by Melanie Parker The Clark Group, which includes Clark Rigging & Rental Corp. and Niagara Erecting, Inc., enters its 55th year in business, in the capable hands of the second generation of family management. Following in the footprints created by their father, Floyd “Red” Clark, siblings David Clark, Steven Clark and Diane (Clark) Bielinski, have made a seamless transition of business leadership to the next generation because of the careful thought that has gone into how they continue to operate and grow this challenging business. Their success is based on the valuable experience provided by their dynamic father “Red.” Clark, the founder and innovative leader of this family business, left an impressive legacy of solid growth, and a working culture that stresses customer satisfaction and leadership in the construction market. President Dave Clark recalls one example of his father’s legacy is, “You have to spend money to keep current with the ever evolving construction industry. He encouraged us to buy and maintain the best equipment, pairing it with the best employees. Our ever expanding crane fleet exemplifies that tradition. We have just taken delivery of a new 400 ton crane. We are always studying the industry to find new solutions for efficient rigging problems,” says Dave. Brother Steve agrees. He says their father had nerve unlike most business owners. He would take jobs that others avoided. “We continue this thinking today when we work with men like Nik Wallenda, who walked in our office one morning and said ‘I’m going to wire walk over Niagara Falls’. How did we respond? We said, ‘How can we help and when can we start?’” “You never know what type work you will be offered, but usually it involves difficulties and danger inherent in lifting,” added Steve. “We have the confidence to tackle these jobs because of our years of experience and our trust in our abilities. Our safety record is the best.” Diane, the company’s comptroller, oversees the administrative responsibilities, which includes ways to fund their growing business safely. It takes devoted concentration to keep the business financials strong, to meet local, state and federal paperwork requirements and to keep an eye on growth opportunities as well. Diane said that she too, thanks her father who led by example and showed those under his leadership, how to persevere in good and bad times. “He also instilled in us the courage to make the tough decisions that go along with a truly family business,” she said.

The Safety Zone: Equipment and attachment safety Attachments for equipment are becoming more popular in the field; they offer a cost effective way to accomplish different tasks using only one piece of equipment. Like any other piece of equipment, there are hazards associated with it. It is important to make sure employees have read the safety manual; this will help ensure that the capabilities of the attachments are understood and they are used for their intended purpose. Things to remember when operating equipment with attachments • Observe all safety precautions;

fects immediately which could create a hazardous condition; and • All vehicles must be turned off and parking procedures followed when vehicle is unattended. Hazards to be considered are 1. getting caught in the pinch points of the buck arms or the pivot area of an articulated machine, 2. collision, 3. spilling a load, 4. hydraulic leaks, 5. the operator slipping and or falling when mounting or dismounting the equipment, 6. mechanical failure, and 7. a raised bucket falling. Backup cautiously and be aware of your surroundings. Never

permit riders on the equipment. The jarring and bouncing could cause someone to be thrown off. Be cautious of overhead hazards. Have the bucket lowered to the ground unless the work planned requires that it be raised. In-

stall blocks under raised buckets or arms so they cannot fall on you. For more information please contact Catamount Consulting at 518-6232352 or visit our website at www.catamountconsultingllc.com.

• Don’t stand between the equipment and the attachment; • Keep all shields and guards in place; • Don’t operate the equipment if shields or guards are missing; • Before performing adjustments or maintenance, make sure the engine is shut off and implement motion has stopped;

The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA) which represents the $725 billion equipment finance sector, revealed its Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2013. Given that every year U.S. businesses, nonprofits and government agencies spend in excess of $1.2 trillion in capital goods or fixed business investment (including software), financing more than half of those assets, these trends impact a significant portion of the U.S. economy. Businesses considering acquiring equipment this year will consider nu-

merous end user benefits while weighing continued uncertainty related to economic conditions and fiscal policies. “Equipment acquisition plays a critical role in driving the supply chains across all U.S. manufacturing and service sectors. We have distilled recent research data, including the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation’s 2013 Equipment Leasing & Finance U.S. Economic Outlook Report and U.S. Equipment Finance Market Study 2012-2013, industry participants’ expertise, and member input from ELFA meetings and

