Recycling “Mega-Mall” serves the tri-state area

From there, the material goes via two lines into the sorting station, a product of Frank’s design efforts coupled with the engineering and installation of the ERIN Recycling Equipment Company. A third, much smaller line, is devoted to isolating aggregate, which then is diverted to the aggregate production.

Workers have two bins in which to sort their material. Each has a bin for wood and a separate bin for materials like plastic, metal, glass, paper, cardboard and the like. The wood is directed into a CBI 5400 grinder that is powered by two, 300 hp electric motors that operate sequentially based on demand. The other recyclables drop into their respective collection bins.

“The grinder runs continuously on one motor; and if the demand loads it down too much, within a few milliseconds, the second motor comes on to help handle the load. When the need has passed, the second motor shuts down and the grinder returns to its regular mode. We produce a 6-inch shredded product that goes to mulch companies or to biofuel producers.”

“We are permitted for 10,000 tons per day of secondary materials, and we are looking to increase that over time,” said Frank. “Our concrete and asphalt material comes in and is stockpiled here and on the far side of the property. We crush at two locations, depending on our demand for finished product.

Our primary system is an Eagle Crusher Jumbo 1400 with a built-in 6-foot x 16-foot, three deck screen. We make three products here. We make a 2 1/2-inch stone for general use, and we produce a base material that meets NJDOT spec as well. We also have a clean 3/4-inch stone that is used like a 57. Our second crusher is an Extec impactor that we use when we need extra crushing capabilities. Since it is portable, we can take it to other jobsites when the occasion calls for it.”

Frank said that currently, 75-80 percent of what comes into the facility does not end up in a landfill.

Materials like cardboard, aluminum and steel are sold as commodities. Miscellaneous recyclables such as refrigerators, computers and even mattresses are recycled according to the latest regulations. Third party companies provide the appropriate documentation and certifications that are needed for these products, such as the removal of Freon from the refrigerant equipment.

RACINE, WI — New Holland Construction announced that in North America it will refocus on its strengths: the compact product lines for the landscaping, utility, resi-

dential construction and agriculture industries, among others.

As a result, starting in 2012 New Holland Construction will begin withdrawing from the North

American market its crawler dozers, motor graders, more than 80 horsepower wheel loaders, six ton plus excavators and telescopic handlers. New Holland Con-

The Senate voted 92-6 to send President Barack Obama a measure extending authorization at current funding levels for federal highway and transit programs until March 31 and for federal aviation programs until Jan. 31. Action came one day before aviation pro-

grams and revenue collection authority were scheduled to lapse and 15 days before surface transportation programs and revenue collection authority were scheduled to expire.

Representatives passed the bill by voice vote Tuesday after a short debate

in which no member spoke against it.

The Senate reached a unanimous consent agreement Thursday afternoon to call up the bill, debate two amendments for 10 minutes, and then vote on the amendments and final passage. Both amendments failed.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials issued a statement commending Congress for approving the bill (HR 2887) to extend both the nation’s surface transportation and aviation programs.

Congress approves six month Surface, four month Aviation extensions at current funding

Congress from 9 “The six month extension of federal highway and transit programs approved

by Congress today ensures the continuation of thousands of job creating infrastructure projects in every state,” said AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley. “We congratulate the House and Senate leadership on both sides of the aisle for their tireless hard work to bring about this positive result. We encourage the president to quickly sign the legislation.

AASHTO is prepared to work with Congress and the administration over the next six months to pass a robust, multiyear surface transportation reauthorization bill.”

When signed into law by the president, this would be the eighth short term extension of the 2005 surface transportation authorization law known as “SAFETEA-LU,” which originally expired Sept. 30, 2009. And it would be the 22nd extension of FAA’s authorization, which expired Sept.

30, 2007.

Congress has not acted on a new six year highway and transit package during the past two years because of differences on funding levels and how to pay for a comprehensive investment program. Likewise, Congress has been unable to agree to a multiyear FAA reauthorization due to policy disputes.

As a supplement to maintaining existing current funding levels, Obama sent to Congress on Monday a bill, the American Jobs Act, to pump $50 billion into transportation projects next fiscal year and allocate $10 billion to establish a national infrastructure bank.

Two amendments to cut spending voted down Senators went on the record supporting maintaining existing transportation funding levels, voting overwhelmingly to reject two amendments that would have trimmed spending.

