. The IROCK RDS-15 will process it into several grades of usable material. HOBBS, NM – Wasting time. Wasted energy. Wasteful spending. Regardless of industry, waste is one of the most detrimental and costly factors in a business. One New Mexico based construction company was able to turn what used to be tons of waste into big profit with the help of a single crushing machine from IROCK. Ramirez & Sons, Inc. construction company purchased the IROCK RDS-15 crusher less than one year ago, and has already seen the machine take lagging production rates to impressive new heights. In addition, the company has grown its customer base and profits along the way. Looking To Grow Ramirez & Sons is a family owned company, formed in 1982. The company is built on generations of industry experience dating back to the 1920s. Now led by fourth generation contractor, Alonzo Ramirez Jr.,

Ramirez & Sons is the second largest paving and aggregate provider in southeastern New Mexico, employing more than 65 professionals at its corporate office in Hobbs, NM. Ramirez & Sons began as a general earthwork and construction company, serving a client base of both municipal and private contractors in Hobbs, Lovington and surrounding areas. Today, the company offers general excavation, site prep, highway paving, and both water and sewer utility work. In 2010, the company enhanced its capabilities even further with the addition of its first hot mix asphalt plant. In addition to contracting services, Ramirez & Sons also sells material for use in hot mix asphalt, building pads and as base layers for road building. This segment of the business is led by Ken Smith, plant manager and crushing/hot mix superintendent.

This paving crew is ready to lay down the asphalt material being dumped into this Vogele Vision 5203-2 paver.

“Historically, the company has been primarily involved in asphalt recycling,” he said. According to Smith, Ramirez & Sons had previously produced four different size materials: 3/4-inch, 3/8-inch, fines and base coarse. The company both sold the material and used it in its hot-mix plant for its own paving work. While asphalt recycling has certainly provided extra profits, Smith felt there was more material he could be recycling, and that substantial money was being left on the table. “We were wasting a lot of material,” said Smith, a newer member of the Ramirez & Sons team. Because the company was only recycling asphalt, it was missing other saleable materials, particularly concrete. Recycled concrete and other aggregates are useful in many applications, and being able to provide highquality material would potentially bring new customers to Ramirez & Sons. Not only that, he figured the company would be able to use the material in its own operation, cutting time and costs associated with outside material purchases. While the benefits were clear, Ramirez & Sons simply wasn’t in a position to make a move; the company’s crusher wasn’t able to process concrete and other aggregates. Without the right crusher, the company lacked the versatility needed to enter into concrete and aggregate processing services. Smith also noted that production rates weren’t as high as he felt they could be, coming in at a daily rate of roughly 120 TPH. The equipment should have been producing more, but there were many issues with breakdowns and excessive downtime. Again, it wasn’t as simple as sheer output volume. End product quality wasn’t up to par either, and a lot of potentially usable material was being left as waste. That all changed when Smith met with Ramirez & Sons’ long time equipment dealer, Warren CAT, to explore new machines that could amp up production and allow the company to offer larger amounts of more saleable material. A Solution That Rocked Warren CAT is one of the largest and fastest growing

Ramirez Rameriz29

Ramirez Ramerizfrom 28 Caterpillar dealerships in North America. The company operates more than 16 locations in Oklahoma and west Texas, offering new, used and rental equipment. Throughout his years in the industry, Smith always worked with Warren CAT for equipment needs, as well as parts and service. Warren CAT was already Ramirez & Sons’ exclusive dealer, so there was no question of who Smith would call when he set out to find a new machine. Brian Hutchinson, Ramirez & Sons’ contact at Warren CAT, spoke with Smith to find out exactly what he was looking for in a new crusher. First, Hutchinson gained insight into Smith’s pain points with his existing crusher — primarily, lagging production and excessive downtime. Next, the two discussed Smith’s goals and expectations of the new machine — greater output, more processing capabilities and high uptime. After learning both, Hutchinson felt he had the solution — an IROCK crusher. He knew of one that was available at one of Warren’s sister locations in Odessa, Texas. The particular unit, IROCK’s RDS-15, was a four bar impactor, three-stage mobile crusher that could process a variety of materials, including concrete and other aggregates, at impressive tonnage rates that could double Smith’s hourly output. It sounded like a great fit for Ramirez & Sons, so Hutchinson put Smith in touch with Bill Reiner at Warren CAT’s Odessa location. Smith made the trip south to look at the machine. About 175 miles and a few days later, Smith said, “It was sitting in our yard.” Though Smith was confident the RDS-15 was the solution to the company’s low production rates, Ramirez & Sons decided first to lease the machine and see how it would stand up to the company’s high standards and demanding production schedule. In just two months, the company purchased the machine, cementing its place as the primary crusher in the company’s fleet. Smith has been operating the RDS-15 for less than a year, but already has seen production rates soar from about 120 TPH to approximately 300 TPH. While that’s more than double, and impressive, the impact of the new unit really adds up in the bigger picture. Based on a typical 12 hour day and an average six day week, tonnage output has gone from 8,640 tons per week to 21,600. In addition to sheer output quantity, the company also has been able to diversify its sales offerings from four products to nearly 15, including various sizes of recycled concrete, aggregates and asphalt. “The machine has its own double deck screen,” Smith explained. “I'm able to easily change out the bottom screen, which allows us to produce different sizes we hadn’t been able to with other machines.”

