Stratford Baling is a “Crown Jewel” in Connecticut's Murphy Road Recycling

Casey From the time that Murphy Road Recycling acquired the Stratford Baling Volume Reduction Facility on Garfield Avenue in Stratford, CT, Director of Operations, Jonathan Murray and his staff have been making improvements to the site. Currently, it is one of the most modern and efficient dual stream recycling facilities on the East Coast.

Murray recalled the previous operation was being used as a transfer station for C&D waste and there was a single stream paper recycling operation there as well. By the time that Murphy Road Recycling purchased the property in September, 2008, the facility had fallen into major disrepair. The surrounding community thought very poorly of what was there at the time. Overall, the facility

was not up to the standards of excellence for which Murphy Road Recycling is known, so it was at this time that they con-

sidered C&D processing as a way to improve the efficiency of the facility.

“As a company, we had been in C&D recy-

cling at some of our other locations like East Windsor and Waterbury since the 1980s,” he said. “There, we have

been using Continental Biomass Industries, Inc. (CBI) equipment to grind wood for years. We had good experience with

their equipment in the past. We operate a CBI 4600, an 8600 and a 4000 in addition to a

CBI Shear. So, because of that relationship, we asked them to give us a design proposal for Stratford.”

“We liked what they came up with, and work on the new system began in late 2010,” he said. “With the permitting, clean up and fine-tuning at start up, it took us about 18 months to get the system on line. Since then, the system has worked very well.”

Murray said that besides the installation of the new CBI system, they completely repaved the site and added a new inbound/outbound scale system in the process. They installed a new

roof on the building and completely resided the structure as well. Using a current expression, this was truly an “Extreme Makeover!”

“While we are located in an industrial park that is home to other heavy industries and trucking companies, we have residential neighbors adjacent to our property in the rear. We want to be a good neighbor, so as we developed our remodeling plan, we were always mindful of the people around us,” he said.

The new system provides both single and double ground wood materials, for a variety of uses. They produce recycled

wood products for mulch, biofuels, wood for pelletizing, and other ground wood products that consumers might need. Currently, there are three or four wood products being shipped.

Additionally, the facility produces recycled concrete material for local contractors who need a material as clean fill. Most of the paper material that once would have come to this location is taken to the Murphy Road Recycling facility in nearby Bridgeport, CT. That site specializes in recycling paper waste.

Murray said they added a new baling system as a part of the improvement project. They are constantly baling the waste residue that is not recyclable. The bales are staged, and then transported

to an approved landfill in Ohio, on a regular basis.

While Murray is busy overseeing other facilities in Murphy Road Recycling, the day to day operation of Stratford Baling is under the watchful eye of Site Manager, Mike Schauer. Mike is a long time employee with Murphy Road Recycling and does an excellent job of making certain the operation runs smoothly. Sean Vasseur serves as Mike’s right hand man, working as an equipment operator and maintenance manager, a job that keeps him hopping all of the time. “We have an outstanding crew at this facility,” said Murray. “We appreciate all that they do for us there.”

Op-Ed by Dave Whitelaw While researching for this month’s “Hey, GrinderGuy” article, I was struck by the responses I received and the respondent’s utter lack of optimism in our industry’s business community. “Would you could you if you could? Would you could you if you should?” I asked in a Dr. Seuss kind of way. Where is the optimism?

I didn’t find any! There is no excitement. There are no lofty projections.

“We are trying to get by,” I heard. “We are holding our own,” people have said. “We are trying to maintain,” others replied. These are the kinds of things I am hearing out in the business community.

If the Democrat Guy gets reelected, does that mean we are going to fold

up and walk away? There is no doubt the vast majority of business owners are Republicans. At least according to my observations, in this business they are.

If the Republican is elected, it would certainly change the attitude of these owners, however, we are still in the same ballgame. We will just have a different pitcher.

We will still have the

same debt, the same two party system, and the same Congress.

What’s the basic problem? To my thinking, there are no “free rides.”

Somewhere, this truth has gotten lost. Children no longer seem to be taught that hard works pays off and gets you anywhere you want to go if you work for it.

So, what is going to create optimism for every-

one? What will create a sense that we are going in the right direction? I’m not certain. We better figure it out soon, while we still have a chance.

Weather is the number one driving force every year. This year is no different. We started off well, then crashed and burned soon after. Now what?