Both amendments were offered by Sen. Rand Paul, R-KY. The first amendment would have allowed the Highway

Trust Fund to spend no more than it collected next fiscal year in gaso-

line, diesel fuel and other user fees. Paul said this would cut an estimated

$9 billion from highway and transit programs in Fiscal Year 2012. The

amendment failed 84-14.

Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chairwoman Barbara Boxer, D-CA, issued a statement after Thursday’s votes.

“Today was a crucial moment for the 1.8 million workers and the thousands of businesses who depend on a strong transportation bill,” Boxer said. “There were needless delays, but in the end the Senate showed it was willing to do the right thing. By turning back an amendment that was intended to cut surface transportation by one third, it puts us in a good position as we move forward on our two year (reauthorization) bill.”

Boxer spoke on the Senate floor earlier Thursday regarding objections to the extension that had been raised by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-OK. Coburn held up consideration of the transportation extensions Wednesday and most of Thursday while arguing the requirement that states spend a certain percentage of their highway funds for “enhancement projects” such as bicycle and pedestrian paths should be eliminated. “It is a positive step for the country that the Congress has passed this historic combination of extensions, which is important for job creation and our nation’s infrastructure,” Mica said.

“With the FAA bill delayed four years and a two year delay on the highway measure, Congress must now act responsibly to enact long-term reauthorizations that will put Americans back to work and build our nation’s infrastructure. I challenge House and Senate leaders to continue to work toward long overdue solutions that address our transportation needs.”

Recycling keeps “The Miracle” alive!

by Peter Hildebrandt Editor’s Note: The recycling of materials takes many forms in today’s Waste Handling Industry. This is a recycling story unlike any in recent memory.

As we take time in September to remember our workforce on Labor Day, and to honor those on September 11, who perished in the attacks on our nation on the tenth anniversary of that terrible day, the story that follows is our tribute to the people and events that remind us of the values that we cherish.

With acts of kindness, generosity and patriotism like those of Capt. C.B. “Sully” Sullenberger, and the people who helped create the “Miracle on the Hudson” exhibit at the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte, NC, we wish to thank everyone who helps to make this nation great.

Flight 1549 Ben Bostic was in New York City to work on the acquisition of a dot com start-up. He flew in on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 and was scheduled to return on U.S. Air’s Thursday 2:45 p.m. flight on Jan 15. His boarding gate changed on him shortly before boarding delaying the fliers. Flight 1549 didn’t take off until after 3:20 p.m. That wasn’t the only change in scheduling that Bostic and his fellow passengers experienced that day. They never dreamed that the way that the aircraft they had boarded

would only make it to Charlotte after two years and atop a flatbed trailer, but that’s what has happened.

“I heard the geese hit, it was only a few minutes into the flight as I think we were at approximately 3,200-feet — although I had no idea what the sound was at the time,” says Bostic. “I was in seat 20A so I had a clear view of the rear of the left engine, which was engulfed in flames after the bird strike.”

After what seemed like hours of staring at the burning engine, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger came across the intercom and said in a calm, but commanding voice, “This is your Captain speaking: Brace for Impact.”

“I didn’t realize until a little later that we were indeed going into the Hudson River. Nevertheless, once the pilot made the announcement, after a few seconds of disbelief, I actually lost all fear. I became very calm again because I knew it was out of my hands. The only thing I could do was follow the flight attendants’ instructions to assume the brace position. So that is what I did.”

The landing was more violent than any landing Bostic could imagine.

Perhaps that was because he only had 90 seconds to prepare himself; he initially envisioned it would not be much more than a rear end car crash.

It was much more.

Once the plane came to a stop, Bostic

followed a line of passengers climbing atop what were now the submerged seatbacks, and up the left side of the plane. In the commotion, Bostic realized that he had forgotten his seat cushion

so he grabbed one from one of the rows closer to the front of the plane as he exited. Once he was in a rescue raft, he

was given a life preserver from someone aboard the NY Waterway rescue ferry.

Bostic is very grateful for the airplane. “Along with the crew, rescuers and all my fellow passengers, the plane did the job she needed to do to ensure our survival. The combination of great engineering along with extraordinary piloting skills, ensured the plane didn’t break apart and was able to stay afloat long enough for all 155 to evacuate and be rescued. If the damage to the plane would have been only slightly more severe, water would have come in more quickly and I am confident the outcome wouldn’t have been as successful. I was excited to learn that it is being preserved as a historical artifact that will be used as an educational and inspirational tool for others.”

