Nonetheless, that did not stop the town from attempting to put the brakes on the entire operation. In early 2004, the town asserted that Glacial was subject to the current ordinance, which prohibited any new mining. Following their decision, Glacial was not to complete the bank financing it had been seeking. Accordingly, in August 2004, Glacial responded with a lawsuit and by September, the town thought it best to settle out of court. They agreed to allow Glacial to commence mining operations. However, that decision did not last long. Approximately three weeks later, they rescinded their previous resolution and Glacial was back in court fighting to stay afloat. It was a legal battle that lasted from 2005 to 2010. It required several appeals and considerable financial expense. Ultimately, the New York State Court of Appeals ruled in Glacial’s favor and the quarry startup began. Glacial from Start Up With the assurance that it was time to continue building the new operation, Clarey turned to Emerald Equipment Systems of Liverpool, NY, supplier and designer of Glacial’s modular wash plant. Clarey met with Jason McKinney and Mike Turney, sales representatives for Emerald. McKinney and Turney had first made contact with Glacial for their screening needs back in 1997. Even though it had been 15 years since that first encounter, Jason and Mike had remained patient and understanding, maintaining a relationship with Glacial during those turbulent times. The Plant Design When raw material is mined, it is loaded directly into a 15-cubic-yard feed hopper using a CAT 980 wheel loader. From the hopper, material moves to the primary screen tower one of two in the wash plant. Each screen tower is outfitted with a Simplicity 6-foot x 20foot triple deck "M” Series incline wet screen. Both screening units are installed with an extra wide four sided walkway for added worker safety. The Simplicity screens feature rollaway chutes and a spray bar system with individual gate valves. As an added component to the sand side of the operation, a classifying tank and two sand screws, finish the washing process for sand as the material comes off the secondary screening system. Currently, Glacial Materials produces and stocks washed round gravel and concrete sand. Washed round gravel sizes include 1As, 1s, 2s, 3s and oversize (3-8-inch). Mixed 1s and 2s and sidewalk mixes are also available. CFA presents 2012 Contractor of the Year Award MT. VERNON, IOWA — The Concrete Foundation Association (CFA) — an organization dedicated to improving the quality and acceptance of cast in place concrete foundations — announces the presentation of its 2012 Contractor of the Year Award to Lance Jordan. Jordan, chairman of Stephens & Smith Construction Co., Inc. of Omaha and Lincoln, NE, has been a member of CFA for over a decade. Jordan served as a Board member for a three year term ending last year. He was nominated for this prestigious award for his leadership in a CFA position on OSHA’s residential fall protection regulation that became effective earlier this year. “I am very humbled to be recognized by our “peer companies” who are members of the CFA,” states Jordan. “For well over thirty years we have admired many of the CFA companies and their owner/managers. In fact we have tried to duplicate many of their processes and systems, which we felt fit our own ‘business model.’ The CFA and its members definitely have set the standards of quality, excellence and professionalism for the cast in place foundation industry.” The annual award recognizes the contributions of a poured wall contractor to the industry. This year’s award was presented at the CFA Summer Convention held on Jul. 2629th in Acme, MI, at the Grand Traverse Resort. According to Jim Baty, technical director of the CFA, Jordan’s dedication to the Association and commitment to a leadership position within their region inspired a major effort undertaken this year to educate and assist contractors to be prepared

as conscientious employers. “Lance exemplified what we see in the legacy of many great CFA leaders,” states Baty. “When faced with the challenge of a significant business risk that would completely change their proven safe working culture, Lance and his company formed an alliance first within their region and then opened up their effort to national attention. He quietly but quickly assumed a leadership role that led our industry into communications with key OSHA officials both regionally and nationally to fully understand the implications of their latest directives to an industry where little, if any, technical advances were being made.” The focus was on the Occupational Safety & Health Association’s (OSHA) reversal of a decade-old position exempting residential foundation construction from requiring active fall protection systems. The exemption from 2001, had allowed foundation companies along with other residential constructions, to continue protecting their workforce through education. The reversal was founded on evidence that work related injuries and deaths were not being reduced and were even on the rise. The exception to this trend was the residential concrete foundation industry where a perfect safety record for the past three years had been logged and only one fatality in the past five years. In addition, Lance and many others in the industry felt that the technology presently available to companies placed workers at greater risk or hazard for both falls and physical stress, thus potentially increasing the

