When asked about effectively training employees, Ron Witt a Catamount Consulting employee and certified MSHA instructor with over 24 years of experience had this to offer: “The key word here is effective. We know that tasks are different. We need to remember that so are people. Effective task training will most likely be different for different people even though the task is the same. There are many factors to understand regarding task

training. Task training is basically “Instructions”. One factor for example, is understanding when “instructions” stopped and “practice” started. Take task training for operating mobile equipment. There are the instructions on what levers do what, how to inspect it properly and all the hazards related to those instructions. Then, there’s the “practice” of learning the controls and characteristics of the equipment. That part is not really “task training” it is

practice. Our job when we do “effective” task training is to make sure the instructions are comprehensive enough to allow workers to practice safely.” OSHA requires that all lift trucks before they are run, be inspected daily or before each shift for operations that run equipment in shifts. Inspecting the equipment before it is run helps ensure that the vehicle is being properly maintained and in safe working order. Preoperation inspections don’t take very long to complete and they reduce the risk of injury to employees and damage to the equipment. Below is an example of a checklist for a forklift. This inspection checklist is used to help identify safety and operational readiness of the machine you are operating. Your daily inspection should include, but not be limited to the following: Before starting • Check for proper levels of engine oil, brake fluid, hydraulic oil etc; • Check all appropriate sight glasses; and • Visually inspect tires for proper inflation, wheels and rims for missing or loose lug nuts and cracks. If there is any abnormal bulging immediately move away and contact maintenance personnel • Visually inspect the underside of the

machine for indications of damage and leakage; • Make sure the access ladder is free of debris and in general good condition; • Visually check booms, forks etc. for cracks and other wear and tear; • Check service sticker and let maintenance personnel know if you are close to needing your machine serviced (usually at 20 hours and again at 10 hours); and • Allow equipment to warm up 10-15 minutes before operation Before operation • Check horn; • Operate mast to total height; • Check all gauges and indicators for proper reading; • Make sure windows and mirrors are clean; • Remove or secure trash, tools or any loose objects that could jam a control; • Ensure that the area around the machine is clear, and check backup alarm and braking system before operation begins; and • Complete required inspection reports. Report mechanical problems and safety hazards immediately, and most of all, do not operate an unsafe machine. Proceed with caution and follow all surface haulage safety rules and procedures. Terex Woodsman name changes to Terex Environmental Equipment FARWELL, MI —Terex Woodsman changes its name to Terex Environmental Equipment (TEE) reflecting their expanding market and customer base and aggressive product development program for 2013. This name change takes effect immediately. Kieran Hegarty, Terex Materials Processing president said, “The change in name forms part of our go to market and product strategy for the business that was acquired by Terex in June 2011. This new title is more encompassing and supports our customers’ needs in looking for a more cohesive solution to their wood processing and environmental needs. This business line will be the single provider of wood processing and environmental equipment within Terex. The arborist product line will continue to reflect an element of the woodsman name and legacy in its product nomenclature, but all other products previously offered by the Terex Woodsman name will change to Terex Environmental Equipment.” Barry DeLau II, general manager of Terex Environmental Equipment said “historically our arborist, whole tree biomass chipper and trommel lines have been sold in North America. As Terex environmental equipment continues to broaden its product portfolio and distribution network, this name is more reflective of our business. We will also be looking to expand our distribution by leveraging other Terex business segments in to the rental markets.

Utilization of existing and proven Terex technologies, and a strong focus on R&D will drive our new product development program. Supported by a dedicated engineering, sales and customer support team. Terex environmental equipment will quickly become one the strong players in the wood processing, environmental and recycling industries.” All TEE products will be manufactured at Terex Corporation’s Farwell facility with the exception of the trommel line which will be manufactured in Dungannon in Northern Ireland. Technical Support and Parts will also be managed from the Farwell facility. Customers will begin to see the change in product nomenclature and livery at forthcoming trade shows throughout 2013. “A positive return on investment. Our loyal employees and Volvo have helped us do that…” Trevor Reid – president/CFO NorSask Forest Products Limited Partnership. History… the factual record of things past… and everyone fully understands that you can’t change history! Local historians, based in the north central regions of the Canadian Province of Saskatchewan record that in the very early decades of the current century there was a busy sawmill and a heavy equipment dealer group, both in the startup phase

