Valerie Doran Bashaw Artist’s Statement I like to make order/organize accidental marks, whether working with dyed fabrics or mixed media. It’s control versus spontaneity, yin and yang. I walk somewhere in the middle. I think of how an improvisational jazz musician “riffs” off other players, I do the same, trusting my intuition to guide me. How can I add to, remove this, embellish, layer, stitch, bead, to complete the composition? You just know when to stop, at least most of the time, to not over do. My newer work is dyed or printed in some manner, sometimes using vintage fabrics, adding metallic thread hand stitching. The contrast is wonderful, delicate, ethereal. These works embrace my aesthetic of quiet, meditative work, meant to encourage and remind the viewer to sit and relax, unwind and retreat from the hectic world, to come to center again. I feel that our nervous systems are so over-stimulated by the constant onslaught of computers, television, video, driving and more. My work is collected by local hospitals and businesses and is in private homes. All work has been sprayed with Scotch guard fabric protector. Artist’s Bio Valerie Doran Bashaw of south Kansas City, is a fiber/mixed media professional artist and fine arts educator. Many years have been spent exploring and teaching resist-dyeing methods such as shibori, tie dye, batik, Japanese paste resist and more. She creates wall pieces of these fabrics, which are sewn/pieced together, stretched over a deep frame. Themes are landscapes, mandalas, circles, cycles, and more. Valerie continues to teach at the college level and at the Ghost Ranch Conference and Education Center in New Mexico. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from the Kansas City Art Institute and a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan, both in Fine Arts/Fiber. She works with students of all ages and abilities. She continues to be active in the local and regional art scene including serving as the former Vice President of the Best of Missouri Hands organization. Valerie is a member of the Kansas City Artists Coalition, Missouri Fiber Artists and American Craft Council. She serves on the Board of Directors for Sharing a Vision for Generations, raising money to award scholarships to Lakota Sioux women (who live on Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota) so that they can study Lakota culture and pursue their college education. .Contact details:

Jackie Keirnan-Hale Statement I have found my artistic voice with the handwork and feel of fiber and embroidery. My work celebrates the endless possibilities of beauty around all of us. I communicate the wonder of the everyday moment so that the viewer can see that beauty and calmness of a single moment in nature. I create art quilts by collaging various fabrics that are sewn, fused or glued to a base fabric or stretched canvas. I use the basic premise of painting, foreground, middle and background. Using colored pencil and fabric markers I further enhance the image. I use layers of embroidery using cotton, mylar, silk and rayon, silk and organza ribbon, netting, beads or sequins to add texture. I create a sense of movement and pattern by choosing vibrant colors and division of space created by the different materials. Biography Jackie Keirnan Hale uses a collage of fabric, ribbon, hand embroidery and bead work to create impressionistic landscapes and seascapes. Jackie has exhibited at Tim Murphy Gallery, Merriam, Ks (2018) R.G. Endres Gallery, Prairie Village, Ks (2017), Trees of Life, Costa Mesa, Ca (2016), Art at the Center, Overland Park, Ks (2016), Women of the Arts, Columbia, Mo (2017,2015,2013), Speaking of Fibers, St.Louis, Mo (2017, 2015, 2013). Jackie has several commissioned pieces in private collections. Jackie is a member of the Missouri Fiber Artists, Studio Art Quilt Association, and is currently serving as President of the Nitetime Needlers Quilt Guild, Gladstone, Mo. Betsy Knabe Roe The Core Remains Series

Statement The human world has long used the earth with disregard to the consequences of undermining the healthy and sustainable ecosystems that support all life. The Core Remain Series represent the fragmented natural world as a measure of this disorder of social attitudes toward that which is non-human. The textural paper of the cast sculptures seems to have deteriorated leaving only the inner core, a record of time as decay. The microbial details point toward the possibility of reviving a reverence of the human interconnection with the natural world.

Bio As a Fiber Sculptor, I use different types of fiber materials such as fabric and hand-made paper from a variety of plants. I utilize many fiber techniques like felting, dyeing and casting to create sculptures, wearable art and installations. I received my MFA from the University of Missouri and I have taught art in colleges throughout the Midwest. Inspiration for my art comes from my love of the natural world as well ecological concerns.

Jan Rowan Miller

Artist Statement This winter was brutal; I needed color. So in “Escaping Winter”, snowflakes became confetti; the cold gray of winter became warm and sunny. I used an interfacing silkscreen with thickened dyes on cotton for the multi colored background. With scraps and a lighthearted hand and machine thread quilted details, I made my escape. “Come Hither” is a fantastical scene using a table hand dyed cotton background with added hand painted collage fabrics. I don’t really have a usual way of working. Most pieces come from my printmaking and quilting background. I have a returning love of the monoprint that is starting to emerge in my current work along with my old friend hand stitching.