problem rather than reducing it. “Based upon elevated death rates for residential construction and the continued technological advances that have occurred in the construction safety industry over the past ten years, it is easy to understand why OSHA felt the need to remove the blanket exemption for fall protection, as it relates to residential construction,” states Mary Wilson, President of Michel Concrete Company from Springfield, Ill. a member of the CFA Board and lecturer on the topic of fall protection systems for residential concrete. “However, because there have been no technological advances regarding safety equipment for concrete foundation construction, since the initial OSHA exemption, and because contractors have been very successful protecting their workforce through implementation of OSHA supported alternative fall protection measures, the rational for

SANY opens world’s largest excavator factory PEACHTREE CITY, GA — SANY has opened the world’s largest and most advanced excavator factory near Shanghai, China, that can produce an excavator every five minutes. The Lingang Industrial Park has 10.7-million-square-feet of total space, with 5.9-millionsquare-feet of manufacturing space. The facility cost $818.5 million to build. The factory uses a computerized production management system for maximum efficiency, managing the entire process, from raw steel plate to structural welding, to components and final assembly. Excavator structures and components are transported automatically from underground tunnels to optimize production. The factory will primarily produce excavators in the 20 to 30 ton size range. The facility is unique for its 43,000-squarefeet of gardens, reflection pools, bamboo stands and marble patios that flank the assembly lines inside the facility. The gardens include palm trees, flowers, grass and fountains. “Our Lingang facility is the most advanced, highest capacity exca-

OGDEN, UT — The National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA) honored Jack B. Dexter Sand & Gravel takes delivery of new DSC dredge RESERVE, LA — Recently, Dexter Sand & Gravel of Missouri took delivery of their new 10-inch Wolverine dredge. The company purchased the hydraulic dredge to reach sand deposits below the ground water level. Dexter Sand & Gravel, a subsidiary of Delta Companies, Inc., purchased the dredge for use at a new 100 acre sand and gravel mine. The dredge will supply a slurry feed to the sand plant for production of concrete and mortar sand, as well as gravel prod-

ucts. Eventually, the mining area is expected to grow to a size of approximately 85 acres and the dredge will operate for about 6 to 8 months out of the year. “We have been very pleased with the features and performance of the Wolverine dredge. DSC and W&S knowledge and expertise has been very helpful to the successful startup of our new dredging operation,” stated Mike Martin, Delta Companies’ Aggregates area manager.

The dredge is known for its highly portable economical design.

Powerscreen launches Warrior 1400x D U N G A N N O N , NORTHERN IRELAND, 2012 — Powerscreen, one of the world’s leading providers of mobile crushing and screening equipment, launches the new Warrior 1400X screen. Damian Power, Powerscreen Global Product Director said: “The new Powerscreen® Warrior 1400X offers improved performance, lower operating costs, and easier serviceability while building on the reliable foundation of our classleading Warrior 1400 scalper.” The 1400X has been designed with economy in mind, with reduced engine running speed and enhanced hydraulics, the 1400X offers a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 15 percent in comparison to its predecessor. This can translate into a substantial financial saving for customers over the life-

time of the machine. Improved versatility and design specifications are other key achievements of the Warrior 1400X, with the screening angle range widening of 13-19 degrees. Standard stockpiling capacity on all conveyors has increased by up to 25 percent. With the chassis riser option and the telescopic side conveyor option, the fines and midgrade stockpiling capacity is increased to more than double that of a standard Warrior 1400. Time required for setup and shutdown is faster than the previous model, which will be of particular benefit to contractors. Serviceability features include a class leading screen box raise function and the unique ability to raise the collection conveyor. Optimal chute design in conjunction with the new feeder under-tray slide-out feature will minimise any

