by Laura Rodley Lily Thompson fits right in with all the other tradesmen working at her current jobsite. Lily is busy working on a project at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst as a journeyman carpenter and union member. The $145 million project is a 140,000-square-foot, New Laboratory Science Building (NLSB), due for completion by the end of 2012. Most of the time, she is the only woman on a

worksite, however, this summer, that has changed. On this job, each of four trade groups is represented by a female tradesperson. The reason for the increase is that UMass is requiring female workers at this site. During her past ten years as carpenter, she has met most of her counterparts. “I’ve never been on the site where there is more than one woman worker,” said Lily,

Lily Thompson on the job a union journeyman, for the last six years. “Usually, I fill the minority quotient wherever I go. There are only four women carpenters in all of Western MA” she added. “There are also a half dozen female electricians, and I have worked with them all before. At this project, there are several new faces. The women have come from Connecticut, Rhode Island, Eastern MA,” she said. On this project, Lily’s Sawing 3-5/8-inch metal stud material is a part of this project.

Lily pads a corner wall with sheetrock. work includes installing metal stud framing and drywall for Springfield based, Professional Drywall Construction. She does the work through Springfield’s Carpenters Local 108. When the job began four months ago, it started with 200 workers, which included approximately eight females. Today, the total number has dropped to 150 workers, however the number or women remains about the same. Nevertheless, Lily knows them all. Lindsay Gustafson, apprentice licensed

plumber from Chicopee’s Local Union 104, said that in six years she has worked in her the trade she has never worked with any other females. Usually, it is all about percentages. Rock Shainke, a New Hampshire resident and Lily’s crew boss on this job, said that at this site, the one that is funding this job (Division of Capital Asset Management), makes sure the ratio is 6.7 percent women. The minority is 15 percent,” he said. Painter John Ferrante of Rhode Island based

Lily from 3 Century Drywall, agreed. “If you go into the city, percentages go way up. There’s way more women in Boston; ten percent women, 30 percent minority, 50 percent residents.” Shainke said that in his thirty years as a crew boss, overseeing the work of three women on one jobsite is unusual. Here, he manages three, a carpenter, a taper and a laborer. Normally, he works on the other side of Massachusetts. He said that at the Data Center job in Holyoke, MA, closer to the UM project, laborer Nancy Stroh from Arden Plumbers was the only woman worker of the 100 workers on site. Thompson has worked for Shainke at different sites for more than six years. He said that her size is an asset because, “She can get into all the tight spaces.” “She’s a good worker,”

added Shainke. “I only have to give her instructions once and she takes care of it.” The most recent example where that was helpful was where she installed the ceiling drywall and edge walls of a teninch wide, circular space inside a circular exterior wall bracket. It was twenty feet off the ground. “My hard hat didn’t fit,” Lily recalled. “I had to duck down under the opening, turn my head the other way, and look up to screw the next stud in place.” Working Mom Thompson learned her trade at Franklin County Technical School in Montague, graduating in 2001. At the time, she was featured as outstanding senior on Sy Becker’s television show. Lily represented her school in VICA, now Skills USA. At the start of her ca-

reer, Lily considered crafting high end cabinetry but ended up in big construction soon after graduating. “I sort of fell into it,” she said. “I had tried the computer end of things. I did shop drawing, fabricating and installing products that I had drawn.” However, when the company she worked for went under in 2002 as the economy floundered, construction was the primary trade was available at the time. Around that time, she married Olan Thompson, owner of Olan Thompson Repair. Recently, she was unemployed for a time, while she had her

baby, Ettalynn, now a year old. Lily returned to work when Ettalynn was three months. As far as Lily can recall, she is the only woman carpenter that has a young baby and works full time. “Most of the women I know have older kids, or none,” she said recently after work while she offered Ettalynn some yogurt at their Plainfield, MA home. Back at the jobsite, Lily is busy working on a change order. “In my experience the design is a continuously changing ball of wax. That’s what keeps us busy.”