and both achieving a recognized portion of success. This customer success story will not only recount the history of these two companies but more importantly that of a pair of Volvo wheel loaders… and certainly nobody associated with NorSask Forest Products Limited Partnership nor Redhead Equipment Ltd. would want to change or even tamper with this ‘wheel loader’ bit of history. First the history part of our story. In the spring of 2001, a modest, familyowned company that was successfully specializing in the sale and service of agriculture and medium duty construction equip-

ment was awarded the province wide franchise for the relatively ‘new to Canada’ Volvo Construction Equipment line of heavy equipment. This was the opportunity that Regina, Saskatchewan based Redhead Equipment had been looking for to take them take them to the next level while rewarding them with a positive return on investment. A few hundred kilometers away, in the forestry resources rich area of Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, NorSask Forest Products a moderately sized, very productive sawmill operation was also breaking into the big leagues and were

in need of a wheel loader that would fit their demanding requirements. Enter Chuck Miles, a young customer service representative who had just successfully completed his professional and intense Volvo Construction Equipment training in Asheville, NC. NorSask Forest Products was in Chuck’s territory… as a matter of fact, as he tells it, in those early days all of the Province of Saskatchewan was in his territory. Chuck was aware that Redhead Equipment had placed their first order with Volvo Construction Equipment and that order included a Volvo L70D wheel loader.

Calling on NorSask Forest Products, he learned that this busy lumber sawmill was looking to add a new wheel loader to their growing heavy equipment fleet. The competition was strong for this order, but Chuck was also aware that NorSask had a little experience with Volvo wheel loaders as they had recently purchased a used Volvo L70C with which they were very pleased. As a result of this positive experience when he approached the company they had no hesitation in signing a purchase order for the new Volvo L70D giving Redhead Equipment a quick start with Volvo… much to the dismay of the other regional heavy equipment dealers. The results Today, almost 30,000 productive hours later, that first Volvo L70D sold by Redhead Equipment is still working daily in NorSask’s Meadow Lake operation. Now, almost 30,000 hours on the meter of a wheel loader may not be historically significant, but 30,000 hours of hard labor, in what could be best described as extremely difficult working conditions and having the complete drivetrain remaining untouched and intact certainly is. “We have never had a problem with this loader,” states Chuck Brander, heavy equipment mainte-

nance supervisor for NorSask. “It continues to work every shift and we have never had to do anything to it, the drivetrain is all original, it just keeps running. Our results with Volvo have been very good.” It’s worthy to note that the company’s slightly older Volvo L70C has worked right alongside its younger counterpart amassing almost as many operational hours and only has had the fuel injectors replaced. Other than that, its drivetrain remains virtually untouched. ROI help NorSask Forest Products specializes in the production of eight and nine foot stud lumber, and has a capacity of 140,000,000-board-feet annually. Over fifty percent of their product is shipped to and consumed in the midwest USA with the balance being sold to Canadian retailers and brokers. Currently, as a result of market conditions the plant is running at about fifty percent capacity but that is expected to experience a dramatic change for the positive as the global home building market readjusts. The company is also seriously considering re-tooling, allowing them to access the burgeoning Asian market.

Krawiec T ree equipment

Service has the right for Sandy cleanup by Kristen M. Castrataro

Krawiec's team uses their log truck to clear an eighty-foot spruce felled by Superstorm Sandy. In this economy, running a small business successfully is quite an accomplishment. Mark Krawiec has done that and more. Mark owns and operates Krawiec Tree Service in Harmony, RI, which does everything from land clearing to urban tree removal. In addition, he has five land management corporations, most of which involve creating and renting business space. None of these successes would be possible however, if it were not for his fleet of tree removal equipment.

