MIZA CMR01 Building | waiwai design

Abu Dhabi, UAE | Commercial Office | 902 sqm

Schematic Design - Design Development - Permit Drawings - Construction Drawings - Coordination

Description:

Mina Zayed (MIZA) was an essential part of the UAE’s economic development and its emergence as an open, trading nation. The fish and flower markets here became an important part of the cultural memory of many Abu Dhabi residents.

This is why the design proposal offers a scheme which is singularly Abu Dhabi, unique to Al Mina, yet will shape its future. The metaphor of the port —open, cosmopolitan, trading —is an apt one for a creative district. It will support emerging creatives, an emerging creative economy and a regional identity, which is outward-looking and embracing of new ideas and ways of working, living and creating.

The warehouse is re-worked and re-thought to create interesting and dynamic combinations of spaces and uses.

Responsibilities:

• Making and managing digital models (BIM/Revit/Sketchup). Ensuring consultants have the most up to date model.

• Assisting project lead in delivering milestones.

• Preparing presentation drawings throughout numerous design iterations.

• Coordinating with different local manufacturers in order to maintain the agreed look and feel of the design.

Wetland Sabkha Experiments| waiwai design

Dubai, UAE

Description:

The industrial desalination processes in the UAE produce substantial amounts of wastewater brine, which can be repurposed as a structural material, similar to the historical use of sabkhas. This prototype, named Wetland, was showcased at the UAE Pavilion during the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021, where it received the prestigious Golden Lion award. In response to this pressing need, waiwai has focused on the sabkhas of the UAE—salt flats within a wetland ecosystem that cover 5% of the nation’s land. The experiments address the potential for industrial waste to offer solutions for designing and building that also reintroduce local culture and identity into architectural production.

Responsibilities:

• Making variations of salt and clay samples.

• Documenting and listing ingredients for the experiments.

• Preparing the sabkha modeling manual and visual diagrams.