This Sypder is not a Halloween trick! by Jon M. Casey

Nick Waite arrives at a jobsite near the Peace Bridge Administration Building, with the Spyder Crane loaded onto At this “Halloween time of year” (or any other time available today. Weighing in at a little over 4,000-pounds, this track for that matter), contractors who are looking for ways to turn tricky situations into a real treat, can look to mounted portable crane is able to walk safely across Clark Rigging & Rental Corp. of Lockport, NY for one sidewalks or grass, leaving barely a footprint because of their SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler, tracked of its 500 psi weight distribution. With the ability to compact crane units, to help solve some of those extend its retractable legs into whatever configuradifficult lifting problems that come with many of tion is convenient for the job location, the Spyder is today’s challenging projects. According to Clark able to work on uneven, difficult terrain as well. That Rigging & Rentals, the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler includes confined areas indoors, where going up or is one of the more innovative and compact cranes down stairs might need to be a consideration. More

Easily maneuverable, the Spyder Crane has “crawled” into place between a wall and fountain on this job.

a small utility trailer pulled by a small flatbed truck. importantly, it can be driven into freight elevators and taken to indoor areas where precise, heavy lifting is the job of the day. Michael Kolaga, Ironworker Foreman for Niagara Erecting a division of Clark Rigging & Rental Corp. says that he loves to work with Spyders (SPYDERCRANE mini-crawlers that is!). He tells his clients, “I have a crane that I can setup in your office and it will answer the phone.” Mike might be stretching one of the Spyder’s four, retractable outriggers a bit, but without a doubt, the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler is a very handy tool when it comes to tight situations. Spyder Specs. The SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler is 24-inches wide, weighs a little over two tons. It is able to spread its floor load to 500-pounds per square foot. because of its tracked power system. This allows the machine to move across areas where heavier equipment is not able to pass. With its five section boom that can fully extend up to 28-foot in length, the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler offers 52 different working positions within its full operational range. Since the operator controls the Spyder with a wireless remote control that can be operated one handed, the operator has unlimited vision for added safety and convenience. Clark Rigging & Rental Corp. operator, Randy Gath, says, “This crane can actually save the customer money because it eliminates the need for a signalman in most cases.” Recently, Ajay Glass and Mirror, Inc. of Rochester, NY called upon Clark Rigging & Rental Corp. to provide equipment for a window glass installation project at the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.). Project Manager Dave Muth, said that the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler was the most versatile and economical solution for this type of work that he had ever experienced. Muth observed that based on his experience, the cost of the SPYDERCRANE minicrawler rental for one week was the equivalent to the

rental and operator costs of a conventional small crane, for one day’s use. More importantly, the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler is able to move around areas both indoors and out, in places where other machines would not be able to access. He said that the unit’s remote control features made the operator’s training quick and easy. With the Spyder at the jobsite, the operator was able to move around outside the unit, unlike conventional cranes with enclosed cabs. By having this advantage, the operator was able to have the best vantage point possible when viewing the work in progress. Muth added that because he was able to have a tool like the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler on the job, he was able to reduce his work force needs by two for this particular job. Steve Clark, vice president for Clark Rigging & Rental Corp. said he was extremely pleased with the outcome of Ajay Glass and Mirror’s experience with the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler. “We have received many written compliments about our employees and crane fleet, but the response from Ajay Glass and Mirror was by far the most glowing reaction to our fleet of specialized cranes. It’s satisfying when we receive this type of feedback,” he said. “(It helps us to realize) that our investments in unusual equipment (like the SPYDERCRANE mini-crawler), is worthwhile.” Clark noted that Ajay Glass rented the model VRW295 mini-crawler crane “bare” for eleven weeks with the project being on a very tight schedule. He said that just as it had performed for other contractors in the past, “It did the trick for this job as well.” “The Spyder can eliminate the need for scaffolding, ladders, chain falls and other equipment that is often needed for elevated work,” he said. “Using the Spyder increases safety and productivity on these difficult jobs. This machine can be a game changer for lifting and rigging in a variety of applications.” For more information, contact them at 716-433-4600 or 716695-4860 or via e-mail at Dave.Clark@Clarkrigging.com.