I spoke to a half dozen business owners and found a few things to consider to help us salvage the year. Here are some of those ideas: • Inventory — This one is pretty easy. Reduce inventories, not only for your finished products, but for your raw materials as well. Limit your ordering. Have a sale. Lower contract prices to increase shipments.

• Renegotiate — Your suppliers are in the same boat that you are. Renegotiate to stock your inventory at a lower dollar value. This will lower your average cost per unit across the board and it will increase your profit next year.

• Don’t be afraid to lay

seasonal workers off early. It can be a long, expensive Winter. If you don’t have the work, let them go.

• “Get rid of your leeches” — This advice came from a friend in Atlanta.

It will save you the stress next year. If customers don’t pay, send them packing. Slow pay is no pay. Let them go. You are not a bank. Next year you will be much happier.

• Work with Friends — Friends make you money and support you when you need it. Buy their material and offer them bargains in return.

• Find new clients — Maybe your old clients are not selling like they use to. Get going finding some new ones.

Last year’s drought of raw materials in the Mulch business has given way to a flood of material and cheaper prices this year. At the same time, it seems people do not have the money to carry that material for the winter. That is leaving a lot of suppliers high and dry. Work with your suppliers to help keep them afloat. You will need them sooner or later. Pay your bills in full when possible. Paying half now and half later, only pays half the bills instead of all of them.

Stratford from 3 As one of 15 facilities in the All American Waste/Murphy Road Recycling organization, the Stratford Baling operation has become a “Crown Jewel” within their system. “We are the largest private collection company in Connecticut,” said Murray. “We are looking to work together with the communities that we serve. The Stratford Baling remodeling effort was no exception. We worked closely with our local officials.

They were very understanding of what we were looking to accomplish.

They worked with us every step of the way.”

Murray is excited about how well the improvements have gone. Action Carting streamlines billing to save money and time

by Mitch Rose, vice president of Marketing and Billing Strategy, Billtrust Action Carting Environmental Services, a leading solid waste and recycling collector in the metropolitan New York City area is a recent winner of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Global Green Award. Action Carting serves some of the city’s most recognizable facilities, including the Empire State Building, Yankee Stadium and the New York Mets’ Citi Field. The company works with hospitals, construction firms, restaurants and businesses of all types, and as a result, it processes approximately 13,000 invoices each month some for less than $100 for the smaller customers and some for more than $50,000 for the larger clients.

At one time, Action Carting processed invoices through an outside printing service. This service created and transmitted PDF files for the printer to print. Then they were stuffed and mailed. At times, the process included special handling instructions printed on stickers, as a way to inform processors, of exceptions to normal billing rules.

Action Carting’s Chief Financial Officer, Brian Giambagno, assessed that billing process, noting the inefficient way of handling this manual processes, the lost communication opportunities because of a lack of dynamic invoice messaging capabilities during this process, and he also discovered Action Carting’s lack of eBilling for the

customer base. More importantly, Action Carting was not using data contained in the invoices to manage their billing process more effectively.

Toward a more efficient billing process After his review, Giambagno decided to find a new solution - one that would cut costs and streamline core processes. Giambagno and his team explored several options, and ultimately decided to ask three companies for proposals on how to meet their billing goals.

Three companies, the incumbent company who was doing the billing, a second billing solutions provider and Billtrust, each submitted proposals.

After thorough consideration, Action Carting selected Billtrust, because Billtrust proposed a technology solution rather than solving the issue as a printing challenge.

Getting results with a total technology solution At the onset, Billtrust worked closely with Action Carting to identify their billing needs. They wanted to streamline core business functions and reduce costs. Billtrust also wanted to identify ways to use data contained in the invoices to improve overall business operations. Some of the ways included sustainability goals and customer communications.

“Customer satisfaction is our top objective,” says Giambagno.

“Billtrust helped us redesign our invoices and create a format that enables us to communicate with our customers more effectively. This was huge for us

since we often need to convey information like holiday pickup schedules. Now we can print it right on the invoice. That reduces phone inquiries.”

Because Action Carting emphasizes sustainability, and it is a top objective for many of their customers as well, they were able to develop a paperless billing process

that was easy for their customers to use. They realized that a paperless billing process not only reduces the cost and environmental impact of bill printing, it eliminates the logistics involved in bill delivery.

Their goal to convert their customers from paper to E-billing was 25 for the first year. Within six

months, 32 percent of Action Carting’s customers had converted to electronic billing. That cut the payment cycle by seven days. The reason they exceeded the initial goal was in part due to Billtrust conducting a proactive phone campaign.

