FEES AND FUNDING PROSPECTUS 2020

24

TUITION FEES Don’t worry, funding is on hand to help. Tuition fee loans are available to cover course costs regardless of household income. These are paid to us by the Student Loans Company. You only pay back according to how much you earn over £25,000.

Bursaries are means-tested and will depend on your performance. You don’t need to apply separately for these as they will be administered by University Centre Leeds automatically.

Ineligible or self-funding students will need to pay an initial payment of 25% at enrolment. This is followed by six consecutive monthly direct debit payments to cover the remaining tuition fee for that academic year. Part-time students are eligible for loans if they are completing at least 25% of the equivalent full-time course load each year.

WORKING OUT YOUR BUDGET Using the calculator at gov.uk/student-financecalculator will give you an estimate of how much student finance you may be entitled to before you apply. A more detailed calculator is available at studentcalculator.org.uk.

Please visit our website for details of fees for individual courses.

REPAYING STUDENT LOANS You will only start repaying your loans for fees and living costs from the financial year after you graduate when your income is above £25,000 If your income falls below this amount, your repayments will stop.

Changes to student finance regulations are published regularly. Potential government policy changes may impact on funding. More information can be found at gov.uk/studentfinance or studentfinanceengland.co.uk.

The repayment rate is 9% of your income above £25,000, so the amount you repay will depend on what you earn, not how much you borrow. The loan will be written off after 30 years if you have not repaid the full amount. A repayments calculator is available at gov.uk/student-finance/repayments

Students can apply for loans to help with living costs. The maximum amount varies each year and the amount you can receive will depend on household income. Visit gov. uk/student-finance for more information. Additional non-repayable support such as Parents’ Learning Allowance, childcare funding, and the Disabled Students’ Allowance can pay for any extra study costs that may be incurred due to children or a disability. We also have a generous bursary scheme available to full-time students.

Support can range from one-to-one sessions, adapted materials, learning support workers, assistive technology, and mobility assistance.

CAREERS SUPPORT We provide careers advice and help with progression. We can help with CVs, applications, interviews, placements, internships, postgraduate study, and general guidance. Your course tutors will also assist with your study and progress. DISABLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCES (DSAS) If needed, the dedicated support staff will help you apply for DSAs. They are paid on top of other finance and help cover costs you incurred due to your disability. They don’t have to be repaid and the amount given is based on your individual needs.

CHILDCARE You can get childcare advice and funding while studying. For information on availability of external childcare visit familyinformationleeds. co.uk. Full-time students can apply for a childcare grant. This helps with childcare costs and is dependent on household income. This grant is in addition to student finance and doesn’t need to be repaid. Please visit gov. uk/childcare-grant for more information.

DSAs can help with the costs of specialist equipment, assistive technology, non-medical helpers, extra travel allowance, and other disability-related costs. If it is determined through the assessment process that you need a specific computer, you may need to pay the first £200. Please ask the HE Learning Support Officer for further information.

ST DENT ASE STUDY MILDRED KIDO BUSINESS, ENTERPRISE AND MANAGEMENT

Though many struggle with the work/life balance, University Centre Leeds student and super-mum Mildred Kido is well on her way to

building an empire as she juggles school, motherhood, and business. While studying her degree, Mildred set up MCK Recruitment, a company

that specialises in staffing the ‘global village’ by bringing job seekers and client companies together. MCK recruits nationally and internationally bringing candidates from abroad to successful UK companies. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

“I started MCK because I saw a gap in the sector. I figured that

borders should not limit a person from becoming what they want to

become. I believe that anybody can live or work wherever they want to, and I want to create a niche market that caters to this facility.

I mainly help people who live in countries with high unemployment statistics - many of whom are graduates - qualified and highly skilled individuals who cannot find a job in their profession.”

HOW DID YOUR PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE FEED INTO YOUR BUSINESS? “Working as an au pair in Germany and in various roles, helped me

gain a lot of experience in customer service. As a result, I now offer motivational training for customer service teams because nobody ever thinks about the individuals behind the phone or counter.” WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO STUDY?

“I had the idea, which was essentially a ‘prestart phase’. However, I knew I could not run a business without the fundamentals. This course is giving me the theoretical knowledge, which in many ways is feeding back into my business.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER ENTREPRENEURS, ESPECIALLY RECRUITERS?

“Recruitment is highly competitive and you need to find your

niche. You need to stand out from other recruiters and find out what your USP is to survive. A business is like a baby, it needs

to crawl, walk, then run. If you really want to be a recruiter, and have a customer service or sales background, you can do it.”

Mildred’s plans are to continue with her education, following her Business,

Enterprise and Management Degree she plans on progressing to a master’s.

ST DENT ASE STUDY CAT PINDER APPLIED COMPUTING

Applied Computing student, Cat Pinder, completed her foundation degree while working at multinational defence security and aerospace company, BAE. She attended our Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) event

as a role model to encourage young females to consider careers in these sectors. We caught up with her to find out more.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE APPLIED COMPUTING?

I’ve always had an interest in ICT and I believed this course would

allow me to improve my skills further. It has already equipped me with vast programming knowledge which I can use in my current role. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR JOB AT BAE?

I applied for the apprenticeship scheme at BAE and was

successful. The help I also got from my tutors was invaluable. WHAT DOES YOUR CURRENT ROLE ENTAIL?

I am currently working in back-end development creating an

Extract Transform Load (ETL) flow. I enjoy working closely with experienced members of the team and gaining knowledge on a daily basis that puts classroom theory into practice. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PART OF AN INDUSTRY THAT IS PREDOMINANTLY MALE DOMINATED?

It is a great opportunity to prove that women can do the same

if not better than men. I would also encourage young girls who enjoy STEM subjects to experience working in these sectors

as it’s very rewarding. The most important thing is to try your hardest and push yourself to achieve the best you can.

ST DENT ASE STUDY HELENA SHEPHERDSON ART ENTERPRISE

Prior to studying at University Centre Leeds, Helena completed a BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design achieving a triple distinction.

Since then, she has gone from strength to strength progressing on

to the Art Enterprise Foundation Degree, then the Art Enterprise BA (Hons) Top-up award. She then moved on to a PGCE with us. WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT STUDYING AT UNIVERSITY CENTRE LEEDS?

I loved the atmosphere. I found it easier to study and received a lot of

support from my tutors. There was a balance between academic and social activity and this helped me to grow as a person as well as a student.

WHAT WORK EXPERIENCE DID YOU COMPLETE WHILE AT COLLEGE AND WHAT DID YOU GAIN FROM THESE EXPERIENCES?

I produced work for the Deer Shed Festival. We had to work towards

a live brief and it was a great experience working within the creative industry. I had the opportunity to work with toddlers right through

to the elderly, running art workshops. I also had a chance to curate

exhibitions within my local community. These opportunities showed me the different routes there are within the art industry. WHERE ARE YOU WORKING NOW?

I am studying my PGCE at University Centre Leeds and I am doing my placement at Leeds City College.

HOW DO YOU APPLY THE SKILLS YOU LEARNT ON THE COURSE IN YOUR JOB ROLE?

The knowledge I have acquired in the art industry is

vital in my job role, as I’m not only teaching students art but teaching them employability skills as well.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS UNSURE ABOUT WHAT DEGREE TO CHOOSE/ WHETHER A DEGREE IS FOR THEM?

I would advise them to make an appointment and come down to

University Centre Leeds and speak to the students as their knowledge and experiences are invaluable. They will get a better sense of what courses are on offer and if a course is right for them.