conferences to provide our best insight for the top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2013,” said ELFA President and CEO William G. Sutton, CAE. ELFA issued the following Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2013 to help businesses with their strategic equipment acquisition plans: 1. Corporate perceptions of the economic outlook will be a primary driver of business investment decisions. Despite pressing considerations such as technological innovations and aging equipment, the economy will be the true

barometer for whether or not businesses acquire new equipment in 2013. 2. Equipment investment will pick up in the second half of 2013. Equipment investment will grow this year, although the rate of growth will be hampered by fiscal uncertainty. Some companies will remain cautious about taking on large capital investments even now that important decisions impacting short term fiscal stability have been made. Equipment acquisition activity will gain

Hey Fred Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software

Hey Fred -

Hey Marco -

We’re a small contractor and finally got our year closed… but it was a crazy process, especially the payroll portion! Is there anything I can do now to prepare for next year or any tools that can make year end easier? - Marco

Year end can certainly be a stressful time, particularly with payroll! There are deadlines to meet and certain factors that are out of your control. For instance, this year the government waited until Jan. 1, 2013 to vote on final tax tables for 2013! There’s really nothing you can do about that, but there are some things you can do to make your next year end easier. When it comes to payroll, there are a

few tasks you can take care of throughout the year instead of waiting until the end, like verifying all of your employees names, addresses, zip codes and Social Security numbers. You can also track third party sick pay throughout the year so you don’t have to scramble once December rolls around!

ware and services, plus they give you the opportunity to ask questions and get answers right away.

In addition, there are a few tools that can help. There are both accounting software packages and payroll services that offer products to simplify and streamline year end for contractors. This includes prep material like year end checklists, workbooks and instructions to keep you on task as you close your year end, and to ensure that you don’t forget anything. Live webinars with construction payroll experts help to explain processes with specific soft-

- Fred

Ultimately, it comes down to having the right processes in place and having the resources on hand to make year end a little more bearable. Good luck!

momentum through relief from the policy uncertainty that brought the economy to the edge of the fiscal cliff. An improving housing sector will provide an added boost. 3. Pent-up demand will spur investment across varied equipment types. Demand for replacement equipment will drive investment in the construction, agriculture and transportation categories in particular, while other equipment types will await the replacement cycle. However, greater economic improvements will be needed before significant equipment investment expansion takes place. 4. A continuing low interest rate environment will enable companies to acquire the equipment they need and con-

serve cash. The prospect of continued low interest rates at least through 2014 will be an incentive for businesses to acquire equipment through financing and still hold on to their cash for uncertainties. In addition to maintaining cash flow, equipment financing will help businesses preserve capital and improve expense planning in challenging economic conditions. 5. A majority of U.S. businesses will use some form of financing for equipment acquisition. In 2013, $742 billion (55 percent) of the projected $1.3 trillion investment in plant, equipment and software investment in the United States will be financed through loans, leases and lines of credit. Seven out of 10 businesses will use at least one form

of financing to acquire equipment. 6. Business size will impact equipment acquisition. Size will matter when acquiring equipment in 2013. Primarily larger businesses anticipate increasing equipment spending over the next 12 months. Small companies’ high degree of concern about general economic conditions and less access to credit will temper their equipment acquisition plans. 7. The gaining prominence of cloud computing will transform the way businesses pay for IT investments. Along with changes in how companies consume software and hardware, cloud computing will spawn new financing options. Companies will look to equipment financiers for variable payment structures in the cloud. 8. Credit market conditions will remain favorable for long term equipment financing. Businesses will generally find an improving credit supply as they consider equipment acquisitions.