Workers for Ajay Glass put windows into place with the Spyder lifting the glass into place from outside.

Both compact and agile, the Spyder is able to traverse uneven terrain, even a short stairway like this one. With a 500 psi “footprint,” the unit is able to go places much larger equipment cannot.

At two feet wide, 4-feet tall, and just over 9-feet long, this compact unit is not much larger than a washer/dryer combination in its transport configuration.

Brokk from 5 extensive line of remote controlled, zero emissions, electric driven all-tool carriers, designed for use in a variety of industries including mining and tunneling, cement and metal processing, construction and demolition and nuclear, as well as other specialty applications. Its compact design allows the Brokk 100 to operate in restricted spaces. The low profile configuration, featuring a three piece boom design, is less than 4-feet high, and permits access into smaller openings, while the lower center of gravity provides greater stability. The machine’s improved driving capabilities mean that it can operate in the most challenging jobsites.

Though the overall design is compact, power and reach have not been sacrificed. A new load sensing hydraulic system with improved hydraulic capacity helps generate unparalleled breaking power when paired with the included Atlas Copco SB152 breaker. Maximum horizontal reach is 12.1-feet, while vertical reach is 14.1-feet. Building on its more than 30 years of experience in the engineering and manufacturing of demolition robots, Brokk designed the new Brokk 100 with the same proven abilities to take on even the most challenging limited access projects, while also including advancements to

the machine’s design and components. The new machine is the first in the industry to deliver the flexibility of true 360 degree working performance, without compromising stability, produc-

tivity or reliability. Electric driven machines are a great choice for confined tunnel activity. The Brokk 100 is powered by a 32 amp, 20 hp electric motor, allowing safe, emis-

sions free operation. Excluding attachments, the Brokk 100 weights in at 2,183-pounds. Recommended maximum weight of attachments such as beam manipulators, breakers, crushers, drills

and shears is 331pounds. The unit features a height of only 3.8-feet and width of just 2.6-feet. Additional improvements and features in-

Hydraulic excavator safety is focus — Reaching more equipment operators is goal The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) has published its first safety manual e-book to enable equipment operators to conveniently access safety information wherever they carry their mobile devices. This first AEM ebook is an electronic version of the association’s popular Hydraulic Excavator Safety Manual. AEM developed the e-book safety manual in response to industry requests. It is not meant to replace print but provides another avenue to reach equipment operators and help them practice safety on the jobsite. The AEM hydraulic excavator safety e-book features user friendly options such as variable type, bookmarks, the ability to embed and e-mail notes, content searching and a low light reading format. The e-book format also allows AEM to more easily distribute safety information globally and extend the reach of its safety messaging.

The AEM hydraulic excavator safety e-book (English only) is available as an iBook on Apple’s iBookstore. AEM plans to add more manuals to the iBookstore, as well as expand into other e-book platforms to increase availability. To order the electronic version of the AEM Hydraulic Excavator Safety Manual, first install iTunes on your Mac or PC if you do not already have it. Once you have iTunes installed, you can find the Hydraulic Excavator Safety Manual here. For print versions of the AEM Hydraulic Excavator Safety Manual and all AEM safety manuals and materials, visit the online AEM Store at http://shop.aem.org AEM safety manuals: Clear and concise information All AEM safety manuals outline typical worksite and equipment hazards as well as safe practices in equipment preparation, operation, maintenance and transport. The guidelines are presented in a concise and well illustrated layout for easy comprehension. (AEM

safety manuals are not a substitute for manufacturer manuals.) AEM safety and training materials cover more than 40 types of equipment used in agricultural, construction, forestry and utility applications. All manuals, videos and related safety and

training products are available online through the AEM Store at http://shop.aem.org. Some safety materials are offered in downloadable files or in DVD format. AEM members receive discounts on select materials.

