Founder and New Jersey Construction Association Executive Briant, Inducted into ARTBA Transportation Development Hall of Fame WASHINGTON — One of America’s top engineers, an asphalt equipment manufacturing innovator, a 40 year New Jersey construction association executive and the founder of a leading engineering firm were inducted June 3 into the 2013 American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Foundation’s “Transportation Development Hall of Fame.” Launched in 2010, the Hall honors individuals or families from the public and private sectors who have made extraordinary contributions to U.S. transportation development during their careers. A committee of judges comprised of nine construction industry journalists reviewed the nominees in two categories: Transportation Design and Construction Industry Innovators: Honors the men and women who discovered or created a “game changing” product or process that significantly advanced transportation design, construction and/or safety. It seeks to honor the original innovator. • Dr. J. Don Brock, founder of Astec Industries in Chattanooga, TN; • Othmar Hermann Ammann (posthumously), founder of Ammann & Whitney Consulting Engineers, now based in New York. Transportation Design and Construction Industry Leaders (Individuals or Families): Recognizes men, women and families who have made significant contributions — beyond just having successful businesses or careers — that have notably helped advance the interests and image of the transportation design, construction and safety in • Gene McCormick, a senior vice president of Parsons Brinckerhoff in Naples, FL; • Bob Briant, Sr., (posthumously), the long time CEO of the Utility & Transportation Contractors Association of New Jersey, in Allenwood; Innovators Category:

Don Brock — Dr. J. Don Brock, founded Astec Industries in 1972, creating a company that “builds the equipment that moves America and the world from rock to road and beneath.” The pioneering products and technologies he personally developed — he is the holder of over 90 U.S. and foreign patents on construction machinery and drying equipment — have touch virtually every phase of road building and related construction activity. In the process, he helped make our roads and equipment safer and more efficient, durable, environment friendly and profitable. Today, Astec Industries is America’s leading manufacturer of equipment for asphalt road building, aggregate processing, pipeline and utility trenching, oil, gas and water well drilling and wood processing, offering more than 200 products. Brock serves as executive chairman of the Astec board of directors. In 2012, the ARTBA Foundation’s TransOvation™ workshop and awards program were renamed in his honor. The event was created for the specific purposes of fostering innovative thinking within the transportation design and construction industry and publicly recognizing its proven innovators. The name plays off the meanings of three words — “transportation,” “innovation” and “ovation.” It includes an annual two and a half day workshop led by world renowned innovators from both within and outside our industry and an annual awards program. Othmar Hermann Ammann — Believed to be the greatest bridge builder of the 20th century, Othmar Hermann Ammann’s innovative genius was his ability to anticipate future challenges. Born in Switzerland, Ammann came to New York in 1904, where his gift for long span bridge design and forward thinking matched perfectly with the city’s need to connect its five growing boroughs and the island of Manhattan to the mainland U.S. Over the course of his

career, Ammann was commissioned in the design and construction of over 16 major bridge projects, founded two public port agencies and launched two private engineering firms, the latter of which, Ammann & Whitney, still stands today, 50 years after his death. His designs were the result of innovation upon innovation, culminating in record breaking and aesthetically beautiful structures, including the iconic George Washington Bridge (GWB). Seeing the great potential of “motor cars,” Ammann designed the GWB with future needs in mind. Originally constructed with six lanes and two sidewalks, Ammann left a 32-foot wide unpaved strip in the center of the GWB and provided enough capacity to accommodate a second, lower roadway, which were both utilized, in 1946 and 1958 respectively. At the time of its completion, it was the longest bridge span in the world. Until about the time of the GWB, bridge approaches were constructed such that traffic fed directly into local street networks. Recognizing that a distribution system of ramps and connecting roadways would be needed to disperse traffic, Ammann provided some of these more complex connections, and provided the capacity for even more, into his design of the GWB. From the monolithic plate steel on the BronxWhitestone towers, to the innovative truss system of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which took into account the curvature of the earth and was the longest suspension bridge in the world for almost 20 years, Othmar Ammann pushed the limits of possibility to deliver functional, forward thinking and awe inspiring structures that today define America’s landscape. Leaders Category: Gene McCormick — McCormick, a registered professional engineer, has nearly 50 years of varied transportation experience, encompassing planning, design, construction and operations in both the public and private sectors. He has been Par-