9. The one year extension of bonus depreciation may provide incentives for businesses to acquire equipment. The continuation of the depreciation bonus will allow businesses to deduct up to 50 percent of the cost of new equipment purchases in 2013. 10. Although the value of lease financing will remain, businesses will begin to adapt their equipment acquisition strategies to comply with long awaited changes to lease accounting standards. A new draft of proposed changes to lease accounting standards by the Financial Accounting Standards Board and the International Accounting Standards Board should be announced this year, enabling businesses to begin to evaluate how their balance sheets, earnings and other financials will be affected by equipment financing agreements. Superior Walls withstand devastation of Hurricane Sandy NEW HOLLAND, PA — With many coastal areas of New Jersey taking the full brunt of Hurricane Sandy’s damaging effects, it’s surprising that any structures survived. But, once the flood waters cleared, several homeowners with Superior Walls foundation systems found they could quickly and easily return to their homes. When Scott and Sherri Nevins evacuated their Barnegat, NJ home 12 hours before Hurricane Sandy struck, they had no idea what they’d find when they returned. Several days later the couple came back and was amazed at the damage in their neighborhood — and even more astonished at their own home. “We found lots of debris around our home and a little sand in the garage,” says Scott Nevins. “We sprayed out the garage and that was it — cleanup done! While others in our neighborhood were not as fortunate, we’re reaping the benefits of our smart decision in 2009 to include Superior Walls in the construction of our home. “Initially we selected the product because it provided a straight foundation for the framer and it wouldn’t sway like a house on pilings. Since this is a windy location, we also liked the idea that the garage was airtight with the Superior Walls foundation. Now, when we look around and see the extensive damage other homeowners face, we’re exceptionally grateful that we selected this precast concrete system.” Nevins points out that there was no sheet rock or insulation mess in his garage from the flood waters to clean up after the storm. The surge of 18inches of water in his garage was easily cleaned up and life went back to normal for the family. In Ortley Beach, NJ, one of the hardest hit areas from the storm, builders were amazed that an under construction Superior Walls foundation was completely unaffected by the hurricane. Total devastation surrounds the construction site that was undamaged by the storm. “There are numerous stories of Superior Walls projects simply defying

Mother Nature in New Jersey during this storm,” says John Ruga with Northeast Precast Superior Walls. “One home in Strathmere, NJ was left completely unharmed by the hurricane while neighboring houses were severely damaged. This particular house has above grade Superior Walls with flood vents. As the waters rose, they went through the vents and let the house with little to no damage.” The Superior Advantage As opposed to concrete blocks or poured concrete, precast concrete panels by Superior Walls are steel reinforced and created in the manufacturing process with DOW® Styrofoam™ boards, which provide excellent rigid foam insulation. The resulting wall panels provide a dry, warm, damp

resistant and exceptionally energy efficient foundation for a home. “If you’re constructing a home, the foundation selection is critical for building an energy efficient structure,” says Jim Costello, president of Superior Walls. “Choosing a precast Xi™ or Xi Plus™ concrete foundation can help reduce heat loss in a home. That’s a ‘bottom line’ consideration that has long term financial benefits for a homeowner. “In addition, in extreme weather situations like Hurricane Sandy, there’s a great deal of ‘peace of mind’ from knowing that your foundation system can really handle severe weather conditions. Each storm is different, but to continue hearing ‘survival stories’ from homeowners who had minimal damage as a result of the superstorm really proves the

durability of these precast foundation systems.” Superior Walls insulated precast concrete wall systems have earned the Green Approved Product designation by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Research Center. For homeowners, the benefits of Superior Walls foundations systems are substantial. The energy efficient walls help lower energy costs and reduce energy leakage while providing increased living space in a comfortable setting. Builders also benefit from saved job site time and labor when certified Superior Walls installation crews set the walls in place in less than one day, so that home construction can immediately begin the following day. Each Superior Walls panel is custom made to