The idea is born Early on, there were people at Charlotte’s Carolinas Aviation Museum who had the idea of attempting to bring at least one piece of the plane to Charlotte, as a part of an exhibit at their facility.

tors, morphed the idea into one of obtaining the entire aircraft.

“Everyone just thought that was a crazy idea,” explains Dorsch. “But I had actually been on the next scheduled flight to Charlotte on the day that Flight 1549 went down.

My mother called me crying with the news while I was taxiing down the runway at LaGuardia.

Being an airplane geek as I am, I always take a window seat and just after our flight took off, I saw the other plane down in the water.”

After the incident, Dorsch was traveling abroad, and he visited an exhibit in the Tokyo International Airport that memorialized the 545 people who died in a Japan Airlines plane crash. He was particularly impressed with a huge flow chart at the exhibit that emphasized the safety changes that had taken place over time. The chart linked the tragic loss of life on the Japan Airlines flight directly to the safe recovery of the passengers on Flight 1549 by showing the safety changes that have taken place over the years. These changes have led to greater survival success rates in more recent crashes.

“For example, through design changes with luggage racks, the luggage didn’t fall on everybody upon impact,” says Dorsch. “This got me thinking about 1549.

From there, I got a giant 18 month process going, involving insurance companies and U.S. Airways to try to have this sited in Charlotte.”

Dorsch recalled how they needed to work with the 40 insurance companies that insured the plane and how they got them to agree to this idea.

He said that they worked with Airbus and with US Airways to help reassemble the aircraft, and the two companies were extremely helpful during the overall project.

“Miracle Plane” takes journey into Aviation History A gigantic part of this

story is Joe Supor, of J. Supor & Sons, transporters of the recovered plane. As a specialty contractor, Supor has been involved in virtually every major large aircraft recovery in the New York Metropolitan Area for some 30-40 years. As a result, Joe Supor was hired by the insurance company to pull the airplane out of the water and to store it.

During that process, Supor contracted with Weeks Marine to lift the plane out of the water and onto their barge. Supor in turn took it apart from there, and placed it in storage.

“Large accident recovery is something he has specialized in,” says Dorsch. “But this was different because so much of the airplane was left intact and this was such a great story. When I started this project I didn’t even think about asking Joe Supor because it would be so expensive to relocate the plane; but with all the other people we went to with this job, in order to get the price low enough (to move it to Charlotte), they were going to have to cut the airplane in half. Cutting the airplane in half would have destroyed the historical integrity of the airplane.”

“I didn’t (contact) Joe Supor for a long time because I couldn’t imagine I could ever afford to have him do the job. He eventually started the dialogue with me saying he recognized the historical significance of everything and wanted to be part of history.

He finally brought it up and offered to donate everything into it. Every time we got a police escort, he was paying for that. When we got a bucket truck to lift up a telephone line, he paid for that — for 780 miles.”

Supor had to hire traffic engineers to do the planning of the transport of the plane. There were two times when they shut down an interstate highway so the plane could go in opposing lanes for several miles — driving parallel to the open lanes

President of Upstate Shredding and Ben Weitsman & Son provides funding to fire department Owego fire chief says donation of $25,000 is largest gift to construction project.

A $25,000 donation from Adam Weitsman, president of Upstate Shredding and Ben Weitsman & Son will help build the classroom portion of the Owego Volunteer Fire Department’s new training campus, where future firefighters will receive important education and safety training.

Village fire Chief Ed Franz said the donation is the largest the building project has received.

“This donation gives us the shot in the arm needed to complete the classrooms,” Franz said. “We’re grateful to Adam and to the Weitsman companies.”

The sizable gift will nearly cover the cost of the construction of the three room classroom facility. Two of the classrooms will be used for safety training, instruction and other “clean” training activities, Franz said, while the third room, a “dirty” classroom, will resemble a garage and will allow the more than 300 volunteer fire fighters in the Owego department a permanent, indoor location to train on fire engines and other essential public safety equipment.

Franz said he hopes construction will conclude this fall.

“The Fire Department is an important part of the community of Owego, and I’m glad to be able to support them,” said Adam Weitsman.