sons Brinckerhoff’s (PB) principal in charge or project manager on highway, bridge and airport projects across America and the world. He spent nearly seven years as project manager during the design and construction activities relating to the new 12 lane Woodrow Wilson Bridge near Washington, D.C. The $2.5 billion project was on time and on budget. Prior to joining PB, McCormick had a distinguished career in public service. From 1989-93, he was Federal Highway deputy administrator under President George H.W. Bush. He spearheaded development of the Bush Adm i n i s t r a t i o n ’ s highway/transit reauthorization proposal, signed into law in 1991 and known as the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act. McCormick also spent 25 years with the Illinois Department of Transportation, serving as deputy transportation secretary and director of the office of planning and programming. His ARTBA leadership positions put him in an elite class: 2005 chairman, senior vice chairman, first vice chairman, northeastern region vice chairman, chairman of the Highway Advisory Council, co-chair of the AR TBA-AASHTO-AGC Joint Committee, and current trustee on the ARTBA Foundation. He also was co-chairman of the ARTBA “TEA-21 Task Force,” which developed the association’s legislative blueprint for the surface transportation reauthorization bill-SAFETEALU-signed by President Bush in August 2005. Bob Briant, Sr. (19372013) — Bob Briant, Senior, was a New Jersey construction industry legend and tireless advocate. In 1972, he was named the first full time executive director of the fledgling Utility Contractors Association of New Jersey. He was guided by a simple principle. His organization should be the home for “those who strive to be the best.” In the early 1980s, as chief executive officer, he saw a major market development opportunity for his members, added the

“T” to the association’s name and became the state chapter affiliate of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association. Briant spearheaded the development of programs and services that made UTCA a full service association. In the process, the organization grew to include more than 1,100 members. He served as chairman and treasurer of the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust (NJEIT). Under his leadership, NJEIT began by issuing $50 million in low interest loans annually to local municipalities and sewer authorities to help them improve their systems. Today more than $500 million in annual loan are routinely available to the agencies. Briant helped start and served as chairman of the national Cleanwater Construction Coalition, a group that pushed for federal legislation to increase investment in wa-

ter and wastewater infrastructure. He retired in 2006 and passed away at the beginning of 2013. The 2012 Hall of Fame class, announced last November, was also inducted during the June 3 dinner and included: • Innovator: Harry Heltzer, former chairman and chief executive officer of 3M Company (posthumously); and • Leader: James R. Madara, senior vice president of Gannett Fleming in Allentown, PA. The ARTBA Foundation was established in 1985 as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt entity to “promote research, education and public awareness.” It supports an array of initiatives, including educational scholarships, awards, executive education seminars, roadway work zone safety and training programs, special economic reports and a national exhibition on transportation.

New winter storage facility for the Maid of the Mist begins by Jon M. Casey

In this photo provided by The Maid of the Mist organization, it is these tour boats that will be wintered over at the new Winter Maintenance Facility currently under construction downstream of the falls. As you approach the Maid of the Mist winter storage facility jobsite in Niagara Falls, NY, the most prominent feature at the fenced off, Discovery Center location, is the massive Manitowoc 888 Ringer Crane sitting atop a sturdy crane mat near the edge of the gorge overlooking the river. At the river’s edge some 200-feet below, is where a new dry dock and maintenance facility is taking shape at the site of the former Schoellkopf electrical power station. The need for the Maid of the Mist Corporation to develop this location is because they lost the use of the facility on the Canadian side of the falls where the company wintered over their boats during the off

season. In February 2012, following the news of their need to relocate, they began looking at the development of this existing site as the location. The new facility is scheduled for opening, later this year. According to spokesperson Kevin Keenan, the operation is run by the Maid of the Mist Corporation of Niagara Falls New York. “It was incorporated in 1892,” he said. “It’s been owned by the Glynn family of Lewiston, NY since 1971. About 2.5 million people come here every year on both sides of the border and when you’re on the Maid of the Mist you really get a sense for the world destination that it is. You see people from around the world and people really love that experience.” Keenan recalled that as soon as the need for the new site was confirmed, the company began planning for a self-funded project to build the new facility as quickly as possible. After careful planning and thorough legal procedures, the company looked to Parsons Brinckerhoff and LP Ciminelli for the design and construction of this $32 million project. Work began in late April 2013. Site tour What makes this project so unique is its location and footprint combined. Not only is it located at the bottom of a 200-foot gorge, the site is historic in nature as well. The location is part of Niagara Falls State Park (the first state park), that has been so designated, since the early years of our country. The Maid of the Mist tour itself began in 1846. Since then, Niagara Falls has been a tour destination for people from around the world. LP Ciminelli project engineer, Jasmine Marcucci, explained that from day one, extreme care for the site, the workers and the environment has been foremost in the planning. With the advantage of using a site that was built as a power station, and already near the river, the adaptation into a new, modern docking facility, was the ideal choice. One of the early challenges was to clean up the remnants of what was left behind following the cleanup of the damaged power plant. Early on, the crew was challenged to provide the necessary equipment and work force down to the jobsite without the current “amenities,” that have made the job a good bit easier today. Without the

