Our inaugural group-wide Teaching and Learning Conference is an opportunity for colleagues from across all member organisations and sectors to come together with a common purpose around our passion for high quality teaching and learning, which increases the aspirations and opportunities of our students.

We will be welcoming attendees from Leeds City College, University Centre Leeds, Leeds Sixth Form, Keighley College, Leeds College of Music, White Rose Academies and Harrogate College (FE, secondary & HE sectors), with a capacity of 1168 on the day.

Having trained as a physics teacher, Tom Sherrington has been a teacher and school leader for over 30 years, working in a wide range of school contexts around the UK and in Jakarta, Indonesia.

On a cold and misty morning in October 1975, Richard McCann woke to discover his mother was missing.

He was just five years old. She was the first victim of the notorious Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.

Despite other tragic losses, and a period of dabbling with drugs and prison, Richard decided to turn his life around.

Bill Jones (Deputy CEO Leeds City College), Andrew Whitaker (Executive Principal White Rose Academies Trust) and Jeanne Rogers (Group Director Quality, Teaching & Learning).

He spent 11 years as a headteacher and is now an education consultant supporting schools and colleges with teacher development, school improvement, assessment and curriculum design. He is a prolific blogger, sharing ideas via his popular website teacherhead.com and strong Twitter following @teacherhead.

He is a regular speaker at education conferences for teachers and school leaders. Tom is also a trustee of the National Baccalaureate Trust.

Author of The Learning Rainforest: Great teaching in real classrooms / Rosenshine’s Principles in Action / Teach Now! Science. The Joy of Teaching Tom Sherrington Science.

He grew to become a motivational speaker and loving family man, with a film of his life in development.

Today, Richard has delivered over 2500 presentations around the world, inspiring audiences with his story of overcoming adversity, and sharing his powerful iCan approach.

In 2009 he founded the iCanSpeak Academy, training individuals and teams to enhance their presentation skills and communicate their message authentically and with confidence so they achieve more effective results.

Inclusion is not about special needs. It’s about everyone.

Technology can and does enable inclusion for all, and in this session we’ll show you how. We’ll be showing three tools from Texthelp that together enable students to support their individual needs, challenges and strengths. Working across literacy, language, maths and science we’ll explore how these three tools can encourage our learners to take charge, be reflective and manage their own learning journey.

All by scaffolding the diversity of ways our students learn with technology. Whether it’s Google Docs, PDF or the web, reading, writing, maths. study or exams, there’s something here for every teacher and student for their entire learning journey. No techno babble, and no sales pitch, just practical help and advice grounded in teaching and learning!

There will be an opportunity to hear what initiatives have been utilised at LWA, what is happening on a national scale and how our mind set around disadvantaged learners can be influenced.

Discussion, reflection and debate about what makes great leadership for those considering their first steps in leadership. This session would be most relevant for those at the start of their leadership journey.

‘Implementing Red Hot Challenge tasks to develop high order thinking, deepen knowledge and broaden skills.’

This session is suitable for teachers in all settings who are interested in developing further challenge in their practice. The session aims to provide strategies which promote differentiation for high ability learners, embedding independent exam skills which will empower learners to become more accomplished in their abilities.

Through the implementation of Red Hot Challenge at Leeds East Academy, this session will demonstrate the impact of stretching learners to step outside of their comfort zone and drive their learning forward with a sense of autonomy and self-assurance.

3. Cooperative Learning: Katie Broadbent LEEDS WEST ACADEMY

Cooperative Learning structures, delivered in a monthly club open to all staff, have allowed Leeds West Academy staff to try out interactive and effective methods to engage students in their learning. In this session, you will learn easy-toimplement structures to trial with students of all ages or even to liven up a team meeting!

The session will briefly introduce memory storage in the adolescent brain, looking at working memory, short term memory and long term memory. A variety of tried and tested, pedagogy based, recall and retrieval methods will also be shared so that teachers have the ability to start trialling memory techniques with their classes straight away.

Methods will include ideas for starters, homework, curriculum design and full blown memory lessons, allowing teachers the freedom to explore this area of research in a way that suits their setting and students.

How might the new Ofsted framework shape our curriculum, our priorities and quality assurance or inspection activity going forward. This session will enable teachers and managers to understand the implications of the three I‘s of the framework on the breadth and scope of curriculum.

Targets ultimately are used to drive behaviours, and there will be an opportunity to look at how and what targets could be used to drive the necessary behaviour and mindset shift for teachers, managers and governors.

Wakelet is a curation tool that allows you to save, organise, tell stories and share content from around the web. Learn how this tool can be used to curate a challenge zone and build resources to extend learning in and out of the classroom.

Wakelet is popular in education but not designed solely for teachers and students. After all, curation is something everyone can benefit from, both personally and professionally. Curation is becoming an increasingly necessary 21st century skill, considering the amount of information we encounter online on a daily basis. Outside of the classroom, people use Wakelet every day to plan trips, learn new skills, curate interests and news stories and much more!

The session would be best suited to teaching and delivery staff who are wanting to develop the use of technology enhanced learning tools in their own planning and delivery.

This session will provide examples of different strategies that can be used to allow all learners, especially less able learners, to access the most difficult content, with a focus on extended writing.

The interactive session will look at how you can foster and introduce values which aim to instil the highest standard of principles and morals within learners which you teach.

This presentation will consider how audienceresponse software (Poll Everywhere) can be used to enable interactive, inclusive, efficient, high-quality, and enduring peer-feedback seminars. While introducing the model in the context of HE music, the presenters consider wider applications that will be of interest to educators from across the arts and humanities in FE and HE.

An essential part of studying music is learning to receive and construct peer feedback. This typically takes place in a seminar setting where a student will present their work to the group, who verbally give feedback. In the context of music composition classes, feedback is usually given after a piece is played. However, this traditional format can be intimidating, time-consuming, tutor-led, and lacking critical depth.

There is no formal dress code for the day, casual wear is appropriate.

Do I need to bring a pen/paper?

No, make sure you sign in and have your ticket scanned by events staff to receive your Luminate goody bag (including a pen and pad inside).

Over 1000 colleagues involved in teaching from across all member organisations of the Luminate Education Group and our specially chosen external speakers.

Where can I park?

The nearest public multistory car park is Woodhouse Lane Car Park, a short walk from the venue. There is no parking available onsite at the University of Leeds.

Where is the nearest public transport?

The venue is approximately 16 minutes walk from Leeds Train Station. The closest bus stops are served by the number 5 bus (stops outside LGI A&E) and the number 1, 1a, 1b, 2, 6, 28, 56 buses (stops along Blenheim Terrace).

What do I do if I have a dietary requirement or allergy?

There is a specific question on the Eventbrite booking form for you to disclose any dietary requirements or allergies. There will be a clearly signposted food station on the day of the event.

Is the venue accessible?

Facilities available at the venue include ramps, lifts, assistive listening system and accessible doors. There is an opportunity to disclose any reasonable adjustments that you may require on the booking form.

Will I need a ticket?