Owego Mayor Ed Arrington said he was deeply appreciative of the donation, and said the new training facility will benefit the residents not only of Owego but also of all of Tioga County, NY. When complete, Owego’s training center will be used for education and training by all the county volunteer fire departments.

“This new facility will be a real boost to the community. We’ll be able to train our future and current fire fighters here,” the mayor said. “The Weitsman family has always thought of the community first; on behalf of the people of Owego, I want to thank Adam Weitsman for his most generous gift.”

Exhibitors have gone to great lengths to ensure that the aircraft will look as it did when it landed in the Hudson River in January 2009. Dorsch points out that because this is a reasonably new airplane, it gives the Carolinas Aviation Museum a 35 year technological lead over any other aviation museum in the

world, especially in the field of commercial aviation. “No one else has an airplane this new in a museum anywhere,” adds Dorsch. “The Concordes were built in the 1960s and the 747s were built in the 1970s.

Dorsch points out that during the time the exhibit was being set up, the retiring NASA Space Shuttle crafts were heading to exhibits of their own, as that program ended. Nevertheless, despite the glamour of the Space Shuttles, peo-

ple are fascinated by this plane’s fate.

More importantly, they are excited about the new exhibit. Most likely, it is because an average person can identify with Ben Bostic who boarded a plane headed for home, expecting everything to go off without a hitch. Even concrete floors that are covered with things like linoleum or tile can be dyed and polished after removing the covering. The new floor will be easier to clean and more durable than the old covering.

Learning from 17 termines what can be used and what can’t. For example, you would not cover a garage floor with carpeting or hardwood flooring. But people have used paint or pigmented epoxy for years to brighten the room, stop the dusting and make the floor easier to clean and resist stains.

The problem with paint as a concrete covering is that it quickly peels off and requires yearly re-coating. Epoxy does better, but it is a topping that can still delaminate if moisture is coming up through the floor. It is much like plastic; it can scratch easily and/or melt away when it gets heated up.

This is where concrete polishing fits in. It gives all the benefits of good epoxy floor, but it does not have any of the problems associated with coatings.

Lighting engineers say that the high shine and reflectivity of a polished concrete floor can brighten a room by as much as 35 percent (considerably more than an epoxy floor). There is no coating that can fail and the floor still breathes. The densifier solution that is added during the polishing process chemically makes the concrete surface much stronger and more resistant to wear. It also locks in optional colored dyes that can be used to improve the

structures. It seems evident that many contractors are expanding their horizons in search of revenue. This training seminar will open that door for a certified CONTRx System contractor to generate new profits.

As the flood waters that raged through the village of Owego and other parts of Tioga County begin to recede, the residents of the upstate New York community are left to begin to reconstruct their homes and lives.

All parts of the community were impacted by the historic floods this week — “The town is closed,” said Fire Chief Jim Morris. Damage from the flood will linger for months, if not years, and will cost the community millions and millions of dollars to repair.

Power is out to much of the community. The two main bridges into the village were closed due to concerns over damage dealt during the flooding.

Half of the town’s residents were evacuated, and those that remained have crowded into three temporary shelters. Supplies are limited, and there are reports of neighborhoods banding together with the food they have remaining as supplies are flown in by the National Guard.

The area was inundated both by the Owego Creek and the Susquehanna River, which crested at 40-feet, 10feet above flood stage, according to the National Weather Service.

To help those affected by the flood, Adam Weitsman, president of Upstate Shredding — Ben Weitsman & Son, is making a donation of $100,000 to Tioga County charities and aid organizations working in Owego and Tioga County FEVAS. These organizations are providing much needed food and shelter to the thousands of people impacted by the floods.

previous year. Construction starts in the non-building sector fell from $1.7 billion in the first six months of 2010 to $1.0 billion during the same period this year — a decline of 38 percent. By further comparison, a total of $3.5 billion in infrastructure projects started in New York City during the first half of 2008, which was shortly after the start of the recession that began in late 2007.

The residential sector continued its losing streak. Construction starts in the residential sector dropped to $840 million in the first half of 2011, compared to $1.3 billion in the first half of 2010; $1.4 billion in the first six months of 2009 and $3.6 billion during the same period in 2008.