He says that having the right equipment has enabled him to take on almost any job and handle it efficiently and professionally. It also allows him to profit from each aspect of a job he undertakes. For example, stump grindings are turned into fertilizer. Wood chips can be colored and sold at Eastern Connecticut Recycling (ECR). Even the eighty-foot oak trees, in his own yard that came down during Superstorm Sandy proved beneficial. He cut and split every foot for firewood.

Large stumps are no problem for Krawiec's Morbark tub grinder.

During that storm, he had crews clearing downed trees in southern Rhode Island. Within hours, they were able to remove storm damaged trees, cutting and chipping the downed trees, using their Bandit 200 chipper. Some of the trees that needed to be removed were what was left of his eighty-foot spruces. Over the years, Krawiec has worked on a wide variety of projects. Along the way, he has acquired specialized equipment to facilitate the new jobs. His favorite piece of equipment is a two year old Altec crane, a unit with a 137-foot boom. It can pick up a load weighing 40 tons and lift it over obstacles that might hinder other models. He says his crew appreciates having it because it is fast, efficient and makes their work easier. Krawiec likes it because it allows him to take urban and suburban jobs where there is limited or no access to the actual work site. He says he has removed trees from back yards without ever moving the crane from the front yard. Another instance where having the right equipment for the job paid off, was in 2009. Krawiec was contracted to create a wildlife habitat at Joslin Farm in Scituate, RI, a property under the management of Providence Water. Using his company’s TimberJack 530 Delimber, Krawiec’s crew cleared seventy acres of mature forest making the way for native grassland and early successional species, to thrive. He says that at the time of this project, diesel fuel had jumped to around $5 a gallon. As a way to help absorb some of that overhead expense, Krawiec was able to sell every bit of wood they harvested as cordwood. They turned the wood chips into mulch, which also provided them with additional revenue. Along with direct contracts with private landowners and municipalities, Krawiec subcontracts out to

larger projects as well. He has worked on bridge and highway projects, state contracts and FEMA jobs. Krawiec says that finding the right equipment can be a time consuming process. There is a dearth of large equipment dealers in southern New England, so he usually begins his search on the internet. He says that he finds that since some of the “local” dealers are located up to 200 miles away, it is often cheaper to ship a piece from across the country than it is to pick up a “local” piece. When he finds a piece he likes, he does what it takes to acquire it. For example, before purchasing his Bandit 1850 Track Chipper, he flew out to Michigan. There, he toured both the Bandit and Morbark facilities. When he found the unit at the price that he liked, he bought it. There are times, however, when his equipment purchases are nothing short of serendipitous. One day he was at ECR and ran into a colleague who was retiring and looking to unload a Morbark chipper with hydraulic winch. The chipper’s 24 x 30-inch opening allows it take entire tree tops. Since the seller was an over the road trucker, it took Krawiec three months to finalize the deal. Just the same, he thinks it was worth the wait. As important as the right equipment is, it is not the sole secret to Krawiec’s success. He is a firm believer in customer service. “We want to leave them happy,” he says. “The first step in accomplishing that goal is hiring the right people.” When it comes to bidding a job, Krawiec likes to use good judgement. If he’s going to lose money on a job, he refuses it, whether that means turning down a private landowner, a commercial renter, or a state job. Many businesses go under despite the fact that they are always “busy;” Krawiec doesn’t want to be one of them. Once he does take a job, he takes customer service very seriously. He personally shows up at every job, managing the communication between the customer and his crew. Krawiec believes that his clients choose Krawiec Tree Service because they know they will get the “job done right.” Doing the job right includes respecting the property. Krawiec’s crews use mats and plywood on lawns to prevent damage from the equipment. As one employee says, “When we pull out, you don’t even know we were there.” That fastidiousness pays off. Clients regularly invite the crews in for coffee, donuts and an old fashioned visit. And his customers pay the greatest compliment: they call him back for repeat work. The majority of Krawiec’s jobs are either previous customers with more jobs or new customers referred by previous customers.