Seeing what can’t be seen LATHAM, NY — Underground Imaging Technologies (UIT) uses technology to see what can’t be seen beneath the earth’s surface. “Today’s environment is competitive with tighter budgets and expedited timelines” explains Deborah Osterhoudt, vice president, UIT Northeast Operations. “In this atmosphere, project delays due to unknown or poorly mapped utilities can significantly impact the bottom line of the project. The challenge increases as we work to develop and execute competitive project bids while maintaining a safe work site. As a Caterpillar Affiliate, UIT is part of the solution to this challenge. UIT provides detailed information about the subsurface environment enabling project owners, design engineers and contractors to proceed with projects with an accurate assessment of the subsurface resulting in a more cost effective, efficient project and a safer work site.” UIT employs geophysical tools to take a non-destructive “look” beneath the surface. With the data gathered in these subsurface investigations, UIT creates maps of utilities and structures hidden from view. This information is shared with project owners and engineers in the design phase of a project and with contractors during the bidding, planning and execution of a construction project. On select Caterpillar equipment, this subsurface information can be loaded into the controls, providing the operator with an alert system when

When it comes to hard stone for the Northeast Region, Dyer Quarry, Inc. is the one to call! by Jon M. Casey

For companies who are looking for high quality diabase, more commonly known as trap rock, customers in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey look to Dyer Quarry, Inc. (one of the Anderson Companies) of Birdsboro, PA as a major supplier. The aggregates that come from this Berks County operation are ideal for specialty uses like railroad ballast, pre-stressed concrete and other high stress concrete products. With approximately 100 million tons of permitted diabase reserves remaining, Dyer Quarry, Inc. is positioned to be a future leader in the area for supplying those specialty products. “We are currently mining at the 220-foot level,” said Bill Hedl, sales representative for Dyer Quarry, as he

Dyer Quarry's processing plant supplies high quality, hard stone aggregates throughout the northeast region. served as our tour guide when Pennsylvania Aggregate and Concrete Association members who took a tour of the facility in mid-year 2012. “The mining site is 4400-feet long and 1100-feet wide,” he said. “We are permitted down to 460-feet, but currently, we are at 220-feet. In a good year, we will approach two million tons of production, so we are prepared for the foreseeable future.” Hedl explained that shot rock is brought to the primary crusher in any of seven haul trucks currently available at the plant. “We have four 773s; one 769 and two 990s,” he said. “They dump the material into our 6084 Birdsboro Buchanan Jaw Crusher. It’s a pretty remarkable crusher.” From there, the rock is conveyed to the processing plant where it is put through dual 30-inch gyratory crushers and screened into a number of products. Approximately half Dyer’s aggregate is loaded into rail cars in the facility’s train car loading system. The remaining material goes out via truck. “We re-screen and wash the aggregate before loading it into railcars,” said Hedl. “The material goes from the plant to the tipple on a 42-inch load belt and can be loaded into railcars at the rate of 1000 tons per hour. We have our own switch engine so that we can move the cars around and get them filled quickly. We have siding space for about 200 railcars.” Hedl said that there are approximately 20 workers on site when the quarry is in full operation. Their primary product line is a very dense material that ranges from 2.96 to 3.0 g/cm3. Some of the lineup includes 3’inch, 67s, 57s, 8s and Sand. He said that on the production side of the plant operations, much of the equipment is installed in a parallel configuration so that downtime is minimal. If repairs need to take place, there is a parallel crusher, screen, or conveyor to keep the material flowing while the work on the non-operational equipment is being done.

Dyer's 1000 ton per hour train car loading facility is basically an automatic, “no touch” unit.

Greg Barwis, general manager of the operation, told the group that the original quarry was founded in the 1950’s and operated under the name of John T. Dyer Quarry. In 1998, James J. Anderson bought the operation and the name was officially changed to Dyer Quarry, Inc. Comprised of 525 acres of land, the facility is served by the Norfolk Southern Rail Line. With the recent addition of the company’s new hydraulic truck scales and main office building, trucks can easily be weighed, ticketed and on the way to their destinations. Easy access to the PA Turnpike highway system, makes transporting material by truck safe and easy. For more information on Dyer Quarry, Inc. visit their website at www.dyerquarry.com.