First half construction starts in the non-residential sector, which had been buoyed in 2010 by the start of the WTC Transit Hub, Barclays Arena and the renovation of Madison Square Garden, fell 40 percent — from $7.6 billion to $4.6 billion in 2011. The first half 2011 numbers, however, compare favorably to 2009 ($3.8 billion) and 2008 ($3.7 billion).

The $1.2 billion expansion of Terminal 4 at JFK Airport was the largest single construction start (by value) during the first half of 2011. The project alone accounted for more than one quarter of all non-residential building starts in New York City.

The second most valuable construction start was the MTA’s $200 million Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot in Central Harlem, followed by a $195 million Manhattan garage and distribution center for use by the New York City Department of Sanitation and UPS. The MTA’s 63rd Street subway station along the Second Avenue Subway, valued at $176 million, is next, followed by the first private sector project on the list — the

$175 million Jerome L. Greene Research Center at Columbia University.

“Construction activity in the first half of 2011 is extremely disappointing, especially when you consider the nearly $11 billion in construction starts for the same time last year,” said New York Building Congress President Richard T. Anderson. “The more than $20 billion in construction starts recorded for the year in 2010, amid signs of a slowly strengthening economy, offered hope that the building industry was turning the corner. said New York Building Congress President Richard T. Anderson. The initial data for 2011, however, tells a story of relative weakness in each sector.”

There are signs of improvement, beginning in the second half of 2011.

Building permits are up 12 percent this year, which offers hope for a modest rebound in residential construction. The Whitney Museum and Fordham University are moving ahead with major building projects, and Boston Properties has announced it will restart its $1 billion 55th Street tower project in the coming months. Both the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have unveiled proposals that would fully fund their multi-billion dollar capital plans.

Anderson added, “Considerable work is being generated by the major projects already under construction, including at the World Trade Center. And there is hope for the near future as a large number of projects are ready to go. The question, of course, is will the economy cooperate?”

Largest composite bridge in the world now open

CHICAGO, IL — The 32-foot wide, eight span, 540foot long Knickerbocker, the largest composite bridge in the world, is now open in Boothbay, ME Built in 1930 with a major superstructure rehabilitation in 1983, the existing Knickerbocker Bridge was comprised of a 38 span timber bridge approximately 535-feet in length. This two lane highway bridge, which carries Barters Island Road over the Back River in Boothbay, is very close to the tidal waters with only 4-feet of clearance at high tide.

Being in a harsh marine environment, it was key that the replacement bridge be constructed to better withstand the elements.

The solution came in the form of hybrid composite beams (HCB) manufactured by Harbor Technologies in Brunswick, ME. Developed by HC Bridge

Company, LLC, a firm specializing in the development of hybrid composite structural alternatives, the lightweight beams are made using fiber reinforced polymer. Used in conjunction with concrete and steel, the beams make a stronger, longer lasting bridge with an installed cost that is comparable to the traditional materials used to construct bridges.

According to John Hillman, HC Bridge Company president, the HCB combines the strength and stiffness of conventional concrete and steel with the lightweight and corrosion advantages of advanced composite materials. The result is a cost effective alternative for major infrastructure projects with sustainable structures that are lighterweight, safer and longer lasting than conventional bridges. The hybrid composite beams have also been used on bridges in

New Jersey and Illinois, as well as a Class 1 Railroad Bridge for BNSF Railway Company.

Hillman stated that Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) decided to move forward with use of the hybrid composite beams for this project after spending years watching the technology develop. He noted that, in an effort to improve the quality of new bridges in the state and to help foster economic development through growing Maine’s composite manufacturing base, a Composites Initiative was made part of a public law. With an effective start date of Sept. 1, 2008, this law served as a catalyst to advance the development of composite bridges and created the funding mechanism for the Knickerbocker Bridge. Roughly $11 million dollars for construction of bridge projects, which include composite components, was funded as part of the Initiative.

For this project, the preliminary design report recommended replacing the existing bridge with adjacent precast box beams. This recommendation was later changed to HCB after MaineDOT discovered, researched and tested the new HCB technology at the University of Maine. Since the existing bridge had a low load rating, it could not be used to transport or off load the heavier precast box beams, thus it would have necessitated a trestle or large barge and crane.

The construction documents were prepared by Calderwood Engineering of Richmond, Maine, with assistance on the HCB design from Teng & Associates, Inc. (an exp. firm based in Chicago, IL).

