Additionally, the trailer is equipped with an optional Cleral onboard scale system that meets the toughest trucking industry requirements. Offering a 28-foot deck length, the 65 ton HRG is rated for 65 tons in any 14feet of deck length. It’s also adaptable to accommodate an additional 10-foot sec-

tion of deck, varying in type from beam to drop side. Loaded deck height is 22inches and the trailer features a 8-foot, 6-inch deck width. Engineered with heavy duty T -1, 100,000-PSI minimum yield steel construction, upper flange reinforcement on the deck and auxiliary cross members for extra support, the 65 ton HRG Trailer offers unmatched strength, reliability and longevity. Standard features include air ride suspension and connections for a PTO system, while an onboard power pack to operate its trailer hydraulic system, removable fenders over the tires and polished aluminum wheels are optional. Residential snow plowing at its best! by Jon M. Casey This year’s 15th Annual Snow & Ice Symposium, held in Buffalo, NY June 20-23, offered attendees dozens of seminars and workshops to help them improve their business practices and snow removal capabilities. One of these unique presentations was Paul Vanderzon’s overview of how his snow removal business operates, one that successfully focuses entirely upon residential customers. Vanderzon’s business, Amengagements Paysagers Vanderzon, Inc., has a client base of more than 3000 customers, homes in a four square mile area within his community of SaintBruno-de-Montarville, Quebec, Canada. Vanderzon said that he owns the operation along with his two brothers.

dential clients, Vanderzon said since his company focuses almost exclusively on residential clients. Accordingly, his company is able to take advantage of the economies of scale that come with that kind of target market. For example, they are able to choreograph a routine that when the snowfall depths reach a pre-planned, target depth, the plowing begins. This helps the equipment operators to work together successfully. By setting up routes for their crews, with zones that overlap, if the snow becomes heavy or some of the equipment has a problem, the teams can work together to help serve all the customers within the prescribed timeframe. Vanderzon said that his company has a fleet of Ag tractors, rather than the traditional truck and blade combination that many removal companies use. He said that the Ag tractors cost approximately $60,000 with blowers or plows, but they last an average of 15 years. This makes them a better value in the end. Since many of the tractors are outfitted with PTOs and snow blowers, they are not limited to pushing the snow with a blade. He said that their company only plows driveways and does not do sidewalks or other, more labor-intensive snow removal. With no slip and fall issues for his crews, safety takes a high priority when his workers go into action. Specializing his services in this

lenge is the municipal windrow piled up at the end of the customer’s driveways. “The municipal windrow brings us in the most clients (because of how difficult they can be to shovel),” he said. “It can also cause us extra work if we are ahead of the municipal plow during a snow event.” “Residential is an easy sell, once you have a client base established,” he noted. While they have 3200 clients, which would seem troubling when it comes to customer service, once the customers have been served for a few seasons, they begin to understand when and how the snow removal process works. He said the customers become trained to rely on his company without the typical questions that residential customers often have. Since residential clients have the choice to do the job themselves, it is important to give residential customers the quality of service that they can appreciate. Residential customers need to know that they are as important as any other customer is. He said his company has found that keeping the service area small is a key element to keeping his business successful. “We have a service area of approximately four square miles,” he said. “By keeping your business local and close by, there is little lost travel time for the tractors, to and from the customers. By having several houses on either side of a street in this small geographical area, the tractors can work quickly and efficiently. Our cycle time per event is four hours. That is the amount of time

that it takes a plow to do the first driveway until it does the last one on its route. We plan for each tractor to plow approximately 150 driveways per shift. If needed, we do a second plowing when the snow continues throughout the day. We also prefer to work behind the municipal snowplows whenever possible.” They set a “trigger” snowfall depth of three inches to start the snow removal, and a timetable finishing time, usually 7a.m. In this way, there is enough snow to plow, and the municipal plows

Right — As Paul Vanderzon's PowerPoint slide depicts, plowing the driveways of 3000 residential customers takes plenty of agile equipment like these Kubota and New Holland tractors. He relies on Ag tractors for their reliability, agility, longevity and reparability and because they are effective at working in tight, residential environments.