Billtrust also created an online portal that Action Carting’s customers

can use to view and print their own bills. Now, instead of calling the Action Carting billing department to request a new bill when an invoice is misplaced, customers can access it online themselves.

the need to affix special handling stickers to bills manually. Today when Action Carting needs to provide exception handling rules, they go into the invoice automatically.

Savings and benefits that go beyond the bottom line Besides tangible cost savings such as elimination of postage fees and printing costs, the Billtrust solution delivered many “soft cost” savings as well. Giambagno reports that the billing department is more focused now that team members can devote their time to tasks other than answering phone calls and printing bills. Now, as the company grows and adds new customers, they can handle the increased workload without adding new staff.

Invoice messaging has also resulted in higher levels of customer satisfaction now that they are able to communicate in this new way. Customers know in advance, what to expect when holidays roll around. The company no longer has to handle calls at the level it once did.

Action Carting Marketing Analyst Jenna DiBella says that the invoice messaging capability has also bolstered the company’s social media outreach efforts: “We engage with customers on social media platforms like Twitter, which allows us to exchange important in-

formation and solicit feedback and ideas.

Through invoice messaging, we can remind our customers about these communication channels and drive additional traffic, allowing us to expand the two-way communication opportunities.”

“We started out with the equipment that the previous owner was using and it didn’t take long to realize that we needed to upgrade our plant if we were going to be successful,” said Jeff. “He was looking for one specific sized stone and we could see that there was a market for everything that was coming from the site. As time has passed, we’ve continued to upgrade.”

“We started with a Powerscreen Mark II Screen that Greg had been using on his farm and other personal projects. It wasn’t long before we went to Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc. and bought the Powerscreen Commander 1400 that we are using today,” he said.

“About six months later, we could see that we needed more screening capability so we got the Warrior 1800.

We were using a Greystone coarse material washer, but that model we had wasn’t big enough to do the job. So late last year, we added the KPI-JCI PHB 1800 Blade Mill and Triple Deck Screen system to clean the rock as it comes off the Warrior 1800.”

Meanwhile, Jeff said that in January of 2012, they decided to revamp the entire layout to make it more efficient and more productive. cating the load out hopper that sits atop a dumping ramp built into the hillside that leads into the clearing above the operation.

“My steel construction experience came in handy for a number of projects around here, that load out hopper being one of them,” he said. “Now we can unload the haul trucks directly. Before this hopper, we needed to handle the rock an additional time.

Now, the rock is dumped into the vibratory hopper and it moves directly into the screening system.”

The work done thus far, demonstrates Jeff’s ingenuity and experience in steel fabrication and equipment installation. He noted that one of his earliest projects was building a heavy duty steel bridge that traverses Dry Run Creek, leading back to the portion of the property where the mining of the rock actually takes place.

“We needed a bridge that would be able to hold the larger haul trucks that we were planning to use here,” he said. “So I built a 100 ton bridge that can handle the load. It has done the job and then some!”

The production process River rock and sand is dumped into the load out hopper, with the largest material passing over the grizzly and onto a conveyor sending it directly to a boulder stockpile. These eventually will be handwashed so that even rock of this size can be sold as a clean, washed material. Material that passes through the grizzly goes directly onto the Powerscreen Warrior 1800.

There, material is screened into three sizes with the largest, 6 to 14-inch rock going into a haul truck to be taken to a stockpile. The 2 to 7-inch medium sized material moves onto the Commander 1400 where it is screened and washed with the under 2-inch passing through a Telsmith classifier log washer before being stockpiled.

The 2 to 4-inch and the 4 to 7-inch are washed, then conveyed to their respective stockpiles as well.

The 1-3/4-inch material screened through the Warrior 1800 conveys up and through the KPI-JCI 24-foot x 16-foot Blade Mill, then passes over its Triple deck, twin-screw sand screen system, giving them four washed products: Sand, pea gravel, 1/2 to3/4-inch and 3/4 to 1-3/4-inch.

“When we are in full production, we have the capacity to run about 300 tons per hour,” said Jeff.

“Right now, we are running in the 200 to 220 ton per hour range.”

Jeff said that the operation currently employs seven to ten people depending on the season. As sales

increase, the workforce increases accordingly.

“Jack Davidson, our mine foreman and his son ‘Beau’ operates the equipment and handle the daily operations. My daughter Megan is here for the summer doing administrative work as she takes a break from her studies at college. I oversee the operations here and take one or two days away from the plant doing sales work.” Jeff commutes regularly between Mooresville, NC and Speedwell, VA, which allows him to oversee the operation and do sales work in their primary market as well.