Eric T. Calderwood, P.E., chief engineer at Calderwood Engineering noted that corrosion and long term durability were key factors of design since this structure is over the salt water and there are times that the water is very close to the bottom of the beams. These factors made HCB attractive as a design solution.

“We have a good history of the use of composites in a marine environment here in Maine as there are boat yards all along the coast today that use composites so it is a material that we have confidence in for this kind of exposure condition,” he said. “Further, HCB was attractive because the weight of the beams during erection would give them a considerable advantage over precast.”

Knickerbocker from 30 In order to comply with the hydraulic criteria for the new bridge, the HCBs were designed to match the recommended 33-inch depth box beams in order to maintain the required vertical underclearance.

Further, similar to the proposed precast box beam bridge, the HCB framing system was limited to two 60-foot end spans and six 70-foot interior spans resulting in an eight span bridge with a total length of 540-feet. The beams were also made continuous for live load with negative moment reinforcing steel cast over the piers in the 7-inch concrete topping slab.

According to Calderwood, the design was impacted at the substructure units because the dead load was significantly less than the original precast design, however, the engineering team had to design for significant wave action.

“One of my considerations when using something new is how it will function,” said Calderwood. “In this case, we had a full size beam made up at the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center (AEWC) with arch filled and deck cast on it as it would be in the field. This beam was then fully instrumented and tested for fatigue considerations, and then once fatigue was fully satisfied it was tested to destruction. The beam had approximately four times the capacity required.”

However, most important, Calderwood noted that from a structural engineering standpoint, HCB offers an enhanced safety benefit because flexural components need to fail in a ductile manner to ensure that distortions are visible and allow for repair and or closure/evacuation prior to ultimate failure.

“Protection against a sudden non-ductile failure is inherent in the use of the HCB technology because the design of the beams is actually governed by deflection,” said Calderwood. “Any decomposition or structural loss of capacity should be readily visible by any maintenance crews and or the general public.”

Construction began in the spring of 2010 with the installation of seven pile bents comprised of concretefilled pipe piles with rock anchors tensioned into bedrock. Each bent was constructed with only one row of piles to allow for deflection under temperature loads. Only one bent was constructed with two rows of piles to provide longitudinal fixity. The only expansion joints are located at the abutments. In the fall of 2010, prior to completing the substructure construction, the general contractor, Wyman & Simpson, began erection of the HCB units. Using HCB, the contractor was able to drive the trucks with the beams on the existing bridge and off-load them using the same barge and crane needed for the substructure. With the HCB, the contractor was able to ship the beams across the existing timber bridge even with the posted load restrictions. Hey Fred We’re looking to switch over to a construction specific accounting software package. What are some factors that we need to be aware of in terms of implementation?

- Sam Hey Sam What a great question.

There are plenty of factors to consider in terms of implementation. The first thing would be setting a target date that you would like to be live on the system. A very popular time to go live is January 1st because it’s the beginning of the fiscal year, so it’s a great time to do it. Going live on January 1st is very achievable, but not your only option. You can also go live at the beginning of any quarter, or even any month. Regardless of when you decide to begin implementation, there are a few factors that you should be aware of: 1. Do the proper research to find out which accounting software is the best fit for your business. Take your time, make an informed decision, and have realistic expectations.

2. PLAN AHEAD and have a Go Live date in mind. The implementation period is different for each accounting

software package depending on the software you select. The best way to determine the latest you should start implementing your new accounting software is to work closely with your software vendor. Then you can create a realistic implementation plan. Many vendors have sold thousands of systems and have a lot of experience. They work with companies like yours and can give you a better idea as to how long it will take to implement your new software successfully.

3. It is always recommended that you go live on the 1st of the month (and this can be any month). This way, your open payables and receivables, trial balance in the General Ledger, jobs in progress, and payroll totals for the year match those in the old system. Some contractors choose the beginning of a quarter to go live because of certain payroll reports that run on a quarterly basis, but waiting for the beginning of a quarter will only save you a minimal amount of time during your conversion.

Some other factors that may affect your implementation time include: the size of your company, the type of accounting package you choose to implement,

and how much time you can devote to the implementation process. But you can consider new software anytime, and the best way for you to figure out your going live date is to PLAN and give yourself plenty of time (the more the better!)