In the first days, Clark Rigging worked to lower people, equipment and materials down to the jobsite while the All Crane Rental crews were setting up the larger Manitowoc 888 Ringer Crane. Clark provided the crane that East Coast Hoist used to assemble and install the buck hoist. “That took some time and ingenuity as they adapted the buck hoist to the face of the wall,” said Marcucci. “The hoist was originally designed to attach to high-rise building framework, so we needed to install an anchoring system into the cliff so that we could mount the buck hoist into place. Once that was completed a few weeks ago, we no longer needed to use the lift basket with the crane, as we once did.” Marcucci said that once the site prep work below was cleared to begin the building phase of the job, the lower dock concrete was poured as part of a night-

time phase of work. Workers took advantage of the river’s water level being lowered when the local electrical power authority diverts Niagara River water upstream to generate power when tourists are not visiting the falls. Once that part of the job was completed, the upper areas could be built. As we toured the site, workers were preparing to pour concrete for a ramp that would go from the lower level of the docking area to the upper level. This lower area is where the boats will be lifted out of the water and stored for the winter. This is because at this location, the Niagara River freezes over during the coldest part of the winter. The upper level of the project will house the maintenance facility where equipment and workers can do much of the off season maintenance required to keep the boats safe and operating efficiently. Marcucci said that the boat’s crane will be mounted on the location where a crew was currently drilling micro-piles to secure it to the dock. The crane is currently being built in Austria and will be shipped to the U.S. in September for installation in October. That portion of the project has a very tight window of opportunity, since the boats will need to be out of the water before the river freezes over to prevent damage to the boats. “Their timely arrival is a ‘must!’” she said. “At the peak of the project, we will have between 50 and 75 workers on site at the same time, with a total of 300 workers having worked at the site over the duration of the project,” she said. “These workers have worked extremely well together. They are all the best at what they do.” “Unlike just about all of the other projects we might work at, here, we have to adapt to what our environment gives us. In most cases, crews can move dirt and rock to prepare the site. They can move in equipment, materials and manpower and go to work. Here, the environment and logistics demand that the work be done in a certain order and in a specific way, or it doesn’t get done properly. Here, there is no access road to get materials in an out of the jobsite. Here, everything goes to and from the job either by crane or buck hoist,” she said. As part of the final project, an existing elevator shaft that was once a part of the power plant, will be gutted and rebuilt internally with a new elevator that will serve the new facility. “The structure is extremely sound,” she said. “The walls at the base of the elevator shaft are 12-feet thick. The shaft was built to last.”

A drilling crew prepares the micro-pilings where the crane to lift the boats from the water will mount. Marcucci concluded by saying that once the faciliDuring the first days of the project, a Clark Rigging ty is complete, crews will restore the hiking trail that crew lowers the body of a dozer down to the worksite parallels the river. Tishman Construction celebrates the installation of One World Trade Center spire At a symbolic 1,776feet high, the iconic tower is now tallest in the Western Hemisphere NEW YORK — On May 10, Tishman Construction, an AECOM company, worked with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to install the final two sections of One World Trade Center’s 408-foot spire. Now bolted in place, the spire brings One World Trade Center’s height to a symbolic 1,776-feet, making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. In addition to being an architectural feature, the 758 ton spire is also functional — serving as a beacon for Lower Man-

hattan and a state of the art broadcast facility that will provide transmission services for the region’s broadcasters. York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, added, “The installation of One World Trade Center’s final section of spire steel is a crowning triumph for everyone involved in the site’s rebuilding.” “Friday’s extraordinary milestone of One World Trade Center reaching 1,776-feet would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the workers from Tishman Construction,” said Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye. “For years, these fearless workers have toiled day after day, often during inclement weather and at great heights. We applaud their dedication in helping us reclaim New York City’s skyline.” “I am honored that our team was able to oversee this successful moment, and I thank all of the trade workers for their inspiring commitment,” noted Tishman’s Mike Mennella, executive vice president of World Trade Center projects. “Without them, this building could not have risen to its impressive and magnificent height.” Tishman and AECOM are currently contracted