Marc Krawiec examines his Bandit 200 chipper. A “new venture” Krawiec’s original passion for tree work started in high school, and it hit its full stride in the 70’s when he started clearing land to build his first home. In 1992, he bought his first log truck, which he still uses every day. It was then that he started his own business. Eight years ago Krawiec began the first of his five land management corporations. With the return on most investments in this economy at a low level, Krawiec saw land management as an opportunity with a potentially high return. Krawiec handles all aspects of his land management corporations from clearing and building many of the plazas to selecting renters and negotiating leases. The success of this segment of his operation has come at a good time because the slow economy has begun affecting Krawiec’s Tree Service. This past year, was the first year Krawiec can remember not working straight up until Christmas. Despite these challenges, Krawiec is confident in his business plan. He credits his diversification with keeping him solvent in this economic climate and looks forward to better times. It is easy to share his optimism. trucks, we have gone to a ‘just in time’ inventory and delivery system which makes life a lot more simple for our customers.” Reid went on to explain that NorSask’s ownership is somewhat unique in the Canadian sawmill and

lumber business. “We are 100 percent owned by the Meadow Lake Tribal Council, a consortium of nine First Nations. It is very important to our owners to keep our staff of over sixty employees gainfully employed

and to provide the Tribal Council with a positive return on investment. Our loyal employees and Volvo have helped us do that… just look at what our Volvo wheel loaders have done for us. Almost 30,000 hours on the me-

ter of each machine, with virtually no downtime… I wish I could make that same statement about some of our other (branded) heavy -equipment.” Secret? Asked what his secret is to be able to get such positive, high hour endurance from the company’s two Volvo wheel loaders, Chuck Brander was quick to respond. “We hire good operators and simply follow Volvo’s recommended maintenance schedule. We change the oil and filters along with all coolant elements every two hundred and fifty hours and all fuel, transmission and hydraulic filters every five hundred hours. The only time we depart from Volvo’s recommended maintenance schedule is in the winter. It can be minus 40 Fahrenheit for days here in the winter and we will change to a synthetic oil and grease package then. Other than that, we just follow Volvo’s operator and maintenance schedule.” Good neighbors Just across the road, NorSask’s neighbor and wood chip customer,

Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp owns a Volvo L150E wheel loader. “Our loader easily handles 250,000 tons of bark, chips, sludge and grit annually,” states Dwayne Mysko, Wood Room resource leader. “Our operators work our loaders pretty hard, but we were able to get over 25,000 hours and 135,000 kilometers from our 150 before we had engine concerns. Even at that, when it was in our shop we checked all the brakes, transmission, differentials… the works, and everything was still just like new. Maintenance wise Volvo has been a good machine for us. History recap So let’s do a little recap of Volvo Construction Equipment’s history in Saskatchewan. NJ recycler produces more for less, in less space, with new SENNEBOGEN 830

After shopping the new and used equipment market, Beacon's Clyde Cameron III found that the SENNEBOGEN 830 R-HD offered the best balance of price and value in tracked machines for his two scrap facilities in Newark, NJ. SOUTH AMBOY, NJ — A quick scan around the recycling yard in South Amboy, NJ, tells you that Clyde Cameron is a value conscious equipment buyer. Here, at one of the two Beacon Scrap Iron & Metal facilities south of Newark, NJ, the fleet covers a wide mix of varied equipment makes, models and vintages. Against this setting, a brand new 830 R-HD scrap handler in fresh SENNEBOGEN green stands out. Clyde Cameron III takes the lead in equipment purchases for his family’s 40 year old business. He explains, “It seems the only thing you can’t buy used these days is a good material handler on tracks. They are rare, people normally use them until they are no good. There are lots of wheeled machines around, but everything we saw on tracks had too many hours for the price. When we compared the cost of a new SENNEBOGEN, it really split the difference between a used machine and the new cost from other manufacturers.” Purpose built saves costs Cameron often works closely with Dominick Vecchiarelli of Binder Machinery when he’s sourcing equipment. Binder is the SENNEBOGEN distributor in the region, and Vecchiarelli believes that the purpose built design of the green machines makes them the more cost efficient choice for Beacon’s operation. “When you convert an excavator into a material handler, even at the factory, there’s an added expense. It’s expensive to begin with and then it’s expensive in fuel. SENNEBOGEN machines are made for this job. You aren’t paying for a dirt machine, then paying to make it do something else.” Cameron says, when he began looking at new machines, he was immediately attracted to SENNEBOGEN’s purpose built features. “All the same