Western PA One Call Safety Day draws more than 1200 by Jon M. Casey

As the day begins, some of the 1200 plus attendees begin to gather at the Cranberry Twp. maintenance facility, an ideal location for this PA One Call event. For the more than 1200 construction industry members who attended the Western PA Safety Day hosted by Pennsylvania One Call (PA 811), the Cranberry Township Public Works Facility was a busy place on September 13. With more than 40 outdoor exhibits and more than 70 tabletop displays, attendees had ample opportunity to learn more about construction safety awareness, more importantly, safety when doing excavation work. PA 811, is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is “to prevent damage to underground facilities.” Their mission is to promote safety, and to provide an efficient and effective communications network among project owners, designers, excavators and facility owners. According to Dan Lucarelli, director, Marketing and Education for Pennsylvania One Call System, Inc., the PA Safety Day program has grown into one of the largest one day safety expositions in the U.S. These Safety Days provide traditional educational sessions as well as hands-on demonstrations at three locations in Pennsylvania. In May, the organization hosted the Eastern Safety Day at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, while the Central PA event was hosted at the York Expo Center in York, PA on

June 21. In all, more than 3,000 workers from across Pennsylvania were able to take advantage of these no cost presentations that are designed for their safety awareness. Lucarelli noted that the ticket to pipe demonstration entitled, “Know What’s Below” as well as demonstrations by suppliers and utilities, would give workers an opportunity to observe proper safety protocol when it comes to dealing with utilities and underground excavation. With the PA Urban Search & Rescue Team providing a late morning, live demonstration on how to safely extricate a victim from a simulated trench accident, visitors were able to see how long it takes to safely remove a person whose life is in jeopardy. At the mid-morning Keynote presentation by Cliff

Dan Lucarelli, PA One Call Marketing & Education Director welcomes more than 1200 attendees to the 2012 Western PA Safety Day.

Cliff Meidl, former Olympian and motivational speaker, tells of his experiences of recovering from a life threatening electrical shock while excavating underground wiring, as this year's keynote speaker.

Meidl, a former Olympic athlete who competed in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics, Meidl shared his near death experience that he experienced while doing construction work in a trench with a jackhammer, hitting underground high voltage lines that severely burned his legs, back and other parts of his body. Meidl described his recovery and rehabilitation process which overall, took nearly ten years. He explained how his therapy took him on a path that included outrigger canoeing and kayaking, the sport in which he ultimately competed in the Olympic Games. Not only was he one of the competitors, but at the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia, Meidl was voted Team USA flag bearer, leading the team into the stadium at the opening of the games. Meidl’s presentation, which included graphic photos of the damage done to his legs during the electrical encounter, depicted the challenges he faced to head toward recovery over time. With the prospect of having both legs amputated only hours away, Meidl’s parents found help from a noted plastic surgeon, Dr. Malcolm A. Lesavoy MD, F.A.C.S. Lesavoy was able to

PA OneCall from 10 come up with a first ever technique for moving leg muscle from Meidl’s calves into the voids on his knees, created by the electrical burns. This new procedure allowed skin grafts to begin taking effect after several failed attempts to begin the healing process. Ultimately, Meidl was able to walk again, though unable to pursue his heart’s desire of working in the construction industry. Today, Meidl follows his passion is to serve the industry by inspire others who are suffering hardship, are in despair, and who face challenges that appear to be insurmountable. Cliff’s visit to Safety Day was underwritten by Sunoco Pipeline, L.P. and Duquesne Light Company. Miedl also serves as a national One Calls of America spokesperson.

Contractors had the opportunity to test drive this mini-excavator.