Satch Sales was started in 1970 by Tony Sangil of Mechanicville, NY. Kip purchased it in 1989 and moved to their present location in Menands, in 1995. Before purchasing Satch Sales, Kip worked in the banking industry first as a bank examiner and then as a vice president of the former State Bank of Albany. Being a golf car/utility vehicle distributor enables him to utilize his finance and administrative skills along with his mechanical experience to tackle the challenges of running a small business. “One of the challenges is to get prospective customer to consider a golf car vehicle instead of the more traditional piece of equipment to do the job. In many cases, a golf car can fill the customer’s need for a lot less money, and do a better job in the process,” Kip said. Golf cars/utility vehicles are so versatile that customer’s find many more uses for their vehicle then what it was originally purchased for. These vehicles include two passenger and multi-passenger (up to 16 seats) models and are available in electric or gas. The rough terrain models come in 4 wheel drive with diesel engines and hydraulic attachments. Many attachments can be found to fit your every need. Driver’ s V illage business fleet and commercial division is ready to serve by Jon M. Casey

The expanse of commercial vehicles at Burdick Chevrolet at Driver's Village, offers customers a wide selection of new and used vehicles. With the opening of the Burdick Chevrolet franchise at Driver’s Village in Cicero, NY, Chris Gerde and his team of commercial vehicle experts is now able to offer a “one stop” shopping experience for the contractor or commercial fleet operator who is looking to purchase a new or used vehicle. Previously announced in the June Hard Hat News (pg.14), the March 2012 opening of Drivers Village Business Fleet and Commercial Division at their new location, completed what is fast becoming a destination experience for vehicle shoppers, whether they be residential or commercial buyers. With this total package now available at one location, a new or used vehicle is now less challenging to purchase. “We are excited to be able to offer the lineup that we now have available,” said Gerde, Commercial Division manager, during a recent visit to Driver’s Village. “Not only do we offer several brands of automobiles for the family shopper, we have several lines of commercial vehicles for our business and fleet customers as well. More importantly, for businesses who are looking to purchase a truck or service vehicle, and plan to install custom graphics and custom outfitting to go with it, they no longer need to take their new vehicle to two or three other entities to get that work done. They can have it all done here. With one stop, they can make their purchase, and then come back when

the vehicle is ready to go. From here, they can head for the jobsite if they like.” Driver’s Village History Gerde explained that Glenn Burdick started the auto business in the 1960s. Glenn’s sons Roger, David and Jon, have continued on having been in the car business most of their lives. “Today, at this one location, together they offer a number of brands through 12 dealerships,” he said. “What makes Driver’s Village so special, is how all of these are gathered at one location. In this way, customers are able to head to one destination and shop for several brands of vehicle. It’s unique in that way.” Driver’s Village is the culmination of an idea that began several years ago when Roger Burdick envisioned taking the empty Penn-Can Mall and remodeling it in a grand way. His ultimate goal was to offer a mall of vehicle dealerships all in one convenient location. With the Penn-Can Mall having closed for business in the mid-1990s because of the newer, larger malls and box stores that had come into the area, the facility was already in place. It “simply” needed some remodeling and innovative design work to make it all happen. He has turned it into a vehicle enthusiast’s shopping destination. In 2002, the Burdicks broke ground. Workers detached portions of the facility and built a circular

In this way, customers would be able to drive from lot to lot and dealership to dealership as they wished. If shoppers prefer to go inside, they can park nearby and visit the many showrooms and other associated businesses that are tenants in the mall. This innovative design gives shoppers an enjoyable experience either to browse, or to get serious about making that buying decision. It’s their choice. Specializes in business and commercial Gerde said that over the years, Roger Burdick acquired the franchises for several dealerships including Nissan, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Lincoln. With each of those, there were commercial vehicle models available, but the commercial line was still lacking to some extent. With the acquisition of the Bresee Chevrolet franchise in March 2011, the availability of the Chevrolet and GMC commercial line of equipment helped to complete the Burdick Fleet and Commercial Division. “Now, with the Dodge/Ram, Jeep, Nissan and Chevy and GMC models, we have the products to meet the needs of contractors and fleet owners who need trucks in most popular sizes; from small to those in the medium duty, 4500 and 5500 series range,” he said. “We are the only dealer in the Central New York region designated by General Motors as a certified ‘Business Central’ operation.” Gerde said that his account representatives have numerous ways to serve the surrounding communities because they offer a number of vehicles that will