ley, to be a guest in my booth at Hard Hat.” During the NYSAPLS program, Smalley, an engineer by degree and the Northeast Director of Business Development for UIT, shared with her audience that simply buying a Radio Frequency (RF) Pipe and Cable Locator or Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) equipment is equivalent to purchasing a medical CAT scanner without consulting with a radiologist to interpret the imaging results. “Television shows, such as CSI, have the potential to misrepresent the industry,” she explains. “Bones buried beneath the surface do not simply show up on the monitor. At UIT, we have a staff of scientists and geophysicists that analyze the data. Part of my job involves educating potential clients to explain the capabilities and limitations of geophysical equipment.” Smalley will be available to answer questions from Hard Hat attendees during the two day show at Featherstone Supply at Booth 50 in the Main Hall. “We have found human remains, however,” counters Smalley. “Although we’re not CSI, we do work with state agencies, archeologists and cemetery owners to identify disturbances in the subsurface, such as human burials and historic foundations, but this is not the main focus of our business.” UIT works primarily with project owners, engineers and contractors to locate and map underground utilities. APWA North American Snow Conference set for Charlotte, NC KANSAS CITY, MO — This year, more than 1,500 winter weather professionals from cities, towns, counties and rural street divisions, as well as state and provincial transportation departments from across North America, will converge in Charlotte, NC in April for the American Public Works Association (APWA) North American Snow Conference. With the variety of winter weather

events occurring each year, even as far south as Dallas and Atlanta, winter maintenance programs now include more than just snow removal. This year’s APWA Snow Conference, known as “The Show for Snow,” will offer four days of winter maintenance education and an expanded lineup of fleet and emergency management sessions,

as well as an excellent exhibit program at the Charlotte Convention Center, April 7-10, 2013. “The 2013 Snow Conference attendees will have the opportunity to sit in on many outstanding educational sessions featuring the best in snow and ice control, as well as the increased lineup of fleet and emergency management solutions,” said APWA Executive Director, Peter B. King.

“If your job involves any aspect of winter weather, the North American Snow Conference has something for you. It’s four days of quality educational sessions and networking, technical tours, as well as an exhibit floor with expanded open hours and more than 120 companies showcasing everything from in-

ed to a specific utility type; utility company or even what is shown on the records. UIT investigates the entire

project area to accurately locate the utilities known to exist on site and the ones you didn’t know were there.”

APWA 17

Seeing from 15 Orlando, FL, has worked throughout the country. “We recently completed the field work for a subsurface investigation at a wastewater treatment plant in upstate New York,” states Smalley. “Over a three week period, we used geophysical equipment, including UIT’s TerraVision II®, a multi-channel GPR system designed by UIT, to locate and capture subsurface data points throughout the utility dense plant. The data is now with our staff for interpretation and mapping and will be shared with the civil engineer of record for use in his design of a flood wall to protect the treatment plant from future adverse weather conditions.” The information will later be shared with the contractor to prevent utility damage during the construction phase of the flood wall. The detailed underground utility map of the plant will find a final home with the facility engineers, as a reference for daily operations and future design and construction projects.

UIT’s geophysical toolbox holds more than RF and GPR. On a project for New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Catskill Aqueduct, UIT employed Time Domain Electromagnetic Induction (TDEMI) to locate a series of three 9-feet, 5-inch diameter, buried pipelines. “We liken electromagnetic induction,” explains Smalley, “to a metal detector on steroids”. For this project, we used another UIT exclusive product called MetaVision II® to locate and map the pipelines.” UIT couples its geophysical equipment with industry standard survey equipment, including a RTK GPS receiver and a laser robotic total station, for collection of high-precision geo-referenced location information. “Not all of our projects involve detailed location and mapping,” concludes Osterhoudt. “We often work with contractors to locate and mark utilities on active project sites. But unlike the standard One Call system, we are not limit-

demand to provide a well rounded overview of all aspects of snow and ice control.” On Monday, April 8, the Opening General Session Talk Show, titled “Public Works and Emer-