Alonzo Ramirez III smiles for the camera from aboard one of the company’s graders. Additionally, the configuration options enable Ramirez & Sons to produce three different materials at once. The impact aprons are easy to adjust for precise sizing, as well. This offers Smith the versatility and efficiency of producing multiple products at once, while ensuring they’re accurately sized for best sale potential. As Smith expected, Ramirez & Sons’ newfound diversity has opened up the company to a new customer base and more opportunity. Most notable is the oil boom happening in Hobbs and nearby cities. Several oil companies use Ramirez & Sons’ 3/4-inch minus material, primarily for parking lots and temporary roads. “That has been one of the biggest areas of growth for us,” Smith said. “The oil boom here is incredible.” While increased production rates and profits are both great benefits, Smith says the primary one is “zero waste.” “I can honestly say we’re no longer wasting any material,” Smith said. “It’s remarkable.” Ramirez & Sons now offers a variety of material sizes, from 3/8-inch minus to 5/8-inch minus to 1-inch minus. The products are used in a variety of applica-

Ramirez’s processing plant manufactures several grades of aggregate material.

tions, including hot mix, road base, subbase, and building pads. The company also produces specialty size material for specific applications. For example, a septic system’s base lines require a larger rock, from 1 to 3-inches in size. Smith says with just a simple adjustment his RDS-15 can produce it quickly and precisely. Often overshadowed by the high production rates and lack of material waste is the simple reliability of the crusher. It’s not that Smith has ignored the high uptime; he certainly recognizes it. Rather, he hasn’t really had to pay attention. “It seems like you can always remember the times your equipment has failed on you,” he said. “On the flip side, when a machine runs smoothly and doesn’t require attention, it’s easy for it to go unnoticed. Ironically, it’s the machines that do their job and run like they’re supposed to that almost seem like they’re forgotten. But that’s really when you should be taking notice, and I credit the RDS-15 for its reliability.” Smith’s philosophy is, as long as it’s running, he’s happy. And that’s important to a company that operates up to 12 hours a day, six days a week. In addition to worry free operation, the machine requires little attention. Maintenance requirements have been minimal. One unique feature that contributes to this is IROCK’s innovative ROCK BOX, an alternative to discharge chutes found on similar units. The ROCK BOX uses a shelf system with abrasion resistant wear bars that allow crushed material to build up and act as a wear liner, cutting down on costly wear liner replacement. Smith also points out the minimal wear he has seen on the machine. Compared to crushers he has used in the past, IROCK’s machine has impressed him in terms of longevity of wear parts. Blow bars are a prime example. Compared with other crushers that needed new bars within four weeks he’s only had to rotate the bars once in more than 1,400 hours of operation with the RDS-15. “I haven’t yet been able to accurately quantify our maintenance and downtime savings from the RDS-15, but I can tell you both have gone down sharply while production has more than doubled,” Smith said. The RDS-15 has been a welcome addition to the Ramirez & Sons fleet. In fact, Smith is already leasing a second IROCK crusher, the RDS-20. It’s similar, but it offers more screening area and a larger vibrating feeder.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Donaldson Company, Inc., a leading worldwide manufacturer of filtration systems, is pleased to feature its newest family of Torit® brand PowerCore® dust collectors — the new VH Series — designed to meet the specific requirements of applications with abrasive dust in the metalworking and mining markets. Donaldson Torit will showcase the VH Series collector at MINExpo International 2012. Like the PowerCore CP Series collectors for the baghouse market, the new PowerCore VH Series collectors are designed to be smaller and smarter. Smaller as the VH Series takes up less valuable floor space — up to 70 percent less than some baghouses and cartridge collectors. Smarter as the design of the VH collector reduces labor costs and downtime with easy, time-saving filter change-outs with no confined spaces to

in which to maneuver. The Torit PowerCore VH Series collectors can handle airflows of 5,000 to 40,000 cfm. Like the CP and TG Series, the VH Series utilizes PowerCore filter packs. One PowerCore VH filter pack replaces up to 20 8-foot baghouse bags and up to three standard, round cartridges.Comparing the VH series to a traditional 13,600 cfm, 162-bag baghouse, the VH Series — using 8 filter packs – occupies a 70 percent smaller footprint, is 50 percent shorter and uses 95 percent fewer filters. That's 154 fewer filters to change. When compared to a cartridge collector, the VH Series is approximately 40 percent smaller and uses 16 fewer filters. Fewer filters mean reduced maintenance and downtime for the operation. To better handle the harsh environment created by abrasive dusts, the