fill municipal needs. Additionally, in the commercial and business division, sales representatives are equipped to go out and to make calls on businesses or contractors to provide onsite vehicle demonstrations. “We are able to offer cab and chassis combinations for vehicles like school busses, fire vehicles and EMS equipment,” he said. “We are also able to offer police vehicles in both the Dodge and Chevrolet brands. These models are popular replacements for the older, larger vehicles that are still in service. More importantly, after the sale, we have a staff of trained service technicians who are ready to service the business and commercial line.” Driver’s Village is Located on Circle Drive in Cicero, NY near the crossroads of I-81 and I-481. RCC can make a big difference! by Stephen Wagner

With the prep work nearing completion, the RCC paving can begin. On June 25, 2012, the first public road in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to be paved with Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) as the primary pavement structure was on Sycamore Street in Upper Nazareth Township in front of the C.F. Martin Guitar factory. “It was a pie crust road,” said Sean Dooley, Ph.D. of Keystone Consulting Engineers. “It looked like a dry creek bed. There was about an inch and a half of

asphalt on top of a clay soil sub-base.” About 420-feet was to be repaved using RCC as the main pavement structure. “This segment of Sycamore Street had completely failed due to inadequate pavement strength,” Dooley noted. “We assessed various repair methods, including cold in place recycling (CIP); full depth reclamation (FDR); and full depth reconstruction using conventional asphalt pavement. CIP was found to be techni-

cally unfeasible because there was inadequate existing asphalt pavement thickness to work with. FDR was eliminated because it was found to be economically unfeasible for the relatively short length of road that needed to be reconstructed — FDR requires a substantial amount of process equipment that is costly to mobilize. This left us with the choice to go with conventional asphalt pavement or look for other alternatives.” That was when they looked at RCC as an alternative. The main difference between RCC and other pavements is that RCC is not reinforced. It does not require formwork or specialized equipment and it goes down with conventional asphalt paving equipment. In this way, there’s no large investment on the part of the contractor to adopt this technology. Additionally, the concrete is brought in by dump trucks, so there are savings over conventional reinforced concrete construction, which is considerably more expensive than asphalt construction or RCC. The RCC advantage over asphalt is that the material itself is cheaper. Because it does have a higher structural modulus, it is stiffer. It spreads the load over the soil sub-base more effectively than the more flexible asphalt. “So, for the same thickness of pavement,” says Dooley, “we have a stronger pavement with RCC. To put it another way, to achieve the same strength in my pavement I do not need as thick of a section as I need with asphalt. In this case, an equivalent asphalt section would be 16-1/2-inches thick, with the stone, the asphalt and the wearing course. In this case, that section is reduced to 10-1/2-inches, and we did include a wearing course on it for various reasons. Just the same, we still saved six inches of material that had to be excavated, removed from the site, with new material imported on site. It resulted in substantial savings in multiple levels of the construction.” In this instance, the use of RCC saved 30 percent over conventional asphalt paving. Typical savings are 15 to 20 percent as realized by a number of private

property owners in the Lehigh Valley Region over the past several years. RCC saves money over asphalt because concrete is currently about $40 per ton vs. $60 per ton for asphalt. More importantly, RCC pavement distributes the traffic load over the soil sub-grade better than asphalt. That means the RCC pavement section can be thinner than a comparable asphalt pavement section. Like paving with asphalt however, the RCC mix is delivered in dump trucks and positioned using conventional asphalt paving equipment. In this way, any paving contractor can train its crew to place RCC. Notably, RCC is different from asphalt in other ways, and needs to be placed under the aegis of an experienced supervisor. When asked about why more paving is not being done using RCC, Dooley offered his thoughts. He said that his doctoral thesis focused on Historical Development of Structural Materials and avers that engineering is inherently conservative. “There is always a liability, always a risk in adopting the new,” he said. “There’s the difficulty of convincing the people who have to pay for something untried or unproven. Asphalt has been around a lot longer, since the 1970s. The construction industry is very conservative and slow to adopt new materials. That’s just a fact. On this project, our impediment in the state of Pennsylvania was the fact that it is not approved by PennDOT.” RCC holds the potential to save municipalities substantial money — which will free up funds to do additional projects. Dooley speaks from experience when he says, “I know from our own perspective serving as municipal engineers to 27 municipalities that (Pennsylvania’s) road programs are severely underfunded — the condition of their infrastructure is degrading because there is not enough money to keep up. In Upper Nazareth Township we should be doing four miles of road surface treatments a year but we can only afford to do just over one mile.”