by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Silverstein Properties to work on a number of projects at the Port Authority’s 16 acre site, including One World Trade Center, 3 World Trade Center, 4 World Trade Center, 7 World Trade Center, the Transportation Hub, Vehicle Security Center, retail component, as well as the comprehensive site and streetscape design. The Safety Zone: Demolition safety tips Demolition carries many of the same hazards that are found in construction. In addition to these risks, demolition also carries the risk of unknown hazards such as asbestos, or lead based paint. Before the demolition process begins OSHA standard 1926.850(a) requires that an engineering survey of the structure must be conducted by a competent person. This survey will give the supervisors and the crew more information about the structural integrity of the building’s frames, walls and floors. It will also give them the informa-

tion needed to prevent the structure from collapsing prematurely. This engineering survey should also include the location of the nearest hospital in case an injury occurs. Each supervisor should have instructions for the most direct route to the hospital. Before work begins the demolition area should be clearly marked so that only authorized employees are allowed on the premises. Employees should take time to prepare themselves for the demolition. One way of doing this is to select, inspect and wear proper PPE. Respirators, hearing

protections, hard hats and eye protection are just a few PPE items that may be needed for demolition, a supervisor should inform employees what PPE will be needed for the job. Having the proper fitting PPE gear can help prevent many injuries; although having the proper gear won’t do any good unless it is worn correctly. An important step in the planning process is locating the utility services. All sewer, water, gas and electric lines need to be shut off and the utility companies need to be notified. If utility lines need to be relocated all work-

ers should be notified of the new location. If employees are going to be working in a building that has been damaged in the past by fire, flood or other events that may have caused structural damage, make sure that the walls are shored or braced. Disposing of the debris from a demolition site also takes preparation. OSHA standard 1926.252(a) states that any debris that is dropped more than 20feet to any point lying outside the exterior walls of a building, an enclosed

chute of wood or equivalent material shall be used. A chute is defined as a slide that is closed in on all sides through which material is moved from a high place to a lower one. When blasting is the method of demolition a qualified person must complete a written survey before the demolition begins. Vibration tests should be conducted to determine safety limits so that nearby structures and property are not damaged. When working with explosives it is important to take precautions to keep fire and

sparks away from the explosive materials. When electronic detonators are going to be used radio frequency (RF) signals should not be near the demolition site as these signals can inadvertently trigger the detonator. These are just a few safety items for construction demolition. Demolition is a dangerous job and measures should be taken to ensure the safety of all employees. Hitachi launches two new Zaxis Dash 5 reduced tail swing excavators: ZX75US-5 and ZX85US-5 MOLINE, IL — Hitachi today introduced the newest models to join its Zaxis Dash-5 line — the ZX75US-5 and ZX85US-5. The two reduced tail swing excavators feature the same performance and reliability as the preceding Dash-3 series models, but include a variety of enhancements that make them more durable, productive and easy to maintain. “Our exclusive focus on excavators is especially evident in these new Dash-5 reduced tail swing models,” said Mark Wall, product marketing manager at Hitachi. “Whether you work in urban renewal, street repair, underground utilities or the landscape industry, these ultrashorts open up a wide range of possibilities.” The machines’ reduced tail swing design makes it easy for operators to navigate and work around obstacles and congested jobsites where traditional

excavators don’t fit. In addition, the machines combine a hydraulic boom system with an enhanced boom recirculation function to generate more aggressive boom/arm speed. This returns the arm to the dig position faster, in turn enhancing productivity. In addition to the ZX75US-5 and ZX85US5, Hitachi also offers the ZX135US-5 and ZX245USLC-5 reduced tail swing excavators. Key features of the new models include: • Comfort — Despite their short stature, the ultrashorts provide plenty of in-cab amenities. The cab is spacious and offers best in class visibility, more side to side leg room, an enhanced, easier to use multifunctional monitor and more. • Power — The next generation engines employ a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) platform paired with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to

meet EPA Final Tier 4/EU Stage IV emissions regulations. • Work modes —- Two productivity modes give operators the ability to choose the digging style that fits the job. Power delivers a balance of speed and fuel economy for normal operation. Economy reduces top speed and helps save fuel. • Durability — The machines come equipped with an efficient, heavy duty cooling system designed to run cool and quiet, even in high trash environments and high altitudes. Digging structures deliver long term reliability, and Hitachi’s exclusive boom design with three bulkheads within the boom resist torsional stress for unsurpassed durability. • Maintenance — The ZX75US-5 and ZX85US-5 feature upgrades designed to simplify maintenance. Features include self-cleaning steps, con-

Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software

Hey Fred I’m the owner of an excavation company, and I’m happy to say that I have a very capable staff both out in the field and in the office. But I wish there was some way I could quickly look at the numbers I need to see at the beginning and end of each day… all in one place. Is that too much to ask? - Bryan

Hey Bryan I don’t think it’s too much to ask at all! As an involved and proactive business owner, you know how crucial it is to be aware of your numbers, but it can certainly be cumbersome to access multiple parts of your accounting software to find what you’re looking for. So what can you to do to view all of this data in one place?

with drilldown capability, so you can see how well the company is doing overall, and then drill down into specific jobs. They’ll also offer general ledger dashboards, so that you can see financial data in real time and drill down for more detail, like cash flow information (which makes it really easy to see where your numbers came from). Finally, a sophisticated dashboard will give you the ability to drill right down to the transaction level to view invoices, change orders and more. If your current ac-

counting software offers dashboards, contact your vendor to see what you need to do to get them up and running. If you don’t have access to dashboards, it might be time to explore other accounting solutions that include them. They’re a great resource for owners, and really anyone in the company that wants to monitor the health of a company. Good luck! - Fred

Hey Fred

Many contractors are turning to the convenience of dashboards. These dashboards compile all the data you want to see on one screen, giving you a quick snapshot of how the company is doing through easy to read charts and graphs. This information is updated when changes are made in the system, so you’re always viewing real time data. What if you want to see more than just a snapshot? BOMAG 84-inch tandem drum roller designed to meet rigorous compaction demands KEWANEE, IL — Specifically designed to meet Superpave paving project demands, BOMAG’s BW284AD tandem drum vibratory roller features a high performance engine, enhanced joystick controls and a heavier operating weight. Equipped with a 160 hp Cummins diesel engine and a hydrostatic travel and vibration drive, the BW284AD offers more efficient operation

without sacrificing performance. The roller features operating frequencies up to 4,000 vpm, with centrifugal force output ranges from 34,665 pounds in low amplitude to 41,235 pounds in high amplitude. Large diameter 54-inch drums on the BW284AD minimize material shoving, while an 84-inch drum width delivers high productivity. The roller’s

hefty 28,425 pound operating weight provides a high static pound per lineal inch load, improving compaction performance on certain asphalt mix designs and during finish rolling applications. The BW284AD complements increased performance with a state of the art joystick control and electronic display system. With one joystick for steering and a separate joystick for travel control,

this exclusive system features complete fingertip control of all major machine functions. Button switches located at the tips of both joysticks engage and disengage drum vibration as well as provide manual control of the waterspray system. Maximum roller speed and vibration frequency values are electronically adjustable, allowing for optimum compaction performance.

The roller features a vibration isolated operator’s station that is designed for maximum visibility and comfort. Dual swivel seats enhance visibility of both the drum edges and working area, allowing the operator to easily monitor the rolling pattern. Additionally, operator’s station controls are fully adjustable for increased flexibility.

The pressurized waterspray system features two corrosion resistant polyethylene water tanks with a combined capacity of 340 gallons for extended time between fills. Primary fill port strainers, as well as suction filtration devices, minimize spray nozzle clogging and potential system damage.