potential spillage and reduce any harmful material build-up around the machine. The Warrior 1400X now boasts improved mobility with a two speed tracking system as standard. The high speed mode is further enhanced with automatic engine speed ramp-up making the 1400X the fastest tracked machine in its range. The Warrior 1400X can be fitted with either a Tier 3 / Stage 3A Caterpillar C4.4 ATAAC - 4 cylinder diesel engine developing 90kW (120hp) at 1800 rpm, or a Tier 4i / Stage 3B Caterpillar C4.4 - 4 cylinder diesel engine developing 82kW (110hp) at 1800 rpm. Success factors for sustainable change “Some People Say”…Culture’s Link to Optimization and Profit It’s easy to speak and write about equipment performance. Throughput, delays and productivity are linked directly to profits, and their links to cost becomes easy to make when we talk about reducing variable costs associated with production. The reader’s expectations for these topics are clear and quantifiable: investment, time, throughput, capacity… how much, how long, etc. What if the topic involves culture? When hearts and mindsets are involved, it’s a different story. Expectations are often fuzzy but the needs are great. Miners have many skills when it comes to increasing productivity, but culture is our greatest challenge. Linking culture to production, cost and profits can be a challenge. When we can’t easily make that link, we may assume that the link has a minimal impact on performance. I believe that we fail to recognize the financial contribution that culture makes to profit because the connecting point involves the hidden potential to improve (i.e., what’s left to get). By this I mean the excess costs that can be reduced but haven’t been reduced, as well as existing capacity that could be used to produce more

tons but remains hidden. Hidden potential is a funny thing… hidden equipment capacity is not recorded anywhere on the general ledger. In fact, to quantify hidden capacity, we must go out of our way to calculate it. Excess costs are recorded on the ledger but are not categorized in a way that makes them easy to spot. As a result, these two categories of hidden potential are not an area of focus and are easily glossed over, even in process improvement work. SOME PEOPLE SAY that ALL opportunities to reduce costs, increase production and optimize performance can be addressed via process changes at the mine/plant level using Six Sigma, Lean, TQM, etc. There is no doubt that millions of dollars of improvements CAN be captured with process changes, but if process changes are all that’s required, why isn’t every mining operation that has implemented an improvement initiative already optimized? Improvement potential can be hidden by what people believe about change, especially by management’s beliefs about change - their role in change, what they accept as “normal”, and their role in removing the barriers that hold them back. Fur-

ther, management beliefs directly affect their behaviors (words and actions) within the team and with the workforce. These behaviors either build trust or tear it down. • With trust, a “proactive” culture forms that is focused on potential (i.e., what is possible to achieve). When a team is focused on potential, they can talk about ANYTHING that stands in their way, including issues considered politically incorrect or “sacred cows”. • Without trust, a “reactive” culture forms that waits to be told what to do, refuses to believe that things could be different and does not consider management’s beliefs or behaviors as barriers to potential or culture change, including communications, follow-through and taking responsibility. SOME PEOPLE SAY that the management system (management processes, beliefs and behaviors) are outside the scope of improvement work - that management already has what they need to make good decisions and that their method of “operating” their management system has worked for years - why change it

now? I have several questions in response to this viewpoint: • How much better do you want to be? • Is it possible that you are leaving significant earnings on the table that hinge on your current mindset and don’t know it? • What if you focused on creating a culture tied to potential instead of just meeting budget every week, month or year? • What would happen if all of your people adopted new mindsets - from “Can we meet budget?” to “How good can we be?” • Do you believe that your property has achieved true optimization? • What if your management team’s mindset is your biggest barrier to change? • What would your shareholders expect you to do to optimize performance? THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH: SOME PEOPLE SAY that “people should just do what they are told to do and we will make money”. How much MORE MONEY could you make with a different management