Jim Verga uses locating equipment to find buried power lines.

Ken Keyton of Valk Manufacturing (L), talks with a visitor at the company's snow equipment tent.

Vermeer's Vactron units, also known as “Might Moles” offers contractors a portable, easy to use way of excavating buried utilities.

With the “victim” extracted from the simulated trench cave-in, the team prepares him for transport to a nearby medical clinic.

Duquesne Light's electric power line safety demonstration, attracted a large audience with each presentation.

Greg Krawchuk, 811 Liaison Representative, gives a presentation on the “Tolerance Zone.”

Hey Fred

Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software

Hey Fred My friend and fellow construction business owner keeps telling me that we should take advantage of Section 179 and upgrade our off-the-shelf accounting software. I thought Section 179 only dealt with equipment… Can you give me some details? - Edward Hey Edward This is the perfect time of year to start considering new accounting software-

especially because of the benefits of Section 179. Let’s start with the basics. The Section 179 Deduction is a tax break that allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of financed or leased equipment and off the shelf software that qualifies for the deduction within the specified limits. That covers a lot of area including accounting software. In fact, a few years ago the IRS specifically identified certain types of off the shelf software to be included in the provision for Section 179. For the 2012 tax year, the Deduction Limit is $139,000 and the Limit on Capital Purchases is $560,000. So businesses that purchase, finance, and/or lease less than $560,000 in new or used business equipment during the tax year 2012 should qualify for the Section 179 Deduction. If, however, a business is

unprofitable in 2012, and has no taxable income to use the deduction, that business can elect to use 50 percent Bonus Depreciation and carry forward to a year when the business is profitable. You can learn more about this at www.section179.org. The limits change each year and tax laws are constantly evolving without warning, so it’s important to do your research before taking advantage of Section 179. I suggest sitting down with your CPA or tax specialist to see what benefits your company may qualify for. Section 179 may be the perfect opportunity for you to take a step toward better accounting software — and a better way to run your business! Good luck! - Fred

Hoffman Equipment location achieves Encore Partner status PISCATAWAY, NJ – Hoffman Equipment’s Piscataway, NJ branch has been certified and added to the Manitowoc Crane Care EnCORE Partner program network. This branch is Hoffman Equipment’s second to obtain certification to remanufacture any of the Manitowoc family of crane brands, which include Manitowoc, Grove and National Crane; their first one is in Williamstown, NJ. With its corporate headquarters in Piscataway, Hoffman Equipment is a Manitowoc distributor and has been working with cranes since

1949. EnCORE Partner status allows Hoffman Equipment to remanufacture Grove and Manitowoc cranes to the original Manitowoc specifications, including all product updates. “We are honored to have been certified as an EnCORE Partner at this second location,” says Tim Watters, president at Hoffman Equipment. “It is a tribute to all of our technicians who have worked diligently to help us achieve this status.” “Our program provides customers a cost effec-

tive fleet management solution,” notes Gilberto Ferreira, global EnCORE general manager with Manitowoc Crane Care. “Remanufacturing significantly extends the life of the crane and, because it is done in close collaboration with Manitowoc, customers are assured of the quality and reliability of the repairs. In fact, Manitowoc fully certifies the load charts of the remanufactured crane after completion.” According to Ferreira, barring any major structural repairs, remanufac-

turing typically costs about 50 percent of the price of a new crane. “This process not only saves the customer money,” he added, “but it also extends the life of a crane that would otherwise be sold for scrap value.” The EnCORE Partner program is a network of certified dealers throughout North America, all of which have the ability to totally remanufacture cranes, as well as make major structural repairs. In the remanufacturing process, a crane is completely disassembled to

its frame and rebuilt with OEM remanufactured components. Manitowoc offers an extensive selection of remanufactured parts through its EnCORE program. All systems are updated, and new electrical harnesses, instruments, drivelines, hydraulic components, and hoses are installed. Two coats of fresh paint are applied, as well as new decals. Finally, all systems are tested to confirm that everything conforms to the latest OSHA guidelines. Hoffman Equipment is

one of only eight Manitowoc Crane dealers in the United States to have received EnCORE Partner status. To qualify for the EnCORE Partner program, Hoffman Equipment invested extensive time in training its technical staff, including advanced training for welders to earn the proper certifications for welding structural components on cranes. There must be a trained structural engineer on staff to interface directly with Manitowoc on technical issues.