“Greg likes to come in to spend a day when he can,” said Jeff. “He likes to operate the machinery. He’s an excellent equipment operator as well as being a champion race car driver. During the racing season, his schedule is usually very full. So, he doesn’t visit here as often as we would like.”

Casey For Adam Logan, then sales representative for Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc., the opportunity to work with NASCAR racecar driver Greg Biffle, and Greg’s brother Jeff, to help create a first class decorative stone mining and processing plant, was a challenging yet rewarding experience as a salesperson. That was in 2010 and 2011. Today, Adam serves as regional sales manager for Powerscreen Mid-Atlantic, Inc. and is pleased with the results.

“Greg owned a Powerscreen Mark II that he was using on some of his properties as he was doing some cleanup work,” said Adam.

“The deposit at Triple B Stone contains a 24-inch minus materi-

al, and the equipment that he had when he started the operation, was not sufficient to process that material. Greg wanted to do more than scalp off the larger material.”

Adam said that Greg was looking for something like the Warrior 1800 with an open throat design that could handle enough tonnage to keep up with the rest of his plant. He also wanted to be able to move the equipment around easily when he needed to modify his overall plant layout. The Warrior 1800 has been the perfect equipment for the job.

“The Commander 1400 rinser cleans the 5-inch and 2-inch rock giving him two clean products off that machine,” said Adam. The other material goes over to the

other side of the Warrior 1800 where it is cleaned and screened with the other washing and screening system. With the Powerscreen 1800 and 1400 units, Triple B Stone has an excellent primary and secondary screening system in their operation.

“We enjoy working with Triple B Stone,” he said. “Our new sales representative for that area, Justin Hawksworth, is eager to help them refine their operation and increase sales to landscapers throughout the area.”

Two giants of the demolition industry and the National Demolition Association have passed away Ron Dokell, a founder and charter member of the National Association of Demolition Contractors passed away over the weekend in Houston. Ron was one of the first contractors to realize that there was a need for an organization to represent demolition contractors in the United States and Canada. He worked diligently to develop an association to meet the needs of everyone involved in the demolition process. He was a member of the Association’s first executive committee and served as its third president. He was instrumental in developing the programs that allowed the organization to attract new members and to grow the necessary infrastructure to become an important part of the construction association movement in both countries. He also served on the NADC’s first safety committee and was deeply involved with the development of its Demolition Safety Program and Demolition Safety Manual.

Ron’s obituary with service details will appear shortly on the Houston Chronicle’s website at www.chron.com Ralph David Loewendick of S.G. Loewendick and Sons of Columbus passed away on Mon., Sept. 3. Ralph, like Mr. Dokell, was a charter member of the NADC and directly involved with the development of the Association from its earliest days when it had only 40 or 50 member firms. Ralph’s son, David served as the Association’s 18th president. He is survived by his wife, Crystal and children Terrie, Vickie, David, Joseph and Michael, 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

The handler’s durable track design consists of a heavy duty chain with triple grouser 23.6-inch shoes. The low maintenance design includes planetary gear drive with 10 track and three bearing top rollers. Offering a wide 14.0-foot track stance for stable operation, the new RHL350 E delivers impressive lift capacities across its entire 52.5-foot reach. Tracks can be retracted to a width of 11.75-foot for transport. A well balanced machine design spreads handler weight over the track’s entire 13.8foot length for a low 55.8 psi ground contact pressure.

Running cleaner and more efficiently, the new RHL350 E uses a cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system to meet Tier 4i (Stage III B) emissions standards. The handler boasts a 214 hp engine, offering 8 percent more power output than the RHL350 D. At the same time, specific fuel consumption is reduced by 11 percent. Regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) occurs automatically, without impacting machine performance, and the regeneration process can be temporarily interrupted by pressing an indicator button located on the control panel. Engine start/stop is now push button controlled to properly manage engine shutdown while under critical load condi-

A new high performance main hydraulic pump increases pump capacity by 3 percent. Combined with improved engine performance, the increased oil flow provides greater handling efficiency of the RHL350 E. Both the engine and hydraulic system incorporate larger cooling systems protected by vented panels that provide increased airflow.

The engine’s new hydraulically powered fan is designed to automatically adjust airflow based on operating conditions to provide an optimal level of cooling.

Hydraulically height adjustable, the handler’s cab offers a maximum eye level elevation of up to 18.4-foot above ground level, improving performance during loading/unloading procedures.