An operator can access more detailed information through a secondary menu within the setup, diagnostics and alarm settings menu, which can help an operator or service technician identify and resolve faults. Within the screening range, the new colour HMI display provides improved diagnostic capabilities, such as fault log history, electronic engine information and fault code support, while retaining the industry-standard fault icons for shutdown and derate warnings. A small PLC (Programmable Logic Control) inside the display panel houses the main operational software. The aligned rollout of these systems with Tier 4i/Stage IIIB-compliant Powerscreen machines mean that the 1000 Maxtrak, 1000SR and 1300 Maxtrak cone crushers, as well as some Warrior and H-

decided to revamp the entire layout to make it more efficient and more productive. So, he began by fabricating the load out hopper that sits atop a dumping ramp built into the hillside that leads into the clearing above the operation. “My steel construction experience came in handy for a number of projects around here, that load out hopper being one of them,” he said. “Now we can unload the haul trucks directly. Before this hopper, we needed to handle the rock an additional time. Now, the rock is dumped into the vibratory hopper and it moves directly into the screening system.” The work done thus far, demonstrates Jeff’s ingenuity and experience in steel fabrication and equipment installation. He noted that one of his earliest projects was building a heavy duty steel bridge that traverses Dry Run Creek, leading back to the portion of the property where the mining of the rock actually takes place. “We needed a bridge that would be able to hold the larger haul trucks that we were planning to use here,” he said. “So I built a 100 ton bridge that can handle the load. It has done the job and then some!” The production process River rock and sand is dumped into the load out hopper, with the largest material passing over the grizzly and onto a conveyor sending it directly to a boulder stockpile. These eventually will be hand washed so that even rock of this size can be sold as a clean, washed material. Material that passes through the grizzly goes directly onto the Powerscreen Warrior 1800. There, material is screened into three sizes with the largest, 6 to 14-inches rock going into a haul truck to be taken to a stockpile. The 2 to 7-inch medium sized material moves onto the Commander 1400 where it is screened and washed with the under 2-inches passing through a Telsmith classifier log washer before being stockpiled. The 2 to 4-inch and the 4 to 7-inch are washed, then conveyed to their respective stockpiles as well. The 1-3/4-inch material screened through the Warrior 1800 conveys up and through the KCI-JCI 24-foot x 16-foot Blade Mill, then passes over its Triple deck, triple screw sand screen system, giving them four washed products: Sand, pea gravel, ½ to ¾-inch and ¾ to 1-3/4-inch. “When we are in full production, we have the capacity to run about 300 tons per hour,” said Jeff. “Right now, we are running in the 200 to 220 ton per hour range.” Jeff said that the operation currently employs seven to ten people depending on the season. As sales in-

crease, the workforce will increase accordingly. “Jack Davidson, our mine foreman and his son ‘Beau’ operates the equipment and handle the daily operations. My daughter Megan is here for the summer doing administrative work as she takes a break from her studies at college. The other material goes over to the other side of the Warrior 1800

Awards. The awards recognize companies that set an outstanding example of environmentally sound management within the ready mixed concrete industry. “We are extremely proud that these facilities have received this distinction,” said Filiberto Ruiz, deputy chief executive officer of Ag-

and Des Plaines - Category D. The AIUS facilities were two of 13 facilities to receive awards from a pool of more than 6,000 applicants. The award was presented during NRMCA’s ConcreteWorks Conference and Board of Directors meeting on Monday, Sept. 17.

Rockmore has targeted improvements in bit design such that the rock cuttings flush more effectively from the bit face, leading to better penetration rates and increased bit life. The CrossFlow design is intended to provide more efficient rock cutting flushing in order to improve penetration rates and extend bit life. Design Features: The CrossFlow bit incorporates new design features in the bit face, particularly in the geometry and placement of flush holes, flush grooves, and tungsten buttons. The intent of the new bit geometry is to remove the broken rock chips, which result from the percussive blows, away from the bit face and up towards the hole annulus as quickly and effectively as possible. placed strictly near the center line of the bit in order to help the flushing medium, usually compressed air for quarry drilling, to more effectively push the rock cuttings away from the bit center towards the bit edge. This direct air path from the bit center to edge provides improved flushing characteristics compared to conventional flush hole positions that are farther from the bit centerline. Standard flush hole positions do not provide adequate flushing medium at the center of the bit, creating a dead zone of rock chips. Such rock chips remain at the center of the bit and prohibit good advancement during the percussion blow cycle, leading to slower penetration rates. The flush holes are located within newly designed flushing grooves that promote maximum flow of rock cuttings away from the

