Workplace Safety Day heightens awareness .by Tom DiGangi Jr., executive director of Associated General Contractors of

New Jersey It’s a pretty unbelievable statistic, but

each year, nearly one out of every 10 construction workers on our state’s highway construction projects are injured on the job. According U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 87,400 worker injuries at job sites — including 600 on highway, street and bridge construction projects — in New Jersey in 2009 (the most recent numbers that have been released).

On August 25 of this year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Census of Fatal Oc-

cupational Injuries (CFOI) program announced that there were 91 total fatalities in private sector, state and local government road work throughout the nation. Seventy one percent of the fatalities in 2010 were a result of transportation accidents, which typically involve construction workers killed in motor vehicle accidents on the job site, workers in the work zone struck by traffic, work-

Testing, testing…

Volvo Construction Equipment’s North American headquarters asked one of the busiest work sites in the United States to create a long, rough ride to test the Volvo A40E FS in the most difficult operating conditions. “Volvo was on site for four days and we built a really rough two mile course to test the Volvo A40E FS,” said David Strayer, assistant operations manager at Lycoming County Landfill, about nine miles south of Williamsport, PA. “The tests went so well, we bought one.”

“We didn’t want to disrupt our normal operations so we built the course and used that as our main haul for the demo days. We built rumble strips, speed bumps and corners that were off level on the backside of our borrow area where we strip dirt out to cover the landfill,” Strayer said.

Located on Route 15 near the Allenwood Federal Prison Complex, the 500 acre landfill officially opened in 1978. It accepts about 1,100 tons of municipal solid waste per day, from six neighboring counties. It may be a landfill, but it’s one of the most scenic. It is surrounded by wooded wilderness and is populated by families of deer, wild turkeys and eagles. Even the landfill’s roads are something to see.

Asked about how the test began, Product Manager John Waldron of Volvo in Asheville, NC, chuckled, saying that all of Lycoming’s landfill roads “were too nice” so the test course needed to be created to put the new full suspension through the “really tough stuff.”

Lycoming from 4 “We test, and test and test new products all across the country,” Waldron explained. “We’ve been working with Lycoming for over 10 years and they agreed to create the hauler course for us.”

Lycoming has purchased several Volvos over the past few years and currently has a Volvo EC360B Excavator, four articulated haulers and four Volvo E series loaders: Volvo L330, Volvo L220, Volvo L90 and Volvo L70. Three articulated haulers became four just one year ago.

When Team Volvo visited, David Strayer said that he, the other Lycoming operators, John Waldron and Volvo product specialist Blaine Pressley took turns in teams of two riding along the new course in the new Volvo A40E FS, a Volvo A40D articulated hauler, and an articulated hauler from a competitor of Volvo.

Which Volvo A40E FS features became the main topics of conversation?

“Safety, comfort and productivity,” Strayer said.

“The cycle times were much better with the Volvo A40E FS and it handled much better.”

The manufactured rumble strips, corners and bumps reinforced the benefits of Volvo to the Lycoming team, which faces some of these problems in the working sections of the landfill and in crossing Route 15 to get to the “borrow area.” At Lycoming, where the machines are regularly worked up to 10 hours a day every week, rains turn the landfill to mud and summer can transform the roadways into a dust storm (battled by the landfill’s water trucks).

“One of our main requirements for a machine and for production is safety,” Strayer stated. “We need good visibility and braking power because we do a lot of backing down over slopes to dump soil. When you have a machine with 30 to 40 tons in the payload, you want to be able to stop. Safety is our first and foremost concern.”

Smooth Operator With Volvo articulated haulers, safety goes hand in hand with comfort. “You also want a machine that is going to treat your operator properly,” Strayer said.

“This is up there high on my scale because when you’ve got a happy operator, productivity is up.”