All new Gehl compact excavators WEST BEND, WI — Gehl, a leader in compact equipment for agriculture and construction markets, is pleased to introduce an all new line of compact excavators to the North American market. The new Gehl Excavator range consists of five all new models; the Z17, Z27, Z35, Z45 and Z80. Each model is built around a powerful and reliable Yanmar engine; Tier IV on the Z17 and Interim Tier IV on the Z27,

Z35, Z45 and Z80. The hydraulic system is designed to enhance engine performance, resulting in a more efficient system. These models are true zero tail swing machines, eliminating cab overhang beyond the tracks in all directions. This allows the machine to operate directly against a wall or other obstruction without causing damage to the structure or machine. The hydraulic system incorporates two variable

Compact equipment has become invaluable for contractors by Jon M. Casey Today’s construction contractors know that projects can be completed more efficiently and economically, by using compact power equipment in place of conventional full sized equipment. One brand of compact equipment is the Ditch Witch ® lineup, a portion of which HHN had the opportunity to observe at the PA One Call Safety Day in Cranberry Township, PA. There, Ditch Witch exhibited several compact pieces including the SK650 Tool Carrier, the XT-855 Tool Carrier, the FX30 Vacuum Excavator

The FX 30 and other models in the Vacuum Excavator lineup are designed for use by utilities, municipalities, landscapers and other contractors involved in cleanup and soft excavation projects. Compact from 20 cluding directional drilling site cleanup, a Ditch Witch specialty. As mentioned previously, this writer observed a JT3020 Horizontal Drill in use on a utility project in suburban Pittsburgh. The JT3020 was outfitted with the optional, enclosed, climate controlled cab. It provides operator comfort and reduces jobsite noise as well. Highlighted in product literature, the JT3020 has a “patented pipe loading system… with hydraulically powered shuttle grippers, hydraulic pipe row selection and a single pipe loading feature.” The JT3020 is currently the largest of three models available. It offers an “industry exclusive double pivot drill frame allows steep entry angles without compromising machine stability while drilling.” Like many other compact equipment manufacturers, Ditch Witch offers a lineup of products that today’s contractors are finding more useful every day. Chris Ward joing New York Building Congress Board of Directors NEW YORK — Christopher O. Ward, a preeminent infrastructure executive with decades of success in spearheading multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects in both the public and private sectors, has joined the Board of Directors of the New York Building Congress, a coalition representing all facets of the city’s design, construction and real estate industry. Mr. Ward currently serves as executive vice president for Major Projects at Dragados USA, where he is responsible for development and oversight of projects in the U.S. and Canada, expansion of the company’s design-build and P3 markets, as well as Dragados USA’s entry into new energy and technology markets. Between 2008 and 2011, Mr. Ward was executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Under his

He was Commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection for the Bloomberg administration from 2002-20005. In this capacity, he led a staff of 6,500 people and managed a combined capital and operating budget of more than $2 billion. “Throughout my time in both the public and private sector, the New York Building Congress has served as a vocal

and credible advocate of strategic, long term investments in the region’s infrastructure,” said Mr. Ward. “I am proud to join Building Congress Chairman John Dionisio, President Richard Anderson and many other dedicated industry leaders as we seek ways to further strengthen the organization and positively shape the region’s future.” Building Congress Chairman John Dionisio said, “Chris Ward has developed a well deserved reputation as a vi-