bit face. These V shaped flush grooves are much wider at the bit edge than conventional designs and greatly enhance the ability of the flushing medium to carry the larger rock chips away from the bit face and up towards the hole annulus. In addition, the rock chip velocity is reduced at the wider section of the flush groove at the bit edge, leading to a reduction of steel erosion on the body of the bit. Lowering the erosion factor on the matrix of the bit, known as “body wash,” will extend overall bit life greatly. The tungsten buttons are placed strategically around and between the flushing holes and grooves such that the carbide buttons contact the rock most effectively with each percussive impact from the bit to the rock face. The ideal contact mechanism between each button and the rock

is deep penetration of the tungsten carbide into fresh unbroken rock at each percussion blow. The placement of carbide buttons on the CrossFlow bit design maximizes the effectiveness of the carbides to penetrate and break the rock, resulting in improved penetration rates. Design Offering: Threaded button bits 89-127mm for TopHammer applications. DTH button bits with CrossFlow design currently in development. Design Benefits: Higher penetration rates, improved bit flushing characteristics, less bit erosion known at body wash, and extended bit life. By using the Rockmore CrossFlow bit design, drilling operators in quarries can reduce drilling consumable costs and increase their overall drilling efficiencies.

New AD60 adds capacity, enhanced cooling efficiency and increased operator comfort to the Cat® underground articulated truck range The new AD60, with a rated payload capacity of 66 tons, is now the largest model in the Cat® range of underground articulated trucks, providing a 9 percent capacity increase over the proven AD55B. The new truck incorporates advanced heat-shielding and cooling technology, significant refinement of its Cat C27 ACERT™ engine, enhanced ride characteristics, and now-standard monitoring systems, including the Cat VIMS™ Guardian and Truck Payload Management systems. Premium standard features include a choice of integrated body styles, electronic retarding, climate-controlled cab and ground level servicing. Engine and cooling The Cat C27 engine, rated at 776 to 805 gross horsepower, has been significantly refined for the AD60, including new pistons and high temperature fuel injectors, more durable rocker arm assemblies, a redesigned crankshaft lubrication system, a high efficiency engine oil cooler and a higher capacity fuel cooler. The sum of these refinements is added durability, reliability and cooling efficiency for the C27. New for the AD60 is a remote-mounted transmission oil cooler that ensures optimum operating temperature for the seven-speed Cat planetary powershift transmission, which features a lock-up

torque converter for efficient, fuel-saving operation, as well as an electronically controlled retarding system for optimum safety and productivity. The new cooler lessens the heat load on the engine oil cooler, allowing the engine cooler to function more efficiently. The new heat-shielding system isolates heat from the exhaust manifolds, turbocharger impeller, and exhaust piping to reduce engine compartment temperatures and to provide a cooler environment for surrounding components. In addition to being more effective, the heat shield is also easier to install and remove. New ventilated hoods and covers allow effective heat dissipation and assist in passive cooling of component compartments. Operator environment and suspension The spacious, comfortable, well protected operator station is now equipped with a standard air-ride seat, the Cat Comfort TLV2, which features electric adjustment of firmness and a design that minimizes vertical and lateral motion imparted to the operator. Updates to the front suspension system contribute to ride stability and operator comfort. Value-adding features Premium features in the AD60 design include electronic integration of

the engine and drive train, providing controlled-throttle shifting, overspeed protection, and body-up shift inhibitor. The now standard Truck Payload Management System calculates payload data, and the VIMS Guardian System provides operators, service technicians and managers with machine health information to ensure high mechanical availability. The choice of a dump or ejector body allows tailoring the AD60 to different applications, and the single-stage hoist cylinder speeds cycle times. The frame

design features box-section construction with materials and welding techniques that optimize structural life, and the articulation/oscillation hitch promotes stability and maneuverability in all types of ground conditions. Four-wheel, oil-cooled, multiple disc brakes provide reliable, non-fade stopping power, adding to the AD60 safety features, which include an integral ROPS/FOPS cab, ground-level shutdown switch, operator presence system, anti-skid deck surfaces, and push-out safety glass.