Biography Jan Rowan Miller of Overland Park, Kansas, is an artist who primarily works in cloth and mixed media. She holds a BA in Fine Art from University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kansas. She is a graduate of 2014 Art Cloth Mastery Program with Jane Dunnewold. The Art Cloth Mastery Program required five weeklong sessions over 3 years, in the San Antonio studio along with demanding interim assignments. Jan has exhibited her work in Missouri Fiber Artists Pairings traveling exhibit (2015-2016), and VisionMakers 2016 juried exhibit, She exhibited work at the Houston International Quilt Festival (November 2016) as part of the group exhibit, TEN VOICES FROM ONE: Work by the Art Cloth Mastery Program 2014. She had three pieces juried into Speaking of Fibers 2017 where she was awarded the Most Creative Use of Fiber Award. She also was part of the 2018 Kansas City Fiber Artist exhibits at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center and Tim Murphy Gallery. Jan is a member of the Surface Design Association, Missouri Fiber Artist (MOFA), and the Kansas City Weavers and Fiber Guilds.

Susan Ferguson

Artist’s Statement Weaving and the fiber arts have shown me a positive, meditative path to self-discovery and creativity. I work at a rigid heddle loom, doing plain weave with my fingers. I use a mixture of traditional and non-traditional materials to create highly textured pieces that express my views mostly about two matters: environmental issues and emotional health. My wall hangings are often messy and disheveled, reflecting the way I navigate in the world. These wall hangings include deconstructed non-traditional materials, the pieces of which have then been woven. “Forest” is made with traditional yarns combined with non-traditional materials including vinyl, Mylar, fox fur, feathers, and slabs of tree bark, all of which have been woven into a linen warp. “Business” is made of deconstructed silk neckties woven into a linen/cotton warp. These items were created on a rigid heddle loom funded in part by a 2018 Inspiration Grant from the ARTS KC Regional Arts Council.

Biography Susan Ferguson holds two academic degrees in English. She worked for more than forty years in agriculture, journalism, marketing and teaching. In southern Arizona, during a hiatus from traditional employment, Susan discovered a passion for weaving and the fiber arts. She lives now in Independence, MO, where her exploration and experimentation with weaving, tapestry, fiber art and mixed media pleasantly consume much of her time. Susan is a member of the Weavers Guild of Greater Kansas City, Fiber Guild of Greater Kansas City, and Missouri Fiber Artists. Susan is a 2018 ARTS KC Regional Arts Council Inspiration Grant recipient.

Annie Webster

Artist’s Statement I can turn a piece of string into fabric. It is my super power. I crochet and embroider because I simply have to. If I didn’t have fiber to work with I would, to quote Carl Carlson, “completely go psycho on all you guys all the time.” Playing with yarn and string calms me, and when I am calm I can explore colors, textures, and shapes. “Play” is really what ties all of my work together, be it a small cowl or a large wall hanging. I just need to play with yarn. Biography Annie Webster is a fiber artist in Kansas City, Missouri. She learned to sew and embroider from her mom and grandma, studied graphic design at Penn Valley Community College, and learned to crochet on her own (with a little help from the internet). After more than a decade of designing marketing materials for a mailing list company, Annie left her job to concentrate on fiber art full-time. She lives in Kansas City’s northland with her husband, Mike, and a large yarn stash. Becky Stevens Statement My art process is a reflection of my environment and the rhythmic, meditative aspects of my everyday life. I enjoy the meditative process it creates within me. I use mark making with thread and stitch to create this recurrent theme. Layers of fabric, paper, and thread combine to symbolize the physical layers, the stratification, of the earth and time, and the depth of our lives. I like to use a visual rhythm, from my repeating stitches to repeating designs to invite the viewer in, knowing that these repeating lines and design elements allow a sense of calmness, a sense of comfort, and a sense of oneness with something that is bigger than the viewer.

Biography BECKY STEVENS, received her BFA (1986) in Fine Art from Northwest Missouri State University and is a studio artist. After graduating she taught as a substitute teacher for the Belton and Blue Springs school district. She spent several summers working for Access Arts, leading a team of artists, using art to help blind children interpret their environment. Her community arts activism includes a seat on the board of the Kansas City Weavers Guild since 2006, a board member of Missouri Fiber Artists (MoFA) since 2013, a founding member of the Feltmakers Federation (regional group of felt artists) and the founder of Surface Design Master Classes for the Kansas City Weavers Guild. She is a member of Surface Design Association, Kansas City Artist Coalition, and the St Louis Artist Guild. Becky has been in numerous juried shows, receiving awards for her work and she has done numerous commissions. She has also lectured on natural dyes and textile practices. She has always worked to combine modern art thinking with centuries old textile techniques. Her current work has indigo painted on hemp cloth with layers of hand stitching. The painting and stitching is done in loose, gestural strokes, suggesting images of stories. Becky is the Vice President of Missouri Fiber Artists, MOFA.