The new Volvo A40E FS provides both safety and comfort, surpassing the competition, said Dave Bonus, Lycoming’s operations manager. “The test proved that the Volvo A40E FS truck is the Cadillac of haul trucks with its operator comfort and very smooth ride,” Bonus said. “Hands down, the Volvo haul trucks far exceed in comfort compared to the competition. There’s also a definite increase in productivity.”

Strayer continued: “Our operators like the braking ability, and the mirror configuration provides excellent visibility. And the noise level is much better in the Volvo.”

How We Roll “We run an organized facility, meet every morning and hand out the assignments. It’s first come, first serve with the machines and the guys who want to use the Volvos are out the door first. There’s a difference in enthusiasm. Any time you have a machine with less bouncing, easier serviceability, and less time in the shop, it affects the overall profit line.”

Strayer explained that, in addition to the new full suspension, Volvo’s haulers are also beating the competition with easier service checks and fills. “The new Volvo trucks do it all for you electronically. I’ll tell you, it’s really nice. Volvo has had a decade of great advances.”

ers struck by moving equipment in the work zone and fatal injuries to operators or riders due to roll overs of construction equipment.

The good news is that the number of fatalities in construction projects throughout the nation has actually decreased 19.5 percent since 2009 and year over year since 2007. Much work is still needed, however, to protect our state and nation’s construction workers.

At Associated General Contractors of New Jersey (AGC of NJ), we’re working diligently with our member companies and labor partners to ensure workers on their job sites have the proper safety training to help reduce the possibility that they will be injured on the job.

These safety training programs have been effective in helping to educate thousands of workers per year in ways they can stay safe on the job site.

Still, many of these injuries and fatalities occur on our state’s job sites because of outside forces: drivers on our state’s roadways who aren’t paying full attention to driving.

We believe that work zone related deaths and worker injuries on construction sites can be drastically reduced if motorists stay alert when they are driving through work zones. It is so important for motorists to slow down and heighten their awareness in construction work zones, as they are places where construction workers are constructing safer roads for New Jersey motorists. Motorists need to focus sole-

The cost of work site injuries is staggering. For example, according to OSHA, (www.osha.gov/dcsp/smallbusiness/saf etypays/estimator.html) if one worker on a job site suffers a back injury, that injury will result in close to $50,000 in direct and indirect costs. A contractor would need more than $1 million in new business to recoup the costs.

Despite the best efforts of our State’s No Phone Zone law to reduce driving distractions, the latest bells and whistles of mobile devices still distract drivers.

On October 5, AGC of NJ, our member companies and labor partners will focus special attention on safety on our

state’s construction work sites. We devote this day to generate public awareness for the dangers that exist in highway work zones for construction workers, motorists and on other job sites for all construction workers.

It’s just one day dedicated to public awareness for safe driving. But, we need you, the driver, to be publicly aware of it every day.

New recycling solution introduced to treat Marcellus Shale flowback frac water ALBUQUERQUE, NM — A new joint partnership provides a solution to the environmental issues surrounding the treatment of mineral laden brackish water from Marcellus Shale drilling, a problem that has threatened to severely limit natural gas drilling in several northeastern states.

The partnership recently announced is between Casella Waste Systems, Inc. based in Rutland, VT and Altela, Inc., a privately held water desalination company in Albuquerque, NM. Together, these two companies have partnered to solve the environmental issue of brackish, salty water produced from drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale basin that until recently was often discharged into area rivers, with little or no treatment for hard to remove salt contaminants.

The newly formed joint partnership, “Casella-Altela Regional Environmental Services, LLC,” or “CARES,” will recycle brackish oilfield and natural gas wastewater into clean distilled water for future use by the industry. The cleaned water is the same quality as rainwater and can be recycled and reused by the oil and gas industry.

As part of the joint partnership, Altela will provide the technology to

clean the brackish water to a quality higher than state and federal standards, while Casella will provide the working infrastructure and operational facilities for the treatment facility.