“RCC has been used quite a bit in the south but for the past decade, (but not nearly as much in the north). It has been used in Ohio; the city of Columbus and surrounding municipalities have been using it with success,” he continues. “It has also been used by the US military for tank roads in Colorado. It has been used even longer in Canada.” “The materials are being adopted by states like New Jersey and New York, states that you’d think would be bureaucratic nightmare states, but the Department of Transportation in Pennsylvania still won’t adopt them,” he said. “I think the process in PA is particularly onerous, expensive and long for the vendors and producers of products, which is prohibitive. In my mind, they’re hurting small business in PA by excluding products through a cost prohibitive process for getting approval. That hurts everybody. We’re forced to be less efficient because it closes off the number of options we have in our toolkit to address the severe infrastructure problems we have in conjunction with severely limited budgets we work with.” I asked Ken Crank, director of Concrete Promotion for the PA Aggregate and Concrete Association, if his organization is trying to shepherd this in the right direction. Crank says that “We are trying to do that. From our association’s point of view, we are advocating RCC as a product. Frankly, what the association sees is that it does potentially limit people who can do the project, because of the cost involved with some types of equipment. So, to the extent that we can shepherd anything with PennDOT right now — proposals are in the draft specification that has been just released and put out to the industry for comment.” A video for the Sycamore Street Reconstruction Project in Upper Nazareth Township can be found at www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cKfTB8x-tC0 and www.specifyconcrete.org.

A worker applies a tack coat in preparation for an asphalt overlay. The coating also serves as a curing agent.

Dr. Sean Dooley, of Keystone Consulting Engineers, knows that RCC can be an economical alternative to conventional paving materials.

Livengood Excavators, Inc. crewmembers discuss how this RCC paving has advantages over other kinds of material.

People at Play: The heavy equipment experience allows folks to “get dirty” operating machinery in a construction themed environment Ordinary people can now operate huge construction excavators, bulldozers and loaders for fun on Florida’s Gulf Coast at People at Play: The Heavy Equipment Experience. The name is a tongue in cheek reference to ‘Men at Work’ and the company was launched by construction industry veterans as a spin off business to generate additional revenue in Florida’s down economy. Participants learn to operate excavators which participating at People at Play. This is not your average attraction, it’s a one of a kind adventure where you can “play” on real excavators, bulldozers and loaders,” said Alisa S. Bennett, who is People at Play’s president

and self-appointed Hard Hat Diva. Many people are fascinated when driving by a construction site... they see a giant excavator digging in the dirt, a powerful bulldozer grading the land and wonder, “What is it like to operate one of those machines?” Now, a new Florida based company offers the opportunity to experience the “thrill” of operating heavy construction equipment firsthand; People at Play: The Heavy Equipment Experience is a new and exciting recreational offering. “We’re truly providing the ultimate outdoor “hands-on” construction experience in a