Judy Santner

Artist Statement Since the realization of global warming I have noticed Kansas weather has seemed more severe. I wanted to capture the very distinct four seasons of Kansas using felting and eco-dyeing as my medium. I use this wet felted wool and silk banner as a pallet combined with eco dyeing. The two techniques randomly emerge and capture nature’s design and it’s changing landscape.

Bio Judy Santner is a full-time fiber artist maintaining a studio in Overland Park, Ks. Where she lives with her husband. Largely she is a self-taught weaver and felter, she has traveled across the country to study with numerous national and international fiber teachers. Recently, she studied eco dyeing (botanical printing) with Olga Kazanskaya. Santner is a member of Missouri Fiber Artist, KC weavers Guild and a founding member of Feltmakers Federation.

Statement I am a methodical and results oriented person, but also one who loves color, texture, and design. Weaving satisfies both. The warping and planning is methodical and mathematical. The weaving process is meditative and spontaneous. I lay out my colorway on my work table using hundreds of pieces of yarn in the form of cones, skeins, and scraps, and bits of fabric. I adjust until it feels good. Then I start weaving. When I sit at my loom and weave, I don't think too much about the end result. It's all about the colors and textures unfolding in my hands. I have recently begun a series of mixed media paintings exploring the interactions between the shapes and colors of my textiles, while attempting to bring the illusion of the depth and texture of fiber to a flat surface.

Mary Hamam Elmusa Statement A combination of manipulated digital photography, which is printed onto linen or cotton fabric is combined with stitching or quilting in my textile based artworks. It’s inspiring for me to use contemporary digital techniques, combined with stitching or quilting, which gives contemporary acknowledgement to the long-practiced, grass roots, American women’s craft form of expression and design.

Biography Mary Elmusa is an artist and educator from Leawood, Kansas. Mary’s work is created from textiles to which she has applied varied surface design treatments. She uses dyeing, painting, printing (manual & digital), wax and other media to create compelling surfaces. Sewing is a crucial part of the work, as the cloth is often pieced, quilted, sewn, and stitched. Pieces are framed or hung as wall pieces. A fascination with pattern in various forms and intuitive expression of color are prominent in her highly textural works. Her work has been shown in many juried exhibitions nationally, and also in regional and local exhibitions. In 2011 she was awarded a Surface Design Association Scholar award; she is a past recipient of the state of Kansas Art Commission Fellowship Award in Craft media and was also a scholarship recipient to study shibori dyeing at the Arrowmont School of Craft in Tennessee. Mary is also an experienced instructor who takes delight in teaching art to people of all ages. Mary is the former regional representative for the Surface Design Association, SDA.

Media: Digitally manipulated photography, pigment printing on cotton; machine quilting.

Linda Jurkiewicz

Artist Statement “The Responders” was inspired by Egyptian Ushebtis (or Shabtis), which were funerary servant figures representing the deceased and usually mummiform in shape. The hieroglyphs on the figures are from the Book of the Dead and include, “I shall do it, here I am.” As an agricultural community, ancient Egyptians believed that in the afterlife a person would be expected to carry out the same daily work they did in life, so the Ushebtis were buried alongside to fulfill that need. Overlaying that idea with the 20th century woman/wife figure, I am grateful that this is not part of my culture’s belief system – performing all of those tasks day in and day out during just one lifetime is definitely enough! – and yet I believe that we are still in a culture in which women are primarily considered caretakers. Do we continue to stand there, ready to serve again? Hopefully, as women, we are beginning to realize that our place in this world includes serving ourselves as well as others. The piece was constructed entirely through the use of repurposed and recycled fabric, cardboard and small found items.

Biography Linda Jurkiewicz lives in Kansas City and began working with textiles in 2005. Her use of text, rhythm, and repetition all come into play in her fiber work as she delves into life experiences that many humans encounter. Her upbringing in a first generation Ukrainian-Croatian family created in her a “make-do” attitude that fits nicely with the use of repurposed fiber, dish towels, sheets and clothing. Jurkiewicz’s work has been juried into numerous exhibitions locally and nationally, including Paying tribute to the Muse at the Vanessa Lacy Gallery, KCMO (2019), Raw – The Exhibition at Indiana University (2018), Sacred Threads in Herndon, VA (2017 and 2019), The Blue Show at the Core New Art Space (2017) and The Engaged Object at the Foothills Art Center (2016), both in Denver, Colorado, and Welcome to My World: Mental Health Awareness through Art at the MIRI Gallery (2016). She was chosen for the Juror’s Choice Award in The 2016 Human Experience vs. the Abstracts at Overland Park Art at the Center. Jurkiewicz is a member of the Missouri Fiber Artists organization.