PowerCore VH Series features heavy gauge steel and all-welded construction. Its single hopper option and single air inlet/outlet reduce ducting, installation and material handling costs. And, unlike other collectors, the VH Series includes a zero-turn pulse cleaning system, which forces dust directly down into the hopper, which decreases the chance of re-entrainment on adjacent filters. Flex-Mat® 3 tackles tough conditions After beginning his career in construction and demolition (C&D), Tim Lipsmeyer and a partner bought a small mobile recycle plant in 1997 to produce recycled asphalt and concrete. Southern Crushing, a Mississippibased operation, now produces 1/2-inch-minus recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) used for road projects in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas. Depending on the volume of fines in the material being screened, the plant can produce upwards of 140

tph. However, it had been experiencing blinding and pegging of its 1/2-inch steel woven wire due to the sticky nature of the recycled asphalt. Many days, Lipsmeyer was being forced to shut down for 30 minutes every two hours to clean the screen media that was blinding up to six inches deep. Each day, losing two hours of production time was costing the operation over 200 tons of potentially sellable material. So, Lipsmeyer turned to Major Wire’s Flex-Mat® 3 Tensioned

screen cloth to eliminate the blinding problem and increase his potential monthly sellable product by at least 4,000 tons. “We had been offered a job in northeast Arkansas requiring that we screen asphalt in the winter, which is a nightmare because the wet asphalt sticks so badly,” states Lipsmeyer, Owner of Southern Crushing. “I had seen advertisements for Flex-Mat 3, so I decided to give it a chance. In spite of my skepticism, Flex-Mat 3 was the first

product that did what it said it would.” Southern Crushing employs a portable Eagle 500-05 crusher and two 4-foot x 14-foot doubledeck Cedarapids tensioned screen boxes. Inspec material is screened through by the bottom decks and the oversized product is re-circulated back through the crusher. Previously, when there was precipitation of any kind, the screen media would blind and the operation couldn’t run. So, Lipsmeyer first tried

Flex-Mat® 3 stainless steel slotted screen media on the bottom deck of one screen to eliminate the problem. But, it caused another problem, allowing oversized product to fall through, resulting in outof-spec product stockpiles. He was forced to switch back to square woven wire and deal with the blinding or use 3/16inch wire openings. Major Wire Industries Limited’s Flex-Mat 3 High-Performance, SelfCleaning Screen Media provided a better solution. Available for flatsurface and tensioned screen decks, it allows producers to increase screen open area, create more screening action with the vibrating wires and eliminate blinding and pegging problems to achieve more throughput of spec material. Its distinctive lime-green polyurethane strips bond individual wires, and allow them to vibrate independently at different frequencies. With more screening action, more properly sized material falls through instead of sticking to the wire. “Now, we use Flex-Mat

3 Tensioned panels on the bottom deck of one screen with a 1/2-inch opening,” Lipsmeyer stated. “We are able to produce spec RAP and clean out fines from crushed concrete no matter how wet it is. We can even screen in a complete downpour.” Since purchasing FlexMat 3 from Major Wire, Southern Crushing has screened more than 40,000 tons over the original panels-which are still operational and being used today. The operation even ran through winter, only stopping when the snow fall got so heavy that it compromised the belts and froze up the screen box. When asked about the future relationship between Southern Crushing and Major Wire, Lipsmeyer replied, “I very seldom buy anything that works like it says it will. With this kind of success, Flex-Mat 3 will definitely be a part of Southern Crushing’s future.” For more information, contact Tim Lipsmeyer at 901-409-1224, email plsmo21@yahoo.com or visit www.majorwire.cc.

read LCD screen with onboard diagnostics, analog/digital gauges, and vital system indicators. Two ergonomically positioned sealed switch modules simplify operation and convenience controls. The auto shutdown feature turns off the engine after an owner determined period of inactivity to help save fuel while reducing emissions, idle time operation and subsequent wear on the power train and hydraulics. An On Board Weighing (OBW) system allows contractors to view the weight and the number of loads carried via JDLink™, improving project management and equipment utilization. This OBW system not only allows the customer to track and optimize payload performance of an E-Series ADT, but will also aid in maximizing the life of the tires and chassis. The truck has mirror mounted load indicator lights that illuminate for the loading operator as the truck approaches capacity (yellow), is at capacity (green), or overload (red). An integrated tire pressure monitoring system helps maximize traction, tire life and fuel efficiency and access to JDLink Ultimate allows customers to

check tire pressures remotely and receive alerts when the pressure gets too low or too high. For those fleet managers, owners or operators looking to get the most out of their equipment, a standard three year subscription of JDLink Ultimate continuously collects and transmits machine data for machine management. The system enables timely preventive maintenance and remote diagnostics, as well as the coordination of machines working on multiple jobsites to get the right machine to the right place at the right time. Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) is a world leader in providing advanced products and services and is committed to the success of customers whose work is linked to the land — those who cultivate, harvest, transform, enrich and build upon the land to meet the world’s dramatically increasing need for food, fuel, shelter and infrastructure. Since 1837, John Deere has delivered innovative products of superior quality built on a tradition of integrity. For more information, visit John Deere at www.JohnDeere.com.