The first water treatment facility will be located at the Casella owned landfill located in McKean County, PA. The placement of the treatment facility at the McKean landfill provides an excellent platform to provide a full suite of resource solutions to the drilling companies, including storage for brackish and clean water. The water treatment facility will be powered by clean energy generated by methane gas

captured from the landfill.

“This is a perfect environmental fit — making pure distilled water from brackish Marcellus oilfield water — at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the oil and gas industry in treating waste water,” said Ned Godshall, Altela’s chief executive officer. “The unique AltelaRain® process cleans the frac water using primarily just the methane gas already coming off the landfill — not electricity.”

Altela announced that this is the first of many facilities planned throughout the Northeast to combine the synergies of landfill waste energy with Altela’s unique reclamation of pure water from frac flowback water using low grade heat — not expensive electricity. Peterbilt unveils new enhancements for medium duty models 210 and 220 DENTON, TEXAS — Peterbilt Motors Company unveiled new design enhancements for the medium duty Models 210 and 220 cabovers in the Class 6 and Class 7 markets.

Offering optimal maneuverability, high volume payload capacity and enhanced visibility, the cabover vehicles are available in several wheelbases to accommodate a variety of application requirements including pickup and delivery, wrecker and sweeper.

“Maneuverability is a key attribute to maintain.The Model 210 and 220 offer that and driver comfort, entry safety features, serviceability and vigorous power all in a compact package. And with its low chassis weight, it’s perfect for high volume payloads,” said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt general manager and PACCAR vice president.

“From Class 5 to Class 8, Peterbilt has a complete lineup of conventional and cabover trucks that offer versatility that will meet any business requirements or application needs.”

The new 2012 designs have paired a lightweight chassis and frame rail with a strategically positioned electrical system to optimize body installa-

tion and increase payload capacity. The Models 210 and 220 utilize Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology and are 2010 emissions compliant. In addition, the new designs are available with an Allison 2100 Series automatic transmission which helps provide a smooth, comfortable ride.

Designed for optimal productivity, the Peterbilt 210 is available as a Class 6 straight truck with GVW rated at 26,000-pounds. It features a tight turning radius for ultimate maneuverability in difficult, confined spaces, and a wrap around windshield, extra large side windows and heated mirrors for exceptional visibility. Standard with an automatic transmission and air suspension, the model 210 is recommended for bodies between 18 to 26-feet in length and can be configured for a non-CDL operation. In addition, the wrap around dash highlights the spacious interior with its capacity to seat three people and provides ample storage with overhead compartments running the width of the cabin.

A Class 7 vehicle, the Model 220 is tailor made to deliver a compact package of maneuverabil-

ity, visibility and serviceability. In addition to the tight turning radius and wrap around windshield, the Model 220 provides a low chassis weight, perfect for high volume payloads. The front panel opens for quick access to the air filter, coolant, washer fluid, power steering fluid, refrigerant, engine oil and ergonomically positioned doors open a wide 90 degrees. The Model 220 is recommended for bodies between 20 and 26-feet in length.

Both vehicles are powered by the reliable, lightweight PACCAR PX-6 with horsepower ratings up to 250 and torque ratings up to 660-pounds-foot. Ideal for medium duty truck owners, the fuel efficient PX-6 provides an inline six cylinder devise with four valves per cylinder, a high pressure common rail fuel system and features the best power to weight ratio available in its class.

“To expand versatility in Peterbilt’s medium duty line, and to capitalize on market growth, our team of engineers has developed new designs for the Model 210 and 220 to enhance driver productivity,” said Landon Sproull, Peterbilt chief engineer.

Granite sleeper is ideal for customers in any market working to meet the federal hours of service requirements.”

Further enhancements to the Mack Granite series include a new headliner console, optional one piece windshield, and updated Champion Level trim package with button tuck vinyl and ultraleather seats that delivers the comfort and styling drivers desire at no extra charge over its predecessor.