Representing the third generation for the family owned Beacon Scrap Iron & Metal, Clyde Cameron III, left, is joined by his grandfather, William Smith Sr., the founder of the company

size class machines that I saw were around 20 percent higher in cost,” he reports, “and they still couldn’t do the same job. Not only did we get a better machine, we got it for a better price!” Running a tight operation The engineering of the 830 R-HD helped Clyde deal with being squeezed on space as well as being squeezed on costs. Between the South Amboy facility and the firm’s other location in nearby Freehold, NJ, Beacon Scrap Iron & Metal processes in excess of 5000 tons of ferrous and over a million pounds of non-ferrous per month. In June this year, the South Amboy yard was holding a lot of 15,000 ton of ferrous in reserve stock, waiting for the market to offer more favorable pricing. On top of that, traffic lanes were busy with a steady stream of residential and light commercial scrap. Furthermore, Beacon maintains hundreds of roll off boxes throughout its service area, and can receive between 400 and 500 customers in total every day between both locations. The two yards, which also share the use of a fully portable shear/baler/logger, are each situated on just four acres. In this space, they need to accommodate processing, stockpiling and loading. Today, both sites now rely on an 830 R-HD for loading trailers and feeding the shear. “We especially like the SENNEBOGEN units’ ability to operate close-in,” says Cameron. “Some of our older cranes had three piece booms for tight quarters, but they are hard to find anymore. When we have a big pile like we do now, we have to load 15 to 25 trucks a day. The 830 has a two piece boom and stick that can load close in and it has good reach for its size. It also lifts the same weight over all sides so

Welcoming the arrival of Beacon's new SENNEBOGEN 830 R-HD are (L-R) Dominick Vecchiarelli, sales manager at Binder Machinery, Clyde Cameron III, William Smith Sr. and Jim Gill, Binder Machinery's specialist in scrap processing equipment. there is less need for it to move around.” A family affair Deciding on the new SENNEBOGEN machines was a carefully considered purchase for the family business. Clyde Cameron represents the third generation of the family to take part in managing Beacon’s business. His father, also named Clyde, and his grandfather William Smith Sr., Beacon’s founder, were also involved in different stages of the purchase decision. “I was put in charge of Research & Development for all our new equipment — though I do more research than development!” he admits. Active in the company for the past 11 years, he has served time operating every piece of machinery in the fleet. He still spends time operating machinery in the yard, but also works with equipment suppliers to plan the company’s next moves. “I’m looking at a few new pieces to add. Next we will probably need a second guillotine shear, for increased capacity.” Hands-on inspection When Cameron began to zero-in on the 830 R-HD, he visited another recycler in Staten Island to see its wheeled counterpart on the job. He was accompanied there by his father, who leads the servicing of the Beacon fleet. After taking turns operating the machine, both men were impressed. “We knew they were good machines, because every yard has them and you never hear any complaints,” says the younger man. “At the demo, my father could see how well built they are and how easy they would be to maintain — everything is right there for you for servicing. Having ‘no computers’ on board helps, too!” The family also gave consideration to the larger SENNEBOGEN 835 R-HD scrap handler but Cameron’s grandfather, who remains active in the