Kenworth launches new T880 vocational truck LOUISVILLE, KY — Kenworth Truck Company launched the new Kenworth T880™ at the annual Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville. “Skillfully designed and robustly engineered, the new Kenworth T880 builds upon Kenworth’s distinguished 90 year heritage of quality, innovation and technology to produce industry leading, rugged and reliable vocational trucks,” said Gary Moore, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president. “As we celebrate Kenworth’s 90th anniversary, the T880 represents our heritage very well as the latest evolution of our quality product line, while also reinforcing Kenworth’s leadership in vocational truck performance. Vocational customers and drivers really demand a tough and durable truck in today’s challenging work environments, and we are confident the Kenworth T880 will surpass customer expectations,” said Kevin Baney, Kenworth chief engineer. “For example, the T880 features a panoramic windshield for enhanced visibility, quiet cab with its triple sealed and robust doors, five piece hood for easier and faster repairs, air assisted hydraulic clutch, complex reflector headlamps, excellent maneuverability and new lightweight, factory installed lift axles that vocational customers will especially appreciate,” Baney said. “On top of all that, we designed the T880 with distinctively sculpted lines that form an evolutionary, but uniquely Kenworth look.” The new T880 is for vocational applications, including dump, mixer, refuse and heavy haul. Its addition will complement Kenworth’s current vocational lineup that includes the T800, T440, W900S and C500. The T880 will be available for production later this summer. The Kenworth T880 is standard with the 12.9 liter PACCAR MX-13 engine. With its high end ratings of 500 hp and 1,850 pound foot of torque, the PACCAR MX13 engine provides a lightweight, fuel efficient

engine option for vocational applications, including dumps and heavy haul applications over 100,000 pounds The T880 also is available with the Cummins ISX15 engine with up to 600 hp and 2,050 pound foot of torque. The T880 uses Kenworth’s 2.1 meter wide, stamped aluminum cab, which is robotically assembled. The cab has a comfortable 23-inches of room between the seats. The T880 offers the premium Diamond VIT and Vantage trim levels and two interior color options of Sandstone Tan and Slate Gray. Here are key Kenworth T880 features: • Stamped Aluminum Cab: The lightweight cab is new for vocational applications. First introduced with the T680 in 2012, the cab’s extensive durability testing regimen focused on achieving the highest, demanding requirements for vocational trucks. Robotically assembled, the stamped aluminum panels are connected by HenrobÅ self-penetrating fasteners to produce an extremely durable cab with enhanced resistance to noise, vibration and corrosion. The cab also utilizes Kenworth’s signature cowl mounted mirrors for better visibility, increased durability and reduced adjustment. • Panoramic Windshield: The T880 is standard with a panoramic one piece, bonded-in windshield with superior visibility. The T880 windshield has excellent thickness to minimize the effect of rock incidents, offers efficient replacement time, and is much larger in size compared to the T800 windshield. • Robust Door: The lightweight, stamped aluminum door is extremely durable and robust enough to support up to 400 pounds. The door provides smooth airflow around the cab and minimizes noise inducing turbulence. A pressure relief valve equalizes interior and exterior air pressure to make the door easy to open and close. The door is triple sealed against the elements and road noise. Hood and Bumper: The

The hood, which offers easier and faster repair, is offered in two configurations, both with bolt-on fenders. The T880 is available in a 116.5-inch BBC. It also is available in a 122.5inch BBC standard length. Both include a five piece Metton hood. The stylish, signature Kenworth grille is made from corrosion resistant aluminum wire mesh for superior protection of cooling system components. The grille’s surround is made of polished stainless steel. With the advanced hood assist system, lifting the hood requires just 35 pounds of opening force. To aid in easy serviceability and replacements, the T880 is available with all the current T800 metal bumpers. • Lighting: The T880 is standard with dual lamp complex reflector headlamps, which offer best in industry headlamp performance at a lower cost and more durable package. All standard exterior lights utilize LED technology that provides a 20,000 hour life, which equates to about 15 years of truck life. LED lights are also used extensively in the cab and sleeper. • T880 Vocational Options: The T880 is available with five new, factory installed and lightweight Watson & Chalin lift axles, including a 10K offering for the first time and a 20K version with a 200 pound weight savings. Also offered are new steering gears for improved steering feedback and increased wheelcut for greater maneuverability.

• Driver Performance Center: The Driver Performance Center uses a full color, high resolution, 5inch Thin Film Transistor display screen, which includes current truck information, diagnostic data and popup alerts. The center also displays situational specific recommendations, which help improve vehicle performance. HVAC System: With industry leading standard Automatic Temperature Control, simply set the desired temperature, and the system maintains it. A one touch feature provides maximum defrost. These features help keep drivers comfortable while maintaining their focus on driving. • Seats: The Kenworth proprietary seats offer an advanced air suspension system that automatically adjusts to various driver weights. A full range of seat comfort is available to meet driver specific preferences. For the T880, Kenworth offers the DuraSupreme® heavy duty seat fabric in charcoal, gray and tan. • Kenworth Dash: The dash cluster has an easy to read layout with nine standard gauges and 12 additional gauges available. The switches utilize the toggling feature that drivers prefer, while maintaining rocker switch functionality. The T880 uses new electric over air dash switches introduced on the T680, and offers additional options to aid with vocational and body builder requirements. The Kenworth dash includes Kenworth NavPlus® — with hands free cell phone capability via Bluetooth connections and voice commands. NavPlus is standard with premium