Hey Fred

Fred Ode, CEO/Chairman, Foundation Software

Hey Fred I own a construction firm, and I want to increase our productivity on jobs, but figuring out how our productivity takes hours — sometimes days — of manual calculation. Plus… how can we be sure that information is accurate? What can we do to better measure our productivity, and in turn, increase it? - Walter Hey Walter That’s a great question. You’ve got the right idea, but you’re right — measuring productivity (e.g. how many linear feet per man hour your workers are covering) is tough to do manually. There is a better way to measure your productivity — by using automated job cost accounting software. With an integrated accounting package, you can easily view production reporting using the information that you enter on a daily basis. There’s no need to enter data manually into a separate spreadsheet or worry about inaccuracies, and your data will be up to date based on each job. An integrated job costing system will allow you to track productivity more accurately, because labor costs are updated with every payroll run, material costs are updated with every invoice paid, and so on. All you need to do is enter or import quantities completed to receive instant and accurate production reporting. Production reports actually provide several advantages. Not only do they help you understand how your jobs are progressing, but you’ll also gain access to: 1. Realistic projected costs based on accurate production rates; and 2. Historical data, which leads to more precise estimating and perhaps more competitive bidding. Getting this type of production reporting manually, or with an outdated accounting system, is tedious and often inaccurate. If precise, detailed information is what you need, and job costing is important to you, then your best bet is to consider an integrated job cost accounting program. Best of luck to you! - Fred Call for Questions: Thank you for reading “Hey Fred!” CEO/chairman of Foundation Software, Fred Ode is here to answer any question you might have. Plus, he loves getting e-mails, so send a question to heyfred@foundationsoft.com, and he’ll get you an answer. Your question may even make the Hard Hat News website. Thanks!

People from 15 friendly themed environment, right down to the port-a-potties! This is not your average attraction, it’s a one of a kind adventure where you can “play” on real excavators, bulldozers and loaders.” People at Play is the brainchild of Jason and Alisa Bennett, owners of a site development construction company (Bennett Contracting, Inc.) based in Bradenton, FL. The Bennetts saw an opportunity to create revenue with a different kind of business in response to the weakened economy and declining construction starts. This “spin-off” business is the first of its kind in Florida and it capitalizes on Alisa’s background and experience in hospitality marketing, as well Jason’s construction background. “We all remember digging and moving the sand in our sandboxes. Before now, unless you were in the construction industry, you wouldn’t have the chance to harness the amazing power and strength of an excavator that weighs 10 times as much as an average car. Our experienced trainers ensure it’s a fun and thrilling adventure for anyone age 18 or over,” said Alisa S. Bennett, president. The entire experience is themed like a day on a construction site, where every participant has to “clock in,” wear a hard hat and a visibility vest. All participants are required to successfully complete a safety and equipment training orientation (in the job site trailer) prior to their time operating CAT excavators,

skid steer loaders and bulldozers. Individuals can “join the crew” at People at Play at one of different depending on how much time they want to spend operating the heavy equipment. Packages begin at $155 per person (plus tax) for a one hour experience on a Skid Steer Loader. Gift certificates are available for select programs. Participants must be aged 18 and over. Individuals must pre-register and book their packages based on scheduled “work” days. For reservations and information call 941-756-0886. In addition to the individual programs, People at Play can customize events and team building programs for corporate and social groups for up to 12 people. Packaging for groups include the mandatory orientation, personalized logo hard hats, machine operation and team relay events and box lunches. “There are unlimited possibilities in working with corporate groups,” said Bennett. Forget about golf outings or cooking classes this will be the new thing corporate groups will dig — literally,” laughed Bennett. People at Play: The Heavy Equipment Experience is a new recreational offering where individuals with no experience can operate real construction equipment in a fun “construction themed” environment. by Jon M. Casey Work efforts on the Center Fountain and Water Tower renovation project at the University at Albany, State University of New York campus, is progressing nicely according to project manager, Mitchell Sisson. As you can see in these recent photos, the work that began earlier this year, shows that the water tower is undergoing the necessary refurbishing while the courtyard and fountain area is being re-designed into an energy efficient, four-season area for students, faculty, and visitors.

Working in tandem, these two Terex TA6s Site Dumpers move aggregate material for site prep work in the Campus Center fountain courtyard area.

They are available with either electric (SP-2200) or hydraulic (SP-2200-H) drives to further meet individual needs.

A mounting kit comes standard with the spreaders, allowing them to fit on the existing attachment points found on a wide variety of dump bodies (some fabrication required). To allow maximum control of the application, the units include variablespeed controllers, which independently adjust the auger and spinner speeds. Because their design contains no pulleys, sprockets, chains or belts, the spreaders require little maintenance. To further simplify servicing needs, each unit contains a clean out tray, which can be lowered to easily clear material from the hopper after use. A work light also comes standard with the SP-2200 and SP-2200-H. Both models are covered by a two year warranty. In addition to its under tailgate spreaders, SnowEx offers both electric and hydraulic replaceable tailgate spreaders for dump bodies, as well as a full line of oth-