company, agreed that the smaller unit met the price/value equation for their operation. Cameron observed that “…it’s a 90,000-pound machine that outlifts, outreaches and moves faster than the 120,000-pound machines they replaced… it does a lot for its size!” The pair of 830 R-HD machines they purchased from Binder are fitted with one-yard Rotobec four tine grapples and with 30-inch Winkle scrap magnets used for cleanup duties. The purchase also included a 60-inch Winkle magnet used for loading selected ferrous and irony aluminum materials. “We’re also one of the top 10 aluminum buyers in this area,” Cameron notes. The value of trust Dominick Vecchiarelli has been Binder’s representative for 14 of the 20 plus years that the distributor has been supplying equipment to Beacon. He has known Clyde Cameron since Clyde was eight years old. Cameron recalls, “I always asked every salesman for equipment brochures, but Dominick was the only one who brought me some!” Binder also supplies Komatsu machinery and a wide variety of attachments as well as much of the used equipment in Beacon’s fleet. “Even if Binder doesn’t have the type of equipment I need, I know Dominick will help me find it.” After working with Cameron on the selection of the SENNEBOGEN machines, Vecchiarelli is quite complimentary of Cameron’s purchasing process. “Clyde’s questions about the equipment are those of an experienced operator and an experienced buyer. He has lived and worked around this machinery since he was just a child, and the things he asks me can be just amazing.” The trust between the two was an

important factor in Cameron’s decision to go with the new SENNEBOGEN scrap handlers instead of other equipment brands. After running the 830 R-HD machines for several months, Cameron and his family are pleased with their decision. As Cameron reports, “When we were using our 320 Cats with demo grapples to load light iron or #1 steel, it took about an hour to load a truck. Now, I’m timing it out at about 10 to 15 minutes for a load of steel. The 830s are a lot more fuel efficient than our previous cranes, too. We’ve been able to accomplish a lot more in less time, for less cost!” SENNEBOGEN has been a leading name in the global material handling industry for over 60 years. Based in Stanley, North Carolina, within the greater Charlotte region, SENNEBOGEN LLC offers a complete range of purpose built machines to suit virtually any material handling application. Established in America in the year 2000, SENNEBOGEN LLC has quickly become a leading provider of specialized equipment solutions for recycling and scrap metal yards, barge and port operations, log handling, transfer stations and waste facilities from coast to coast. A growing network of distributors supports SENNEBOGEN LLC sales and service across the Americas, ensuring the highest standard of professional machine support and parts availability. 27th Annual Hard Hat Expo is on tap for March 6-7 by Jon M. Casey

Contractors and representatives from municipalities from all over upstate New York and portions of New England are making plans to attend the New York Hard Hat Expo 2013 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, March 6-7. Last year, with the weather being unseasonably warm and sunny, approximately 8,500 visitors kept exhibitors busy throughout the entire event. Companies like Caterpillar, John Deere, Case, New Holland, Komatsu, Kobelco, PowerScreen, J.C.B. and others were among those on hand for the show! This year will be better yet! For example, not only will competitors be able to participate in a Skid Steer Rodeo, but a Backhoe Rodeo is planned this year, as well! Make your plans to attend, today. “We had a near record crowd,” said Trade Show Manager, Ken Maring, following last year’s show. “The beautiful weather made it much easier for people to attend. Some years, winter weather is still very much a factor during the show. We were happy to see our show goers enjoying themselves the way that they did last year. We trust that this year will be no different.” Since 1988, the New York Hard Hat Expo has been the premier showcase for construction equipment and services in the Northeast market area. Over the years, the Hard Hat Expo has continued to grow because of its quality exhibitors and the addition of new events for attendees. The Expo located at the NY Fairgrounds in Syracuse since its inception, has grown to fill both the Horticulture Building and the Center of Progress Building, the main exhibit hall for the event. Additionally, outdoor exhibits line the street in front of the Center of Progress Building, where a closed off area designated for this purpose during the two day event. Similarly, the Skid Steer Rodeo, a favorite of vendors and attendees alike, is conducted outdoors as well. Maring said that he wanted to thank all the past exhibitors and attendees for making the New York Hard Hat Expo a successful experience for everyone. “We couldn’t have done this without all of you! We are looking forward to seeing you there, this year!” The Expo runs Wednesday, March 6: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Thursday, March 7: 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Admission is free to qualified industry buyers. Tickets are available at your local construction equipment dealership in New York or e-mail your request to mwhite@leepub.com. For additional information on the 2013 Hard Hat Expo, contact the Trade Show Division of Lee Newspapers, Inc. at 800-218-5586 or online at www.leepub.com.