COMMERCE CITY, CO — Atlas Copco has launched the FlexiROC T30 R radio remote control tophammer drill rig equipped with either a COP 1240 or COP 1640 drill for 2- to 3.5-inch holes. The standard hydraulic carousel type rod handling system uses 12-foot rods. The carousel carries four rods for a maximum drilling depth of 57-feet. The FlexiROC T30 R comes with an interim Tier

4 Cummins QSB4.5 turbo charged engine providing improved diesel consumption over its predecessor, the ROC D3 RRC. The rig’s low center of gravity and high ground clearance provide mobility over the most challenging terrain. It is well suited to demanding construction or small to medium size quarrying jobs. The FlexiROC T30 R can also handle specialized tasks such as installing self-drilling an-

chors, drilling blastholes in hard rock and dimensional stone quarrying. Maurice Hunter, Atlas Copco business line manager, said the FlexiROC T30 R rig’s extended boom coverage of 14-feet through an 80 degree radius was designed to save time and money by delivering more holes from fewer setups. The FlexiROC T30 R’s compact size means the FlexiROC T30 R can easi-

F inke & Sons, Inc. excited about new building by Jon M. Casey

Equipment is relocated temporarily while construction of the new 67,000-square-foot headquarters is being built. For the folks at Robert H. Finke & Sons, Inc. of Selkirk, NY, the groundbreaking and construction of a new 67,000-square-foot facility at their current location, is like that of children awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus once Thanksgiving has passed. Excitement fills the air as the staff eagerly looks forward to the move to the new facility. Expected completion date for the project is sometime toward the end of November this year and the entire team is eager to experience the amenities that the new building will provide. “We broke ground and began the site prep work last fall,” said Don Fiacco, who manages the daily operations. As we toured the new ‘headquarters’ construction project is currently under way behind the existing facility on Route 9W south of Selkirk, he noted that the new facility being located toward the rear of the property, will give them plenty of room for outdoor equipment displays and equipment storage as well. It will also offer more customer parking, out front. “That will be a tremendous benefit.” Fiacco described the new facility telling how it will

bring an exciting new look to the company. He said the new amenities would add value to the Finke and Sons brand. “There will be a tech room, a ‘smart’ room with a 50 seat training capability,” he said. “We will be able to bring in our customers and a new piece of equipment and thoroughly train them in the training facility. We plan to open it up to manufacturers as well. They will be able to bring in clients for regional training.” “The entire project is due to the forward thinking of John Finke, our company president and Bob Finke’s son,” he said. “When John, began planning for this new building, he took into consideration all of the things that we would need to do all that we currently do, do well. He also was looking to the future and how we might better serve our customers.” For example, Fiacco said that the new building would have eight drive thru bays for service and repair. It will have custom manufacturing capabilities as well. There will be a 30-foot x 100-foot fabrication shop, a 30-foot x 100-foot wash bay and an additional 20-foot x 60-foot paint booth. The new building will

be equipped to do what they currently do in the four buildings that make up the existing operation. They will feature sales and rentals, service, parts and fabrication as part of the overall business. The building will have radiant heat, two overhead cranes and it will have a weld shop that will have its own overhead crane as well. With all the added features, worker safety has been a primary consideration in the planning. Fiacco said that the building features a clean burn boiler that uses old engine oil as fuel. “The roof structure will be built to not only handle the snow that we might experience in the years to come, but it will also be able to support a solar panel array for future solar supplied electrical power,” he said. It is interesting to note the progress of the company, especially in light of its new milestone, that of an expansion from the existing building that has housed the business since its move from the original location

A portion of a Hard Hat News article (June 17, 1992), that hangs prominently on their sales room wall, tells of the company’s growth and expansion into the “then-new,” 11,000-square-foot building on the west side of the road. The company, started by Robert H. Finke in 1977, has grown over the years, to become one of the largest equipment dealers in all of New York State. With more than 500 pieces of equipment in their fleet, Robert H. Finke & Sons, Inc. is ready to serve New York and New England. Be sure to watch for an announcement of their grand opening, later this year. For more information, visit their website at www.finkeequipment.com or give them a call at 518-7679331.