Its cushioned cab elevation system provides absorption of shocks and jolts for operator comfort.

At 23 percent larger than previous designs, the new Wide Video Graphics Array (WVGA) display includes a higher resolution and higher contrast screen with an antiglare shield and scratch resistant coating. Intuitive controls make for a short learning curve of RHL350 E operation, and the ergonomic multifunction button delivers effortless fingertip navigation through the display.

System status and control of the standard 20 kW onboard generator and magnet are now incorporated into the cab display for improved efficiency. The RHL350 E offers four operating modes for the magnet attachment — small, medium and large parts handling and a jogging mode for sorting.

The new RHL350 E design includes expanded diagnostic capabilities, so service technicians can identify and address underlying issues. The large coolers for the engine and hydraulic system are lockable and readily accessible. A convenient stow away ladder offers access to the machine’s centrally located service platform for filter and central lubrication system maintenance. The handler’s fuel prefilter is now mounted on top of the fuel tank for easier servicing.

The new RHL350 E features a standard rearview camera system. Color video of the area behind the machine is visible on the WVGA display, providing an expanded view of the work area around the machine. The handler’s contoured counterweight is designed

At that time, using the older methods, it took about 1-1/2 years to produce compost. “We used it for our own projects and only screened with a Reed Screenall,” she recalled. “A few years back, I rented a trommel from another community. We screened the compost, and sold it.”

With the new recycling contract, it was clear that Newton was going to produce more compost. That is when they decided to buy an ALLU screening bucket.

They used that one for about one year. Then, they purchased a second loader along with a second ALLU screening bucket. When the trommel screening contract came up for renewal, the Board of Aldermen decided that renting a trommel was not cost-effective so they agreed to buy a trommel for Gentile’s department. “I take in about 25,000-cubic-yards of material annually,” she said.

“The material is fully composted in less than one year and we would like to get that down to 5-6 months,” Gentile said. “When we get the yard waste, it is ALLUed (great verb!) and placed in stockpiles.

These stockpiles are then turned by a loader into windrows (approx 15-foot high and 10-foot wide and, depending on space, 75-100-foot long).

ly basis and they maintain logs as part of the process.

The material is turned according to temperature and moisture content at the appropriate times, which also works well to kill weed seed. “We may ALLU several times,” Gentile said. “When the material is finished composting, it is screened to 3/4-inches and placed onto 50-cubic-yard trucks.”

“We have a contract with a man who has been in the business for more than 25 years,” she said. “He takes the temps, decides when to turn, when to stockpile, when to cure, and when to screen. He also does growing and soils testing on the product.”

Gentile said that her department gives screened compost to residents free and sells to soils manufacturers, organic nurseries, rooftop gardens and others. “It is tax subsidized, so we do make some revenue,” she added.

Large quantities of Newton’s recycled product are sold through a broker. “The material is picked up as we do not deliver,” notes Gentile. She also says that two ALLUs are enough for right now and there is no way to know what they might need in the future.

Newton considers itself, a “Green Community,” which has won numerous awards for its recycling program. They are usually on the cutting edge of things. For example, Newton is the first large community in MA to go to automated collection and SSR (Single Stream Recycling). They are also the first to have a waste oil collection program, and the first to have a permanent facility that is opened more than 21 days a year. Currently, they are investigating anaerobic digestion as a part of their waste recycling efforts, because it is “the right thing to do.” “Newton has not landfilled any MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) in more than 25 years,” she said.

A proprietary rotor design is comprised of cutter bits attached to a helical array of staggered holders called “interconnected parallelograms,” that continuously cut and crush oversize mate-

An independently powered, variable speed pinch roller is offered for horizontal feeding of material. Discharge is via gravity, pneumatic transition or independently powered belt or screw conveyor.

Applications include a diversity of chemical, mineral, foundry and plastics materials.

Also offered are SCC10, -30, -48, -60 and -72 models with 10.5-inch diameter rotors and throat widths of 10, 30, 48, 60 and 72-inches respectively. High speed, belt driven Screen Classifying Cutters are offered for high shear cutting of foods, chemicals, minerals, plastics/regrind, foundry

materials, wood chips and fiberglass insulation.

All are offered in carbon steel, abrasion resistant steel and stainless steel finished to industrial or sanitary standards.

Other size reduction equipment manufactured by the company includes Pin Mills, Rotary Lump Breakers, Attrition Mills, Hammer Mills and Shredders.