At last year's New York Hard Hat Expo, Kip Walsh (R) talked with a shopper about the benefits of owning a Club Car CARRYALL 6. The Hard Hat Expo main entrance is where the adventure begins!

A steady stream of people visited the Lee Publications exhibit where Brittany Clapper (L) and Josh Maring (second from left) welcomed them to the Hard Hat Expo.

Clinton Tractor's exhibit in the Horticulture building, was a busy place.

A steady stream of people did not allow much opportunity for a break. Here, staff members at the Tracey Road exhibit take a moment to replenish supplies.

The Skid Steer Rodeo at the 2013 New York Hard Hat Expo is one of two hands-on events planned for this year's event. A Backhoe Rodeo is also in the planning.

Hey Fred We were right in the middle of researching new construction accounting software packages when a fellow contractor asked us if we were going on-premise or SaaS, and I said, “What the heck is SaaS?!” Once I did my research, I realized that SaaS may be an option for us, too. What are the advantages of each? -Tina

Hey Tina That’s a great question, and I commend you on doing your research and exploring your options! There are plenty of advantages to using both on-premise software and a SaaS (which stands for Software as a Service) version of the software, so it really depends on what works best for your company. Let’s take a closer look at each.

contractors then have complete control over their hardware and their software, but they also fully own it, too. SaaS On the other hand, selecting a SaaS solution means that you’ll most likely pay on a subscription based method. Nothing is installed on your personal computers… instead, you have access to the software application through a web browser. This is a great option for small contractors who may not necessarily have the IT infrastructure or resources in place to run software on-premise, plus it eliminates the

Hey Fred

On Premise When you choose onpremise software, you are typically buying the software. Most companies who choose this option have the IT infrastructure and resources in place to run the software internally on their own computers. This means having computers, servers, a network and sometimes even a tech person or department to make sure that everything is running smoothly. Once the software is paid off, most companies typically then pay an annual maintenance fee that covers updates and phone support each year. Not only do

Vermeer moving head design and air-on reverse help enhance production Distributed by independent, authorized Vermeer dealers PELLA, IOWA — Vermeer introduces three new products to its pneumatic piercing tool lineup. The Vermeer Hole Hammer pneumatic piercing tool is a powerful and economical solution that can operate in a full range of soil conditions and applications, plus in-

novative features provide exceptional control and easy startup. A moving head design provides full striking force of the piston to the head of the tool pulverizing stones into the surrounding soil. The residual energy generated is used to help the tool body travel through the compacted bore path. This results in more accuracy in

tough soil conditions and reduced tool deflection. It also incorporates a mechanical reset for the head assembly, helping ensure each blow delivered compacts soil in front of the tool to increase production and accuracy. Because Hole Hammer tools feature a mechanical spring reset design, the head fits tightly to the body of the

tool, resulting in an easy and smooth starting tool. A ribbed tool body provides additional tool grip for traction in loose soils, helping achieve forward impact on each blow. This provides for maximum tool power, strong forward thrust and reduced tool swimming for more accurate bores. Inside the body tube are precision fitted components that re-

Two head assembly designs are offered, helping increase versatility within a single tool purchase. Contractors can purchase one tool and change the head — standard replaceable or moving head assembly — as they move among varying ground conditions. The

standard replaceable head is used in conditions where production of 1-foot per minute is observed. In rocky soil conditions or when production appears to be diminishing, the contractor can install the moving head assembly to achieve better production and improved accuracy.