On Wednesday, April 10, from 8 a.m. - 12 noon, the morning is dedicated entirely to three Technical Tour programs. Charlotte Street Maintenance Facility Tour: The Charlotte Department of Transportation Northwest Operations Yard and Administrative Facility is a state of the art facility, built in 2006. This tour of the facility will highlight the division’s snowfighting equipment, the 5,000 ton salt storage building, and its highly effective salt brine manufacturing system with 10,000 gallons salt brine and 5,000-gallon calcium chloride storage capacity. Technicians from the city of Charlotte’s Fleet Management Division will also be on hand to demonstrate the tools and equipment used to fight snow and ice on more than 5,200 lane miles of city roadway and maintain the 6,200+ pieces of rolling and non-rolling stock used throughout the city

and county. This tour also functions as the hands-on supplement to the education session “Biodiesel in Winter — What You Need to Know.” As an extension of the education session, you will also be able to perform easy biodiesel testing that you can take back to work. Freightliner Trucks Tour: This tour highlights the Freightliner Trucks’ Mount Holly Plant. Thanks to their more than 630,000 -squarefeet of floor space and approximately 1,550 employees, the Mount Holly facility was recently able to celebrate the production of its 500,000th vehicle — a Freightliner Business Class M2. Opened in 1979, the Mount Holly Plant originally produced long haul heavy duty Freightliner trucks for customers in the eastern United States and Canada. Discover the major renovation and expansion that took place in 2002 that readied the plant for M2 production and allowed them to hit this historical milestone. Michael Waltrip Racing Shop Tour: This tour is located in Cornelius, NC, and features the Michael Waltrip Racing Shop that encompasses over 11 acres and more than 140,000 square feet of NASCAR excitement. Opened in 2007, the complex houses Michael Waltrip Racing’s three SPRINT Cup Series race teams: Clint Bowyer (No. 155 Hour Energy Toyota Camry), Mark Martin ( No. 55 Aaron’s Toyota Camry) and Martin Truex Jr. (No. 56 NAPA Toyota Camry). During this tour, participants can observe the inner workings of production, such as the machine shop, shocks, suspension, gears and transmission, paint booth, fabrication and final assembly departments as technicians build the cars you see every weekend on TV. In addition, you’ll see short films throughout the tour that further detail the immense amount of work it takes to get these machines on the race track. Weather and schedule permitting, you can even watch a LIVE Pit Practice session.

Promotion recognizes leadership as AEM executes its strategic plan to enhance member services The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) has named Charlie O’Brien as senior vice president in recognition of his expanded leadership responsibilities for the association. These include activities under AEM’s new strategic plan, initiated in 2012, to better serve all members’ current and future business development needs. In addition to increased responsibilities since joining AEM in 2007, O’Brien has taken a leadership role with expanded responsibilities in development of strategic initiatives to achieve the plan’s Key Result Area (KRA) goals and objectives and AEM goals development to continue implementation of the strategic plan. He was also instrumental in development of the vision for launch of AEM’s successful AG CONNECT Expo and Summit, now on its third show, to take place January 2931, 2013 in Kansas City, MO. The initial AEM strategic initiatives focus on increased advocacy, a services plan to respond to membership survey results and a new financial model to sustain expanded services and activities. New initiatives being implemented for 2013 include increased member engagement, market information services and global business development. “This is not another layer of management; it is a way to improve our service to

the membership and better represent the industry through better use of staff capabilities. Charlie serves as the recognized face and voice of AEM agriculture activities, and provides the solid management and leadership credentials to enable AEM to achieve this higher level of action,” stated AEM President Dennis Slater. O’Brien joined AEM in 2007 as vice president. He serves as agriculture sector leader and also oversees AEM’s market information, technical/safety and member services areas. O’Brien came to AEM with more than 20 years of experience in the off road equipment industry. This includes president and CEO of FPC Financial as well as Farm Plan & AgLine (Canada) product manager and sales manager for John Deere Financial; branch manager and director of strategic initiatives for Deere Financial’s England operations; and Deere Financial management positions in sales, market and business development and risk management. AEM is the North American based international trade group providing innovative business development resources to advance the off road equipment manufacturing industry in the global marketplace. AEM membership comprises more than 850 companies and more than 200 product lines in the agriculture, construction, forestry, mining and utility sectors worldwide. AEM is headquartered in Milwaukee, WI, with offices in the world capitals of Washington, D.C., Ottawa, Canada and Beijing, China.