Tilt-up Concrete Association releases new temporary Wind Bracing Guideline MT. VERNON, IOWA — The Tilt-Up Concrete Association — an international nonprofit organization that serves to expand and improve the use of Tilt-Up as the preferred building system — has announced the release of a revised guideline on Temporary Wind Bracing of Tilt-Up Concrete Panels During Construction. According to Jim Baty, technical director of the TCA, the guideline is intended to provide a standardized method for the design and erection of a temporary bracing system for use during construction of a Tilt-Up structure. The current OSHA requirement requires that Tilt-Up concrete panels be temporarily braced to prevent panels from overturning or collapsing during the construction of a Tilt-Up structure. Since OSHA does not specify how to prevent Tilt-Up wall panels from overturning or collapsing, the TCA developed a temporary bracing guideline for use by the construction industry. “The 2012 edition of the TCA Wind Bracing Guidelines is a combination of technological progress in this industry and reassurance for the performance of these systems,” said Baty. Baty noted that the industry was challenged when ASCE 37 identified it would change to adopt ASCE 7 pressures as it established the concern that bracing schemes may be under designed for the resulting wind conditions. However, he noted, TCA’s engineering experts have been able to confirm that Tilt-Up bracing systems are sufficiently designed with today’s standards. “This confirmation permitted us to move forward with recommendations for response design recommendations on slab thickness and integrating helical ground anchor systems to this more robust version,” he said. The original TCA Bracing Guidelines, published in September 1994, suggested a temporary bracing design based on a minimum uniform lateral

wind pressure of 10 psf., applied over the entire panel area. This was based on a 40 year history of bracing panels that were for the most part, shorter than 30-feet tall. TCA revised the document in 1998 to incorporate the analytical procedures contained in ASCE Standard 7-95, Minimum Design Loads For Buildings And Other Structures. This ASCE standard forms the basis for calculation of wind forces used in the design of wind force resisting systems in completed structures. The wind load provisions of section 6.0, ASCE 7-95 were followed in the design of temporary bracing for Tilt-Up panels during construction. The application of ASCE 7-95 resulted in an applied lateral wind pressure that varies over and increases with the height of the panels. The 1998 guideline used a construction period wind speed of 70 mph as a minimum in the design of temporary bracing. This was based on a basic wind speed of 90 mph, with a fifty year mean recurrence interval and multiplying it by 0.78 to convert it to a construction period wind speed of 70 mph with a five year mean recurrence interval. This method also incorporated the three second gust speeds reported by the national weather service and other weather information services. In 2005, TCA revised its 1998 wind bracing guide to incorporate the provisions of SEI/ASCE 37-02, Design Loads On Structures During Construction. The SEI/ASCE 37-02 standard incorporates the design wind load requirements of the ASCE 7-95 standard, using a basic wind speed of 90 mph. For construction periods up to one year, the SEI/ASCE 37-02 standard specifies the use of an adjustment factor of 0.8 to be applied to the basic 90 mph wind speed. This adjustment results in a 72 mph construction period design wind speed, which is the wind speed recommended for design of the temporary bracing system.

The 2012 edition continues to base its design loadings on SEI/ASCE 37-02, however, the wind loadings are now based on ASCE 7-10 provisions. ASCE 37-02 will adopt the ASCE 7-10 wind provisions in the next revision to the publication. In addition, it is very likely that many, if not all local building codes, will endorse ASCE 7-10 in the near future. As such, the TCA decided to endorse

ASCE 7-10 as the standard for temporary bracing of Tilt panels during construction. The major changes to wind load provision of ASCE 7-10 include: • Introduction of new wind speed maps to be used with a 1.0 load factor for LRFD design; • A 0.6 load reduction factor for ASD design; and • Re-introduction of Exposure D in hurricane prone regions

To purchase your copy of the new Guideline, visit www.tilt-up.org/resources. Considering the environmental impact and declining use of printed material, this publication is available solely in its digital form. TCA was founded in 1986 to improve the quality and acceptance of site cast Tilt-Up construction, a construction method in which concrete wall panels are cast onsite and

tilted into place. Tilt-Up construction is one of the fastest growing industries, combining the advantages of reasonable cost with low maintenance, durability, speed of construction and minimal capital investment.
